Dynamics of Pd Subsurface Hydride Formation and Their Impact on the Selectivity Control for Selective Butadiene Hydrogenation Reaction

Structure-sensitive catalyzed reactions can be influenced by a number of parameters. So far, it has been established that the formation of Pd-C species is responsible for the behavior of Pd nanoparticles employed as catalysts in a butadiene partial hydrogenation reaction. In this study, we introduce some experimental evidence indicating that subsurface Pd hydride species are governing the reactivity of this reaction. In particular, we detect that the extent of formation/decomposition of PdHx species is very sensitive to the Pd nanoparticle aggregate dimensions, and this finally controls the selectivity in this process. The main and direct methodology applied to determine this reaction mechanism step is time-resolved high-energy X-ray diffraction (HEXRD).

VSe2-x O x @Pd Sensor for Operando Self-Monitoring of Palladium-Catalyzed Reactions

Operando monitoring of catalytic reaction kinetics plays a key role in investigating the reaction pathways and revealing the reaction mechanisms. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been demonstrated as an innovative tool in tracking molecular dynamics in heterogeneous reactions. However, the SERS performance of most catalytic metals is inadequate. In this work, we propose hybridized VSe_2-x O _x @Pd sensors to track the molecular dynamics in Pd-catalyzed reactions. Benefiting from metal-support interactions (MSI), the VSe_2-x O _x @Pd realizes strong charge transfer and enriched density of states near the Fermi level, thereby strongly intensifying the photoinduced charge transfer (PICT) to the adsorbed molecules and consequently enhancing the SERS signals. The excellent SERS performance of the VSe_2-x O _x @Pd offers the possibility for self-monitoring the Pd-catalyzed reaction. Taking the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction as an example, operando investigations of Pd-catalyzed reactions were demonstrated on the VSe_2-x O _x @Pd, and the contributions from PICT resonance were illustrated by wavelength-dependent studies. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of improved SERS performance of catalytic metals by modulating the MSI and offers a valid means to investigate the mechanisms of Pd-catalyzed reactions based on VSe_2-x O _x @Pd sensors.

Pd Reaction Intermediates in Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Characterized by Mass Spectrometry

Palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) coupling is widely utilized in the construction of carbon-carbon bonds. In this study, nanoelectrospray ionization mass spectrometry (nanoESI-MS) is applied to simultaneously monitor precatalysts, catalytic intermediates, reagents, and products of the SM cross-coupling reaction of 3-Br-5-Ph-pyridine and phenylboronic acid. A set of Pd cluster ions related to the monoligated Pd (0) active catalyst is detected, and its deconvoluted isotopic distribution reveals contributions from two neutral molecules. One is assigned to the generally accepted Pd(0) active catalyst, seen in MS as the protonated molecule, while the other is tentatively assigned to an oxidized catalyst which was found to increase as the reaction proceeds. Oxidative stress testing of a synthetic model catalyst 1,5-cyclooctadiene Pd XPhos (COD-Pd-XPhos) performed using FeCl3 supported this assignment. The formation and conversion of the oxidative addition intermediate during the catalytic cycle was monitored to provide information on the progress of the transmetalation step.

Distorted Sandwich a-Diimine Pd(II) Catalyst: Linear Polyethylene and Synthesis of Ethylene/Acrylate Elastomers

The introduction of m-xylyl substituents to α-diimine Pd(II) catalyst promotes living ethylene polymerization at room temperature and low pressure to yield high molecular weight polyethylene (PE) with low branching (<17/1000C). m-Xylyl groups provide a highly effective blockage to the axial sites of the catalytic center and form a distorted sandwich geometry. The shielding prevents chain-transfer and easy accessibility of polar monomers, leading to a living polymerization. Conducting a light irradiation as part of the one-step metal-organic insertion light initiated radical (MILRad) process leads to diblock copolymers of ethylene and acrylates. Incorporation of different acrylate block sequences can significantly modify the mechanical and chemical properties of block copolymers which can be modulated to be a hard plastic, elastomer, or semi-amorphous polymer.

Ultrahigh Branching of Main-Chain-Functionalized Polyethylenes by Inverted Insertion Selectivity

Branched polyolefin microstructures resulting from so-called "chain walking" are a fascinating feature of late transition metal catalysts; however, to date it has not been demonstrated how desirable branched polyolefin microstructures can be generated thereby. We demonstrate how highly branched polyethylenes with methyl branches (220 Me/1000 C) exclusively and very high molecular weights (ca. 106  g mol-1 ), reaching the branch density and microstructure of commercial ethylene-propylene elastomers, can be generated from ethylene alone. At the same time, polar groups on the main chain can be generated by in-chain incorporation of methyl acrylate. Key to this strategy is a novel rigid environment in an α-diimine PdII catalyst with a steric constraint that allows for excessive chain walking and branching, but restricts branch formation to methyl branches, hinders chain transfer to afford a living polymerization, and inverts the regioselectivity of acrylate insertion to a 1,2-mode.

AB- Versus AA+BB-Suzuki Polycondensation: A Palladium/Tris(tert-butyl)phosphine Catalyst Can Outperform Conventional Catalysts

A Pd/Pt-Bu₃ catalyst having bulky, electron-rich ligands significantly outperforms conventional "step-growth catalysts" Pd(PPh₃ )₄ and Pd(Po-Tol₃ )₃ in the Suzuki polycondensation of the AB-type arylene-based monomers, such as some of the substituted fluorenes, carbazoles, and phenylenes. In the AA+BB polycondensation, Pd/Pt-Bu₃ also performs better under homogeneous reaction conditions, in combination with the organic base Et₄ NOH. The superior performance of Pd/Pt-Bu₃ is discussed in terms of its higher reactivity in the oxidative addition step and inherent advantages of the intramolecular catalyst transfer, which is a key step joining catalytic cycles of the AB-polycondensation. These findings are applied to the synthesis of a carbazole-based copolymer designed for the use as a hole conductor in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes.

Addition Polyalkylnorbornenes: A Promising New Class of Si-Free Membrane Materials for Hydrocarbons Separation

Nanoporous glassy polymers are perspective materials for the fabrication of gas separation membranes, especially for the application of gaseous hydrocarbon separation. However, the drawback of such materials is the pronounced physical aging resulting in the dramatic drop of gas transport properties due to relaxation of high-free-volume fraction in time. Herein, a novel and readily available group of such glassy polymers is reported based on 5-alkylnorbornenes. These polymers are easily synthesized from dicyclopentadiene and α-olefins by Diels-Alder reaction and vinyl (addition) polymerization of the formed cycloadducts in the presence of ([(η³ -C₃ H₅ )PdCl]₂ /PCy₃ /Na⁺ [B(3,5-(CF₃ )₂ C₆ H₃ )₄ ]^- catalyst. The obtained polymers display low-fraction free volume, stable gas permeability over time, and possess a unique feature for the glassy polymers-solubility controlled permeation of hydrocarbons and enhanced C₄ H₁₀ /CH₄ selectivity.

Palladium-Catalyzed Tunable Carbonylative Synthesis of Enones and Benzofulvenes

A palladium-catalyzed four-component carbonylative coupling reaction involving aryl halides, internal alkynes, arylboronic acids, and CO has been developed for the first time. All-carbon substituted α-unsaturated ketones and benzofulvenes can be selectively obtained in a highly regio- and stereocontrolled manner. Using Cu(TFA)₂ as the additive, a series of tetrasubstituted α-unsaturated ketones were prepared in moderate to high yields. Using more acidic Lewis acid Cu(OTf)₂ as the additive, multisubstituted benzofluvenes were synthesized in moderate yields. This efficient methodology involved the formation of three new C-C bonds, and provided a divergent method for the quick construction of multisubstituted α-unsaturated ketones and benzofulvenes from easily available starting materials.

Direct Synthesis of Functionalized High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene by Copolymerization of Ethylene with Polar Monomers

The introduction of even a small amount of polar functional groups into polyolefins could excise great control over important material properties. As the most direct and economic strategy, the transition-metal-catalyzed copolymerization of olefins with polar, functionalized monomers represents one of the biggest challenges in this field. The presence of polar monomers usually dramatically reduces the catalytic activity and copolymer molecular weight (to the level of thousands or even hundreds Da), rendering the copolymerization process and the copolymer materials far from ideal for industrial applications. In this contribution, we demonstrate that these obstacles can be addressed through rational catalyst design. Copolymers with highly linear microstructures, high melting temperatures, and very high molecular weights (close to or above 1 000 000 Da) were generated. The direct synthesis of polar functionalized high-molecular-weight polyethylene was thus achieved.

Microwave Deposition of Palladium Catalysts on Graphite Spheres and Reduced Graphene Oxide Sheets for Electrochemical Glucose Sensing

This work outlines a synthetic strategy inducing the microwave-assisted synthesis of palladium (Pd) nanocrystals on a graphite sphere (GS) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) supports, forming the Pd catalysts for non-enzymatic glucose oxidation reaction (GOR). The pulse microwave approach takes a short period (i.e., 10 min) to fast synthesize Pd nanocrystals onto a carbon support at 150 °C. The selection of carbon support plays a crucial role in affecting Pd particle size and dispersion uniformity. The robust design of Pd-rGO catalyst electrode displays an enhanced electrocatalytic activity and sensitivity toward GOR. The enhanced performance is mainly attributed to the synergetic effect that combines small crystalline size and two-dimensional conductive support, imparting high accessibility to non-enzymatic GOR. The rGO sheets serve as a conductive scaffold, capable of fast conducting electron. The linear plot of current response versus glucose concentration exhibits good correlations within the range of 1–12 mM. The sensitivity of the Pd-rGO catalyst is significantly enhanced by 3.7 times, as compared to the Pd-GS catalyst. Accordingly, the Pd-rGO catalyst electrode can be considered as a potential candidate for non-enzymatic glucose biosensor.

Direct Arylation Strategies in the Synthesis of π-Extended Monomers for Organic Polymeric Solar Cells

π-conjugated macromolecules for organic polymeric solar cells can be rationally engineered at the molecular level in order to tune the optical, electrochemical and solid-state morphology characteristics, and thus to address requirements for the efficient solid state device implementation. The synthetic accessibility of monomers and polymers required for the device is getting increasing attention. Direct arylation reactions for the production of the π-extended scaffolds are gaining importance, bearing clear advantages over traditional carbon-carbon forming methodologies. Although their use in the final polymerization step is already established, there is a need for improving synthetic accessibility to implement them also in the monomer synthesis. In this review, we discuss recent examples highlighting this useful strategy.

Visible and Near-Infrared Photothermal Catalyzed Hydrogenation of Gaseous CO2 over Nanostructured Pd@Nb2O5

The reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction driven by Nb2O5 nanorod-supported Pd nanocrystals without external heating using visible and near infrared (NIR) light is demonstrated. By measuring the dependence of the RWGS reaction rates on the intensity and spectral power distribution of filtered light incident onto the nanostructured Pd@Nb2O5 catalyst, it is determined that the RWGS reaction is activated photothermally. That is the RWGS reaction is initiated by heat generated from thermalization of charge carriers in the Pd nanocrystals that are excited by interband and intraband absorption of visible and NIR light. Taking advantage of this photothermal effect, a visible and NIR responsive Pd@Nb2O5 hybrid catalyst that efficiently hydrogenates CO2 to CO at an impressive rate as high as 1.8 mmol gcat-1 h-1 is developed. The mechanism of this photothermal reaction involves H2 dissociation on Pd nanocrystals and subsequent spillover of H to the Nb2O5 nanorods whereupon adsorbed CO2 is hydrogenated to CO. This work represents a significant enhancement in our understanding of the underlying mechanism of photothermally driven CO2 reduction and will help guide the way toward the development of highly efficient catalysts that exploit the full solar spectrum to convert gas-phase CO2 to valuable chemicals and fuels.
