Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the application of the technique of terminal branches portal vein embolization(TBPVE)for planed hepatectomy. METHODS From February 2016 to June 2016, 4 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma underwent TBPVE and liver resection in Yuebei People's Hospital (n=3) and Jiangxi Ji'an Central People's Hospital (n=1). All of them were male and were 50, 64, 39 and 47 years old respectively. All the tumors located in the right lobe. All patients had the liver function of Child-Pugh A classification and liver cirrhosis level of G2S4. The standard liver volume (SLV) were 1 291, 1 109, 1 177 and 1 242 ml and estimated future liver remnant(FLR) were 315, 347, 306 and 323 ml respectively. The puncture site of TBPVE was determined by the three-dimensional reconstruction of portal vein. Three patients were punctured in the segment Ⅵ and the other one punctured in the segment Ⅲ. CT scan was repeated 2 weeks after TBPVE and FLR and FLR/SLV were calculated. All patients underwent right hepatectomy 2 weeks after TBPVE. RESULTS On the 14(th) day after TBPVE, the FLR of 4 patients were 529, 462, 469 and 498 ml which increased 67.9%, 33.1%, 53.3% and 54.2% compared with that before TBPVE, and FLR/SLV were 41.0%, 41.7%, 39.8% and 40.1% respectively. No severe complication occurred. Right hepatectomy were performed 2 weeks after TBPVE. No inflow blood control applied during the liver resection. The mean blood loss was 950 ml and the mean operating time was 3.3 hours (ranging from 3 to 4 hours). One patient had respiratory infection and two had slight jaundice and ascites for a short period. No other complication occurred. CONCLUSION The TBPVE could induce a rapid and large FLR volume that give chances to patients with small FLR to have liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract
Objective: To research the regulation effects of Krüppel like zinc finger transcription factor 2 (KLF2) on γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) in airway epithelial cells of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: (1) Human specimen experiment: lung tissue of pulmonary lobectomy patients with lung cancer with or without COPD was collected from Department of Thoracic Surgery of Hunan Cancer Hospital from December 2008 to December 2009. The patients were divided into COPD group and control group without COPD. The levels of KLF2, γ-GCS mRNA and protein expression in lung tissues were measured by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization (ISH). Then, the correlation between KLF2 and γ-GCS mRNA and protein expression levels were analyzed, as well as the correlation between KLF2 or γ-GCS protein and smoking index, percentage of forced expiratory volume in one second to predicted value (FEV1%), percentage of forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity (FVC/FEV1). (2) Animal experiment: the primary bronchial epithelial cells of rats were extracted by enzyme digestion. After 6 hours of incubation with 10% tobacco smoke extract (TSE), cellular glutathione (GSH) was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The cells were transfected by specific inhibitor of KLF2 through the liposom, which inhibited the protein expression of KLF2. Then, the cells were divided into KB group (blank control group without any treatment), KB+ TSE group (treated with TSE), NC group (control group transfected with miRNA), NC+ TSE group (treated with miRNA and TSE), 92a group (transfected with KLF2 inhibitor), 92a+ TSE group (treated with KLF2 inhibitor transfection and TSE) based in the treatment. After that, the changes of KLF2 and γ-GCS mRNA and protein expression in the cells of each group were measured by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot method. Results: (1) Human specimen experiment: The expressions of KLF2 mRNA, protein and γ-GCS mRNA, protein in the lung tissue of COPD patients were strong positive and higher than those in control group (0.32±0.04 vs 0.19±0.03, 0.35±0.05 vs 0.22±0.03; 0.28±0.03 vs 0.16±0.03, 0.31±0.05 vs 0.21±0.03; all P<0.01). Linear correlation analysis showed that KLF2 mRNA and protein were positively correlated with γ-GCS mRNA and protein (r=0.705, 0.722; both P<0.01). The KLF2 and γ-GCS protein were positively correlated with smoking index, FEV1% and FEV1/FVC (r=0.552, 0.728, 0.670, and r=0.631, 0.727, 0.657; all P<0.01). (2) Animal experiment: The level of GSH in KB+ TSE group was significantly higher than that in KB group[(28.05±2.04) vs (7.27±0.33) nmol/mg, P<0.01]. The KLF2 mRNA, protein and γ-GCS mRNA, protein in KB+ TSE group (1.715±0.026, 1.842±0.028 and 2.117±0.067, 1.879±0.065) were higher than those in KB group (1.130±0.017, 1.177±0.033 and 1.378±0.053, 1.177±0.042; all P<0.05), and those in 92a group (0.472±0.028, 0.634±0.025 and 0.582±0.025, 0.554±0.021) were significantly lower than those in KB group, NC group (1.047±0.056, 1.092±0.045 and 1.303±0.037, 1.252±0.037), and those in TSE+ 92a group (0.262±0.017, 0.288±0.017 and 0.337±0.022, 0.321±0.022) were significantly lower than those in KB+ TSE group, 92a group and NC+ TSE group (1.576±0.036, 1.646±0.066 and 1.948±0.093, 1.843±0.078) (all P<0.05). Conclusion: KLF2 exerts antioxidative effect by regulating the expression of γ-GCS in the bronchial epithelial cells of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Abstract
A fast continuous grid scan protocol has been incorporated into the Swiss Light Source (SLS) data acquisition and analysis software suite on the macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamlines. Its combination with fast readout single-photon counting hybrid pixel array detectors (PILATUS and EIGER) allows for diffraction-based identification of crystal diffraction hotspots and the location and centering of membrane protein microcrystals in the lipid cubic phase (LCP) in in meso in situ serial crystallography plates and silicon nitride supports. Diffraction-based continuous grid scans with both still and oscillation images are supported. Examples that include a grid scan of a large (50 nl) LCP bolus and analysis of the resulting diffraction images are presented. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) complements and benefits from fast grid scanning. STXM has been demonstrated at the SLS beamline X06SA for near-zero-dose detection of protein crystals mounted on different types of sample supports at room and cryogenic temperatures. Flash-cooled crystals in nylon loops were successfully identified in differential and integrated phase images. Crystals of just 10 µm thickness were visible in integrated phase images using data collected with the EIGER detector. STXM offers a truly low-dose method for locating crystals on solid supports prior to diffraction data collection at both synchrotron microfocusing and free-electron laser X-ray facilities.

Abstract
Here, a method for presenting crystals of soluble and membrane proteins growing in the lipid cubic or sponge phase for in situ diffraction data collection at cryogenic temperatures is introduced. The method dispenses with the need for the technically demanding and inefficient crystal-harvesting step that is an integral part of the lipid cubic phase or in meso method of growing crystals. Crystals are dispersed in a bolus of mesophase sandwiched between thin plastic windows. The bolus contains tens to hundreds of crystals, visible with an in-line microscope at macromolecular crystallography synchrotron beamlines and suitably disposed for conventional or serial crystallographic data collection. Wells containing the crystal-laden boluses are removed individually from hermetically sealed glass plates in which crystallization occurs, affixed to pins on goniometer bases and excess precipitant is removed from around the mesophase. The wells are snap-cooled in liquid nitrogen, stored and shipped in Dewars, and manually or robotically mounted on a goniometer in a cryostream for diffraction data collection at 100 K, as is performed routinely with standard, loop-harvested crystals. The method is a variant on the recently introduced in meso in situ serial crystallography (IMISX) method that enables crystallographic measurements at cryogenic temperatures where crystal lifetimes are enormously enhanced whilst reducing protein consumption dramatically. The new approach has been used to generate high-resolution crystal structures of a G-protein-coupled receptor, α-helical and β-barrel transporters and an enzyme as model integral membrane proteins. Insulin and lysozyme were used as test soluble proteins. The quality of the data that can be generated by this method was attested to by performing sulfur and bromine SAD phasing with two of the test proteins.

Abstract
The relationship between androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and coronary heart disease (CHD) remains controversial. Furthermore, the majority of such studies focused on Caucasian populations, and there is still a paucity of studies among Asian populations. This population-based study aimed to investigate the relationship between ADT and CHD in an ethnic Chinese (i.e., Taiwanese) population. We used data sourced from the Taiwan 'Longitudinal Health Insurance Database'. This study included 1278 patients with prostate cancer in the study group and 1278 subjects without prostate cancer in the comparison group. Each patient was individually tracked for a 3-year period to identify those who had subsequently received a diagnosis of CHD. The results showed that the incidence rate of CHD during the 3-year follow-up period was 4.69 (95% CI: 2.99-5.48) per 100 person-years and 2.67 (95% CI: 2.15-3.27) per 100 person-years for the study and comparison cohort, respectively. The Cox proportional hazard regression showed that the hazard ratio for CHD during the 3-year follow-up period for prostate cancer patients was 1.65 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.25-2.16) compared with comparison subjects after adjusting for patients' geographic location, monthly income, urbanization level, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and stroke. However, we failed to find a significant difference in the adjusted hazard of CHD during the 3-year follow-up period between prostate cancer patients who did and those who did not receive ADT (hazard ratio = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.79-1.59). We concluded that prostate cancer but not ADT was significantly associated with CHD. In addition, a common cause of prostate cancer and coronary heart disease could exist.

Abstract
AIM Coronary artery disease is the main cause of mortality and morbidity in dialysis-dependent renal failure patients. Both the prevalence and incidence of renal failure are high in Taiwan. However, there were few reports exploring the outcome of coronary aortic bypass grafting (CABG) in these patients. The aim of this study was to determine the survival outcome and risk factors for mortality from CABG in this population. METHODS The operative, early postoperative and late results of 170 dialysis patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting from January, 2000 to January, 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Operative mortality, long-term survival, and risk factors were analyzed. RESULTS One hundred and seventeen patients (68.8%) were male, and the mean age was 61.5±10.3 years (range, 34-86 years). Follow-up was 40.3±32.1 months. Operative mortality was 8.2%. Actuarial survival, including operative mortality, was 81±3% at 1 year, 68±4% at 3 years, 58±5% at 5 years and 49±6% at 10 years, better than the natural course of dialysis-dependent renal failure patients. Age, emergent operation, postoperative ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation, postoperative intra-aortic balloon pump insertion, gastrointestinal bleeding, and left internal mammary artery graft were significant predictors of operative or long term mortality. Most causes of late death were due to infection or cardiac events. CONCLUSION CABG in dialysis patients is associated with a higher incidence of complications, but has acceptable mortality. CABG is beneficial in this population. Internal mammary artery grafting may provide more favorable long term outcomes.

Abstract
The stability and exchange interaction mechanism of a doped Zn12O12 cluster with Mn and C atoms were investigated by first-principles calculations. For the Mn-doped Zn12O12 cluster, it is identified that a superexchange interaction deriving the hybridization between the Mn 3d(2/x)-2/y and O 2p(xy) orbitals dominates the Mn(↑)-Mn(↓) antiferromagnetic coupling, although a direct exchange interaction deriving the Mn-Mn bonding is also found. In order to turn the Mn spin state in the Mn-doped Zn12O12 cluster, C doping is undertaken to change the magnetic interactions of these impurities. It is proved that the C incorporation into the Mn-doped Zn12O12 cluster destroys the short-ranged antiferromagnetic coupling, where multiple exchange interactions take over, including the direct exchange interaction and the kinetic p-d exchange interaction partially due to the geometric distortion and surface effect with dangling bonds (sp(2)-like hybrids). It is concluded that the kinetic p-d exchange interaction plays a dominant role in Mn/C-doped Zn12O12 clusters.

Benign prostatic enlargement is not associated with diabetes: a population-based study. Andrology 2015. Abstract
The association between diabetes and benign prostatic hyperplasia remains inconclusive. In this case-control study, we examined the association of diabetes with benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 in Taiwan. In total, 20 152 patients with BPE as cases and 20 152 age-matched patients without BPE were included as controls. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% CI for having been previously diagnosed with diabetes between cases and controls. We found that of the 40 304 sampled patients, 9492 (23.6%) had a history of diabetes before the index date. This mean age for the sampled patients was 65.9 with a standard deviation of 12.0 years. A Chi-squared test revealed that there was a significant difference in the prevalence of prior diabetes between cases and controls (25.3% vs. 21.8%, p < 0.001). The conditional logistic regression found that the OR of prior diabetes for cases was 1.21 (95% CI = 1.15-1.27) compared with controls. However, after adjusting for geographic region, monthly income, urbanization level, hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD), hyperlipidemia, tobacco use disorder, and obesity, the association between prior diabetes and BPE did not reach a statistically significant level (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.98-1.08). In addition, it was noteworthy that hypertension (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.20-1.31), CHD (OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.32-1.48), and hyperlipidemia (OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.24-1.36) were all significantly associated with BPE. We found that men with a diagnosis of diabetes were not significantly associated with BPE after adjusting for patient's sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Statin may induce epithelial dysfunction of the bladder urothelium. Epithelial dysfunction was proposed as one of the major potential etiologies for bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC). In this study, we examined the association between statin use and BPS/IC using a population-based study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This case-control study used the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. In total, 815 female subjects with BPS/IC and 4075 randomly selected female controls were included. We used a conditional logistic regression to compute the odds ratio (OR) for having previously used statins between cases and controls. RESULTS A conditional logistic regression analysis showed that the OR of prior statin users for cases was 1.52 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.19-1.94) compared to controls after adjusting for diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, obesity, chronic pelvic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, panic disorder, migraines, sicca syndrome, allergies, endometriosis, and asthma. Furthermore, adjusted ORs of regular and irregular statin use for cases were 1.58 (95% CI: 1.20-2.08) and 1.53 (95% CI: 1.02-2.31), respectively, compared to controls. CONCLUSION We concluded that there was an association between statin use and BPS/IC.

Abstract
The lipid cubic phase (LCP) continues to grow in popularity as a medium in which to generate crystals of membrane (and soluble) proteins for high-resolution X-ray crystallographic structure determination. To date, the PDB includes 227 records attributed to the LCP or in meso method. Among the listings are some of the highest profile membrane proteins, including the β2-adrenoreceptor-Gs protein complex that figured in the award of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Lefkowitz and Kobilka. The most successful in meso protocol to date uses glass sandwich crystallization plates. Despite their many advantages, glass plates are challenging to harvest crystals from. However, performing in situ X-ray diffraction measurements with these plates is not practical. Here, an alternative approach is described that provides many of the advantages of glass plates and is compatible with high-throughput in situ measurements. The novel in meso in situ serial crystallography (IMISX) method introduced here has been demonstrated with AlgE and PepT (alginate and peptide transporters, respectively) as model integral membrane proteins and with lysozyme as a test soluble protein. Structures were solved by molecular replacement and by experimental phasing using bromine SAD and native sulfur SAD methods to resolutions ranging from 1.8 to 2.8 Å using single-digit microgram quantities of protein. That sulfur SAD phasing worked is testament to the exceptional quality of the IMISX diffraction data. The IMISX method is compatible with readily available, inexpensive materials and equipment, is simple to implement and is compatible with high-throughput in situ serial data collection at macromolecular crystallography synchrotron beamlines worldwide. Because of its simplicity and effectiveness, the IMISX approach is likely to supplant existing in meso crystallization protocols. It should prove particularly attractive in the area of ligand screening for drug discovery and development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Smooth muscle transient receptor potential melastatin 4 (TRPM4) channels play a fundamental role in the development of the myogenic arterial constriction that is necessary for blood flow autoregulation. As TRPM4 channels are present throughout the vasculature, we investigated their potential role in non-myogenic resistance arteries using the TRPM4 inhibitor 9-phenanthrol. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Pressure and wire myography were used to assess the reactivity of rat arteries, the latter in combination with measurements of smooth muscle membrane potential. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and endothelial cell (EC) calcium changes were assessed in pressurized vessels and patch clamp measurements made in isolated ECs. KEY RESULTS The TRPM4 inhibitor 9-phenanthrol reversibly hyperpolarized mesenteric arteries to circa EK and blocked α1 -adrenoceptor-mediated vasoconstriction. Hyperpolarization was abolished and vasoconstriction re-established by damaging the endothelium. In mesenteric and cerebral artery smooth muscle, 9-phenanthrol hyperpolarization was effectively blocked by the KCa 3.1 inhibitor TRAM-34. 9-Phenanthrol did not increase mesenteric EC [Ca(2+)]i , and Na(+) substitution with N-methyl-D-glucamine only increased the muscle resting potential by 10 mV. Immunolabelling for TRPM4 was restricted to the endothelium and perivascular tissue. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS These data reveal a previously unrecognized action of the TRPM4 inhibitor 9-phenanthrol - the ability to act as an activator of EC KCa 3.1 channels. They do not indicate a functionally important role for TRPM4 channels in the reactivity of non-myogenic mesenteric arteries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We compared intestinal, hepatic, and other organ function after hepatic portal occlusion with or without dexmedetomidine administration under general anaesthesia. METHODS In this prospective, randomized double-blind investigation, 44 patients undergoing elective hepatectomy with inflow occlusion were randomized into a dexmedetomidine group or a control group. The dexmedetomidine group received an initial dexmedetomidine loading dose of 1 μg kg(-1) over 10 min followed by a maintenance dose of 0.3 μg kg(-1) h(-1). In the control group, 0.9% sodium chloride was administered. The primary outcome was serum diamine oxidase (DAO) activity reflecting intestinal injury. The secondary outcomes included variables reflecting intestinal, hepatic, kidney, and cardiopulmonary function, and biomarkers of oxidative stress and systemic inflammatory response. RESULTS DAO activity was lower in the dexmedetomidine group than in the control group at 6 and 24 h after liver reperfusion [9.77 (1.07) vs14.29 (1.43) units ml(-1), P=0.021; 9.67 (0.98) vs 13.97 (1.31) units ml(-1), P=0.017]. d-lactate acid levels were lower during 1-72 h after liver reperfusion compared with the control group (all P<0.05). Also, the intestinal injury severity grade was decreased by dexmedetomidine (P=0.038). The biomarkers reflecting liver injury increased over time, but were lower in the dexmedetomidine group (all P<0.05), while the variables reflecting cardiopulmonary and renal function showed no differences between the groups (all P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Dexmedetomidine administered perioperatively attenuates intestinal and hepatic injury in patients undergoing elective liver resection with inflow occlusion without any potential risk. Abstract
AIM Limited realworld data existed for miniparasternotomy approach with good sample size in Asian cohorts and most previous studies were eclipsed by case heterogeneity. The goal of this study was to compare safety and quality outcomes of cardiac noncoronary valve operations by miniparasternotomy and full sternotomy approaches on riskadjusted basis. METHODS From our hospital database, we retrieved the cases of non-coronary valve operations from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2012, including re-do, emergent, and combined procedures. Estimated EuroScore-II and propensity score for choosing mini-parasternotomy were adjusted for in the regression models on hospital mortality, complications (pneumonia, stroke, sepsis, etc.), and quality parameters (length of stay, ICU time, ventilator time, etc.). Non-complicated cases, defined as survival to discharge, ventilator use not over one week, and intensive care unit stay not over two weeks, were used for quality parameters. RESULTS There were 283 miniparasternotomy and 177 full sternotomy cases. EuroScore-II differed significantly (medians 2.1 vs. 4.7, p<0.001). Propensity scores for choosing miniparasternotomy were higher with lower EuroScore-II (OR=0.91 per 1%, p<0.001), aortic regurgitation (OR=2.3, p=0.005), and aortic non-mitral valve disease (OR=3.9, p<0.001). Adjusted for propensity score and EuroScore-II, mini-parasternotomy group had less pneumonia (OR=0.32, p=0.043), less sepsis (OR=0.31, p=0.045), and shorter non-complicated length of stay (coefficient=7.2 (day), p<0.001) than full sternotomy group, whereas Kaplan-Meier survival, non-complicated ICU time, non-complicated ventilator time, and 30-day mortality did not differ significantly. CONCLUSION The propensity-adjusted analysis demonstrated encouraging safety and quality outcomes for mini-parasternotomy valve operation in carefully selected patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE China is proceeding into the aging society. There are near 6 million elderly suffering senile dementia,while cognitive impairment is an important clinical feature in dementia. The factors involved in cognitive dysfunction in the middle-aged and the elderly persons were investigated. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Community dwellers and nursing home residents in Tianjin, China. SUBJECTS Total of 662 subjects(284 men and 378 women) aged 55-93. METHODS A designed questionnaire was used to collect their demographic data, information of disease and medication, and life style. Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Basic Cognitive Aptitude Tests (BCAT) software were applied to evaluate their cognitive function. Serum total homocysteine (tHcy) level was quantified by enzyme conversion method. A multiple linear stepwise regression analysis was applied to find the influencing factors of cognitive function. RESULTS The average serum tHcy concentrations was 15.95±7.29 μmol/L, while the prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHE) was 45.4%. The average serum tHcy level and prevalence of HHE were higher in men than those in women after ruling out the age differences. The mean MMSE and BCAT scores were 26.74±2.71 and 50.26±18.84 respectively. The BCAT score was negatively correlated with age and positively correlated with education. Multiple linear stepwise regression equations showed that the P value was less than 0.001, the BCAT regression equation showed that the R2=0.453. Serum tHcy concentration was negatively correlated with total scores of BCAT, digit copy, Chinese character comparison, mental arithmetic, Chinese character rotation and recall answer of mental arithmetic test. Total scores of BCAT were negatively correlated with education, inhabitancy, serum tHcy concentration and age. In addition, Chinese character rotation was correlated with tea consumption. Remembrance and recognition of dual words and nonsense figures was correlated with income level. CONCLUSIONS Hyperhomocysteinemia is associated with cognitive impairment in the middle-aged and the elderly persons in Tianjin. The BCAT scores could well represent the detailed cognitive function in elderly and negatively correlate with age, but positively correlated with education level. Serum tHcy concentration was negatively correlated with total BCAT scores.

Abstract
We have fabricated surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates based on arrays of silver nanoparticles grown on porous anodic alumina templates. Using this nanotechnology platform, label-free and high-speed detection of bacteria are achieved. SERS spectra of various bacteria including Staphylococcus Aureus (Gram-positive bacterium), Klebsiella Pneumoniae (Gram-negative bacterium), and Mycobacterium Smegmatis (Mycobacterium) were recorded. The highly reproducible SERS-based technological platform is capable of differentiating different kinds of bacteria by PCA, LDA, clustering analysis, and SVM methods, which provides promising opportunity for biosensing of clinical microbes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE 2-Methoxystypandrone (2-MS) is a naphthoquinone isolated from Polygonum cuspidatum, a Chinese herb used to treat bone diseases. Here we have determined whether 2-MS antagonised osteoclast development and bone resorption. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH RAW264.7 cells were treated with receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) ligand (RANKL) to induce differentiation into osteoclasts. RT-PCR and Western blot were used to analyse osteoclast-associated gene expression and signalling pathways. KEY RESULTS The number of multinuclear osteoclasts, actin rings and resorption pit formation were markedly inhibited by 2-MS, targeting osteoclast differentiation at an early stage and without significant cytotoxicity. The anti-resorption effect of 2-MS was accompanied by decreasing dendritic cell-specific transmembrane protein and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) mRNA expression. RANKL-increased MMP-9 gelatinolytic activity was also attenuated by concurrent, but not by subsequent addition of 2-MS. 2-MS markedly inhibited not only the RANKL-triggered nuclear translocations of NF-kappaB, c-Fos and nuclear factor of activated T cells c1 (NFATc1), but also the subsequent NFATc1 induction. Degradation of IkappaB and phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases were also suppressed. RANKL facilitated the formation of signaling complexes of tumour necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 and transforming growth factor beta-activated kinase 1 (TRAF6-TAK1), important for osteoclastogenesis and formation of such signalling complexes was prevented by 2-MS. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The anti-osteoclastogenic effects of 2-MS could reflect the block of RANKL-induced association of TRAF6-TAK1 complexes with consequent decrease of IkappaB-mediated NF-kappaB and mitogen-activated protein kinases-mediated c-Fos activation pathways and suppression of NFATc1 and other gene expression, essential for bone resorption.

Abstract
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a family of inducible enzymes that are important in carcinogen detoxification. GST-Mu class is showing the high activity towards most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) epoxide. Our objective is to clarify the expression of GST-M2 in non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) patients and to determine the role of GST-M2 in protecting against DNA damage. We detected changes in GST-M2 expression at mRNA levels with a panel of lung cell lines and clinical samples of malignant and paired adjacent non-malignant tissues from 50 patients with stage I or II non-small-cell lung carcinoma using real-time RT-PCR. Comet assay and gamma-H2AX were used to clarify whether DNA damaged was protected by GST-M2. Our data demonstrate that the expression of GST-M2 in tumor tissues is significantly lower than in paired adjacent non-malignant tissues (p=0.016). Loss of GST-M2 is closely associated with age, gender, T value, N value and cell differentiation (p<0.05) in early stage I/II patients. Downregulation of GST-M2 is mediated through aberrant hypermethylation in lung cancer cell lines. Protection against B[a]P-induced DNA damage by GST-M2 in lung cancer cells was detected by Comet assay and gamma-H2AX. In conclusion, DNA hypermethylation altered and reduced GST-M2 expression that resulted in susceptible to benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) induced DNA damage. It implies that GST-M2 reduction occurs prior to tumorigenesis.

Abstract
The endosymbiotic bacterium Buchnera provides its aphid host with essential amino acids. Buchnera is typical of intracellular symbiotic and parasitic microorganisms in having a small effective population size, which is believed to accelerate genetic drift and reduce the stability of gene products. It is hypothesized that Buchnera mitigates protein instability with an increased production of the chaperonins GroESL. In this paper, we report the expression and functional analysis of trpE, a plasmid-borne fast-evolving gene encoding the tryptophan biosynthesis enzyme anthranilate synthase. We overcame the problem of low enzyme stability by using an anthranilate synthase-deficient mutant of E. coli as the expression host and the method of genetic complementation for detection of the enzyme activity. We showed that the Buchnera anthranilate synthase was only weakly active at the temperature of 26 degrees C but became inactive at the higher temperatures of 32 degrees C and 37 degrees C and that the coexpression with chaperonin genes groESL of E. coli enhanced the function of the Buchnera enzyme. These findings are consistent with the proposed role of groESL in the Buchnera-aphid symbiosis.

OBJECTIVES To investigate whether the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) can be used to predict mortality and functional outcome in patients presenting with intracerebral haemorrhage. DESIGN Retrospective study of a prospectively collected cohort. SETTING Regional hospital, Hong Kong. PATIENTS A cohort of 359 patients presented to our hospital from 1996 to 2001 with their first-ever stroke and intracerebral haemorrhage. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The sensitivity and specificity of the NIHSS with a cut-off point of 20 in predicting mortality at 30 days and 5 years, and a favourable functional outcome at 5 years. RESULTS A total of 359 patients were available for analysis and were divided into three subgroups according to the site and the size of the haematoma. The NIHSS can predict 30-day mortality with a sensitivity of 81% [corrected] and a specificity of 90% [corrected] The NIHSS can predict 5-year mortality with a sensitivity of 57% [corrected] and a specificity of 92% [corrected] In predicting favourable functional outcomes at 5 years, the NIHSS had a sensitivity of 98% [corrected] and a specificity of 16% [corrected] CONCLUSIONS The NIHSS performed on admission can be used to predict mortality at 30 days and 5 years as well as favourable functional outcome at 5 years, all with an acceptable sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
Silymarin, a standardized extract of the milk thistle (Silybum marianum), has a long tradition as a herbal remedy, and was introduced as a hepatoprotective agent a few years ago. However, the therapeutic effects of silymarin remain undefined. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a xenobiotic used extensively to induce oxidative stress and is one of the most widely used hepatic toxins for experimental induction of liver fibrosis in the laboratory. In this study, we investigated the restoration of the CCl4-induced hepatic fibrosis by high dose of silymarin in rats. After treatment with oil (as normal group; n = 6) or CCl4 [as model (n = 7) and therapeutic (n = 7) groups] by intragastric delivery for 8 weeks for the induction of liver fibrosis, the rats in the normal and model group were administered orally normal saline four times a week for 3 weeks whilst the therapeutic group received silymarin (200 mg/kg). The histopathological changes were observed with Masson staining. The results showed that the restoration of the CCl4-induced damage of liver fibrosis in the therapeutic group was significantly increased as compared to that in the model group. Moreover, silymarin significantly decreased the elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase in serum, and also reversed the altered expressions of alpha-smooth muscle actin in liver tissue. Therefore, these findings indicated that silymarin may have the potential to increase the resolution of the CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in rats.

Abstract
The Lanyu pig is an indigenous breed from the Lanyu Islet, which is southeast of Taiwan. Two herds of Lanyu pigs were introduced from the Lanyu Islet into Taiwan in 1975 and 1980. The current population of conserved Lanyu pigs consists of only 44 animals with unknown genetic lineage. The Lanyu pig possesses a distinct maternal genetic lineage remote from Asian and European pigs. The present study aimed to understand the phylogenetic relationship among conserved Lanyu, Asian, and European type pigs based on the cytochrome b coding gene, to ascertain the maternal lineage and genetic diversity within the conserved Lanyu pigs, and to address whether genetic introgression from exotic or Formosan wild pigs had occurred in the conserved Lanyu pigs. Entire mitochondrial genomes of both types of Lanyu pig comprised 2 ribosomal RNA, 22 transfer RNA, and 13 protein-coding genes. Only 2 haplotypes of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and cytochrome b were identified in the conserved Lanyu pig herds. When maximum likelihood trees were constructed, the Type I Lanyu mitochondrial genes formed a unique clade with a large pairwise distance of both cytochrome b and the control region from Asian and European type breeds, Formosan wild pigs, and exotic breeds. Significant loss of genetic diversity of mtDNA within the conserved Lanyu pigs was demonstrated by low haplotype and nucleotide diversities, supported by Fu and Li's D* neutrality test (1.44055; P < 0.05). The mtDNA control region sequences of extant pigs in the Lanyu Islet, however, showed high haplotype and nucleotide diversity, and clustered with exotic pigs. These results indicate no maternal lineage mtD-NA gene introgression from Formosan wild pigs and introduced exotic pigs to conserved Type I Lanyu pigs, and a severe loss of heterozygosity of mtDNA in conserved Lanyu pigs. The remaining extant pigs on the Lanyu Islet have been introgressed with exotic breeds. Strategies for future conservation of native Lanyu pigs are now even more urgent and important.

Abstract
The current trend in remediating contaminated soil by acid washing is to separate the soil mass by their particles sizes prior to washing. However, there is little information about the cost-effectiveness of this practice in literature. In this research, a cadmium-contaminated agricultural field has been selected for conducting a comparative study on cadmium removal by applying the acid washing method to soil samples with and without prior particle separation. The study provides valuable information for the advancement of this method to remediate contaminated soil. The results indicate that sand particles constitute about 70% of the total soil mass but only 24% of the total cadmium. After acid washing once, less than 2% of cadmium remains; multiple washing of the sand portion is thus not cost-effective. Furthermore, after particle separation, the soil mass that needs to be washed is greatly reduced to 35%; the total cost is reduced by about one third due to the savings in the acid solution utilization and the treatment of used acid solution.

Abstract
The crystallographic and magnetic behaviors of (Tb1-xNax)MnO3-y (0<or=x<or=0.3) have been studied by neutron powder diffraction (NPD), synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Although Na+ ions have larger ionic radii than Tb3+ ions, analysis of NPD data reveals a decrease in cell volume upon Na-doping, which can be explained solely by the occurrence of oxygen deficiencies and not by the size effect. The Raman spectrum represents the variation in bond length and bond angle, which originates from the balance of ions, asymmetric structure, and defects in the system. Na-doping causes an oxygen deficiency, and consequently, a peak shift is seen in the Raman spectrum because of the structural adjustment resulting from the doping. The observed effective moments decrease with increasing x because of the replacement of Tb3+ ions by Na+ ions. The well-defined peak at approximately 45 K (labeled TMn) of the x=0.3 sample is associated with Mn spin ordering, while the magnetic responses associated with TMn are not clearly present in the x=0.15 and x=0 samples.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the outcomes after first-ever stroke, including mortality, dependence, and recurrence. DESIGN Retrospective study on a prospectively collected cohort. SETTING Regional hospital, Hong Kong. PATIENTS A cohort of 755 patients presented to our hospital from 1996 to 1998 with their first-ever stroke. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Mortality and stroke recurrence rate at 30 days, 1 year, and 5 years from the onset of the stroke. Dependence in activity of daily living at 5 years from the onset of stroke. RESULTS The mortality rate was 15.1% at 30 days, 22.5% at 1 year, and 39.7% at 5 years from the onset of the first-ever stroke. The rate of stroke recurrence was 0.9% at 30 days, 7.0% at 1 year, and 21.2% at 5 years from the onset of first-ever stroke. Among patients presenting with ischaemic strokes, 109 (20.6%) had a recurrence, of which 92 (84%) were ischaemic strokes and 17 (16%) were haemorrhagic. Among patients presenting with intracerebral haemorrhage, 25 (23.1%) had a recurrence, of which 12 (48%) were haemorrhagic strokes and 13 (52%) patients were ischaemic. After 5 years, 11% of the patients were dependent in terms of activity of daily living. CONCLUSIONS The long-term prognosis after first-ever stroke is poor--5 years after their stroke, 39.7% of patients had died and 10.7% were dependent in terms of activity of daily living; 136 (21%) who survived at least 30 days after the initial stroke, had a recurrence within 5 years.

Abstract
The effect of isovalent chemical substitution of Eu3+ into the Tb3+ sites on the magnetic and electrical properties of (Tb1-xEux)MnO3 (0 </= x </= 1.0) system has been investigated. The orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm is observed in this series of materials. An increase in Mn-O bond distance with increasing Eu content leads to improvement in the overlap between the Mn 3d and O 2p orbital thereby causing a decrease in activation energy and resistivity. Moreover, as the Eu content increases, the effective moments (mueff) are reduced linearly and an exchange coupling is observed in Tb-Tb, Tb-Eu, and Eu-Eu complexes for x = 0.1 and 0.3 samples. Both these features can be related to the substitution of bigger Eu3+ ions replacing the original Tb-Tb coupling.

Abstract
We report the first experimental demonstration of electrically controlled Solc-type optical wavelength filters and TE-TM mode converters based on Ti-diffused periodically poled lithium niobate (Ti:PPLN) waveguides. A maximum mode conversion efficiency or a peak spectral transmittance of ~99% in the telecom C-L bands was obtained from a 9-mm long, 21.5-21.8-mum multiple-grating Ti:PPLN waveguide device with a switching voltage of as low as 22 V or 0.99 Vxd(mum)/L(cm), where d is the electrode separation and L is the electrode length. The spectral range of this device can be tuned by temperature at a rate of ~0.758 nm/ degrees C.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) deficiency reduces crop yields globally. This study investigated the importance of root morphological traits, especially root hairs, in plant growth and Zn uptake. Wild-type barley (Hordeum vulgare) Pallas and its root-hairless mutant brb were grown in soil and solution culture at different levels of Zn supply for 16 d. Root morphological traits (root length, diameter, and surface area) were measured using the WinRHIZOPro Image Analysis system. In soil culture, Pallas had greater shoot dry matter, shoot Zn concentration, shoot Zn content, and Zn uptake per cm(2) root surface area than brb, primarily under zinc deficiency. Both Pallas and brb developed longer roots under Zn deficiency. Development of root hairs was not affected by plant Zn status. In solution culture, there were no significant genotypic differences in any of the parameters measured, indicating that mutation in brb does not affect growth and Zn uptake. However, both Pallas and brb developed longer and thinner roots, and root hair growth was less than in soil culture, and was not affected by plant Zn status. The better growth and greater Zn uptake of Pallas compared with brb in Zn-deficient soil can be attributed primarily to greater root surface area due to root hairs in Pallas rather than other root morphological differences.

Abstract
Four etching solutions used on support materials and two coating methods of TiO(2) were conducted to investigate the effects of catalytical preparing methods on the photocatalysis of 2,2',3,4,4',5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB congener 138). The results of XRD analyses confirmed that various etching solutions used on support substrates did not influence the characteristics of titanium(IV) oxide. The XRD patterns of crystallization for the catalysts before and after purification remained unchanged. Hydrofluoric acid used as an etching solution for the support substrates provided the best adhesion stability for the catalysts that demonstrated the highest photocatalytic efficiency for congener 138. Xenon and ultraviolet lamps were used to compare the irradiation effect on photocatalysis. The shortest half-lives of congener 138 were 7.4 and 12.2 h using xenon and UV reactors, respectively. Lower chlorinated biphenyls (lower congener numbers) were identified through the continuous dechlorination of congener 138. PCB congeners 99, 87, 66, 49, 28, 17, 9, and 7 were detected as a result of dechlorination from higher chlorinated congeners to lower chlorinated congeners along with the extension of exposure times. The concentrations of chloride ion were increased with increasing exposure time through dechlorination, while the concentrations of organic chlorine of congener 138 were decreased. Meta-dechlorination was the most commonly found mechanism for the photocatalysis of PCB 138. The activation energy of the photocatalysis of congener 138 was 70.8 kJ mol(-1).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) levels have been related to clinical outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. Though statin treatment might reduce serum MMPs the change of levels after statin withdrawal remains obscure. MATERIALS AND METHOD Sixty-one consecutive hypercholesterolaemic patients whose lipid profiles had been well controlled by regular simvastatin (20 mg day(-1)) treatment for more than 6 months were enrolled. Statin was discontinued after their lipid profiles reached the treatment goal of the ATP-III guideline. The lipid profiles, serum MMP-2, MMP-3 and MMP-9, tissue inhibitor of MMP and highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels were measured on the day of simvastatin withdrawal and 120 days later. A further 50 hyperlipidaemia patients who had never received statin treatment (positive control group) and 28 healthy patients with normal lipid profiles (negative control group) were also studied as control groups. RESULTS While the lipid profiles had been normalized, the levels of serum inflammatory markers were still higher in hypercholesterolaemic patients than in the healthy subjects. Up to 120 days after statin withdrawal there was no coronary event, but the lipid profiles and serum hsCRP levels had significantly rebounded in study patients. However, serum MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels remained unchanged and the MMP-3 level was even further reduced after statin withdrawal (115.04 +/- 84.54 vs. 92.71 +/- 66.71 ng mL(-1), P = 0.022). Moreover, the amplitudes of variation (%) of each parameter including MMPs, TIMP, hsCRP and lipid profiles after statin withdrawal were inversely correlated to their respective baseline levels before withdrawal (r = -0.702 to -0.284; P < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The effects of short-term discontinuation of statin were different on serum hsCRP and MMPs levels in hypercholesterolaemic patients. While lipid profiles and serum hsCRP level had rebounded the serum MMPs levels were still unchanged, or even reduced, suggesting the prolonged effect of statin treatment, especially on serum MMP-3 level up to 120 days after simvastatin withdrawal. Further work is required to clarify the situation both in terms of these serum markers and clinical effects.

Abstract
The reaction of the simplest cyanopolyyne, cyanoacetylene [HCCCN(X (1)Sigma(+))], with ground-state atomic carbon C((3)P) is investigated theoretically to explore the probable routes for the depletion of the famed interstellar molecule HCCCN, and the formation of carbon-nitrogen-bearing species in extraterrestrial environments particularly of ultralow temperature. Six collision complexes (c1-c6) without entrance barrier as a result of the carbon atom addition to the pi systems of HCCCN are located. The optimized geometries and harmonic frequencies of the intermediates, transition states, and products along the isomerization and dissociation pathways of each collision complex are obtained by utilizing the unrestricted B3YLP6-311G(d,p) level of theory, and the corresponding CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ energies are calculated. Subsequently, with the facilitation of Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) and variational RRKM rate constants at collision energy of 0-10 kcal/mol, the most probable paths for the titled reaction are determined, and the product yields are estimated. Five collision complexes (c1-c3, c5, and c6) are predicted to give the same products, a chained CCCCN (p2)+H, via the linear and most stable intermediate, HCCCCN (i2), while collision complex c4 is likely to dissociate back to C+HCCCN. The study suggests that this class of reaction is an important route to the destruction of cyanoacetylene and cyanopolyynes in general, and to the synthesis of linear carbon-chained nitriles at the temperature as low as 10 K to be incorporated in future chemical models of interstellar clouds.

Abstract
This study explores the effect of several enhancing methods, namely acid wash pretreatment, ultrasound treatment and addition of nickel catalyst on the nitrate removal efficiency of three zero-valent metals--iron, aluminium and zinc. It is hoped that by learning about the major reaction pathways of nitrate removal with zero-valent metals and the main factors influencing the reactivity of those zero-valent metals, optimum process conditions may be identified. The study results show that direct transfer of electrons is the major reaction pathway. Thus increasing a clean, fresh metal surface and decreasing the thickness of the diffusion layer to accelerate mass transfer are the main determinants of reaction rate. In the absence of a clean, fresh metal surface, the catalytic reaction of nickel becomes the primary removal pathway.

Abstract
Recently we established a simple, effective antisense strategy using a double subgenomic Sindbis (dsSIN) virus expression system to study gene function in mosquitoes. In this study, we further elucidate the effects of antisense nucleotide number and duration of viral infection on mosquito gene silencing efficiency by the dsSIN virus expression system. Over 15 days post virus infection, the degree of parasite melanization was progressively reduced by more than 95%, 75% and 55% in the mosquito Armigeres subalbatus transduced with 600, 147 or 36 bases antisense RNA, targeted to the highly conserved copper binding region of the Ar. subalbatus prophenoloxidase I gene (As-pro-POI), respectively. As the duration of viral infection increased from day 3-15, the degree of parasite melanization progressively decreased in all mosquitoes transduced with antisense RNA, irrespective of the lengths of antisense RNA. Progressive loss of parasite melanization function was found to correlate with down regulation of As-pro-PO expression at both the mRNA and protein activity levels, and reductions in virus titres in mosquitoes transduced with antisense RNA. A small pro-PO RNA (c. twenty-five nucleotides) was identified in mosquitoes transduced with antisense RNA. These data suggest that As-pro-POI gene expression is knocked down by degrading the As-pro-POI mRNA through the RNAi pathway. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that even a short antisense RNA (thirty-six bases) can cause silencing of the As-pro-POI gene, and the effects of endogenous gene silencing by dsSIN expression system on mosquito gene functions can be accumulative.

Abstract
Although Asian people have the lowest incidence and mortality rates of prostate cancer in the world, these rates have risen rapidly in the past two decades in most Asian countries. Prostate cancer has become one of the leading male cancers in some Asian countries. In 2000, the age-adjusted incidence was over 10 per 100000 men in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Israel. Although some of the increases may result from enhanced detection, much of the increased incidence may be associated with westernization of the lifestyle, with increasing obesity and increased consumption of fat. The differences in incidences between native Americans and Asian immigrants are getting smaller, reflecting a possible improvement of diagnostic efforts and changes of environmental risk factors in Asian immigrants. Nevertheless, the huge variations in incidences among ethnic groups imply that there are important genetic risk factors. The stage distributions of prostate cancer in Asian populations are still unfavorable compared to those of Western developed countries. However, a trend towards diagnosing cancer with more favorable prognosis is seen in most Asian countries. Both genetic and environmental risk factors responsible for elevated risks in Asian people are being identified, which may help to reduce prostate cancer incidence in a chemopreventive setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To issue guidelines for the care of acute stroke in Hong Kong, with the target audience of all health care professionals who are involved in acute stroke care. PARTICIPANTS The Hong Kong Neurological Society and the Hong Kong Stroke Society. EVIDENCE The panel applied the 'rule of evidence' used by the United States Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. When there is insufficient evidence, the recommendation was based on customary practice and was circulated among the members and fellows of the two societies before coming to a consensus. CONSENSUS PROCESS Group meetings were held in 2002 to review the literature about acute care for patients with ischaemic stroke and to issue a consensus statement with reference to the local health care system. Participants of the meetings were appointed by the councils of The Hong Kong Neurological Society and the Hong Kong Stroke Society. The draft statement was circulated among the members and fellows of the two societies for comments before it was finalized. CONCLUSIONS Ischaemic stroke is a heavy health care burden to Hong Kong. The current consensus statement provides a framework to establish a multidisciplinary approach towards its acute management.

Abstract
The repair activities and the reaction mechanisms of two phenylpropanoid glycosides (PPGs), isolated from a herb used in Chinese folk medicine, towards the oxidizing hydroxyl radical adduct of poly G were studied with a pulse radiolytic technique. On pulse irradiation of a nitrous oxide saturated 4 mM aqueous solution of poly G containing one of the tested compounds, the transient absorption spectrum of the hydroxyl radical adduct of poly G decays with the formation of that of the phenoxyl radical of the tested compound within several tens microseconds after the electron pulse irradiation. The results indicated that there was a repair reaction between the hydroxyl radical adduct of poly G and the compounds tested. The rate constants for the repair reactions of poly G hydroxyl radical adducts by verbasicoside and cistanoside C were determined to be 1.4 and 1.0 x 10(9) M(-1) x s(-1), respectively.

Abstract
Equilibrium, creep, and dynamic behaviors of agarose gels (2.0-14.8%) in confined compression were investigated in this study. The hydraulic permeabilities of gels were determined by curve-fitting creep data to the biphasic model (J. Biomech. Eng. 102 (1980) 73) and found to be similar in value to those published in the literature (AIChE J. 42 (1996) 1220). A new relationship between intrinsic permeability and volume fraction of water was found for agarose gel, capable of predicting deformation-dependent permeabilities of bovine articular cartilage and 2% agarose gel published in literature. This relationship is accurate for gels and cartilage over a wide range of permeabilities (four orders of magnitude variation). The dynamic stiffness of the gels increases with gel concentration and loading frequency (0.01-1.0Hz). The increase in dynamic stiffness with loading frequency is less pronounced for gels with higher concentrations. The results of this study provide a new insight into deformation-dependent permeability behavior of agarose gel and cartilage, and are important for understanding biological responses of cells to interstitial fluid flow in gel or in cartilage under dynamic mechanical loading.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Genetic analyses have identified the HLA-Cw6 allele as the major risk allele for psoriasis in many racial groups. However, by serological typing, HLA-Cw6 is not considered a risk factor in Chinese psoriatics. There are several susceptibility genes for psoriasis residing in chromosome 6p near the HLA-C locus, including the corneodesmosin (CDSN) gene, the octamer transcription factor-3 (POU5F1) gene, the major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related gene A (MICA), and the gene for tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. However, the information about their role in psoriasis in Chinese patients is limited. OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine whether Cw6 and the genetic polymorphism of the CDSN gene, POU5F1 gene, MICA gene and the gene for TNF-alpha promoter region were associated with an increased risk of psoriasis in Chinese patients. METHODS We conducted a case-control association study in 105 Chinese patients with psoriasis vulgaris and 160 control subjects of similar ages. Genotypes of Cw6, the CDSN gene, the POU5F1 gene, and the gene for the TNF-alpha promoter region were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by restriction enzyme digestion. Genotyping of MICA was determined by PCR combined with fluorescent-based automated fragment detection technology. Results The allele frequencies showed no differences between patients and controls for the POU5F1 gene, MICA gene and the gene for TNF-alpha promoter region. The frequency of the HLA-Cw6 allele in the psoriasis group was significantly higher than that in the control group (18.6% vs. 6.56%, P < 0.00005). For the CDSN gene, patients were more likely to have C allele at position +619 (P = 0.006) and C allele at position +1243 (P = 0.007), but the significance disappeared after correction for multiple testing (Pc > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS HLA-Cw6 remains the most significant susceptibility gene in Chinese patients with psoriasis. However, the role of the CDSN gene in the pathogenesis of psoriasis deserves further scrutiny.

Abstract
Adsorption-desorption of copper (Cu2+) at contaminated levels in two red soils was investigated. The red soil derived from the Quaternary red earths (clayey, kaolinitic thermic plinthite Aquult) (REQ) adsorbed more Cu2+ than the red soil developed on the Arenaceous rock (clayey, mixed siliceous thermic typic Dystrochrept) (RAR). The maximum adsorption values (M(A)) that are obtained from the simple Langmuir model were 25.90 and 20.17 mmol Cu2+ kg(-1) soil, respectively, for REQ and RAR. Adsorption of Cu2+ decreased soil pH, by 0.8 unit for the REQ soil and 0.6 unit for the RAR soil at the highest loadings. The number of protons released per Cu2+ adsorbed increased sigmoidally with increasing initial Cu2+ concentration for the RAR soil, but the relationship was almost linear for the REQ soil. The RAR soil released about 2.57 moles of proton per mole of Cu2+ adsorbed at the highest Cu2+ loading and the corresponding value for the REQ soil was 1.12. The distribution coefficient (Kd) decreased exponentially with increasing Cu2+ loading. Most of the adsorbed Cu2+ in the soils was readily desorbed in the NH4Ac. After five successive extractions with 1 mol L(-1) NH4Ac (p 5.0), 61 to 95% of the total adsorbed Cu2+ in the RAR soil was desorbed and the corresponding value for the REQ soil was 85 to 92%, indicating that the RAR soil had a greater affinity for Cu2+ than the REQ soil at low levels of adsorbed Cu2+.

Abstract
Mosquito-borne dengue (DEN) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses are the leading causes of arthropod-transmitted viral disease in humans. A licensed tetravalent vaccine that provides effective, long-term immunity against all four serotypes of DEN virus is needed, but is currently unavailable. Improvements to currently available JE vaccines are also needed. Past and recent strategies for the development of new DEN and JE vaccines include inactivated and live attenuated viruses, engineered viruses and chimeric viruses derived from infectious cDNA clones of DEN or JE virus, recombinant poxviruses, recombinant baculoviruses, protein expression in Escherichia coli, and naked DNA vaccines. This report summarizes some of the recent developments in DEN and JE vaccinology, particularly vaccine strategies that involve live attenuated viruses, engineered viruses derived from infectious cDNA clones, and naked DNA vaccines.

Abstract
A laboratory incubation study was conducted to evaluate the effect of bensulfuron-methyl treatment on soil microbial biomass and N-mineralization of a loamy sand soil. The herbicide was applied at 0 (control), 0.01 (field rate), 0.1, and 1.0 microg g(-1), and soil microbial biomass carbon (C(mb)), soil microbial biomass nitrogen (N(mb)), and N-mineralization rate (k) were measured at different times after herbicide treatment. Compared to the untreated soil, C(mb) and N(mb) decreased significantly (p < or = 0.05) within the first 7 days after herbicide treatment at 0.1 and 1.0 microg g(-1), and the impact was greater for N(mb) than for C(mb). Nitrogen mineralization was significantly suppressed during the first 5 days of incubation when the soil was treated with bensulfuron-methyl at 0.1 and 1.0 microg g(-1). The overall impact of bensulfuron-methyl to the soil microbial communities was closely related to the application rate in the range of 0.01-1.0 microg g(-1). This effect, however, was found to be transitory, and significant impact occurred only at high application rates.

Abstract
Chest wall abscess is a rare manifestation of childhood tuberculosis. We report a case of a tuberculous chest wall abscess in a 4-year-old healthy girl who had received Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination at birth. She developed a localized anterior chest wall mass, which was initially mistaken for enchondroma on the chest radiograph. Pathologic examination of the biopsy specimen revealed chronic granulomatous inflammation and positive acid-fast staining, which confirmed the diagnosis of chest wall tuberculosis infection. She received a 12-month course of anti-tuberculous treatment and was perfectly well 1 year later. The chest wall lesion resolved without the need for surgery. In conclusion, tuberculosis should be excluded in children with undiagnosed chest wall lesions, especially in endemic areas, even if they have been vaccinated with BCG. Adequate anti-tuberculosis treatment can result in a complete recovery.
