Abstract
Cockroaches have been identified as one of the major indoor allergens inducing perennial rhinitis and asthma. Per a 1s are a group of the major allergens from American cockroach. Although Per a 1s are major allergens from American cockroach, factors contributing to the allergenicity of Per a 1s are still poorly defined. To investigate the effects of Per a 1s on the expression of PARs and the release of proinflammatory cytokines from mast cells. Per a 1.0101 and Per a 1.0104 were cloned from American cockroach and then expressed in Eschericia coli. The purified allergens were used to stimulate P815 mast cells, and the expression of protease-activated receptors (PARs) was determined by real-time RT-PCR and flow cytometry. The levels of IL-4 and IL-13 in culture media were detected with ELISA. Sera from 80 and 77.3% of cockroach allergy patients reacted to recombinant Per a (rPer a) 1.0101 and rPer a 1.0104, confirming they are major allergens. Both rPer a 1.0101 and rPer a 1.0104 had no enzymatic activity, but rPer a 1.0101 upregulated the expression of PAR-1 and PAR-2, and rPer a 1.0104 enhanced the expression of PAR-1 and PAR-4 proteins. Both recombinant allergens were able to increase the release of IL-4 and IL-13 from P815 mast cells. This is the first study aiming to investigate functions of group 1 allergens of American cockroach. rPer a 1.0101 and rPer a 1.0104 have the capacity to upregulate the expression of PARs and to enhance Th2 cytokine production in mast cells.

Abstract
A theoretical investigation of a nano-scale hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a low-index as well as high-index gain medium is presented. The present hybrid plasmonic waveguide structure consists of a Si substrate, a buffer layer, a high-index dielectric rib, a low-index cladding, a low-index nano-slot, and an inverted metal rib. Due to the field enhancement in the nano-slot region, a gain enhancement is observed, i.e., the ratio ∂G/∂g >1, where g and G are the gains of the gain medium and the TM fundamental mode of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide, respectively. For a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a core width of w(co)=30nm and a slot height of h(slot)=50nm, the intrinsic loss could be compensated when using a low-index medium with a moderate gain of 176dB/cm. When introducing the high-index gain medium for the hybrid plasmonic waveguide, a higher gain is obtained by choosing a wider core width. For the high-index gain case with h(slot)=50nm and w(co)=500nm, a gain of about 200dB/cm also suffices for the compensation of the intrinsic loss.

Abstract
We report alignment of anisotropic amphiphilic dye molecules within oblate and prolate anisotropic micelles and lamellae, the basic building blocks of surfactant-based lyotropic liquid crystals. Absorption and fluorescence transition dipole moments of these dye molecules orient either parallel or orthogonal to the liquid crystal director. This alignment enables three-dimensional visualization of director structures and defects in different lyotropic mesophases by means of fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy and two-photon excitation fluorescence polarizing microscopy. The studied structures include nematic tactoids, Schlieren texture with disclinations in the calamitic nematic phase, oily streaks in the lamellar phase, developable domains in the columnar hexagonal phase, and various types of line defects in the discotic cholesteric phase. Orientational three-dimensional imaging of structures in the lyotropic cholesterics reveals large Burgers vector dislocations in cholesteric layering with singular disclinations in the dislocation cores that are not common for their thermotropic counterparts.

Abstract
A negative event-related potential (ERP) component, known as N170, can be readily recorded over the posterior left brain region when skilled readers are presented with visual words. This left-lateralized word-related N170 has been attributed either to linguistic processes, particularly phonological processing, or to the role of orthographic regularity, emphasizing a perceptual origin. This debate, however, is difficult to resolve in the context of alphabetic scripts because of the tight relations between orthography and phonology. In contrast, Chinese characters have arbitrary mappings between orthographic and sound forms, making it possible to tease apart these two properties of visual words. We therefore addressed this issue by examining ERP responses to Chinese characters and three types of structurally matched but unpronounceable stimuli: pseudo-characters, false-characters, and stroke combinations. A content-irrelevant color matching task was adopted to minimize potentially different top-down modulations across stimulus types. Results show that, relative to false-characters and stroke combinations, real- and pseudo-characters evoked greater N170 in the left posterior brain region. Critically, despite being unpronounceable, pseudo-characters produced the same amplitude and left-lateralized N170, just as real-characters. These results provide strong evidence that orthography rather than phonology serves as the main driver for the enhanced and left-lateralized N170 to visual words.

Abstract
In our common understanding, for strong absorption or amplification in a slab structure, the desire of reducing the slab thickness seems contradictory to the condition of small loss or gain. In this paper, this common understanding is challenged. It is shown that an arbitrarily thin metamaterial layer can perfectly absorb or giantly amplify an incident plane wave at a critical angle when the real parts of the permittivity and permeability of the metamaterial are zero while the absolute imaginary parts can be arbitrarily small. The metamaterial layer needs a totally reflective substrate for perfect absorption, while this is not required for giant magnification. Detailed analysis for the existence of the critical angle and physical explanation for these abnormal phenomena are given.

Abstract
Successful further development of superhigh-constrast upconversion (UC) bioimaging requires addressing the existing paradox: 980 nm laser light is used to excite upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), while 980 nm light has strong optical absorption of water and biological specimens. The overheating caused by 980 nm excitation laser light in UC bioimaging is computationally and experimentally investigated for the first time. A new promising excitation approach for better near-infrared to near-infrared (NIR-to-NIR) UC photoluminescence in vitro or in vivo imaging is proposed employing a cost-effective 915 nm laser. This novel laser excitation method provides drastically less heating of the biological specimen and larger imaging depth in the animals or tissues due to quite low water absorption. Experimentally obtained thermal-graphic maps of the mouse in response to the laser heating are investigated to demonstrate the less heating advantage of the 915 nm laser. Our tissue phantom experiments and simulations verified that the 915 nm laser is superior to the 980 nm laser for deep tissue imaging. A novel and facile strategy for surface functionalization is utilized to render UCNPs hydrophilic, stable, and cell targeting. These as-prepared UCNPs were characterized by TEM, emission spectroscopy, XRD, FTIR, and zeta potential. Specifically targeting UCNPs excited with a 915 nm laser have shown very high contrast UC bioimaging. Highly stable DSPE-mPEG-5000-encapsulated UCNPs were injected into mice to perform in vivo imaging. Imaging and spectroscopy analysis of UC photoluminescence demonstrated that a 915 nm laser can serve as a new promising excitation light for UC animal imaging.

Abstract
The paper presents a method of development of a detailed network model to represent retinal capillary vasculature. The capillary model is a circular mesh consisting of concentric rings with an increasing diameter. Each of the rings has uniformly distributed bifurcation nodes to represent capillary vessels. The model is customized using the data that has been measured from confocal microscopic images of a mouse retina. The capillary model developed can be connected to networks of larger vessels of the vasculature such as arterial and venous networks to form a complete model of the retinal network. A method to automate such interface connections between capillary and other vascular networks using connecting vessels (i.e., pre-capillary and post-capillary) is also presented in the paper. Such a detailed image-based capillary model together with the arterial and venular networks can be used for various circulation simulations to obtain accurate information on hemodynamic quantities such as the spatial distribution of pressure and flow in the vasculature for both physiological and pathological conditions. The method presented for the development of the capillary model can also be adopted for vasculatures of other organs.

Abstract
A proposal for broadband wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing is presented based on a slot waveguide with silicon nanocrystals (Si-nc's) as the optical nonlinear material. The dispersion of the waveguide is engineered to realize a flat dispersion as well as a small effective mode area for better nonlinear interaction by optimizing the waveguide dimensions. The conversion performance is synthetically analyzed and numerical results show that a bandwidth of over 400 nm and an efficiency of -2.38 dB can be achieved using a pump power of 150 mW in a 4 mm long Si-nc slot waveguide with slot width of 50 nm, slab width of 310 nm, and height of 305 nm.

Abstract
A new fiber-optic relative humidity (RH) sensor based on a thin-core fiber modal interferometer (TCFMI) with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in between is presented. Poly (N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium chloride) (P4VP·HCl) and poly (vinylsulfonic acid, sodium salt) (PVS) are layer-by-layer deposited on the side surface of the sensor for RH sensing. The fabrication of the sensing nanocoating is characterized by using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The incorporation of FBG in the middle of TCFMI can compensate the cross sensitivity of the sensor to temperature. The proposed sensor can detect the RH with resolution of 0.78% in a large RH range at different temperatures. A linear, fast and reversible response has been experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method for temperature sensing using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS)-based slow light. The approach relies on temperature dependence of the Brillouin frequency shift in a fiber, hence the time delay of an input probe pulse. By measuring the delay, temperature sensing can be realized. We achieve temperature measurement in a 100 m single-mode fiber (SMF) using a cw pump. The main temperature-sensing range is ∼18°C from the room temperature, limited by the SBS gain bandwidth. To apply the technique for measurement of a shorter fiber segment, a pulsed pump is used to introduce SBS slow light. Temperature sensing is achieved in a 2 m SMF with a main sensing range of around ∼25°C. The scheme is easily implemented, exhibits a relatively high temperature sensitivity with a resolution better than 1.0°C, and is potentially applicable for distributed sensing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interleukin (IL)-29 is a newly described cytokine that has anti-viral activity, induces tumor cell death and regulates immune function. Whether it plays a role in immune disorders is unclear. This study aims to examine the role of IL-29 in the modulation of immune response under allergic environment. METHODS A group of patients with allergic asthma or/and allergic rhinitis was recruited to this study. Serum samples were collected from the patients in both in-season and out-season; the serum levels of IL-29 were determined by enzyme-linked immunoassay. Cell types of IL-29-producing cells in upper airway mucosa were identified with immune staining and examined by immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. RESULTS High serum levels of IL-29 were detected in patients with allergic asthma in in-season, but not in out-season. The majority of IL-29(+) cells in upper airway tissue were CD14(+) cells. Exposure to specific antigens triggered the release of IL-4 from antigen-specific CD4(+) T cells; the released IL-4 activated CD14(+) cells to release IL-29; the released IL-29 further triggered the release of IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor from CD4(+) T cells. CONCLUSIONS Interleukin-29 is involved in the pathogenesis of allergic inflammation via modulating immune cells' function to release proinflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
Synaptophysin and synaptobrevin 2 associate closely with packaging and storage of synaptic vesicles and transmitter release, and both play important roles in the development of rat cochlea. We examined the differential expression of synaptophysin and synaptobrevin 2 in the developing Sprague-Dawley rat cochlea, and investigated the relationship between their expression and auditory development. The expression of synaptophysin and synaptobrevin 2 was not observed in Kolliker's and Corti's organ at postnatal 1 day (P1) and P5, and the top turn of the cochlea at P10. Expression was detected in the outer spiral bundle (OSB), the inner spiral bundle (ISB), and the medial wall of the Deiters' cell of the cochlea at P14, and P28, and in the middle or the basal turn of Corti's organ at P10. Synaptobrevin 2 was expressed in the top of the inner hair cells (IHCs) in Corti's organ of both P14 and P28 rats. All spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) were stained at all ages examined. The localization of synaptophysin and synaptobrevin 2 in the cochlea was closely associated with the distribution of nerve fibers and neural activity (the docking and release of synaptic vesicles). Synaptophysin and synaptobrevin 2 were expressed in a dynamic manner during the development of rat cochlea. Their expression differences during the development were in favor of the configuration course constructed between nerve endings and target cells. It also played a key role in the formation of the correct coding of auditory information during auditory system development.

Abstract
Nano-scale power splitters based on Si hybrid plasmonic waveguides are designed by utilizing the multimode interference (MMI) effect as well as Y-branch structure. A three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method is used for simulating the light propagation and optimizing the structural parameters. The designed 1 × 2 50:50 MMI power splitter has a nano-scale size of only 650 nm × 530 nm. The designed Y-branch power splitter is also very small, i.e., about 900 nm × 600 nm. The fabrication tolerance is also analyzed and it is shown that the tolerance of the waveguide width is much larger than±50 nm. The power splitter has a very broad band of over 500 nm. In order to achieve a variable power splitting ratio, a 2×2 two-mode interference coupler and an asymmetric Y-branch are used and the corresponding power splitting ratio can be tuned in the range of 97.1%:2.9%-1.7%:98.3% and 84%:16%-16%:84%, respectively. Finally a 1×4 power splitter with a device footprint of 1.9 μm × 2.6 μm is also presented using cascaded Y-branches.
