Abstract
Tandem repeat genetic profiles used in forensic applications varies between populations. Despite the diversity and security issues in the Sahel that require the identification of victims (soldiers and civilians), Burkina Faso (BF) remains understudied. To fill this information gap, 396 unrelated individuals from BF were genotyped using a MICROREADER 21 ID System kit. All 20 short tandem repeat (STR) loci tested passed the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) test. The combined powers of exclusion for duos (CPE duos) and trios (CPE trios) for the 20 tested loci were 0.9999998 and 0.9999307, respectively. The probability that two individuals would share the same DNA profiles among the BF population was 9.80898 × 10-26. For the X-chromosome STR analysis, 292 individuals were included in this study using a MICROREADER 19X Direct ID System kit. Among the 19 loci, no significant deviations from HWE test were observed in female samples after Bonferroni correction (p < 0.05/19 = 0.0026), except for loci GATA165B12 and DXS7423. The results showed that the combined power of exclusion (CPE) and the combined power of discrimination in females (CPDF) and males (CPDM) were 0.999999760893, 0.999999999992, and 1, respectively. Comparison with other African sub-populations showed that geographical proximity is a reliable indicator of genetic relatedness.

Abstract
ABSTRA Osteological collections are an important resource for the development of methods to assist in the study of skeletal remains in archeological and/or forensic contexts. The aim is to describe the current characteristics of the Identified Skeletal Collection of the School of Legal Medicine and its historical context. The Identified Skeletal Collection of the School of Legal Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid consists of 138 male and 95 female individuals, born between 1880 and 1980 and deceased between 1970 and 2009. The minimum age of the sample is perinatal and the maximum age is 97 years. The collection is an essential tool for forensic research, given that its population characteristics can be extrapolated to those of present-day Spain. Access to this collection offers unique teaching opportunities as well as provides the information necessary to develop various lines of research.

Abstract
The Tibetan people are ancient and populous, constituting the seventh-largest of the fifty-five ethnic minority groups in China. The Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture (NTQAP), situated on the border of northwest and southwest China, has its distinct group relationships. Short tandem repeat (STR) is extremely polymorphic and extensively used in the application of forensic medicine and population genetics. However, it is not clear the genetic information including linkage disequilibrium (LD) by 36 autosomal STR (A-STR) markers in the Tibetan group from NTQAP. The Tibetan population from NTQAP of southwest China was examined for 36 A-STR loci in the research. Every marker across the 36 A-STR loci was consistent with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). The results of the calculation revealed that the total discrimination power (TDP) is 1-2.2552 × 10-42 and the cumulative probability of exclusion (CPE) is 1-1.3031 × 10-16. Subsequently, a total of 345 alleles with allelic frequencies ranging from 0.00382 to 0.55343 were identified, and the allelic numbers varied from 5 in both the TH01 and TPOX markers to 28 in the SE33 locus. The Ngawa Tibetan population, along with other Chinese populations, exhibited influences from historical factors and regional distribution, as indicated by the results of population genetics analysis. We thus first explored the genetic characteristics and correlated forensic parameters of the 36 A-STR markers in NTQAP to fill the gap in the Tibetan population. It was discovered that these 36 autosomal STR markers supplemented forensic STR databases and offered extremely valuable polymorphisms for Chinese forensic applications, such as parentage testing and personal identification. Moreover, the study would contribute additional information regarding the substructure and diversity in the Chinese population.

Abstract
The external human ear is considered to be highly variable among individuals. Hence, forensic applications could be explored for human identification. This research compares the usefulness of Cameriere's ear identification method, in samples originating from six different countries (Brazil, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa and Turkey) in order to examine possible differences in their accuracy values. A sample of 2,225 photographs of the external human ear (1,134 left and 1,091 right ears) from 1,411 individuals (633 females and 778 males) was collected. The samples included healthy subjects with no systemic disorders and without any craniofacial trauma, maxillofacial abnormalities, auricular anomalies, ear diseases or previous auricular surgery. Cameriere's ear identification method was applied and measurements were performed on the images of each ear, considering four anatomic regions: helix, antihelix, concha, and lobe. The quantified measurement values were converted into a proposed coded number system. A search for identical codes was accomplished to find out the distinctiveness of the morphology of the human ear. The combined codes of left and right ears of each of the 814 subjects were not repeated in this multi-ethnic study sample. Dirichlet's distribution and the inherent study equation showed that the probability of two different individuals having the same code (false-positive identification) was found to be <0.0007. Because of the distinctive metrics of the ratios of external human ears, studies with Cameriere's ear identification method may be valuable for human identification. Studying the differences between the left and right ears of the same individual and across different ethnic groups could contribute to the development of supplementary tools for human identification.

Abstract
PowerPlex® CS7 multiplex is commonly used as a source of supplementary markers in parentage and kinship studies. We analysed a total of 687 unrelated individuals from 94 geographically different localities across all Federal Districts of the Russian Federation and provide forensically important parameters and allele frequencies. The paper also presents results of an intra-population genetic diversity study between the populations of the Federal Districts and comparison with populations from various regions of the world.

Abstract
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has shed light on every aspect of genetic discoveries, including forensic genetics. The Miseq® FGx Forensic Genetic System (Verogen) is one of the pioneering forensic NGS that provided a complete system from library preparation to data analysis. The system has been validated by several studies and led to a more practical aspect. Short tandem repeat (STR) is a well-established marker that was designed specifically for human individualization. Since NGS provides different data from fragment analysis, a new STR nomenclature is established to make NGS backward compatible with the previous data. In this study, Thai population were used to evaluate the Miseq® FGx Forensic genetic system (Verogen) in practical aspect, including concordance study and forensic population parameters. In summary, we purposed a practical guideline for sequence-based STRs.

Abstract
The complex demographic history of human populations in North Africa has resulted in a high degree of genetic heterogeneity across the region. However, little is known about the pattern of these genetic variations in its current populations. The present study provides new data on the genetic background of Chaouia, an Arabic-speaking North African population in the western center of Morocco. A random sample of 150 unrelated healthy individuals from Chaouia was assessed using the AmpFLSTR Identifiler kit. The most polymorphic markers were D21S11 and D18S51, with 23 and 22 alleles, respectively. After Bonferroni's correction, two loci (TH01 and D18S51) deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The phylogeny analysis separated North African populations into northeastern and northwestern groups. The Chaouia population was clustered with northwestern Africans. It was the closest to the Berbers of Azrou. The Chaouia shared close genetic affinities with populations from North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, particularly Iberians, and to a lesser extent with sub-Saharan populations. The pattern of genetic admixture varied across North African populations without a clear correlation between their geographic (northeastern or northwestern) or linguistic identities (Arab or Berber), however, genetic heterogeneity among Berbers was observed. These findings suggest that the diversity observed in North African populations extends geographical and linguistic boundaries. It is further linked to each population's unique and complex demographic history. Human North African population genetics seems to present an intriguing landscape for future studies in the region and its surrounding populations to trace the origins of the genetic heterogeneity observed in these populations.

Abstract
The craniological collection at the Human Anatomy Museum of the University of Turin consists of 1090 skulls and 64 postcranial skeletons prepared mostly during the second half of the nineteenth century. The collection presents individuals of both sexes and of different age groups and includes 712 skulls of known age and sex and 378 of which only the sex is known. Most individuals are associated with a documentation that includes sex, age-at-death, dates of birth and a death certificate. The collection comes from several regions of Italy, between 1880 and 1915, received by the former Anatomical Institute of the University of Turin from city's prisons and hospitals. The whole craniological collection of known age was subjected to panoramic radiographs. The craniological collection combined with the panoramic digital X-ray images represents an important contribution in anthropology and forensic odontology, as there is now no craniological collection available in the world available from a radiological perspective, for investigating dental age assessment and sex dimorphism using radiographs as well as other research and teaching potentials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Life-Space Assessment (LSA) can compliment traditional physical performance measures of mobility by accounting for the interaction between individuals and their environment. However, there are no studies that have generated percentile curves showing sex-stratified reference values in a large population-based sample of community-dwelling adults, making its interpretation difficult. Therefore, this study aimed to establish sex-stratified reference values for the LSA in middle-aged and older Canadians. METHODS Baseline data for participants aged 45-84 years old from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) were used (n = 22,154). Quantile regression was used to estimate specific percentiles, with age as the independent variable and LSA scores as the dependent variable. Models were run for the whole sample, then separately for males and females. The models were cross-validated to assess their reliability. CLSA inflation and analytic weights were applied. RESULTS On average, the sample was 62.5 ± 10.0 y.o. (51.1% males), with a weighted mean LSA score of 89.2 ± 17.0. There was also a decrease in LSA scores with age, where scores were lower for older age groups compared to younger groups, and LSA scores were lower for females relative to males. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Reference data will aid in interpreting, comparing, and making inferences related to LSA scores obtained in clinical and research settings for Canadian adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Targeted interventions for suicide prevention rely on adequate identification of groups at elevated risk. Several risk factors for suicide are known, but little is known about the interactions between risk factors. Interactions between risk factors may aid in detecting more specific sub-populations at higher risk. METHODS Here, we use a novel machine learning heuristic to detect sub-populations at ultra high-risk for suicide based on interacting risk factors. The data-driven and hypothesis-free model is applied to investigate data covering the entire population of the Netherlands. FINDINGS We found three sub-populations with extremely high suicide rates (i.e. >50 suicides per 100,000 person years, compared to 12/100,000 in the general population), namely: (1) people on unfit for work benefits that were never married, (2) males on unfit for work benefits, and (3) those aged 55-69 who live alone, were never married and have a relatively low household income. Additionally, we found two sub-populations where the rate was higher than expected based on individual risk factors alone: widowed males, and people aged 25-39 with a low level of education. INTERPRETATION Our model is effective at finding ultra-high risk groups which can be targeted using sub-population level interventions. Additionally, it is effective at identifying high-risk groups that would not be considered risk groups based on conventional risk factor analysis.

Abstract
Identification of living undocumented individuals highlights the need for accurate, precise, and reproducible age estimation methods, especially in those cases involving minors. However, when their country of origin is unknown, or it can be only roughly estimated, it is extremely difficult to apply assessment policies, procedures, and practices that are accurate and child-sensitive. The main aim of this research is to optimize the correct classification of adults and minors by establishing new cut-off values for four different continents (Africa, America, Asia, and Europe). For this purpose, a vast sample of 10,701 orthopantomographs (OPTs) from four continents was evaluated. For determination and subsequent validation of the new third molar maturity index (I3M) cut-off values by world regions, a cross-validation by holdout method was used and contingency tables (confusion matrices) were generated. The lower third molar maturity indexes, from both left and right side (I3ML and I3MR) and the combination of both sides (I3ML_I3MR) were calculated. The new cut-off values, that aim to differentiate between a minor and an adult, with more than 74.00% accuracy for all populations were as follows (I3ML; I3MR; I3ML_I3MR, respectively): Africa = (0.10; 0.10; 0.10), America = (0.10; 0.09; 0.09), Asia = (0.15; 0.17; 0.14), and Europe = (0.09; 0.09; 0.09). The higher sensitivity (Se) was detected for the I3ML for male African people (91%) and the higher specificity (Sp) of all the parameters (I3ML; I3MR; I3ML_I3MR) for Europeans both male and female (> 91%). The original cut-off value (0.08) is still useful, especially in discriminating individuals younger than 18 years old which is the goal of the forensic methods used for justice.

Abstract
In human identification methods that target short tandem repeats (STRs), massively parallel sequencing (MPS) technology has made it possible to genotype at the level of the specific sequence itself. This allows for the detection of repeat unit variants and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) adjacent to the STRs. Using the GlobalFiler™ NGS STR Panel v2, Ion S5, and Converge software, this study constructed a Japanese database of 31 autosomal STRs (auSTRs) and two sex markers from 322 individuals. After excluding some sequence errors and stutters, a total of 31 novel alleles were identified. Additionally, using the allele frequencies of 31 auSTR loci, the match probabilities for the length-based and sequence-based data were calculated to be 1.433 × 10-34 and 9.163 × 10-38, respectively. These values are at least nine orders of magnitude higher than that obtained from 21 auSTR loci in the Japanese population using the conventional capillary electrophoresis method. The database generated in this study is expected to be implemented in forensic practice and used to solve difficult casework.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous work has demonstrated that cannabis laws have had a disproportionate impact on Māori, the Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand. In 2019, the New Zealand Government amended cannabis laws, providing police with the power to determine whether a therapeutic or health-centred approach would be more beneficial than a conviction. In the current study, we use population level data to assess whether this law change has ameliorated the bias in cannabis convictions for Māori. METHODS Data were drawn from the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI), a large government database hosted by Aotearoa New Zealand's national statistics office. In the IDI, we selected individuals who (1) were between 18 and 65, (2) were Māori or Pākehā (New Zealanders of European descent) and, (3) had any cannabis charges that proceeded to the courts. RESULTS Māori ethnicity was a significant predictor of the odds of receiving a cannabis conviction for Māori males (Odds: 1.56), with a marginally significant effect for Māori females (Odds: 1.57). Further, for Māori, there was no reduction in the number of cannabis charges before vs. after the amendment to cannabis laws. CONCLUSION The current study demonstrates that the bias in cannabis convictions for Māori remain. Given this, the New Zealand Government must follow other countries around the world and move forward on cannabis law reform.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Most countries initially deployed COVID-19 vaccines preferentially in elderly populations. We aimed to evaluate whether population-level vaccine effectiveness is heralded by an increase in the relative proportion of deaths among non-elderly populations that were less covered by vaccination programs. ELIGIBLE DATA We collected data from 40 countries on age-stratified COVID-19 deaths during the vaccination period (1/14/2021-5/31/2021) and two control periods (entire pre-vaccination period and excluding the first wave). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES We meta-analyzed the proportion of deaths in different age groups in vaccination versus control periods in (1) countries with low vaccination rates; (2) countries with age-independent vaccination policies; and (3) countries with standard age-dependent vaccination policies. RESULTS Countries that prioritized vaccination among older people saw an increasing share of deaths among 0-69 year old people in the vaccination versus the two control periods (summary proportion ratio 1.32 [95 CI% 1.24-1.41] and 1.35 [95 CI% 1.26-1.44)]. No such change was seen on average in countries with age-independent vaccination policies (1.05 [95 CI% 0.78-1.41 and 0.97 [95 CI% 0.95-1.00], respectively) and limited vaccination (0.93 [95 CI% 0.85-1.01] and 0.95 [95 CI% 0.87-1.03], respectively). Proportion ratios were associated with the difference of vaccination rates in elderly versus non-elderly people. No significant changes occurred in the share of deaths in age 0-49 among all 0-69 deaths in the vaccination versus pre-vaccination periods. CONCLUSIONS The substantial shift in the age distribution of COVID-19 deaths in countries that rapidly implemented vaccination predominantly among elderly provides evidence for the population level-effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination and a favorable evolution of the pandemic towards endemicity with fewer elderly deaths.

Physically-active adults are more likely to consume alcohol, but this association may vary if adults also use other substances (i.e., tobacco and/or cannabis), which could increase substance-use related harms. This study examined whether tobacco and/or cannabis use moderated the associations between physical activity, odds of drinking and alcohol drinks/week. We used cross-sectional 2005-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (United States of America). Physical activity was assessed using device-based and self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and total physical activity hours/week. Individuals were categorized into one of four (poly)substance use categories, no tobacco/no cannabis, tobacco, cannabis, or tobacco/cannabis use. Regression models examined substance use as a moderator of the association between physical activity and the odds of drinking versus not drinking and alcohol drinks/week among light/moderate/heavy drinkers (≥12 drinks/year). Using cannabis or tobacco weakened the significant positive associations between total physical activity and self-reported recreational MVPA hours/week on odds of drinking (ORs = 0.978 and 0.967, respectively), such that the effect was negative or null when using cannabis or tobacco, respectively. Greater total physical activity and device-based MVPA hours/week was associated with consuming greater drinks/week (IRRs = 1.003 and 1.035, respectively). Using tobacco weakened the association between device-based MVPA and alcohol drinks/week (IRR = 0.934, 95% CI: [0.888, 0.982]). Cannabis and tobacco use weakened the association between physical activity and alcohol use. The positive association between physical activity and alcohol use may be limited to single substance users of alcohol and could reflect shared reasons for engaging in these behaviors, such as stress management or social motives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND X-chromosome specific short tandem repeats (X-STR) are indispensable for parentage analysis, kinship determination and forensic casework. AIM To determine allelic frequencies and forensic parameters of the 12 X-STR markers from the Investigator® Argus X-12® kit panel for the population of the Russian Federation. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We analysed 803 unrelated individuals from 58 localities across the Russian Federation. Intra-population genetic diversity was evaluated and comparison of the Russian population with 19 geographically distant populations performed. RESULTS Heterozygosity values across all the loci ranged from 0.685 for DXS7423 to 0.939 for DXS10135. Deviations from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were observed for DXS10074 (p < 0.05) and DXS10146 (p < 0.01). The value for power of discrimination across all the loci in males was 0.9999999996, while in females it equalled 0.9999999999. Combined mean exclusion chances MECKruger, MECKishida, MECD-trio, and MECD-duo were 0.9999988168, 0.9999999983, 0.9999999983, and 0.9999995797, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated small genetic differences between the Russian population and the populations of neighbouring Lithuania, Belarus and the Slavic-speaking countries (Czech Republic, Serbia and Croatia). CONCLUSIONS This paper is the first report of forensically important parameters and allele frequencies for the 12 X-STR loci included in Argus X-12® marker system in the population of the Russian Federation.

Abstract
X-chromosomal STRs are a powerful tool to assess a broad variety of complex kinship scenarios. We introduce herewith the first Swiss X-STR dataset based on 1198 individuals (592 female, 606 male), characterized with the Qiagen Investigator® Argus X-12 QS multiplex kit. Anomalous allele patterns, allele and haplotype frequencies, and forensic and population genetic parameters are presented. We detected linkage disequilibrium within three out of the four designated linkage groups and no apparent intra-national population substructure. We compared the dataset to a global panel of X-STR datasets and it fits well in the European context, as expected.

Abstract
The diagnostic accuracy of the I3M to assess the legal age of 18 years has already been tested in several specific-population samples. The left lower third molar has been extensively used for discriminating between minors and adults. This research aimed to compare the usefulness of lower third molar maturity indexes, from both left and right side (I3ML and I3MR), in samples originating from four distinct continents in order to examine possible differences in their accuracy values. For this purpose, a sample of 10,181 orthopantomograms (OPGs), from Europe, Africa, Asia and America, was analysed and previously scored in other studies. The samples included healthy subjects with no systemic disorders with both third molars and clear depicted root apices. Wilcoxon Signed Rank test for left and right asymmetry did not show any significant differences. Data about sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, likelihood ratio and accuracy were pooled together and showed similar results for I3ML and I3MR, respectively. In addition, all these quantities were high when only the I3MR was considered to discriminate between adults and minors. The present referable database was the first to pool third molar measurements using panoramic radiographs of subjects coming from different continents. The results highlighted that both I3ML and I3MR are reliable indicators for assessing the legal age of 18 years old in those jurisdictions where this legal threshold has been set as the age of majority.

By genotyping 1198 individuals with the Qiagen Investigator® HDplex Kit, we expand the Swiss autosomal STR dataset to 32 loci, providing additional resources for complex kinship cases. We present the first high-quality allele frequency dataset for loci D2S1360, D5S2500, D7S1517, and D10S2325 that will be accessible through the ENFSI reference database STRidER. For loci D3S1744, D4S2366, D6S474, D8S1132, and D21S2055, we provide a first European STRidER dataset.

Abstract
This is the first report of a nation-wide study of the 27-STR Yfiler® Plus panel in the population of the Russian Federation. A total of 691 unrelated males from 89 locations split into seven subpopulations were analysed. Forensic parameters, haplotype and allele frequencies and presented. Inter-population comparison indicated the biggest genetic differences with the population of Italy and the smallest with that of Hungary. Haplogroup R1a was the most common and haplogroup J2a4h was the rarest in the Russian population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to test the validity of a previously proposed lateral angle (LA) method for sex assessment of human skeletal remains in the forensic setting. MATERIAL AND METHODS Computed tomography (CT) scans of 102 crania of Greek adults were used to test the validity of the LA method for sex estimation. The measurement procedure used in this study is a modified version of a method previously proposed by Akansel et al. (2008). RESULTS Despite the LA values being larger for females, the difference was not found to be statistically significant. Sectioning point of 45° provided a low accuracy rate of 53 %. CONCLUSIONS The poor accuracy of the LA method obtained in this study proved it to be of no value in sex estimation. Future studies should examine a broader aspect of the petrous portion morphology in order to establish a more accurate method of forensic sex estimation.

Abstract
Age estimation of living individuals has become a crucial part of the forensic practice, especially due to the global increase in cross-border migration. The low rate of birth registration in many countries, hence of identification documents of migrants, especially in Africa and Asia, highlights the importance of reliable methods for age estimation of living individuals. Despite the fact that a number of skeletal and dental methods for age estimation have been developed, their main limitation is that they are based on specific reference samples and there is still no consensus among researchers on whether these methods can be applied to all populations. Though this issue remains still unsolved, population information at a glance could be useful for forensic practitioners dealing with such issues. This study aims at presenting a scoping review and mapping of the current situation concerning population data for skeletal (hand-wrist and clavicle) and dental methods (teeth eruption and third molar formation) for age estimation in the living. Two hundred studies on the rate of skeletal maturation and four hundred thirty-nine on the rate of dental maturation were found, covering the period from 1952 and 2020 for a total of ninety-eight countries. For most of the western and central African countries there are currently no data on the rate of skeletal and dental maturation. The same applies to the countries of the Middle East, as well as the eastern European countries, especially as regard the skeletal development.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Forensic characterization and genetic evaluation study in the 539 randomly selected unrelated adult healthy individuals belonging to the Central Indian population was undertaken. METHODS The study was performed using a multiplex of 27 Y-STRs incoporated in Yfiler™ Plus multiplex kit. RESULTS Out of 539 samples, 6 samples were observed for large deletion and tri-allelic patterns, which were removed from the analysis, and out of 533 samples, a total of 507 haplotypes were found, and out of these haplotypes, 482 unique haplotypes were found in this piece of work. The forensically important parameters, i.e., gene diversity (GD) and discrimination capacity (DC), were found to be 0.669 and 0.951, respectively, for the tested Y STR loci. The genetic data of this study will enrich the Y STR data bank and being used as a potential tool for forensic DNA and various genetic studies.

Abstract
Estimation of the age-at-death in adults is essential when the identification of deceased persons with unknown identity is required in both humanitarian and judicial contexts. However, the methodologies and the results obtained can be questioned. Various efforts have been developed to adjust procedures to specific populations, always seeking the precision and accuracy of the methodologies. It is known that the estimation of the age-at-death in adults coexists with wide margins of error, due to several reasons, including but not limited to statistical problems, the size of the sample or the physiological process of aging. This research focuses on a degenerative indicator of the dentin (Root Dentin Translucency) and its combination with Periodontal Height (PH) following the Lamendin's technique for estimation of the age-at-death in adults. The main objective of this research was to demonstrate the applicability of a Bayesian model based on a Forensic International Dental Database (FIDB) that include Root Translucency Height (RTH) and PH as a method to age-at-death in adults. The conclusion of this research was that the combined both indicators become a generalizable age-at-death in adults model for all human populations, where the Bayesian method would offer optimal results in any population. In this way, those populations that do not have had the possibility of validating a specific procedure, now have the opportunity to apply a valid method for estimating age-at-death in adults to global scope.

Abstract
The study describes the development of a new multiplex PCR system that simultaneously amplifies 16 X chromosome short tandem repeats (X-STRs) loci in a single PCR reaction and its applicability on a sample of 200 from the Sinhalese population in Sri Lanka. 13 X-STR loci located in four clusters are selected for the assay (DXS10148-DXS10135-DXS8378, DXS7132-DXS10079-DXS10074-DXS10075, DXS6801-DXS6809-DXS6789 and DXS7424-DXS101-DXS7133). In addition, three single loci were also selected (DXS9902, HPRTB and DXS7423). Genomic DNA extracted using the Chelex-100 method was amplified with modified published primers and subjected to capillary gel electrophoresis. Complete DNA profiles were obtained with 0.20 ng 9947A DNA and the band sizes ranged between 100 and 320 bp with 10 loci having sizes below 237 bp. A total of 160 alleles were observed among the sample with 5-23 alleles for each locus. The forensic efficiency evaluation showed high values for the combined power of discrimination in males (1 in 1 × 1010) and females (1 in 1 × 1017). Combined mean exclusion chance (MEC) indices calculated for deficiency, normal trio and duo cases were equally high (> 0.99999). Application of the new multiplex system to two actual kinship cases of full sibling and deficient paternity suggested that these 16 short tandem repeat loci are highly appropriate for forensic and kinship testing among the Sinhalese population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is associated with many ECG changes. ECG abnormalities are known to be more prevalent with age and differ across race and ethnicity, yet there are limited studies categorizing the ECG changes in the older population and the differences seen among racial groups. We sought to determine ECG differences associated with race and ethnicity in this ethnically diverse, elderly population. METHODS The ECG parameters of subjects between the ages of 75 and 99 years from a large and diverse inner-city patient population were analyzed. Subjects were grouped into one of four categories: Hispanic, Black, Non-Hispanic White, or Other for analysis. Rhythm, axis, voltage, and conduction parameters were determined according to the 12 SL algorithm and interpretation statements (GE Healthcare, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) that were confirmed by an overreading cardiologist. RESULTS 38,238 subjects were included. Of all groups, Non-Hispanic Whites exhibited more conduction abnormalities such as bundle branch block compared to the other groups, as well as the highest incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) (12.6%, p < 0.05). Hispanics had the highest proportion of normal sinus rhythm. Blacks exhibited the least amount of AF (6.3%), as well as the highest incidence of LVH (25.5%), RAD (13.5%), and the largest percentage of abnormal ECGs (72.8%). CONCLUSION Significant differences among the elderly of different race and ethnicity were noted with most parameters.

Abstract
This data article provides population frequencies for 21 autosomal and two sex determining short tandem repeat (STR) loci in unrelated Kedayan individuals. This article is related to the research paper entitled “Forensic parameters and ancestral fraction in the Kedayan population inferred using 21 autosomal STR loci” [1] where these same data were subjected to ancestry and forensic analyses. We have collected 200 blood samples consisting of 128 male and 72 female volunteer representatives from Kedayan people residing in various parts of Borneo. All 23 STR loci were simultaneously amplified using Globalfiler™ Express PCR and amplicons were separated using an ABI 3500xl Genetic Analyzer. The STR allele calls at each locus were called using GeneMapperⓇ ID-X Software v1.4, while several algorithms in Arlequin software version 3.5 were used to estimate Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) and linkage disequilibrium (LD) between pairs of STR loci.

Abstract
This study was conducted to come up with data on Y-STR markers for the population of Rajasthan comprising of the western arid region of India. Y-STR analysis is an established tool in forensic DNA casework and ancestry research. We analyzed 23 Y-STRs in randomly selected 310 unrelated individuals living within the geographical area of Rajasthan to establish parameters of forensic interest. Out of 310 haplotypes, 309 unique haplotypes were observed, which revealed a high discrimination capacity with a value of 0.997 for the studied loci. The gene diversity (GD) and haplotype diversity (HD) for the studied 23 Y STRs were found to be 0.664 and 0.666, respectively. In the population of Rajasthan, locus DYS385a/b showed the highest gene diversity with a value of 0.829 among all the studied loci. The studied population showed genetic relatedness with the populations of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

Abstract
Forensic genetic laboratories perform a large amount of STR analyses of the Y chromosome, in particular to analyze the male part of complex DNA mixtures. However, the statistical interpretation of evidence retrieved from Y-STR haplotypes is challenging. Due to the uni-parental inheritance mode, Y-STR loci are connected to each other and thus haplotypes show patterns of relationship on the familial and population level. This precludes the treatment of Y-STR loci as independently inherited variables and the application of the product rule. Instead, the dependency structure of Y-STRs needs to be included in the haplotype frequency estimation process affecting also the current paradigm of a random match probability that is in the autosomal case approximated by the population frequency assuming unrelatedness of sampled individuals. Information on the degree of paternal relatedness in the suspect population as well as on the familial network is however needed to interpret Y-chromosomal results in the best possible way. The previous recommendations of the DNA commission of the ISFG on the use of Y-STRs in forensic analysis published more than a decade ago [1] cover the interpretation issue only marginally. The current recommendations address a number of topics (frequency estimators, databases, metapopulations, LR formulation, triage, rapidly mutating Y-STRs) with relevance for the Y-STR statistics and recommend a decision-based procedure, which takes into account legal requirements as well as availability of population data and statistical methods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this analysis were to 1) estimate prevalence of contraceptive use among women at risk for unintended pregnancy and 2) identify correlates of contraceptive use among women with ongoing or potential need for contraceptive services in Puerto Rico during the 2016 Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak. STUDY DESIGN We conducted a cell-phone survey July-November, 2016. Women aged 18-49 years living in Puerto Rico were eligible. We completed 3059 interviews; the overall response rate was 69.2%. After weighting, the data provide population-based estimates. For this analysis, we included women at risk for unintended pregnancy, and assessed ongoing or potential need for contraceptive services in this group, excluding women using permanent contraceptive methods. RESULTS Most women reported using contraception (82.8%), and use increased with age. Female sterilization and male condoms were most frequently reported (40.8% and 17.1%, respectively). Among women with ongoing or potential need for contraceptive services, 24.7% talked to a healthcare provider about ZIKV, and 31.2% reported a change in childbearing intentions due to ZIKV. Most women were at least a little worried about getting infected with ZIKV (74.3%) or having a baby with a birth defect (80.9%). Being very worried about getting infected with ZIKV and already having Zika were significantly associated with use of any contraception (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.03-1.38 and 1.32, 95% CI: 1.01-1.72, respectively). CONCLUSIONS These findings underscore the need for regular contraceptive prevalence studies to inform programs about contraceptive needs, especially during public health emergencies. IMPLICATIONS When the 2016 Zika virus outbreak began in Puerto Rico there were no recent population-based data available on contraceptive prevalence. To fill this information gap, we conducted a population-based survey. Our findings provided baseline contraceptive prevalence estimates to support response planning and allocation of health resources.

Abstract
Massively Parallel Sequencing (MPS) applied to forensic genetics allows the simultaneous analysis of hundreds of genetic markers and the access to full amplicon sequences which help to increase available allele diversity. Meanwhile, sequence variation within the repeat regions represents the majority of the allele diversity, flanking regions adjacent to the repeat core provide an additional degree of variation. The forensic genetics community needs access to population data, from relevant parts of the world that contain this new sequence diversity in order to perform statistical calculations. In this study, we report sequence-based Short Tandem Repeat (STR) and identity Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (iSNPs) allele data for 169 French individuals across 58 STRs and 92 SNPs included in the Verogen ForenSeq DNA Signature Prep kit. 42 STRs out of 58 showed an increased number of alleles due to sequence variation in the repeat motif and/or the flanking regions. D9S1122 showed the largest overall gain with an increase of observed heterozygosities of almost 25 %. The combined match probability combining 27 autosomal STRs and 91 identity SNPs was 1.11E-69. Sequence-based allele frequencies included in this publication will help forensic laboratories to increase the power of discrimination for identification, kinship analysis and mixture interpretation.

Abstract
The use of 21 autosomal STR loci for human identification has been gaining popularity throughout the world. It has been indicated that the forensic statistical parameters for supporting the use of 21 STR loci varied among different populations. Hitherto, such data for the diverse Malaysian populations remain unreported, rendering doubts in the court of law about its real ability for human identification in Malaysian population. Using the GlobalFiler™ Express PCR Amplification Kit, complete DNA profiles of 21 STR loci from buccal swabs of convicted Malaysian criminal (n = 570; 190 each for Malays, Chinese, and Indians) (by the year 2016-2017) were analyzed for their allele frequencies, exact test of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, observed and expected heterozygosity, power of discrimination, power of exclusion, match probability, and polymorphism information content. Most of the loci were found to be in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium after the Bonferroni correction. Being the most informative locus, SE33 demonstrated the highest power of discrimination and power of exclusion, indicating its usefulness to discriminate individuals. In contrast, TPOX had the lowest power of discrimination and power of exclusion, as well as being the less informative genetic locus for all Malaysian population studied here. The probabilities that two individuals would share the same DNA profiles among the Malaysian Malays, Chinese, and Indians, as well as in general Malaysian population, were 1.3713 × 10-25, 2.8822 × 10-25, 7.5668 × 10-26, and 1.0385 × 10-26, respectively. The results obtained here were found comparable with similar studies reported in other populations. Hence, its robustness for forensic human identification among the Malaysian populations is, therefore, statistically supported.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human neutrophil antigens (HNAs) are implicated in several clinical disorders and their allelic variations have been reported for many populations. This new study was aimed to report the genotype and alleles frequencies of HNA-1, -3, -4 and -5 loci in Malays, Chinese and Indians in Peninsular Malaysia. METHODS A total of 222 blood samples were collected from healthy, unrelated Malay, Chinese and Indian individuals. Their HNA-1, -3 and -4 and HNA-5 loci were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primer (PCR-SSP) or PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assays. RESULTS All HNA loci are polymorphic, except for HNA -4. Geneotypes HNA-1a/1b, -3a/3b and -4a/4a were observed most frequently at these three loci in all three ethnic groups. In contrast, HNA-5a/5b and -5a/5a were observed as the predominant genotypes in Malays vs. Chinese and Indians, respectively. The Malays, Chinese and Indians shared HNA -3a (0.505-0.527), HNA -4a (1.000) and -5a (0.676-0.854) as the most frequent alleles. However, HNA-1a was found to be the most common in Malays (0.506) and Chinese (0.504) and HNA-1b for Indians (0.525). CONCLUSION Combined with HNA data that have been published for Malay subethnic and Orang Asli groups, this study provides the first fully comprehensive HNA dataset for populations to be found in Peninsular Malaysia. Overall, our findings provide further evidence of genetic complexity in the region. This now publicly available HNA dataset can be used as a reliable reference source for improving medical outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is limited evidence examining the relationship between elevated serum uric acid (sUA) concentration and heart failure (HF) in United States (US) adults. The aim of the present study was to examine the association(s) between elevated sUA and HF using a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS The final sample with complete data for this analysis (n = 17,349) included men and women aged ≥40 years who participated in the 2007-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Self-reported diagnosis of HF was assessed via interview. Elevated sUA was defined as values >6.0 mg/dL for women and >7.2 mg/dL for men. Multivariable gender-stratified logistic regression was utilized to examine the odds of self-reported HF. RESULTS The estimated prevalence of HF was 3.9 and 3.4% among men and women, respectively. Age-adjusted analysis revealed significantly increased odds of HF in men (OR 2.79; 95% CI 2.15-3.84, p < 0.01) and women (OR 3.24; 95% CI 2.37-4.44, p < 0.01) with elevated sUA. This relationship remained statistically significant following adjustment for age, race, education, income, alcohol consumption, smoking status, blood pressure, diabetes, physical activity level, cholesterol, creatinine level, and body mass index in men (OR 1.70; 95% CI 1.13-2.57 p < 0.05) and women (OR 1.74; 95% CI 1.18-2.58, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In a representative sample of US adults, having an elevated sUA concentration was associated with significantly increased odds of HF when compared to adults with normal sUA.

Abstract
Although body mass is not a stable trait over the lifespan, information regarding body size assists the forensic identification of unknown individuals. In this study, we aimed to study the potential of using the fourth lumbar vertebra (L4) for body mass estimation among contemporary Finns. Our sample comprised 1158 individuals from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 who had undergone measurements of body mass at age 31 and 46 and lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at age 46. MRI scans were used to measure the maximum and minimum widths, depths, and heights of the L4 body. Their means and sum were calculated together with vertebral cross-sectional area (CSA) and volume. Ordinary least squares (OLS) and reduced major axis (RMA) regression was used to produce equations for body mass among the full sample (n = 1158) and among normal-weight individuals (n = 420). In our data, body mass was associated with all the L4 size parameters (R = 0.093-0.582, p ≤ 0.019 among the full sample; R = 0.243-0.696, p ≤ 0.002 among the normal-weight sample). RMA regression models seemed to fit the data better than OLS, with vertebral CSA having the highest predictive value in body mass estimation. In the full sample, the lowest standard errors were 6.1% (95% prediction interval ±9.6 kg) and 7.1% (±9.1 kg) among men and women, respectively. In the normal-weight sample, the lowest errors were 4.9% (±6.9 kg) and 4.7% (±5.7 kg) among men and women, respectively. Our results indicate that L4 dimensions are potentially useful in body mass estimation, especially in cases with only the axial skeleton available.

Abstract
Introduction Caregivers of children with health problems experience poorer health than the caregivers of healthy children. To date, population-based studies on this issue have primarily used survey data. Objectives We demonstrate that administrative health data may be used to study these issues, and explore how non-categorical indicators of child health in administrative data can enable population-level study of caregiver health. Methods Dyads from Population Data British Columbia (BC) databases, encompassing nearly all mothers in BC with children aged 6-10 years in 2006, were grouped using a non-categorical definition based on diagnoses and service use. Regression models examined whether four maternal health outcomes varied according to indicators of child health. Results 162,847 mother-child dyads were grouped according to the following indicators: Child High Service Use (18%) vs. Not (82%), Diagnosis of Major and/or Chronic Condition (12%) vs. Not (88%), and Both High Service Use and Diagnosis (5%) vs. Neither (75%). For all maternal health and service use outcomes (number of physician visits, chronic condition, mood or anxiety disorder, hospitalization), differences were demonstrated by child health indicators. Conclusions Mothers of children with health problems had poorer health themselves, as indicated by administrative data groupings. This work not only demonstrates the research potential of using routinely collected health administrative data to study caregiver and child health, but also the importance of addressing maternal health when treating children with health problems.

Abstract
Transition Analysis (TA) is an age estimation method for adult skeletons at death, using three skeletal traits together, namely, the cranial sutures (CS), the pubic symphyses (PS) and the auricular surfaces (AS). In forensic anthropology, estimating age at death is vital for positive identification of an individual; however, differences in skeletal elements have been observed between sex and population affinity. The aim of this study was to determine how accurately the TA could be applied to a population that differed from the original reference samples. Scoring methods, described by the authors of this analysis, were used to age individuals (n = 290) in the South African (SA) Mixed Ancestry population, which is a heterogenic population, consisting of many gene pools from different population groups. The results were compared to the actual ages of the skeletal remains, obtained through cadaver records, and the most likely age calculated by the TA, as well as age estimation by means of the three skeletal elements individually. Results showed that there was a significant correlation between the actual and estimated ages of the study population (Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.58). The AS was the most accurate trait, whereas the PS was the least accurate trait. In addition, females' estimated ages were more accurate than males. These findings correlated with other authors in terms of the significance of the TA when applied to different populations; however, the individual trait correlations were in disagreement with other authors. The results of this study are an important contribution to anthropological literature as they indicate that there are differences between populations and sex when determining age, but that the TA is still applicable for analysis on this heterogenic population.

Abstract
Head and neck angiosarcomas (HN-AS) are rare malignancies with a poor prognosis relative to other soft tissue sarcomas. To date, the HN-AS literature has been limited to short reports and single-institution experiences. This study evaluated patients registered with the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program who had been diagnosed with a primary HN-AS. Predictors were drawn from demographic and baseline tumor characteristics. Outcomes were survival months and cause of death. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to estimate overall (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) rates. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used for multivariate analyses. A total of 1250 patients (mean age 73.3 years) were identified, and nearly all lesions (93.5%) were cutaneous. Two- and 5-year OS rates were 47.3% (95% CI 44.3-50.3) and 26.5% (95% CI 23.7-29.3), while 2- and 5-year DSS rates were 66.6% (95% CI 63.6-69.6) and 48.3% (95% CI 44.5-52.1). In the univariate analyses, age, race, tumor grade, tumor size, AJCC stage, SEER historic stage, and surgery were significant predictors of both OS and DSS. Multivariate regression revealed that independent predictors of poor OS and DSS were older age [OS: HR 1.04 (95% CI 1.02-1.05), p < 0.01; DSS: HR 1.03 (95% CI 1.01-1.05), p < 0.01], increased tumor size [OS: HR 1.01 (95% CI 1.01-1.01), p < 0.01; DSS: HR 1.01 (95% CI 1.01-1.02), p < 0.01], and distant disease [OS: HR 2.97 (95% CI 1.65-5.34), p < 0.01; DSS: HR 4.99 (95% CI 2.50-9.98), p < 0.01]. Age, tumor size, and disease extent were determinants of HN-AS survival. When all other factors were controlled, lower histologic grade and surgery did not improve the risk of death.

Abstract
Precise population information is critical for identifying more accurate environmental exposures for air pollution impacts analysis. Basically, there are two methods for estimating spatial distribution of population, choropleth and dasymetric mapping. While the choropleth approach accounts for linear distribution of population over area based on census tract units, the dasymetric model accounts for a more heterogeneous population density by quantifying the association between the area-class map data categories and values of the statistical surface as encoded in the census dataset. Environmental epidemiological studies have indicated the dasymetric mapping as a more accurate approach to estimate and characterize population densities in large urban areas. However, investigations that have attempted to compare the exposure estimates from choropleth versus dasymetric mapping in environmental health analysis are still missing. This paper addresses this gap and compares the impact of using choropleth and dasymetric mapping in different exposure metrics. We compare the impact of using choropleth and dasymetric mapping in three case studies, defined here as case study A (relationship between urban structure types and health), case study B (PM2.5 emissions and human exposure), and case study C (distance-decays of mortality risk related to PM2.5 emitted by traffic along major highways). These case studies represent previous investigations performed by our research group where spatial distribution of population was an essential input for analysis. Our findings indicate that the method used to estimate spatial distribution of population impacts significantly the exposure estimates. We observed that the choropleth mapping overestimated exposure for the case study A and B, while for the case study C the exposure was underestimated by the choropleth approach. Our findings show that the dasymetric model is a preferred method for creating spatially-explicit information about population distribution for health exposure studies. The results presented here can be useful for the environmental health community to more accurately assess the relationship between environmental factors and health risks.

Abstract
The X chromosome has a special mode of inheritance, and is thus a rich resource for population studies. In this study, the allele frequencies and forensic statistics of the 19 X chromosomal short tandem repeat loci were evaluated in 500 Uyghur individuals from Aksu Prefecture in northwest China. We further aimed to study whether the Uyghur populations located in various regions of Xinjiang share similar allele and haplotype frequency distributions, as they have experienced genetic exchanges. Population comparisons, PCA and MDS were performed for the Uyghurs and 27 populations and the results indicate that the Uyghur minority in Aksu has a relatively close phylogenetic relationship with East Asians, especially the Kazakh minority.

Abstract
In the present study, population data of 19 autosomal STR loci included in the Goldeneye™ DNA ID System 20A in 653 Li individuals was obtained and population genetic relationships among 13 populations were investigated. MDS and phylogenetic analysis suggested that the Hainan Li population kept a close genetic relationship with the Chinese Han populations, especially for Southern Han populations (Guangdong Han, Sichuan Han, and Hunan Han). Our results indicated that the 19 autosomal STRs are highly discriminative and polymorphic in the Hainan Li population suitable for personal forensic identification and paternity testing.

Abstract
There is currently no large population data-based data set in Kashgar Prefecture Uyghur. The allele frequencies of 18 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci included in the DNATyper™ 19 kit were evaluated in 2600 Uyghur individuals living in Kashgar Prefecture, Northwest China. The values of combined power of discrimination (CPD) and combined probability of exclusion (CPE) of all 18 autosomal STR loci were 0.99999999999999999998235 and 0.99999998670, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the Uyghur population has a closer relationship with the Xinjiang-Kazakh, Inner Mongolia-Mongolian, and other three Uyghur populations. In addition, our results are consistent with the hypothesis that Uyghur population is an admixture of Eastern Asian and European populations.

Abstract
Background The incidence and incidence trends of breast cancer according to molecular subtype are unknown at a population level in France. The registry data enables this study and may give this information, that is crucial to describe and understand breast cancer epidemiology. Methods We estimated the incidence rates of breast cancer for each molecular subtype using data from three cancer registries in France for the period from 2007 to 2012. Molecular subtypes were defined with immunohistochemical data. Poisson models were estimated to modelize the course of breast cancer incidence and to test the trends. Results The study included 12,040 patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2012 in the three administrative areas covered by the registries. There was no significant trends in the proportion of each molecular subtype year by year. The age distribution of incident cases was different depending on the molecular subtypes (p < 0.001). The course of incidence between 2007 and 2012 was also different depending on molecular subtype according to the multivariate Poisson model (p < 0.001). Conclusion The description of incident cases of breast cancer according to molecular subtype at a population level showed differences in trends. The trends in incidence differed according to molecular subtype, and this should improve our understanding of overall changes in incidence. This analysis is important to plan screening and treatment resources at a population level.

Abstract
Short tandem repeats (STRs) play a vitally important role in forensics. Population data is needed to improve the field. There is currently no large population data-based data set in Chamdo Tibetan. In our study, the allele frequencies and forensic statistical parameters of 18 autosomal STR loci (D5S818, D21S11, D7S820, CSF1PO, D2S1338, D3S1358, VWA, D8S1179, D16S539, PentaE, TPOX, TH01, D19S433, D18S51, FGA, D6S1043, D13S317, and D12S391) included in the DNATyper™19 kit were investigated in 2249 healthy, unrelated Tibetan subjects living in Tibet Chamdo, Southwest China. The combined power of discrimination and the combined probability of exclusion of all 18 loci were 0.9999999999999999999998174 and 0.99999994704, respectively. Furthermore, the genetic relationship between our Tibetan group and 33 previously published populations was also investigated. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the Chamdo Tibetan population is more closely related genetically with the Lhasa Tibetan group. Our results suggest that these autosomal STR loci are highly polymorphic in the Tibetan population living in Tibet Chamdo and can be used as a powerful tool in forensics, linguistics, and population genetic analyses.

Abstract
The frontal bone is one of the most sexually dimorphic elements of the human skull, due to features such as the glabella, frontal eminences, and frontal inclination. While glabella is frequently evaluated in procedures to estimate sex in unknown human skeletal remains, frontal inclination has received less attention. In this study we present a straightforward, quick, and reproducible method for measuring frontal inclination angles from glabella and supraglabella. Using a sample of 413 human crania from four different populations (U.S. Whites, U.S. Blacks, Portuguese, and Chinese), we test the usefulness of the inclination angles for sex estimation and compare their performance to traditional methods of frontal inclination assessment. Accuracy rates in the range 75-81% were achieved for the U.S. White, U.S. Black, and Portuguese groups. For Chinese the overall accuracy was lower, i.e. 66%. Although some regional variation was observed, a cut-off value of 78.2° for glabellar inclination angles separates female and male crania from all studied populations with good accuracy. As inclination angles measured from glabella captures two sexually dimorphic features (i.e. glabellar prominence and frontal inclination) in a single measure, the observed clear male/female difference is not unexpected. Being continuous variables, inclination angles are suitable for use in statistical methods for sex estimations.

Abstract
A collaborative effort was carried out by the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Working Group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (GHEP-ISFG) to promote knowledge exchange between associate laboratories interested in the implementation of indel-based methodologies and build allele frequency databases of 38 indels for forensic applications. These databases include populations from different countries that are relevant for identification and kinship investigations undertaken by the participating laboratories. Before compiling population data, participants were asked to type the 38 indels in blind samples from annual GHEP-ISFG proficiency tests, using an amplification protocol previously described. Only laboratories that reported correct results contributed with population data to this study. A total of 5839 samples were genotyped from 45 different populations from Africa, America, East Asia, Europe and Middle East. Population differentiation analysis showed significant differences between most populations studied from Africa and America, as well as between two Asian populations from China and East Timor. Low FST values were detected among most European populations. Overall diversities and parameters of forensic efficiency were high in populations from all continents.

Abstract
The resolution of DNA mixtures is still a difficult problem that is worthy of further study. A common method applied for analysing mixtures is the use of autosomal STR markers as well as related calculation software based on genotypes; however, these markers have a limitation in detecting minor DNA in unbalanced mixtures if major DNA constitutes over 95% of the stain. Novel biomarkers, such as Y-STR, DIP-STR and SNP-STR, have been shown to perform well in distinguishing DNA donors in this type of mixture. DIP-STR can successfully target minor DNA in 1000-fold background DNA using two separate allele-specific primers. However, whether this method can successfully detect minor DNA primarily depends on the distribution of the DIPs in a population. Until now, only Swiss population data have been reported; therefore in this study, we selected 10 DIP-STR markers that performed well in the Swiss population and investigated whether these markers were also useful among the southwest Chinese Han population. The allele frequencies were estimated based on 152 samples, and six of the ten DIP-STR makers had a relatively high probability of informative markers (I value), which indicated their potential usefulness in the southwest Chinese Han population. A comparative study of DIP-STR markers and autosomal STR markers demonstrated that DIP-STR markers detected minor DNA at a ratio of 1:1000, while autosomal STR markers often failed to genotype minor DNA because of strong background noises caused by large amount of major DNA. However, the discrimination power was not high enough using these six DIPs alone. Therefore, we suggest that development of a panel with more loci is imperative and that a panel combined with DIP-STR and SNP-STR markers may be a possible way to achieve better discrimination power.

Abstract
Allele frequencies and forensic parameters for 17 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci were investigated from 1542 individuals of Va ethnic minority in Yunnan Province in the southwest of China. Also, genetic distances between Va and 13 published populations were compared, and a neighbor-joining (NJ) phylogenetic tree was developed and visualized using averaged F ST matrix. Results demonstrate that these loci are highly polymorphic in the Va population and can be applied in forensic, population genetic, and linguistic fields.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The years since 2005 have seen major changes in cancer treatment and significant increases in the number of anticancer drugs available. However, there are relatively few published data to reflect how those changes are affecting the activity and workload of oncology services. To explore the effects of those changes, we reviewed the population-based cancer treatment activity on Vancouver Island for the period 2010-2015. METHODS Information about new patient referrals, radiation courses, new chemotherapy cycles commenced, total intravenous (IV) chemotherapy treatment visits, and pharmacy activity for oral anticancer drug prescriptions was obtained from BC Cancer Agency databases. RESULTS During the 5-year study period, the Vancouver Island population increased by 2.8% and the number of new referrals to the BC Cancer Agency increased by 17.7%. The overall number of radiation courses increased by 6.1%. In contrast, IV chemotherapy activity increased by 52.1% for new courses commenced and by 62% for total IV chemotherapy attendances. Oral anticancer drug prescriptions rose by 22.9% during the 5-year period. CONCLUSIONS Our study documents substantial recent increases in cancer therapy activity in terms of patient referrals and particularly IV chemotherapy and oral anticancer therapy. The data reported here could be of value in planning for future care provision.
