Parents' Perceptions and Responses to the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy

OBJECTIVE

To record parents' awareness of the UK soft drinks industry levy (SDIL) and explore associations between negative psychological reactance to the levy and motivation and intentions to change consumption and purchasing.

METHODS

A cross-sectional online survey with UK-based parents of children aged 5-11 years (n = 237). Regression analyses were used to test associations between psychosocial responses to the levy and behavioral intentions to change family consumption and purchasing.

RESULTS

A total of 92% of responding parents were aware of the SDIL. Of the responding parents, 57% supported its aims, but 29% felt it threatened their freedom of choice. A total of 41% expressed intention to change shopping habits or restrict their child's intake as a result. Reactance and motivation were poorer in low-income families, and intentions to change were positively predicted by motivation.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

This snapshot suggests that the UK SDIL is largely supported by parents and associated with intentions to change their children's intake.

Use of Smartphones to Prospectively Evaluate Predictors and Outcomes of Caregiver Responses to Pain in Youth with Chronic Disease

This study examined outcomes and predictors of different types of responses to child pain used by caregivers of youth with chronic disease. Sixty-six children and adolescents (ages 7-18) with juvenile idiopathic arthritis answered questions about pain, pain interference in activities, and mood on a smartphone three times per day for one month, while a caregiver contemporaneously answered questions about their own mood and use of protecting, monitoring, minimizing, or distracting responses to their child's pain. Multilevel models were used to evaluate (a) how a child's pain and pain interference changes after a caregiver uses different types of pain responses; (b) the extent to which caregiver responses to pain vary across days; and (c) whether variability in caregiver responses to pain is predicted by changes in child pain characteristics, child mood, and/or caregiver mood. Results showed that children's pain intensity and pain interference increased following moments when caregivers used more protective responses, whereas children's pain interference decreased following times when caregivers responded with minimizing responses. Caregiver pain responses varied considerably across days, with caregivers responding with more protecting and monitoring responses and fewer minimizing responses at moments when their child reported high levels of pain unpleasantness and pain interference. Caregivers also were found to respond with fewer protective responses at moments when they themselves were in a more positive mood. Implications for clinical recommendations and future studies are discussed.

Development of the parent response to child illness (PRCI) scale

The aims of this study were to develop an instrument to measure parents' responses and perceptions related to the onset of either seizures or asthma in a child (aged 4-14) and to assess the initial reliability and validity of the instrument. The 35-item scale developed comprised five subscales: Child Support, Family Life/Leisure, Condition Management, Child Autonomy, and Child Discipline. Subjects were parents of 224 children with new-onset seizures and 104 parents of children with new-onset asthma. Internal consistency reliabilities were stronger for Child Support, Family Life/Leisure, and Condition Management than for Child Autonomy and Child Discipline for both samples. Test-retest reliability ranged from good to fair for both samples. The associations between parent positive mood and all of the subscales for both samples in the predicted directions provided key empirical support for validity. The scale has potential for use in research and in the clinical setting. In addition, the scale has potential to be used with other conditions.
