Abstract
Structural growth, feed consumption, rumen development, metabolic response, and immune response were studied in Holstein calves fed milk through either a conventional method or a step-down (STEP) method. In the conventional method, calves (n = 20) were fed colostrum and then milk at a rate of 10% of their BW for the entire period of 44 d. In the STEP method, calves (n = 20) were given colostrum and then milk at a rate of 20% of their BW for 23 d, which was reduced (between d 24 to 28) to 10% of their BW for the remaining 16 d. The calves on both methods were weaned gradually by diluting milk with water between d 45 and 49. After weaning, feed consumption, structural growth, and body weight gain were monitored until calves were 63 d of age. At d 63, twelve calves (6/treatment) were euthanized and rumen papillae length, papillae width, rumen wall thickness, and emptied forestomach weight were recorded. At wk 4, 7, and 9, ruminal contents were collected to enumerate rumen metabolites. The STEP-fed calves consumed a greater amount of milk than conventionally fed calves during the pre-STEP (d 1 to 28), post-STEP (d 29 to 49), and preweaning (d 1 to 49) periods. Consumption of starter and hay was greater during the pre-STEP period and lesser during the post-STEP and postweaning (d 50 to 63) periods in calves on the conventional method than on the STEP method. Body weight gain and structural growth measurements of calves were greater on the STEP method than on the conventional method. A hypophagic condition caused by greater milk consumption depressed solid feed intake of STEP-fed calves during the pre-STEP period, and a hyperphagic response caused by a reduced nutrient supply from milk triggered their consumption of solid feed during the post-STEP and postweaning periods. Ruminal pH and concentrations of ammonia, total volatile fatty acids, acetate, propionate, butyrate, and plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate were higher in calves on the STEP method and at weaning and postweaning (d 63) were lower in calves on the conventional method. Emptied weight of the forestomach, rumen wall thickness, papillae length, papillae width, and papillae concentration were higher in calves on the STEP method than in those on the conventional method. Blood glucose was lower, and blood urea nitrogen and beta-hydroxybutyrate at weaning and postweaning were higher in STEP-fed calves. Serum IgG, IgA, and triglycerides for 1, 2, and 3 wk of age were higher in calves on the STEP method than in those on the conventional method. In conclusion, greater feed consumption, BW gain, and structural growth, and a more metabolically and physically developed rumen were observed in calves on the STEP method than in those on the conventional method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To report the histopathological findings after photodynamic therapy (PDT) in eyes obtained postmortem with choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS Two eyes were obtained postmortem from two patients with CNV secondary to AMD. Both of the patients had been treated with PDT. Serial sections through the posterior poles were obtained and stained with haematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid-Schiff, Masson trichrome or phosphotungstic acid haematoxylin (PTAH). Two-dimensional reconstructions were prepared and compared with fluorescein angiograms. RESULTS The interval between PDT and death was 3 months and 17 months in each patient, respectively. Light-microscopic examination showed that CNV enveloped with retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in both eyes. The average size of the CNV was 550 x 280 microm. One eye had combined (subRPE/subretinal) growth pattern CNV, and the other eye had both type I (subRPE) and combined growth pattern CNV. All specimens contained fibrous proliferation and patent vascular channels within the CNV, and there was no thrombus formation within the vascular channels. No apparent abnormalities in the choroid were observed by light microscopy. CONCLUSIONS Although involution with fibrous tissue proliferation occurred, PDT did not result in permanent occlusion of the vascular channels in the CNV. Our findings indicate that PDT may accelerate involution of CNV, thus limiting its size and preserving photoreceptors.

Abstract
Gate-modulated transport through partially aligned films of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in thin film type transistor structures are studied experimentally and theoretically. Measurements are reported on SWNTs grown by chemical vapor deposition with systematically varying degrees of alignment and coverage in transistors with a range of channel lengths and orientations perpendicular and parallel to the direction of alignment. A first principles stick-percolation-based transport model provides a simple, yet quantitative framework to interpret the sometimes counterintuitive transport parameters measured in these devices. The results highlight, for example, the dramatic influence of small degrees of SWNT misalignment on transistor performance and imply that coverage and alignment are correlated phenomena and therefore should be simultaneously optimized. The transport characteristics reflect heterogeneity in the underlying anisotropic metal-semiconductor stick-percolating network and cannot be reproduced by classical transport models.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence that the aerobic fitness performance of children is declining, at least in developed countries. To see if there was evidence of similar trends in a non-Western country, this study analysed data on 6-18-year-old Koreans tested between 1968 and 2000 using distance runs ranging from 600 to 1200 m. All existing data on the results of children's aerobic fitness tests in Korea were collated. In addition to six individual studies, very large datasets were available from the Korean Ministries of Education, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Data on a total of 22,127,265 6-18-year-old children were available in the form of group means and standard deviations. Data were collated for each age x sex x test group, and performances were expressed as percentages of the fitted values for the year 1992 to standardise across tests, ages and sexes. All age x sex x test groups were then combined, and curves were fitted using weighted regression. A two-linear segment model best described the pattern of change (r = 0.83, p < 0.001). There was a relatively slow decline (0.26 % per year) in the aerobic performance of Korean children between 1968 and 1984. After 1984, however, there was a steep decline in performance, averaging 0.80 % per year. The rate of decline was greater in boys, younger children and children from outside the capital Seoul. Changes in running performance showed a similar pattern to changes in estimated body mass index. Compared to other countries, there has been a sharp decline in Korean children's performance on tests of aerobic fitness, which has been concurrent with increases in estimated body mass index.

Abstract
Soft x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies have been employed to investigate the electronic structure and chemical bonding of two prototypical molecules, N,N(')-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N(')-diphenyl-1,1(')-biphenyl-4,4(')-diamine (NPB) and bathocuproine (BCP), which are frequently chosen because of their hole-transporting and hole-blocking properties, respectively. The resulting resonant C Kalpha x-ray emission spectra of these materials reveal different spectral features depending on the resonant excitation energy. According to the N absorption and emission spectra, the contribution of N atoms to the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals is different for in NPB and in BCP. Detailed knowledge of these materials will allow tailoring charge transport properties of organic devices in order to develop high performance organic light-emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells.

Abstract
AIMS A decreased expression of beta-catenin has been known to be associated with tumour metastasis. The prognostic value of beta-catenin expression in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with liver metastasis was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy patients who underwent curative resection for CRC with liver metastasis were included. Tissue samples from normal colon mucosa, primary CRC and metastatic liver lesions were prepared in tissue microarrays, and were stained by immunohistochemistry with beta-catenin antibody. The beta-catenin expression of primary CRC tissues and metastatic liver tissues was analysed. RESULTS A high expression of beta-catenin (score > 6) was observed in 42.0% and 21.9% of primary colorectal tissues and metastatic liver tissues, respectively. The beta-catenin expression in metastatic liver tissues was significantly lower than in primary CRC tissues (P = 0.022). The patients were classified into two groups according to the difference in the beta-catenin expression score between the primary CRC and the liver metastasis. Group A was defined as patients showing a remarkably decreased expression of beta-catenin in their metastatic liver tissue and group B was defined as patients showing a maintained or increased beta-catenin expression in their metastatic liver tissue in comparison with their primary CRC. The overall survival and disease-free survival rates were better in group B than in group A, and this was statistically significant (P = 0.02, P = 0.002). CONCLUSION The decreased expression of beta-catenin in a metastatic liver lesion may be a poor prognostic marker in CRC with liver metastasis and further investigation is necessary.

Abstract
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) often coexists with motor neuron disease (MND). To characterize glucose hypometabolism in patients with FTD with MND (FTD/MND), the authors compared the glucose metabolism of 8 patients with FTD/MND with that of 29 patients with FTD. All of the patients with FTD/MND showed glucose hypometabolism only in the frontal area, whereas most patients with FTD had hypometabolism in the frontal and temporal areas. FTD/MND also showed a more symmetric pattern of glucose hypometabolism than FTD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The clinical presentation of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is often asymmetrical in terms of both its clinical features and atrophy on MRI. Asymmetry in the lateral ventricle size on structural neuroimaging in FTD patients may have clinical significance. However, this has not been systematically investigated yet. This study compares the ventricular asymmetry seen on MRI with that of the asymmetric glucose metabolism using FDG-PET in patients with FTD. METHODS Nineteen FTD patients who underwent both brain MRI and FDG-PET were retrospectively selected. As control groups, 23 and 11 age and sex-matched healthy normal subjects underwent either brain MRI or FDG-PET, respectively. The ventricular asymmetry index (VAI) was obtained in two ways: by visual rating (VAI-V) and by measuring the lateral ventricular volumes (VAI-ROI). The hemispheric asymmetry of the glucose metabolism on FDG-PET (MAI) was assessed in three ways: 1) by visual rating (MAI-V), 2) by counting the FDG activity of each hemisphere on normalized and smoothed PET images (MAI-ROI) and 3) by counting the number of voxels with significant hypometabolism based on statistical parametric mapping results (MAI-SPM). RESULTS The VAIs on MRI (VAI-V and VAI-ROI) were highly correlated, as were the MAIs (MAI-V, MAI-ROI, and MAI-SPM) on FDG-PET. More importantly, the VAIs on MRI and the MAIs on FDG-PET showed high correlation. CONCLUSIONS Ventricular asymmetry in FTD patients was common (78.9%) and there was a high correlation between the ventricular structural asymmetry and the hemispheric metabolic asymmetry. Therefore, it would be reasonable to interpret that the hemisphere with larger ventricle on MRI in FTD patients is undergoing a more active degenerative process.

Abstract
The aims of this cross-sectional study were (i) to compare the overall glucose metabolism between early onset and late onset Alzheimer's disease in a large sample of patients; and (ii) to investigate the pattern of glucose metabolism as a function of dementia severity in early onset versus late onset Alzheimer's disease, using a statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis. Subjects consisted of four groups: 74 patients with early onset Alzheimer's disease, 46 patients with late onset of the disease, and two control groups age matched to each patient group. All the subjects underwent 2-[(18)F]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG)-PET under the same scanning conditions. Severity of dementia was rated with the Clincial Dementia Rating (CDR). Voxel-based SPM99 was used for statistical analyses. Overall glucose hypometabolism of early onset Alzheimer's disease patients was much greater in magnitude and extent than that of late onset patients, though both groups were similar in dementia severity: the early onset group showed more severe hypometabolism in parietal, frontal and subcortical (basal ganglia and thalamus) areas. When the decline of glucose metabolism was compared as a function of CDR stage, the slope was steeper in early onset than in late onset Alzheimer's disease. The rapid decline occurred at CDR 0.5-1 in the early onset group, whereas similar changes occurred at CDR 2-3 in the late onset group. The greater hypometabolism in early onset than in late onset patients is required to reach the same severity of dementia, probably reflecting greater functional reserve in younger than in older subjects. Alternatively, the metabolic decline curve suggests that the early onset patients may take a more rapid course in the reduction of glucose metabolism than the late onset patients.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated glomerulonephritis (HBV-GN) is occurring at high prevalence in most Asian endemic areas. There have been some reports on human leucocyte antigen (HLA) associations with HBV infections; however, HLA association with HBV-GN has been rarely reported. Forty-six adult Korean patients with HBV-GN (42 male and four female patients, age 20-66), 100 HBsAg (-) healthy controls, and 89 individuals with chronic HBV infection were studied for HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 gene polymorphisms using high-resolution DNA typing methods. In HBV-GN patients, a strong association with HLA-DR2 was observed compared with HBsAg (-) controls (OR = 4.0). Different HLA-DR2 alleles were associated with different pathologic subtypes of HBV-GN: DRB1*1502 with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN, n = 35) (OR = 14.5) and DRB1*1501 with membranous nephropathy (MN, n = 11) (OR = 3.8). HLA-DQB1*0601, strongly linked to DRB1*1502, was also associated with MPGN subtype of HBV-GN (OR = 4.3). All these associations were also significant compared with chronic HBV infection group. For chronic HBV infection per se, DRB1*1302, DQB1*0402, and DQB1*0604 had some protective effect (OR = 0.4, OR = 0.3, and OR = 0.1, respectively), and DRB1*1101 was weakly associated (OR = 4.6) in Koreans. These results suggest that HLA-DR or related genetic factor is associated with disease susceptibility to HBV-GN in Koreans, and different pathologic subtypes of HBV-GN are influenced by the genetic factors of the patients.

Abstract
Little is known of the association of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7/NM (EHEC O157) with disease in naturally infected calves, although cattle have been known as a major source for EHEC O157 outbreaks in humans. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of EHEC O157 in calves associated with/without diarrhoea to examine if EHEC O157 is involved in calf diarrhoea and to characterize the isolates. Four hundred and ninety eight diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic young calves from 115 different farms were examined. Of 244 diarrhoeic calves, 24 (9.8%) were positive for EHEC O157, and of 254 non-diarrhoeic calves, 7 (2.8%) were positive. EHEC O157 was recovered from 12/76 (15.79%) of diarrhoeic calves less than 2-week-old, and no EHEC O157 was detected in this age group of non-diarrhoeic calves. This implicates EHEC O157 as a possible cause of the disease in naturally infected neonatal calves. The occurrence of EHEC O157 was relatively lower in the older calves (aged older than 8 weeks) and no significant difference was found in the occurrence rates between these diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic calves. PCR analysis of virulence markers revealed that the isolates carried various virulence genes such as Ehly, eae, stx1 and stx2, which underlines the potential importance of these attributes for the infection, colonization and possible pathogenesis of calf diarrhoea.

Abstract
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) may be genotyped for use in case-control designs to test for association between a SNP marker and a disease using a 2 x 3 chi-squared test of independence. Genotyping is often based on underlying continuous measurements, which are classified into genotypes. A "no-call" procedure is sometimes used in which borderline observations are not classified. This procedure has the simultaneous effect of reducing the genotype error rate and the expected number of genotypes observed. Both quantities affect the power of the statistic. We develop methods for calculating the genotype error rate, the expected number of genotypes observed, and the expected power of the resulting test as a function of the no-call procedure. We examine the statistical properties of the chi-squared test using a no-call procedure when the underlying continuous measure of genotype classification is a three-component mixture of univariate normal distributions under a range of parameter specifications. The genotype error rate decreases as the no-call region is increased. The expected number of observations genotyped also decreases. Our key finding is that the expected power of the chi-squared test is not sensitive to the no-call procedure. That is, the benefits of reduced genotype error rate are almost exactly balanced by the losses due to reduced genotype observations. For an underlying univariate normal mixture of genotype classification to be analyzed with a 2 x 3 chi-squared test, there is little, if any, increase in power using a no-call procedure.

Abstract
A failure to report or respond to stimuli presented in a portion of space is termed hemispatial neglect. Line bisection and line cancellation are two of the tests used most commonly to assess for neglect. Perhaps, because neglect can be induced by a variety of deficits, neither of these tests used alone is as sensitive as both used together. Hence, the primary purpose of this study was to assess the sensitivity, reliability and validity of a new test called the Character-line Bisection Task (CLBT) that combines features of both the bisection and cancellation tests. Since local attention and language are primarily mediated by and activate the left hemisphere, our second goal was to learn if the CLBT and especially the letter version induce a greater rightward bias than the solid-line bisection task. Eighty patients with acute right hemisphere stroke and 81 controls performed the CLBT that consists of two subtests, the Letter-line and Star-line Bisection tasks. All subjects also completed four conventional tests for neglect (Standard solid-line bisection, line cancellation, Star Cancellation, and figure copying). In the bisection tasks both patients and controls bisected to the right with the CLBT than with the solid-line bisection task, suggesting the CLBT induces asymmetrical hemispheric activation. This enhanced rightward deviation with the CLBT was the same for the Letter-line and Star-line Bisection tasks. In regard to sensitivity, we defined the presence of neglect syndrome based on a total score derived from performance of controls on all six tests. This total score detected 55 (68.8%) patients with neglect. Within this group, the Letter-line and Star-line tasks diagnosed neglect in 50 and 48 patients, respectively, resulting in the highest sensitivities (90.9, 87.3%) of the six tests. Thus, the CLBTs demonstrated higher sensitivities than the other commonly used neglect tests and these new tests can be useful for the detection and quantification of unilateral neglect.

Abstract
As part of an expansion to an average flow of 45.9 million gallons per day (174 mld), the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority wastewater treatment plant in the State of Michigan, USA, elected to install ultraviolet disinfection as a replacement for the existing chlorination process. This paper presents a unique methodology used in selecting the best system based on not only the life cycle costs, and O & M considerations but also the participation of the stakeholders. The Team members consisted of representatives of all departments at the Authority, and these Team members made the decision. The Team evaluated all criteria in the office, which was followed by verification at selected sites with similar types of equipment. The selected equipment then was pilot tested for validation of the dose-kill relationship under normal operation and also under reduced irradiation conditions. A low-pressure, high intensity system was selected, based on life-cycle cost, reliability, safety, and ease of operation. This paper describes the unique methodologies used in making that decision. The full-scale system is scheduled for start-up in Spring 2003.

Abstract
Caspase-11 is an essential mediator of septic shock response and caspase-11-deficient mice are resistant to LPS-induced shock. Here we report that LPS-induced caspase-11 regulates lymphocyte apoptosis by activating both caspase-3 and caspase-7. The activation of caspase-11 preceded that of caspase-1 and caspases-3/-7, and in the absence of caspase-11, the activation of caspases-3/-7 was significantly reduced. The early activation of caspases-3/-7 by caspase-11 was not affected by blocking of caspase-1 activity and IL-1beta release, implying that caspase-11 activates caspases-3/-7 independently of caspase-1 activation. Furthermore, we show that caspase-11-mediated apoptosis under septic condition is Bid-independent. Our work suggests that the human homologue of caspase-11 may be an effective therapeutic target for treatment of septic shock.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many variables influence the tactile bisection performance of normal subjects. Of these, studies that investigated the starting point effect have reported inconsistent results. OBJECTIVE To determine if the final search direction rather than the initial search direction (starting point) may have an effect on tactile bisection performance, especially when subjects are making multiple searches. METHODS The authors divided the experiment into single- and multiple-search tasks. Thirty-two blindfolded normal subjects were asked to indicate the midpoint of a rod after a one-way search (single-search task) or after two or more one-way searches (multiple-search task). In each task, the subject started on either end of the horizontally placed rods. The same procedure was also conducted with rods oriented vertically or radially. Therefore, there were six conditions (two starting points x three orientations). RESULTS In the single-search task, there was a significant effect of starting point or movement direction in all six conditions, with biases occurring toward the starting point from the true midpoint (this is termed the "overshoot phenomenon"). In the multiple-search task, however, there was no significant effect of the starting point in all six conditions. Rather, biases depended on the final movement direction in five of the six conditions, occurring toward the starting point of the final search. CONCLUSION Future research is needed to understand the mechanism of the overshoot phenomenon in tactile bisection by normal subjects and how the overshoot phenomenon influences patients with neglect.

Abstract
We have investigated the distribution of HLA class II alleles and haplotypes in 107 Korean families (207 parents and 291 children) for the HLA-DRB1, DRB3/B4/B5, DQA1, DQB1 and DPB1 loci. Numbers of alleles observed for each locus were DRB1: 25, DQA1: 14, DQB1: 15, and DPB1: 13. Only two to three alleles were observed for the DRB3 (*0101, *0202, *0301), DRB4 (*0103, * 0103102 N), and DRB5 (*0101, *0102) loci. These alleles showed strong associations with DRB1 alleles: DRB3*0101 with DRB1*1201, *1301 and *1403; DRB3*0301 with DRB1*1202 and *1302; DRB3*0202 with DRB1*0301, *1101, *1401 and *1405; DRB5*0101 and *0102 were exclusively associated with DRB1*1501 and *1502, respectively. The seven most common DRB1-DQB1 haplotypes of frequencies > 0.06 accounted for 52% of the total haplotypes. These haplotypes were exclusively related with the seven most common DRB1-DRB3/B4/B5-DQA1-DQB1 haplotypes: DRB1*1501-DRB5*0101-DQA1*0102-DQB1*0602 (0.085), DRB1*0405-DRB4*0103-DQA1*0303-DQB1*0401 (0.082), DRB1*09012-DRB4*0103-DQA1*0302-DQB1*03032 (0.082), DRB1*0101-DQA1*0101-DQB1*0501 (0.075), DRB1*0701-DRB4*0103-DQA1*0201-DQB1*0202 (0.065), DRB1*0803-DQA1*0103-DQB1*0601 (0.065), and DRB1*1302-DRB3*0301-DQA1*0102-DQB1*0604 (0.065). When these haplotypes were extended to the DPB1 locus, much diversification of haplotypes was observed and only one haplotype remained with a frequency of > 0.06: DRB1*0405-DRB4*0103-DQA1*0303-DQB1*0401-DPB1*0501 (0.062). Such diversification would have resulted from cumulated events of recombination within the HLA class II region, and the actual recombination rate observed between the HLA-DQB1 and DPB1 loci was 2.3% (10/438 informative meioses, including 2 recombinants informative by analysis of TAP genes). Comparison of the distribution of DRB1-DQB1 haplotypes with other populations revealed that Koreans are closest to Japanese people. However, Koreans share a few haplotypes with white people and Africans, which are rare in Japanese: DRB1*0701-DQB1*0202 and DRB1*1302-DQB1*0609. The results obtained in this study will provide useful information for anthropology, organ transplantation and disease association studies.

Abstract
Restriction of eye movement after surgery is an unusual but troublesome complication. A patient presented with a limitation of abduction after a 5 mm resection of medial rectus muscle and an 8 mm recession of lateral rectus muscle. Since the forced duction test was positive, restrictive factors were suggested to be implicated. A reparative operation was performed at the postoperative 9 month, and the forced duction test was negative after releasing the resected medial rectus muscle. The patient showed an improved abduction after recessing the resected muscle. Even after an uneventful surgery, resection of an extraocular muscle may cause restriction of ocular rotation caused by muscle scarring to the sclera or by an increased tightness of the muscle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) may show different presentation in tuberculosis (TB)-endemic countries. The aim of this study was to identify clinical and radiological predictors favoring benign or malignant SPN in TB-endemic region. METHODS Two hundred one SPNs in 201 consecutive Korean patients were included (< 3 cm in diameter, all confirmed by pathology or bacteriology, 93 benign and 108 malignant diseases). For clinical parameters, age, sex, smoking status and amount, and past history of pulmonary tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus were investigated retrospectively. For radiological parameters, size, location, margin characteristics, presence of calcification, pleural tag, surrounding satellite nodule, cavitation, internal low attenuation, open bronchus sign, surrounding ground-glass opacity, enhancement pattern of the SPNs and mediastinal lymph node (LN) enlargement were analyzed on chest CT scans. RESULTS Patients with a older age (60.7 +/- 9.6 vs 56.2 +/- 13.1, p = 0.008) and more than 40-pack years smoking (27.8% vs 14.0%, p = 0.017) were more frequently related with malignant than benign SPN. On chest CT scans, spiculated margin, contrast enhancement more than 20 Hounsfield unit and presence of pleural tag and mediastinal LN enlargement were more frequently observed in malignant than benign SPNs. In contrast to previous studies, satellite lesions (21.5% vs 1.9%, p < 0.001) and cavitation (20.4% vs 5.6%, p = 0.001) were more frequently seen in benign than malignant SPN. Positive predictive values of benignity were 90.9% and 76.0%, respectively, when satellite lesions and cavitation were found in cases of SPN. CONCLUSION Satellite lesions and cavitation on chest CT scan could be useful predictors for benign SPN in TB-endemic areas.

Abstract
We have investigated the frequencies of HLA-B*44 alleles and their haplotypic associations with HLA-A, -C, and -DRB1 loci in 450 healthy unrelated Koreans, including 213 parents from 107 families. All 79 samples (17.6%) typed as B44 by serology were analyzed for B*44 alleles using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) method. A total of three different B*44 alleles were detected: B*44031 (allele frequency 4.7%), B*44032 (3.1%), and B*4402 (1.3%). Three characteristic haplotypes revealing strong linkage disequilibrium were A*3303-Cw*1403-B*44031-DRB1*1302 (3.6%), A*3303-Cw*07-B*44032-DRB1*0701 (2.8%), and A*3201-Cw*05-B*4402-DRB1*0405 (0.4%). In addition, a strong association was observed for B*4402 with A*0301. The B*4403-bearing haplotypes of Koreans appear to be relatively common in Asian populations, whereas the B*4402-bearing haplotypes share some similarity to those of Caucasians. HLA-B44 alleles demonstrate a limited allelic diversity and comprise distinctive extended haplotypes in the Korean population. It is suggested that the frequencies of B44 subtype mismatches among ABDRB1-matched unrelated donor-recipient pairs would be low in this population.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture on gentamycin (GE) ototoxicity in guinea pigs. METHODS Brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and histochemistry were used in our study. RESULTS Electroacupuncture reduced the elevated BAEP thresholds and shortened the prolongated BAEP wave latencies and interpeak latencies. It protected the activity of mitochondrial enzyme in the cochlear hair cells and cochlear stria vascularis. CONCLUSION Electroacupuncture therapy can reduce GE ototoxicity. The mechanism of electroacupuncture therapy may be associated with its protected activity of mitochondrial enzyme and maintenance of energy metabolism of the cochlear hair cells and cochlear stria vascularis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate HLA class II associations with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in Koreans according to anti-topoisomerase I (anti-topo I), anti-centromere antibody (ACA), and anti-U1 ribonucleoprotein (RNP) status. METHODS HLA class II alleles (DRB1, DRB5, DQB1) were determined by DNA typing in 200 healthy control subjects and 74 patients with SSc: 35 anti-topo I positive, 3 ACA positive, and 19 anti-U1 RNP positive; among them were 34 diffuse and 40 limited subtypes, and 16 overlap syndrome. RESULTS Anti-topo I positive SSc was strongly associated with DRB1*1502 compared with both controls (23% vs 5%; Pcorr = 0.003) and anti-topo I negative patients (23% vs 3%; p = 0.009); our study confirms observations in Japanese. HLA-DR 67FLEDR71, especially 38V-67FLEDR71 sequence (carried on DRB5*0102 in linkage disequilibrium with DRB1*1502, DRB1*0802, DRBI*1101), showed the strongest association with anti-topo I response (46% vs 16% in controls; Pcorr = 0.001), and 38L-67FLEDR71 group alleles were not associated with anti-topo I response. Anti-topo I response was not significantly associated with HLA-DQB1 alleles in Koreans. There were only 3 ACA positive patients, and all patients had DRB1*1501 and DQB1*0602 as heterozygotes. Anti-U1 RNP occurred at a high frequency (63%) among patients with overlap syndrome, and was not associated with HLA-DR or DQ genes. Among anti-topo I negative patients, diffuse and limited subtypes of SSc were significantly associated with DRB1*0803 (47% vs 15% in controls; Pcorr < 0.05) and DRB1*1501 (50% vs 17% in controls; Pcorr < 0.01), respectively. These HLA associations have not been reported in other ethnic groups and possible associations with certain autoantibody subsets remain to be confirmed. CONCLUSION HLA-DR gene has a primary association with anti-topo I response, and HLA-DR 38V-67FLEDR71 group alleles including DRB5*0102 (in linkage disequilibrium with DRB1*1502) show the strongest association with anti-topo I response in Korean patients with SSc.

Abstract
The Sn-Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH: NAD+ 2-oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.8) gene of C. chinensis was cloned and its nucleotide sequence was analyzed. The gene was obtained by screening a genomic library with Drosophila melanogaster Gpdh and PCR amplification. The 5,126 bp gene obtained is comprised of one 5' untranslated region, eight exons, seven introns, and three 3' untranslated regions. Comparison of Gpdh of D. melanogaster with that of C. chinensis showed a 89.9% identity in the coding region, 70% in the intron, 79% in the entire nucleotide sequence, and 83.2% in the deduced amino acid sequence. The transcription initiation site is located 33 nucleotides upstream of the initiation codon, and the sequence analysis of the promoter region showed TATA and CAAT boxes at the 5' end. The stop codon (TAA) and polyadenylation signal (AATAAA) are located at the 3' end of each of the exons 6 to 8. These findings show that GPDH isozymes in C. chinensis are produced by the alternative processing of 3' exons. The occurrence of the three transcripts was proven by RT-PCR using synthetic oligonucleotides complementary to the predicted unique 3' regions. Compared to the D. melanogaster GPDH isozymes, GPDH-1, -2, and -3, C. chinensis GPDH showed 83.6%, 83%, and 84% identities, respectively.
