Abstract
Physeal fractures are common musculoskeletal injuries in foals and should be included as a differential diagnosis for the lame or nonweightbearing foal. Careful evaluation of the patient, including precise radiographic assessment, is paramount in determining the options for treatment. Prognosis mostly depends on the patient's age, weight, and fracture location and configuration.

Abstract
Foals are susceptible to many of the same types of fractures as adult horses, often secondary to external sources of trauma. In addition, some types of fractures are specific to foals and occur routinely in horses under 1 year of age. These foal-specific fractures may be due to the unique musculoskeletal properties of the developing animal and may present with distinct clinical signs. Treatment plans and prognoses are tailored specifically to young animals. Common fractures not affecting the long bones in foals are discussed in this article, including osteochondral fragmentation, proximal sesamoid bone fractures/sesamoiditis, and distal phalanx fractures.

Abstract
Many long bone fractures that are not considered repairable in the adult horse are repairable in the foal. This is largely because of reduced patient size and more rapid healing in the foal. When there is no articular communication, the long-term prognosis for athletic function can be very good. Emergency care and transport of the foal with a long bone fracture is different than the adult.

Abstract
Less than 60% of infants undergoing invasive procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit receive analgesic therapy. These infants show long-term decreases in pain sensitivity and cortisol reactivity. In rats, we have previously shown that inflammatory pain experienced on the day of birth significantly decreases adult somatosensory thresholds and responses to anxiety- and stress-provoking stimuli. These long-term changes in pain and stress responsiveness are accompanied by two-fold increases in central met-enkephalin and β-endorphin expression. However, the time course over which these changes in central opioid peptide expression occur, relative to the time of injury, are not known. The present studies were conducted to determine whether the observed changes in adult opioid peptide expression were present within the first postnatal week following injury. The impact of neonatal inflammation on plasma corticosterone, a marker for stress reactivity, was also determined. Brain, spinal cord, and trunk blood were harvested at 24 h, 48 h, and 7 d following intraplantar administration of the inflammatory agent carrageenan on the day of birth. Radioimmunoassay was used to determine plasma corticosterone and met-enkephalin and β-endorphin levels within the forebrain, cortex, midbrain, and spinal cord. Within 24 h of injury, met-enkephalin levels were significantly increased in the midbrain, but decreased in the spinal cord and cortex; forebrain β-endorphin levels were significantly increased as a result of early life pain. Corticosterone levels were also significantly increased. At 7 d post-injury, opioid peptides remained elevated relative to controls, suggesting a time point by which injury-induced changes become programmed and permanent.

Abstract
Commercially available nylon cable ties were used as a method of internal fixation for displaced rib fractures in 8 equine neonates. The procedure was effective, well-tolerated, rapid, and inexpensive. The use of nylon cable ties as internal fixation for displaced rib fractures in foals is an effective surgical procedure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Retrospective study of the causes, location, configuration, treatment and outcome of long bone fractures in newborn calves. MATERIAL AND METHODS The medical records of 125 calves presented during a 16-year period because of fracture of the humerus (3 calves), radius/ulna (14), femur (50) or tibia (58) were evaluated. The majority of calves (61.6%) sustained the fractures during assisted delivery. Of 125 calves, 107 were treated and 18 were euthanized because of concurrent diseases. Conservative treatment was used in 16 calves and surgical treatment in 91. Four of the latter were euthanized because of muscle contraction which prevented fracture reduction, and five others died in surgery. RESULTS Fracture healing occurred after conservative treatment in 10 of 16 calves and after surgical treatment in 44 of 82 calves. The outcome was better in calves with plate and clamp-rod internal fixation (37/58 healed) than with intramedullary pinning (4/16 healed) or external fixation (3/8 healed). There were significant associations (chi2-test, p<0.01) between concurrent diseases and choice of therapy and fracture healing. Of 67 calves that developed complications, only 26 could be cured. Common complications were implant loosening and instability, which were often followed by osteomyelitis and sepsis. Implants were removed in 39 of 44 surgically treated calves that survived up to 6 months postoperatively. Long-term follow up (> 6 months postoperatively) by clinical and radiographic re-examination (25 calves) or telephone inquiry (29 calves) revealed that 54 animals were sound and had returned to their intended use. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE The treatment of long bone fractures in newborn calves remains difficult because of a high incidence of complications. These are most likely attributable to trauma during delivery, which results in insufficient colostrum intake and predisposes to concurrent diseases. In addition, the characteristics of juvenile bones do not provide sufficient physical strength for implants. Therefore, professional and diligent assistance during forced extraction, particularly in presentations with "stifle lock" or "hip lock", is required to minimize the incidence of long bone fractures in newborn calves. Most cases require surgical fixation, which is time consuming, expensive and carries a guarded prognosis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of proximal tibial epiphysiodesis to reduce the tibial plateau slope in young dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) deficient stifles. Of the 14 treated dogs, eight had a bilateral injury, for a total of 22 joints. After physical and radiographical examination and measurement of tibial plateau slope, all of the dogs underwent surgery. Insertion of the screw was placed in the most proximal part of the tibial plateau, in its medio-lateral centre, aiming to the tibial shaft and using a K wire predriven as a guide; correct position of the screw was confirmed with intraoperative fluoroscopy or radiography. In all of the dogs the tibial slope was decreased at the time of physis fusion and the degree of change depended on the age and the breed of the dog at the time of surgery. The minimum change was 4 degrees and the maximum was 24 degrees. There was a statistically significant difference between tibial slope measured before surgery compared to tibial slope measured at the last follow-up visit after surgery. This study shows that the partial proximal tibial fusion in dogs with ACL injuries was effective in reducing the tibial slope during the residual growing time to such an extent to stabilize the joint, provided that the surgery had been carried out when there was still residual growing potential. The technique appeared to be mini-invasive and malalignment complications could be avoided by correct and precise insertion of the screw.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Previous studies have shown that in man ultrasonography is more accurate than radiography for detecting rib fractures. OBJECTIVES To describe clinical, radiographic and ultrasonographic findings related with rib fractures in newborn foals in an equine critical care unit; and to compare diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography to radiography. METHODS A prospective ultrasonographic study was performed on 29 foals presented to the emergency unit. This study was performed at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vétérinaire (CHUV), University of Montreal. Physical examination as well as radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations were performed. RESULTS Thoracic radiographs revealed 10 rib fractures in 5 of 26 (19%) foals. Ultrasonography revealed 49 fractures in 19 of 29 (65%) foals of which fillies (n = 13; 68%) were significantly over represented as were fractures to the left thorax (n = 15; 78%). Seventeen of 19 foals (90%) had rib fractures located 3 cm or less from the costochondral junction, the distal part of the rib being displaced laterally in all cases. In 2 foals, where both thoracic radiographs and ultrasonography detected rib fractures, the site of fractures was located on the mid portion of the rib. Rib fractures were detected only by thoracic radiographs in one foal. Sixty-five percent (32/49) of fractured ribs had a moderate displacement (1-4 mm). CONCLUSIONS Rib fractures are seen frequently in newborn foals in equine critical care units. Ultrasonography is more accurate than radiography and reveals fractures in most patients presented in emergency. The position (costochondral junction) of rib fractures and of the fragments suggest that most thoracic trauma probably occurs during parturition. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE Ultrasound imaging increases awareness and improves the diagnosis of rib fractures in newborn foals.

Abstract
A survey of North American farmed elk (Cervus elaphus) producers was performed to determine the causes of sickness and mortality in farmed elk and to estimate mortality rates. Records over a 10-year period from 8 North American veterinary diagnostic pathology laboratories were also examined and summarized. The primary diagnosis for each record was used to classify diseases into categories such as parasitic, infectious, toxicological, and neoplastic. Nonspecific trauma was the most frequently reported known cause of mortality in both sexes and all age classes by elk producers. Ranked on perceived economic importance, producers cited trauma, chronic wasting disease, calf scours, dystocia, pneumonia, winter tick, tuberculosis, and grain overload. One-year mortality rates for adults and yearlings were 2.6% and 2.7%, respectively. Mortality rates for male and female adult animals were 2.4% and 2.7%, respectively. In general, the major findings of the survey matched reported causes for mortality provided by elk producers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To report rib fracture repair using the Securos Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair System (SCCLRS; Securos Veterinary Orthopedics, Charlton, MA) in a neonatal foal. STUDY DESIGN Case report. ANIMALS A 1-day-old Standardbred foal with fracture of left ribs 2-9. METHODS Four days after admission the foal was anesthetized and rib fractures were repaired using open reduction and the SCCLRS. RESULTS Rib fractures were successfully stabilized and the foal was discharged 7 days postoperatively without further complications. CONCLUSIONS The SCCLRS provided a straightforward, effective method of rib fracture repair in neonatal foals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Effective rib fracture repair in neonatal foals can be achieved with the SCCLRS.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Fractured ribs are encountered quite frequently in newborn Thoroughbred foals, often with fatal outcome. Surgical repair of fractures therefore requires consideration as a means of reducing mortality. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the repair of rib fractures using internal fixation techniques in foals at 2 different equine hospitals following similar diagnostics and case selection. METHODS The records of 14 foals that underwent internal fixation of fracture ribs were reviewed. Subject details, clinical presentation, diagnosis, surgical technique, post operative care and complications were recorded. Follow-up information was obtained in 7 foals. RESULTS The fractured ribs were reduced and stabilised using reconstruction plate(s), self-tapping cortical screws and cerclage wire in 12 cases, Steinmann pins and cerclage wires in 1 case and both techniques in 1 case. Not every rib was reduced on each case. Surgical reduction was performed on an average of 2 ribs, range 1-3 ribs in each foal. At the time of writing, 4 foals had been sold, one age 2 years was in training and 2 others died from unrelated causes. CONCLUSIONS Our data support the use of surgical stabilisation utilising reconstruction plates, self-tapping cortical screws and cerclage wire for selected cases of thoracic trauma in neonatal foals. The use of Steinmann pins may be suboptimal due to cyclic failure, implant migration and the potential for iatrogenic internal thoracic trauma. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE Foals with existing extensive internal thoracic trauma resulting from rib fracture(s), or the potential for such trauma, previously considered to have a guarded to poor prognosis for survival, may be successfully managed with internal fixation of selected fracture sites.

Abstract
Obstetric brachial plexus palsy is a devastating birth injury. While many children recover spontaneously, 20-25% are left with a permanent impairment of the affected limb. So far, concepts of pathology and recovery have focused on the injury of the peripheral nerve. Proximal nerve injury at birth, however, leads to massive injury-induced motoneuron loss in corresponding motoneuron pools and therefore limits the extent of functional recovery. In the present study, the role of spinal cord plasticity after injury and recovery from obstetric brachial plexus lesions was investigated. A selective injury to spinal roots C5 and C6 was induced in newborn Sprague-Dawley rats, leading to motoneuron loss in corresponding motoneuron pools. Recovery of extremity function was evaluated with different behavioural paradigms. Permanent changes of adjacent motoneuron pools were quantitatively evaluated by retrograde tracing and functional muscle testing. We report that the adjacent C7 motoneuron contribution to biceps muscle innervation increased four-fold after upper trunk lesions in newborns, thus compensating for the injury-induced motoneuron loss. These results indicate that, in obstetric brachial plexus palsy, changes in spinal cord architecture are an integral part not only of primary pathology but also of the subsequent recovery process. While present treatment is directed towards the restoration of neural continuity, future treatment strategies must recognize and take advantage of CNS participation in the injury and recovery process.

Abstract
The neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion in the rat has been used as a model of schizophrenia, a human disorder associated with changes in markers of dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) circuits in various regions of the brain. We investigated whether alterations in mRNA markers related to the activity of midbrain dopaminergic and GABAergic neurons are associated with this model. We used in situ hybridization histochemistry to assess expression of mRNAs for dopamine transporter (DAT), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and glutamate decarboxylase-67 (GAD67) in the midbrain of adult rats with neonatal and adult ibotenic acid lesions of the ventral hippocampus. Neonatally lesioned rats showed in adulthood significantly reduced expression of DAT mRNA in the substantia nigra and the ventral tegmental area but no changes in the expression of TH and GAD67 mRNAs in these midbrain regions. Adult lesioned rats showed no changes in the expression of any of these genes. As the neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion reproduces many aspects of schizophrenia and is used as an animal model of this disorder, these results suggest that the reduction in DAT mRNA could result from developmental neuropathology in the ventral hippocampus and may thus represent a molecular substrate of the disease process.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Thoracic trauma occurs in newborn foals and may cause associated clinical signs; this condition remains poorly documented. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to describe the pathological features of thoracic trauma in newborn foals presented for necropsy examination between 1990 and 2000. METHODS Necropsy reports of foals with thoracic trauma from 1990-2000 were reviewed. Subject details, clinical signs, thoracic and abdominal lesions were noted and analysed statistically. RESULTS Sixty-seven (9%) of 760 necropsied foals had thoracic trauma. In 19 foals, fractured ribs were considered to be the cause of death (Group A). The remaining foals had fractured ribs (Group B, n = 20) or rib contusions (Group C, n = 28) that were incidental findings. Ribs 3 to 8 accounted for 86% of the traumatised bones. The most common site of injury was the costochondral junction and an area immediately above it (94%). In Group A, all but 2 foals died within the first 8 days postpartum. Haemothorax and subsequent pulmonary collapse was cited most commonly as the cause of death (53%). Diaphragmatic rupture and hernia (n = 2) also occurred. CONCLUSIONS The focal site, consistent location and presence of lesions during the first week post partum, all suggest that thoracic trauma in newborn foals probably occurs during parturition. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE The description of lesions and site of occurrence of thoracic trauma in foals will increase awareness and improve the diagnosis and treatment of this life threatening condition.

Abstract
Nine bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) calves that stranded in Virginia in 1996 and 1997 died of severe blunt-force trauma. Injuries were concentrated on the head and chest and multiple rib fractures, lung lacerations, and soft tissue contusions were prominent. Skeletal and/or soft tissue trauma occurred bilaterally in all of the calves. One had a bite wound across the left mandible that exhibited deep punctures consistent with the tooth placement in an adult bottlenose dolphin. The lesions were not compatible with predation, boat strike, fisheries interactions, rough-surf injury, or blast injury. However, they were similar to traumatic injuries described in stranded bottlenose dolphin calves and harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in Great Britain attributed to violent dolphin interactions. The evidence suggests that violent dolphin behavior was the cause of the trauma in the nine calves reported here and that infanticide occurs in bottlenose dolphins of the western North Atlantic.

Abstract
This study was done to determine the effects of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia on brain cell membrane function and energy metabolism during the immediate reoxygenation-reperfusion period after hypoxia-ischemia (HI). Forty-five newborn piglets were divided randomly into four experimental groups: normoxia control (NC, n=9); HI/reoxygenation-reperfusion (RR) control (HC, n=11); HI/RR hyperglycemia (HE, n=12); and HI/RR hypoglycemia (HO, n=13) group. Animals were subjected to transient HI for 30 min followed by 2 h of RR. Cerebral HI was induced by temporary but complete occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries with surgical clips and simultaneous breathing with 8% oxygen. Glucose was unregulated in HC group, and controlled by modified glucose clamp technique immediately after HI in HE (350 mg/dl) and HO (50 mg/dl) groups. During HI, heart rate, base deficit, glucose and lactate level in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid increased, and arterial pH, oxygen saturation and blood pressure decreased significantly in HC, HE and HO groups. During RR, these abnormalities returned to normal values, but lactic acidosis persisted especially in HO group. Cerebral Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity decreased, and lipid peroxidation products increased significantly in HC group than in NC group, and these abnormalities were significantly aggravated in HE, but not in HO, group. Brain ATP and phosphocreatine levels in HE group were significantly reduced compared to the corresponding values in NC, HC and HO groups. In summary, hyperglycemia, but not hypoglycemia immediately after HI interfered with the recovery of brain cell membrane function and energy metabolism. These findings suggest that post-hypoxic-ischemic hyperglycemia is not beneficial and might even be harmful in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

We used silver staining to demonstrate neuronal cell body, axonal, and terminal degeneration in brains from p7 rat pups recovered for 0, 1.5, 3, 6, 24, 48, 72 h, and 6 days following hypoxia-ischemia. We found that initial injury is evident in ipsilateral forebrain by 3 h following hypoxia-ischemia, while injury in ventral basal thalamus develops at 24 h. A secondary phase of injury occurs at 48 h in ipsilateral cortex, but not until 6 days in basal ganglia. Initial injury in striatum and cortex is necrosis, but in thalamus the neurodegeneration is primarily apoptosis. Degeneration also occurs in bilateral white matter tracts, and in synaptic terminal fields associated with apoptosis in regions remote from the primary injury. These results show that hypoxia-ischemia in the developing brain causes both early and delayed neurodegeneration in specific systems in which the morphology of neuronal death is determined by time, region, and potentially by patterns of neuronal connectivity.

Abstract
A 2-week-old Miniature Horse foal was referred for evaluation and treatment of a luxated right tarsometatarsal joint. Treatment consisted of closed reduction and internal fixation using two partially threaded Steinmann pins placed in normograde fashion through the tuber calcis into the proximal third metatarsus. Traumatic luxation has been reported to occur in the tarsocrural, proximal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints within the equine tarsus. Treatment for luxation of the distal intertarsal joint has not been documented. The treatment method most commonly suggested for tarsal luxation is closed reduction and cast immobilisation. Internal fixation using lag screws and plating has also been described. A combination of internal fixation and external coaptation is thought to achieve maximal stability and allow faster convalescence in cases of tarsal luxation. This case report describes for the first time a technique using two Steinmann pins to achieve successful internal fixation of a traumatic tarsometatarsal joint luxation in a 2-week-old Miniature Horse foal.

Abstract
The aim was to study the effects of an NMDA receptor antagonist on caspase-3 activation and DNA fragmentation after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in 7-day-old rats. Animals were treated with vehicle or MK-801 (0.5 mg/kg) directly after HI and sacrificed 8, 24 or 72h later. MK-801 reduced injury (by 53%), cells positive for active caspase-3 (by 39%) and DNA fragmentation (by 79%) in the cerebral cortex. Furthermore, MK-801 significantly decreased caspase-3 activity, and Western blots revealed a tendency towards decreased proteolytic cleavage of the caspase-3 proform. The data imply that NMDA receptors are involved in the activation of apoptotic processes in the immature brain after HI.

Abstract
Calving chain fractures are highly characteristic injuries that when treated by casting, exhibit a predictable healing pattern. By knowing how such fractures appear radiographically at 1, 2, and 3 months following injury, it is much easier to decide when the fracture has become strong enough to bear weight, thus avoiding recasting the leg. This article describes the appearance of calving chain fractures as they heal over time, and how they appear when they do not.

Abstract
The damaging effects of ear tags used to identify sheep were studied by examining the ears of sheep after slaughter in three different abattoirs and the ears of sheep on a farm. In total, 1040 ears with tags were examined. There were six types of ear tag: metal 'Ketchum' style loop tags; two-piece rigid plastic tags; 'Allflex' style flexible plastic tags with a male and female part; golf tee-shaped plastic ear tags; one-piece rigid plastic loop tags; and one-piece flexible plastic tags with a flap. The metal loop tags and plastic loop tags caused the most lesions, and the majority of the severe lesions. Ear tags placed near to the tip of the ear appeared to cause more damage. Some of the Ketchum style metal tags and two-piece rigid plastic tags appeared to be relatively new, as if recently fitted. These tags were more often associated with ear lesions, particularly moderate or severe lesions. The Allflex style flexible plastic tags caused the fewest problems, and the golf tee-shaped plastic tags also caused significantly fewer problems than the other tags.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) receptor responsitivity was investigated in adult rats that received intrastriatal (i.s.) injections of 6-OHDA (20 micrograms per striatum) on day of birth or postnatal Day 1 (Day 0/Day 1). Neonatally lesioned rats exhibited self-biting behavior and increases in stereotypic gnawing following treatment with the mixed D1/D2 receptor agonist apomorphine (0.32-3.2 mg/kg) or the D1-like receptor agonist SKF38393 (10 mg/kg). Increases in locomotor activity, rearing, and paw treading were also observed in the lesioned rats after SKF38393 (1-10 mg/kg) treatment. The incidences of the prototypical D1 receptor-mediated behaviors, grooming and abnormal perioral movements (i.e., oral dyskinesias) were not increased in the lesioned rats. However, the low dose (0.32 mg/kg) of apomorphien as well as all doses of the D2-like receptor agonist quinpirole (0.32-3.2 mg/kg) induced grooming in the lesioned rats, which was not observed in nonlesioned control rats. Autoradiographs of [3H]mazindol binding to high affinity DA uptake sites revealed an extensive loss of DA terminals in the striata of the neonatally lesioned rats. These data suggest that near-total (> or = 95%) DA depletions on Day 0/Day 1 result in long-term alterations in the functional sensitivity of DA receptors, as well as possible changes in the interactions between D1 and D2 receptors. Comparisons of these results with those seen following lesions of the early-developing DA system ("patch-selective" lesions) and lesions made at other time points will be discussed.

Abstract
Metacarpal and metatarsal fractures are usually amenable to external coaptation using a short or full limb polyurethane resinimpregnated knitted fiberglass fabric cast. The prognosis for long-term pain-free survival is excellent for closed fractures and fair to good for open fractures managed in the manner. Surviving animals generally are not lame and do not demonstrate significant limb deformity or limb shortening and generally become completely productive. Even considering the narrow profit margin involved when treating cattle with serious injuries, this method of fracture management is usually economically and technically feasible.

Abstract
This study biomechanically evaluates solid and tubular interlocking nails in bovine neonatal femurs. Paired femurs from 40 neonatal dairy calves were obtained for mechanical testing. Intact femurs and four combinations of experimentally manipulated femurs (intact or ostectomized femurs with either a solid or tubular interlocking nail) were tested in craniocaudal and lateromedial bending, eccentric axial compression, and external torsion to evaluate composite rigidity, local/gap stiffness, and load to failure (compression and torsion only). In torsional composite rigidity, femurs with tubular interlocking nails were more complaint than intact femurs or intact femurs with solid interlocking nails (P < .001). Ostectomized femurs with solid interlocking nails were similar to intact femurs with tubular interlocking nails. Within femurs with tubular interlocking nails, ostectomized femurs were more compliant than intact femurs (P < .0001). In craniocaudal and lateromedial bending rigidity, ostectomized femurs were more complaint than intact femurs, regardless of interlocking nail type (P < .001). Within ostectomized femurs, tubular interlocking nails were more complaint than solid interlocking nails in craniocaudal bending (P < .05) and there was a similar trend in lateromedial bending (P = .06). In eccentric axial compression, local/gap stiffness was significantly greater in intact femurs compared with intact femurs with solid (48% of intact bone) or tubular (45% of intact bone) interlocking nails and ostectomized femurs with solid (18% of intact bone) or tubular (11% of intact bone) interlocking nails (P < .0001). In torsional testing, local/gap stiffness was not significantly different between intact femurs and intact femurs with interlocking nails, but was significantly lower in ostectomized femurs with solid (2% of intact bone) and tubular (0.2% of intact bone) interlocking nails (P < .0001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
In a study including 477 parturitions in sows the obstetrical situation of this species is analyzed from the clinical point of view. Obstetrical interventions before consulting the veterinary clinics led to partly severe lesions of soft tissues of the genital tract in 35.5% of all primiparous and in 12.6% of all pluriparous sows. So 3.1% of all obstetrical patients had to be slaughtered due to the enormous perforating lesions in vestibular-vaginal-cervical parts of the genital tract. In 71 cases parturition could not be completed because of stress, insufficiency of the cardiovascular system or economic reasons. In general, 76% of parturitions came to an end conservatively and 24% by caesarean section. In older sows the relation was 88% vs. 13%. During the recent years the loosing-rate by completed parturition could be reduced to 3.4% after conservative obstetrical intervention and to 20.6% after caesarean section in preinjured sows by compensation of the respiratory and metabolic acidosis, stabilizing of the cardiovascular system and the supply of warmth. Possibilities to diminish total losses are discusses, concerning the large number of animals with injuries due to inappropriate conservative obstetrics as well as the intensification of intra- and postoperative supportive therapy.

Abstract
Bilateral radiographically persistent proximal third metatarsal physes and concurrent cuboidal bone immaturity were identified in a foal. Repair of a Salter type-II fracture of the left proximal third metatarsal physis was accomplished by use of lag screw fixation. A 6-day-old Arabian foal, intended for use as a show horse, was referred because of severe unilateral hind limb lameness and valgus deformity. A Salter type-II fracture of the proximal portion of the third metacarpal bone was identified radiographically and repaired by use of cancellous lag screws. The fractured limb was further supported with a modified Robert Jones bandage and fiberglass tube cast. Eight weeks after surgery, the colt was sound at a trot and had minimal valgus deformity. At this time, radiography revealed healing of the fracture and implants were removed. Six months after fracture repair, the outcome was considered successful on the basis of a desirable cosmetic result and no detectable lameness at a trot. The proximal third metatarsal physis is generally not radiographically visible in the neonate. This report describes the identification and successful repair of a fracture involving this persistent physis. Other sites of skeletal immaturity were also identified, and should be considered in the evaluation and management of unusual physeal fractures.

Abstract
A prospective study on vertebral fractures in newborn calves is described. Vertebral fractures were found in 7.0% of necropsied calves of the Danish Holstein-Friesian (SDM) and Red Danish Dairy (RDM) breeds. Cases were not found in submitted calves of the Jersey breed or beef breeds. At least in beef breeds this was probably due to the low number necropsied. The rate of vertebral fractures in SDM and RDM breeds and between males and females were similar. Most cases occurred in calves born by heifers, and manual traction force had been applied in all cases. All fractures which in most cases consisted of a simple epiphysiolysis were located at the thoraco-lumbar area, and especially the posterior epiphysis of T13 was afflicted.

Abstract
The results of karyometric and cytometric studies show that gamma-irradiation inhibits the growth and development of arcuate nucleus neurocytes of hypothalamus. The secretory function of neurocytes is also inhibited which is particularly important with regard to the formation of adenohypophysis functions as a major regulator of the adaptation response development. A radiation-induced disturbance of the latter aggravates the radiation injury to critical organs or systems of young animals thus influencing their viability.

Abstract
Rats were sham exposed or exposed perinatally to a 60-Hz electromagnetic field, 22 days in utero and the first 8 days post partum. Each of the 30 once-daily exposures was 20 h in duration. The electric component of the field was vertical 30 kV/m rms, and the magnetic field component was 100 microTG rms. Later, as adults, male rats were trained to emit an operant response when reinforced with food on a multiple, random-interval schedule. Exposed rats (N = 21) gradually came to respond at significantly lower rates than did sham-exposed controls (N = 20). This finding was confirmed and extended in a second, independently performed experiment. After a sequence including operant conditioning followed by experimental extinction of responding and then by a suspension of conditioning and finally by more than a month of reconditioning, slower rates of responding were found to persist in the adult animals. The evidence of altered behavior several months after combined, fetal-neonatal exposure to an electromagnetic field presents an interesting contrast with other findings: Field-exposed rats did not differ from sham-exposed rats in terms of body mass, physical appearance, grossly observed activity level, or incidence of disease.

Abstract
We previously reported that pretreatment with endotoxin significantly reduced acute pulmonary O2 toxicity in lambs (J. Appl. Physiol. 65: 1579-1585, 1988). One of endotoxin's many effects is to inhibit cytochrome P-450 mono-oxygenation reactions, which are believed to produce toxic O2 species. Therefore, one possible explanation for endotoxin's beneficial effect is that it inhibited P-450-mediated O2 radical production during hyperoxia. To test this hypothesis, we administered a single dose of cimetidine, a noncompetitive inhibitor of P-450 activity, to nine lambs before continuous exposure to greater than 95% O2. Compared with six control O2-exposed lambs, the cimetidine-treated O2-exposed lambs maintained normal gas exchange for a longer period of time (P less than 0.01), accumulated lung water at a slower rate (P less than 0.01), and had normal microvascular permeability after 72 h of O2 exposure. Postmortem levels of antioxidant enzymes in blood-free lung homogenate were not increased in cimetidine-treated lambs. However, the levels of oxidized glutathione were significantly lower in cimetidine-treated lambs, and the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione concentrations (GSH/GSSG ratio) was sevenfold higher than the ratio measured in control O2-exposed lambs (P less than 0.001). In four lambs, pretreatment with ranitidine (a drug chemically related to cimetidine but without P-450 inhibitory activity) had no effect either on the time course of O2 injury or on postmortem antioxidants.
