Abstract
We present a new search for H0V production, where H0 is a scalar Higgs boson decaying into bb with branching ratio beta, and V is a Z0 boson decaying into e+e-, mu+mu-, or nunu. This search is then combined with previous searches for H0V where V is a W+/- boson or a hadronically decaying Z0. The data sample consists of 106 +/- 4 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV accumulated by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Observing no evidence of a signal, we set 95% Bayesian credibility level upper limits on sigma(pp --> H0V) x beta. For H0 masses of 90, 110, and 130 GeV/c2, the limits are 7.8, 7.2, and 6.6 pb, respectively.

Mutational spectrum of steroid 21-hydroxylase and the genotype-phenotype association in Middle European patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Eur J Endocrinol 2005; 153:99-106. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the mutational spectrum of steroid 21-hydroxylase (CYP21) and the genotype- phenotype correlation in patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) registered in the Middle European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology CAH database, and to design a reliable and rational approach for CYP21 mutation detection in Middle European populations. DESIGN AND METHODS Molecular analysis of the CYP21 gene was performed in 432 CAH patients and 298 family members. Low-resolution genotyping was performed to detect the eight most common point mutations. High-resolution genotyping, including Southern blotting and sequencing was performed to detect CYP21 gene deletions, conversions, point mutations or other sequence changes. RESULTS CYP21 gene deletion and In2 and Ile172Asn mutation accounted for 72.7% of the affected alleles in the whole study group. A good genotype-phenotype correlation was observed, with the exception of Ile172Asn and Pro30Leu mutations. In 37% of patients low resolution genotyping could not identify the causative mutation or distinguish homozygosity from hemizygosity. Using high-resolution genotyping, the causative mutations could be identified in 341 out of 348 analyzed patients. A novel mutation Gln315Stop was found in one simple virilising CAH (SV-CAH) patient from Austria. In the remaining seven patients polymorphisms were identified as the leading sequence alteration. The presence of elevated basal and ACTH-stimulated 17-hydroxyprogesterone, premature pubarche, advanced bone age and clitoral hypertrophy directly implicated Asn493Ser polymorphism in the manifestation of nonclassical- (NC) and even SV-CAH. CONCLUSIONS By genotyping for the most common point mutations, CYP21 gene deletion/conversion and the 8 bp deletion in exon 3, it should be possible to identify the mutation in 94-99% of the diseased alleles in any investigated Middle European population. In patients with a mild form of the disease and no detectable mutation CYP21 gene polymorphisms should be considered as a plausible disease-causing mutation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ghrelin stimulates GH release and causes weight gain through increased food intake and reduced fat utilization. Ghrelin levels were shown to rise in the preprandial period and decrease shortly after meal consumption, suggesting a role as a possible meal initiator. However, ghrelin secretion in fasting subjects has not yet been studied in detail. DESIGN 24-h ghrelin profiles were studied in six healthy volunteers (three females; 25.5 years; body mass index 22.8 kg/m(2)) and compared with GH, insulin and glucose levels. METHODS Blood samples were taken every 20 min during a 24-h fasting period and total ghrelin levels were measured by RIA using a polyclonal rabbit antibody. The circadian pattern of ghrelin secretion and pulsatility (Cluster analysis) were evaluated. RESULTS An increase and spontaneous decrease in ghrelin were seen at the timepoints of customary meals. Ghrelin was secreted in a pulsatile manner with approximately 8 peaks/24 h. An overall decrease in ghrelin levels was observed during the study period. There was no correlation of ghrelin with GH, insulin or blood glucose levels. CONCLUSIONS This pilot study indicates that fasting ghrelin profiles display a circadian pattern similar to that described in people eating three times per day. In a fasting condition, GH, insulin and glucose do not appear to be involved in ghrelin regulation. In addition, we found that ghrelin is secreted in a pulsatile pattern. The variation in ghrelin independently of meals in fasting subjects supports previous observations that it is the brain that is primarily involved in the regulation of meal initiation.

Abstract
We report on a 10-year-old girl with tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome type II (TRPS II) and pronounced short stature (-4.8 SD). The patient has an interstitial chromosome 8q24.1 deletion of 12-15 Mb. The deletion spans all genes from CSMD3 to at least ANXA13 including the TRPS1 and EXT1 genes, which are responsible for the TRPS II phenotype. In addition to the features of TRPS II, the patient had growth hormone (GH) deficiency with diminished response in three stimulation tests. Therapy with 0.2 mg GH/kg/week led to an increase of growth velocity from 2.5 to 6.6 cm/year. To our knowledge, such a combination of TRPS II and GH deficiency has not yet been described.

Abstract
We present a measurement of relative partial widths and decay rate CP asymmetries in K-K+ and pi(-)pi(+) decays of D0 mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. We use a sample of 2x10(5) D(*+)-->D0pi(+) (and charge conjugate) decays with the D0 decaying to K-pi(+), K-K+, and pi(-)pi(+), corresponding to 123 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant direct CP violation is observed. We measure Gamma(D0-->K-K+)/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.0992+/-0.0011+/-0.0012, Gamma(D0-->pi(-)pi(+))/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.035 94+/-0.000 54+/-0.000 40, A(CP)(K-K+)=(2.0+/-1.2+/-0.6)%, and A(CP)(pi(-)pi(+))=(1.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)%, where, in all cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Search for excited and exotic electrons in the egamma decay channel in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:101802. Abstract
We present a search for excited and exotic electrons (e(*)) decaying to an electron and a photon, both with high transverse momentum. We use 202 pb(-1) of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector. No signal above standard model expectation is seen for associated ee(*) production. We discuss the e(*) sensitivity in the parameter space of the excited electron mass M(e(*)) and the compositeness energy scale Lambda. In the contact interaction model, we exclude 132 GeV/c(2)<M(e(*))<879 GeV/c(2) for Lambda = M(e(*)) at 95% confidence level (C.L.). In the gauge-mediated model, we exclude 126 GeV/c(2) < M(e(*)) < 430 GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. for the phenomenological coupling f/Lambda approximately 10(-2) GeV-1.

Abstract
We report the first measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for pp collisions at square root[s]=1.96 TeV, based on their decays to electrons and muons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 72 pb(-1) recorded with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We test e-mu universality in W decays, and we measure the ratio of leptonic W and Z rates from which the leptonic branching fraction B(W-->lnu) can be extracted as well as an indirect value for the total width of the W and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |V(cs)|.

Abstract
The standard model predictions for Wgamma and Zgamma production are tested using an integrated luminosity of 200 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross sections are measured by selecting leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, and photons with transverse energy ET>7 GeV that are well separated from leptons. The production cross sections and kinematic distributions for the Wgamma and Zgamma data are compared to SM predictions.

Search for doubly charged Higgs bosons decaying to dileptons in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 93:221802. Abstract
We present the results of a search for doubly charged Higgs bosons (H+/-+/-) decaying to dileptons (ll(')) using approximately 240 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. In our search region, given by same-sign ll(') mass m(ll('))>80 GeV/c(2) (100 GeV/c(2) for ee channel), we observe no evidence for H+/-+/- production. We set limits on sigma(pp -->H++H---->l(+)l('+)l(-)l('-)) as a function of the mass of the H+/-+/- and the chirality of its couplings. Assuming exclusive same-sign dilepton decays, we derive lower mass limits on H(+/-+/-)(L) of 133, 136, and 115 GeV/c(2) in the ee, mumu, and emu channels, respectively, and a lower mass limit of 113 GeV/c(2) on H(+/-+/-)(R) in the mumu channel, all at the 95% confidence level.

Measurement of the tt production cross section in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using dilepton events. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 93:142001. Abstract
We report a measurement of the tt production cross section using dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using a 197+/-12 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab, we use two complementary techniques to select candidate events. We compare the number of observed events and selected kinematical distributions with the predictions of the standard model and find good agreement. The combined result of the two techniques yields a tt production cross section of 7.0(+2.4)(-2.1)(stat)+1.6-1.1(syst)+/-0.4(lum) pb.

Abstract
We report the observation of a narrow state decaying into J/psipi+pi- and produced in 220 pb(-1) of p p-bar collisions at =1.96 Tesqaure root of sV in the CDF II experiment. We observe 730+/-90 decays. The mass is measured to be 3871.3+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.4(syst) MeV/c2, with an observed width consistent with the detector resolution. This is in agreement with the recent observation by the Belle Collaboration of the X(3872) meson.

Abstract
We report on a search for B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-) and B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-) decays in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV using 171 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The decay rates of these rare processes are sensitive to contributions from physics beyond the standard model. One event survives all our selection requirements, consistent with the background expectation. We derive branching ratio limits of B(B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-))<5.8x10(-7) and B(B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-))<1.5x10(-7) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To validate a mathematical model developed by Ranke et al. (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1999;84:1174-7783) to predict the GH response during the first years of GH replacement therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS 38 children with idiopathic GH deficiency (GHD) met all inclusion criteria for the prediction model, but the group differed in some characteristics from the cohort from which the model was derived. RESULTS Using the model for the 1st year including maximum GH after stimulation and the equation for the 6th year, the predicted value corresponded well with actual height gain. Differences were found when the growth response of the 1st year excluding maximum GH and that of the 2nd-5th year were calculated, resulting in a significant underestimation of actual height gain (-0.63 to -1.07 cm/year). CONCLUSION The mathematical prediction model tended to underpredict the growth response to GH treatment in our patients with pronounced GHD. The severity of GHD seems to be an important parameter for the 1st year prediction.

Abstract
We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y|</=1 in four fully reconstructed decay modes: D0-->K-pi(+), D(*+)-->D0pi(+), D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+), D(+)(s)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) comprises ophthalmological, endocrinological and neurological disorders resulting from varying degrees of midline malformation of the forebrain like visual impairment by optic nerve hypoplasia, endocrine deficits due to hypothalamic and/or pituitary anomalies, and psychomental retardation by associated cortical malformation. MRI shows aplasia/hypoplasia of the septum pellucidum and corpus callosum as a radiological hallmark. For etiology, genetic defects (Hesx1/HESX1 gene) as well as vascular disruption during embryonic brain development are discussed. AIM To perform detailed analysis of morphological findings and clinical symptoms and to improve care of SOD patients by interdisciplinary management. PATIENTS We investigated 25 patients with a mean age of 5.1 years at diagnosis. RESULTS Pituitary insufficiency was present in 11/25 patients, multiple deficits in 6 of them. Bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia was found in 70% of patients, unilateral in 20%. Mild or moderate neurological disorders were observed in the majority of patients (14/20), EEG was usually normal (12/19). Analysis of MRI films revealed very heterogeneous morphological anomalies, ranging from isolated agenesis of the septum pellucidum to multiple malformations, involving the cortex. Malrotation of the hippocampal structures was a common finding. CONCLUSION We conclude that only interdisciplinary management of SOD patients can ameliorate the exact diagnosis and outcome, depending on early visual or developmental support as well as early diagnosis and substitution of potentially life-threatening endocrine deficits.

Abstract
A study group of paediatric endocrinologists was established in Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Slovakia in order to investigate various aspects in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Five hundred and ninety-eight patients with CAH who were diagnosed between 1969 and 1998 were included in order to analyze the following questions. Epidemiological data: There were significantly fewer males (43%) than females (57%), and the percentage of males did not increase during the observation period. Salt wasters (SW) totalled 64.7%, whereas 35.3% had simple virilizing (SV) CAH. Diagnosis was established significantly later in boys than in girls (median of 26 vs. 13 days for SW, p < 0.0001; 1,817 vs. 1,010 days for SV, p < 0.03). Mortality in the general population was significantly lower than in CAH siblings (1.8% vs. 7.0%, p < 0.0001) or in SW children (2.2% vs. 11.3%, p < 0.0001). According to our calculation with the present clinical diagnostic criteria in Central Europe, from 40 expected CAH patients/year, 2-2.5 SW, and one female and four male SV patients will not be diagnosed. Auxological data: Growth data from 341 patients were analyzed retrospectively. Percentiles were constructed in a longitudinal/cross-sectional study and pubertal growth was described in a longitudinal analysis. Growth of SW patients was impaired in early childhood (0-3 years), but followed a normal course until puberty. In contrast, SV children had a normal growth pattern during early childhood, but were above the standard thereafter. The pubertal growth spurt was of normal magnitude in boys and girls, but started too early. Final height was reduced compared with both standard and target heights. There was no correlation between final height and age of starting treatment or the year of birth. Bone age was accelerated in both CAH types, but more so in SV patients. Molecular genetics: Three hundred and fifty-six patients were investigated for 11-14 of the most frequent mutations by direct allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and/or PCR followed by sequence-specific oligonucleotide, single strand chain polymorphism and restriction fragment length polymorphism. In the group as a whole, we most frequently found the Intron 2 splice mutation (30.8%) or a deletion/conversion (28.5%). The Intron 2 mutation was most frequent in the Hungarian population, whereas deletions/conversions were found more frequently in Slovenians. The other mutations had a similar distribution to those seen in other populations. Genotype-phenotype correlation confirms previous reports.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mutations of the prophet of PIT-1 (PROP-1), a paired-like homeodomain transcription factor which is responsible for early embryonic pituitary development, have recently been reported as a cause of combined pituitary hormone deficiency. METHODS We describe the phenotype, long-term auxological data and MRI findings in two families with 4 affected members, all of whom have a mutation of the PROP-1 gene. GH, TSH, PRL, LH and FSH were completely deficient in all patients. RESULTS ACTH deficiency was not diagnosed until the 3rd or 4th decades of life. Pituitary MRI showed an empty sella in 2 subjects, but unspecific tissue accumulation resembling a pituitary mass lesion in another patient. The affected boy from family II who was continuously treated with all the necessary hormones reached the familial target height. However, the 3 subjects in family I were only treated sporadically (GH treatment lasting from 1 to 3 years). CONCLUSION Despite this insufficient therapy, final height was in the lower normal range. Longitudinal growth continued up to the age of 40 years in these subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Longitudinal growth and bone age (BA) development are the most important clinical parameters for monitoring adequate glucocorticoid replacement in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). AIM OF THE STUDY To analyze the growth pattern of patients treated for CAH of the salt wasting (SW) and simple virilizing (SV) clinical forms; to evaluate final height as compared to reference data and individual target height; to evaluate the course of BA development. PATIENTS AND METHODS A large database of 598 patients with CAH was created in 5 Central European countries and growth data of 341 treated patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were of Caucasian origin. Centiles were constructed in a cross-sectional manner and an additional longitudinal analysis was performed in order to evaluate the pubertal growth spurt by applying particular statistical methods (Preece-Baines model). RESULTS The growth of SW CAH patients was impaired in infancy and early childhood (0-3 years of age), but followed normal patterns in childhood until puberty. In contrast, children with SV CAH had normal patterns of growth in infancy and early childhood and were considerably taller than healthy references during childhood. In the longitudinal study, peak height velocity in both boys and girls was normal, but it occurred at an earlier age than in the standard population. The final height of patients with CAH was reduced in comparison to both the reference and the individual target height. No correlations were found between final height and age at the start of the therapy in SV patients or between final height and year of birth. BA was advanced in both types of CAH, but more accelerated in SV patients. CONCLUSION Characteristic growth patterns for treated SV and SW CAH children were identified, with a normal pubertal growth spurt and reduced final height being observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate possible derangement in sodium balance in patients with the simple virilizing (SV) form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) which might have implications for therapeutic procedures. DESIGN Patients were sodium loaded throughout the protocol and studied after interruption of cortisone therapy for 4 days, after treatment with dexamethasone 1 mg/m2/d for 3 days and after additional therapy with 9alpha-fluorocortisone (9alphaF) 0.1 mg/m2 for 3 days and 9alphaF 0.2 mg/m2 for 3 days. After each phase, basal and stimulated (2 h in an upright position), aldosterone and plasma renin concentrations (PRC) were evaluated. METHODS Nine children aged 5.0 to 12.8 years with the clinical classification of SV CAH were studied. Diagnosis was established at the age of 2.9 +/- 1.9 years (mean +/- SD) and the patients were treated with oral hydrocortisone at a mean dose of 22.5 mg/m2/d, given in two or three daily doses. Seven patients were heterozygous for the Ile172Asn point mutation in exon 4, and two for the Pro30Leu mutation in exon 1 of the CYP21 gene. All of them had a more severe mutation or deletion in the second allele. PRC was determined by RIA and expressed as Goldblatt units (GU). Aldosterone was determined by RIA. Genotyping for disease-causing deletions and mutations was performed by Southern blot analysis, PCR and direct sequencing of CYP21. RESULTS PRC was significantly higher in patients off hydrocortisone replacement therapy than in age matched control subjects (basal 3.3 +/- 0.5 vs 1.2 +/- 0.2 GU 10(-4)/ml [mean +/- SEM], p<0.001; stimulated 8.6 +/- 0.5 vs 2.4 +/- 0.4 GU 10(-4)/ml; p<0.05). Upon treatment with dexamethasone, patients with CAH demonstrated a decrease in basal (2.1 +/- 0.5 GU 10(-4)/ml) but not in stimulated PRC (8.8 +/- 2.6 GU 10(-4)/ml). When dexamethasone treatment was supplemented by 9alphaF, both supine (0.9 +/- 0.1 GU 10(-4)/ml) and stimulated (1.6 +/- 0.3 GU 10(-4)/ml) PRC were suppressed into the normal range. Aldosterone concentrations were elevated after interrupting hydrocortisone treatment only under basal conditions. Dexamethasone caused a decrease below the reference level and 9alphaF resulted in further suppression of aldosterone concentration. CONCLUSIONS All patients were hemizygous for a CYP21 mutation that is usually considered not to be associated with clinically relevant salt loss. However, we demonstrated an aldosterone secretion disturbance in patients with SV CAH which cannot be corrected by glucocorticoid treatment alone. Additional mineralocorticoid therapy should be considered in order to suppress PRC and reduce the glucocorticoid dose required for adequate control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is common in chronic hemodialysis patients and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Several factors such as metabolic acidosis, hyperparathyroidism, and insulin as well as growth hormone (GH) resistance may lead to enhanced protein catabolism. Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) has been proposed as treatment of malnutrition because of its anabolic effects. METHODS In the present placebo-controlled, double blind study, the effects of three months of rhGH therapy on nutritional and anthropometric parameters, on bone metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD), as well as on polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) function and quality of life (QoL) were evaluated in 19 malnourished hemodialysis patients (10 females and 9 males) with a mean age of 59.3 +/- 13.4 years. RhGH (0.125 IU/kg) was given three times a week during the first four weeks and 0.25 IU/kg thereafter three times a week after each dialysis session. RESULTS Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) concentration rose significantly from 169.2 +/- 95.6 ng/mL to 262.9 +/- 144.4 ng/mL (p< 0.01) in the group receiving rhGH. Albumin, prealbumin, transferrin, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, cholinesterase, predialytic creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen showed no significant changes during the three months in both groups. Total body fat (%TBF) was slightly reduced after three months (P = NS) in the patients receiving GH, whereas lean body mass (LBM) remained stable during therapy. Procollagen I carboxy terminal peptide (PICP), a marker of bone formation, increased significantly after three months from 250.1 +/- 112.6 to 478.5 +/- 235.2 microg/L (P < 0.01) in the GH-treated patients, whereas parameters of bone resorption like telopeptide ICTP showed only a slight increase (50.3 +/- 18.5 vs. 70.0 +/- 39.5 microg/L, P = NS). BMD at the lumbar spine decreased significantly after three months in the treatment group (0.8 +/- 0.17 vs. 0.77 +/- 0.16 g/cm2, P < 0.01), whereas BMD at the femoral neck remained stable in both groups. Phagocytic activity of PMNLs increased significantly after three months of therapy with rhGH, whereas other parameters of PMNL function were not affected by GH. QoL was slightly improved in the GH treated group, but decreased markedly in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS Three months of treatment with rhGH in malnourished patients on chronic hemodialysis causes a significant increase in IGF-I levels without significant changes in nutritional and anthropometric parameters. In contrast, bone turnover was enhanced with an initial decrease in BMD at the lumbar spine, and phagocytic activity of PMNLs was increased.
