Abstract
Using renewable and biocompatible natural-based resources to construct functional biomaterials has attracted great attention in recent years. In this work, we successfully prepared a series of steroid-based cationic lipids by integrating various steroid skeletons/hydrophobes with (l-)-arginine headgroups via facile and efficient synthetic approach. The plasmid DNA (pDNA) binding affinity of the steroid-based cationic lipids, average particle sizes, surface potentials, morphologies and stability of the steroid-based cationic lipids/pDNA lipoplexes were disclosed to depend largely on the steroid skeletons. Cellular evaluation results revealed that cytotoxicity and gene transfection efficiency of the steroid-based cationic lipids in H1299 and HeLa cells strongly relied on the steroid hydrophobes. Interestingly, the steroid lipids/pDNA lipoplexes inclined to enter H1299 cells mainly through caveolae and lipid-raft mediated endocytosis pathways, and an intracellular trafficking route of “lipid-raft-mediated endocytosis→lysosome→cell nucleic localization” was accordingly proposed. The study provided possible approach for developing high-performance steroid-based lipid gene carriers, in which the cytotoxicity, gene transfection capability, endocytosis pathways, and intracellular trafficking/localization manners could be tuned/controlled by introducing proper steroid skeletons/hydrophobes. Noteworthy, among the lipids, Cho-Arg showed remarkably high gene transfection efficacy, even under high serum concentration (50% fetal bovine serum), making it an efficient gene transfection agent for practical application.

Abstract
To analyze erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) status in tumors, recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) was labeled with 99m Tc by 99m Tc-centered 1-pot synthesis, resulting in high radiochemical purity, stability, and biological activity. Both in vitro cell culture experiments and biodistribution studies of normal rats demonstrated successful EpoR targeting. The biodistribution of labeled rHuEpo in a NCI-H1975 xenograft model showed tumor accumulation (tumor-to-muscle ratio, 4.27 ± 1.77), confirming the expression of active EpoR in tumors. Thus, as a novel single positron emission computerized tomography tracer for the imaging of EpoR expression in vivo, 99m Tc-rHuEpo is effective for exploring the role of EpoR in cancer growth, metastasis and angiogenesis.

Abstract
Monitoring sulfur dioxide (SO2) derivatives in environment is of great significance due to their harmful effects to the environment and human health. In this study, a fluorescent probe (CZBT) for SO2 derivatives was prepared from 9-ethyl-9H-carbazole-3,6-dicarboxaldehyde and 2-methyl-benzothiazolium, which displayed a noticeable color change from yellow to colorless along with a remarkable fluorescence change from yellow to blue in response to HSO3-. The probe could quantitatively determine the concentration of HSO3- with excellent selectivity, high sensitivity and low limit of detection. 1H NMR and HR-MS spectra demonstrated that a selective 1, 4-nucleophilic addition occurred on the bridge double bond in CZBT. The probe was successfully used to determine the SO2 derivatives in several real water samples with good recovery. Furthermore, the probe was employed for monitoring the level of intracellular HSO3- in HeLa (human cervical cancer) cells by fluorescence imaging. These results indicated that CZBT has a good capability for monitoring SO2 derivatives in environment and living cells.

Abstract
A simple naphthalene-based fluorescent probe (AENO) for formaldehyde (FA) was successfully synthesized, which exhibited a significant fluorescence turn-on response towards FA in aqueous solution. The probe could quantitatively determine the concentration of FA (0-1.0mM) with excellent selectivity, high sensitivity and low limit of detection (0.57µM). The sensing mechanism was proposed as 2-aza-Cope rearrangement for AENO after reaction with FA, which was confirmed by (1)H NMR, HR-MS, FT-IR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. The probe has been employed to determine the FA contents in several commercially available toffee samples with satisfactory performance. Thus, AENO might be used as a promising tool for quantitative detection of FA in food. Furthermore, fluorescence imaging of HeLa cells indicated that the probe was cell membrane permeable and could be used for visualizing/imaging the FA trace/transportation in cancer cells.

Abstract
A new series of cationic block copolymers PHML-b-PMAGal and statistical copolymers P(HML-st-MAGal) with pendant natural galactose and (l-)-lysine moieties were prepared via RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer) polymerization. The block/statistical copolymers showed a high plasmid DNA binding affinity (N/P < 2) and the as-formed polyplexes were spherical nanoparticles with the average size of 100-300 nm and surface zeta potentials of +30.2 to +46.3 mV. The cytotoxicity and gene transfection efficacy of the PHML-b-PMAGal and P(HML-st-MAGal) vectors strongly depend on the polymer architectures (block/statistical) and the galactose content. Notably, the statistical copolymer P(HML40-st-MAGal4) with 4.8% galactose content showed the highest gene transfection efficiency among the synthesized cationic polymers, 6.8-fold higher than that of the "gold standard" bPEI-25k in the presence of 10% FBS (fetal bovine serum) in various cell lines. An intracellular uptake mechanism (with 10% FBS) study demonstrated that the P(HML40-st-MAGal4)/pDNA polyplexes entered H1299 cells mainly through caveolae-mediated endocytosis and microtubule-dependent endocytosis pathways. Moreover, the fluorescence imaging study showed that the P(HML40-st-MAGal4)/pDNA polyplexes possessed an obvious "lysosomal escaping" effect that led to efficient pDNA release, which might interpret the fact of the significant increase of the related gene transfection efficiency. Moreover, it could be anticipated that the P(HML40-st-MAGal4) cationic glycopolymer might be employed as a low toxic, highly efficient and serum-compatible gene carrier for practical applications.

Abstract
Developing new functional biomaterials from biocompatible natural-based resources for gene/drug delivery has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this work, we prepared a series of cationic nanoparticles (Diosarg-DOPE NPs) by assembly of a natural steroid diosgenin-based cationic lipid (Diosarg) with commercially-available helper lipid 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorethanolamine (DOPE). These cationic Diosarg-DOPE NPs were able to efficiently bind siRNA and plasmid DNA (pDNA) via electrostatic interactions to form stable, nano-sized cationic lipid nanoparticles instead of lamellar vesicles in aqueous solution. The average particle size, zeta potentials and morphologies of the siRNA and pDNA complexes of the Diosarg-DOPE NPs were examined. The in vitro cytotoxicity of NPs depends on the dose and assembly ratio of the Diosarg and DOPE. Notably, the intracellular transportation efficacy of the exogenesis siRNA and pDNA could be greatly improved by using the Diosarg-DOPE NPs as the cargoes in H1299 cell line. The results demonstrated that the self-assembled Diosarg-DOPE NPs could achieve much higher intracellular transport efficiency for siRNA or pDNA than the cationic lipid Diosarg, indicating that the synergetic effect of different functional lipid components may benefit the development of high efficiency nano-scaled gene carriers. Moreover, it could be noted that the traditional "lysosome localization" involved in the intracellular trafficking of the Diosarg and Diosarg-DOPE NPs, indicating the co-assembly of helper lipid DOPE, might not significantly affect the intracellular localization features of the cationic lipids.

Abstract
This work presents a new series of polycationic nanoparticles of (l-)-lysine conjugated amphiphilic triblock copolymer poly(hydroxyletheyl methacrylate-L-lysine)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(hydroxyletheyl methacrylate-L-lysine)s (PHML-b-PLLA-b-PHML) as potent low cytotoxic vectors for intracellular plasmid DNA delivery. First, the triblock PHML-b-PLLA-b-PHML copolymers were prepared via a combination of metal-free controlled ring opening polymerization and successive atom transfer radical polymerization. Then the cationic PHML-b-PLLA-b-PHML nanoparticles were further prepared by solution self-assembly. The particle size, zeta potential and morphology of as-prepared PHML-b-PLLA-b-PHML nanoparticles were characterized by dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The plasmid DNA binding affinities and polyplex stabilities were separately explored by agarose gel retardation and DNase I degradation assays. Then in vitro cytotoxicity and gene transfection efficiency of the PHML-b-PLLA-b-PHML nanoparticles vectors as well as relevant polyplex endocytosis pathway were investigated with H1299 cells. It was revealed that the PHML-b-PLLA-b-PHML nanoparticles exhibited low cytotoxicity, strong plasmid DNA binding affinity, high polyplex stability and efficient plasmid DNA transfection even under serum conditions (10% FBS). Moreover, the endocytosis analysis results disclosed that the PHML30-b-PLLA-b-PHML30 nanoparticle/plasmid DNA polyplexes were predominantly involved in lipid-raft-mediated endocytosis pathway, similar to that of SV40 virus-based vectors.

After unprecedented development of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells over the past few years, one of the biggest barriers towards their commercialization is the stability of the perovskite material. It is thus important to understand the interaction between the perovskite material and oxygen and/or humidity and the associated degradation process in order to improve device and encapsulation design for better durability. Here we characterize the dynamic aging process in vapour-assisted deposited (VASP) CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite thin films using advanced optical techniques, such as time-resolved photoluminescence and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Our investigation reveals that the perovskite grains grow spontaneously and the larger grains are formed at room temperature in the presence of moisture and oxygen. This crystallization process leads to a higher density of defects and a shorter carrier lifetime, specifically in the larger grains. Excitation-intensity-dependent steady-state photoluminescence shows both N2 stored and aged perovskite exhibit a super-linear increase of photoluminescence intensity with increasing excitation intensity; and the larger slope in aged sample suggests a larger density of defects is generated, consistent with time-resolved PL measurements.

Abstract
In this work, we have successfully prepared a series of new sterol-based cationic lipids (1-4) via an efficient 'Click' chemistry approach. The pDNA binding affinity of these lipids was examined by EB displacement and agarose-gel retardant assay. The average particle sizes and surface charges of the sterol-based cationic lipids/pDNA lipoplexes were analyzed by dynamic laser light scattering instrument (DLS), and the morphologies of the lipoplexes were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The cytotoxicity of the lipids were examined by MTT and LDH assay, and the gene transfection efficiencies of these lipid carriers were investigated by luciferase gene transfection assay in various cell lines. In addition, the intracellular uptake and trafficking/localization behavior of the Cy3-DNA loaded lipoplexes were preliminarily studied by fluorescence microscopy. The results demonstrated that the pDNA loading capacity, lipoplex particle size, zeta potential and morphology of the sterol lipids/pDNA lipoplexes depended largely on the molecular structure factors including sterol-skeletons and headgroups. Furthermore, the sterol-based lipids showed quite different cytotoxicity and gene transfection efficacy in A549 and HeLa cells. Interestingly, it was found that the cholesterol-bearing lipids 1 and 2 showed 7-10(4) times higher transfection capability than their lithocholate-bearing counterparts 3 and 4 in A549 and HeLa cell lines, suggested that the gene transfection capacity strongly relied on the structure of sterol skeletons. Moreover, the study on the structure-activity relationships of these sterol-based cationic lipid gene carriers provided a possible approach for developing low cytotoxic and high efficient lipid gene carriers by selecting suitable sterol hydrophobes and cationic headgroups.

Abstract
In this work, we first synthesized a ω-amino group Boc-protected poly(ω-aminohexyl methacrylamide) PAHMAA-Boc precursor via controlled reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of the Boc-AHMAA monomer in THF solution, and poly(ω-aminohexyl methacrylamide) (PAHMAA) was then prepared via Boc deprotection, and was further conjugated with (L-)-arginines at the ω-amino group sites to give a series of new (L-)-arginine conjugated PAHMAA-R7, PAHMAA-R16 and PAHMAA-R22. Employing these PAHMAA and PAHMAA-Rs as functional gene vectors, their plasmid DNA binding affinities were examined by agarose gel retardant assay. By means of dynamic light scattering (DLS), mean particle sizes and zeta potentials of the polyplexes were analyzed. Moreover, cytotoxicities of the PAHMAA and PAHMAA-Rs were evaluated by MTT and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assays with COS-7 cells, and luciferase and EGFP gene transfection efficacies by these vectors were assayed in COS-7 and HeLa cells. Furthermore, intracellular uptake of the vector/Cy3-labeled pDNA polyplexes was studied with a flow cytometer (FACS), and the most efficient PAHMAA-R16 vector was employed to investigate the endocytic gateways with various inhibitors. In addition, colocalization of the Cy3-labeled pDNA and Oregon Green labeled PAHMAA-R16 vector in the intracellular organelles of COS-7 cells was visualized on a fluorescence microscopy. As a result, it was revealed that the PAHMAA-R vectors showed lower cytotoxicities and transfection efficacies significantly higher than those of the PAHMAA, strongly depending on their percentage of arginine conjugation, and that the results of endocytic inhabitation and fluorescence colocalization in endoplasmic reticulum may suggest a caveolae-mediated efficient intracellular trafficking route for the synthesized PAHMAA-R vectors.

Abstract
In this work, we present the preparation of water-soluble poly(methacrylate)s with pendant cationic L-lysines PHMLs(6-30 K). Plasmid DNA binding affinity as well as particle sizes and zeta potentials of the polyplexes were examined for these PHML vectors, and their cytotoxicities were assayed with HeLa cells by CCK-8 and lactate dehydrogenase kits. Gene transfection efficacy and intracellular uptake of the polyplexes by the PHML vectors were also studied with HeLa cells. As a result, it was revealed that the low cytotoxic PHMLs tended to exhibit gene transfection efficiencies significantly higher than those of the linear structural PLL (15-30 K) control, in particular the molecular weight of a PHML vector remarkably influenced its pDNA binding affinity, transfection efficacy and intracellular uptake of the polyplexes.

Abstract
A rhodamine spirolactam/2-hydrazinopyridine derivative was synthesized and characterized, which exhibited high selectivity to Cu(2+) over other metal cations. The Cu(2+) recognition of this rhodamine derivative could be detected by fluorescence spectra, absorption spectra and an obvious color change which was observed easily by naked-eyes. The binding of this rhodamine derivative to Cu(2+) is instantaneous and sensitive. Moreover, a linear relationship was found between the fluorescence intensity at 575 nm from 0.5×10(-6) M to 3.0×10(-6) M of Cu(2+) concentration, and the limit of detection (LOD) was at low concentration of 2.11×10(-8) M, this would benefit for the establishment of standard working curves in practical Cu(2+) detection. Additionally, we synthesized rhodamine spirolactam/2-aminomethylpyridine derivative and rhodamine spirolactam/phenylhydrazine derivative as analogs for elucidate the structure-recognition relationships. Finally, we prepared the test strips of rhodamine spirolactam/2-hydrazinopyridine derivative for practical chromogenic the Cu(2+) detection.

Abstract
Recently, fabrication of functional porous polymer films with patterned surface structures at the scale from nanometer to micrometer has been attracting increasing interests in material science and nanobiotechnology. In this work, we present new preparation of two series of multifunctional amphiphilic copolymers and preparation of their microporous thin films on solid substrates. First, diblock dendritic poly(l-lysine)-b-poly(l-lactide)s and triblock dendritic poly(l-lysine)-b-poly(l-lactide)-b-dendritic poly(l-lysine)s (C1-C6) were synthesized through 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP)-catalyzed living ring-opening polymerization of (l-)-lactide with (l-)-lysine dendron initiators, and their structures were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Fourier-transformed mass spectra (MALDI-FTMS). Employing the breath-figure (BF) fabrication strategy, thin films of the synthesized amphiphiles (C1-C6) were drop-cast, and their surface topologies were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the effects of new amphiphile structure and drop-casting parameters of amphiphile concentration, humidity and temperature on self-assembly of ordered porous surface were studied. Furthermore, the influence of surface energy of drop-casting substrates was additionally investigated. With a human cervical epithelial carcinoma cell line (HeLa), cytotoxicity of the prepared honeycomb-structured films by new amphiphile C6 was evaluated by thiazoyl-blue-tetrazolium-bromide (MTT) assay, and HeLa cell growth behavior with microporous amphiphile films as the scaffolds was also examined. It was found that tunable micropore diameter sizes and well ordered surface topologies of BF films could be achieved for the new prepared amphiphiles, and utilization of the honeycomb-like microporous films as scaffolds indicated favorable enhancement in cell proliferation. Therefore, the honeycomb-structured films by these biocompatible multifunctional amphiphiles may provide new materials as 3D-scaffold materials for potential application in tissue engineering and regeneration.

Abstract
As a by-product originating from Salen Co(III) catalysed hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) of (±)-epichlorohydrin in the manufacturing procedure of L-Carnitine, ( R)-3-chloro-1,2-propanediol was utilised as a starting chiral material to prepare via key nitrile intermediates and by a final hydrolysis L-Carnitine. The new synthetic approach demonstrated an efficient utilisation of the by-product.

Abstract
As an effort to prepare new efficient gene delivery vectors, we have recently developed and reported an amphiphilic dendritic poly(L-lysine)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-dendritic poly(L-lysine) D(2)-PLLA-D(2) with two-generation PLL dendrons and a PLLA block. In this work, we continued to explore the roles of dendritic PLL generation in DNA binding and intracellular delivery of gene, and a new series of amphiphilic dendritic poly(L-lysine)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-dendritic poly(L-lysine)s D(n)-PLLA-D(n) (n = 3-5) were synthesized and were structurally characterized. Furthermore, plasmid DNA binding affinity for these cationic amphiphiles was examined by agarose gel electrophoresis and fluorescence titration assay in pure water and PBS buffer solution containing 150 mM NaCl (pH = 7.4), respectively. By dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), the interaction and complexation in between were investigated, concerning the DNA/vector polyplex particle morphologies and zeta potentials. Utilizing a human hepatocellular carcinoma cell-line SMMC-7721, cell toxicity, and gene transfection in vitro were explored. To further improve transgene efficiency for these synthetic cationic amphiphiles as gene delivery vectors, new structural DE(n)-PLLA-DE(n) (n = 2-3) were prepared through an amino termini modification of the D(n)-PLLA-D(n) (n = 2-3) with less toxic 4,7,10,13-tetraazatridecanoic acids, and gene transfection with these DE(n)-PLLA-DE(n) (n = 2-3) was examined with an alternative human gastric carcinoma cell-line HGC-27. As a result, the high plasmid DNA binding affinity, low cytotoxicity, and much enhanced transgene efficacy suggest a new possible clue to design effective synthetic gene delivery vectors with amphiphilic skeleton and less toxic polyamine building blocks.

Abstract
A series of novel 3-phenyl-2-ethylthio/ethylsulfinyl/ethylsulfonyl/phenylthio/ phenylsulfonyl-quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide derivatives were synthesized and screened for their cytotoxicity in vitro on human leukaemia cell line HL-60, human esophagus cancer cell line ECA-109, human prostate cancer cell line PC-3, human gastric carcinoma cell line SGC-7901, and human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 in hypoxia and in normoxia. Half of tested compounds showed higher cytotoxic activity both in hypoxia and in normoxia. The mechanism of one potent compound, 67, in hypoxia showed that the mitochondria pathway is involved in the antitumor activity of this class of compounds.

Abstract
Compound 1, a new fluorescent chemosensor signaling via significantly enhanced fluorescence when bound with cation analytes, was synthesized and characterized. This fluorescent chemosensor exhibits its selectivity to Cd2+ among a series of cations in HEPES buffer solution. Its in vitro sensitivity to Cd2+ was demonstrated in the HK-2 cell line with use of confocal microscopy. The mechanistic selectivity and sensitivity of compound 1 to Cd2+ was discussed on the basis of fluorescence, 1H NMR, and mass spectroscopic results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the expression of proliferative antigen Ki-67 and apoptosis-antagonizing protein Bcl-2 as well as their clinical significance in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). METHODS Ki-67 antigen and Bcl-2 protein were measured by immunohistochemistry on paraffin -embedded slices in 35 cases of NHL. RESULTS (1) The level of Ki-67 expression in low grade NHL was lower than that in high grade NHL (P < 0.01),while Bcl-2 expression in lower grade NHL was higher than that in high grade (P < 0.01). (2) The level of Bcl-2 expression in B cell NHL was higher than that in T cell NHL (P < 0.02), but there was no difference in the expression of Ki-67. (3) The level of Bcl-2 expression in remission group was lower than that in non-remission group after the first course of chemotherapy, but there was no significant difference in Ki-67 expression. (4) The survival time was longer in the group with Ki-67 < or = 20% than that in the group with Ki-67 > 20%, but there was no significant difference of survival time between the high and low expression group of Bcl-2. CONCLUSIONS The level of Ki-67 and Bcl-2 expression was closely related with the grade of malignant and the prognosis of NHL. They were a pair of useful markers for understanding the generation and prognosis of NHL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the ultrastructural changes of olfactory epithelium (OE) in patients suffering from dysosmia caused by chronic sinusitis. METHODS The specimens of olfactory epithelium were obtained from 35 patients operated for chronic sinusitis accompanied by dysosmia. According to the results of light microscope (LM) examination, the OE was divided into three groups by the types of pathological changes: normal, atrophic and respiratory epithelium metaplasia(REM). Transmission electron microscope was used to observe the ultrastructural changes of each group. RESULTS Under the LM, the surface ultrastructure of the OE showed some abnormal changes: (1) surface microvillus of the supporting cells disappeared; (2) olfactory vesicle changed their shape due to vacuolization; (3) disappearance of canaliculus structure in the olfactory vesicle; (4) the olfactory cilia changed the shape or reduced; some of the reduced cilia underwent metaplasia. The ultrastructural changes of atrophic OE included: (1) minor and moderate atrophy: the organelles and the membrane-limited electron dense vesicles on the upper section of the supporting cells obviously decreased or disappeared, even underwent vacuolization. The basic cell degenerated; (2) serious atrophy: the turbidity of the cell structure, even double cell structure, the nuclei of the cell aggregated as the plaque and vesiculose change or karyopyknosis. As for the cytoplasm, there were the dilation of the ERs, turgidity of the mitochondrion, the disarrangement, diminution and vacuolization. Fasciculate cilia were distributed separately in the REM group. CONCLUSION There is a positive relationship between the atrophy degree and the degree of the abnormal ultrastructural changes of the OE. The ultrastructural changes of OE in patients suffering from dysosmia caused by chronic sinusitis may provide reference for assessment of the treatment of dysosmia.

Abstract
Rhenium-186 was produced from the reaction induced by 16 MeV deuterons on isotopically enriched 186W metal powder target. Following its separation from 187W, 183Ta and the bulk of target materials 186W through an acid alumina column, the 186Re was converted to HNO3 solution through an anion exchange column, or to ammonia solution by extracting with N-235-dimethylbenzene, and finally the no-carrier-added 186Re saline solution was obtained. The radionuclidic purity of 186Re was >99.9% and the isotopic impurities were mainly 183Re (5.0 x 10(-3)%) and 184gRe (4.6 x 10(-2)%). The experimental thick-target yield of 186Re was determined to be approximately 529 microCi/microA h and the overall chemical recovery yield was > 80%.

Abstract
We retrospectively analyzed the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of 6 cases of Lyme disease from November, 1994 to December, 1998. According to our report, doxycycline, penicillin, and ceftriaxone are effective drugs for Lyme disease. The shorter the disease course is, the better the treatment effect will be. Patients in phase III usually need repeated treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To improve and to increase the awareness of pulmonary complications of AIDS. METHODS Six cases of confirmed AIDS from may 1992 to August 1997 were analyzed. RESULTS Of the six cases, there were five complicated with pneumocysitis carinii pneumonia (PCP) (in which one had PCP as the first occurred manifestation). The clinical presentations of PCP were fever(5/5), dyspnea on exertion or at rest(4/5), and hypoxemi with mean PaO2 of 58.1 mm Hg. Chest X-ray showed bilateral diffuse interstitial or alveolar infiltrates. Pulmonary tuberculosis, tuberculous lymphadenities (fast-acid staining positive but PPD negative) and bronchial fungal infection were found in three cases. CONCLUSIONS AIDS patients are at high risk of suffering from pulmonary complications, of which PCP is more common. If young pateints who were healthy in the past suddenly suffered from pneumonia and respiratory failure, PCP should be considered. When opportunistic pulmonary infections are diagnosed under special circumstances, one should be alert to the possibility of AIDS. In these cases serum HIV antibodies should be checked immediately.

To enhance the understanding of Lyme disease, a case of Lyme neuroborreliosis with acute meningitis as the presenting manifestation was reported. The diagnosis was confirmed by elevated serum antibody response to B. burgdorferi using both ELISA and Western blotting, excluding other causes of neurological abnormalities and the typical response of our patient to antibiotics. This case indicates the existence of Lyme disease in Beijing area. If the etiology of a meningitis with lymphocytic pleocytosis is not known, it is important that Lyme neuroborreliosis should be considered as one of the differential diagnoses and detection of antibody to B. burgdorferi in serum and cerebrospinal fluid performed in time. A brief review of the literature including epidemiology, clinical menifestations, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease was made.

Abstract
The technology of processing carbonized Cirsium japonicum was selected by using orthogonal experiment design. The result shows that the best way is to bake of 10 min at 220 degrees C. The contents of macro and trace elements in the prepared pieces significantly increased.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Frequent alterations of microsatellite sequence of cancer cells were found recently in a substantial fraction of human cancers including hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer. This paper aimed to investigate the genetic instability of tumor cells by using microsatellite instability(MI) as the marker in vitro. METHODS Two RER+ cell lines (replication error phenotype), RKO and HCT116 and one RER- cell line, sw480, were used as the hosts for transfection with an episomal plasmid, pCMV-CAR, containing an exogenous (CA)14 repeat which was inserted within the coding sequence of lacZ reporter gene and thus made lacZ misreading. The transfectant clones were selected and established by hygromicin. Expression and production of lacZ reporter gene of restored reading frame were detected with X-gal staining assay. RESULTS After hygromicin selection, stable pCMV-CAR transfectant clones were established. It was shown that mutation of deletion of insertion within(CA)14 occurred in the transfectant RER+ cells but not in the RER-cells. The mutation restored normal reading frame of lacZ gene, and resulted in expression and production of bio-active beta galactosidase which was detected with X-gal staining. This feature of the transfectant clones was maintained during culture passages. CONCLUSION The alterations of the exogenous(CA)14 repeat in the transfectant RER+ clones revealed genetic instability and complicated mutation status of cancer cells. It is suggested that the exogenous (CA)14 in transfectant clones could be a useful target sequence for monitoring the effects of environmental agents on MI of human cancer cells.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the relative roles of unenhanced and hepatic arterial phase (HAP) computed tomographic (CT) imaging in the detection of hypervascular liver metastases. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-four patients with biopsy-proved liver metastases from hypervascular primary tumors other than hepatocellular carcinoma underwent unenhanced and HAP and portal venous phase (PVP) helical CT studies. Three blinded radiologists evaluated each series of images separately for the number, size, and enhancement characteristics of lesions. Sixty-nine patients had follow-up imaging proof of tumor burden. RESULTS The three readers detected 381-402 lesions on the PVP images and 397-416 lesions on the unenhanced images. Unenhanced images allowed detection of 72%-80% of the lesions seen on PVP images. They detected 94-137 additional lesions on unenhanced but not PVP images. On the HAP images, 375-395 lesions were identified. HAP images allowed detection of 81%-90% of the lesions seen on PVP images. Forty-five to 78 additional lesions were detected on HAP but not on PVP images. In the 69-patient subset, maximal detection of tumor foci occurred in 94% of patients with unenhanced plus PVP images and in 78% with HAP plus PVP images. Unenhanced plus PVP images allowed detection of 96% of the 322 tumors in the subset population. CONCLUSION Unenhanced plus PVP CT images allow detection of statistically significantly more hypervascular liver metastases than do HAP plus PVP images or imaging only in the PVP.

Abstract
The absorption spectra of C60 and C70-doped in polystyrene film and in solution were studied. The experiment results showed that the positions of the absorption peaks for C60-doped in polystyrene film moved a little toward longer wavelength than in n-hexane, and regular solid material appeared while the ratio of C60-doped in the film increased; The absorption peaks for C70-doped in polystyrene film were almost in consistent with that in solution. We suggest that C60 molecules may be connected as "microcrystalline" in polystyrene film, while C70 may be exist as single molecule or particle less than C60 in it. The preliminary model for the growth of "microcrystslline" in polystyrene film has been proposed.

Abstract
We determined the prevalence and incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among hemodialysis patients and evaluate their risk factors. 80 patients on maintenance hemodialysis in Peking Union Medical College Hospital Dialysis Center from December 1994 to June 1995 were studied. 30 medical students were used as health controls. Serum samples were tested for HCV antibodies by a second-generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and for HCV RNA using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and retested for anti-HCV and HCV RNA three months later. 24 (30%) of 80 hemodialysis patients were anti-HCV positive, and 2 (3.6%) of 56 anti-HCV negative cases were found HCV RNA positive. By combined assessment, the HCV infection rate of hemodialysis patient was 32.5% (26/80). Mantel-Haenszel analysis showed that HCV infection was associated with multi-transfusions, dialysis over a long period, renal transplantation, history of operation. Samples of dialysate in 9 serum HCV RNA positive cases were directly detected for HCV RNA, and 3 were found HCV RNA detectable. HCV infection rate in hemodialysis patients is higher than that of general population. The main risk factors for HCV transmission is transfusion of unscreened blood but is not an independent factor, hemodialysis itself plays an important role, the length of time on dialysis, renal transplantation, blood-contaminated material and contaminated dialysis equipment are also the risk factors. Infected hemodialysis patients should be isolated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To further define the chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL). METHODS Tweenty cases of CLL classified after the FAB proposals (1989) were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Based on the clinical features, cell/tissue morphology, immunophenotype, IgH and TCR gamma gene rearrangement serum or urine immunoglobulin levels, 16 cases of B-lymphoid leukemia (12 of CLL, 1 of PLL, 2 of leukemia/lymphoma, and 1 of WM) as well as 4 cases of T-lymphoid leukemia (2 of leukemia/lymphoma, 1 of T-LGLL, and 1 of NK-LGLL) were identified. The diagnostic criteria,cell morphology,biological characteristics and prognosis for CLL were discussed. CONCLUSION T-leukemia/lymphoma should be incorporated in the classification of CLL.

Abstract
A cooperative prospective study on the clinical epidemiology of post-transfusion hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection was carried out from April 1993 to November 1994 in four medical schools in China, namely, Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), Western China Medical University (WCMU), Shanghai Medical University (SMU) and Beijing Medical University (BMU). A screen test on anti-HCV was done for the healthy donors of four groups. Anti-HCV positive rate was found to be 14.49% in professional blood donors, 5.60% in rural donors and 0.42% in urban volunteer donors. The positive rate of anti-HCV in blood recipients followed more than three months after transfusion was quite different in the four institutes, being 15.34% (14/91) in PUMC, 24.59% (15/61) in WCMU, 13.18% (12/91) in SMU and 1.53% (1/65) in BMU. During the same period post-transfusion hepatitis B virus infection rate decreased as compared with that in the past. It is concluded that the screen test on anti-HCV in blood donors can not completely rule out post-transfusion HCV infection.

Abstract
The introduction of ward-based clinical assessment of nursing skills in the 1970s meant a more realistic method of assessment, but still essentially a 'snapshot' of the student's practical abilities. This now being replaced by continuous clinical assessment which requires that student nurses meet the expected level of competence in a range of nursing skills in each clinical placement. Benner's (1984) model of skill acquisition is currently receiving considerable attention by nurse educationalists and is providing the framework for many curricula (English 1993). The model identifies five stages of development in nursing: novice; advanced beginner; competent; proficient; and expert. What is needed, however, is a more detailed description of what those stages mean in terms of the component parts of nursing, especially the clinical and communication skills. This paper describes a framework for the assessment of clinical and communication skills, a framework which seeks to operationalize Benner's model by defining the level of performance expected in clinical and communication skills at each stage.
