Abstract
INTRODUCTION Influenza is a common respiratory infectious disease affecting population worldwide yearly. The aim of this work is to describe the 2017-2018 influenza season and how it affected elderly population in Catalonia despite moderate vaccine coverage among this age group. METHODS Influenza surveillance based on a primary care sentinel surveillance, virological indicators systematic sampling of ILI attended and severe influenza confirmed cases (SHLCI) admitted to hospital.Analysis of data by Chi-squared, ANOVA, multiple regression and negative control test or case to case for vaccine effectiveness assessment in primary care and SHLCI respectively. RESULTS Moderate-high intensity and early onset season with predominance of influenza B virus (IVB) (63%) followed by an increase of circulation of influenza A virus (IVA). A total of 419 IV from primary care samples. Vaccine effectiveness (VE) in primary care setting was 14% (95%CI: 0-47%). 1306 severe cases (adjusted cumulative incidence 18.54/100,000 inhabitants (95%CI: 17.54-19.55)). The highest proportion of severe cases were in the >64 (65.1%) (aOR 15.70; 95%CI: 12.06-20.46; p < 0.001) followed by 45-64 yo (25.4%) (aOR 6.03; 95%CI: 4.57-7.97). VE in preventing intensive care unit (ICU) admission was 35% (95%CI: 10-54%). Final outcome death while hospitalized occurred in 175 SHLCI cases with a case fatality rate of 13.4%. CONCLUSIONS 2017-2018 influenza season was an unusual epidemic season with an early onset, great predominance of influenza B (Yamagata strain) virus with a high hospitalization rate of severe cases among elderly stressing the need to upgrade vaccine uptake in this age group.

Abstract
Synthesis, characterization and spectroscopic investigation of maslinic acid labeled with fluorescent 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin is reported. It was found that the coumarin-maslinic derivative (MaCo) forms an excellent fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) pair with the tryptophan (Trp) residue of human serum albumin (HSA). This feature allowed for monitoring HSA conformational alterations by measuring the distance between donor (Trp) and acceptor (MaCo) through Förster energy transfer mechanism. Displacement experiments confirmed that MaCo binds to subdomain IIA of HSA with independence of temperature. It was observed that, in the temperature range 35-45 °C, the fluorescence emission maximum of HSA-MaCo complex decreased, whereas in the range 45 °C-65 °C, an increment was detected. The concomitant change in the polarity of environment surrounding Trp was confirmed by red edge excitation shift experiments. Thermal denaturation of HSA was followed by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Average lifetime of Trp residue decreased with temperature due to the increment of solvent collisions and changes in the solvent exposure of Trp. To discriminate the importance of each effect, lifetime of N-Acetyl-L-tryptophanamide (NATA) at different temperatures was measured. Circular dichroism (CD) studies confirmed the loss of secondary structure of HSA with increasing temperature and showed a different trend in the conformational transformation below and above 45 °C, in agreement with steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence experiments.

Detection of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with pecan ( Caryaillinoinensis) trees by molecular and morphological approaches. MycoKeys 2018:73-88. Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal community associated with pecan (Caryaillinoinensis) roots and rhizospheric soils was assessed by spore isolation and morphological characterisation and by pyrosequencing of AM molecular markers. The AM fungal community associated with pecan growing in the field, was always more diverse than that associated with pecan growing in containers. This was not observed when AM richness was studied, suggesting that soil disturbance by a reduction in host plant richness leads to a less equitable distribution of AM fungal species, in contrast to natural soils. The chosen primers (AMV4.5F/AMDGR) for pyrosequencing showed high AM fungal specificity. Based on 97% sequence similarity, 49 operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) were obtained and, amongst these, 41 MOTUs corresponded to the Glomeromycotaphylum. The number of obtained AM sequences ranged from 2164, associated with field samples, to 5572 obtained from pecan trap pot culture samples, defining 30 and 29 MOTUs, respectively. Richness estimated by conventional species identification was 6 and 9 AM fungal species in soil and pot samples, respectively. Claroideoglomuslamellosum, Funneliformismosseae and Entrophosporainfrequens were the only taxa detected using both techniques. Predominant sequences in the pecan rhizosphere samples, such as Rhizoglomusirregulare and other less abundant (Dominikiairanica, Dominikiaindica, Sclerocystissinuosa, Paraglomuslaccatum), were detected only by pyrosequencing. Detection of AM fungal species based on spore morphology, in combination with molecular approaches, provides a more comprehensive estimate of fungal community composition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report our experience in the treatment of pectus carinatum by using the dynamic compression system. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective study during the period from January 2005 to September 2017. Patients with typical condrogladiolar pectus carinatum and correction pressure (PC) ≤ 14 PSI (pound square inch) were included. Exclusion criteria: patients with previous thoracic surgery, mixed malformations and chondromanubrial pectus carinatum. For the treatment, the Dynamic Thoracic Compressor System (FMF) with pressure meter in PSI was used. The PC, the treatment pressure (PT), the correction time (TC) and the maintenance time (TM), recurrences and complications were analyzed. A qualitative scale was measured in three grades: where A is excellent or very good, B is regular and C is bad. RESULTS We treated 104 patients under 18 years of age. The PT was 2.26. The average of the TC was 8.8 months. The TM was on average 8 months. 36.5% of the patients finished the treatment, 36.5% still continue in treatment and 26.9% of the patients lost the follow-up due to desertion. The qualitative assessment was positive in 95.5% of our patients, and unfavourable in 4.5%. CONCLUSION The non-surgical treatment of pectus carinatum is efficient, non-invasive and of low morbidity. Regarding the high dropout rate, we must analyze the variables to be modified to reduce it. This treatment should be considered as the first option to correct pectus carinatum in patients with flexible thorax.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the occurrence of abnormally elevated values of biomarkers of growth hormone (GH) action in short children on recombinant human GH (rhGH) therapy. METHODS Sixty-three prepubertal short children were examined: 31 with GH deficiency (GHD), 25 small for gestational age (SGA), and 9 with Turner syndrome (TS). The main outcomes were the following: standard deviation score (SDS) values of IGF-I, IGFBP-3, and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio before, at the 1st and at the 2nd year on rhGH and Δheight (Ht)-SDS to evaluate GH treatment efficacy (adequate 1st-year ΔHt SDS: >0.4 SDS for GHD and >0.3 SDS for non-GHD). RESULTS Seventy-eight percent of GHD, 78% of SGA and 55% of TS children had adequate 1st-year ΔHt SDS. In GHD, 88% of IGF-I SDS and IGFBP-3 SDS that were ≤-2.0 SDS at baseline normalized on treatment. Abnormal IGF-I values >+2.0 SDS were observed in 52% of SGA and in 55% of TS patients on rhGH. Within each group, the IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio increased significantly from pretreatment and throughout therapy, remaining within normal range for most patients. ΔIGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio SDS were significantly higher in children with an adequate response (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Non-GHD groups presented markedly elevated concentrations of GH biomarkers on rhGH and normal IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio in most patients. Since there is a lack of consensus regarding the molar ratio usefulness, we think that interventions towards a more physiological IGF-I serum profile should be implemented.

Abstract
Silicon on insulator photonics has offered a versatile platform for the recent development of integrated optomechanical circuits. However, there are some constraints such as the high cost of the wafers and limitation to a single physical device level. In the present work we investigate nanocrystalline silicon as an alternative material for optomechanical devices. In particular, we demonstrate that optomechanical crystal cavities fabricated of nanocrystalline silicon have optical and mechanical properties enabling non-linear dynamical behaviour and effects such as thermo-optic/free-carrier-dispersion self-pulsing, phonon lasing and chaos, all at low input laser power and with typical frequencies as high as 0.3 GHz.

Abstract
A new method to tag the barium daughter in the double-beta decay of ^{136}Xe is reported. Using the technique of single molecule fluorescent imaging (SMFI), individual barium dication (Ba^{++}) resolution at a transparent scanning surface is demonstrated. A single-step photobleach confirms the single ion interpretation. Individual ions are localized with superresolution (∼2 nm), and detected with a statistical significance of 12.9σ over backgrounds. This lays the foundation for a new and potentially background-free neutrinoless double-beta decay technology, based on SMFI coupled to high pressure xenon gas time projection chambers.

Abstract
Pepsinogen C is an aspartyl-proteinase usually involved in the digestion of proteins in the stomach, and an androgen- inducible protein in breast cancer cells. In this study we evaluated its expression and clinical significance in patients with resectable pancreatic cancer. Pepsinogen C expression was examined by immunohistochemical methods in a series of 73 pancreatic carcinomas. The prognostic value of pepsinogen C was retrospectively evaluated by multivariate analysis. A total of 21 (28.8%) pancreatic carcinomas stained positively for pepsinogen C. The percentage of pepsinogen C-positive tumors was significantly higher in well-differentiated tumors (38.3%) than in moderately differentiated (15.8%) and poorly differentiated (0%) tumors (p<0.05). In addition, statistical analysis revealed that pepsinogen C expression was associated with clinical outcome. Thus, patients with pepsinogen C-negative tumors have a poorer overall survival than those with pepsinogen C-positive tumors. Our results led us to consider that the expression of pepsinogen C may represent a useful biological marker in pancreatic cancer. Expression of this protein may be a marker of gastric-type differentiation of the tumors and it might also reflect the existence of a complete hormone receptor pathway in a subset of pancreatic carcinomas.

145 Effect of Dietary Organic Zinc Levels on Boar (Sus scrofa domesticus) Sperm DNA Fragmentation Dynamics. Reprod Fertil Dev 2018. Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is essential for the development and activity of sperm, although its cytotoxic effect on sperm has been little studied. This study evaluated the effect of organic Zn; that is, Zn-methionate (Zn-Met), on the DNA fragmentation of boar sperm. Domestic boars (York × Landrace, Sus scrofa domesticus; n = 15) were randomly allocated into 3 levels of Zn dietary concentrations: 25 (Control), 150, or 200 ppm. Sperm DNA fragmentation dynamics were evaluated over an 8-wk period after Zn-Met supplementation. The Sperm-Sus-Halomax® Kit (Halosperm SL, Madrid, Spain), a 1:1 mixture of SYBR I (10×; Invitrogen Molecular Probes, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA) in Vectashield Mounting Medium (Vector Laboratories Inc., Burlingame, CA, USA) for DNA staining, and fluorescence microscopy (Nikon Eclipse 80i; Nikon, Tokyo, Japan) were used to analyse DNA fragmentation dynamics; that is, sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) test, of the boar sperm. Samples were diluted 2:10 (v:v) in either (a) Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) extender, or (b) PBS, to determine the effects, if any, of extender. Extended sperm were stored at 15°C for 8 days for daily SCD testing. Data were analysed as a completely randomised design with repeated-measures serially in time (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Main effects of the variables (i.e. dietary Zn and extender) and their interaction were studied. Means were compared using Tukey´s test, with significance set at the <0.05 α-level. Supplementation of the diet with 200 ppm of Zn-Met had an adverse effect on the integrity of pig sperm DNA from the beginning of supplementation to the last day of the experiment (i.e. fresh ejaculate 0 h = 9.44% fragmented, motility = 79.6%). However, Control and 150 ppm Zn-Met dietary levels did not significantly affect sperm DNA integrity (i.e. fresh ejaculate 0 h = 1.43% and 1.73% fragmented and motility = 84.1% and 84.5%, respectively). With regard to the semen extenders BTS and PBS, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in sperm DNA fragmentation dynamics for the first 3 days in extender: Day 3 = 4.09 and 6.45%, respectively. However, the sperm DNA fragmentation index was different (P < 0.05) between extenders BTS and PBS based on extended sperm for Day 4: 4.28 and 7.28%, respectively, through Day 8 (5.52 and 10.02%). These results demonstrated the importance of providing the correct amount of organic Zn in boar diets and potential impacts on reproduction.

Abstract
Algae are a valuable and never-failing source of bioactive compounds. The increasing efforts to use ingredients that are as natural as possible in the formulation of innovative products has given rise to the introduction of macro and microalgae in food industry. To date, scarce information has been published about algae ingredients as antimicrobials in food. The antimicrobial potential of algae is highly dependent on: (i) type, brown algae being the most effective against foodborne bacteria; (ii) the solvent used in the extraction of bioactive compounds, ethanolic and methanolic extracts being highly effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria; and (iii) the concentration of the extract. The present paper reviews the main antimicrobial potential of algal species and their bioactive compounds in reference and real food matrices. The validation of the algae antimicrobial potential in real food matrices is still a research niche, being meat and bakery products the most studied substrates.

Abstract
The diagnosis of unresectable locally advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma (LAPC) requires confirmation, through imaging tests, of the unfeasibility of achieving a complete surgical resection, in the absence of metastatic spread. The increase in overall survival (OS), together with an appropriate symptom management is the therapeutic target in LAPC, maintaining an acceptable quality of life and, if possible, increasing the time until the appearance of metastasis. Chemoradiation (CRT) improves OS compared to best support treatment or radiotherapy (RT) but with greater toxicity. No significant increase in OS has been achieved with CRT when compared to chemotherapy (QT) alone in patients without disease progression after four months of treatment with QT. However, a significantly better local control, that is, a significant increase in the time to disease progression was associated with this approach. The greater effectiveness of the schemes FOLFIRINOX and gemcitabine (Gem) + Nab-paclitaxel compared to gemcitabine alone, has been extrapolated from metastatic disease to LAPC, representing a possible alternative for patients with good performance status (ECOG 0-1). In the absence of randomized clinical trials, Gem is the standard treatment in LAPC. If disease control is achieved after 4-6 cycles of QT, the use of CRT for consolidation can be considered an option vs QT treatment maintenance. Capecitabine has a better toxicity profile and effectiveness compared to gemcitabine as a radiosensitizer. After local progression, and without evidence of metastases, treatment with RT or CRT, in selected patients, can support to maintain the regional disease control.

Abstract
The management of patients with pancreatic cancer has advanced over the last few years. We convey a multidisciplinary group of experts in an attempt to stablish practical guidelines for the diagnoses, staging and management of these patients. This paper summarizes the main conclusions of the working group. Patients with suspected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma should be rapidly evaluated and referred to high-volume centers. Multidisciplinary supervision is critical for proper diagnoses, staging and to frame a treatment plan. Surgical resection together with chemotherapy offers the highest chance for cure in early stage disease. Patients with advanced disease should be classified in treatment groups to guide systemic treatment. New chemotherapeutic regimens have resulted in improved survival. Symptomatic management is critical in this disease. Enrollment in a clinical trial is, in general, recommended.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system. The dysregulation of the cytokine network is an important component of its pathogenesis. One of the cytokines produced by activated T-cells is osteopontin (OPN). OPN enhances the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-12 and interferon-gamma, while reducing interleukin-10 levels. Therefore, OPN is considered a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and could play a key role in MS pathogenesis. The OPN gene contains several common polymorphisms, distributed in two main haplotypes, which may modulate its production or activity. A total of 326 MS patients and 484 healthy controls were typed for 795CT OPN polymorphism. In order to perform a familial study, 51 progenitor pairs were also included. No difference was found in the case-control or family study. This negative finding is inconsistent with a previous haplotype study in an Italian population, where the haplotype associated carried the low-frequency allele in position 795. In a Japanese population, a similar study yielded no association with this polymorphism. In conclusion, our data suggest that the 795 polymorphism does not play an etiological role per se and the haplotype structure may differ from one population to another. Genetic diversity and patterns of population structure in Creole goats from the Americas. Anim Genet 2017; 48:315-329. Abstract
Biodiversity studies are more efficient when large numbers of breeds belonging to several countries are involved, as they allow for an in-depth analysis of the within- and between-breed components of genetic diversity. A set of 21 microsatellites was used to investigate the genetic composition of 24 Creole goat breeds (910 animals) from 10 countries to estimate levels of genetic variability, infer population structure and understand genetic relationships among populations across the American continent. Three commercial transboundary breeds were included in the analyses to investigate admixture with Creole goats. Overall, the genetic diversity of Creole populations (mean number of alleles = 5.82 ± 1.14, observed heterozygosity = 0.585 ± 0.074) was moderate and slightly lower than what was detected in other studies with breeds from other regions. The Bayesian clustering analysis without prior information on source populations identified 22 breed clusters. Three groups comprised more than one population, namely from Brazil (Azul and Graúna; Moxotó and Repartida) and Argentina (Long and shorthair Chilluda, Pampeana Colorada and Angora-type goat). Substructure was found in Criolla Paraguaya. When prior information on sample origin was considered, 92% of the individuals were assigned to the source population (threshold q ≥ 0.700). Creole breeds are well-differentiated entities (mean coefficient of genetic differentiation = 0.111 ± 0.048, with the exception of isolated island populations). Dilution from admixture with commercial transboundary breeds appears to be negligible. Significant levels of inbreeding were detected (inbreeding coefficient > 0 in most Creole goat populations, P < 0.05). Our results provide a broad perspective on the extant genetic diversity of Creole goats, however further studies are needed to understand whether the observed geographical patterns of population structure may reflect the mode of goat colonization in the Americas.

Forage intake, digestibility and performance of cattle, horses, sheep and goats grazing together on an improved heathland. ANIMAL PRODUCTION SCIENCE 2017. Abstract
A mixed herd of five cows, five mares, 32 ewes and 32 goats was managed with their offspring during two consecutive years in a paddock (22.3 ha) with 76% of heathlands and 24% of improved pasture area, with the aim of studying their differences in ingestive behaviour and performance. Diet composition, dry matter intake (DMI) and digestibility (DMD) were estimated on three occasions using the alkane technique, and all animals were periodically weighed to calculate bodyweight (BW) changes per livestock unit (LU). Goats selected higher proportions of shrubs than the other herbivore species (P < 0.001). Overall, daily DMI was higher (P < 0.001) in equines (218 g/kg BW0.75) than in ruminants (174, 121 and 80 g/kg BW0.75 for cattle, goats and sheep, respectively), whereas DMD was lower (P < 0.001) in equines (569 g/kg DM) compared with ruminants (733–791 g/kg DM). During the first half of the grazing season (from late April to mid-July), dams’ BW changes per LU did not differ between species. However, during late summer–autumn lower (P < 0.001) BW losses per LU were observed in sheep and goats (–89 g/day) than in cattle (–534 g/day), being intermediate in horses (–254 g/day). For the overall grazing season, ewes and goats showed greater (P = 0.056) BW gains per LU (338 g/day) than cows and mares (178 g/day). Regarding the offspring, BW gains per LU were greater (P < 0.001) in lambs (3612 g/day) than in other species. Calves presented greater gains than kids (2647 vs 1909 g/day.LU), whereas foals showed intermediate gains (2385 g/day.LU). Therefore, under these conditions of partially improved heathlands, sheep was the most productive species. However, looking at the diet selection and digestibility, goats could complement sheep or cattle herds by achieving a more efficient utilisation of heathland vegetation, and increasing overall productivity per hectare. By contrast, horses, having high levels of grass intake, compete with cattle and sheep for pasture utilisation.

International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium report, data summary of 50 countries for 2010-2015: Device-associated module. Am J Infect Control 2016; 44:1495-1504. Abstract
BACKGROUND We report the results of International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) surveillance study from January 2010-December 2015 in 703 intensive care units (ICUs) in Latin America, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific. METHODS During the 6-year study period, using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infection (DA-HAI), we collected prospective data from 861,284 patients hospitalized in INICC hospital ICUs for an aggregate of 3,506,562 days. RESULTS Although device use in INICC ICUs was similar to that reported from CDC-NHSN ICUs, DA-HAI rates were higher in the INICC ICUs: in the INICC medical-surgical ICUs, the pooled rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection, 4.1 per 1,000 central line-days, was nearly 5-fold higher than the 0.8 per 1,000 central line-days reported from comparable US ICUs, the overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia was also higher, 13.1 versus 0.9 per 1,000 ventilator-days, as was the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection, 5.07 versus 1.7 per 1,000 catheter-days. From blood cultures samples, frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas isolates to amikacin (29.87% vs 10%) and to imipenem (44.3% vs 26.1%), and of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (73.2% vs 28.8%) and to imipenem (43.27% vs 12.8%) were also higher in the INICC ICUs compared with CDC-NHSN ICUs. CONCLUSIONS Although DA-HAIs in INICC ICU patients continue to be higher than the rates reported in CDC-NSHN ICUs representing the developed world, we have observed a significant trend toward the reduction of DA-HAI rates in INICC ICUs as shown in each international report. It is INICC's main goal to continue facilitating education, training, and basic and cost-effective tools and resources, such as standardized forms and an online platform, to tackle this problem effectively and systematically.

Abstract
Nonoxidative methane dehydroaromatization (MDA: 6CH4 ↔ C6H6 + 9H2) using shape-selective Mo/zeolite catalysts is a key technology for exploitation of stranded natural gas reserves by direct conversion into transportable liquids. However, this reaction faces two major issues: The one-pass conversion is limited by thermodynamics, and the catalyst deactivates quickly through kinetically favored formation of coke. We show that integration of an electrochemical BaZrO3-based membrane exhibiting both proton and oxide ion conductivity into an MDA reactor gives rise to high aromatic yields and improved catalyst stability. These effects originate from the simultaneous extraction of hydrogen and distributed injection of oxide ions along the reactor length. Further, we demonstrate that the electrochemical co-ionic membrane reactor enables high carbon efficiencies (up to 80%) that improve the technoeconomic process viability.

Abstract
The mutagenic and cytotoxic activity of the aqueous (H2O) and ethanolic (EtOH) extracts of fruits and vegetables were studied by the Ames test and the MTT assay. A significant mutagenic activity was found for three H2O extracts of broccoli ( Brassica oleracea), carrot ( Dacus carota) and licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra) and for one EtOH extract of kiwi ( Ananas sativus ) of the nine species analyzed. The frameshift tester strain TA98 was reverted by broccoli (2.4, 4.8 and 9.6 mg/mL; p < 0.01) and carrot (9.6 mg/mL; p < 0.001) aqueous extracts and by kiwi (9.6 mg/mL; p < 0.0001) EtOH extract, whereas strain TA100 was only sensitive to the mutagens of licorice H,O extract, within the nine fruits and vegetables tested. The mutagenic response of the extracts was not altered by the presence of S9 mix. Cytotoxicity was only found for three of the nine species tested. Percentage cytotoxic ac tivities at 4.8 mg/mL in pineapple ( Actinidin diasinensis) and garlic ( Allium sativum) H,O extracts were 77 and 91 %, respectively. Licorice EtOH extract was the only one that showed a cytotoxic activity at all of the concentrations used. The percentage of cytotoxic activity of licorice extract was 63% at 0.24 mg/mL and increased with increasing concentration of licorice up to 4.8 mg/mL. Thus, licorice (EtOH) extract was the most cytotoxic of the species tested.

Abstract
Thermobacteriological studies using Bacillus stearotherrnophilus spores were carried out by heating the spores under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions followed by an isothermal period. Ex perimental data obtained after isothermal heating were analyzed using a two-step linear regression procedure and a one-step nonlinear regression method. Results obtained using both analytical tech niques were close, but the 90% interval of confidence for predictions was lower when the one-step nonlinear regression was used. These results indicated the convenience of using the one-step nonlin ear regression method to obtain thermal kinetic parameters for bacterial spores. Also, the parameters obtained by a non-isothermal program followed by an isothermal heating period were similar to those obtained after isothermal heating. Nevertheless, the joint confidence regions at 90% did not overlap, indicating that there are significant differences. The z values obtained under isothermal (7.0 °C) and non-isothermal (8.5 °C) conditions are close and characteristic for this microorganisms.

Abstract
Inactivation of prions responsible of bovine spongiform encephalytis (BSE) by heat is a major concern for the canned food industry in Europe. Experimental data of heat inactivation of prions obtained from the scientific literature have been modelled. Two models were applied to analyse the inactivation curves, the Weibull distribution model and a two-parameter empirical model. Statistical analysis of available data indicated that the Weibull frequency distribution provided the best description of non-linear survival curves. The effect of the temperature on Weibull model parameters ( a and b) was also studied. The shape parameter, b, indicates deviations from linearity in the inactivation curves, and the scale parameter, a, can be considered as a kinetic constant rate for the inactivation. The values of the b parameter were on the order of 0.15-0.2 which meant that these curves had a strong upper concavity. The a values obtained ranged from 1.8 × 10−3 to 2.3 × 10−6 for temperatures between 100 and 160°C. These results indicate that temperature has a relevant effect on the inactivation of prions, although it remains a considerable fraction of prions with infective capacity. The Weibull frequency distribution model appears as a useful and convenient model because the a parameter could allow a quantitative comparison of the inactivation of prions at different temperatures or under different conditions.

Abstract
This work overviews works published on the application of pulsed electric fields (PEF) in egg and egg derivatives, grouped by subject, and arranged chronologically in terms of the factor studied (microorganisms, quality aspects, shelf life and structural changes in gel formation properties). The inactivation of microorganisms by PEF in egg is very considerable, 3.5 decimal reductions in egg white were achieved by PEF in Salmonella enteritidis, 5.5 log reductions of Listeria innocua by means of a synergistic effect of PEF and nisin in liquid whole egg, and 5.6 log reductions of Escherichia coli in beaten fresh liquid egg by PEF treatment applied continuously or discontinuously in five steps. The shelf life of PEF-treated fresh liquid egg was extended to 4 weeks in refrigeration, and quality (colour, viscosity and sensory attributes) was not affected by PEF treatment. PEF treatment did not cause notable changes in proteins in a solution of ovalbumin and dialysed fresh egg white. However, some structural changes and functional modifications were observed in fresh egg white as a result of PEF treatment. The texture and microstructure of gels were affected by the application of PEF, and therefore PEF treatment conditions in egg white must be optimised to minimise possible modifications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) is one of the therapies directed against molecular targets in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). OBJECTIVE To evaluate the positioning, safety, and effectiveness of RIT with 90Y-Ibritumomab in NHL patients. METHOD A retrospective study was conducted on patients with NHL who received RIT with 90Y-Ibritumomab. An evaluation was made of the concordance with clinical guidelines, toxicity as rated by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE), and effectiveness was assessed based on response to treatment, overall survival (OS), and progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS RIT was requested in 26 patients, of whom 21 (11 women, mean age 56±10 years) were included in the study, with the following distribution: Follicular NHL, 67%, Mantle NHL, 14%, Diffuse large B-cell NHL, 9.5%, and Transformed NHL 9.5%. Twelve patients with refractory NHL, 7 for consolidation response, and 2 transplant conditioning, were treated. Adverse effects were observed in 71% of patients, which were usually manageable and transient, and with the most common being thrombocytopenia. At 3-4 months, overall response rate was 76.2% (71.4% complete and 4.8% partial response), and 19% had progression of disease. With a median follow up of 70 months, the OS was 96±8 months, and the PFS was 54±11 months. CONCLUSION RIT showed a moderate correlation with clinical guidelines, and is probably underused. Adverse effects were common, mild, and manageable. The data show a high complete response rate and an increase in the OS and PFS.
