Spatiotemporal distribution and potential sources of atmospheric microplastic deposition in a semiarid urban environment of Northwest China

In this study, the spatiotemporal distribution of microplastic deposition was investigated through ordinary Kriging interpolation, and the potential sources of microplastic deposition were identified by using Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model. The results showed that the total deposition flux of microplastics ranged from 79.5 to 810.0 p/(m²·d). The shapes of microplastics could be divided into 4 shapes: fiber, fragment, film, and pellet. Seven polymer types of microplastics were identified, including polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Most microplastics were tiny and small sizes (≤ 500 μm) and colorless. Through model analysis and survey, microplastic deposition came from the study region, and the potential sources might be plastic products and wastes. The seasons with the highest and lowest total deposition flux were summer (535.5 p/(m²·d)) and winter (197.5 p/(m²·d)), respectively. The months of the highest and lowest total deposition flux were June 2021 (681.4 p/(m²·d)) and January 2022 (112.2 p/(m²·d)), respectively. Most fibers (PET, PA, PP) and fragments (PP) were distributed in populous areas such as commercial centers and residential areas. Abundant fragments (PET, PS, PE) and films (PE, PVC) were distributed around salvage stations. Almost all of the pellets (PE, PMMA) were found in the factory. Our results suggested that the temporal distribution of microplastic deposition was influenced by precipitation and mean temperature of air, and the spatial distribution of microplastic deposition was influenced by sources and population density.

Microplastic pollution on hiking and running trails in Australian protected environments

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous worldwide, present even in remote areas of the natural environment. Hiking and trail running are a source of MPs on recreational trails in protected environments, which are characterised by high biodiversity and natural, ecological or cultural significance. Our understanding of the risks of microplastic pollution is impeded however by a lack of information on MPs present in the soil environment in such areas. This study characterised the quantity and physicochemical characteristics of MPs in two conservation areas in south-eastern Australia: 1) the adjacent Duval Nature Reserve and Dumaresq Dam Reserve, and 2) the Washpool and Gibraltar Range National Parks. We measured atmospheric deposition over a six-month period in the Reserves, and baseline amounts of MPs on recreational trails in the Reserves and National Parks. Atmospheric deposition averaged 17.4 MPs m^-2 day^-1 and was dominated by fibres, comprising 84 % of MPs. Microplastics detected on trail surfaces ranged from 162.5 ± 41.6 MPs/linear metre to 168.7 ± 18.5 MPs/linear metre and exhibited a very wide range of physical and chemical characteristics. The majority of MPs on the trail surfaces comprised polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene, and 47-71 % were fibres. Microplastics were attributed to clothing, footwear, litter, and diffuse sources. Minimising and preventing MP pollution, however, is complex given there are multiple direct and diffuse sources, and several factors influencing increased MP deposition and retention in the environment.

New insight into the geochemical mechanism and behavior of heavy metals in soil and dust fall of a typical copper smelter

The desorption mechanism of heavy metals (HMs) in soil around the mining region are complex and affected by multiple pollution sources, including sewage discharge and atmospheric deposition. Meanwhile, pollution sources would change soil physical and chemical properties (mineralogy and organic matter), thus affecting the bioavailability of HMs. This study aimed to investigate the pollution source of HMs (Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soil near mining, and further evaluate influence mechanism of dust fall on HMs pollution in soil by desorption dynamics processes and pH-dependence leaching test. Result presented that dust fall is the primary pollution source to HMs accumulation in soil. Additionally, the result of mineralogical analysis in dust fall revealed that quartz, kaolinite, calcite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite are the major mineralogical phases by XRD and SEM-EDS. Meanwhile, the abundance of kaolinite and calcite in dust fall is higher than in soil, which is the primary reason of higher acid-base buffer capacity of dust fall. Correspondingly, the weakened or disappeared of hydroxyl after the adding acid extraction (0-0.4 mmol· g-1) demonstrated that hydroxyl is the main participants of HMs absorption in soil and dust fall. These combined findings suggested that atmospheric deposition not only increases the pollution loading of HMs in soil, but also changes the mineral phase composition of soil, which would increase the adsorption capacity and bioavailability of HMs in soil. This is very remarkable that heavy metals in soil influenced by dust fall pollution could be released preferentially when soil pH is changed. The present results of this study would provide efficient and scientific targeted strategies for pollution control of HMs in soil near mining areas.

Effects of atmospheric deposition on heavy metals accumulation in agricultural soils: Evidence from field monitoring and Pb isotope analysis

Atmospheric deposition is an essential pathway of heavy metals (HMs) from the atmosphere to soils, while few studies assess the effects and contributions of atmospheric deposition on HMs accumulations in agricultural soils from the field and regional scales. In this study, eleven representative field monitoring sites from industrial areas, agricultural areas, and reference site in a typical rapid industrial development region were selected to determine the effects of atmospheric deposition on soil HMs accumulation. Industrial activities significantly increased the deposited particles flux from atmospheric deposition, with annual particles fluxes in industrial areas being 1.83 and 1.90 times higher than in agricultural areas and reference site, respectively. Although the HMs deposition fluxes had decreased significantly with time by literature comparison, the deposition fluxes of Cd and Pb were still at high levels in this study area. Precipitation was the key factor affecting seasonal variations of atmospheric HMs deposition. Lead isotope analysis indicated that atmospheric Pb originated from coal combustion, and atmospheric deposition was the primary source of Pb contamination in agricultural soil adjacent to industries. This study provided insight into the effects of atmospheric deposition on agricultural soil HMs accumulations at the regional scale and an important theoretical basis for source-preventing soil HMs contamination in industrial developed and other similar areas.

A database of modeled gridded dry deposition velocities for 45 gaseous species and three particle size ranges across North America

The dry deposition process refers to the flux loss of an atmospheric pollutant due to uptake of the pollutant by the earth's surfaces. Dry deposition flux of a chemical species is typically calculated as the product of its surface-layer concentration and its dry deposition velocity (V_d). Field measurement based V_d data are very scarce or do not exist for many chemical species considered in chemistry transport models. In the present study, gaseous and particulate dry deposition schemes were applied to generate a database of hourly V_d for 45 gaseous species and three particle size ranges for two years (2016-2017) at a 15 km by 15 km horizontal resolution across North America. Hourly V_d of the 45 gaseous species ranged from < 0.001 to 4.6 cm/sec across the whole domain, with chemical species-dependent median (mean) values being in the range of 0.018-1.37 cm/sec (0.05-1.43 cm/sec). The spatial distributions of the two-year average V_d showed values higher than 1-3 cm/sec for those soluble and reactive species over certain land types. Soluble species have the highest V_d over water surfaces, while insoluble but reactive species have the highest V_d over forests. Hourly V_d of PM_2.5 across the whole domain ranged from 0.039 to 0.75 cm/sec with median (mean) value of 0.18 (0.20) cm s^-1, while the mean V_d for PM_2.5-10 is twice that of PM_2.5. Uncertainties in the modeled V_d are typically on the order of a factor of 2.0 or larger, which needs to be considered when applying the dataset in other studies.

Characteristics, sources and influencing factors of atmospheric deposition of microplastics in three different ecosystems of Beijing, China

As the research on microplastics (MPs) has intensified, more attention has been paid to MPs deposition in the atmosphere. This study further explores and compares the characteristics, the possible sources and influencing factors of deposition of MPs in three different ecosystems: forest, agricultural and residential area in Beijing. It was found that the deposited plastics were mostly white or black fibres, with PET and RY as the main MPs types. The range of deposition fluxes was 67.06-461.02 item·m^-2·d^-1, with highest deposition in residential area and lowest in forest, significant differences in MPs characteristics between environments. Based on MPs composition and shape, combined with backward trajectory analysis, the main sources of MPs were found to be textiles. Deposition of MPs was found to be influenced by environmental and meteorological factors. Factors such as gross domestic product and population density had a significant impact on the deposition flux, while wind played a diluting role for atmospheric MPs. The study investigated the characteristics of MPs in different ecosystems which may help to understand the transport patterns of MPs and is of great importance for the management of MPs pollution.

Comparison of vertical and horizontal atmospheric deposition of nitrate at Central European mountain-top sites during three consecutive winters

Nitrogen (N) deposition, a key process of atmospheric self-cleaning, represents an important pathway for nutrients and pollutants to ecosystems. Enhanced N deposition flux contributes to acidification, eutrophication and loss of biodiversity. N-NO₃^- concentrations in rime and snow were measured at 10 Czech plots situated in borderline mountains in 2009-2011 winters. The results were put in context with data-driven geostatistical modelling results of annual wet vertical and horizontal deposition. Our hypotheses were that: (i) rime and snow would be more polluted in the highly industrialized north than in the south, (ii) the N-NO₃^- concentrations would differ in the three winters studied, and (iii), that N-NO₃^- rime deposition is not negligible in Central European mountain ranges. Our results indicated that winter N-NO₃^- concentrations were significantly higher in rime than in snow and that there were much larger between-site differences in N-NO₃^- concentrations for rime than for snow. Relatively large differences were found between individual years. Atmospheric input of N-NO₃^- in winter was dominated by vertical deposition, i.e., snow. Modelled results showed that mean winter rime deposition corresponded to about 6-25 %, and mean winter snow deposition made up 25-72.5 % of mean annual N-NO₃^- wet-only deposition. Model N-NO₃^-occult deposition estimated from throughfall and total (wet and dry) deposition is highly uncertain, however: N throughfall is not a relevant proxy for estimation of realistic total N deposition due to N exchange between the tree canopy and atmosphere.

Contamination of planktonic food webs in the Mediterranean Sea: Setting the frame for the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE oceanographic cruise (spring 2019)

This paper looks at experiential feedback and the technical and scientific challenges tied to the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise that took place in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2019. This cruise proposes an innovative approach to investigate the accumulation and transfer of inorganic and organic contaminants within the planktonic food webs. We present detailed information on how the cruise worked, including 1) the cruise track and sampling stations, 2) the overall strategy, based mainly on the collection of plankton, suspended particles and water at the deep chlorophyll maximum, and the separation of these particles and planktonic organisms into various size fractions, as well as the collection of atmospheric deposition, 3) the operations performed and material used at each station, and 4) the sequence of operations and main parameters analysed. The paper also provides the main environmental conditions that were prevailing during the campaign. Lastly, we present the types of articles produced based on work completed by the cruise that are part of this special issue.

Anthropogenic activity and millennial climate variability affect Holocene mercury deposition of an alpine wetland near the largest mercury mine in China

Mercury (Hg) is a potentially toxic element that can be transported globally through the atmosphere, once deposited in the environment, has strong bioaccumulation and extreme toxicity in food webs, especially in wetland ecosystems. Anthropogenic Hg emissions have enhanced Hg deposition by 3-5 times since the industrial revolution, and the mining and smelting of Hg ore are important emission sources. However, the dynamics in Hg deposition around the largest Hg mine in China before the industrial revolution and their driving forces remain poorly explored. Here we reconstruct the atmospheric Hg depositional fluxes (named here Hg influx (Hg_influx)) during the Holocene using a 450-cm alpine wetland sediment core taken from the Jiulongchi wetland, which is only 65 km to the Wanshan Mercury Mine. Our record shows an abrupt rapid increase in Hg concentration since 2500 cal yr BP, suggesting that Hg mining in southwest China may have started before the establishment of the Qin dynasty. Two major Hg_influx peaks were found during the periods 10,000-6000 and 6000 - 3800 cal yr BP, with an increase in Hg deposition by a factor of 4-8. These two peaks are also found in other terrestrial archives from several sites across the Northern Hemisphere. We speculate that critical millennial-scale climate changes, i.e., the Holocene Climatic Optimum (HCO) and the Mid-Holocene Transition (MHT), were the potential triggers of these two Hg_influx peaks. This study highlights the importance of climatic variability and local Hg mining in controlling atmospheric Hg deposition during the Holocene.

Spatial distribution and source analysis of airborne trace metal deposition using moss biomonitoring in Huai'an, China

Terrestrial mosses are tracers for studying atmospheric trace metal deposition and pollution. Here, Al, Fe, Zn, Mn, Ba, Cu, V, Cr, Pb, Ni, Co, and Cd concentrations in mosses from Huai'an, China, were measured to investigate their contamination level, spatial distribution, and sources. The average concentration of all the metals (except Ni) was much higher than those in Albania, a "hotspot" of toxic metal contamination in Europe. The pollution degree of the metals varied significantly: moderate contamination by Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, V, and Cd; slight contamination by Ba, Cu, Ni, and Pb; and suspected contamination by Co. Based on the Nemerow index (P_N), only 8% of the moss samples were graded as moderate pollution, while the remaining 92% were rated as heavy pollution, with Cd and Zn contributing the most. The potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated a moderate potential ecological risk from the metals in Huai'an, with the atmosphere most heavily polluted by Cd. Further, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to confirm the metal contamination sources and allocate their source contributions in Huai'an mosses. The results showed that the source contributions of industrial activities related to metal smelting, textile dyestuff and agricultural activities, mining development, natural source, and coal burning and traffic emission accounted for 28.86%, 20.29%, 19.83%, 17.98%, and 13.04%, respectively.

Isotopic characteristics and sources of suspended particulate organic matter in a reservoir of Chinese desert grassland areas: the influence of dry and wet seasons and the role of atmospheric deposition

It is essential to study the sources of suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) for a comprehensive understanding of the carbon and nitrogen cycles in reservoir located in desert grassland areas. Atmospheric deposition is an important pathway for human and natural nutrients to enter water ecosystems. Previous studies have focused on hotspot areas, but neglected the impact of atmospheric deposition on reservoirs in desert grassland regions with little rainfall, long freezing periods, and a dusty climate. In this study, we measured the contents of organic carbon, total nitrogen, the isotopic composition (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N), and the ratio of total organic carbon to total nitrogen (C/N ratios) for SPOM in the reservoir and its watershed across both dry and wet seasons using carbon and nitrogen isotope techniques. We also analyzed the sources of SPOM in the reservoir using the end-member mixing model. The results showed that the variation range in SPOM for δ¹³C was - 28.3 to - 21.8‰; for δ¹⁵N, it was 2.3 to 8.7‰; and the C/N ratios were 8.12 to 19.12. The variation range of δ¹³C for atmospheric particulate matter was - 20.0 to - 25.0‰; for δ¹⁵N, it was 2.3 to 11.9‰; and the C/N ratios ranged from 7.22 to 17.81. The main sources of carbon in the SPOM were atmospheric deposition and terrestrial C3 plants. The origins were significantly different between the wet and dry periods. Atmospheric nitrogen deposition and soil erosion were the primary sources of particulate nitrogen in the reservoir.

Direct absorption of atmospheric lead by rapeseed siliques is the leading cause of seed lead pollution

Rapeseed cultivation is a novel approach to safely utilizing lead (Pb) contaminated farmland. However, the mechanism of Pb absorption in seeds remains uncertain. A field experiment was conducted to explore this mechanism with two contrasting treatments: rapeseed exposed to atmospheric deposition and non-exposed treatment. Non-exposed treatment ultimately decreased Pb content in leaf, silique, and seed by 46.7%, 53.7%, and 53.6%, respectively. Sub-microstructure analysis further confirmed that rapeseed leaves and siliques could directly absorb atmospheric Pb. In addition, Pb isotope analysis indicates that atmospheric deposition is the primary source of silique and seed Pb. The root and silique organs had relative Pb contributions of 28.0% and 72.0%, respectively, to seed. Thus, the direct absorption of atmospheric Pb by siliques during the filling stage was found to be the leading cause of seed Pb pollution.

Wet depositions of cations in forests across NADP, EMEP, and EANET monitoring networks over the last two decades

Studies focused on emissions and acid deposition of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) and the consequent precipitation acidity have a long history. However, atmospheric depositions of cations play a critical role in buffering precipitation acidity, and providing cationic nutrients for vegetation growth lacks sufficient studies equally. The spatiotemporal patterns of cation depositions and their neutralization potential across broad scales remain unclear. Through synthesizing the long-term data in forest sites (n = 128) derived from three monitoring networks (NADP in Northern America, EMEP in Europe, and EANET in East Asia) on wet deposition of cations (Na+, NH4-N, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+), this study assesses the temporal changes and spatial patterns of cation depositions and their neutralization potential over the last two decades. The results showed that the depositions of cationic nutrients were considerably higher in EANET compared to NADP and EMEP. The depositions of sea salt-associated sodium exhibited a significant transition from marine (> 15 kg ha-1 year-1) to inland (< 3.0 kg ha-1 year-1) forest sites attributable to the precipitation quantity and influences of sea spray. The higher emissions of NH3 and particulate matter in East Asia explained the higher cation depositions in EANET than NADP and EMEP. The annual trends of cations revealed that only 20-30% of the forest sites showed significant changing trends and the sites widely spread across the three networks. Possibly, base cation (BC) deposition has reached a low and stable condition in NADP and EMEP, while it has high spatial heterogeneity in the temporal change in EANET. The difference in BC deposition among the three networks reflects their distinct development of economy. Our synthesis indicates that the annual trends of neutralization factor (NF) in NADP can be explained by the declining of acid potential (AP), not by neutralization potential (NP) as BC deposition has been stably low over the past two decades. Whereas, the concurrent decreases of AP and NP in EMEP or plateau period of both AP and NP in EANET have come to a standstill of acid neutralizing capacity.

Magneto-chemical characterisation of Saharan dust deposited on snow in Poland

Recent research has convincingly shown the advantages of combining environmental magnetism and geochemical analyses for the proxy estimation of anthropogenic pollution due to their atmospheric deposition in local environments. Few studies have also focused on anthropogenic particles deposited on snow. However, papers reporting on Sahara dust particles deposited on snow in central Europe and which involve magnetic methods are missing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the magnetic features of the SDE recorded in snowfall in this part of Europe (i.e. Poland). Our aim was to provide the magnetic characteristics and chemical elemental compositions of a snow horizon containing Saharan dust deposited near the Polish Jakuszyce meteorological station during a snowfall event that occurred from the 1st to the February 7, 2021. Samples of snow with and without Saharan dust were analysed with respect to iron oxide contents (magnetic susceptibility, hysteresis loop, magnetic remanence acquisition) and compared with chemical compositions. Our results revealed the presence of both ferrimagnetic magnetite and antiferromagnetic hematite in the dust-enriched horizon, and the diamagnetic behaviour of the reference layer consisting of 'pure' snow. The samples recorded the presence of geogenic elements such as Al, Fe, Mn, and Ti, anthropogenic elements such as As, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, and nutrients including Ca and K. The total concentrations of geogenic elements, nutrients, and anthropogenic elements in the snow samples with deposited Saharan dust were, respectively, >3700, >320, and >110 times greater than in the samples without Saharan dust. These findings may serve as reference data for a variety of environmental magnetic studies.

Children's playgrounds contain more microplastics than other areas in urban parks

Children spend many hours in urban parks and playgrounds, where the tree canopy could filter microplastics released from the surrounding urban hotspots. However, the majority of children's playgrounds also contain plastic structures that could potentially release microplastics. To assess if the children's playgrounds pose a higher exposure risk than other places inside the park, we evaluate the extent of microplastic contamination in the sand, soil, and leaf samples from 19 playgrounds inside urban parks in Los Angeles, CA, USA. The average microplastic concentration in sand samples collected inside the playground was 72 p g-1, and >50 % of identified plastics were either polyethylene or polypropylene. Microplastic concentrations inside the playgrounds were on average >5 times greater than concentrations outside the playgrounds in the park, indicating that children playing within the playground may be exposed to more microplastics than children playing outside the playground in the same park. By comparing the microplastic composition found inside and outside the playgrounds with the plastic composition of the plastic structures in the playground, we show that plastic structures and other products used inside the playgrounds could contribute to elevated microplastic concentration. The population density was slightly correlated with a microplastic concentration in the park soil but did not correlate with microplastic concentration inside the playgrounds. Therefore, playgrounds in urban parks may have microplastic exposure risks via inhalation or ingestion via hand-to-mouth transfer.

Sources and transformations of nitrate in Qixiangcuo Lake and its inflow rivers in the northern Tibetan Plateau

Human activities and climate change input more reactive nitrogen into alpine lakes. Alpine saline lakes are usually located in endorheic watersheds at high-altitude areas, with no other drainage methods than evaporation, and are prone to accumulate nutrients. Meanwhile, alpine saline lakes are usually oligotrophic and sensitive to reactive nitrogen inputs, and even modest reactive nitrogen inputs may have significant effects on them, such as eutrophication. Nitrate is the main form of reactive nitrogen in lakes; therefore, clarifying the sources and transformations of nitrate in alpine saline lakes is important to prevent or mitigate eutrophication in alpine saline lakes. In this study, the sources and transformations of nitrate in Qixiangcuo Lake and its inflow rivers in the northern Tibetan Plateau were identified using dual nitrate isotopes and hydrochemistry. The results show that (1) the ranges of NO₃^- concentrations, δ¹⁵N - NO₃^-, and δ¹⁸O - NO₃^- values were 3.6 ~ 26.1 μg/L, - 10.5 to + 6.0‰, and - 10.4 to + 9.2‰ in Qixiangcuo Lake and 194.4 ~ 728.1 μg/L, + 5.8 ~  + 8.8‰, and - 1.9 to + 2.4‰ in its inflow rivers, respectively. The NO₃^- concentrations and δ¹⁵N - NO₃^- values were significantly lower in Qixiangcuo Lake than in its inflow rivers (P < 0.05). (2) The main sources of nitrate in both surface water and bottom water of Qixiangcuo Lake were ammonium in atmospheric deposition (mean probability estimate (MPE) 41.0% and 32.2%, respectively) and livestock manure (MPE 28.9% and 21.7%, respectively). The main sources of nitrate in the inflow rivers of Qixiangcuo Lake were domestic sewage (MPE 35.7%) and livestock manure (MPE 29.6%). (3) The main nitrogen transformation process in Qixiangcuo Lake was nitrification. The conservative mixing of multiple sources controlled the nitrate concentration and isotopic composition of Qixiangcuo Lake. Improvement in grazing area planning and the installation of sewage treatment facilities are effective measures to prevent eutrophication in Qixiangcuo Lake and its inflow rivers.

Atmospheric deposition and trajectories of antimony in Central Europe

Antimony (Sb) concentrations were measured in wet atmospheric deposition at 10 high-elevation sites in the Czech Republic (Central Europe) during three winter seasons (2009-2011). Soluble and insoluble Sb forms were quantified in snow (vertical deposition) and rime (horizontal deposition) on mountain summits located equidistantly near the Czech borders with Austria, Germany and Poland. The highest Sb concentrations were found in the soluble form in rime (0.47 μg L^-1), while the lowest Sb concentrations were those in the insoluble form in snow (0.017 μg L^-1). The estimated average Sb deposition rate in Central Europe amounted to 1.3. 10^-4 g m^-2 yr^-1. Most Sb was deposited in the soluble form in snow (7.9. 10^-5 g m^-2 yr^-1), followed by the soluble form in rime (3.5. 10^-5 g m^-2 yr^-1). The corresponding insoluble fraction contained less Sb, namely 1.2. 10^-5 g m^-2 yr^-1 in snow and 2.3. 10^-6 g m^-2 yr^-1 in rime. The average Sb deposition in Central Europe, measured at an altitude of 1000 m a.s.l., was by six orders of magnitude higher compared to Sb deposition in the Arctic (7. 10^-10 g m^-2 yr^-1), and by four orders of magnitude lower compared to Sb deposition in a Sb-Hg mining district in China (7 g m^-2 yr^-1). Using the HYSPLIT model, backward trajectories of air masses indicated that the Sb sources were predominantly situated in Upper and Lower Silesia.

Vanadium Contamination in Soil and Atmospheric Deposition in Albania

By examining and evaluating the vanadium content in topsoil and moss samples, this study sought to better understand vanadium contamination in soil and atmospheric deposition. In the research area, Hypnium cupressiforme sps. moss is used. According to different distribution patterns and the lack of a link between vanadium in moss and soil samples studied by correlation analysis, no interactions between substrate soil and moss samples were investigated. Maximum vanadium concentrations (13.2 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg, respectively) were found in both moss and soil samples near the Cu mineral-rich Gjegjan area. Using lithium-normalized data on vanadium, the effect of anthropogenic activity on the vanadium in moss and soil samples is examined. There were no relationships between concentration and normalized data in moss and soil samples, showing the simultaneous effects of natural and anthropogenic sources of vanadium in the research area. Country-specific trends revealed no change for vanadium since 2010 in Albania.

Atmospheric deposition of microplastics in the megalopolis (Shanghai) during rainy season: Characteristics, influence factors, and source

Urban areas are the hardest hit by microplastic pollution, and deposition is an important part of microplastic migration and transport in the atmosphere, therefore, the study of microplastics in an urban atmospheric deposition is of great significance. This study aims to investigate the deposition characteristics of atmospheric microplastics in megapolis, to clarify the influence of meteorological and anthropogenic factors, and to analyze the sources of atmospheric microplastics. Six sampling sites in Shanghai were selected to collect atmospheric deposition samples during the rainy season. The mean deposition flux of microplastics was 3261.22 ± 2847.99 P·m^-2·d^-1 (median: 2559.70 P·m^-2·d^-1), and the types were mainly polyamide (PA, 27.79 %), polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 27.29 %), polypropylene (PP, 16.95 %), and polyvinyl fluoride (PVF, 12.88 %). The microplastic with the particle size of <1000 μm accounted for 88.23 %, and the shape was mainly fiber (73.55 %). The results of correlation analysis and variance analysis of microplastic characteristics with meteorological and anthropogenic factors (land-use, atmospheric pollutants, and urban indicators) showed that wind and precipitation had effects on deposition flux, size and shape, and were more significant at small scales (individual cities), while at large scales, the population was the main influence of microplastics. Atmospheric microplastics in Shanghai may be dominated by exogenous sources, through a combination of microplastic characteristics, wind and backward trajectories. This study further reveals the fate of urban atmospheric microplastics, which has implications for the study of global microplastic pollution.

The atmospheric microplastics deposition contributes to microplastic pollution in urban waters

Identifying and understanding the potential sources delivering microplastics into the urban water environment is imperative for microplastic pollution control. However, how atmospheric deposition contributes to microplastic pollution in the urban water environment is unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the contribution of atmospheric deposition to microplastic pollution in urban waters based on the analysis of the atmospheric deposition characteristics in the urban area. The results showed that microplastic deposition fluxes during wet weather and dry weather varied from 1.1 × 10³±0.06×10³ to 3.5 × 10³±0.3 × 10³ particles/m²/day and 0.91×10³±0.09×10³ to 1.6 × 10³±0.1 × 10³ particles/m²/day, respectively. The microplastics deposition flux showed moderate to strong correlations to atmospheric particulate matter concentrations, especially the PM2.5 concentration (R² = 0.76-0.93), suggesting the regularly monitored PM2.5 concentration might be served as an indicator for microplastics deposition flux estimation. The deposited microplastics were mainly transparent fragments with an average size of 51-67 μm. Polyethylene and polypropylene were the most abundant plastic polymer, followed by polyethylene terephthalate and polyamide. The comparison of microplastics collected during different weather conditions suggested that rain events could increase microplastics deposition fluxes when air quality conditions are similar. Particularly, rains promoted the deposition of fibrous microplastics as well as smaller microplastics. The estimated daily microplastics deposition in the whole city region suggested more microplastics were deposited in summer and winter. The total quantity of microplastics deposited in the urban environment could reach 1.7-12 times of those discharged from treated wastewater. Among them, 10% would directly deposit to urban waters in the studied city region, while the others may also enter the urban waters through runoff. The results of this study highlighted that the atmospheric microplastics deposition is an important source for microplastics, especially smaller ones, to enter the urban waters, which could not be ignored during microplastics pollution control.

Excess Cr and Ni in top soil: Comparing the effect of geology, diffuse contamination, and biogenic influence

Chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) are among the elements that are most mined, processed and used in modern industry and society. A realistic estimate of the diffuse contamination that has left a footprint on soil during the last 200 years by worldwide industrialization requires recognition and assessment of the dominant natural and anthropogenic sources. The relations between geogenic, anthropogenic, and biogenic Cr and Ni sources are estimated from eight large-scale geochemical surveys, by comparing the cumulative distribution functions (CDF) of the elements in top- and sub soil using cumulative probability (CP) diagrams. This method makes it possible to estimate the effect of long-term diffuse contamination on soil without monitoring. The method offers a cheaper and more reliable method for estimating diffuse contamination at the continental to regional scale than classical monitoring methods. The impact of diffuse contamination can be recognized at the low-concentration end while strong local contamination is shown as a distort at the high-concentration end of the distribution. Chromium, due to its structural similarities with essential nutrients, shows a clear biological signal in the CP-diagram. The bio-adjustment of Cr and Ni limits the accuracy of the diffuse contamination estimates. Combining CDF analysis with spatial mapping provides insight into the dominant contamination processes that distort the top soil CDF relative to the sub soil CDF. For both elements, a diffuse contamination signal of <1 mg/kg is obtained for soils at the European scale. Agricultural soil is affected by contamination from farming practices and shows higher excess Cr and Ni in top soil than forest soil. Although the world has faced several centuries of industrial development and Cr and Ni are used "everywhere", this is not reflected in surface soil at the continental to regional scale. The regional distribution of both elements is dominated by natural sources and processes.

Significant input of organophosphate esters through particle-mediated transport into the Pearl River Estuary, China

Most organophosphate esters (OPEs) enter the marine environment through atmospheric deposition and surface runoff, yet the role of particle-mediated transport in their inputs and loss processes remains poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, samples of size-segregated atmospheric particles, suspended particulate matter (SPM) in seawater, and sediments in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were collected and analyzed for OPEs. Total concentrations of atmospheric particulate OPEs showed a decreasing trend with increasing offshore distance in the PRE. The spatial and vertical distribution patterns of OPEs in SPM were diverse, which could be largely affected by physicochemical properties of SPM, marine microbial activities, hydrodynamic conditions, and environmental factors. Sediment in the region close to Modaomen outlet was subject to relatively high OPE concentrations. Approximately 24,100 and 65,100 g d^-1 of particulate OPEs were imported into the PRE through atmospheric deposition and surface runoff, respectively; 83,200 g d^-1 of which were exported to the open sea. The input and environmental fate of particulate OPEs were found to be dependent on sources, particulate media, and chemical species. The present study provides insights into the influence of OPEs in the PRE through particle-mediated transport and calls for more concern on anthropogenic impact on the estuary.

Contamination and sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes in the surface sediments of Chaobai River, China

In aquatic systems, sediment is both a sink for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and a potential source of POPs release. Consequently, it is important to understand the pollution characteristics and sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) as POPs of Stockholm Convention in sediment for control of the ecological risk. Atmospheric deposition is a potential source of PCNs in sediment. However, there is no clear report on the contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in sediments. In this study, the Chaobai River in China was selected because it is an important drinking water source that is not affected by wastewater discharge. Surface sediments from the river were analyzed for 75 PCN congeners by using high resolution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry. The total PCNs concentration ranged from 54 to 2266 (mean: 402) pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantity of 19 PCNs in surface sediments was 9.69 × 10^-2, and CN73, CN66/CN67, and CN63 had the largest contributions to this value. Dichlorinated and trichlorinated naphthalenes were the dominant homologs. The PCN data from the sediment samples in this study were combined with data for PCNs in ambient air from a literature, which has a good match with this study in both temporal and spatial scales. The contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in the surface sediment was evaluated by comparing congener characteristics and correlation analysis. Our study indicated atmospheric transportation and deposition are important pathways for transport of PCNs into surface sediments.

Dominant roles of torrential floods and atmospheric deposition revealed by quantitative source apportionment of potentially toxic elements in agricultural soils around a historical mercury mine, Southwest China

Hg pollution in soils surrounding the Wanshan mercury mine (WMM), once the largest Hg-producing center in China, has been confirmed, neglecting other potential toxic elements (PTEs). Better understanding of the sources and transport pathways of soil PTEs remains insufficient. To response these limitations, eight soil PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) at two typical agricultural sites, namely AZ and WW that are located near and far from the WMM, respectively, were systemically investigated. The results showed that AZ exhibited significantly higher concentrations of all the PTEs in the surface soil than WW (p < 0.01). Hg and Cd were recognized as the priority control PTEs, with their average concentrations of 21.54 and 1.21 mg kg^-1 at AZ, and 15.79 and 0.48 mg kg^-1 at WW. Those affected PTEs tended to enrich in near-river areas. Atmospheric deposition contributed more to soil Hg than did regular irrigation, but these two sources could not explain the considerable soil Hg accumulation. Three sources, including natural sources, hydraulic transport (torrential floods and regular irrigation) and atmospheric deposition, were identified and quantified based on the positive matrix factorization model, statistical methods and various auxiliary information. Hydraulic transport (mainly torrential floods) dominated the soil Hg input, which could explain 83.8% and 69.8% of the soil Hg input at AZ and WW, respectively. Atmospheric deposition dominated the soil Cd input, explaining 44.3% and 59.9% of the soil Cd input at AZ and WW, respectively. More attention should be given to the safe utilization of agricultural land and long-term monitoring of atmospheric deposition of Hg and Cd. This study could provide insights to prevent PTE diffusion along the above dominant transportation pathways while developing similar mine regions.

The interplay between atmospheric deposition and soil dynamics of mercury in Swiss and Chinese boreal forests: A comparison study

Taking advantage of the different histories of Hg deposition in Davos Seehornwald in E-Switzerland and Changbai Mountain in NE-China, the influence of atmospheric deposition on Hg soil dynamics in forest soil profiles was investigated. Today, Hg fluxes in bulk precipitation were similar, and soil profiles were generally sinks for atmospherically deposited Hg at both sites. Noticeably, a net release of 2.07 μg Hg m^-2 yr^-1 from the Bs horizon (Podzol) in Seehornwald was highlighted, where Hg concentration (up to 73.9 μg kg^-1) and soil storage (100 mg m^-3) peaked. Sequential extraction revealed that organic matter and crystalline Fe and Al hydr (oxide)-associated Hg decreased in the E horizon but increased in the Bs horizon as compared to the Ah horizon, demonstrating the coupling of Hg dynamics with the podzolisation process and accumulation of legacy Hg deposited last century in the Bs horizon. The mor humus in Seehornwald allowed Hg enrichment in the forest floor (182-269 μg kg^-1). In Changbai Mountain, the Hg concentrations in the Cambisol surface layer with mull humus were markedly lower (<148 μg kg^-1), but with much higher Hg soil storage (54-120 mg m^-3) than in the Seehornwald forest floor (18-27 mg m^-3). Thus, the vertical distribution pattern of Hg was influenced by humus form and soil type. The concentrations of Hg in soil porewater in Seehornwald (3.4-101 ng L^-1) and in runoff of Changbai Mountain (1.26-5.62 ng L^-1) were all low. Moreover, the pools of readily extractable Hg in the soils at both sites were all <2% of total Hg. Therefore, the potential of Hg release from the forest soil profile to the adjacent aquatic environment is currently low at both sites.
