Aqueous Coordination-Insertion Copolymerization for Producing High Molecular Weight Polar Polyolefins

Hydrocarbons, when used as the medium for transition metal catalyzed organic reactions and olefin (co-)polymerization, are ubiquitous. Environmentally friendly water is highly attractive and long-sought, but is greatly challenging as coordination-insertion copolymerization reaction medium of olefin and polar monomers. Unfavorable interactions from both water and polar monomer usually lead to either catalyst deactivation or the formation of low-molecular-weight polymers. Herein, we develop well-behaved neutral phosphinophenolato nickel catalysts, which enable aqueous copolymerization of ethylene and diverse polar monomers to produce significantly high-molecular-weight linear polar polyolefins (219-549 kDa, 0.13-1.29 mol %) in a single-component fashion under mild conditions for the first time. These copolymerization reactions occur better in water than in hydrocarbons such as toluene. The dual characteristics of high molecular weight and the incorporation of a small amount of functional group result in improved surface properties while retain the desirable intrinsic properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

Unveiling Non-Covalent Interactions in Novel Cooperative Photoredox Systems for Efficient Alkene Oxidation in Water

A new cooperative photoredox catalytic system, [RuII(trpy)(bpy)(H2O)][3,3'-Co(8,9,12-Cl3-1,2-C2B9H8)2]2, 5, has been synthesized and fully characterized for the first time. In this system, the photoredox catalyst [3,3'-Co(8,9,12-Cl3-1,2-C2B9H8)2]-[Cl6-1]-, a metallacarborane, and the oxidation catalyst [RuII(trpy)(bpy)(H2O)]2+, 2 are linked by non-covalent interactions. This compound, along with the one previously synthesized by us, [RuII(trpy)(bpy)(H2O)][(3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2]2, 4, are the only examples of cooperative molecular photocatalysts in which the catalyst and photosensitizer are not linked by covalent bonds. Both cooperative systems have proven to be efficient photocatalysts for the oxidation of alkenes in water through Proton Coupled Electron Transfer processes (PCETs). Using 0.05 mol% of catalyst 4, total conversion values were achieved after 15 min with moderate selectivity for the corresponding epoxides, which decreases with reaction time, along with the TON values. However, with 0.005 mol% of catalyst, the conversion values are lower, but the selectivity and TON values are higher. This occurs simultaneously with an increase in the amount of the corresponding diol for most of the substrates studied. Photocatalyst 4 acts as a photocatalyst in both the epoxidation of alkenes and their hydroxylation in aqueous medium. The hybrid system 5 shows generally higher conversion values at low loads compared to those obtained with 4 for most of the substrates studied. However, the selectivity values for the corresponding epoxides are lower even after 15 min of reaction. This is likely due to the enhanced oxidizing capacity of CoIV in catalyst 5, resulting from the presence of more electron-withdrawing substituents on the metallacarborane platform.

Enhancing Photoredox Catalysis in Aqueous Environments: Ruthenium Aqua Complex Derivatization of Graphene Oxide and Graphite Rods for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Hybrid Catalysts

A ruthenium aqua photoredox catalyst has been successfully heterogeneneized on graphene oxide (GO@trans-fac-3) and graphite rods (GR@trans-fac-3) for the first time and have proven to be sustainable and easily reusable systems for the photooxidation of alcohols in water, in mild and green conditions. We report here the synthesis and total characterization of two Ru(II)-polypyridyl complexes, the chlorido trans-fac-[RuCl(bpea-pyrene)(bpy)](PF6) (trans-fac-2) and the aqua trans-fac-[Ru(bpea-pyrene)(bpy)OH2](PF6)2 (trans-fac-3), both containing the N-tridentate, 1-[bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)amino]methylpyrene (bpea-pyrene), and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligands. In both complexes, only a single isomer, the trans-fac, has been detected in solution and in the solid state. The aqua complex trans-fac-3 displays bielectronic redox processes in water, assigned to the Ru(IV/II) couple. The trans-fac-3 complex has been heterogenized on different types of supports, (i) on graphene oxide (GO) through π-stacking interactions between the pyrene group of the bpea-pyrene ligand and the GO and (ii) both on glassy carbon electrodes (GC) and on graphite rods (GR) through oxidative electropolymerization of the pyrene group, which yield stable heterogeneous photoredox catalysts. GO@trans-fac-3- and GR/poly trans-fac-3-modified electrodes were fully characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. Trans-fac-3 and GO@trans-fac-3 photocatalysts (without a photosensitizer) showed good catalytic efficiency in the photooxidation of alcohols in water under mild conditions and using visible light. Both photocatalysts display high selectivity values (>99%) even for primary alcohols in accordance with the presence of two-electron transfer processes (2e-/2H+). GO@trans-fac-3 keeps intact its homogeneous catalytic properties but shows an enhancement in yields. GO@trans-fac-3 can be easily recycled by filtration and reused for up to five runs without any significant loss of catalytic activity. Graphite rods (GR@trans-fac-3) were also evaluated as heterogeneous photoredox catalysts showing high turnover numbers (TON) and selectivity values.

Computational Modeling of Gold Nanoparticle Interacting with Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest in Water

We derived a theory of biomolecule binding to the surface of Aun clusters and of the Au plane based on the hard soft acid base (HSAB) principle and the free electron metallic surface model. With the use of quantum mechanical calculations, the chemical potential (μ) and the chemical hardness (η) of the biomolecules are estimated. The effect of the gold is introduced via the empirical value of the gold chemical potential (-5.77 eV) as well as by using the expression (modified here) for the chemical hardness (η). The effect of an aqueous environment is introduced by means of the ligand molecular geometry influenced by the PCM field. This theory allows for a fast and low-cost estimation of binding biomolecules to the AuNPs surface. The predicted binding of thiolated genistein and abiraterone to the gold surface is about 20 kcal/mol. The model of the exchange reaction between these biomolecules and citrates on the Au surface corresponds well with the experimental observations for thiolated abiraterone. Moreover, using a model of the place exchange of linear mercaptohydrocarbons on 12-mercaptododecane acid methyl ester bound to the Au surface, the present results reflect the known relation between exchange energy and the size of the reagents.

Rapid Detection of Cd2+ Ions in the Aqueous Medium Using a Highly Sensitive and Selective Turn-On Fluorescent Chemosensor

Herein, a novel optical chemosensor, (CM1 = 2, 6-di((E)-benzylidene)-4-methylcyclohexan-1-one), was designed/synthesized and characterized by ¹H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The experimental observations indicated that CM1 is an efficient and selective chemosensor towards Cd²⁺, even in the presence of other metal ions, such as Mn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Co^2+, Ce³⁺, K⁺, Hg²⁺,^, and Zn²⁺ in the aqueous medium. The newly synthesized chemosensor, CM1, showed a significant change in the fluorescence emission spectrum upon coordination with Cd²⁺. The formation of the Cd²⁺ complex with CM1 was confirmed from the fluorometric response. The 1:2 combination of Cd²⁺ with CM1 was found optimum for the desired optical properties, which was confirmed through fluorescent titration, Job's plot, and DFT calculation. Moreover, CM1 showed high sensitivity towards Cd²⁺ with a very low detection limit (19.25 nM). Additionally, the CM1 was recovered and recycled by the addition of EDTA solution that combines with Cd²⁺ ion and, hence, frees up the chemosensor.

Biosorbent Based on Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Tricarboxi-Cellulose Designed to Retain Organic Dyes from Aqueous Media

Methylene Blue, a cationic dye, was retained from aqueous solutions using a novel biosorbent made of poly(vinyl alcohol) reticulated with tricarboxi-cellulose produced via TEMPO oxidation (OxC25). The study of the Methylene Blue biosorption process was performed with an emphasis on operational parameters that may have an impact on it (such as biosorbent concentration, pH of the aqueous media, and temperature). The current study focused on three areas: (i) the physic-chemical characterization of the biosorbent (scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)); (ii) biosorption data modeling to determine the quantitative characteristic parameters employing three equilibrium isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich-DR); and (iii) the study of temperature influence. The results of the study showed that the Langmuir model provided a good fit for the experimental data of biosorption, realizing a maximum capacity of 806.45 mg/g at 20 °C. The free energy of biosorption (E) evaluated by the DR equation was in the range of 6.48-10.86 KJ/mol. The values of the thermodynamic parameters indicated an endothermic process because the free Gibbs energy ranged from -9.286 KJ/mol to -2.208 KJ/mol and the enthalpy was approximately -71.686 KJ/mol. The results obtained encourage and motivate the further study of this biosorption process by focusing on its kinetic aspects, establishing the biosorption's controlled steps, identifying the mechanism responsible for the retention of textile dyes presented in moderate concentration in aqueous media, and studying the biosorption process in a dynamic regime with a view to applying it to real systems.

Natural Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots Obtained from Hydrothermal Carbonization of Chebulic Myrobalan and Their Sensing Ability toward Heavy Metal Ions

Chebulic Myrobalan is the main ingredient in the Ayurvedic formulation Triphala, which is used for kidney and liver dysfunctions. Herein, natural nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NN-CDs) were prepared from the hydrothermal carbonization of Chebulic Myrobalan and were demonstrated to sense heavy metal ions in an aqueous medium. Briefly, the NN-CDs were developed from Chebulic Myrobalan by a single-step hydrothermal carbonization approach under a mild temperature (200 °C) without any capping and passivation agents. They were then thoroughly characterized to confirm their structural and optical properties. The resulting NN-CDs had small particles (average diameter: 2.5 ± 0.5 nm) with a narrow size distribution (1-4 nm) and a relatable degree of graphitization. They possessed bright and durable fluorescence with excitation-dependent emission behaviors. Further, the as-synthesized NN-CDs were a good fluorometric sensor for the detection of heavy metal ions in an aqueous medium. The NN-CDs showed sensitive and selective sensing platforms for Fe³⁺ ions; the detection limit was calculated to be 0.86 μM in the dynamic range of 5-25 μM of the ferric (Fe³⁺) ion concentration. Moreover, these NN-CDs could expand their application as a potential candidate for biomedical applications and offer a new method of hydrothermally carbonizing waste biomass.

Coffee Beverage: A New Strategy for the Synthesis of Polymethacrylates via ATRP

Coffee, the most popular beverage in the 21st century society, was tested as a reaction environment for activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) without an additional reducing agent. Two blends were selected: pure Arabica beans and a proportional blend of Arabica and Robusta beans. The use of the solution received from the mixture with Robusta obtained a high molecular weight polymer product in a short time while maintaining a controlled structure of the synthesized product. Various monomers with hydrophilic characteristics, i.e., 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA₅₀₀), and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), were polymerized. The proposed concept was carried out at different concentrations of coffee grounds, followed by the determination of the molar concentration of caffeine in applied beverages using DPV and HPLC techniques.

Ag-TiO2 Nanoparticles-Catalyzed Three-Component Synthesis of 12-Aryl-8,9,10,12-Tetrahydrobenzo[a]-Xanthen-11-Ones in Aqueous Medium

BACKGROUND

Ag-TiO₂ nanoparticles catalyzed synthesis of 12-aryl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]-xanthen-11-ones have been enhanced via a three-component one-pot reaction betweenβ-naphthol, several aldehydes and dimedone in H₂O at room temperature. Xanthenes are essential intermediates in chemistry owing to their vast difference in biological activity.

METHODS

This process offered significant advantages containing appropriate cost efficiency, low amount of the catalyst, application of low-cost available Ag-TiO₂ nanoparticles catalyst, purification of the product by non-chromatographic method, easy process, good atom economy, simple isolation and reusability of nanocatalyst.

RESULTS

Ag-TiO₂ nanoparticles catalyst shows easy access to Xanthenes with appropriate yields in short reaction time and purity. This nanoparticles catalyst was recycled and recovered by easy filtration and was reused up to five times with only an unimportant loss in its catalytic efficacy.

CONCLUSION

This method achieves to have a numerous scope relating to the difference in the aldehydes. Correspondingly, the attractive of this research was that H₂O was the only by-products.

The Impact of Redox, Hydrolysis and Dehydration Chemistry on the Structural and Magnetic Properties of Magnetoferritin Prepared in Variable Thermal Conditions

Ferritin, a spherically shaped protein complex, is responsible for iron storage in bacteria, plants, animals, and humans. Various ferritin iron core compositions in organisms are associated with specific living requirements, health state, and different biochemical roles of ferritin isomers. Magnetoferritin, a synthetic ferritin derivative, serves as an artificial model system of unusual iron phase structures found in humans. We present the results of a complex structural study of magnetoferritins prepared by controlled in vitro synthesis. Using various complementary methods, it was observed that manipulation of the synthesis technology can improve the physicochemical parameters of the system, which is useful in applications. Thus, a higher synthesis temperature leads to an increase in magnetization due to the formation of the magnetite phase. An increase in the iron loading factor has a more pronounced impact on the protein shell structure in comparison with the pH of the aqueous medium. On the other hand, a higher loading factor at physiological temperature enhances the formation of an amorphous phase instead of magnetite crystallization. It was confirmed that the iron-overloading effect alone (observed during pathological events) cannot contribute to the formation of magnetite.

Arousing Electrochemiluminescence Out of Non-Electroluminescent Monomers within Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with stable long-range ordered arrangements are promising materials for organic optoelectronics. However, their electrochemiluminescence (ECL) from non-ECL active monomers has not been realized. Here, we report a design strategy for ECL-emitting COF family. The donors and acceptors co-crystallized and stacked into the highly aligned array of olefin-linked COFs, so that electrons can be transported freely. By this means, a tunable ECL is activated from non-ECL molecules with the maximum efficiency of 32.1% in water with the dissolved oxygen as an inner coreactant, and no additional noxious co-reactant is needed any more. Quantum chemistry calculations further demonstrate that this design reduces the COFs' band gaps and the overlap of electrons and holes in the excited state for better photoelectric properties and stronger ECL signals. This work exploits a basis to envisage the broad application potential of ECL-COFs for various biosensors and light-emitting display.

Synthesis of New 1H-1,2,3-Triazole Analogs in Aqueous Medium via "Click" Chemistry: A Novel Class of Potential Carbonic Anhydrase-II Inhibitors

A series of novel 1H-1,2,3-triazole analogs (9a–j) were synthesized via “Click” chemistry and Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction in aqueous medium. The compounds were evaluated for their carbonic anhydrase-II enzyme inhibitory activity in vitro. The synthesis of triazole 7a was accomplished using (S)-(-) ethyl lactate as a starting material. This compound (7a) underwent Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction with different arylboronic acids in aqueous medium to afford the target molecules, 9a–j in good yields. All newly synthesized compounds were characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FT-IR, HRMS, and where applicable ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy (9b, 9e, 9h, and 9j). The new compounds have shown moderate inhibition potential against carbonic anhydrase-II enzyme. A preliminary structure-activity relationship suggested that the presence of polar group at the 1H-1,2,3-triazole substituted phenyl ring in these derivatives (9a–j) has contributed to the overall activity of these compounds. Furthermore, via molecular docking, it was deduced that the compounds exhibit inhibitory potential through direct binding with the active site residues of carbonic anhydrase-II enzyme. This study has unraveled a new series of triazole derivatives as good inhibitors against carbonic anhydrase-II.

Self-Assembly of Photoresponsive Molecular Amphiphiles in Aqueous Media

Amphiphilic molecules, comprising hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties and the intrinsic propensity to self-assemble in aqueous environment, sustain a fascinating spectrum of structures and functions ranging from biological membranes to ordinary soap. Facing the challenge to design responsive, adaptive, and out-of-equilibrium systems in water, the incorporation of photoresponsive motifs in amphiphilic molecular structures offers ample opportunity to design supramolecular systems that enables functional responses in water in a non-invasive way using light. Here, we discuss the design of photoresponsive molecular amphiphiles, their self-assembled structures in aqueous media and at air-water interfaces, and various approaches to arrive at adaptive and dynamic functions in isotropic and anisotropic systems, including motion at the air-water interface, foam formation, reversible nanoscale assembly, and artificial muscle function. Controlling the delicate interplay of structural design, self-assembling conditions and external stimuli, these responsive amphiphiles open several avenues towards application such as soft adaptive materials, controlled delivery or soft actuators, bridging a gap between artificial and natural dynamic systems.

A Facile and Catalyst-Free Microwave-Promoted Multicomponent Reaction for the Synthesis of Functionalised 1,4-Dihydropyridines With Superb Selectivity and Yields

We report a highly efficient green protocol for developing a novel library of 1,2,4-triazole-tagged 1,4-dihydropyridine analogs through the one-pot process from the four-component fusion of the 1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-amine with different chosen aldehydes, diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, and active methylene compounds in a water medium under microwave irradiation and catalyst-free conditions. Excellent yields (94-97%) of the target products were achieved with high selectivity with a short reaction time (<12 min) at room temperature. The structures of the synthesized pyrimidine analogs were established by NMR and HRMS spectroscopic analysis. Simple workup, impressive yields, no column chromatography, green solvent, rapid reaction, and excellent functional group tolerance are the benefits of this protocol.

Vitamin B12-Immobilized Graphene Oxide for Efficient Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reaction

A naturally occurring water-soluble cobalt-complex cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) has been identified as a new and efficient electrocatalyst for the CO₂ -to-CO reduction reaction in aqueous solution. Heterogeneous B12-electrocatalysts prepared by a simple electrochemical immobilization technique on graphene-oxide (GO)-modified glassy carbon and carbon paper (CP) electrodes, without any non-degradable polymer-binders, showed a highly stable and well-defined surface-confined redox peak at E'=-0.138 V vs. RHE with a surface-excess value, Γ_B12 =4.28 nmol cm^-2 . This new electrocatalyst exhibits 93 % Faradaic efficiency for CO₂ -to-CO conversion at an electrolysis potential, -0.882 V vs. RHE (an optimal condition) with a high current density, 29.4 mA cm^-2 and turn-over-frequency value, 5.2 s^-1 , without any surface-fouling problem, in 0.5 m KHCO₃ . In further, it follows an eco-friendly, sustainable and water-based approach with the involvement of biodegradable and non-toxic chemicals/materials like B12, GO and CP.

Thiol-Ene Click Synthesis of Phenylboronic Acid-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework for Selective Catechol Removal from Aqueous Medium

We report a thiol-ene click strategy for the preparation of a novel phenylboronic acid-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) for selective removal of catechol in aqueous solution. Vinyl-functionalized 2,5-diallyloxyterephthalaldehyde (Da-V) was prepared as a building ligand. Da-V was then condensed with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (Tab) to give a vinyl-functionalized COF DhaTab-V. Subsequently, 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) was covalently linked on DhaTab-V via thiol-ene click reaction to give phenylboronic acid-functionalized COF DhaTab-PBA. The adsorption isotherms, energetics and kinetics, and reusability of DhaTab-PBA for the adsorption and removal of catechol from aqueous solution were investigated in detail. This phenylboronic acid-functionalized COF is promising as sorbent for selective removal of catechol from aqueous medium with large adsorption capacity and good reusability.

Self-assembly behaviors of perylene- and naphthalene-crown macrocycle conjugates in aqueous medium

The synthesis of conjugates of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) modified with two benzo-21-crown-7 ethers (B21C7) are herein described. Their self-assembly behavior in various solvents was investigated particularly in aqueous medium, due to the recently discovered hydrophilic properties of B21C7 crown macrocycle. An unexpected fluorescence quenching phenomenon was observed in the PDI-B21C7 macrocycle conjugate in chloroform. The detailed UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these PDI/NDI derivatives in different solvents as well as their morphologies were investigated.

Porphyrinic Probe for Fluorescence "Turn-On" Monitoring of Cu+ in Aqueous Buffer and Mitochondria

A zinc(II) porphyrin derivative (ZPSN) was designed and synthesized, and this probe exhibited rapid, selective and reversible binding to Cu⁺ for fluorescence monitoring in pure aqueous buffer. The detection mechanism is based on Cu⁺-activated disruption of axial coordination between the pyridyl ligand and the zinc center, which changes the molecular geometry and inhibits intramolecular electron transfer (ET), leading to fluorescence enhancement of the probe. The proposed sensing mechanism was supported by UV-vis spectroscopy/fluorescence spectral titration, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and time-resolved fluorescence decay studies. The dissociation constant was calculated to be 6.53 × 10^-11 M. CLSM analysis strongly suggested that ZPSN could penetrate live cells and successfully visualize Cu⁺ in mitochondria. This strategy may establish a design and offer a potential building block for construction of other metal sensors based on a similar mechanism.

Green Protocols in Heterocycle Syntheses via 1,3-Dipolar Cycloadditions

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of green protocols for the organic synthesis of heterocycles via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. Particular attention has been devoted to the use of green solvents; reactions performed in ionic liquids, fluorinated solvents and water have been included. Also explored are several protocols that make use of catalyst-free reaction conditions, the use of microwave irradiation and activation by light exposure. Improvements over commonly used organic solvents will be underlined in order to highlight environmental protection aspects and enhancements in regio- and stereo-selectivity.

A combination of absorption and enzymatic biodegradation: phenol elimination from aqueous and organic phase

Peroxidase from Brassica rapa was immobilized as cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) and used to treat air containing phenol as a model molecule of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Prior to an enzymatic treatment, phenol was absorbed into an aqueous or organic phase (silicone oil) to reach concentrations ranging from 20 to 160 mg/L. The process was carried out by introducing a desired weighing of BRP-CLEAs into preparations and reaction was started by injecting H₂O₂ solution to the medium. Optimization of the reaction conditions in the organic solvent revealed an optimal contact time of 60 min, 60 mg/L of phenol concentration and 3 mM H₂O₂, leading to a maximum removal yield of 70% for 3.4 UI/mL of BRP-CLEAs. These results were compared to those obtained in an aqueous medium that showed 90% of degradation yield after 40 min in the following conditions, 90 mg/L of initial phenol amount, 2 mM of H₂O₂ and 2.5 UI/mL of BRP-CLEAs. Parameters of the Michaelis-Menten model, Km and Vmax, were also determined for the reaction in both phases. Phenol removal by BRP-CLEAs in silicone oil succeeded with 70% of conversion yield. It is promising regarding the transposition of such enzymatic process to hydrophobic VOCs.

1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reactions for the Synthesis of Novel Oxindole Derivatives and Their Cytotoxic Properties

The multicomponent reaction between isatin, amino acid, but-2-ynedioates, and phenacyl bromide has been developed using microwave irradiation under catalyst and base-free conditions in aqueous medium. This synthetic protocol is useful for the synthesis of various functionalized spirooxindole derivatives. This MCR exhibits a broad substrate scope with excellent yields and shorter reaction time. Additionally the synthesized spirooxindole derivatives were evaluated for their anticancer activity against three human cancer cell lines: MCF-7 (breast), A549 (lung), and HeLa cervical. Most of the compounds showed moderate to potent cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines.

Synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial properties of copper nanoparticles

Copper nanoparticle synthesis has been gaining attention due to its availability. However, factors such as agglomeration and rapid oxidation have made it a difficult research area. In the present work, pure copper nanoparticles were prepared in the presence of a chitosan stabilizer through chemical means. The purity of the nanoparticles was authenticated using different characterization techniques, including ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The antibacterial as well as antifungal activity of the nanoparticles were investigated using several microorganisms of interest, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella choleraesuis, and Candida albicans. The effect of a chitosan medium on growth of the microorganism was studied, and this was found to influence growth rate. The size of the copper nanoparticles obtained was in the range of 2–350 nm, depending on the concentration of the chitosan stabilizer.
