Abstract
OBJECTIVES Kidney transplantation (KT) is an important renal replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The incidence of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is relatively higher in Taiwan. According to our institutional database, early onset of post-KT UTUC is not uncommon. Early detection of post-KT UTUC is an important issue to improve oncologic outcome. Because painless hematuria is a common symptom for UTUC, this study analyzes whether using hematuria as post-KT UTUC screening delayed cancer diagnosis or not. METHODS From 2005 to 2012, 128 ESRD patients were found to have UTUCs. There were 28 patients who underwent KT and were regularly followed up at our institution. All the patients underwent standard nephroureterectomy. RESULTS In ESRD patients with UTUC, the post-KT group revealed significantly less gross hematuria and microscopic hematuria at presentation compared with the non-KT group (43% versus 76%, P = .001 and 64% versus 86%, P = .011). For those patients with gross hematuria, non-organ-confined UTUC occurred more in the post-KT group compared with the non-KT group (42% versus 12%, P = .009). For those patients with microscopic hematuria, non-organ-confined UTUC occurred more in the post-KT group compared with the non-KT group with borderline significance (33% versus 16%, P = .085). CONCLUSIONS According to our observation, using gross or microscopic hematuria as detection of post-KT UTUC is associated with delayed diagnosis of cancer occurrence. Closer upper urinary tract image study such as sonography may help earlier cancer screening.

Abstract
Ginsenoside Rg1 (G-Rg1) is an active ingredient of Panax ginseng, which has previously been reported to attenuate alcohol-induced hepatic damage; however, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of G-Rg1 on alcohol-induced cell injury in vitro and on a rat model of alcoholic hepatitis in vivo. For the in vitro model, L-O2 cells were incubated with ethanol in the presence or absence of G-Rg1. For the in vivo model, rats were administered ethanol by intragastric injection and were treated with G-Rg1, or dexamethasone as a control. The results indicated that serum biochemical parameters, including alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and total bilirubin, as well as the expression of nuclear factor (NF)-κB pathway-associated inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor-α and IL-1β, were elevated in response to alcohol; however, they were significantly decreased by G-Rg1 treatment. Furthermore, NF-κB pathway activation was reduced by treatment with G-Rg1. G-Rg1 also decreased oxidative stress by inhibiting cytochrome P450 2E1 expression and reactive oxygen species production, and promoting glutathione peroxidase expression. Furthermore, G-Rg1 inhibited the expression levels of caspase-3 and -8, which may be associated with decreased hepatocyte apoptosis. These data suggested that G-Rg1 may protect hepatocytes against alcohol-induced injury, through preventing excessive inflammation and hepatocellular apoptosis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a task set based on personalized material for nostalgic experience, which could detect cognitive ability via a virtual experience system combined with Kinect somatosensory interactive operation applications without the user wearing any accessory input device. Fifty-nine subjects participated in the experiment. The receiver operating characteristic curve of the game system was statistically analyzed for determining the best cutoff-point in the cognitive function assessment. Correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to explore the correlations between the results and the clinical cognitive assessment scales. According to the MoCA scores, the results showed that the accuracy of the system was 86.4% in evaluating mild cognitive impairment. The system seems feasible and was strongly correlated with clinical cognitive assessment scales. We anticipate that daily use of our system could keep track of changes of cognitive function of the elderly in home life.

Abstract
Objective: Pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma (pNEC) is a highly malignant tumor. This study aimed to evaluate the role of surgery and the prognosis for patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma (pNEC). Methods: We collected and reviewed all clinical data of patients who underwent radical surgery for pNEC from Jan 2000 through Jan 2016 in our hospital. Cox-regression analysis wasused to evaluate the factors potentially influencing survival. Results: Twenty patients including 11 males and 9 females (median age, 62.5 years) were included in this study. All patients underwent radical surgery and 17 cases received postoperative platinum-based chemotherapy. The median follow-up time was 41 months (range, 1 to 127 months). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates of the patients were 66.7%, 51.5% and 28.1%, with a median survival time of 75.3 months. The multivariate analysis indicated that tumor size and Ki-67 index were of prognostic significance. Conclusions: Pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare but increasing in incidence. Patients with localized nonmetastatic primary tumors seem to benefit from surgery. Early diagnosis and multimodality therapy are key points of an improved survival.

Abstract
MAX-phase Cr2AlC containing thin films were synthesized by magnetron sputtering in an industrial system. Nanometre-scale 3D defects are observed near the boundary between regions of Cr2AlC and of the disordered solid solution (CrAl)xCy. Shrinkage of the Cr-Cr interplanar distance and elongation of the Cr-Al distance in the vicinity of the defects are detected using transmission electron microscopy. The here observed deformation surrounding the defects was described using density functional theory by comparing the DOS of bulk Cr2AlC with the DOS of a strained and unstrained Cr2AlC(0001) surface. From the partial density of states analysis, it can be learned that Cr-C bonds are stronger than Cr-Al bonds in bulk Cr2AlC. Upon Cr2AlC(0001) surface formation, both bonds are weakened. While the Cr-C bonds recover their bulk strength as Cr2AlC(0001) is strained, the Cr-Al bonds experience only a partial recovery, still being weaker than their bulk counterparts. Hence, the strain induced bond strengthening in Cr2AlC(0001) is larger for Cr d – C p bonds than for Cr d – Al p bonds. The here observed changes in bonding due to the formation of a strained surface are consistent with the experimentally observed elongation of the Cr-Al distance in the vicinity of nm-scale 3D defects in Cr2AlC thin films.

Abstract
Iron-based nanoparticles form the basis for a host of sustainable alternative technologies based on this earth-abundant, low-toxicity element that can adopt a variety of oxidation states, crystal phases, and functions. Control of size, shape, and phase stability is a challenge for many nano-iron-based technologies, especially those involving Fe0 that is susceptible to oxidation under ambient conditions. This article presents a continuous method for hybridizing Fe-based nanoparticles with carbon in the form of graphene-encapsulated Fe-based particles with core-shell symmetry that allows flexible control of iron particle size, shape, and phase stability. The method uses FeOOH nanorods and graphene oxide as precursors, and subjects them to an aerosol-phase microdroplet drying and annealing process to yield a range of Fe/C nanohybrids whose structure can be controlled through adjustment of aerosol process temperature and post-synthesis thermal treatment conditions. We demonstrate that FeOOH nanorods can be successfully encapsulated in graphene, and transform during annealing into encapsulated Fe3O4 or Fe0 nanoparticles by reductive fragmentation, where the graphene nanosack acts as a carbothermic reductant. The hybrids are characterized by vibrating sample magnetometry and Cr(VI) reduction rates in aqueous media. The Fe0-graphene hybrids show high activity, good stability, and good recyclability in aqueous Cr(VI) removal due to the effect of graphene encapsulation. The present work suggests this rapid and continuous synthesis method can produce stable Fe-based materials, and can be extended to other metal systems, where graphene encapsulation can induce in situ reduction of metal oxide precursors into zero-valent metal-graphene hybrids.

Abstract
Human endogenous retrovirus W family (HERV-W) envelope (env) is known to be associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. Previous studies showed that overexpression of HERV-W env could induce brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene expression. In human and rat cells, BDNF-mediated signal transduction might be modulated by glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β). Both BDNF and GSK3β are schizophrenia-related genes. In this paper, we investigated whether GSK3β was involved in the HERV-W env-induced expression of BDNF. We found that HERV-W env increased phosphorylation of GSK3β at Ser9 (p-GSK3β (Ser9)) and the ratio of p-GSK3β (Ser9) to total GSK3β (p<0.05) in U251 cells. Overexpression of HERV-W env led to a 36.2% reduction in GSK3β activity compared to control (p<0.05). The levels of β-catenin, cyclin D1 and TSC2 mRNAs were upregulated (p<0.05). These data suggested that overexpression of HERV-W env might activate the GSK3β signaling pathway in U251 cells. Further, knockdown of GSK3β reduced the expression of total GSK3β, p-GSK3β (Ser9), and the ratio of p-GSK3β (Ser9) to total GSK3β by 28.6%, 50.4%, and 30.2%, respectively (p<0.05). Levels of β-catenin, cyclin D1 and TSC2 mRNAs were also reduced (p<0.05). Interestingly, GSK3β activity increased (p<0.05). Knockdown of GSK3β also decreased mRNA and protein expression of BDNF by 49.9% and 48.5% respectively (p<0.05). These results indicated that phosphorylation of GSK3β at Ser9 might be involved in HERV-W env-induced BDNF expression, and will hopefully improve our understanding of the role of HERV-W env in neurological and psychiatric diseases (schizophrenia, etc).

Abstract
We evaluated the clinical significance and explored the prognostic value of serum endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 (ESM-1) expression in colorectal cancer (CRC) in a Chinese population. Serum samples were obtained from 89 CRC patients undergoing surgical treatment and 90 healthy volunteers (control group). ESM-1 levels in serum samples from CRC patients and controls were measured using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Overall survival was analyzed by the log-rank test, and survival curves were plotted according to the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate Cox regression was performed on each clinical covariate to examine its influence on patient survival. Final multivariate models were based on step-wise addition. Serum ESM-1 expression levels were significantly higher in patients with CRC (66.81 ± 22.97 pg/mL) than in healthy volunteers (31.50 ± 16.81 pg/mL, P = 0.012). Expression levels of ESM-1 in CRC patients were significantly correlated with histological differentiation (P = 0.004), TNM stage (P = 0.007), depth of tumor invasion (P = 0.02), and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival curves revealed that the overall survival was significantly lower in patients with high ESM-1 levels than in those with low levels (29.43 vs 61.20%, P = 0.0166). Multivariate analysis confirmed that the hazard risk of death was significantly higher in patients with high serum ESM-1 expression compared with low expression (hazard risk = 4.09, 95% confidence interval: 2.27-10.88, P < 0.001). Detection of ESM-1 levels in the serum may serve as a tumor biomarker for assessing prognosis in CRC.

Abstract
Indium segregation in a narrow InGaN single quantum well creates quantum dot (QD) like exciton localization centers. Cross-section transmission electron microscopy reveals varying shapes and lateral sizes in the range ∼1-5 nm of the QD-like features, while scanning near field optical microscopy demonstrates a highly inhomogeneous spatial distribution of optically active individual localization centers. Microphotoluminescence spectroscopy confirms the spectrally inhomogeneous distribution of localization centers, in which the exciton and the biexciton related emissions from single centers of varying geometry could be identified by means of excitation power dependencies. Interestingly, the biexciton binding energy (E(b)xx) was found to vary from center to center, between 3 to -22 meV, in correlation with the exciton emission energy. Negative binding energies are only justified by a three-dimensional quantum confinement, which confirms QD-like properties of the localization centers. The observed energy correlation is proposed to be understood as variations of the lateral extension of the confinement potential, which would yield smaller values of E(b)xx for reduced lateral extension and higher exciton emission energy. The proposed relation between lateral extension and E(b)xx is further supported by the exciton and the biexciton recombination lifetimes of a single QD, which suggest a lateral extension of merely ∼3 nm for a QD with strongly negative E(b)xx = -15.5 meV.

Abstract
Intriguing functionalities at nano-sized domain walls have recently spawned a new paradigm for developing novel nanoelectronics due to versatile characteristics. In this study, we explore a new scenario to modulate the local conduction of ferroic domain walls. Three controlling parameters, i.e., external electrical field, magnetic field and light, are introduced to the 90° domain walls (90° DWs) of BiFeO₃. Electrical modulation is realized by electrical transport, where the mobility of 90° DWs can be altered by gating voltage. We further use the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic coupling to reveal the inherent magnetism at the DWs. With an established magnetic nature, magnetotransport has been conducted to introduce magnetic controlling parameter, where a giant positive magnetoresistance change can be observed up to 200%. In addition, light modulated conduction, a core factor for multifunctional applications, is successfully demonstrated (current enhancement by a factor of 2 with 11 W white lamp). These results offer new insights to discover the tunability of domain wall nanoelectronics.

Abstract
Our objective was to examine the genetic diversity of central and peripheral populations of Toona ciliata var. pubescens, to elucidate whether the central-peripheral hypothesis applies to these populations. We analyzed 392 individuals from nine natural populations using eight pairs of polymorphic SSR primers. The results showed that the mean numbers of observed and expected alleles in peripheral populations were higher than in central populations. Common widespread and rare local (RL) alleles were observed in all populations. However, common local alleles were found in five populations and rare widespread alleles were only found in three. The total numbers of the four types of alleles were higher in peripheral than in central populations, and the quantity of the RL allele was obviously higher in the peripheral populations than in the central populations. Both the observed and expected heterozygosities were higher in peripheral populations compared with the central populations. The coefficient of gene differentiation of the peripheral populations was 0.3045, which was significantly higher than that of the central populations. The gene flow between central populations was greater than one, but less than one between peripheral populations. This indicates that frequent gene flow exists between central populations, while terrain and habitat fragmentation prevent gene flow between peripheral populations. A Mantel test indicated that there was no relationship between genetic and geographical distance of T. ciliata var. pubescens.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To propose an original method of benchmarking regions based on their prevalence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and to identify regions with unusual results. DESIGN To study between-region variability with a three-level hierarchical logistic regression model and a Bayesian non-parametric method. SETTING French 2006 national HAIs point prevalence survey. PARTICIPANTS A total of 336 858 patients from 2289 healthcare facilities in 27 regions. Patients with an imported HAI (1% of the data, 20.7% of infected patients), facilities with <5 patients and patients who had at least one missing value for the variables taken into account were excluded (5.0% of patients). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Binary outcome variable indicates whether a given patient was infected. RESULTS Two clusters of regions were identified: one cluster of five regions had a lower adjusted prevalence than the other one of 22 regions, while no region with unusually high prevalence could be identified. Nevertheless, the degree of heterogeneity of odds ratios between facilities for facility-specific effects of use of invasive devices was more important in some regions than in others. CONCLUSIONS The adjusted regional prevalence of HAIs can serve as an adequate benchmark to identify regions with concerning results. Although no outlier regions were identified, the proposed approach could be applied to the data of the 2012 national survey to benchmark regional healthcare policies. The estimation of facility-specific effects of use of invasive devices may orient future regional action plans.

Abstract
Numerous studies have shown that human endogenous retrovirus W family (HERV-W) envelope gene (env) is related to various diseases but the underlying mechanism has remained poorly understood. Our previous study showed that there was abnormal expression of HERV-W env in sera of patients with schizophrenia. In this paper, we reported that overexpression of the HERV-W env elevated the levels of small conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channel protein 3 (SK3) in human neuroblastoma cells. Using a luciferase reporter system and RNA interference method, we found that functional cAMP response element site was required for the expression of SK3 triggered by HERV-W env. In addition, it was also found that the SK3 channel was activated by HERV-W env. Further study indicated that cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) was required for the activation of the SK3 channel. Thus, a novel signaling mechanism of how HERV-W env influences neuronal activity and contributes to mental illnesses such as schizophrenia was proposed.

Abstract
The complex structural transformation in crystals under static pressure or shock loading has been a subject of long-standing interest to materials scientists and physicists. The polymorphic transformation is of particular importance for iron (Fe), due to its technological and sociological significance in the development of human civilization, as well as its prominent presence in the earth's core. The martensitic transformation α→ε (bcc→hcp) in iron under shock-loading, due to its reversible and transient nature, requires non-trivial detective work to uncover its occurrence. Here we reveal refined microstructural fingerprints, needle-like colonies and three sets of {112}<111> twins with a threefold symmetry, with tell-tale features that are indicative of two sequential martensitic transformations in the reversible α→ε phase transition, even though no ε is retained in the post-shock samples. The signature orientation relationships are consistent with previously-proposed transformation mechanisms, and the unique microstructural fingerprints enable a quantitative assessment of the volume fraction transformed.

Abstract
Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) were planted in pots to remediate pyrene contaminated quartz sand (as a control group), alluvial and red soils amended with and without compost. The pyrene degradation percentages in quartz sand, alluvial soil, and red soil amended with compost (5%, w/w) and planted with ryegrass and alfalfa for 90 d growth were 98-99% and 97-99%, respectively, while those of pyrene in the corresponding treatments amended without compost but planted with ryegrass and alfalfa were 91-96% and 58-89%, respectively. Further, those of pyrene in the respective treatments amended with and without compost but unplanted were 54-77% and 51-63%, respectively. Pyrene contents in both roots and aboveground parts of ryegrass and alfalfa after 90 d growth in quartz sand and the two soils amended with or without compost were trace amounts. Statistical analyses for the parameters of ryegrass planted in red and alluvial soils including the concentrations of total water-soluble volatile low molecular weight organic acids, microbial population, pyrene degradation percentage, and spiked pyrene concentration show significant correlations at 5% and mostly 1% probability levels, by the analysis of variance. It was thus suggested that the interactions among the consortia of plant root exudates, microorganisms, and amended compost in rhizosphere soils could facilitate bioavailability of pyrene and subsequently enhance its dissipation.

Abstract
The cancer-testis antigen, NY-ESO-1, has been engineered into a bacterial expression plasmid which incorporates a His6-tag. The plasmid was transfected into E. coli strain BL21 and Master and Working cell banks generated from this expression system. Three 15-litre fermentations were performed under cGMP (code of Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions and the crude NY-ESO-1 tagged protein isolated as solubilised inclusion bodies. A three-step cGMP chromatography process (immobilised metal affinity, anion exchange, and hydrophobic interaction) was utilised to purify the protein. The purified NY-ESO-1 is being used in early stage human cancer vaccine trials in Australia and the U.S.A.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To construct and express recombinant plasmid pET28a-Sj26GST of Schistosoma japonicum (Sj) in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). METHODS The total RNA was extracted from Sj adult worms by ultrasound-breaking. The Sj26GST antigen gene was amplified by RT-PCR from the total RNA, and then cloned into prokaryotic expression plasmid pET28alpha and transformed into E. coli BL2 (DE3). The BL21(pET28a-Sj26GST) was induced with isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranosid (IPTG), and the expressed products were analyzed and identified with SDS-PAGE and Western blot. RESULTS The 676 bp Sj26GST gene was successfully amplified by RT-PCR and cloned into pET28alpha. The recombinant plasmid pET28a-Sj26GST was successfully constructed, with a relative molecular weight of expressed recombinant protein at approximately 36 x 10(3) as determined by SDS-PAGE. The amount of the expressed protein comprised 26% of the total bacterial proteins. The fusion protein could be recognized by the sera of rabbits infected with Sj. CONCLUSION The recombinant plasmid pET28alpha-Sj26GST is successfully constructed and highly expressed in E. coli in a fused form with His-tag. The expressed fusion protein shows specific antigenicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To dynamically observe changes of subsets of splenocytes in mice immunized with recombinant Bifidobacteria bifidum (Bb)-Eg95-EgA31 vaccine of Echinococcus granulosus (Eg). METHODS BALB/c mice were vaccinated by 5 x 10(8) colony forming unit (CFU) orally and 5 x 10(5) CFU intranasally respectively. Mice were killed on week 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 after immunization respectively, and spleens were separated for cell preparation. CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were determined by flow cytometry (FCM), with MRS as control. RESULTS In the oral immunization group, CD4+ cells showed a significant increase during the 4th-10th week after vaccination, and reached the highest level on the 6th week, whereas no obvious changes in CD8+ cells numbers were observed. In the intranasal immunization group, CD4+ cells showed an obvious increase during the 4th-8th week after vaccination, and reached the highest level on the 6th week, CD8+ subsets had no obvious changes. CONCLUSION CD4+ T cell cells may play a key role in immune response in mice immunized with the recombinant Bb-Eg95-EgA31 vaccine of Echinococcus granulosus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the level of cytokines in spleen from mice immunized with recombinant Bifidobacteria bifidum(Bb)-Eg95-EgA31 vaccine of Echinococcus granulosus (Eg) and challenged with Eg protoscoleces. METHODS 56 female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into 7 groups: Recombinant Bb-Eg9S-95-EgA31 vaccine subcutaneous injection (group A), intramuscular injection (B), intranasal immunization (C), oral administration (D), blank vector control (E), Bb control (F) and MRS control (G). Mice in all groups were challenged with 50 Eg protoscoleces on the 8th week after vaccination and sacrificed on the 25th week after infection. Spleens were collected to prepare splenocytes, which were cultured under activation of crude Eg antigen (EgAg), with concanavalin A (ConA) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation and non-stimulation as control. The splenocyte supernatants were collected to determine the levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), interleukin-12 (IL-12), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and IL-10 by ELISA. RESULTS The level of IFN-gamma in groups A [(137.5 +/- 23.2) pg/ml], B [(162.5 +/- 23.2) pg/ml], C [(250.0 +/- 53.5) pg/ml] and D [(215.0 +/- 37.4) pg/ml] was higher than that of group G [(50.0 +/- 10.7) pg/ml] (P < 0.01). The level of IL-12 in groups A [(27.5 +/- 4.6) pg/ml], B [(32.5 +/- 4.6) pg/ml], C [(45.0 +/- 5.4) pg/ml] and D [(35.0 +/- 5.4) pg/ml] was higher than that of group G [(15.0 +/- 5.4) pg/ml] (P < 0.01). The level of TNF-alpha in groups A [(275.0 +/- 46.3) pg/ml], B [(325.0 +/- 46.3) pg/ml], C [(450.0 +/- 53.5) pg/ml] and D [(350.0 +/- 53.5) pg/ml] was higher than that of group G [(150.0 +/- 53.5) pg/ml] (P < 0.01). The level of IL-10 in groups A [(37.5 +/- 4.6) pg/ml], B [(35.0 +/- 5.4) pg/ml], C [(25.0 +/- 5.4) pg/ml] and D [(32.5 +/- 4.6) pg/ml] was lower than that of group G [(45.0 +/- 5.4) pg/ml] (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). CONCLUSION The recombinant Bb-Eg95-EgA31 vaccine can induce a protective Th1 type immune response in mice
