Comparison of falls and risk factors among older adults in urban villages, urban and rural areas of Shantou, China

Objective

To investigate and compare the differences between the incidence of falls, balance and living environment among older persons in urban villages and other types of residential areas.

Methods

We surveyed 580 older adults living in different types of residential areas in Shantou, China, surveying basic information, fall incidence, balance ability testing of older persons, home environment safety assessment.

Results

The incidence of falls among older people in urban villages (19.54 %) was between urban areas(26.63 %) and rural areas(16.91 %). The influencing factors of falls in different residential types were different. Near-fall, abnormal bowel movement, and impaired balance ability were the risk factors of falls among older persons in urban villages. Divorce/single, fair and poor hearing loss and near-fall were the risk factors of falls in urban older adults. Frailty and impaired balance ability were the risk factors of falls in rural older people.

Conclusions

Risk factors for falls in older people vary according to the characteristics of their living areas and relevant interventions should be targeted according to the characteristics of falls occurring in different residential areas.

Assessment of noise levels and induced annoyance in nearby residential areas of an airport region in Oman

There is adequate evidence from epidemiological studies showing an association between noise exposures and incidence of cardiovascular diseases and cognitive impairment among exposed populations. This study aimed to investigate noise exposure levels in an airport region and their effects on the nearby two neighborhood communities (i.e., Al Seeb and Bawshar). To achieve this, noise levels were measured across 15 different points within the communities for more than 3 weeks at a median distance of 3.5 km from the airport runways using a sound level analyzer. In addition, we conducted an online social survey in a random sampling of a total of 913 residents who were living closer to the airport. A combination of a 5-point scale and 3-point Likert scale was used to assess the resident population's noise annoyance and the potential health impacts. The results revealed that the majority of the measured points have noise levels (55.71-65.24 L_Aeq dBA) exceeding both Oman and WHO critical limits. There was a general decrease in noise levels at points further away from the runways; thus, at points 2.5, 4.8, and 8.8 km, sound pressure levels were found to be 63.08, 57.41, and 52.31 dBA, respectively. However, steady noise levels were observed throughout most of the daily (24 h) measurements indicating continual exposures. Overall, 44.6% of residents reported noise annoyance level as very high, with Al Seeb inhabitants (46%) eliciting a greater percentage of annoyance levels compared to Bawshar (5%) due to their closer proximity to the airport. Also, the noise was significantly (p ˂ 0.001) associated with sleep disturbance, insomnia, irritation, and frightening. The majority of the residents complained of an increase in insomnia (41.5%), stress (34.3%), headache (47.3%), and cardiovascular diseases (16.2%). With the question of reducing noise exposures, about 41% of the respondents have plans of relocating to distant areas with low noise levels.

Impacts of urbanization and landscape patterns on the earthworm communities in residential areas in Beijing

Earthworms play an important role in soil processes and functions. However, few studies have focused on their community patterns in perturbed systems, especially in an urban environment with a high turnover rate of land cover. In this study, we collected and identified the earthworms in the residential areas in metropolitan Beijing. We further investigated the effects of urban soil properties, urbanization and landscape patterns on the earthworm communities. The results showed that both the abundance and biomass of earthworms in residential areas in metropolitan was relatively low. The abundance of earthworms was negatively correlated with soil organic carbon (SOC) in this study. Soil moisture and pH could be considered as the most important edaphic variables that affected earthworm communities. The construction age of residential areas significantly influenced the earthworm abundance. Moreover, the earthworm community composition responded differently to urban landscape features at different scales. The percentage of impervious and green space surface, the amount of landscape cover types, patch density and landscape fragment significantly affected the earthworm assemblages. Our result discovered that the edaphic properties, urbanization as well as landscape patterns might be the potential factors that influenced the earthworm community patterns.

Mass balance-based regression modeling of PAHs accumulation in urban soils, role of urban development

We investigated the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contents in 68 soils samples collected at housing developments that represent different length of development periods across Beijing. Based on the data, we derived a mass balanced mathematical model to simulate the dynamics of PAH accumulations in urban soils as affected by the urban developments. The key parameters were estimated by fitting the modified mass balance model to the data of PAH concentrations vs. building age of the sampling green area. The total PAH concentrations would increase from the baseline of 267 ng g(-1) to 3631 ng g(-1) during the period of 1978-2048. It showed that the dynamic changes in the rates of accumulations of light and heavy PAH species were related to the shifting of sources of fuels, combustion efficiencies, and amounts of energy consumed during the course of development.

Soundscape in the sustainable living environment: A cross-cultural comparison between the UK and Taiwan

This study examines the effects of cultural factors on the evaluation of acoustic quality of residential areas, within the context of general environmental conditions. A comparative study was carried out between the UK and Taiwan, through questionnaire surveys at three stages, namely in selected residential areas, with respondents in their place of work/study, and using a web-based survey, respectively. This study reveals the importance of considering cultural factors, as well as their living experiences. This is reflected by the significant differences between the two cultures in a number of aspects, including choosing and evaluating living environment, noise noticeability, annoyance and sleep disturbance, activities, and sound preference. It is interesting to note the factor 'quiet' is an important consideration compared to other factors, in both the UK and Taiwan.
