Enhancing Medical Students' Knowledge and Performance in Otolaryngology Rotation through Combining Microlearning and Task-Based Learning Strategies

Microlearning is recommended to be implemented within the context of a wider teaching-learning ecosystem, especially in real working environments. Task-based learning is used in clinical education setting. This study aims at assessing the effect of an integrated approach of microlearning with task-based learning on medical students' knowledge and performance in Ear, Nose and Throat clerkship rotation. A total of 59 final-year medical students participated in this quasi-experimental study which included two control groups (routine teaching and task-based learning methods) and one intervention group (combined microlearning and task-based learning method). Pre- and post-tests of students' knowledge and performance were assessed through a multiple-choice question test and a Direct Observation Procedural Skills (DOPS) instrument, respectively. Performing Analysis of Covariance for knowledge post-test scores among three groups revealed significant differences (F = 3.423, p-value = 0.040) and the intervention group had the highest score. Analyzing DOPS results showed that the intervention group achieved significantly higher scores compared to the control ones for all the expected tasks (p-values = 0.001). The findings of the present study show that the combined strategy of microlearning with task-based learning is an effective clinical teaching method for enhancing medical students' knowledge and performance in a real working environment.

The impact of multiple representations on students' understanding of vector field concepts: Implementation of simulations and sketching activities into lecture-based recitations in undergraduate physics

Multiple external representations (e.g., diagrams, equations) and their interpretations play a central role in science and science learning as research has shown that they can substantially facilitate the learning and understanding of science concepts. Therefore, multiple and particularly visual representations are a core element of university physics. In electrodynamics, which students encounter already at the beginning of their studies, vector fields are a central representation typically used in two forms: the algebraic representation as a formula and the visual representation depicted by a vector field diagram. While the former is valuable for quantitative calculations, vector field diagrams are beneficial for showing many properties of a field at a glance. However, benefiting from the mutual complementarity of both representations requires representational competencies aiming at referring different representations to each other. Yet, previous study results revealed several student problems particularly regarding the conceptual understanding of vector calculus concepts. Against this background, we have developed research-based, multi-representational learning tasks that focus on the visual interpretation of vector field diagrams aiming at enhancing a broad, mathematical as well as conceptual, understanding of vector calculus concepts. Following current trends in education research and considering cognitive psychology, the tasks incorporate sketching activities and interactive (computer-based) simulations to enhance multi-representational learning. In this article, we assess the impact of the learning tasks in a field study by implementing them into lecture-based recitations in a first-year electrodynamics course at the University of Göttingen. For this, a within- and between-subjects design is used comparing a multi-representational intervention group and a control group working on traditional calculation-based tasks. To analyze the impact of multiple representations, students' performance in a vector calculus test as well as their perceived cognitive load during task processing is compared between the groups. Moreover, analyses offer guidance for further design of multi-representational learning tasks in field-related physics topics.

Development of a Dermatology Diagnostic Techniques Teaching Session: A Nine-Step Approach

Creating effective learning experiences for veterinary clinical skills and procedures can be a challenging task. Drawing from both medical and veterinary education literature and personal experiences as practicing veterinarians and educators, the authors share nine key steps that describe the development process of a pre-clinical veterinary clinical skills teaching session. Relevant research and pedagogical principles supporting the effectiveness of the proposed nine-step process were identified and discussed. The aims of this article were to describe the development of a dermatology techniques teaching session and to provide the reader with a structured approach that can be used as a template to design or audit other clinical skills teaching sessions.

Rational drug therapy education in clinical phase carried out by task-based learning

OBJECTIVES

Irrational drug use results in drug interactions, treatment noncompliance, and drug resistance. Rational pharmacotherapy education is being implemented in many faculties of medicine. Our aim is to introduce rational pharmacotherapy education by clinicians and to evaluate task-based rational drug therapy education in the clinical context.

METHODS

The Kirkpatrick's evaluation model was used for the evaluation of the program. The participants evaluated the program in terms of constituents of the program, utilization, and contribution to learning. Voluntary participants responded to the evaluation forms after the educational program. Data are evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative tools. SPSS (version 21) used for quantitative data for determining mean and standard deviation values. Descriptive qualitative analysis approach is used for the analysis of open-ended questions.

RESULTS

It was revealed that the program and its components have been favorable. A total 95.9% of the students consider the education to be beneficial. Simulated patients practice and personal drug choice/problem-based learning sessions were appreciated by the students in particular. 93.9% of the students stated that all students of medicine should undergo this educational program. Among the five presentations contained in the program, "The Principles of Prescribing" received the highest points (9 ± 1.00) from participating students in general evaluation of the educational program.

CONCLUSION

This study was carried out to improve task-based rational drug therapy education. According to feedback from the students concerning content, method, resource, assessment, and program design; some important changes, especially in number of facilitators and indications, are made in rational pharmacotherapy education in clinical task-based learning program.
