Abstract
Intense haemostatic interventions are required to avoid bleeding complications when surgical procedures are performed on haemophilia patients. The objective of this study was to establish an appropriate protocol for perioperative haemostatic management of haemophilic mice. We assessed the prophylactic haemostatic effects of normal mouse plasma (NMP) on haemophilia B (HB) mice for both a skin flap procedure and a laparotomy. When 500 μL of NMP was administered to the mice, plasma factor IX (FIX:C) levels peaked at 15.1% immediately after intravenous (IV) administration, at 6.1% 2 h after intraperitoneal (IP) administration and at 2.7% 6 h after subcutaneous administration. Administering 500 μL of NMP via IP or IV 30 min in advance enabled the skin flap procedure to be performed safely without any complications. After the laparotomy procedure, several mice in the IP administration group exhibited lethal bleeding, but all mice survived in the IV administration group. Anti-mouse FIX inhibitors did not develop, even after repetitive administrations of NMP. However, human FIX concentrates, especially plasma-derived concentrates, elicited the anti-human FIX inhibitors. The results show that administering 500 μL of NMP via IV or IP 30 min in advance enables surgical procedures to be safely performed on HB mice, and that IV administration is more desirable than IP if the procedure requires opening of the abdominal wall.

Dose indices in dental cone beam CT and correlation with dose-area product. Dentomaxillofac Radiol 2013; 42:20120362. Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the 2011 project "Safety and efficacy of a new and emerging dental X-ray modality (SEDENTEXCT)", it was suggested that dose index (DI) and dose-area product (DAP) could be easily measured and used as diagnostic reference levels (DRLs), which would help in the management of radiation doses to patients in optimum exposure settings. Such indices could be directly related to effective dose. The purposes of this study, therefore, were to measure and calculate the DI and DAP in cone beam CT (CBCT) machines and to evaluate the correlation between the two. METHODS Dose measurements were performed on three-dimensional cone beam CT (3D-CBCT) machines [3D Accuitomo (J. Morita Mfg. Corp., Kyoto, Japan), Veraviewepocs (J. Morita Mfg. Corp.) and CS9300 (Carestream, New York, NY)] by exposing a cylindrical poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom using a CT ionization chamber. These dose measurements were used for the calculation of Dose Indices 1 and 2, according to the methodology suggested by SEDENTEXCT. The DAP was measured using a DAP meter that was attached to the detector to cover the entire irradiated area. RESULTS The DI1 ranged from 53.6 mR to 216.6 mR, the DI2 ranged from 77.1 mR to 325.0 mR and the DAP ranged from 101.1 mGy cm(2) to 457.9 mGy cm(2), depending on the machines and exposure settings. Index 2 had a better correlation with the DAP than Index 1. CONCLUSIONS The DIs and DAP proposed by SEDENTEXCT may be useful for establishing DRLs for dental CBCT machines; however, further studies are necessary to determine which of these indices provide accurate dose estimates proportionally relating to the effective dose.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to measure the dose-area product (DAP) of limited-area cone beam CT (CBCT) units used by dental offices, and to evaluate the rationale of the DAP with an aid of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosemeter in measuring radiation dose. METHOD The DAPs of 21 CBCT units used in the dental offices of Tokyo and the surrounding areas from five different manufacturers were measured using OSL nanoDot dosemeter. An assembly of OSL dosemeters with an X-ray film was exposed by CBCT units at exposure parameters commonly used in each dental office. DAP values were then calculated as expressed in mGy cm(2). RESULTS DAP values ranged from 126.7 mGy cm(2) to 1476.9 mGy cm(2), depending on the units used. CONCLUSION OSL dosemeter coupled with film can be utilized for a large-scale study to measure DAP. The DAP values for individual CBCT units depend not only on the field of view, but also on the exposure parameters adapted by the dental offices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The SEDENTEXCT Project proposed quality assurance (QA) methods and introduced a QA image quality phantom. A new prototype was recently introduced that may be improved according to previous reports. The purpose of this study is to evaluate image quality in various protocols of three cone beam CT (CBCT) machines using the proposed QA phantom. METHODS Using three CBCT machines, nine image quality parameters, including image homogeneity (noise), uniformity, geometrical distortion, pixel intensity value, contrast resolution, spatial resolution [line pair (LP) chart, point spread function (PSF) and modulation transfer function (MTF)] and metal artefacts, were evaluated using a QA phantom proposed by SEDENTEXCT. Exposure parameters, slice thickness and field of view position changed variously, and the number of total protocols was 22. RESULTS Many protocols showed a uniform gray value distribution except in the minimum slice thickness image acquired using 3D Accuitomo 80 (Morita, Kyoto, Japan) and Veraviewepocs 3Df (Morita). Noise levels differed among the protocols. There was no geometric distortion, and the pixel intensity values were correlated with the CT value. Low contrast resolution differed among the protocols, but high contrast resolution performed well in all. Many protocols showed that the maximum line pair was larger than 1 LP mm(-1) but smaller than 3 LP mm(-1). PSF and MTF did not correlate well with the pixel size. The measured metal artefact areas varied for each device. CONCLUSIONS We studied the image quality of three CBCT machines using the SEDENTEXCT phantom. Image quality varied with exposure protocols and machines.

Abstract
The authors aimed to repair and regenerate articular cartilage with layered chondrocyte sheets, produced using temperature-responsive culture dishes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the humoral factors produced by layered chondrocyte sheets. Articular chondrocytes and synovial cells were harvested during total knee arthroplasty. After co-culture, the samples were divided into three groups: a monolayer, 7 day culture sheet group (group M); a triple-layered, 7 day culture sheet group (group L); and a monolayer culture group with a cell count identical to that of group L (group C). The secretion of collagen type 1 (COL1), collagen type 2 (COL2), matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP13), transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ), melanoma inhibitory activity (MIA) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Layered chondrocyte sheets produced the most humoral factors. PGE2 expression declined over time in group C but was significantly higher in groups M and L. TGFβ expression was low in group C but was significantly higher in groups M and L (p<0.05). Our results suggest that the humoral factors produced by layered chondrocyte sheets may contribute to cartilaginous tissue repair and regeneration.

Abstract
Rodent incisors exhibit pigmentation on their labial surfaces. Although previous studies have shown that this pigment is composed of iron, the existence of other elements has not been investigated. This study found that the lower incisors of CD61, also known as integrin β3, null mice (CD61(-/-)) lacked pigmentation. Although ameloblasts differentiated and formed enamel normally, no ferric ion accumulation was observed in maturation-stage ameloblasts in CD61(-/-) mice. Surface elements of control and CD61-/- lower incisors were compared by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS analysis detected C, Ca, N, O, and P on the labial surfaces of lower incisors of both mice, whereas Fe was detected only in control samples. No peak of non-ferrous metal or other element was detected in either group. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis of 18 iron-transportation-related genes with mRNA from maturation-stage ameloblasts and ALC, a pre-ameloblastic cell line, was performed. The results suggested that CD61 regulates the expressions of Slc11a2 and Slc40a1, both of which are involved in iron transportation in epithelial tissues. These results suggested that the pigment on the labial surface of mouse incisors is composed of Fe and that both anemia and reduction of iron-transporting proteins may cause the loss of pigmentation in CD61(-/-) mice.

Abstract
A new concept in chromatography is proposed that utilizes a temperature-responsive surface with a constant aqueous mobile phase. The surface of the silica stationary phase in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been modified with temperature-responsive polymers to exhibit temperature-controlled hydrophilic/hydrophobic changes. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) was grafted onto (aminopropyl)silica using an activated ester-amine coupling method. These grafted silica surfaces show hydrophilic properties at lower temperatures which, as temperature increases, transform to hydrophobic surface properties. The elution profile of five mixed steroids on an HPLC column packed with this material depends largely on the temperature of the aqueous mobile phase. Retention times increase with increasing temperature without any change in the eluent. Changes in the retention times of hydrophobic steroids were larger than those for hydrophilic steroids. The temperature-responsive interaction between PIPAAm-modified silica and these steroids is proposed to result from changes in the surface properties of the HPLC stationary phase by the transition of hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface-grafted IPAAm polymers. We demonstrate a novel and useful new chromatography system in which surface properties and the resulting function of the HPLC stationary phase are controlled by external temperature changes. This method should be effective in biological and biomedical separations of peptides and proteins using only aqueous mobile phases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the characteristics of an optically stimulated luminescence dosemeter (OSLD) for use in diagnostic radiology and to apply the OSLD in measuring the organ doses by panoramic radiography. METHODS The dose linearity, energy dependency and angular dependency of aluminium oxide-based OSLDs were examined using an X-ray generator to simulate various exposure settings in diagnostic radiology. The organ doses were then measured by inserting the dosemeters into an anthropomorphic phantom while using three panoramic machines. RESULTS The dosemeters demonstrated consistent dose linearity (coefficient of variation<1.5%) and no significant energy dependency (coefficient of variation<1.5%) under the applied exposure conditions. They also exhibited negligible angular dependency (≤ 10%). The organ doses of the X-ray as a result of panoramic imaging by three machines were calculated using the dosemeters. CONCLUSION OSLDs can be utilized to measure the organ doses in diagnostic radiology. The availability of these dosemeters in strip form proves to be reliably advantageous.

Enzastaurin has anti-tumour effects in lung cancers with overexpressed JAK pathway molecules. Br J Cancer 2012; 106:867-75. Abstract
BACKGROUND Enzastaurin, an oral serine-threonine kinase inhibitor, was initially developed as an ATP-competitive selective inhibitor against protein kinase Cβ. However, the mechanism by which enzastaurin contributes to tumourigenesis remains unclear. METHODS We analysed the anti-tumour effects of enzastaurin in 22 lung cancer cell lines to ascertain the potential for enzastaurin-based treatment of lung cancer. To identify molecules or signalling pathways associated with this sensitivity, we conducted a gene, receptor tyrosine kinases phosphorylation and microRNA expression profiling study on the same set of cell lines. RESULTS We identified eight genes by pathway analysis of molecules having gene-drug sensitivity correlation, and used them to build a support vector machine algorithm model by which sensitive cell lines were distinguished from resistant cell lines. Pathway analysis revealed that the JAK/STAT signalling pathway was one of the main ones involved in sensitivity to enzastaurin. Overexpression of JAK1 was observed in the sensitive cells by western blotting. Simultaneous administration of enzastaurin and JAK inhibitor inhibited enzastaurin-induced cell growth-inhibitory effect. Furthermore, lentiviral-mediated JAK1-overexpressing cells were more sensitive to enzastaurin than control cells. CONCLUSION Our results suggested that the JAK1 pathway may be used as a single predictive biomarker for enzastaurin treatment. The anti-tumour effect of enzastaurin should be evaluated in lung cancer with overexpressed JAK pathway molecules.

Abstract
This paper describes a cell culture monitoring system for regenerative medicine. To realize this monitoring system, a new culture vessel and a removable measurement unit were proposed. The measurement unit was installed in the culture vessel and it was used to measure important cell culture parameters (e.g., temperature, CO(2) level, and pH). Thus, the status of the culture could be monitored. In addition, we developed a novel noninvasive method based on spectrophotometry for measuring pH. This method is a non-contact method that permits noninvasive and contamination-free pH measurement. The spectroscopic pH measurements agreed well with pH measurements using an electrode. The error was within 0.02; thus, the new pH measurement method is sufficiently accurate for cell culture. This new system is expected to contribute to advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to compare the image generated by a classic panoramic machine equipped with a cadmium telluride sensor capable of digital tomosynthesis and special software with images produced by other popular panoramic X-ray machines using a charge-coupled device and native software for image capture. METHODS Panoramic images were made using a phantom of a human skull on Planmeca ProMax, Planmeca EC Proline, Kodak 8000 and PC-1000. With the last machine we used the PanoACT® software to adjust the entire arch and to adjust the image in selected regions of interest (ROIs). Ten viewers evaluated the images and provided the viewer data. ANOVA for repeated measures was used to compare the means by pairwise comparisons of means. RESULTS The image of the entire arch adjusted by the PanoACT® software was statistically superior to the images produced by other machines. The images generated and individually adjusted by PanoACT® were statistically superior to all other images. CONCLUSIONS The image generated by the cadmium telluride sensor has great potential and can be processed to create superior images to those taken with other machines. Furthermore, the ROI individual images enhanced by the PanoACT® were superior to the entire arch adjusted by the same software.

Incidence and risk factors of falling in ambulatory patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a prospective 1-year study. Osteoporos Int 2010; 21:1825-33. [PMID: 20119662 DOI: 10.1007/s00198-009-1150-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 81] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/06/2009] [Accepted: 11/12/2009] [Indexed: 11/26/2022]
Abstract
UNLABELLED A prospective 1-year study showed that fall incidence was 50% in women with rheumatoid arthritis. Multivariate analysis identified swollen joint count, use of antihypertensives or diuretics, one-leg standing time, and sway area measured by stabilometer as significant parameters associated with falls. INTRODUCTION Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may be at increased risk of falling because they frequently experience muscle weakness and stiff or painful joints. The aim of this study was to use a prospective design to determine the incidence of falls and their risk factors in women with RA. METHODS Eighty-four women aged 50 and over who had RA were enrolled. The mean age was 64.1 years. We evaluated postural stability, physical performance related to falls, disease activity, muscle volume, and bone density. The occurrence of falls was assessed every month for 1 year. Among 84 patients, 80 completed a 1-year observation. RESULTS Forty patients (50.0%) reported one or more falls, and two of them (5.0%) had fractures during the follow-up period. The fall group had more swollen joints and took more antihypertensives and/or diuretics. The fall group also had lower postural stability and tended to have reduced physical performance. The one-leg standing time was shorter, and the step-up-and-down test score was lower in the fall group. The sway area was larger in the fall group. DISCUSSION Multiple logistic regression analysis identified that number of swollen joints, use of antihypertensives or diuretics, shorter time standing on one foot, and the sway area were the most significant parameters associated with falls. CONCLUSION We concluded that fall rates in RA patients were higher than in the general population and that balance impairment or side effects of drugs may play a role in increasing the risk of falls.

Development of a new dental panoramic radiographic system based on a tomosynthesis method. Dentomaxillofac Radiol 2010; 39:47-53. Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop a new practical method to reconstruct a high-quality panoramic image in which radiographers would be free from the onerous task of correctly locating the patient's jaws within the image layer of the panoramic unit. In addition, dentists would be able to freely select any panoramic plane to be reconstructed after the acquisition of the raw scan data. A high-speed data acquisition device was used with a CdTe (cadmium telluride) semiconductor detector and a sophisticated digital signal-processing technique based on tomosynthesis was developed. The system processes many vertical strip images acquired with the detector and generates a high-resolution and high-contrast image. To apply the tomosynthesis technique to the acquired strip images correctly, the actual movement of the panoramic unit was measured, including the X-ray tube and detector, in a scan using a calibration phantom and the authors generated a shift amount table needed for the shift-and-add tomosynthesis operation. The results of the experiments with a PanoACT-1000 panoramic unit, which was a PC-1000 panoramic unit fitted with a high frame rate semiconductor detector SCAN-300FPC, demonstrated the capability of a tomosynthesis technique which, when applied to the strip images of a dry skull phantom, could change the location and inclination of an imaging plane. This system allowed the extraction of an optimum-quality panoramic image regardless of irregularities in patient positioning. Moreover, the authors could freely reconstruct a fine image of an arbitrary plane with different parameters from those used in the original data acquisition to study fine anatomical details in specific locations.

Abstract
A free-living, young adult, male Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) was rescued in Gifu, Japan in March 2009. The animal was weak and emaciated with neurological signs that included head tilt, tremor and tic. The brain showed no gross abnormality at necropsy, but microscopically there was severe meningoencephalitis associated with protozoa, which were morphologically consistent with the asexual developmental stage of Sarcocystis spp. The protozoa were immunohistochemically negative for Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum, but reacted weakly with antiserum specific for Sarcocystis cruzi. Analysis of the partial 18S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the protozoa were most closely related to an unidentified Sarcocystis species that was isolated from the white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons).

Abstract
Cell sheet technology (CST) is based on the use of thermoresponsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm). The surface of PIPAAms is formulated in such a way as to make its typical thickness <100 nm. In this review, we first focus on how the methods of PIPAAm-grafted surface preparations and functionalization are important to be able to harvest a functional cell sheet, to be further transplanted. Then, we present aspects of tissue mimics and three-dimensional reconstruction of a tissue in vitro. Finally, we give an overview of clinical applications and clinically relevant animal experimentations of the technology, such as cardiomyopathy, visual acuity, periodonty, oesophageal ulcerations and type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
SUMMARY Two longitudinal transmitted waves, fast and slow waves, were observed by employing a new quantitative ultrasound (QUS) method. The trabecular bone measurements generated by this method reflect three-dimensional structural information, and the new QUS parameters were able to identify vertebral fractures. INTRODUCTION The aims were to identify new quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters that based on new QUS method reflecting not only bone volume but also the microstructures of trabecular bone ex vivo and to observe how much they predict fracture risk in vivo. METHODS Ex vivo measurement: Three human femoral heads were used for the experiment. Attenuation of the slow wave, attenuation of the fast wave, speed of the slow wave, speed of the fast wave (SOFW), bone mass density of trabecular bone, and elastic modulus of the trabecular bone (EMTb) of each specimen were obtained using a new QUS method and compared with three-dimensional structural parameters measured by micro-computed tomography. In vivo measurement: Eighty-nine volunteers were enrolled, and the bone status in the distal radius was measured using a new QUS method. These parameters were compared with data evaluated by peripheral quantitative computed tomography and dual X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS Ex vivo measurement: SOFW and EMTb showed correlations with the parameter of trabecular anisotropy. In vivo measurement: The new QUS parameters were able to identify vertebral fractures. CONCLUSION The newly developed QUS technique reflects the three-dimensional structure and is a promising method to evaluate fracture risk.

Absorbed and effective doses from cone beam volumetric imaging for implant planning. Dentomaxillofac Radiol 2009; 38:79-85. [PMID: 19176649 DOI: 10.1259/dmfr/14769929] [Citation(s) in RCA: 104] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/05/2022] Open
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Volumetric CT using a cone beam has been developed by several manufacturers for dentomaxillofacial imaging. The purpose of this study was to measure doses for implant planning with cone beam volumetric imaging (CBVI) in comparison with conventional multidetector CT (MDCT). METHODS The two CBVI systems used were a 3D Accuitomo (J. Morita), including an image-intensifier type (II) and a flat-panel type (FPD), and a CB MercuRay (Hitachi). The 3D Accuitomo operated at 80 kV, 5 mA and 18 s. The CB MercuRay operated at 120 kV, 15 mA, 9.8 s. The MDCT used was a HiSpeed QX/i (GE), operated at 120 kV, 100 mA and 0.7 s, and its scan length was 77 mm for both jaws. Measurement of the absorbed tissue and organ doses was performed with an Alderson phantom, embedding the radiophotoluminescence glass dosemeter into the organs/tissues. The values obtained were converted into the absorbed dose. The effective dose as defined by the International Commission on Radiological Protection was then calculated. RESULTS The absorbed doses of the 3D Accuitomo of the organs in the primary beam ranged from 1-5 mGy, and were several to ten times lower than other doses. The effective dose of the 3D Accuitomo ranged from 18 muSv to 66 muSv, and was an order of magnitude smaller than the others. In conclusion, these results show that the dose in the 3D Accuitomo is lower than the CB MercuRay and much less than MDCT.

High prevalence of vitamin K and D deficiency and decreased BMD in inflammatory bowel disease. Osteoporos Int 2009; 20:935-42. Abstract
SUMMARY Vitamin K and D deficiency and decreased bone mineral density (BMD) were highly prevalent in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially Crohn's disease (CD). Dietary intakes of these vitamins, however, were above the Japanese adequate intakes in IBD patients, suggesting that malabsorption is the basis for hypovitaminosis K and D and decreased BMD. INTRODUCTION We have studied the possible involvement of vitamin K and D deficiency in the pathogenesis of decreased BMD in IBD. METHODS Seventy patients with IBD were evaluated for their BMD; plasma levels of vitamin K; phylloquinone (PK), menaquinone-7 (MK-7), and 25OH-D; serum PTH, protein induced by vitamin K absence (PIVKA-II), and undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) levels; and their food intake. RESULTS Compared with ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, CD patients had significantly lower plasma vitamin K and 25OH-D concentrations; significantly higher serum levels of PTH, PIVKA-II, and ucOC; and significantly lower BMD scores at almost all measurement sites. More IBD patients were vitamin K deficient in bone than in liver. Multiple regression analyses revealed that low plasma concentrations of vitamin K and 25OH-D were independent risk factors for low BMD and that they were associated with the patients' fat intake, but not with their intake of these vitamins. CONCLUSION IBD patients have high prevalence of decreased BMD and vitamin K and D deficiency probably caused by malabsorption of these vitamins.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Health-related quality of life in elderly women with sustained incident fractures was assessed prospectively for 1 year, using the EuroQol standard. Loss of QOL was more severe in patients after hip or vertebral fractures than those with wrist fracture. QOL was not completely restored in patients suffering from hip fracture. INTRODUCTION Osteoporosis-related fractures decrease mobility, social interaction, and emotional well-being. All of these characteristics determine health-related quality of life (HR-QOL). In this study, we assessed HR-QOL in elderly women following incident clinical fractures. METHODS Thirty-seven patients with hip fractures (mean age 76.1 years), 35 with vertebral fractures (mean age 72.6 years), and 50 with wrist fractures (mean age 68.6 years) were enrolled. HR-QOL was prospectively measured using EuroQol (EQ-5D) before the fracture, 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after the fracture. RESULTS During the observation period, reduction of EQ-5D values was greatest in the hip fracture group. In the wrist fracture group, EQ-5D values at 6 months after the fracture showed recovery; however, in the hip and vertebral fracture groups, recovery was significantly lower than before the fracture. One year after the fracture, EQ-5D values were not significantly different from prefracture values in the vertebral and wrist fracture groups, but remained significantly lower in the hip fracture group. CONCLUSIONS Loss of QOL was more severe in patients after hip or vertebral fractures than in patients with wrist fracture. HR-QOL was not completely restored in patients suffering from hip fracture.

Abstract
SUMMARY Hip fracture incidence from 2004 to 2006 in the Tottori prefecture of Japan was investigated and compared with previously reported rates. The age- and gender-specific incidence of hip fracture in the Tottori prefecture has not plateaued, as has been reported for populations in Northern Europe or North America. INTRODUCTION Recent data from Northern Europe and North America indicate that the incidence of hip fracture has plateaued, whereas most reports from Asia indicate that the incidence is increasing. The aims of this study were to investigate the recent incidence of hip fracture in the Tottori prefecture, Japan, and to compare it with previous reports. METHODS All hip fractures in patients aged 35 years and older occurring between 2004 and 2006 were surveyed in all of the hospitals from the Tottori prefecture. The age- and gender-specific incidence rates were then calculated. Using these and previously reported data, the estimated number of hip fracture patients was determined using the age- and gender-specific incidence rates in each year from 1986 to 2006. RESULTS The survey identified 851, 906, and 1,059 patients aged 35 years and older, in 2004, 2005, and 2006 respectively. The residual lifetime risk of hip fracture for individuals at 50 years of age was estimated to be 5.6% for men and 20.0% for women. The estimated number of patients from 1986 to 2006 showed a significant increase over time for both genders. CONCLUSIONS The age- and gender-specific incidence of hip fracture in the Tottori prefecture, Japan has not plateaued for either gender.

Analysis of soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 secreted from cultured corneal and oral mucosal epithelial cell sheets in vitro. Br J Ophthalmol 2009; 93:263-7. Abstract
BACKGROUND In clinical trials, eyes transplanted with cultured oral mucosal epithelial cell sheets have shown increased neovascularisation compared with eyes treated with cultured corneal epithelial cell sheets. As reported recently, soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (soluble VEGFr-1) is a main factor to maintain a corneal avascularity. AIM To investigate soluble VEGFr-1 of cultured corneal epithelial cells (CCE) and cultured oral mucosal epithelial cells (COE) in vitro. METHODS Rabbit corneal and oral mucosal epithelial cells were co-cultured with mitomycin C-treated NIH/3T3 cells on culture plates. After CCE and COE were multilayered, culture medium was replaced by basal medium and incubated. Protein secretion of soluble VEGFr-1 was assessed in conditioned medium from CCE and COE by ELISA. Angiogenic potential was examined by invasion, migration assays with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in addition to recombinant soluble VEGFr-1. RESULTS CCE secreted a significantly higher amount of soluble VEGFr-1 than did COE. Recombinant soluble VEGFr-1 significantly suppressed HUVEC migration induced by COE, without suppression in CCE. In conclusion, these findings suggest that low protein levels of soluble VEGFr-1 may lead to corneal neovascularisation after COE sheet transplantation.
