Additive-controlled chemoselective inter-/intramolecular hydroamination via electrochemical PCET process

Electrochemically generated amidyl radical species produced distinct inter- or intramolecular hydroamination reaction products via a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis indicated that the chemoselectivity was derived from the size of the hydrogen bond complex, which consisted of the carbamate substrate and phosphate base, and could be controlled using 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as an additive. These results provide fundamental insights for the design of PCET-based redox reaction systems under electrochemical conditions.

Rebound or Cage Escape? The Role of the Rebound Barrier for the Reactivity of Non-Heme High-Valent FeIV =O Species

Owing to their high reactivity and selectivity, variations in the spin ground state and a range of possible pathways, high-valent FeIV =O species are popular models with potential bioinspired applications. An interesting example of a structure-reactivity pattern is the detailed study with five nonheme amine-pyridine pentadentate ligand FeIV =O species, including N4py: [(L1 )FeIV =O]2+ (1), bntpen: [(L2 )FeIV =O]2+ (2), py2 tacn: [(L3 )FeIV =O]2+ (3), and two isomeric bispidine derivatives: [(L4 )FeIV =O]2+ (4) and [(L5 )FeIV =O]2+ (5). In this set, the order of increasing reactivity in the hydroxylation of cyclohexane differs from that with cyclohexadiene as substrate. A comprehensive DFT, ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 and DLPNO-CCSD(T) study is presented to untangle the observed patterns. These are well reproduced when both activation barriers for the C-H abstraction and the OH rebound are taken into account. An MO, NBO and deformation energy analysis reveals the importance of π(pyr) → π*xz (FeIII -OH) electron donation for weakening the FeIII -OH bond and thus reducing the rebound barrier. This requires that pyridine rings are oriented perpendicularly to the FeIII -OH bond and this is a subtle but crucial point in ligand design for non-heme iron alkane hydroxylation.

Evidence for a High-Valent Iron-Fluoride That Mediates Oxidative C(sp3)-H Fluorination

[Fe^II(NCCH₃)(NTB)](OTf)₂ (NTB = tris(2-benzimidazoylmethyl)amine, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) was reacted with difluoro(phenyl)-λ³-iodane (PhIF₂) in the presence of a variety of saturated hydrocarbons, resulting in the oxidative fluorination of the hydrocarbons in moderate-to-good yields. Kinetic and product analysis point towards a hydrogen atom transfer oxidation prior to fluorine radical rebound to form the fluorinated product. The combined evidence supports the formation of a formally Fe^IV(F)₂ oxidant that performs hydrogen atom transfer followed by the formation of a dimeric μ-F-(Fe^III)₂ product that is a plausible fluorine atom transfer rebound reagent. This approach mimics the heme paradigm for hydrocarbon hydroxylation, opening up avenues for oxidative hydrocarbon halogenation.

Understanding the Surprising Oxidation Chemistry of Au-OH Complexes

Au is known to be fairly redox inactive (in catalysis) and bind oxygen adducts only quite weakly. It is thus rather surprising that stable Au-OH complexes can be synthesized and used as oxidants for both one- and two-electron oxidations. A charged Au^III -OH complex has been shown to cleave C-H and O-H bonds homolytically, resulting in a one-electron reduction of the metal center. Contrasting this, a neutral Au^III -OH complex performs oxygen atom transfer to phosphines, resulting in a two-electron reduction of the hydroxide proton to form a Au^III -H rather than causing a change in oxidation state of the metal. We explore the details of these two examples and draw comparisons to the more conventional reactivity exhibited by Au^I -OH. Although the current scope of known Au-OH oxidation chemistry is still in its infancy, the current literature exemplifies the unique properties of Au chemistry and shows promise for future findings in the field.

Photochemical Hydrogen Storage with Hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATN)

When irradiated with violet light, hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATN) extracts a hydrogen atom from an alcohol forming a long-living hydrogenated species. The kinetic isotope effect for fluorescence decay in deuterated methanol (1.56) indicates that the lowest singlet excited state of the molecule is a precursor for intermolecular hydrogen transfer. The photochemical hydrogenation occurs in several alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) but not in water. Hydrogenated HATN can be detected optically by an absorption band at 1.78 eV as well as with EPR and NMR techniques. Mass spectroscopy of photoproducts reveal di-hydrogenated HATN structures along with methoxylated and methylated HATN molecules which are generated through the reaction with methoxy radicals (remnants from alcohol splitting). Experimental findings are consistent with the theoretical results which predicted that for the excited state of the HATN-solvent molecular complex, there exists a barrierless hydrogen transfer from methanol but a barrier for the similar oxidation of water.

Visible-Light-Driven, Iridium-Catalyzed Hydrogen Atom Transfer: Mechanistic Studies, Identification of Intermediates, and Catalyst Improvements

The harvesting of visible light is a powerful strategy for the synthesis of weak chemical bonds involving hydrogen that are below the thermodynamic threshold for spontaneous H₂ evolution. Piano-stool iridium hydride complexes are effective for the blue-light-driven hydrogenation of organic substrates and contra-thermodynamic dearomative isomerization. In this work, a combination of spectroscopic measurements, isotopic labeling, structure-reactivity relationships, and computational studies has been used to explore the mechanism of these stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. Photophysical measurements on the iridium hydride catalysts demonstrated the generation of long-lived excited states with principally metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) character. Transient absorption spectroscopic studies with a representative substrate, anthracene revealed a diffusion-controlled dynamic quenching of the MLCT state. The triplet state of anthracene was detected immediately after the quenching events, suggesting that triplet-triplet energy transfer initiated the photocatalytic process. The key role of triplet anthracene on the post-energy transfer step was further demonstrated by employing photocatalytic hydrogenation with a triplet photosensitizer and a HAT agent, hydroquinone. DFT calculations support a concerted hydrogen atom transfer mechanism in lieu of stepwise electron/proton or proton/electron transfer pathways. Kinetic monitoring of the deactivation channel established an inverse kinetic isotope effect, supporting reversible C(sp²)-H reductive coupling followed by rate-limiting ligand dissociation. Mechanistic insights enabled design of a piano-stool iridium hydride catalyst with a rationally modified supporting ligand that exhibited improved photostability under blue light irradiation. The complex also provided improved catalytic performance toward photoinduced hydrogenation with H₂ and contra-thermodynamic isomerization.

Exploring the Role of H-Bonding in Organic Electrochemistry - From Supramolecular Applications to Mechanistic Investigations

H-bonds can exert a substantial impact on the course of organic electrode reactions due to their ability to stabilize charged intermediates and products formed during these reactions, as well as facilitate proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions. This has fundamental implications for the mechanism of organic electrode reactions, but also practical impact in supramolecular chemistry and potentially synthetic electrochemistry. My group's main focus has been on the supramolecular applications, using electron transfer to alter the strength of H-bonds to create highly redox-responsive H-bond dimers. Initially we sought to avoid proton transfer because we feared that would lead to irreversible electrochemistry. However, inevitably proton transfer did show up, but, to our surprise, did not lead to irreversible electrochemistry. To explain this, we developed a new mechanism, the "wedge scheme", that shows how H-bonding can facilitate reversible electron and proton transfer. This insight recently led us to a new PCET-based design strategy for the creation of our most highly redox-responsive H-bond dimers yet.

Water-Assisted Concerted Proton-Electron Transfer at Co(II)-Aquo Sites in Polyoxotungstates With Photogenerated RuIII (bpy)33+ Oxidant

The cobalt substituted polyoxotungstate [Co6 (H2 O)2 (α-B-PW9 O34 )2 (PW6 O26 )]17- (Co6) displays fast electron transfer (ET) kinetics to photogenerated RuIII (bpy)33+ , 4 to 5 orders of magnitude faster than the corresponding ET observed for cobalt oxide nanoparticles. Mechanistic evidence has been acquired indicating that: (i) the one-electron oxidation of Co6 involves Co(II) aquo or Co(II) hydroxo groups (abbreviated as Co6(II)-OH2 and Co6(II)-OH, respectively, whose speciation in aqueous solution is associated to a pKa of 7.6), and generates a Co(III)-OH moiety (Co6(III)-OH), as proven by transient absorption spectroscopy; (ii) at pH>pKa , the Co6(II)-OH→RuIII (bpy)33+ ET occurs via bimolecular kinetics, with a rate constant k close to the diffusion limit and dependent on the ionic strength of the medium, consistent with reaction between charged species; (iii) at pH Collapse

Photoinduced Electron vs. Concerted Proton Electron Transfer Pathways in SnIV (l-Tryptophanato)2 Porphyrin Conjugates

Aromatic amino acids such as l‐tyrosine and l‐tryptophan are deployed in natural systems to mediate electron transfer (ET) reactions. While tyrosine oxidation is always coupled to deprotonation (proton‐coupled electron‐transfer, PCET), both ET‐only and PCET pathways can occur in the case of the tryptophan residue. In the present work, two novel conjugates 1 and 2, based on a Sn^IV tetraphenylporphyrin and Sn^IV octaethylporphyrin, respectively, as the chromophore/electron acceptor and l‐tryptophan as electron/proton donor, have been prepared and thoroughly characterized by a combination of different techniques including single crystal X‐ray analysis. The photophysical investigation of 1 and 2 in CH₂Cl₂ in the presence of pyrrolidine as a base shows that different quenching mechanisms are operating upon visible‐light excitation of the porphyrin component, namely photoinduced electron transfer and concerted proton electron transfer (CPET), depending on the chromophore identity and spin multiplicity of the excited state. The results are compared with those previously described for metal‐mediated analogues featuring Sn^IV porphyrin chromophores and l‐tyrosine as the redox active amino acid and well illustrate the peculiar role of l‐tryptophan with respect to PCET.

An electron density based analysis to establish the electronic adiabaticity of proton coupled electron transfer reactions

Electrons and protons are the main actors in play in proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions, which are fundamental in many biological (i.e., photosynthesis and enzymatic reactions) and electrochemical processes. The mechanism, energetics and kinetics of PCET reactions are strongly controlled by the coupling between the transferred electrons and protons. Concerted PCET reactions are classified according to the electronical adiabaticity degree of the process. To discriminate among different mechanisms, we propose a new analysis based on the use of electron density based indexes. We choose, as test case, the 3-Methylphenoxyl/phenol system in two different conformations to show how the proposed analysis is a suitable tool to discriminate between the different degree of adiabaticity of PCET processes. The very low computational cost of this procedure is extremely promising to analyze and provide evidences of PCET mechanisms ruling the reactivity of many biological and catalytic systems.

Interconversion of Phosphinyl Radical and Phosphinidene Complexes by Proton Coupled Electron Transfer

The isolable complex [Os(PHMes*)H(PNP)] (Mes*=2,4,6-t Bu3 C6 H3 ; PNP=N{CHCHPt Bu2 }2 ) exhibits high phosphinyl radical character. This compound offers access to the phosphinidene complex [Os(PMes*)H(PNP)] by P-H proton coupled electron transfer (PCET). The P-H bond dissociation energy (BDE) was determined by isothermal titration calorimetry and supporting DFT computations. The phosphinidene product exhibits electrophilic reactivity as demonstrated by intramolecular C-H activation.

Theoretical study of proton coupled electron transfer reaction in the light state of the AppA BLUF photoreceptor

The BLUF (blue light sensor using flavin adenine dinucleotide) domain is widely studied as a prototype for proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions in biological systems. In this work, the photo-induced concerted PCET reaction from the light state of the AppA BLUF domain is investigated. To model the simultaneous transfer of two protons in the reaction, two-dimensional potential energy surfaces for the double proton transfer are first calculated for the locally excited and charge transfer states, which are then used to obtain the vibrational wave function overlaps and the vibrational energy levels. Contributions to the PCET rate constant from each pair of vibronic states are then analyzed using the theory based on the Fermi's golden rule. We show that, the recently proposed light state structure of the BLUF domain with a tautomerized Gln63 residue is consistent with the concerted transfer of one electron and two protons. It is also found that, thermal fluctuations of the protein structure, especially the proton donor-acceptor distances, play an important role in determining the PCET reaction rate. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Excited State Interaction of Ruthenium (II) Imidazole Phenanthroline Complex [Ru(bpy)2 ipH]2+ with 1,4-Benzoquinone: Simple Electron Transfer or Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer?

The unidirectional proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) from the excited state of Ru(II) imidazole phenanthroline complex [Ru(bpy)₂ ipH]²⁺ to 1,4-benzoquinone, was studied by steady-state (SS) and time-resolved (TR) fluorescence and transient absorption (TA) measurements. The pK_a (9.7) and pK_a * (8.6) values of the complex suggest that it behaves as a photoacid on excitation. The difference in the quenching rates obtained from SS and TR fluorescence studies indicate participation of both dynamic quenching and static quenching involving the hydrogen bonded ipH ligand of [Ru(bpy)₂ ipH]²⁺ with the 1,4-benzoquinone quencher, formed in the ground state. Within the hydrogen bonded complex, the ruthenium centre acts as the electron donor, while the ipH ligand acts as the proton donor to the hydrogen bonded 1,4-benzoquinone that acts simultaneously both as the electron and proton acceptor. It is proposed that the static quenching in the hydrogen bonded [Ru(bpy)₂ ipH]²⁺ -1,4-benzoquinone pairs occurs involving the PCET mechanism, while the dynamic quenching occurs through the simple ET mechanism, on diffusional encounter of the isolated 1,4-benzoquinone with the excited [Ru(bpy)₂ ipH]²⁺ complex. The occurrence of broad TA bands around 420-430 nm suggests formation of both 1,4-benzoquinone radical anion as well as the 1,4-benzosemiquinone radical by the interaction of excited [Ru(bpy)₂ ipH]²⁺ with 1,4-benzoquinone, thus supporting the ET process in the studied system.
