Review of Biosensors Based on Plasmonic-Enhanced Processes in the Metallic and Meta-Material-Supported Nanostructures

Surface plasmons, continuous and cumulative electron vibrations confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, play a pivotal role in aggregating optical fields and energies on nanostructures. This confinement exploits the intrinsic subwavelength nature of their spatial profile, significantly enhancing light-matter interactions. Metals, semiconductors, and 2D materials exhibit plasmonic resonances at diverse wavelengths, spanning from ultraviolet (UV) to far infrared, dictated by their unique properties and structures. Surface plasmons offer a platform for various light-matter interaction mechanisms, capitalizing on the orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the electromagnetic field within plasmonic structures. This enhancement has been substantiated through theoretical, computational, and experimental studies. In this comprehensive review, we delve into the plasmon-enhanced processes on metallic and metamaterial-based sensors, considering factors such as geometrical influences, resonating wavelengths, chemical properties, and computational methods. Our exploration extends to practical applications, encompassing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based planar waveguides, polymer-based biochip sensors, and LSPR-based fiber sensors. Ultimately, we aim to provide insights and guidelines for the development of next-generation, high-performance plasmonic technological devices.

Microfluidic Salinity Gradient-Induced All-Day Electricity Production in Solar Steam Generation

Synergistic generation of freshwater and electricity using solar light would be an ideal solution for global freshwater challenges and energy demands. Recently, interface solar steam generation has been considered one of the promising cost-effective alternatives for freshwater generation. Here, we have systematically maintained the salinity gradient within two-legged paper-based microfluidic channels to transport wastewater from the reservoir to the evaporator surface and generate electricity all-day-long. Flowing seawater (3.5 wt % NaCl) on one leg and tap water on the other of the water-conducting channels connected to a conical evaporator, we achieved an average open-circuit voltage (V_OC) of 150 mV and a short-circuit current of 6.5 μA across each channel along with a water evaporation efficiency of 88%. As the V_OC depends only on the ion concentration gradient within the channel in the direction perpendicular to the water flow, the electricity generation persists throughout the day and can be tuned by varying the salinity. Increasing the salt concentration of the seawater to 20 wt %, the V_OC increased to 250 mV in a single channel. In an evaporator connected with four such channels, we achieved a maximum output power density of 9.9 mW m^-2 in a series combination without sacrificing the evaporation rate. Furthermore, removing agglomerated salt from the evaporator surface, we harvested salt at a rate of 0.33 kg m^-2 h^-1. Therefore, our approach provides an alternative way of freshwater generation, salt harvesting, and all-day-long electricity production simultaneously.

Simultaneous Phenol Removal and Resource Recovery from Phenolic Wastewater by Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation

Efficient pollutants removal and simultaneous resource recovery from wastewater are of great significance for sustainable development. In this study, an electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) approach was developed to selectively and rapidly transform phenol to cyclohexanol, which possesses high economic value and low toxicity and can be easily recovered from the aqueous solution. A three-dimensional Ru/TiO₂ electrode with abundant active sites and massive microflow channels was prepared for efficient phenol transformation. A pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.135 min^-1 was observed for ECH of phenol (1 mM), which was 34-fold higher than that of traditional electrochemical oxidation (EO). Both direct electron transfer and indirect reduction by atomic hydrogen (H*) played pivotal roles in the hydrogenation of phenol ring. The ECH technique also showed excellent performance in a wide pH range of 3-11 and with a high concentration of phenol (10 mM). Moreover, the functional groups (e.g., chloro- and methyl-) on phenol showed little influence on the superiority of the ECH system. This work provides a novel and practical solution for remediation of phenolic wastewater as well as recovery of valuable organic compounds.

Effects of an Imposed Flow on Chemical Oscillations Generated by Enzymatic Reactions

Using analytical and computational models, we determine how externally imposed flows affect chemical oscillations that are generated by two enzyme-coated patches within a fluid-filled millimeter sized channel. The fluid flow affects the advective contribution to the flux of chemicals in the channel and, thereby, modifies the chemical reactions. Here, we show that changes in the flow velocity permit control over the chemical oscillations by broadening the range of parameters that give rise to oscillatory behavior, increasing the frequency of oscillations, or suppressing the oscillations all together. Notably, simply accelerating the flow along the channel transforms time-independent distributions of reagents into pronounced chemical oscillations. These findings can facilitate the development of artificial biochemical networks that act as chemical clocks.

Confined Bubble-Propelled Microswimmers in Capillaries: Wall Effect, Fuel Deprivation, and Exhaust Product Excess

Self-propelled autonomous nano/microswimmers are at the forefront of materials science. These swimmers are expected to operate in highly confined environments, such as between the grains of soil or in the capillaries of the human organism. To date, little attention is paid to the problem that in such a confined environment the fuel powering catalytic nano/microswimmers can be exhausted quickly and the space can be polluted with the product of the catalytic reaction. In addition, the motion of the nano/microswimmers may be influenced by the confinement. These issues are addressed here, showing the influence of the size of the capillary and length of the micromotor on the motion and the influence of the depletion of the fuel and excess of the exhaust products. Theoretical modeling is provided as well to bring further insight into the observations. This article shows challenges that these systems face and stimulates research to overcome them.

Liquid Metal Antennas: Materials, Fabrication and Applications

This work reviews design aspects of liquid metal antennas and their corresponding applications. In the age of modern wireless communication technologies, adaptability and versatility have become highly attractive features of any communication device. Compared to traditional conductors like copper, the flow property and lack of elasticity limit of conductive fluids, makes them an ideal alternative for applications demanding mechanically flexible antennas. These fluidic properties also allow innovative antenna fabrication techniques like 3D printing, injecting, or spraying the conductive fluid on rigid/flexible substrates. Such fluids can also be easily manipulated to implement reconfigurability in liquid antennas using methods like micro pumping or electrochemically controlled capillary action as compared to traditional approaches like high-frequency switching. In this work, we discuss attributes of widely used conductive fluids, their novel patterning/fabrication techniques, and their corresponding state-of-the-art applications.

Separation of Nano- and Microparticle Flows Using Thermophoresis in Branched Microfluidic Channels

Particle flow separation is a useful technique in lab-on-a-chip applications to selectively transport dispersed phases to a desired branch in microfluidic devices. The present study aims to demonstrate both nano- and microparticle flow separation using microscale thermophoresis at a Y-shaped branch in microfluidic channels. Microscale thermophoresis is the transport of tiny particles induced by a temperature gradient in fluids where the temperature variation is localized in the region of micrometer order. Localized temperature increases near the branch are achieved using the Joule heat from a thin-film micro electrode embedded in the bottom wall of the microfluidic channel. The inlet flow of the particle dispersion is divided into two outlet flows which are controlled to possess the same flow rates at the symmetric branches. The particle flow into one of the outlets is blocked by microscale thermophoresis since the particles are repelled from the hot region in the experimental conditions used here. As a result, only the solvent at one of outlets and the residual particle dispersion at the other outlet are obtained, i.e., the separation of particles flows is achieved. A simple model to explain the dynamic behavior of the nanoparticle distribution near the electrode is proposed, and a qualitative agreement with the experimental results is obtained. The proposed method can be easily combined with standard microfluidic devices and is expected to facilitate the development of novel particle separation and filtration technologies.

Microfluidic Channels Fabrication Based on Underwater Superpolymphobic Microgrooves Produced by Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing

A strategy is proposed here to fabricate microfluidic channels based on underwater superpolymphobic microgrooves with nanoscale rough surface structure on glass surface produced by femtosecond (fs) laser processing. The fs laser-induced micro/nanostructure on glass surface can repel liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) underwater, with the contact angle (CA) of 155.5 ± 2.5° and CA hysteresis of 2.7 ± 1.5° to a liquid PDMS droplet. Such a phenomenon is defined as the underwater "superpolymphobicity". Microchannels as well as microfluidic systems are easily prepared and formed between the underwater superpolymphobic microgroove-textured glass substrate and the cured PDMS layer. Because the tracks of the laser scanning lines are programmable, arbitrary-shaped microchannels and complex microfluidic systems can be potentially designed and prepared through fs laser direct writing technology. The concept of "underwater superpolymphobicity" presented here offers us a new strategy for selectively avoiding the adhesion at the polymer/substrate interface and controlling the shape of cured polymers; none of these applications can find analogues in previously reported superwetting materials.

Confined Catalytic Janus Swimmers in a Crowded Channel: Geometry-Driven Rectification Transients and Directional Locking

Self-propelled Janus particles, acting as microscopic vehicles, have the potential to perform complex tasks on a microscopic scale, suitable, e.g., for environmental applications, on-chip chemical information processing, or in vivo drug delivery. Development of these smart nanodevices requires a better understanding of how synthetic swimmers move in crowded and confined environments that mimic actual biosystems, e.g., network of blood vessels. Here, the dynamics of self-propelled Janus particles interacting with catalytically passive silica beads in a narrow channel is studied both experimentally and through numerical simulations. Upon varying the area density of the silica beads and the width of the channel, active transport reveals a number of intriguing properties, which range from distinct bulk and boundary-free diffusivity at low densities, to directional "locking" and channel "unclogging" at higher densities, whereby a Janus swimmer is capable of transporting large clusters of passive particles.

Scanning laser image correlation for measurement of flow

Scanning laser image correlation (SLIC) is an optical correlation technique for measuring the fluid velocity of particles suspended in a liquid. This technique combines laser scanning of an arbitrary pattern with pair cross-correlation between any two points in the pattern. SLIC overcomes many of the limitations of other optical correlation techniques for flow measurement, such as laser speckle, spatial temporal image correlation spectroscopy, and two-foci methods. One of the main advantages of SLIC is that the concept can be applied to measurements on a range of scales through simple zooming or modifications in the instrumentation. Additionally, SLIC is relatively insensitive to instrument noise through the use of correlation analysis and is insensitive to background. SLIC can provide detailed information about the direction and pattern of flow. SLIC has potential applications ranging from microfluidics to blood flow measurements.

Micropore and nanopore fabrication in hollow antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides

We demonstrate the fabrication of micropore and nanopore features in hollow antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides to create an electrical and optical analysis platform that can size select and detect a single nanoparticle. Micropores (4 μm diameter) are reactive-ion etched through the top SiO(2) and SiN layers of the waveguides, leaving a thin SiN membrane above the hollow core. Nanopores are formed in the SiN membranes using a focused ion-beam etch process that provides control over the pore size. Openings as small as 20 nm in diameter are created. Optical loss measurements indicate that micropores did not significantly alter the loss along the waveguide.

Spatiotemporal image correlation spectroscopy measurements of flow demonstrated in microfluidic channels

Accurate blood flow measurements during surgery can improve an operation's chance of success. We developed near-infrared spatio-temporal image spectroscopy (NIR-STICS), which has the potential to make blood flow measurements that are difficult to accomplish with existing methods. Specifically, we propose the technique and we show feasibility on phantom measurements. NIR-STICS has the potential of measuring the fluid velocity in small blood vessels (less than 1 mm in diameter) and of creating a map of blood flow rates over an area of approximately 1 cm(2). NIR-STICS employs near-infrared spectroscopy to probe inside blood vessel walls and spatiotemporal image correlation spectroscopy to directly-without the use of a model-extract fluid velocity from the fluctuations within an image. We present computer simulations and experiments on a phantom system that demonstrate the effectiveness of NIR-STICS.
