Considering Two Aspects of Fish Welfare on African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Fillet throughout Postmortem Condition: Efficiency and Mechanisms

Knowledge about fish welfare and its impact on fish fillet quality is still insufficient. Therefore, the influence of two aspects of fish welfare (slaughtering method: bled and unbled fish; fish stock densities: 90, 120, and 150 kg·m^-3) on African catfish fillet quality during postmortem conditions was investigated. The aim of study was to determine (i) the efficiency of bleeding on oxidation progress and (ii) the influence of stock density on fillet quality. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) showed a higher protein loss in the unbled than in the bled groups, especially in the heavy myosin chain (MHC) band. However, density did not show any influence on protein profile. Western blot analysis showed fewer oxidized carbonyls in the bled than in the unbled groups; higher oxidation development, microbial growth, and lower hardness were observed in unbled fillets. Additionally, hardness was higher at 90 and 120 kg·m^-3 densities in bled fillet compared to 150 kg·m^-3. The first three days of storage showed a higher oxidation rate in unbled fillets than in bled fillets, confirming the contribution of hemoglobin to oxidation development with different mechanisms of protein oxidation. The obtained results revealed the same fillet quality in all aspects at either 90 or 120 (kg·m^-3) stock densities, which would suggest 120 kg·m^-3 for the fishery industry. However, higher stocking density in this study would not be appropriate for fish welfare.

Phenotypic and Genetic Components for Growth, Morphology, and Flesh-Quality Traits of Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) Reared in Tank and Sea Cage

Meagre is an emergent species in aquaculture, due to its fast growth rate, low feed conversion ratio, and the high quality of the product. Although advances have been achieved in its management, reproduction, and feeding, breeding programs have not yet been developed. For this reason, this study aimed to provide information about the genetic variations in growth, morphology traits, and flesh chemical composition to be included in a selective breeding program, studied in two different housing systems (cage and tank). Heritabilities for growth and morphology traits, and for fillet fat percentage were medium, revealing those traits as a possible selection criterion in a breeding program. Image analysis provided a great amount of objective information regarding the different morphological traits of the fish, where a positive and high correlation with growth traits was observed. Positive phenotypic correlation between fillet fat percentage and body weight was observed, so a selection process to improve growth rate could lead to a fish with higher fillet fat percentage.

Abstract

Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) plays an important role in the aquaculture system, with the potential for diversification of European aquaculture, and is characterized by its fast growth rate, low feed conversion ratio, and the high quality of the product. Focusing on the relevance of meagre, the aim of the study was to analyze growth performance, fish morphology, and flesh composition phenotypically and genetically to be considered as a strategy in a breeding program. For this purpose, 633 fish were raised in two different housing systems, in sea cages or in a continental tank, and when they reached harvest size, manual growth traits, automatic morphology by the image analysis program IMAFISH_ML, and flesh chemical composition (fat, protein, moisture, and collagen percentages) were measured. The fish reared in the cages showed a higher body weight and fillet fat percentage than those in the tank. Heritabilities for growth and morphology traits, and for fillet fat percentage were medium, revealing these traits as a possible selection criterion in a breeding program. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between growth and morphology traits were positive and high. Phenotypic correlations between growth or morphology traits with fillet fat percentage were positive and medium; genetic correlations were not estimated accurately.

[Probability distribution characteristics of stock density in offshore of northern South China Sea.]

Based on catch data from the bottom trawl survey by eight cruises in offshore of northern South China Sea during 2014-2017, we analyzed the stock density distribution and explored its probability distribution with statistical method, which was further used to estimate the mean stock density in this region. The results showed that the coefficient of variation (CV) for stock density ranged from 0.67 to 1.03 for all the periods, indicating a highly uneven spatial distribution of stock density. The frequency distribution of fishery resource density was characterized by obvious right-skewed, which was dominated by stock density of 0-1000 kg·km^-2. The results of one sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicated that three probability distribution patterns were suitable for stock density in this region, including Lognormal, Gamma and Weibull distributions. In terms of the mean stock density estimation, the values from Lognormal showed no statistically significant difference from those from others, but the opposite result was obtained between Gamma and Weibull distributions. Compared with 1960s-1970s, the appropriate probability distribution pattern of stock density has changed from single to multiple types. Variation of the proportion of low catch resulted from the changes in the structure of fishery resources, fishing effort and climate change might cause the alte-ration of probability distribution.

Effects of stock density on the laying performance, blood parameter, corticosterone, litter quality, gas emission and bone mineral density of laying hens in floor pens

The effects of stocking density on the performance, egg quality, leukocyte concentration, blood biochemistry, corticosterone levels, bone mineral density, and noxious gas emission of laying hens were investigated. Eight hundred 34-week-old Hy-Line Brown laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) were randomly assigned to one of 4 treatments, each of which was replicated 4 times. Four stocking densities, including 5, 6, 7, and 10 birds/m2, were compared. A commercial-type basal diet was formulated to meet or exceed nutrient recommendations for laying hens from the National Research Council. The diet was fed to the hens ad libitum for 8 wk. Results indicated that hen-day egg production, egg mass, and feed intake were less for (P < 0.01) 10 birds/m2 stock density than other stock densities. Production rate of floor and broken eggs and eggshell strength were greater (P < 0.01) for 10 birds/m2 stock density than other stock densities. There were no significant differences in the level of leukocytes among densities. However, heterophils and the H/L ratio were greater (P < 0.01) for 10 birds/m2 than in stock density of 6 or 7 birds/m2 Serum corticosterone was greater (P < 0.01) 10 birds/m2 than stock density than other stock densities. Litter moisture and gas emission (CO2 and NH3) were greater (P < 0.01) for 10 birds/m2 than stock density than 6 and 7 birds/m2 stock density. Bone mineral content was not influenced by increasing stock density. However, bone mineral density was less (P < 0.05) for 10 m2 stock density than other stock densities. These results indicate that increasing the density beyond 5 birds/m2 elicits some negative effects on laying performance of Hy-Line brown laying hens.
