In vitro inhibition of endometrial cancer growth by a neonatal rat testicular secretory product

The ability of a neonatal testicular product to inhibit cancer cell line growth of Mullerian origin was tested in an "in vitro" system. Preliminary experiments indicated that increasing concentration of neonatal rat testicular homogenates showed increasing endometrial cancer (HEC-1) cell growth inhibition. Further investigation revealed that testes organ culture, similarly, inhibited HEC-1 cell growth. It is, therefore, concluded that neonatal rat testes elaborated a substance (or substances) which may be effective as an anti-tumor agent.

Histocompatibility profile in Chinese with ankylosing spondylitis

Using the two-step microcytotoxicity test as recommended by NIH, U.S.A., 66 Chinese of definite ankylosing spondylitis (AS), 41 their first-degree relatives, and 43 normal Chinese received HLA analysis. The positive rates of HLA-B27 of these 3 groups were 95.5%, 56.1%, and 4.7% respectively. The results indicate: (i) The positive rate of HLA-B27 in patients with AS is significantly higher than their first-degree relatives, or the normal controls. (ii) The high positive rate of HLA-B27 in Chinese with AS is similar to those of other races.

Histochemical studies on the lateral geniculate bodies and visual cortices after optic nerve ligation in the mouse

The lateral geniculate bodies and visual cortices were analysed by histochemical methods after optic nerve ligation. Changes in succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase and monoamine oxidase were evident. However, no difference in alkaline phosphatase was detected between the experimental and control mice.

Interim follow-up studies of innominate osteotomy for congenital dislocation of the hip

Innominate osteotomy alone without any adjunctive procedures was performed for congenital dislocation of the hip in 30 children. A complete follow-up study of an average of four years and nine months was obtained for 20 hips in patients. These interim results were quite gratifying. Clinical and radiologic assessments by a score system of Trevor and associates revealed that 85% of the hips that had been operated upon were functionally satisfactory. There were three cases of redislocation which were classified as resulting from technical failures.

Experimental cerebral concussion. A histochemical study

The activity of mitochondrial enzymes (succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase) and enzymes associated with blood-brain barrier function (butyrylcholinesterase and alkaline phosphatase) in the CNS of rats was studied from 5 minutes to 62 hours after cerebral concussion. There was a transient increase in succinic dehydrogenase activity during the first hour after concussion in the neurons of the structures close to the impact. The alkaline phosphatase activity, strongly positive in the walls of normal blood vessels, decreased within five minutes after concussion; it virtually disappeared in 15 minutes but returned to normal level after 62 hours. These findings are in good correlation with previous electron microscopic observations. Their significance is discussed.

Automatic leukocyte classification using cytochemically stained smears

A leukocyte classification algorithm suitable for automated differential counting has been developed for blood smears stained with a new three-component cytochemical stain which has relatively narrow absorption bands centered at 460, 540 and 640 nm, respectively. The classification procedure is the result of a pattern recognition experiment using a sample of 223 leukocytes distributed evenly over the five normal cell types. The basic data for each cell were three digital microscopic images obtained with narrow band illumination at the above central wavelengths using a TV-digitizer system interfaced to a PDP-15 computer. The classification algorithm involves a sequential decision procedure utilizing five pattern features computed from the intensity histograms of the green and blue digital images. Thus the number of arithmetic operations and the number of computer memory words necessary to perform the classification into one of the five normal white blood cell types are both proportional to n where n is the number of gray levels into which the intensity scale is divided. In this experiment, n equals 256. Comparison of our results with work of others on smears prepared with Romanowski-type stains indicates that such narrow-band, spectrally well separated cytochemical multiple stains can permit the use of algorithms which are approximately ten times faster.
