Abstract
The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from Teucrium marum subsp. marum (Lamiaceae) was analysed by GC/MS and 30 components were identified. Isocaryophyllene (20.24%), beta-bisabolene (14.73%), beta-sesquiphellandrene (11.27%), alpha-santalene (10.97%), dolichodial (9.38%) and, alpha-caryophyllene (7.18%) were the main components. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was assayed against four phytopathogenic fungi and Rhyzoctonia solani resulted to be the most sensitive microorganism with a MIC value of 250 ppm. The antioxidant activity of the essential oil was evaluated using the DPPH test, 5-lipoxygenase test and luminol/xanthine/xanthine oxidase chemiluminescence assay.

Abstract
Screening of seven Yucatecan plant extracts to look for fungicidal activity for the control of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was carried out. Bioassay-directed purification of the root extract of one of the most active plants, Acacia pennatula, resulted in the isolation of the new compound 15,16-dihydroxypimar-8(14)-en-3-one (1), which in the in vitro bioassay "agar dilution" was shown to have growth, sporulation, and germination inhibition activity. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques were used to elucidate its structure.

Abstract
Chemical investigation of the diethyl ether extract of the stem bark of Khaya ivorensis A Chev (Meliaceae) afforded ten limonoids of angolensates, ring D-opened limonoids and mexicanolides. The structures of the limonoids isolated were determined by comparison of their (1)H and (13)C NMR data with those reported in the literature. These compounds were evaluated for their antifungal activity against the plant pathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea Pers. Methyl 6-hydroxyangolensate and 3,7-dideacetylkhivorin were also tested for their antifungal and antibacterial activities on several fungal and bacterial species. Methyl angolensate and 1,3,7-trideacetylkhivorin displayed the highest antifungal activity against B. cinerea, with respectively 62.8 and 64.0% mycelial growth inhibition at 1000 mg litre(-1), and 73.3 and 68.6% mycelial growth inhibition at 1500 mg litre(-1). 3,7-Dideacetylkhivorin showed stronger antifungal and antibacterial activities than methyl 6-hydroxyangolensate against all of the test fungi and bacteria except Penicillium expansum Link. This is the first report on the antifungal and antibacterial effects of these limonoids. Structure-antifungal activity relationships of the limonoids isolated are discussed.

Abstract
Pristimerin and celastrol isolated from the roots of Celastrus hypoleucus (Oliv) Warb f argutior Loes exhibited inhibitory effects against diverse phytopathogenic fungi. Pristimerin and celastrol were found to inhibit the mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn and Glomerella cingulata (Stonem) Spauld & Schrenk in vitro by 83.6 and 62.6%, respectively, at 10 microg ml(-1). Pristimerin showed good preventive effect (96.7% at 100 microg ml(-1)) and curative effect (66.5% at 100 microg ml(-1)) against wheat powdery mildew in vivo. For celastrol, the preventive and curative effects against wheat powdery mildew were 80.5 and 45.4%, respectively, at 100 microg ml(-1).

Abstract
This paper describes a sensitive method for the simultaneous quantification of eight commonly used grapevine fungicides in vineyard soils: cyprodinil, fludioxonil, metalaxyl, penconazole, pyrimethanil, procymidone, tebuconazole, and vinclozolin. The fungicides are extracted from the soil sample by sonication with water followed by shaking with ethyl acetate and are quantified by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. Average extraction efficiencies in a sample of seven spiked, previously fungicide-free soils were > or =79% for all of the analytes, method precisions were > or =17%, and quantification limits were < or =50 microg/kg. However, because recoveries varied considerably from soil to soil, there is a need to control for soil matrix differences (mainly soil pH and exchangeable calcium content); as a consequence, soil fungicide contents must be quantified by the standard additions method. When the method was applied in this way to soil samples from vineyards belonging to the specified wine-growing region of Rias Baixas (Galicia, northwestern Spain) taken at the beginning of October (1 month after the crop's final treatment), levels of fludioxonil as high as 991 microg/kg were found, but at the start of the season (9 months after the previous crop's final treatment) only fludioxonil was detected at levels higher than its limit of quantification (45 and 52 microg/kg).

Abstract
The crude methanolic extract of Zuccagnia punctata was active toward the fungal pathogens of soybean Phomopsis longicolla and Colletotrichum truncatum. Assay guided fractionation led to the isolation of two chalcones, one flavanone and a new caffeoyl ester derivative as the compounds responsible for the antifungal activity. Another new caffeoyl ester derivative was isolated from the antifungal chloroform extract but proved to be inactive against the soybean infecting fungi up to 50 microg/mL

Abstract
A spectrum of enniatins was isolated from Fusarium sp. strain F31 by bioassay-guided isolation directed against Botrytis cinerea. Two new enniatins, J(2) (7) and J(3) (8), were co-isolated and both contained, in addition to three hydroxyisovaleric acid units, N-methylated l-alanine, l-valine, and l-isoleucine units, differing only in their primary sequence. Two other enniatins, named enniatin J(1) (1) and enniatin K(1) (6), each containing two N-Me-l-Val units and one N-Me-l-Ala or alpha-N-Me-l-butyric acid unit, respectively, were isolated for the first time without directed biosynthesis. The enniatin structures were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods, and the absolute configuration of the amino acids (l) and hydroxyisovaleric acid (d) was consistent with all previously isolated enniatins. The known enniatins B (2), B(1) (4), B(2) (5), and B(4) (3) were also isolated. The minimum inhibitory concentration of pure enniatins against Botrytis cinerea was 75 microg/mL.

Abstract
A flavone (5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3',5'-dimethoxyflavone), a cyclohexenone (3-isopropyl-5-acetoxycyclohexene-2-one-1) and a liquid mixture of low polarity, containing long-chain and cyclic hydrocarbons, were isolated from leaves of allelopathic rice accession PI 312777 using column chromatography. Their structures and constituents were identified by means of HR-MS, NMR and GC/MS analyses, respectively. Bioassays showed that both the flavone and cyclohexenone significantly inhibited the growth of weeds Echinochloa crus-galli, Cyperus difformis and Cyperus iris, and the spore germination of fungal pathogens Pyricularia oryzae and Rhizoctonia solani at all tested concentrations. Moreover, the combination of the inactive mixture of low polarity and the active flavone or cyclohexenone significantly enhanced the inhibitory activities on weed growth. In addition, the two compounds and the mixture of low polarity from the leaves of PI312777 did not inhibit the rice growth at the same concentrations. It was also established that both compounds could be released into the soil, and was especially induced by E. crus-galli. The results suggest that 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3',5'-dimethoxyflavone and 3-isopropyl- 5-acetoxycyclohexene-2-one-1 may act as allelochemicals participating in the defense of rice against weeds and pathogens.

Abstract
The effect of a non-ionic surfactant on the phase distribution of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in a suspended-growth culture system was assessed. Tween 60, a polyoxyethylene sorbitan stearate ester surfactant, and an azide-inactivated, mixed, methanogenic, HCB-dechlorinating culture were used in this work. The sorption of HCB on the biomass as well as sorption and aggregation/precipitation of Tween 60 were experimentally quantified. The values of the HCB and Tween 60 distribution parameters were determined and the phase distribution of HCB in the presence of surfactant and biomass was described quantitatively. Both the HCB and surfactant distribution are highly dependent on the total amount of surfactant present in the system. At low initial surfactant concentrations, most of the HCB is associated with the biomass. As the surfactant concentration increases, the effect of surfactant sorption and precipitation diminishes and the higher pool of surfactant micelles shifts the distribution of HCB from the solid phase to the solution phase. The HCB phase distribution in the presence of the surfactant may have a significant effect on HCB bioavailability for reductive dechlorination. The quantitative description of the HCB phase distribution presented here was subsequently used as the basis for the development of a model that describes the bioavailability and reductive dechlorination of HCB in a surfactant/biomass system.

Abstract
An overview is given on pesticide-residue determination in environmental and food samples by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Pesticides comprise a large number of substances that belong to many completely different chemical groups, the only common characteristic is that they are effective against pests. They still constitute a challenge in MS because there is no collective pathway for fragmentation. A brief introduction to the theory of tandem MS permits a discussion of which parameters influence the ionization efficiency when the ions are subjected to different actions. Emphasis is placed on the different tandem MS instruments: triple and ion-trap quadrupoles, and hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF), including advantages and drawbacks, typical detection limits, and ion signals at low concentrations. The instrumental setup, as well as LC and mass spectrometric experimental conditions, must be carefully selected to increase the performance of the analytical system. The capacity of each instrument to provide useful data for the identification of pesticides, and the possibility to obtain structural information for the identification of target and non-target compounds, are discussed. Finally, sample preparation techniques and examples of applications are debated to reveal the potential of the current state-of-the-art technology, and to further promote the usefulness of tandem MS.

Abstract
Beta-dolabrin, gamma-thujaplicin, and 4-acetyltropolone, the components of Aomori Hiba (Thujopsis dolabrata SIEB. et ZUCC. var. hondai MAKINO), showed antifungal activity on seven kinds of plant-pathogenic fungi, antibacterial activity against two kinds of Legionella sp., and in vitro cytotoxic effect on murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia cell line. Firstly, beta-dolabrin, gamma-thujaplicin and 4-acetyltropolone had clear antifungal activity against seven kinds of plant-pathogenic fungi tested. In particular, beta-dolabrin and 4-acetyltropolone showed strong antifungal activity against Pythium aphanidermatum IFO 32440, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 6.0 microg/ml. Secondly, beta-dolabrin, gamma-thujaplicin and 4-acetyltropolone had obvious growth-inhibitory effect on two kinds of Legionella sp. 4-Acetyltropolone especially had strong antibacterial activity toward Legionella pneumophila SG 1, and its MIC value was 3.1 microg/ml. These three compounds showed cytotoxic effects against murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia cell line in vitro. The cytotoxic effect of three compounds in the murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia cell line were clear when cell growth was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. At 48 h after treatment, gamma-thujaplicin and 4-acetyltropolone at 0.63 microg/ml inhibited cell growth of murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia by 85% and 65%, respectively. At the same time after treatment, the growth of the murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia cell line was completely suppressed by the three compounds at concentrations higher than 5.0 microg/ml. Among these three compounds, gamma-thujaplicin had the strongest cytotoxic activity on the growth of this tumor cell line in vitro.

Abstract
A new antifungal 6-substituted 2H-pyran-2-one, named viridepyronone, has been isolated from a cultural filtrate of a strain of Trichoderma viride showing antagonistic activity in vitro toward Sclerotium rolfsii, which is the causal agent of crown and stem rot of artichoke. Viridepyronone was characterized as 6-(4-oxopentyl)-2H-pyran-2-one 2 with spectroscopic methods. Bioassays showed that viridepyronone had a good antifungal activity against S. rolfsii, and its minimum inhibitory concentration (over 90% inhibition) was found to be 196 microg/mL. This is the first report of viridepyronone produced by any species of fungi.

Abstract
The recent decades saw an increase in the number of systemic fungal diseases and improvements in the identification of their causative agents. There has been an intensive search for new drugs which would be more effective and less toxic than those already in use. From this aspect, attention has been paid also to garlic--its extracts and individual components, i.e., allicin, ajoen, polysulfides, essential oil. New experimental knowledge confirms a significant antifungal activity of sulfurous compounds of garlic. The paper also mentions a possible use of employing garlic extracts or essential oils in food industry as an alternative way of protection of foodstuffs from contamination with fungi.

Abstract
Bioassay-directed isolation of antifungal compounds from an ethyl acetate extract of Ruta graveolens leaves yielded two furanocoumarins, one quinoline alkaloid, and four quinolone alkaloids, including a novel compound, 1-methyl-2-[6'-(3' ',4' '-methylenedioxyphenyl)hexyl]-4-quinolone. The (1)H and (13)C NMR assignments of the new compound are reported. Antifungal activities of the isolated compounds, together with 7-hydroxycoumarin, 4-hydroxycoumarin, and 7-methoxycoumarin, which are known to occur in Rutaceae species, were evaluated by bioautography and microbioassay. Four of the alkaloids had moderate activity against Colletotrichum species, including a benomyl-resistant C. acutatum. These compounds and the furanocoumarins 5- and 8-methoxypsoralen had moderate activity against Fusarium oxysporum. The novel quinolone alkaloid was highly active against Botrytis cinerea. Phomopsis species were much more sensitive to most of the compounds, with P. viticola being highly sensitive to all of the compounds.

Abstract
The enantiomeric separation of triadimenol and triadimefon on a Chiralpak AD column using supercritical fluid chromatography, was studied in this work. The effect of different modifiers (methanol, ethanol and 2-propanol) was tested, with methanol and ethanol providing the best results for the enantiomeric separation of the two compounds. The enantioseparation of a mixture of triadimenol and triadimefon (six stereoisomers) was achieved in only 15 min using a gradient of ethanol, 200 bar, 35 degrees C and a flow-rate of 2 ml/min. The separation of triadimenol diastereoisomers on different achiral columns (diol, silica and ODS) was also investigated. In this case, the type of organic modifier to be used depended on the stationary phase, the Spherex Diol being the column that gave the best separation. Using this column, resolutions higher than 3 were obtained in analysis times of 5 min with any of the modifiers checked.

Abstract
Zopfiellin, a novel cyclooctanoid natural product isolated from Zopfiella curvata No. 37-3, was evaluated in a 96-well microtiter assay for fungicidal activity against Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, Colletotrichum fragariae, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Fusarium oxysporum. Zopfiellin exhibited pH-dependent activity, with the most mycelial growth inhibition demonstrated at pH 5.0. Mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies indicated that zopfiellin undergoes structural changes with changes in pH. At pH 5.0, zopfiellin showed the greatest activity against B. cinerea (IC(80) = 10 microM), C. gloeosporioides (IC(80) = 10 microM), and C. fragariae (IC(80) = 10 microM) and intermediate activity against C. acutatum (IC(80) = 30 microM), and was not active against F. oxysporum (IC(80) > 100 microM).

Abstract
Cyclodextrin-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography was applied to the enantioseparation of vinclozolin, which has been used as a fungicide and has an anti-androgenic activity, using gamma-cyclodextrin together with sodium dodecyl sulfate. Factors affecting the chiral resolution and migration time of vinclozolin were studied. The optimum running conditions were found to be 20 mM phosphate-5 mM borate buffer (pH 8.5) containing 50 mM gamma-cyclodextrin and 100 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate with an effective voltage of 20 kV at 20 degrees C using direct detection at 203 nm. Under these conditions, the resolution (Rs) of racemic vinclozolin was approximately 2.1. The sample was concentrated by solid-phase extraction and was fractionated by HPLC. The peak area ratio of (+)- and (-)-vinclozolins in wine was found to be 2:3, namely, not racemic, suggesting that degradation rates were different between (+)- and (-)-vinclozolins. The anti-androgenic activities of (+)- and (-)-vinclozolins on dihydrotestosterone-induced transcription were also investigated. The anti-androgenic activity of (+)-vinclozolin tended to be stronger than that of (-)-vinclozolin, suggesting the possibility that vinclozolin can act as an enantioselective anti-androgen.

Abstract
Bioassay-guided fractionation of the dichloromethane extracts of the roots and the bark of Zanthoxylum usambarense led to the isolation of two physiologically active compounds, i.e. canthin-6-one 1 (fungicide) and pellitorine 4 (insecticide). Together with oxychelerythrine 2, norchelerythrine 3, (+)-sesamin 5 and (+)-piperitol-3,3-dimethylallyl ether 6, they were isolated for the first time from this plant.

Abstract
Laboratory studies were conducted in a model system to determine the effects of ozone (1 and 3 ppm) and hydrogen peroxyacetic acid (HPA) (5 and 50 ppm) at pH 4.6, 7.0, and 10.7 and at 10 and 21 degrees C on the degradation of mancozeb in solution over a 30 min period. All samples were analyzed for residues by GLC and HPLC. Ozonation and HPA treatment were effective in degrading mancozeb in solution. Rate of mancozeb degradation was dependent on pH, with the fastest rate at pH 7.0. Ethylenethiourea (ETU) residue concentrations in the mancozeb solutions were monitored over 60 min. Under controlled conditions, the ETU residue concentrations increased during the 15 min reaction time and then decreased for all three pH values. At 3 ppm of ozone treatment, no ETU residues were detected at all three pH ranges after 15 min of reaction time. Degradation of ETU by HPA was greatest at pH 4.6, and no ETU residues remained after 5 min at either 5 or 50 ppm. The results showed that ozone and HPA gave excellent degradation of pesticide residues depending on pH and temperature. These experiments indicated the potential for the removal of pesticide residues on fruit and in processed products.

Abstract
Phomalactone, 5,6-dihydro-5-hydroxy-6-prop-2-enyl-2H-pyran-2-one, produced by the fungus Nigrospora sphaerica, was tested in vitro against nine plant pathogenic fungi, and specifically inhibited the mycelial growth of Phytophthora infestans, with an MIC value of 2.5 mg litre-1. Its inhibitory activities against sporangium and zoospore germination of P infestans were similar to those against Phytophthora capsici. In vivo, at 100 and 500 mg litre-1, it reduced the development of tomato late blight caused by P infestans.

Abstract
In this paper, sulfated beta-cyclodextrin-mediated capillary electrophoresis (CE) is evaluated as a new approach for the chiral separation of triazole-type fungicides. The 14 fungicides investigated were bitertanol, cyproconazole, difenoconazole, diniconazole, flutriafol, hexaconazole, myclobutanil, paclobutrazol, penconazole, propiconazole, tebuconazole, tetraconazole, triadimefon and triadimenol. Under the optimal conditions, excellent enantioseparation was achieved for all the 14 fungicides, including those fungicides containing two chiral centers. To our knowledge, this is the only system to date that offers outstanding enantiodiscrimination towards all triazole-type fungicides. The impact of the molecular structures of the triazole compounds on their migration behavior was studied. Similar to other chemical systems involving host-guest complexation, the interaction between sulfated beta-cyclodextrin and the triazole compounds was found to be affected by a variety of factors, including electrostatic force, hydrogen bonding, steric effect and hydrophobicity. These factors, coupled with the countercurrent electroosmotic flow (EOF), were believed to be the major forces behind the exceptional chiral selectivity.

Abstract
A technology was designed for manufacturing a preparation based on Trichoderma viride Pers ex S.F. Gray that strongly suppresses the development of causative agents of certain plant diseases and displays a growth-stimulating activity. Cultivation of the strain in a liquid medium for 18-24 h produced up to 60 g dry biomass per liter nutrient medium. A marketable form created in this work conserves the activity of the mycelial preparation for six months. The preparation is compatible with insecticides (carbofos, vismetrin, talstar, and applaud) and certain fungicides (such as baitan). Tests performed with the liquid form of Mycofungicid (seeds were treated with this preparation at a dose of 20-30 g per metric ton before sowing) showed its high efficiency in protecting cereal crops from plant pathogens. The incidence of plant diseases decreased by 65%, and crop yields increased by 15-20%.

Abstract
Biological denitrification and trace pesticide removal in a combined biofilm-electrode reactor/adsorption process has been investigated. In long-term (more than 260 days) continuous experiments, influent and effluent concentrations of nitrate, nitrite, isoprothiolane and gas composition were measured at different electric current and pesticide loading conditions. Experimental results showed that complete and stable denitrification was achieved in BER without accumulation of nitrite and nitrous oxide. Isoprothiolane (IPT) was removed by adsorption onto either granular activated carbon or silicone resin. Removal efficiency of IPT exceeding 97% was achieved and effluent concentration was below the guideline value (40 micrograms/l). Theoretically predicted effluent concentrations were in good agreement with the observed results. From these results, it is concluded that the combined process is applicable to treat nitrate and pesticide contaminated drinking water. Moreover, from comparison with former studies, different possible options to further enhance the decomposition of pesticide were suggested.

Abstract
Three eremophilanolides, 1alpha-acetoxy-8beta-methoxy-10betaH-eremophil-7(11)-en-8alpha,12-olide (1); 1alpha-angeloyloxy-6beta-hydroxy-8beta-methoxy-10betaH-eremophil-7(11)-en-8alpha,12-olide (2); and 1alpha-angeloyloxy-8betaH,10betaH-eremophil-7(11)-en-8alpha,12-olide (3), and two pyrrolizidine alkaloids, integerrimine (4) and its N-oxide (5), were isolated from bioactive fractions of Senecio miser. The structures of the new compounds 1 and 2 were established by NMR spectroscopic analysis and chemical transformation. The X-ray analysis of compound 1 was also performed. Eremophilanolides 1 and 2 and alkaloids 4 and 5 were found to be strong insect antifeedants, further supporting a proposed defensive role for these classes of compounds.

Abstract
The enantiomeric resolution of the fungicides uniconazole and diniconazole was performed using electrokinetic chromatography with cyclodextrins as pseudostationary phase (CD-EKC). A systematic evaluation of several chiral selectors was made. The anionic derivative carboxymethylated-gamma-cyclodextrin (CM-gamma-CD) was found to be the most appropriate for the enantioseparation of fungicides among all cyclodextrins tested. The influence of some experimental conditions such as nature and buffer pH, chiral selector concentration, and temperature on the enantiomeric separation of the compounds studied was also investigated. The use of a 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6.5) containing 5 mM CM-gamma-CD and a temperature of 50 degrees C enabled the baseline enantioresolution of mixtures of uniconazole and diniconazole in less than 5 min. In addition, apparent binding constants for each enantiomer-CM-gamma-CD pair at several temperatures, as well as thermodynamic parameters for binding were calculated.

Abstract
Enantiomeric separation of two triazole fungicides, triadimefon and triadimenol, was investigated in sulfated beta-cyclodextrin (sulfated beta-CD)-mediated capillary electrophoresis (CE) systems. It was found that, at pH 2-4, sulfated beta-CD exhibited strong chiral recognition towards both triadimefon and triadimenol. The enantiorecognition was believed to result from the multiple interactions between sulfated beta-CD and the analytes, which included inclusion effect, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding. Under optimal conditions (phosphate buffer with 2% sulfated beta-CD, pH 2.5), simultaneous resolution of all chiral isomers of triadimefon and triadimenol was achieved in less than half an hour. In conjunction with solvent extraction and subsequent enrichment by solid-phase extraction (SPE), this new enantioseparation method was applied successfully in the study of stereoselectivity associated with the biotransformation of triadimefon to triadimenol by soil microorganisms. The present methodology was superior to the commonly adopted chiral gas chromatography (GC) approach in that a very mild procedure was involved from sample extraction to the ultimate chiral separation. Thus, the disturbance of the enantiomeric distribution patterns of the original soil samples by heat stress was an unlikely scenario. Furthermore, it was discovered that, owing to the unique selectivity of the present separation strategy, there was virtually no interference from the soil matrix, which led to improvements in both sensitivity and selectivity in real sample determination.

Abstract
In addition to the known cordiaquinones A and B, two novel meroterpenoid naphthoquinones, named cordiaquinones J and K, have been isolated from the roots of Cordia curassavica. Their structures were elucidated by spectrometric methods including EI, D/CI mass spectrometry, 1H, 13C and 2D-NMR experiments. The four naphthoquinones demonstrated antifungal activities against Cladosporium cucumerinum, Candida albicans and toxic properties against larvae of the yellow fever-transmitting mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Abstract
Organic extracts from mycelium and culture broth of 21 Penicillium isolates have been tested for insecticidal, insect anti-juvenile hormone (anti-JH), and antifungal activities. Culture broth extracts were the most active, mainly against insects; nearly 25% of them have shown high entomotoxicity (100% mortality at 100 microg/cm(2)). A strong in vivo anti-JH activity against Oncopeltus fasciatus Dallas was detected in the culture broth extracts from P. brevicompactum P79 and P88 isolates. The two new natural products isolated from P79, N-(2-methyl-3-oxodec-8-enoyl)-2-pyrroline (1) and 2-hept-5-enyl-3-methyl-4-oxo-6,7,8,8a-tetrahydro-4H-pyrrolo[2,1-b]-1, 3-oxazine (2), possessed anti-JH and insecticidal activity, respectively, against O. fasciatus. Synthesized natural compound 1 has shown an ED(50) of 0.7 microg/nymph when assayed on newly molted fourth-instar nymphs of O. fasciatus. Promising biological activities have also been detected in the synthetic precursors.

Abstract
Solid-phase extraction with a novel porous carbon sorbent CARB GR was used for the clean-up step of dicarboxyimide fungicides residues from variety of Slovak grape wines with subsequent capillary gas chromatography-flame ionization detection, -electron-capture detection (ECD) and -mass spectrometry-ion-trap detection (MS-ITD) analysis. Recovery was tested at various concentration levels of vinclozolin and iprodione in standard solutions (R = 80-97%, R.S.D. < or = 5). The value of recovery in spiked wines is dependent on concentration level (studied in the range of 5.9 micrograms/1-1.96 mg/l) and on the variety of wine (R = 80-96%; R.S.D. = 3-5%). Limits of quantitation (for sample volume 50 ml) were determined to be with GC-ECD for both fungicides in ppt range and with GC-MS-ITD in the multiple ion detection mode monitoring in ptt range for vinclozolin and ppb range for iprodione. Concentration levels of vinclozolin residues were determined in treated wines (with 0.1% Ronilan 50 WP) as well as iprodione residues (with 0.15% Rovral 50 WP) and a strong dependence on the protective term before the harvest is shown.

Abstract
In the structure of sakuranetin, which was isolated as a phytoalexin from the rice plant, the methoxy group at C-7 has been shown to be important for its high activity. Apigeninidin was isolated as a phytoalexin from sorghum, but it had no methoxy group at C-7. We prepared 7-methoxyapigeninidin and compared its fungicidal activity with that of apigeninidin. The 7-methoxyapigeninidin showed higher activity against sorghum fungi than apigeninidin, suggesting that the methoxy group at C-7 was important for the high fungicidal activity.

Abstract
The direct chiral separation of the four enantiomers of the systemic fungicide triadimenol has been investigated using micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) with cyclodextrin (CD) chiral selectors and organic modifiers. The capillary operating temperature, applied voltage, and column diameter were all shown to be important factors in achieving an enantioselective separation. The addition of various CDs to the micellar buffer mixture was evaluated. The type of CD and its concentration affected the degree of separation, with the best separation of the enantiomers demonstrated for heptakis 2,6-di-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (di-OMe-beta-CD). The addition of organic modifiers and CDs to the background electrolyte further enhanced separation. The best separation of the four enantiomers was obtained using an MECC buffer system consisting of 20% methanol, 0.02 M hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HO-Pr-beta-CD), and 0.05 M sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in 0.02 M sodium borate and 0.02 M disodium hydrogen phosphate. The reported method demonstrates how the separation of enantiomers can be achieved by systematically varying the parameters in an MECC buffer system.

Its physico-chemical and biological properties as well as the amino acid composition were investigated. Alirin B1 was shown to differ from the polypeptide substances described in the literature. The antibiotic was classified as belonging to the bacteriocins.

Abstract
Enantiomeric separation of the structural analogs, diniconazole and uniconazole, can be achieved by cyclodextrin (CD)-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). The elution behavior of other structurally related compounds was therefore investigated and compared with that in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a CD-bonded stationary phase. From the results, it was concluded that the benzene ring of the solute plays an important role in formation of CD complexes and chiral recognition in MEKC as well as in HPLC, although the enantioselectivity with the two methods was different. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data revealed different CD effects on the solute between the MEKC and HPLC models.

Abstract
During screening of essential oils for their antifungal activities against Aspergillus flavus, the essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus was found to exhibit fungitoxicity. The MIC of the oil was found to be 1,000 ppm, at which it showed its fungistatic nature, wide fungitoxic spectrum, nonphytotoxic nature, and superiority over synthetic fungicides, i.e., Agrosan G. N., Thiride, Ceresan, Dithane M-45, Agrozim, Bavistin, Emison, Thiovit, wettable sulfur, and copper oxychloride. The fungitoxic potency of the oil remained unaltered for 7 months of storage and upon introduction of high doses of inoculum of the test fungus. It was thermostable in nature with treatment at 5 to 100 degrees C. These findings thus indicate the possibility of exploitation of the essential oil of C. citratus as an effective inhibitor of storage fungi.

Abstract
A gas chromatographic method is described that is suitable for the determination of benalaxyl residues ranging from 10 to 0.1 micrograms/kg in several crops, must, wine, and water. The compound is extracted with acetone and purified either by partitioning between water and n-hexane or by passing the extract through an Extrelut column with n-hexane. Further purification is achieved by column chromatography on alumina. The active ingredient is finally determined by gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection. Mean recoveries were > or = 95% in the various crops tested and in the 0.01-1.05 mg/kg fortification range. Standard deviations for each crop were < or = 6.5%.

Abstract
Leaf thionins of barley have been identified as a novel class of cell wall proteins, toxic to plant pathogenic fungi, and possibly involved in the defense mechanism of plants (Bohlmann, H., Clausen, S., Behnke, S., Giese, H., Hiller, C., Reimann-Philipp, U., Schrader, G., Barkholt, V., and Apel, K., (1988) EMBO J. 7, 1559-1565). In the present work a second subfraction of thionins has been detected within the leaf cell, mainly in the vacuole. Thionins of both groups are closely related to each other. They are toxic to phytopathogenic fungi as well as to plant protoplasts, they share similar amino acid sequences, and their synthesis in etiolated seedlings of barley is down-regulated by light. Despite these similarities each of the two subfractions of thionins could be clearly distinguished by its subcellular distribution. In ultrathin sections of embedded etiolated leaf material, cell wall thionins could be immunogold labeled specifically by an antiserum raised against a fusion protein of Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase and the 15,000 Mr precursor polypeptide of thionins. This antiserum did not react with intracellular thionins. Inversely, intracellular thionins were recognized specifically by an anti-serum raised against soluble leaf thionins. The possible function of intracellular thionins as part of a defense mechanism has been discussed.

Abstract
Uninoculated roots of pea (Pisum sativum) and French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) have been shown to exude a number of antifungal compounds when grown in a non-sterile aqueous aerated medium. These have been identified and their possible importance in relation to disease resistance is discussed.
