Single-Bubble Sonoluminescence of Colloidal Suspensions as a New Technique for Sonoluminescent Spectroscopic Analysis

This is a brief research review on the new method of development for element luminescence determination, namely, sonoluminescent spectroscopy. The advantages and disadvantages of the technique of multibubble sonoluminescence (MBSL) in solutions used to apply this method are discussed. It has been shown that the use of a new technique moving single-bubble sonoluminescence (m-SBSL) in colloidal suspensions of nanoparticles (<50 nm) containing the elements analyzed seems preferable for this purpose. This makes it possible to determine elements not only at lower concentrations than when using MBSL in solutions but also to find elements that are unavailable for determination through previous techniques. Thus, this new technique expands the range of elements that can be determined using sonoluminescent spectroscopy. The article provides a detailed description of the standard procedure for the preparation and recording of m-SBSL in colloidal suspensions, as well as examples of characteristic spectra of some elements obtained and recorded for the first time according to this new technique (Al, K, Mn, Cd, Pt, Ni, and Ti), including those not previously found using the MBSL in solutions (Al, Cd, Pt, Ni, and Ti). An example of the analytical line at 396 nm in the Al spectrum obtained through this new technique on the basis of an AlCl₃ initial aqueous solution, the region of the linear dependence of the intensity on the AlCl₃ concentration was registered, and the lower limit of the spectroscopic determination of the Al content in this solution was estimated as 8.3·10^-3 M. Using the analysis of the obtained Cd spectrum as an example, we carried out a spectroscopic measurement of the electronic temperature achieved at m-SBSL in bubble plasma at the moment of greatest compression of a bubble with light emission during its acoustic oscillations in dodecane, T_e = 7900 ± 500 K.

Dynamical effective field model for interacting ferrofluids: II. The proper relaxation time and effects of dynamic correlations

The recently proposed dynamical effective field model (DEFM) is quantitatively accurate for ferrofluid dynamics. It is derived in paper I within the framework of dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) along with a phenomenological description of nonadiabatic effects. However, it remains to clarify how the characteristic rotational relaxation time of a dressed particle, denoted byτ_r, is quantitatively related to that of a bare particle, denoted byτr0. By building macro-micro connections via two different routes, I reveal that under some gentle assumptionsτ_rcan be identified with the mean time characterizing long-time rotational self-diffusion. I further introduce two simple but useful integrated correlation factors, describing the effects of quasi-static (adiabatic) and dynamic (nonadiabatic) inter-particle correlations, respectively. In terms of both the dynamic magnetic susceptibility is expressed in an illuminating and elegant form. Remarkably, it shows that the macro-micro connection is established via two successive steps: a dynamical coarse-graining with nonadiabatic effects accounted for by the dynamic factor, followed by equilibrium ensemble averaging captured by the static factor. By analyzing data from Brownian dynamics simulations on monodisperse interacting ferrofluids, I findτr/τr0is, somehow unexpectedly, insensitive to changes of particle volume fraction. A physical picture is proposed to explain it. Furthermore, an empirical formula is proposed to characterize the dependence ofτr/τr0on dipole-dipole interaction strength. The DEFM supplemented with this formula leads to parameter-free predictions in good agreement with results from Brownian dynamics simulations. The theoretical developments presented in this paper may have important consequences to studies of ferrofluid dynamics in particular and other systems modeled by DDFTs in general.

From Colloidal Dispersions of Zeolite Monolayers to Effective Solid Catalysts in Transformations of Bulky Organic Molecules: Role of Freeze-Drying and Dialysis

We investigated the properties and catalytic activity of zeolites with MWW topology obtained by unprecedented liquid exfoliation of the MCM-56 zeolite into solutions of monolayers and isolation/reassembly of the dispersed layers by various methods, with optional purification by dialysis or ammonium exchange. The layers were recovered by flocculation with alcohol or ammonium nitrate and freeze-drying. Flocculation alone, even with ammonium nitrate, did not ensure removal of residual sodium cations resulting in catalysts with low activity. Dialysis of the solutions with dispersed monolayers proved to be efficient in removing sodium cations and preserving microporosity. The monolayers were also isolated as solids by freeze-drying. The highest BET area and pore volume obtained with the freeze-dried sample confirmed lyophilization efficiency in preserving layer structure. The applied test reaction, Friedel–Crafts alkylation of mesitylene, showed high benzyl alcohol conversion due to increased concentration of accessible acid centers caused by the presence of secondary mesoporosity. The applied treatments did not change the acid strength of the external acid sites, which are the most important ones for converting bulky organic molecules. Zeolite acidity was not degraded in the course of exfoliation into monolayers, showing the potential of such colloid dispersions for the formation of active catalysts.

Study of network composition in interpenetrating polymer networks of poly(N isopropylacrylamide) microgels: The role of poly(acrylic acid)

HYPOTHESIS

The peculiar swelling behaviour of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)⁴-based responsive microgels provides the possibility to tune both softness and volume fraction with temperature, making these systems of great interest for technological applications and theoretical implications. Their intriguing phase diagram can be even more complex if poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)⁵ is interpenetrated within PNIPAM network to form Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN)⁶ microgels that exhibit an additional pH-sensitivity. The effect of the PAAc/PNIPAM polymeric ratio on both swelling capability and dynamics is still matter of investigation.

EXPERIMENTS

Here we investigate the role of PAAc in the behaviour of IPN microgels across the volume phase transition through dynamic light scattering (DLS),⁷ transmission electron microscopy (TEM)⁸ and electrophoretic measurements as a function of microgel concentration and pH.

FINDINGS

Our results highlight that aggregation is favored at increasing weight concentration, PAAc content and pH and that a crossover PAAc content C_PAAc^∗9 exists above which the ionic charges on the microgel become relevant. Moreover we show that the softness of IPN microgels can be tuned ad hoc by changing the PAAc/PNIPAM ratio. These findings provide new insights into the possibility to control experimentally aggregation properties, charge and softness of IPN microgels by varying PAAc content.

3D Printing of Customized Li-Ion Batteries with Thick Electrodes

The growing demand for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with higher capacity in customized geometries underscores the need for new battery materials, architectures, and assembly strategies. Here, the design, fabrication, and electrochemical performance of fully 3D printed LIBs composed of thick semisolid electrodes that exhibit high areal capacity are reported. Specifically, semisolid cathode and anode inks, as well as UV curable packaging and separator inks for direct writing of LIBs in arbitrary geometries are created. These fully 3D printed and packaged LIBs, which are encased between two glassy carbon current collectors, deliver an areal capacity of 4.45 mAh cm^-2 at a current density of 0.14 mA cm^-2 , which is equivalent to 17.3 Ah L^-1 . The ability to produce high-performance LIBs in customized form factors opens new avenues for integrating batteries directly within 3D printed objects.

Large-Area Self-Assembly of Silica Microspheres/Nanospheres by Temperature-Assisted Dip-Coating

This work reports a temperature-assisted dip-coating method for self-assembly of silica (SiO₂) microspheres/nanospheres (SPs) as monolayers over large areas (∼cm²). The area over which self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are formed can be controlled by tuning the suspension temperature (T_s), which allows precise control over the meniscus shape. Furthermore, the formation of periodic stripes of SAMs, with excellent dimensional control (stripe width and stripe-to-stripe spacing), is demonstrated using a suitable set of dip-coating parameters. These findings establish the role of T_s, and other parameters such as withdrawal speed (V_w), withdrawal angle (θ_w), and withdrawal step length (L_w). For T_s ranged between 25 and 80 °C, the morphological analysis of dip-coatings shows layered structures comprising of defective layers (25-60 °C), single layers (70 °C), and multilayers (>70 °C) owing to the variation of SP flux at the meniscus/substrate assembling interface. At T_s = 70 °C, there is an optimum V_w, approximately equal to the downshift speed of the meniscus (V_m = 1.3 μm/s), which allows the SAM formation over areas (2.25 cm²) roughly 10 times larger than reported in the literature using nanospheres. Finally, the large-area SAM is used to demonstrate the enhanced performance of antireflective coatings for photovoltaic cells and to create metal nanomesh for Si nanowire synthesis.

Biocompatible Colloidal Suspensions Based on Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Characterization and Toxicological Profile

The use of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in biomedicine has evolved intensely in the recent years due to the multiple applications of these nanomaterials, mainly in domains like cancer. The aim of the present study was: (i) to develop biocompatible colloidal suspensions based on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as future theranostic tools for skin pathology and (ii) to test their effects in vitro on human keratinocytes (HaCat cells) and in vivo by employing an animal model of acute dermal toxicity. Biocompatible colloidal suspensions were obtained by coating the magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles resulted during the solution combustion synthesis with a double layer of oleic acid, as innovative procedure in increasing bioavailability. The colloidal suspensions were characterized in terms of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The in vitro effects of these suspensions were tested by means of Alamar blue assay and the noxious effects at skin level were measured using non-invasive methods. The in vitro results indicated a lack of toxicity on normal human cells induced by the iron oxide nanoparticles colloidal suspensions after an exposure of 24 h to different concentrations (5, 10, and 25 μg·mL⁻¹). The dermal acute toxicity test showed that the topical applications of the colloidal suspensions on female and male SKH-1 hairless mice were not associated with significant changes in the quality of barrier skin function.

Tunable shear thickening in suspensions

Shear thickening, an increase of viscosity with shear rate, is a ubiquitous phenomenon in suspended materials that has implications for broad technological applications. Controlling this thickening behavior remains a major challenge and has led to empirical strategies ranging from altering the particle surfaces and shape to modifying the solvent properties. However, none of these methods allows for tuning of flow properties during shear itself. Here, we demonstrate that by strategic imposition of a high-frequency and low-amplitude shear perturbation orthogonal to the primary shearing flow, we can largely eradicate shear thickening. The orthogonal shear effectively becomes a regulator for controlling thickening in the suspension, allowing the viscosity to be reduced by up to 2 decades on demand. In a separate setup, we show that such effects can be induced by simply agitating the sample transversely to the primary shear direction. Overall, the ability of in situ manipulation of shear thickening paves a route toward creating materials whose mechanical properties can be controlled.

Discontinuous shear thickening in Brownian suspensions by dynamic simulation

Dynamic particle-scale numerical simulations are used to show that the shear thickening observed in dense colloidal, or Brownian, suspensions is of a similar nature to that observed in noncolloidal suspensions, i.e., a stress-induced transition from a flow of lubricated near-contacting particles to a flow of a frictionally contacting network of particles. Abrupt (or discontinuous) shear thickening is found to be a geometric rather than hydrodynamic phenomenon; it stems from the strong sensitivity of the jamming volume fraction to the nature of contact forces between suspended particles. The thickening obtained in a colloidal suspension of purely hard frictional spheres is qualitatively similar to experimental observations. However, the agreement cannot be made quantitative with only hydrodynamics, frictional contacts, and Brownian forces. Therefore, the role of a short-range repulsive potential mimicking the stabilization of actual suspensions on the thickening is studied. The effects of Brownian and repulsive forces on the onset stress can be combined in an additive manner. The simulations including Brownian and stabilizing forces show excellent agreement with experimental data for the viscosity η and the second normal stress difference N2.
