Migration and the life course

The importance of migration as a biographic event within the life course is asserted, using data for the former Federal Republic of Germany. "The migration process can be described by...various factors like the frequency of moves, the age when changing residence, the distance, the direction, [and] the motives.... Each change of residence has both a retrospective and prospective aspect. Additionally, changes in other biographic processes like marriage or births of children in the familial career or changes in the occupational career directly influence migration decisions. But there are also effects in the opposite direction: the migration process can influence the further development of other biographic processes. Support exchange patterns of the elderly in the Republic of Korea

The authors examine support of the elderly in South Korea, with a focus on the future implications of demographic aging. "Owing to socio-economic development in the Republic of Korea and the country's success in reducing mortality and fertility, the proportion and number of elderly in the population is rapidly rising. Co-residence with adult children is the most important pattern of support for the elderly. But the elderly also contribute support in the form of financial and material assistance as well as services such as care of grandchildren. The article concludes that, because of the rapid increase in the absolute size of the elderly population, government services need to be expanded to assist in providing care for the elderly."

The paradox of nineteenth-century population growth in Southeast Asia: evidence from Java and the Philippines

The paradox can be expressed simply: the population of nineteenth-century Southeast Asia apparently grew much more rapidly than precedent or demographic theory would have led us to expect. In the two areas for which we have the most and best data — Dutch Java and the Spanish Philippines — almost all the statistical evidence points to rates of natural increase reaching 1 per cent a year by the early nineteenth century and rising well above that level for most of the rest of the century. Though the evidence is much less clear for other countries in the region, it is generally compatible with a hypothesis of comparably rapid growth. In Siam, for example, the trend line passing through most nineteenth-century estimates reaches 1.3 per cent by the 1860s, 3 per cent by the 1890s.
