Abstract
This study examined the role of institutionalization and temperament dimensions on emotion regulation and negative lability in school-aged (6-10 years) children. Participants were 46 institutionalized (22 boys; 24 girls) and 48 noninstitutionalized children (23 boys; 25 girls), matched in age and sex. Emotion regulation and negative lability were assessed with the Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC). The School-Age Temperament Inventory (SATI) was used to measure temperament dimensions. No significant between-group differences emerged in temperament dimensions, emotion regulation and negative lability. After controlling for institutionalization status, results indicated that (a) approach/withdrawal (sociability) and persistence positively predicted emotion regulation, (b) negative reactivity positively predicted negative lability, and (c) persistence negatively predicted negative lability. Institutionalization did not predict emotion regulation or negative lability. The protective role that specific temperament characteristics, such as persistence and approach/withdrawal (sociability), may have for at risk populations (e.g., institutionalized) and typically developing (e.g., noninstitutionalized) children is highlighted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is evidence that children in residential care institutions (RCI) have higher rates of psychological problems, suicide and criminal behaviour. There is only one study in Sri Lanka which has examined the psychological well-being of children in RCIs. Further evidence is needed to formulate policies related to the mental health of institutionalized children in the local context. METHODS A cross sectional descriptive study was carried out in a selected RCI, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. All children (> 4 years) and adolescents who have been in the institution for more than 3 months were included. The caregiver rated version of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to assess the extent of emotional and behavioural problems. RESULTS The sample included 103 children and adolescents, between 5-17years. Majority (51.5%) were females. Mean age at entering care was 6.48 years. The mean score for externalizing problems was 6.72 (SD=3.702) and the mean score for internalizing problems was 4.12 (SD=2.312). Peer problems (23.4 %) and conduct problems (21.5 %) were the commonest problems encountered. Only 40 % of the children having clinically significant levels of problems were in contact with mental health services. CONCLUSION A quarter of the participants had elevated levels of emotional and behavioural problems. Routine screening programmes should be carried out at regular intervals in the RCI's for early detection of children with psychological problems in institutionalized children.

Abstract
In India, children in difficult circumstances, like institutionalized children have higher mental health morbidity and complex psychosocial concerns than the non-institutionalized children. To cater to the complex needs of these children referred by the Juvenile Justice System, a specialized service called 'Swatantra Clinic' was initiated by the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, India. This article thereby aims to describe the psychosocial characteristics of these children, along with the array of specialized interventions provided during the first year of its inception in June 2018. It was found that majority of these children were girls and were from lower socio-economic, urban background, primarily referred for externalizing or internalizing concerns. The majority of them reported experiences of physical and verbal abuse along with family stressors and almost half of them had a diagnosable psychiatric condition. The nature of the psychosocial services rendered at the clinic mostly comprised of brief, individual and family counseling along with liaison work with various governmental agencies for rehabilitation services. These form the key components of a comprehensive, collaborative, time-bound and holistic care model to cater to the distinct psychosocial issues of this vulnerable population of children in low - middle resource settings. Policy implications are discussed.

Abstract
Rolf Hassler is one of the most renowned German specialists in psychiatry, neurology and neuroanatomy. Hassler's career exemplifies medicine as scientific endeavor. Relaying on an expertise in neuroanatomy gained at Oscar and Cecile Vogt's Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, especially regarding the structure of the thalamus, Hassler enabled Freiburg University's neurosurgery clinic the invention of stereotactic "stepped leucotomy" and established thalamotomy internationally in a leading way. While directing the Neuroanatomical/Neurobiological department of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research from 1959 until 1982, Hassler continued to study the effects of stimulation and targeted subcortical electrocoagulation in the cat brain. The Freiburg trained neurosurgeon Gert Dieckmann helped Hassler to apply the newly gained knowledge for the stereotactic therapy of torticollis, tics and obsessions and compulsions. The use however of thalamotomy also as a surgical therapy for aggressiveness in children, mainly during the late 1960s and early 1970s, is starting to provoke public criticism. Contrary however to the accusation of a medicine shaped by Nazi ideology into a "science without humanity", Hasslers career reveals a problematic intrinsic to medicine: the together of "art of healing and science".

Abstract
BACKGROUND Child care institutions (CCIs) in Sri Lanka (SL) provide residence to over 14,000 children. These children have a high risk of developing psychological problems. However, there has been no prior scientific inquiry into mental health issues of institutionalized children in SL. OBJECTIVE To investigate the emotional and behavioral problems of children living in CCIs in Kandy District, and to explore associated factors. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING Ten CCIs in Kandy District were selected and all children aged 6-18 years were recruited. METHODS Child Behavior Checklist (6-18) -Sinhala version (CBCL-S) was filled by the caregivers, and pertinent problem scores were derived. Relevant socio-demographic data were also collected. RESULTS A total of 259 children participated. Of them, 66.8 % were female. The mean age was 13.9 years. The average duration in care was 4.3 years. Clinical levels of behavioral problems were found in 14 % of children, whereas 7% were borderline. Externalizing problems like rule-breaking and aggression were more common (23.3 %) than internalizing problems (6.6 %). Male children exhibited more behavioral problems (p = 0.034). Present age, age on admission, duration in care, history of sexual abuse, institutional transfers and frequency of family contact were not associated with behavioral problems. CONCLUSIONS Institutionalized children showing high levels of externalizing problems may be a reflection of disturbed psychosocial development. However, internalizing problems may not be readily recognized, partly due to the shortage of trained caregivers in SL. Educating caregivers to detect and refer children with behavioral problems to psychiatric services is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health problems are an important issue among institutionalized children. Although positive communication with parents is essential for children's well-being, it has not been sufficiently verified how interactions with parents affect mental health among institutionalized children, who have experienced childhood adversity and likely lack secure attachment formation with their parents. The objectives of this study were to investigate the association between parental visitation and depressive symptoms among institutionalized children in Japan, and to explore whether the established security of attachment interacts with that association. METHODS A cross-sectional data from 399 institutionalized children aged 9 to 18 in Japan was used for the analysis. A mixed effects regression analysis was conducted to investigate the associations. RESULTS Institutionalized children who had parental visitation showed higher depressive symptoms than those who did not. In particular, father's visitations were significantly associated with higher depressive symptoms. There was a significant interaction with score of secure attachment; children with low scores on secure attachment showed higher levels of depression with their father's visitation, whereas children with high scores on secure attachment did not. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggested that parental visitation and the frequency of visitation were not actually associated with better psychological status, but that instead, father's visitations were associated with higher depressive symptoms among institutionalized children. It should be noted that our cross-sectional results cannot infer any causal relationship and do not emphasize that parental visitation should be avoided. However, it may be important to conduct careful assessment before starting parental visitation, especially when children seem to have problems with attachment formation.

Abstract
The present study investigates the relationships among children's history of maltreatment, attachment patterns, and behavior problems in Japanese institutionalized children. Twenty-nine children (12 boys and 17 girls) from three different institutions in the Kinki area (Western part of Japan) participated in this study. Their average age was 6. 41-years (ranging from 4 to 10). Thirteen of the children (44.8%) had history of maltreatment before they were institutionalized. Children's attachment was assessed by the Attachment Doll Play Assessment (George & Solomon, 1990, 1996, 2000). The child's main caregiver answered the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Archenbach, 1991) to identify children's behavior problems. Results indicated a significant relationship between maltreatment history and attachment pattern. The relationship between attachment pattern and behavior problem was also confirmed. Implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

Abstract
Research consistently chronicles a variety of mental health difficulties that plague institutionally reared children, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), even if not all institutionalized children evince such problems. In seeking to extend work in this area, this research on gene × environment (GXE) interplay investigated whether the effect of the quality of institutional care-most notably, caregiver intrusiveness-on ADHD symptoms is moderated by the serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) polymorphism. One hundred and twenty-seven institutionalized preschoolers were evaluated using the Child Behavior Checklist. Caregiver-rated attention problems and hyperactivity were unrelated to both 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and caregiver intrusiveness. A significant GXE effect, independent of age at placement or duration of institutionalization, emerged, however, consistent with the differential-susceptibility hypothesis: s/s homozygotes manifest the most and least ADHD symptoms when they experienced, respectively, more and less intrusive caregiving. These results provide new insight into the reasons why some institutionalized children, but not others, exhibit ADHD symptoms.

Abstract
Toxocariasis is an infection that has worldwide distribution. Toxocara canis is the most relevant agent due to its frequent occurrence in humans. Soil contamination with embryonated eggs is the primary source of T. canis. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of toxocariasis in 10-month to 3 year-old abandoned infants, considered to be at high risk because of their orphanhood status and early age. Blood samples were collected from 120 children institutionalized in an orphanage in the city of La Plata. In this study, we observed 38.33% of seropositive cases for T. canis by ELISA and 45% by Western blot techniques; significant differences among groups A (<1 year), B (1-2 years) and C (>2 years) were also found. In research group A, children presented a seropositivity rate of 23.91%, in group B of 42.85% and in group C of 56%, which indicates an increase in frequency as age advances, probably because of greater chances of contact with infective forms of the parasite since canines and soil are frequently infected with T. canis eggs. Abandoned children come from poor households, under highly unsanitary conditions resulting from inadequate or lack of water supply and sewer networks, and frequent promiscuity with canines, which promotes the occurrence of parasitic diseases. These children are highly vulnerable due to their orphanhood status and age.
