Abstract
A highly selective polymer has been prepared for the selective separation of nucleotides by the surface imprinting polymerization. A dialkyl quaternary ammonium chloride was effective as the functional molecule for recognizing the difference in the structure of nucleotides. Adsorptive behavior of the ionic species of the structural analogues, inosine-5'-monophosphoric acid (IMP) and guanosine-5'-monophosphoric acid (GMP), could be controlled by changing the pH condition. Surface imprinting polymers were prepared under different pH conditions; pH 9.0 and pH 8.5. The IMP-imprinted polymers exhibited higher template effect for IMP than for a structural analogue, GMP. A reference polymer prepared without the imprint molecule neither exhibit any selectivity to IMP nor to GMP. The adsorption behavior was quantitatively evaluated by the binding constants for the IMP-imprinted polymer. The imprinting polymer was found to recognize a small structural difference in nucleotides.

Abstract
The regeneration mechanism of injured rat colonic mucosa with 1% acetic acid was certified in this study. The injured colons were studied periodically on experimental days 1, 3, 5, 7, 15, and 20 with light and scanning electron microscopy. Specimens were examined in paraffin sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin; crypts were isolated with the HCl digestion method; and three-dimensional stromal collagen tissue was prepared with the NaOH cell maceration method. Damage to the mucosal and submucosal layers peaked between the 1st and 3rd days with edema, regeneration, necrosis, and inflammation. The edema and inflammation subsided, and mucosal atrophy and crypt reduction remained at around 1 week. At 2 weeks the mucosa became thick, and crypts showed many branches in their lower two-thirds; and by 3 weeks the mucosa had recovered to almost normal. The ratio of number of crypts at the base and surface was almost 1.5 on the 15th day and 1.0 on the 20th day, suggesting that each branch progresses upward to create an independent crypt. We believe that the fission mechanism plays an important role in crypt repair after acetic acid injury of the colonic mucosa. As the proliferative zone of the colonic crypt is localized at the crypt base, fission of the crypt starting at the base and progressing up to the surface is the most reasonable and efficient mechanism for repair by increasing the number of crypts.

Abstract
We experienced a very rare case of male intracystic breast carcinoma. A 66-year-old man presented at our hospital because of a palpable mass in his right breast. The imaging diagnosis was an intracystic carcinoma with hemorrhagic fluid and two mural nodules. Modified radical mastectomy was performed under general anesthesia. The pathological examination revealed the intracystic papillary carcinoma with foci of microinvasion. The findings of power Doppler ultrasonography and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging were very useful for the differential diagnosis of our case.

Abstract
Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of 6-bromo-2-naphthol has been investigated in aqueous micellar solutions of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers as well as in their mixed aggregates with sodium dodecyl sulfate. RTP of the phosphorophor was enhanced to some extent in the micelles of the block copolymers. However, marked enhancement of RTP was observed in the mixed aggregates. The enhancement of RTP is attributed to effective incorporation of the phosphorophor into the micelles and the aggregates, resulting in suppression of nonradiative deactivation of the phosphorescent state.

Abstract
A 45-year-old woman was first seen by us 2 years after becoming aware of a slightly painful subcutaneous mass in her left vulva. The mass was 7.5 x 3.0 cm in size, well circumscribed, mobile, and rubbery. It was at first clinically considered to be a benign tumor. Microscopically, the resected mass was composed of spindle or polygonal tumor cells which were cellularly or hypocellularly arranged with perivascular accentuation in a mucoid or fibrocollagenous background. Immunohistochemically, myxoid tumor cells were positive for vimentin but not for alpha-smooth muscle actin, CD34, CD31, desmin, or S-100 protein. The tumor was diagnosed as an angiomyofibroblastoma (AMBF), based on the typical findings of histology and immunohistochemistry. There are many histological types of vulvar tumors, and establishing a preoperative diagnosis is difficult in many patients. Rapid intraoperative pathological diagnosis should be performed if possible, considering the possibility of diseases such as AMFB and aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM). When AAM is suspected, the peripheral tissues should also be resected to prevent recurrence.

Abstract
A sensitive and specific analytical method for a potent antitumor agent, TZT-1027, in plasma has been developed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with [2H4]TZT-1027 as an internal standard (I.S.). A plasma sample was purified by solid-phase extraction on a C18 cartridge, followed by solvent extraction with diethyl ether. The extract was then injected into the LC-MS system. Chromatography was carried out on a C18 reversed-phase column using acetonitrile-0.05% trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) (55:45) as a mobile phase. Mass spectrometric analysis was performed in atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) mode with positive ion detection, and the protonated molecular ions ([M+H]+) of TZT-1027 and I.S. were monitored to allow quantitation. The method was applied to the determination of TZT-1027 in human, monkey, dog, rat and mouse plasma. As far as the sample preparation was concerned, good recoveries (73.5-99.1%) were obtained. The calibration curves were linear over the range of 0.25-100 ng per 1 ml of human, dog and rat plasma, per 0.5 ml of monkey plasma, and per 0.1 ml of mouse plasma. From the intra- and inter-day accuracy and precision, the present method satisfies the accepted criteria for bioanalytical method validation. TZT-1027 was stable when stored below -15 degrees C for 6 months in human plasma and for 3 weeks in plasma from other species. TZT-1027 was also stable in plasma through at least three freeze-thaw cycles.

Abstract
A technique for transmitting a narrow laser beam from a ground station to a satellite has been developed. The principle of pointing a laser beam to a distant target in a scattering medium by use of a backscattered laser beam image is described. We calculated the intensity distribution of the image by using a typical model of atmospheric coefficients. The method was applied to transmit a laser beam from a ground station to Engineering Test Satellite-VI. The accuracy of pointing the laser beam to the satellite was approximately 10 murad in this experiment.

Abstract
The abnormalities of haploid medaka embryos were characterized by comparative analysis of histologic sections and expression patterns of some developmental marker genes between haploids and diploids to clarify whether medaka haploids are useful for identifying mutants. During gastrulation, an obvious defect was first observed as a delay of epiboly and involution. This delay was shown to be caused not by the perturbation of mesoderm induction, but by widespread cell death and disorganization of cell arrangement in the blastoderm. This disorganization of cell arrangement was also detected in various organs, such as the brain, somite and notochord, at a late developmental stage. Ten days after fertilization, a small head and a short body axis were formed; these changes were also observed in haploid embryos in other species, but their cause is unknown. Based on the expression patterns of HNF3beta and goosecoid, it was demonstrated that a short and impotent prechordal plate induced near the marginal zone in haploid embryos was responsible for this defect. However, in these experiments it was also demonstrated that many major organs in haploids, such as the somite and notochord, differentiated incompletely but were present. Therefore, it was concluded that haploid screening is suitable for identifying mutations revealed by an obvious phenotype, such as dorsoventral polarity.

Abstract
The activities of the enzymes related to the malate-aspartate shuttle, which convert cytosolic NADH into mitochondrial NADH, were measured in red and white blood cells from thoroughbred horses undergoing continuous training (race horses) and compared with those in blood cells from riding horses. The activities of malate dehydrogenase (MDH), a rate-limiting enzyme for the malate-aspartate shuttle, were significantly elevated in the white blood cells (WBC) from race horses compared with those from riding horses. There were no significant differences in the activities of the enzymes in the red blood cells between race horses and riding horses. This increase in the MDH activity in their WBC is considered to reflect the increased metabolic activity in the race horses resulting from the training.

Abstract
The index of motor current amplitude (ICA) has feasibility in continuous-flow ventricular assist device control. It can demonstrate the safe range of pump speed, which exists between the starting point of total assistance (t-point) and the starting point of sucking (s-point). The objective of this study was to investigate how the ICA characteristic curve changes with each condition of contractility, preload, and afterload changes. We changed preload, afterload, and contractility of closed-mock circulation and plotted the change of the ICA value against pump speed. Then the shift of ICA characteristic curve against the change of each condition was considered. When preload increased, ICA characteristic curves showed the expansion of a safe range. When afterload increased, ICA characteristic curves were shifted to the high rotation side, slightly narrowing a safe range. When contractility increased, ICA characteristic curves showed the shift of a convex above to narrowing of a safe range. As these shift patterns were observed even when the driving conditions of a circuit changed, reproducibility was checked. Understanding the feature of a shift pattern of ICA characteristic curves correctly, a possibility that change of the heart function could be predicted by change of ICA value and a possibility for a flexible control method based on ICA, according to hemodynamic state, were suggested.

Abstract
Hantaviral antibodies were detected in the sera from Apodemus (A.) agrarius and A. peninsulae captured in Ningxia province, China by several different serological diagnostic methods. A total of 409 sera from rodent and insectivore species were collected in 1999 and examined by indirect immunofluorescent antibody assay (IFA). Among them, 19 of 191 (9.9%) sera of A. agrarius and 1 of 13 (7.7%) sera of A. peninsulae were positive for hantaviral antibodies. The other species (Rattus norvegicus, Mus musculus, Cricetulus triton, and Sorex cylindricauda) were negative. The reaction pattern of positive serum was characterized as scattered and granular virus antigens in the cytoplasm of hantavirus infected Vero E6 cells. Some of the A. agrarius sera positive for hantavirus were further examined by Western blotting (WB), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the focus reduction neutralization test (FRNT). By WB, positive sera showed the same specific reaction pattern of baculovirus-expressed recombinant hantaviral nucleocapsid protein, as shown in hantavirus-immune serum. By ELISA, IFA-positive sera showed significantly higher optical densities (around 1.0) than the negative A. agrarius sera. Hantaan type hantavirus was neutralized with the positive sera. These results suggest that A. agrarius have hantavirus infection and may play a role as a reservoir animal for hantavirus in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Province, China.

Abstract
Truncated recombinant nucleocapsid proteins (rNPs) of Hantaan virus (HTNV), Seoul virus (SEOV), and Dobrava virus (DOBV) were expressed by a baculovirus system. The truncated rNPs, which lacked 49 (rNP50) or 154 (rNP155) N-terminal amino acids of the NPs of HTNV, SEOV, and DOBV, were able to differentiate HTNV-, SEOV-, and DOBV-specific immune sera. Recombinant NP50s retained higher reactivities than rNP155s and were proven useful for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The ELISAs based on the rNP50s of HTNV, SEOV, and DOBV successfully differentiated three groups of patient sera, previously defined by neutralization tests: 17 with HTNV infection, 12 with SEOV infection, and 20 with DOBV infection. The entire rNP of Puumala virus (PUUV) distinguished PUUV infection from the other types of hantavirus infection. Serotyping with these rNP50s can be recommended as a rapid and efficient system for hantavirus diagnosis.

Abstract
The membrane system of the rat parietal cells in the resting state and after stimulation with tetragastrin (gastrin) was examined by ultra-high-resolution scanning electron microscopy after removal of the cytoplasmic matrix by the aldehyde-osmium-DMSO-osmium procedure. The intracellular canaliculus was lined with numerous microvilli. Viewed from the cytoplasmic side, the intracellular canaliculi appeared as an arborized system of cactus-like structures with numerous holes about 100 nm in diameter corresponding to the basal openings of the microvilli. The intracellular canaliculi were more developed after gastrin stimulation than in the resting state. In resting cells, most of the tubulovesicles were isolated, 100-200 nm in diameter, spherical or tubular in shape. After gastrin stimulation, these structures were interconnected by slender tubules of about 30 nm in diameter forming together tubulovesicular network. Stereo SEM views clearly demonstrated that the tubulovesicular network was connected with the intracellular canaliculus by the slender connecting tubulus. The increase in the canalicular membrane area and the depletion of tubulovesicles is explained by the transfer of the tubulovesicular membrane to the intracellular canaliculus. In the resting parietal cell, the microvilli are slender and their interior is packed with microfilaments. After gastrin stimulation, the microvilli are swollen and their interior is edematous. These morphological changes seem to indicate the accumulation of fluid in the microvilli after gastrin stimulation.

Abstract
Nineteen-hour variation of postural sway, alertness and rectal temperature during sleep deprivation were studied. Alertness decreased gradually at night and remained low until morning. Postural sway in the eyes-closed condition increased during early morning. In six of the eight subjects the greatest sway was observed during the 3-h period when rectal temperature was at its minimum. It is suggested that unbearable sleepiness during sleep deprivation will give rise to measurable impairment of postural balance especially during the time zone of temperature nadir.

Abstract
Dipstick 'Eiken' Rota and Dipstick 'Eiken' Adeno were the reagents used for the diagnosis of viral acute gastroenteritis using the immunochromatographical method. Dipstick 'Eiken' Rota and Dipstick 'Eiken' Adeno were evaluated for their sensitivity and specificity. Dipstick 'Eiken' Rota had a capacity to detect a purified rotavirus antigen in a concentration of 50 ng/ml. The sensitivity of Dipstick 'Eiken' Rota was 10 times higher than the sensitivity of the latex agglutination tests (Serodirect 'Eiken' Rota and ROTALEX DRY) and was almost the same as the immunochromatography test (Immu- noCard ST ROTAVIRUS) and the simplified EIA (TESTPACK ROTAVIRUS). With a concentration of 25 ng/ml, Dipstick 'Eiken' Adeno detected a purified adenovirus antigen. Dipstick 'Eiken' Adeno also detected adenovirus antigen in 64 higher dilutions than the latex agglutination test (ADENOLEX DRY). When Dipstick 'Eiken' Rota was compared with Serodirect 'Eiken' Rota among 100 fecal specimens of healthy children and children with viral acute gastroenteritis, the sensitivity was 100.0%, the specificity was 98.0%, and the agreement was 97.0%. When Dipstick 'Eiken' Adeno was compared with ADENOLEX DRY among 55 fecal specimens of healthy children and children with viral acute gastroenteritis, the sensitivity was 100.0 , the specificity was 93.8%, and the agreement was 96.4%. Dipstick 'Eiken' Rota and Dipstick 'Eiken' Adeno are found to be useful diagnostic assays for viral acute gastroenteritis in the clinical laboratories.

Abstract
SUMMARY We report a case of stenting for abrupt closure of the intracranial vertebral artery complicating balloon angioplasty. A 58-year-old man with symptomatic restenosis of the intracranial vertebral artery underwent balloon angioplasty, which was complicated by acute occlusion due to wall dissection. The acute occlusion of the lesion was completely recanalized by implanting a balloon-expandable stent designed for the coronary artery. Follow-up angiography 15 months after stenting did not show severe restenosis and the patient's symptoms disappeared after stenting. This therapeutic option may be useful as a means to bail out from acute occlusion of the intracranial artery caused by endovascular procedures.

Abstract
This phase II trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy of a new granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-supported multi-agent chemotherapy protocol, LSG15, for aggressive adult T-cell leukaemia-lymphoma (ATL). Ninety-six previously untreated patients with aggressive ATL were enrolled and grouped as: acute type (58), lymphoma type (28) and unfavourable chronic type (10). Therapy consisted of seven cycles of VCAP (vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin and prednisone), AMP (doxorubicin, ranimustine and prednisone) and VECP (vindesine, etoposide, carboplatin and prednisone). G-CSF was administered during the intervals between chemotherapy until neutrophil reconstitution was achieved. Eighty-one per cent of the 93 eligible patients responded [95% confidence interval (CI), 71.1-88.1%], with 33 patients obtaining complete response (35.5%) and 42 obtaining partial response (45.2%). The median survival time (MST) after registration was 13 months and the median follow-up duration of the 20 surviving patients was 4.2 years (range 2.8-5.6). Overall survival at 2 years was estimated to be 31.3% (95% CI, 22.0-40.5%). Grade 4 haematological toxicity of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia were observed in 65.3% and 52.6% of the patients respectively, but grade 4 non-haematological toxicity was observed in only one patient. LSG15 is feasible with mild non-haematological toxicity and improved the clinical outcome of ATL patients. MST and overall survival at 2 years were superior to those obtained by our previous trials.

Abstract
The cis-doubly N-confused porphyrin, H2N2CP, containing two adjacent confused pyrrole rings has been investigated from the point of view of its acid-base and electrochemical behavior in dichloromethane. This novel porphyrin isomer can form two metal-carbon bonds in the central core, stabilizing metal ions in unusually high oxidation states. Furthermore, the two outside N-pyrrole atoms remain available for acid-base and specific solvent interactions. Protonation of the pyrrole N atoms proceeds according to two successive steps, while only a single deprotonation step has been observed in the presence of bases. Similarly, in the case of the silver and copper complexes the protonation and deprotonation of the outer pyrrole rings have been detected, confirming the structure of the metalated species as M(III)-HN2CP. The electrochemical reduction of the metal ions (III/II redox process) and oxidation of the macrocycle ring have been detected respectively at -0.9 and 1.4 V based on spectroelectrochemical measurements in conjunction with the acid/base equilibrium studies. Additional waves observed around -0.5 and 1.3 V have been assigned to redox processes involving water molecules associated with the doubly N-confused porphyrins.

Prognostic significance of lymphocyte infiltration following preoperative chemoradiotherapy and hyperthermia for esophageal cancer. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2001; 49:1259-66. Abstract
PURPOSE Lymphocyte infiltration (LI) around cancerous lesions is an important immune response. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prognostic significance of LI after preoperative treatment for esophageal cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CR therapy), either bleomycin 30 mg or cisplatin 120 mg/m(2) plus radiation 30 Gy, was performed on 51 cases with esophageal cancer, while hyperthermo-chemoradiotherapy (HCR therapy) was also indicated in 71 cases. Using resected specimens, both the histopathologic effectiveness and degree of LI to cancerous lesions were evaluated. RESULTS The incidences of the cases in which preoperative treatment was effective were 56% and 92.3% in LI (-) and LI (++) group (p < 0.05). The presence of LI resulted in favorable prognosis; the 5-year survival rates of LI (++) and LI (+) patients were 75.5% and 46.1%, both of which were significantly better than LI (-) (27.8%, p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). Especially among cases whose preoperative treatment was moderately effective, a multivariate analysis revealed LI to be a favorable prognostic factor independent of other clinicopathologic factors (p = 0.0171). Regarding the preoperative treatment, the incidence of LI (++) was higher in the HCR group (16.9%) than in the CR group (2.0%, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS LI appears to be a prognostic predictor after preoperative CR therapy while, in addition, simultaneous hyperthermia may stimulate LI in cases with esophageal cancer.

Abstract
We report on the first measurement of a hypernuclear gamma-transition probability. gamma rays emitted in the E2(5/2(+)-->1/2(+)) transition of (7)(Lambda)Li were detected by a large-acceptance germanium detector array (Hyperball), and the lifetime of the parent state ( 5/2(+)) was determined by the Doppler shift attenuation method. The obtained result, 5.8(+0.9)(-0.7)+/-0.7 ps, was then converted into the reduced transition probability [ B(E2)] to be B(E2;5/2(+)-->1/2(+)) = 3.6+/-0.5(+0.5)(-0.4) e(2) fm(4). Compared with the B(E2) of the corresponding E2(3(+)-->1(+)) transition in the 6Li nucleus, our result gives evidence that the size of the 6Li core in (7)(Lambda)Li is smaller than the 6Li nucleus in the free space.

Abstract
Hantaviral antibodies were detected in the sera from patients with hepatic disease of unknown etiology in Japan by several different serological diagnostic methods. A total of 105 sera from diseased patients which were negative to A-G hepatitis virus infections in the Tokyo area were tested. Among them, 3 out of 73 sera from patients with chronic hepatic disease were positive to hantaviral antibody by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect immunofluorescent antibody assay (IFA) and Western blot analysis (WB). Neutralizing antibody titers of the 3 sera to Seoul virus (SEO) were 4 to 8 times higher than those to Hantaan virus (HTN). However, all of the 32 sera from patients with acute hepatitis were negative for hantaviral antibody. Among the 60 patients with chronic hepatitis in Hokkaido which were serologically negative to B and C hepatitis virus infection, one was positive for hantaviral antibody by ELISA and WB. In contrast, the sera from healthy adults in Japan, 550 from the Honshu and Kyushu regions, and 1,000 from the Hokkaido region, were negative for hantavirus antibody. These results show that hantaviral antibodies are more frequently detected in patients with hepatic disease than in healthy adults. However, the observation that no positive sera were detected from patients with acute hepatitis implies that hantavirus might not be directly related to hepatitis.

Abstract
We report herein the case of a 42-year-old woman in whom a solitary lung metastasis from stromal sarcoma of the breast was effectively treated by radiotherapy. The original breast tumor had been extirpated in a local hospital, and she was subsequently referred to our outpatient clinic for nonsurgical treatment. Pathological examination of the breast tumor had confirmed a diagnosis of stromal sarcoma. Radiation and systemic chemotherapy for the remnant disease were administered at our hospital; however, 8 months later, local recurrence and a solitary lung metastasis were recognized on a chest X-ray. A second lumpectomy of the recurrent breast tumor along with radiation for the lung metastasis and systemic chemotherapy were performed. After a 4-year disease-free period, there is still no sign of recurrence. This case serves to demonstrate the effectiveness of radiotherapy for the treatment of lung metastasis from stromal sarcoma of the breast.
