Abstract
Fine structure in proton emission from the 3.1(3) mus activity of 145Tm was discovered by using a novel technique of digital processing of overlapping recoil implantation and decay signals. Proton transitions to the ground state of 144Er and to its first excited 2(+) state at 0.33(1) MeV with a branching ratio I(p)(2(+))=9.6+/-1.5% were observed. The structure of the 145Tm wave function and the emission process were analyzed by using particle-core vibration coupling models.

Abstract
Young adults are at high risk for acquiring STDs/HIV due primarily to multiple sex partners, unprotected sex, and substance use combined with sexual activity. Contranormative settings--such as the annual spring break vacation--provide ideal conditions for the potentially lethal interaction between alcohol, drugs, and sexual risk-taking. As a steadily growing form of youth travel and characterized by binge drinking, illicit drug use, and unsafe sexual practices, spring break has become a North American institution involving large numbers of travellers. In this study, the theory of interpersonal behaviour was used to explain college students' health-risk behaviours in the context of spring break and pre- and post-spring break surveys were used to examine casual sex and condom use behaviours. Multivariate analyses revealed peer influences, prior experiences with casual sex, alcohol consumption prior to sex, and impulsivity to be significant predictors of casual sex, while impulsivity and condom availability were significant predictors of students' use of condoms during casual sex.

Abstract
The structural evolution in amorphous silicon and germanium thin films has been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) in conjunction with autocorrelation function (ACF) analysis. The results established that the structure of as-deposited semiconductor films is of a high density of nanocrystallites embedded in the amorphous matrix. In addition, from ACF analysis, the structure of a-Ge is more ordered than that of a-Si. The density of embedded nanocrystallites in amorphous films was found to diminish with annealing temperature first, then to increase. The conclusions also corroborate well with the results of diminished medium-range order in annealed amorphous films determined previously by a variable coherence microscopy method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The development of intracranial collateral circulation is associated with a lower risk of stroke. A noninvasive technique that can reliably detect the presence of intracranial collaterals would be a valuable factor in the assessment of risk in patients with occlusive cerebrovascular disease. METHODS Color velocity imaging quantification was used to measure the blood flow volume of the common carotid and vertebral arteries in 40 patients with carotid occlusive disease. The blood flow volumes in these arteries were correlated with angiographic evidence of collaterals to establish the best cutoffs for detecting intracranial collateral circulation. RESULTS A blood flow volume of either > or =370 mL/min in the common carotid artery or > or =120 mL/min in the vertebral artery was indicative of the presence of intracranial collaterals. The sensitivity and specificity for the common carotid artery were 92.3% [95% confidence interval (CI), 62.1 to 99.6] and 92.1% (95% CI, 77.5 to 97.9), respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for the vertebral artery were 75.0% (95% CI, 35.6 to 95.5) and 87.5% (95% CI, 66.5 to 96.7), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Color velocity imaging quantification offers a noninvasive, accurate method for detecting the presence of intracranial collateral circulation and quantifying its magnitude. This technique would be a useful adjunct in screening or continuous monitoring of patients with severe carotid occlusive disease.

Abstract
Resistance of two strains of cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, to fenvalerate and imidacloprid were determined on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativa L.) after resistance selection of one strain to fenvalerate for 16 consecutive generations, and of a second strain to imidacloprid for 12 consecutive generations on cotton in greenhouses. Dose-response and activities of detoxication enzymes of the fenvalerate-resistant strain (R-fenvalerate), the imidacloprid-resistant strain (R-imidacloprid), and a susceptible strain (S) were determined. After 16 consecutive generations of selection, resistance of A. gossypii to fenvalerate increased >29,000-fold and to imidacloprid 8.1-fold. On cucumber. resistance of the R-fenvalerate strain to fenvalerate increased 700-fold and to imidacloprid 3.6-fold. However, the most significant finding in this study was that the R-imidacloprid strain exhibited cross-resistance to fenvalerate, with a resistance ratio of 108.9-fold on cotton and 3:3.5-fold on cucumber, whereas the R-fenvalerate strain did not show significant cross-resistance to imidacloprid on either plant species. Both resistant strains of A. gossypii were more resistant to fenvalerate on cotton than on cucumber, whereas their susceptibility to imidacloprid on otton and cucumber were not significantly different. The response of the S strain to fenvalerate and imidacloprid were similar on cotton and Cucumber. Activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and alpha-naphthylacetate (alpha-NA) esterases of A. gossypii were significantly different among the three strains, with the R-fenvalerate strains having the highest, followed by the R-imidacloprid strain, and the S strain the lowest. The activities of the AChE and alpha-NA esterases for all three strains were also significantly higher on cotton than on cucumber. The resistance mechanism and resistance management strategies for the R-fenvalerate and R-imidacloprid strains of A. gossypii to fenvalerate and imidacloprid on cotton and cucumber are discussed.

Abstract
Magnolol has been reported to have anticancer activity. In this study we found that treatment with 100 microm magnolol induced apoptosis in cultured human hepatoma (Hep G2) and colon cancer (COLO 205) cell lines but not in human untransformed gingival fibroblasts and human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Our investigation of apoptosis in Hep G2 cells showed a sequence of associated intracellular events that included (a) increased cytosolic free Ca(2+); (b) increased translocation of cytochrome c (Cyto c) from mitochondria to cytosol; (c) activation of caspase 3, caspase 8, and caspase 9; and (d) downregulation of bcl-2 protein. Pretreatment of the cells with the phospholipase C inhibitor 1-[6-[[(17 beta)-3-methoxyestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17-yl]amino]hexyl]-1 H-pyrrole-2,5-dione (U73122) or the intracellular chelator of Ca(2+) 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid acetoxymethyl ester (BAPTA/AM) inhibited the subsequent magnolol augmentation of [Ca(2+)](i) and also the activation of caspase-8 and caspase-9, so that the occurrence of apoptosis in those cells was greatly reduced. Pretreatment of the cells with ZB4 (which disrupts the Fas response mechanism) also decreased the subsequent magnolol-induced caspase-8 activation and reduced the occurrence of apoptosis. We interpreted these findings to indicate that the above-listed sequence of intracellular events led to the apoptosis seen in Hep G2 cells and that [Ca(2+)](i), Cyto c, and Fas function as intracellular signals to coordinate those events.

Abstract
Prenatal diagnosis of cleft palate is very important to prenatal consultation and management after birth. To examine if three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound (US) is an accurate diagnostic method for clinical use, we analyzed our experience in detecting cleft palate by 3-D US. From June 1996 to January 2000, 21 fetuses with facial clefts were scanned by 2-D US, as well as by 3-D US. The coronal and oblique planes were reconstructed by 3-D US to detect the cleft palate. In addition, level II US was performed to find any possibly associated anomalies. All the scans were recorded on optic disks for final analysis. In our study, the gestational age when prenatal diagnosis was made by US initially was between 20 and 34 weeks. The accuracy for prenatal diagnosis of cleft lip with or without cleft palate by 3-D US was 100%, which was superior to that by 2-D US (p < 0.05). In addition, we proposed a novel method to evaluate the cleft palate systemically by 3-D US. In conclusion, from our study, fetuses with cleft lip combined with or without cleft palate can be easily differentiated by 3-D US. The reconstruction of coronal and oblique planes by 3-D US is a powerful tool for detecting cleft palate.

Abstract
The ability to climb a steep step or rise from a low chair after total knee replacement may be enhanced if the required force in the quadriceps muscle is reduced. This can potentially be achieved if the total knee produces a large lever arm measured from the femoral-tibial contact point to the patellar ligament. A reduced quadriceps force would also reduce the patello-femoral force and the femoral-tibial contact force. The contact point location is likely to be a function of the geometry of the femoral and tibial components in the sagittal plane, including the relative distal and posterior radii of the femoral profile, the location of the bottom-of-the-dish of the tibial surface, the radius of the tibial surface, and the presence or absence of the posterior cruciate ligament. A three-dimensional model of the knee was developed including the quadriceps and various ligaments. In the study, the motion was confined to flexion extension and displacement in the sagittal plane. The quadriceps was assumed to be the only muscle acting. A standard software package (Pro/Mechanica) was used for the analysis. For a femoral component with a smaller distal radius, there was 12% reduction in the quadriceps muscle force and up to 11% reduction in the patello-femoral force from about 100 up to 60 degrees flexion. However, apart from that, there were less than 10% differences in all the forces as a function of all of the design variables studied. This was attributed to the relatively small changes in the lever arm of the patella tendon, since the tendon moves in an anterior-posterior direction along with the femur. An additional factor explaining the results was the change in the anterior-posterior contact point as controlled by the forces in the patella tendon and in the soft tissues. The results imply that for a standard condylar replacement knee, the muscle and contact forces are not greatly affected by the geometrical design variables.

Abstract
Information on the work-time exposure of public bus and taxicab drivers to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may be a critical factor in exploring the association between occupational exposure and health effects. Accordingly, this study evaluated the work-time VOC exposure of public bus and taxicab drivers by measurement of six selected aromatic VOC concentrations in the personal air of public bus and taxicab drivers during winter and summer. Two groups of five public bus drivers (smokers and nonsmokers) and two groups of five taxicab drivers (smokers and nonsmokers) were recruited for the study. The taxicab drivers were found to be exposed to higher aromatic compound levels than the bus drivers during their daily work time. The personal exposure of the bus and taxicab drivers was influenced by whether or not they smoked plus the season. It was also established that the potential exposure of bus drivers to aromatic VOCs did not exceed that of an unemployed reference group, whereas the potential exposure of taxicab drivers did. Meanwhile, based on comparison of the calculated in-vehicle concentrations with those from a previous study, the VOC levels inside public buses and taxicabs were found to be lower than those inside automobiles.

Abstract
Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) may complicate multiple pregnancy. Monochorionic discordant twins with oligohydramnios and polyhydramnios may be diagnostic. Hydrops fetalis is particularly ominous. All the signs can appear independently at any stage of gestation. However, TTTS with hydrops fetalis in early pregnancy is rare. We report here a case of TTTS complicated with hydrops fetalis diagnosed at 14 weeks of gestation. Our case may be one of the earliest cases of the prenatal diagnosis of TTTS complicated with hydrops fetalis in the literature.

Abstract
Fumonisins are specific inhibitors of ceramide synthase in sphingolipid metabolism. An alteration in sphingolipid metabolism as a result of fumonisin exposure is related to cell death (Yoo et al., 1992). The objective of this study was to investigate whether elevated free sphinganine levels are related to the sensitivity of cultured cells to fumonisin exposure. Fumonisin B1 elevated the intracellular free sphinganine concentraions in both LLC-PK1 and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. However, CHO cells are resistant to fumonisin cytotoxicity at 50 microM, while LLC-PK1 cells are sensitive at concentrations greater than 35 microM. The intracellular concentration of free sphinganine in LLC-PK, cells treated at 50 microM fumonisin B1 for 72 h was approximately 1450 pmol/mg protein relative to the 37 pmol observed in the control culture. Under the same conditions, the population of apoptotic cells in the 50 M fumonisin B1-treated culture was approximately 37% of the total compared to 12% in the control. The caspase III-like activity after 72 h in the 50 microM fumonisin B1-exposed culture increased to approximately 50 pmol/mg protein/hr compared to 6 pmol/mg protein/hr in the control. L-cycloserine, a serine palmitoyltransferase inhibitor, reduced the fumonisin B1-stimulated caspase III-like activity down to the control level. Under the same culture conditions, the intracellular concentration of free sphinganine after L-cycloserine plus fumonisin B1 treatment was 140 pmol/mg protein compared to 1450 pmol/mg protein in fumonisin B1 alone. The intracellular concentration of free sphinganine in CHO cells treated with 50 microM fumonisin B1 for 72 h was approximately 460 pmol/mg protein, indicating that the mass amount of elevated free sphinganine in the CHO cells was about 32% of that in LLC-PK1 cells. Adding exogenous sphinganine to the CHO cells along with 50 microM fumonisin B1 treatment for 72 h caused both necrosis and apoptosis. In conclusion, the elevated endogenous sphinganine acts as a contributing factor to the fumonisin-induced cell death.

Abstract
The cardiac sarcolemmal membrane cis -unsaturated fatty acid-sensitive phospholipase D hydrolyzes phosphatidylcholine to form phosphatidic acid. The functional significance of phosphatidic acid is indicated by its ability to increase [Ca(2+)](i)and augment cardiac contractile performance via the activation of phospholipase C. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that a defect occurs in the membrane level of phosphatidic acid and/or the responsiveness of cardiomyocytes to phosphatidic acid in congestive heart failure due to myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarction was produced in rats by ligation of the left coronary artery while sham-operated animals served as control. At 8 weeks after surgery, the experimental animals were at a stage of moderate congestive heart failure. Compared to sham controls, phosphatidic acid-mediated increase in [Ca(2+)](i), as determined by the fura 2-AM technique, was significantly reduced in failing cardiomyocytes. Immunoprecipitation of sarcolemmal phospholipase C isoenzymes using specific monoclonal antibodies revealed that the stimulation of phospholipase C gamma(1)and delta(1)phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate hydrolyzing activities by phosphatidic acid was decreased in the failing heart. Although the activity of phospholipase C beta(1)in the failing heart was higher than the control, phosphatidic acid did not stimulate this isoform in control sarcolemma, and produced an inhibitory action in the failing heart preparation. Furthermore, the specific binding of phosphatidic acid to phospholipase C gamma(1)and delta(1)isoenzymes was decreased, whereas binding to phospholipase beta(1)was absent in the failing heart. A reduction in the intramembranal level of phosphatidic acid derived via cis -unsaturated fatty acid-sensitive phospholipase D was also seen in the failing heart. These findings suggest that a defect in phosphatidic acid-mediated signal pathway in sarcolemma may represent a novel mechanism of heart dysfunction in congestive heart failure.

Abstract
Streptococcus pneumoniae infections can involve multiple organs and cause high mortality and morbidity. In this retrospective study, we reviewed patients with invasive pneumococcal infection in the pediatric department of a teaching hospital in Taipei. From 1984 to 1998, 81 children with invasive pneumococcal infection were hospitalized. Twenty-eight patients had meningitis, 27 had pneumonia with pleural effusion, 60 had sepsis, and 4 had arthritis. Thirty-eight patients had more than one site of infection. Most of our patients (81.7%) were below 5 years of age. Pneumococcal infections were more common from October to March. Eight patients had a history of trauma that correlated with the site of infection. Thirteen patients (16.0%) expired and 20 (24.7%) had severe sequelae. Multi-regression analysis found that meningitis and complications were independent variables that affected the outcome. The percentage of penicillin-resistant strains increased beginning in 1990 and accounted for about four-fifths of the infections in the final 2 years of the study. Since invasive pneumococcal infections in children may have a poor prognosis and penicillin-resistant strains have become increasingly common, early and adequate antibiotic therapy should be given as soon as possible.

Abstract
Two excited well-deformed bands have been observed in the semi-magic nucleus (58)Ni. One of the bands was observed to partially decay by emission of a prompt discrete alpha particle that feeds the 2949 keV 6(+) spherical yrast state in the daughter nucleus (54)Fe. This constitutes the first observation of prompt alpha emission from states lying in the deformed secondary minimum of the nuclear potential. gamma-ray linking transitions via several parallel paths establish the spin, parity, and excitation energy of this deformed band in (58)Ni.

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to assess the fetal cerebellar volume during normal gestation using three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound (US) and to establish a normal chart of fetal cerebellar volume using Altman's model of statistics. In total, 231 healthy fetuses were studied for assessment of cerebellar volume using a 3-D US volume scanner. The fetuses to be studied were selected to give a cross-sectional series (i.e., each fetus was examined only once). Polynomial regression analysis was calculated to find the best-fit model using gestational age as the independent variable and cerebellar volume as the dependent variable. Altman's model was used to calculate the age-related reference centiles for the variance of cerebellar volume. In addition, common fetal growth indices, such as biparietal diameter, occipitofrontal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length and estimated fetal weight, were also measured for the correlation between cerebellar volume and these indices. Our results indicated that the fetal cerebellar volume was highly correlated with gestational age in normal pregnancies with the best-fit polynomial regression equation of a second-order (r = 0.91, p < 0.0001). In addition, fetal cerebellar volume in normal gestation is also highly correlated with common fetal growth indices, such as biparietal diameter, occipitofrontal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length and estimated fetal weight (all p < 0.0001). Following the Altman's model, a normal growth chart of fetal cerebellar volume was established for clinical reference. In conclusion, with 3-D US, the assessment of fetal cerebellar volume becomes feasible. We believe that fetal cerebellar volume assessed by 3-D US may be useful in detecting cerebellar hypoplasia and relevant syndromes prenatally.

Abstract
Thrombin-induced endothelial monolayer hyperpermeability is thought to result from increased F-actin stress fiber-related contractile tension, a process regulated by the small GTP-binding protein Rho. We tested whether this process was dependent on the Rho-associated protein kinase, ROCK, using a specific ROCK inhibitor, Y-27632. The effects of Y-27632 on thrombin-induced myosin light chain phosphorylation (MLCP) and tyrosine phosphorylation of p125 focal adhesion kinase (p125(FAK)) and paxillin were measured by Western blotting. F-actin organization and content were analyzed by digital imaging, and endothelial monolayer permeability was measured in bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cell (EC) monolayers using a size-selective permeability assay. Y-27632 enhanced EC monolayer barrier function due to a decline in small-pore number that was associated with increased EC surface area, reduced F-actin content, and reorganization of F-actin to beta-catenin-containing cell-cell adherens junctions. Although Y-27632 prevented thrombin-induced MLCP, stress fiber formation, and the increased phosphotyrosine content of paxillin and p125(FAK), it attenuated but did not prevent the thrombin-induced formation of large paracellular holes. These data indicate that thrombin-induced stress fiber formation is ROCK dependent. In contrast, thrombin-induced paracellular hole formation occurs in a ROCK-independent manner, whereas thrombin-induced monolayer hyperpermeability appears to be partially ROCK dependent.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to investigate the parameters of fetal circulation of normal pregnancies and their relationship to fetal cardiac output. We performed a cross-sectional study of 315 normal singleton pregnancies between 20 and 40 weeks' gestation without fetal chromosomal or structural malformations. After follow-up to delivery, 212 patients who fit all the criteria were enrolled for final analysis. Blood flow velocity waveforms were obtained from the tricuspid and mitral ventricular inflow, ascending aorta (AAO), pulmonary artery (PA), middle cerebral artery (MCA), renal artery (RA), umbilical artery (UA), descending aorta (DAO), inferior vena cava (IVC) and ductus venosus (DV) using duplex (real-time Doppler) ultrasound (US) scanner. The peak velocity of DV, AAO, PA and MCA were also obtained. At the intracardiac level, the ratio of peak flow velocity of E wave to peak flow velocity of A wave (E:A ratio) of mitral valve (MV) increased more rapidly than tricuspid valve (TV) E:A ratio. For the great vessels, aortic peak velocity remained higher than the pulmonary peak velocity with advancing gestation. The cardiac output closely correlated to the cardiac compliance and flow resistance indices at arterial and venous level. The acceleration time in the fetal arteries increased with advancing gestation in AAO, PA, MCA and DAO, but it decreased in RA and kept constant in UA. In addition, the acceleration time of UA was unrelated to cardiac output. The changes of the fetal intracardiac, arterial and venous impedances were remarkable through the gestation and related to cardiac output. Fetal cardiac output correlated well with the changes of arterial resistance, except with the DAO. The ventricular compliance increased with advancing gestation, especially in the left side, and was highly related to the change of cardiac output. The acceleration time in major arteries positively correlated with the gestational age and cardiac output, except in UA and RA; this indicates the difference of the changes of mean arterial pressure in uteroplacental circulation, fetal organs and great vessels. In conclusion, the fetal cardiac output correlated well with the ventricular compliance and was influenced by both hemodynamic changes in peripheral resistance and mean arterial pressure.

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to use quantitative three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasonography to establish the normal charts of three fetal ear-growth indexes, (ear length, ear width and ear area), and to validate their efficacy in the prenatal diagnosis of fetal trisomies, either separately or as a combination. Using quantitative 3-D ultrasonography, we performed a prospective study to measure the three fetal ear growth indexes (i.e., ear length, ear width and ear area) in 129 singleton pregnancies, including 122 normal fetuses and 7 trisomies. The ear shape was also evaluated in these fetuses using both 2-D and 3-D ultrasonography. Our results showed that: First, 3-D ultrasonography offers better visualization and easier evaluation of fetal ears than 2-D ultrasonography. Second, when using the quantitative assessment of 3-D ultrasonography, the measurements of ear length, ear width and ear area were all correlated significantly with gestational age in normal pregnancies (r = 0.881, 0.848, and 0.890, respectively). In addition, 3 of 7 fetal trisomies had ear length below the tenth percentile, 1 had ear width below the tenth percentile, and 2 had ear area below the tenth percentile. Furthermore, with the combination of these three measurements, (including ear length, ear width and ear area), the sensitivity in detecting fetal trisomies was elevated to 57.1% and the specificity was 83.2%. In conclusion, 3-D ultrasonography reduces the limitations of 2-D ultrasonography in the evaluation of fetal ears. However, fetal ear measurement may not be used as a single ultrasonographic parameter in identifying aneuploid fetuses. We recommend using the combination of these three ear growth indexes to enhance the detection rate of aneuploidy.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the sonographic characteristics of alobar holoprosencephaly (AH) in utero. Seventeen cases were diagnosed at 16-30 weeks' gestation by two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasound from October 1994 to December 1998. In this series, the prenatal prevalence was 1 out of 415 and the detection rate of AH by prenatal ultrasound was 100%. Eleven cases (64.7%) had concurrent facial anomalies. Cleft lip and hypotelorism were the most common associated facial anomalies (72.7%). Two cases (11.8%) were twin pregnancy with one fetus affected. We present one of the largest series in the literature and compare it with previous reports. From this series, we concluded that: (1) intracranial findings, including monoventricle, fused thalami, and the absence of midline structures, were reliable sonographic characteristics for prenatal diagnosis; (2) cleft lip and hypotelorism seemed to be more common associated facial malformations than cyclopia or cebocephaly with AH; and (3) although three-dimensional ultrasound did not change the diagnosis of AH made by two-dimensional ultrasound in this series, three-dimensional ultrasound does assist in defining the severity and extent of AH.

Abstract
This paper examines the control of electrical stimulators for restoring the standing function to paraplegics. Patient-driven controllers are based on the knowledge that standing, using support handles, is guided by the neurologically intact natural motor control system, acting through the arms. One category of patient-driven controller is CHRELMS (Control by Handle Reactions of Leg Muscle Stimulation). The first experiments with patient-driven controllers are reported. Experiments in the CHRELMS control of one volunteer are described. Proportional control did not allow the subject to stand up because of the strategy he used, but integral control was successful. With it, he could stand up and sit down slowly, entirely guided by himself, as well as making other manoeuvres. Without changing controller mode, and by leaning forwards and backwards, he could 'posture switch' his support muscles. These are significant achievements and justify a larger study of patient-driven controllers. The subject's control strategies are discussed.

Abstract
Fetal cerebellum scanning by prenatal ultrasound (US) is very important for early detection of fetal central-nervous-system anomaly, as well as for the determination of gestational age (GA). Due to the small organ size and the unique shape of the fetal cerebellum (CL), accurate measurement of the dimensions of CL by two-dimensional (2-D) US is not easy if the appropriate plane cannot be reached. With the advent of three-dimensional (3-D) US, the disadvantages of 2-D US in assessing the fetal CL dimensions can be avoided. The purpose of this study was to assess the fetal cerebellar transverse diameter (CTD) and cerebellar antero-posterior diameter (CAD) using 3-D US. First, we compared the reproducibility of 2-D and 3-D US on the assessment of fetal cerebellar dimensions. Second, we prospectively measured CTD and CAD in 223 healthy fetuses using a cross-sectional design with an attempt to establish the normal growth charts of fetal CL. Our results showed 3-D US is superior to 2-D US in the reproducibility test of fetal cerebellar dimensions. In addition, with GA as the dependent variable, polynomial regression analysis showed that the best-fit equations for both CTD vs. GA and CAD vs. GA were the first-order. The best-fit predictive equation of GA by CTD was GA (week) = 9.0281 + 0. 58533 x CTD (mm) (r = 0.95, n = 223, SE = 1.82 weeks, p < 0.0001), and the best-fit predictive equation of GA by CAD was GA (week) = 10. 855 + 1.1672 x CAD (mm) (r = 0.82, n = 223, SE = 3.41 weeks, p < 0. 0001). Furthermore, all the correlation coefficients of CTD or CAD vs. the common fetal growth indexes were also highly significant (all p < 0.0001). In conclusion, our data of fetal CL dimensions assessed by 3-D US may serve as a useful reference in assessing fetal CL growth, dating GA or detecting fetal CL anomalies.
