CT appearance of appendicitis and its local complications

During evaluation for occult fever or nonspecific abdominal pain CT will occasionally identify inflammatory disease of the appendix as the underlying cause. In these cases CT may also provide useful information about the presence of associated mesenteric inflammation, abscess, or perforation. Five cases are presented in which CT provided clinically useful information supplementing that gained from barium studies and clinical presentation. When a periappendiceal lesion is found, the extent and nature of inflammatory changes are shown directly rather than inferentially.

Analysis of sera from ovarian cancer patients for immune complexes

In contrast to other malignancies, circulating immune complexes (CICS) are usually not detected by conventional assays in the sera of ovarian cancer patients. However, a polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation assay has been reported to detect putative CICS in ovarian cancer. To determine if CICS were indeed present, we analyzed sera from 12 women with ovarian cancer. All were negative for CICS by the Raji cell assay; 5 (42%) were positive by the PEG assay. However, the PEG precipitate did not possess characteristics of immune complexes. IgG in sera or in the precipitate sedimented in sucrose gradients solely at the same rate as 7S monomeric IgG. In addition, the precipitates were not able to activate the complement system and the four IgG subclasses were present in the same relative concentration as that found in normal serum. The results suggest that it is probably a misnomer to label the material detected in ovarian cancer sera by the PEG precipitation assay as CICS. Instead a non-immune interaction of IgG with other components, possibly membrane fragments, is probably being measured.

Formation of proinsulin by immobilized Bacillus subtilis

There has been an increasing interest in the use of immobilized cells for the production of pharmaceuticals as well as for products such as high fructose syrup or ethanol. Some of these compounds are now produced on an industrial scale whereby the cells are used in a resting or growing state or in a nonviable form as natural carriers of the enzyme(s) involved in the synthesis. The advantages of immobilized cell technology should also apply to microorganisms modified by recombinant DNA techniques to produce a variety of eukaryotic proteins such as hormones. We describe here the properties of immobilized Bacillus subtilis cells carrying plasmids encoding rat proinsulin. Cell proliferation normally coupled to DNA replication is undesirable in immobilized cell systems as "clogging' of the system occurs due to cells growing outside the beads. Therefore, different ways were investigated to inhibit cell division while allowing continued protein synthesis. We found that the addition of certain antibiotics in the growth medium, such as novobiocin which inhibits DNA replication, fulfills these requirements, allowing proinsulin synthesis and excretion to take place over a period of several days.

Dynamic changes in the epidemiology of canicola fever in Israel. Natural adaptation of an established serotype to a new reservoir host

Investigation of human leptospirosis caused by the serotype canicola revealed a significant shift in the chain of infection of this disease. The adaptation of an old and well-established serotype to a new and abundant host, the Norway rat, provides a new means for spreading and transferring canicola fever to man and farm animals. The changes in the epidemiology of leptospirosis described should serve as a warning to epidemiologists responsible for suggesting proper prophylactic measures.

Danazol: an antigonadotropic agent in the treatment of pelvic endometriosis

Danazol, an antigonadotropic agent, was administered in a dosage of 800 mg. daily for six months to 32 patients with pelvic endometriosis. Twenty-eight patients (87.5 per cent) were found to have a marked improvement of both clinical and subjective symptoms of endometriosis. Furthermore, Danazol was found to be effective in three patients with chronic cystic mastitis and one patient with fibrocystic disease. There was no change in uterine size in two patients with uterine adenomyosis and one patient with uterine myomas during the treatment period. Danazol was ineffective in relieving the symptoms of the menopausal syndrome in one patient. The main side effects of Danazol treatment were weight gain and water retention which were maximal at four months of treatment and then decreased. Other side effects such as acne, oiliness of skin, and voice change were rare in this series. Danazol therapy was found to be very effective in this study for the treatment of pelvic endometriosis, and the drug was well tolerated by the patients.
