Abstract
Free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba are the causative agents of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. Acanthamoebae occur ubiquitously in the environment and are thus a constant cause of antigenic stimulation. In a previous study we have shown that compared to control sera, AK patients exhibit markedly lower immunoreactivities to whole cell antigen of Acanthamoeba spp. As the pathogenicity of acanthamoebae primarily relies on the excretion of proteins, it was the aim of the present study to investigate the immunoreactivity of metabolic antigen from different Acanthamoeba strains of varying pathogenicity. Three Acanthamoeba strains, one highly pathogenic, one non-pathogenic but thermophilic and one non-thermophilic non-pathogenic, were used for antigen extraction. The antigen was harvested before and after contact with human cells and all strains were tested with AK sera and with sera from healthy individuals. It was shown that the somatic protein profiles of the Acanthamoeba strains correlated to the morphological groups, and that within morphological group II-the group associated with AK-the profiles of the metabolic antigens correlated to strain pathogenicity. Moreover, it was shown that the control sera showed markedly higher immunoreactivities than the sera of the AK patients and that this immunoreactivity was generally higher to the non-pathogenic strains than to the pathogenic strain. Altogether our results once again raise the question of whether there is an immunological predisposition in AK. To our knowledge this is the first study on the immunoreactivity of metabolic antigen of acanthamoebae.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanism in tumor invasion and metastasis. The expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2, -9 (MMP-2, MMP-9), tissue inhibitor-1 of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP-1), cell adhesion molecule 44 variant 6 (CD44v6), HER2/neu and p53 was investigated in 154 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by ABC and ImmunoMax immunohistochemical method. Their clinical relevance and correlation were analysed. The expression of MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, CD44v6, HER2/neu and p53 was found in cancer cells in 87.01%, 85.71%, 68.18%, 98.05%, 55.19% and 50.65% cases respectively. Linear regression and correlation analysis revealed that there was close positive relationship (P<0.05) between the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, TIMP-1 and CD44v6, HER2/neu and MMP-9, MMP-2 and p53. Up-regulation of MMP-2 was accompanied by advanced T stage (P<0.01). There was also a trend of MMP-2 expression being related with tumor metastasis. Increased expression of HER2/neu was found in patients with tumor recurrence(P<0.05). The expression of TIMP-1 was higher in laryngeal cancer than that in pharyngeal cancer, and higher in keratinizing and non-keratinizing SCC than that in basaloid SCC(P<0.05). These findings suggested that MMP-2 and MMP-9, HER2/neu and MMP-9, MMP-2 and p53 had a coordinate function in aggression of tumor; that MMP-2 had a more important function than MMP-9 in tumor invasion and metastasis; and that HER2/neu might serve as a biomarker for poor prognosis in HNSCC.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis (PG) is a micro-organism that is suggested to play an etiologic role in acute and chronic periodontitis. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the question whether PG is capable of inducing interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-2, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) production in macrophages. Furthermore, the effect of PG on the activation of macrophages by Escherichia coli-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was studied. The cytokines were analyzed by detection of specific mRNA. The mRNA was amplified by RT-PCR and semi-quantitatively analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography and densitometrically, respectively. These studies demonstrate that LPS was more active than PG in inducing mRNA expression of IL-1beta, IL-6, MIP-2 and GM-CSF. Moreover, PG reduced the mRNA expression of the macrophages stimulated with LPS, especially the IL-1beta and IL-6 mRNA expression was decreased.

Abstract
Deterioration of the gain coefficient as a result of UV processing of hydrogen-loaded Er(3+) - and Er(3+)/Yb (3+) -doped silicate optical waveguides can be reduced by initial hypersensitization of the waveguide prior to bulk irradiation. This allows improved performance in active-grating devices such as distributed-feedback fiber amplifiers and lasers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In spacious or multilayered tissue losses and cases of multiple locations of defects, a large amount of tissue with different components such as skin, fatty tissue, and muscle is required for proper reconstruction. A donor area which can meet these demands is the shoulder-back region with the subscapular vessel, which arises from the axillary artery. PATIENTS AND METHODS We report our clinical experience with 12 patients in whom we reconstructed defects with transplants from this region. RESULTS Our anatomic investigation and measurements provided proof of a constant anatomy of the vessels with a length of the vascular pedicle and a vascular diameter suitable for microvascular anastomosis. Based on our clinical experience, the scapular, parascapular, and latissmus dorsi muscle transplants are very suitable for the reconstruction of very large superficial defects or for the augmentation of multilayered defects of the upper aerodigestive tract. CONCLUSIONS A main advantage of the transplants from the shoulder and back region is the possibility of combining several transplants with a wide variety of tissue combinations with one vascular pedicle for a single-step reconstruction of multiple defects of the oral cavity and the pharynx.
