Effect of Feeding a Mixed Microbial Culture Fortified with Trace Minerals on the Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Late-fattening Hanwoo Steers: A Field Study

This study was conducted to determine the effects of feeding a trace minerals-fortified microbial culture (TMC) on the performance and carcass characteristics of late-fattening Hanwoo steers. A mixture of microbes (0.6% [v/w] of Enterobacter sp., Bacillus sp., Lactobacillus sp., and Saccharomyces sp.) was cultured with 99% feedstuff for ensiling and 0.4% trace minerals (zinc, selenium, copper, and cobalt). Sixteen late-fattening steers (mean age, 21.8 months) were allocated to two diets: a control diet (concentrate mix and rice straw) and a treated diet (control diet+3.3% TMC). At a mean age of 31.1 months, all the steers were slaughtered. The addition of TMC to the diet did not affect the average daily weight gain of the late fattening steers, compared with that of control steers. Moreover, consuming the TMC-supplemented diet did not affect cold carcass weight, yield traits such as back fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, yield index or yield grade, or quality traits such as meat color, fat color, texture, maturity, marbling score, or quality grade. However, consumption of a TMC-supplemented diet increased the concentrations of zinc, selenium, and sulfur (p<0.05) in the longissimus muscle. With respect to amino acids, animals consuming TMC showed increased (p<0.05) concentrations of lysine, leucine, and valine among essential amino acids and a decreased (p<0.05) concentration of proline among non-essential amino acids. In conclusion, the consumption of a TMC-supplemented diet during the late-fattening period elevated the concentrations of certain trace minerals and essential amino acids in the longissimus muscle, without any deleterious effects on performance and other carcass characteristics of Hanwoo steers.

Applicability and potential clinical effects of 2013 cholesterol guidelines on major cardiovascular events

BACKGROUND

The applicability to different race/ethnic groups and effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes of the 2013 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guidelines for cholesterol management remain to be determined. We estimated the proportion of Korean adults who would be affected by the 2013 cholesterol guidelines and to determine the related effects on cardiovascular events.

METHODS

Using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2008 to 2012 (n = 18,573), we compared the estimated number of statin candidates under the 2013 ACC/AHA and the Third Adult Treatment Panel (ATP-III) guidelines and extrapolated the results to 19.0 million Koreans between the ages of 40 and 75 years. Using an external cohort (n = 63,329) from the 2003 National Health Examination with 7 years of prospective follow-up, we determined the potential effects of recent recommendations changes on atherosclerotic CVD events (composite of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke).

RESULTS

Compared with the ATP-III guidelines, the ACC/AHA guidelines would increase the number of statin candidates from 3.5 million (18.6%) to 6.7 million (35.1%). The increase of statin candidates would be larger among older adults (60-75 years; from 29.8% to 74.9%) as compared with younger adults (40-59 years; from 15.6% to 19.8%) and among men (from 25.7% to 45.4%) compared with women (from 14.6% to 26.8%). In the external cohort, compared with adults who were recommended by neither of the 2 guidelines, those who were recommended by both and those who were recommended by ACC/AHA but not ATP-III guidelines had significantly higher risks of atherosclerotic CVD events (hazard ratios [HRs] 3.65 [95% CI, 3.33-4.02] and 3.98 [95% CI 3.64-4.35], respectively). However, adults who were recommended by ATP-III but not ACC/AHA guidelines did not have an increased risk (HR 0.90, 95% CI 0.64-1.28).

CONCLUSIONS

In the Korean population, the 2013 ACC/AHA cholesterol guidelines would substantially increase the number of adults who are potentially eligible for statin therapy and would recommend statin therapy for more adults at higher cardiovascular risk. However, the clinician-patient discussion of the potential benefits, possible harms, and other factors before the initiation of statin therapy must be considered.

Mid-trimester amniotic fluid pro-inflammatory biomarkers predict the risk of spontaneous preterm delivery in twins: a retrospective cohort study

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the association between the concentrations of immune-related proteins in mid-trimester amniotic fluid (AF) and the subsequent risk of spontaneous preterm delivery in twins.

STUDY DESIGN

The study population consisted of consecutive women with a twin pregnancy who underwent clinically indicated genetic amniocentesis at 15 to 20 weeks, and had a subsequent spontaneous delivery in the early preterm period (<32 weeks (cases)) or at term (37 to 42 weeks (controls)). AF was analyzed for cytokines (interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13 and IL-15, interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α), matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-8, MMP-9 and MMP-12), and chemokines (complement factor-D/Adipsin, Serpin E1/PAI-1, Adiponectin/Acrp30, C-Reactive Protein, CCL2/MCP-1, Leptin, Resistin) using multiplex immunoassay kits. The association between AF protein levels and subsequent early preterm birth were examined.

RESULT

A total of 96 sets of twins were enrolled, including 17 early preterm birth cases and 79 term controls. AF concentrations of IL-6, IL-8, MMP-3, MMP-8 and MMP-9, and CCL2/MCP-1 were significantly higher in cases than controls. Among these analytes, the combination of AF IL-8 and MMP-9 values had the highest predictive value for early preterm birth. The risk was 8% (10/132) for IL-8<1200 pg ml(-1) and MMP-9<1000 pg ml(-1), 30% (15/50) for IL-8>1200 pg ml(-1) or MMP-9>1000 pg ml(-1), and 90% (9/10) for IL-8>1200 pg ml(-1) and MMP-9>1000 pg ml(-1) (P<0.001).

CONCLUSION

High concentrations of IL-8 and MMP-9 in mid-trimester AF in twins predicted well the risk of early preterm birth.

The reliability and accuracy of measuring anteversion of the acetabular component on plain anteroposterior and lateral radiographs after total hip arthroplasty

There is no single standardised method of measuring the orientation of the acetabular component on plain radiographs after total hip arthroplasty. We assessed the reliability and accuracy of three methods of assessing anteversion of the acetabular component for 551 THAs using the PolyWare software and the methods of Liaw et al, and of Woo and Morrey. All measurements of the three methods had excellent intra- and inter-observer reliability. The values of the PolyWare software, which determines version of the acetabular component by edge detection were regarded as the reference standard. Although the PolyWare software and the method of Liaw et al were similarly precise, the method of Woo and Morrey was significantly less accurate (p < 0.001). The method of Liaw et al seemed to be more accurate than that of Woo and Morrey when compared with the measurements using the PolyWare software. If the qualified lateral radiograph was selected, anteversion measured using the method of Woo and Morrey was considered to be relatively reliable.

Economic Burden of Cancer in Korea during 2000-2010

PURPOSE

This study estimated the economic burden of cancer in Korea during 2000-2010 by cancer site, gender, age group, and cost component.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Data came from national health insurance claims data and information from Statistics Korea. Based on the cost of illness method, this study calculated direct, morbidity and mortality cost of cancer in the nation during 2000-2010 by cancer site, gender, and age group.

RESULTS

With an average annual growth rate of 8.9%, the economic burden of cancer in Korea increased from 11,424 to 20,858 million US$ (current US dollars) during 2000-2010. Colorectal, thyroid, and breast cancers became more significant during the period, i.e., the 5th/837, the 11th/257, and the 7th/529 in 2000 to the 3rd/2,210, the 5th/1,724, and the 6th/1,659 in 2010, respectively (rank/amount in million US$ for the total population). In addition, liver and stomach cancers were prominent during the period in terms of the same measures, i.e., the 1st/2,065 and the 2nd/2,036 in 2000 to the 1st/3,114 and the 2nd/3,046 in 2010, respectively. Finally, the share of mortality cost in the total burden dropped from 71% to 51% in Korea during 2000-2010, led by colorectal, thyroid, breast, and prostate cancers during the period. These results show that the economic burden of cancer in Korea is characterized by an increasing importance of chronic components.

CONCLUSION

Incorporation of distinctive epidemiological, sociocultural contexts into Korea's cancer control program, with greater emphasis on primary prevention such as sodium-controlled diet and hepatitis B vaccination, may be needed.

Comparison of surgical treatment with direct repair versus conservative treatment in young patients with spondylolysis: a prospective, comparative, clinical trial

BACKGROUND CONTEXT

Although direct repair (DR) with screw fixation at the pars defect is a common surgical treatment for lumbar spondylolysis, it is unknown whether DR leads to better outcomes for young patients with spondylolysis than traditional nonsurgical treatment.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether DR was associated with better outcomes for lumbar spondylolysis in young patients than traditional conservative treatment.

STUDY DESIGN

This is a prospective cohort study.

PATIENT SAMPLE

Of 1,784 patients with low back pain in the reference period, 149 young patients with spondylolysis who followed up for at least 1 year were enrolled in the study.

OUTCOME MEASURES

The primary outcome was pain intensity at the lower back measured with a Visual Analog Scale. Secondary outcomes included the functional outcome as measured with the Oswestry disability index (ODI) and the 12-item short-form health survey (SF-12) consisting of the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores, the radiologic outcome as measured with lumbar spine radiographs and computed tomography scans, and complications of treatment.

METHODS

This was a prospective comparative study between two groups of patients who were treated with either conservative treatment or surgery for lumbar spondylolysis. Enrolled patients self-selected their own treatment and were allocated to either the traditional care group with conservative treatment (87 patients) or the surgery group (62 patients). All patients were followed up for at least 1 year.

RESULTS

Pain intensity at the lower back did not differ significantly between groups at the final follow-up. Likewise, the ODI and SF-12 (PCS and MCS) scores did not differ significantly between groups (p=.13, .71, and .68, respectively). The change in the gap distance of the pars defect at the final follow-up was significantly different between groups (traditional care group: +0.8±0.4 mm; surgery group: -0.7±0.5; p=.01). The union rate at 1 year after surgical treatment was 52% (32/61). The rate of complications was significantly higher in the surgery group (31%) than the traditional care group (20%) (p=.02).

CONCLUSIONS

Conservative treatment for young patients with spondylolysis may produce similar clinical outcomes and fewer complications over 12-month follow-up than surgical treatment with DR.

The Impact of Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebrae on Therapeutic Outcomes of Transforaminal Epidural Injection in Patients with Lumbar Disc Herniation

BACKGROUND

Although some studies have evaluated the clinical impact of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV), few have attempted to determine an effective conservative treatment method for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) presenting concurrently with LSTV.

METHODS

We prospectively enrolled 291 consecutive patients who were followed-up for at least one year after transforaminal epidural injection (TFEI) for LDH. We confirmed the presence of LSTV with Paik et al.'s method, the Castellvi classification, and the Southworth and Bersack method. Clinical outcomes were evaluated with a visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain intensity and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for functional status.

RESULTS

Of the 291 patients, 47 (16.2%) had LSTV, including 33 with sacralization and 14 with lumbarization, while 244 (83.8%) did not have LSTV. Patients in both groups improved significantly after TFEI in terms of the VAS (P < 0.001) and ODI (P < 0.001) scores. However, LDH patients with LSTV had a worse clinical outcome after six months of TFEI than did those without LSTV, with a significant difference between groups for both the VAS (P < 0.01) and ODI (P = 0.01) scores. LDH patients with sacralization had worse post-treatment clinical outcomes than LDH patients with lumbarization (P < 0.001) or LDH patients without LSTV (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Sacralization can reduce the improvement after TFEI among LDH patients, while lumbarization appears to have no direct effect on TFEI outcomes. The presence of sacralization should be identified before TFEI, and if present, patients should be informed that the outcomes of TFEI may not be as good as they would be if sacralization was not present.

Generalized Joint Laxity is Associated with Primary Occurrence and Treatment Outcome of Lumbar Disc Herniation

BACKGROUND

We investigated relationships between generalized joint laxity and primary lumbar disc herniation occurrence and compared clinical outcomes after conservative treatment in lumbar disc herniation patients with and without generalized joint laxity.

METHODS

The study group included 128 men, and the control group included 276 men matched for age and body mass index with the study group. The primary outcome measure was the presence or absence of generalized joint laxity using the Beighton scale. Clinical outcomes measured by the visual analog scale and the Oswestry disability index 2 years after conservative treatment were the secondary outcome measure.

RESULTS

Generalized joint laxity prevalence was 13.2% in the study group and 5.1% in the control group, a significant difference (P=0.01). Spearman correlation analysis revealed that weight (r=0.162, P=0.03), body mass index (r=0.131, P=0.03), and generalized joint laxity (r=0.372, P<0.01) significantly correlated with lumbar disc herniation occurrence. In multivariate regression analysis, generalized joint laxity was the only significant lumbar disc herniation predictor (P=0.002; 95% confidence interval, 1.08 to 5.26). Generalized joint laxity in lumbar disc herniation patients was associated with worse clinical outcomes after conservative treatment measured by visual analog scale scores for lower extremity pain (P=0.02), lower back pain (P=0.03), and Oswestry disability index scores (P=0.03).

CONCLUSION

Generalized joint laxity might be associated with lumbar disc herniation occurrence and might also be a negative predictor of worse clinical outcomes after conservative treatment.

The effects of a tailored intensive care unit delirium prevention protocol: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

A decreased incidence of delirium following the application of non-pharmacologic intervention protocols to several patient populations has been previously reported. However, few studies have been conducted to examine the effects of their application to intensive care unit (ICU) patients.

OBJECTIVES

To examine the effects of applying a tailored delirium preventive protocol, developed by the authors, to ICU patients by analyzing its effects on delirium incidence, in-hospital mortality, ICU readmission, and length of ICU stay in a Korean hospital.

DESIGN

A single-blind randomized controlled trial.

SETTINGS

A 1049-bed general hospital with a 105-bed ICU.

PARTICIPANTS

Sixty and 63 ICU patients were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups, respectively.

METHODS

The researchers applied the delirium prevention protocol to the intervention group every day for the first 7 days of ICU hospitalization. Delirium incidence, mortality, and re-admission to the ICU during the same hospitalization period were analyzed by logistic regression analysis; the 7- and 30-day in-hospital mortality by Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox proportional hazard regression analysis; and length of ICU stay was assessed by linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

Application of the protocol had no significant effect on delirium incidence, in-hospital mortality, re-admission to the ICU, or length of ICU stay. Whereas the risk of 30-day in-hospital mortality was not significantly lower in the intervention than in the control group (OR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.10-1.09), we found a significantly decreased 7-day in-hospital mortality in the intervention group after protocol application (HR: 0.09; 95% CI: 0.01-0.72).

CONCLUSIONS

Application of a tailored delirium prevention protocol to acute stage patients during the first 7 days of ICU hospitalization appeared to reduce the 7-day in-hospital risk of mortality only for this patient population.

Drug-loaded gold/iron/gold plasmonic nanoparticles for magnetic targeted chemo-photothermal treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

We have developed methotrexate (MTX)-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid, PLGA) gold (Au)/iron (Fe)/gold (Au) half-shell nanoparticles conjugated with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD), which can be applied for magnetic targeted chemo-photothermal treatment, and in vivo multimodal imaging of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, local heat is generated at the inflammation region due to the NIR resonance of Au half-shells and MTX release from PLGA nanoparticles is accelerated. The Fe half-shell layer embedded between the Au half-shell layers enables in vivo T2-magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in addition to NIR absorbance imaging. Furthermore, the delivery of the nanoparticles to the inflammation region in collagen-induced arthritic (CIA) mice, and their retention can be enhanced under external magnetic field. When combined with consecutive NIR irradiation and external magnetic field application, these nanoparticles provide enhanced therapeutic effects with an MTX dosages of only 0.05% dosage compared to free MTX therapy for the treatment of RA.

Strain elastography features of epidermoid tumours in superficial soft tissue: differences from other benign soft-tissue tumours and malignant tumours

OBJECTIVE

We evaluated ultrasonographic features of superficial epidermoid tumour with a focus on strain elastography (SE) features that will help in the differential diagnosis of epidermoid tumour from other benign and malignant soft-tissue tumours.

METHODS

We retrospectively evaluated ultrasonographic and SE data of 103 surgically confirmed superficial soft-tissue tumours and tumour-like lesions: 29 cases of epidermoid tumour, 46 cases of other benign tumours and 28 cases of malignant tumour. SE and B-mode imaging were performed at the same time. SE characteristics were assigned into four grades (1-4) according to their elasticity. Interobserver agreement for the four SE scores between the two radiologists was analysed using kappa statistics. We classified each SE finding as a hard lesion (SE Score 3-4) or soft lesion (SE Score 1-2) and compared these findings using the χ(2) test to identify whether a significant difference in mass hardness existed among epidermoid tumour, other benign tumour and malignant tumour.

RESULTS

Overall interobserver agreement according to the four SE scores was moderate (κ = 0.540), and overall agreement for the hardness [soft (Score 1-2) or hard (Score 3-4)] was almost perfect (κ = 0.825). Malignant tumours showed higher SE scores (3-4, hard nature) than did epidermoid tumour or other benign soft-tissue tumours. There were no differences in SE score between epidermoid tumour and other benign tumours.

CONCLUSION

Superficial epidermoid tumour exhibits a softer nature than does malignant tumour but does not have a different SE pattern from other benign tumours.

SE features of epidermoid tumour might be helpful in differentiating from other benign and malignant tumours.

Xylan catabolism is improved by blending bioprospecting and metabolic pathway engineering in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Complete utilization of all available carbon sources in lignocellulosic biomass still remains a challenge in engineering Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Even with efficient heterologous xylose catabolic pathways, S. cerevisiae is unable to utilize xylose in lignocellulosic biomass unless xylan is depolymerized to xylose. Here we demonstrate that a blended bioprospecting approach along with pathway engineering and evolutionary engineering can be used to improve xylan catabolism in S. cerevisiae. Specifically, we perform whole genome sequencing-based bioprospecting of a strain with remarkable pentose catabolic potential that we isolated and named Ustilago bevomyces. The heterologous expression of xylan catabolic genes enabled S. cerevisiae to grow on xylan as a single carbon source in minimal medium. A combination of bioprospecting and metabolic pathway evolution demonstrated that the xylan catabolic pathway could be further improved. Ultimately, engineering efforts were able to achieve xylan conversion into ethanol of up to 0.22 g/L on minimal medium compositions with xylan. This pathway provides a novel starting point for improving lignocellulosic conversion by yeast.

The effect of anaerobic fungal inoculation on the fermentation characteristics of rice straw silages

AIMS

To identify whether the supplement of anaerobic fungi isolates with cellulolytic activities accelerates the silage fermentation.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Three fungal isolates with the highest cellulolytic activities among 45 strains of anaerobic fungal stock in our laboratory were selected and used as silage inoculants. The rice straw (RS) was ensiled for 10, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days with four treatments of anaerobic fungi derived from the control (no fungus), Piromyces M014 (isolated from the rumen of the Korean native goat), Orpinomyces R001 (isolated from the duodenum of Korean native cattle) and Neocallimastix M010 (isolated from the guts of termites), respectively. The silages inoculated with pure strains of fungi showed a higher fungal population (P < 0.05) when compared to the control silage. In situ ruminal DM disappearance of RS silage (RSS) was improved with fungal treatment. SEM observation showed live fungal cells inoculated in RS could survive during the ensiling process. Overall, this study indicated that the inoculation of anaerobic fungi decreased the cell wall content of the RSS and increased in situ dry matter disappearance.

CONCLUSIONS

The supplementation of anaerobic fungi isolates to RSS as a silage inoculant improves the RSS quality.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

This is the first study showing the potential application of supplement of anaerobic fungi isolated from the guts may be applied industrially as an alternate feed additive that improves the silage quality.

The impact of generalized joint laxity on the occurrence and disease course of primary lumbar disc herniation

BACKGROUND CONTEXT

Generalized joint laxity (GJL) has been associated with spine-related disorders such as low back pain, accelerated disc degeneration, and recurrence after discectomy surgery for primary lumbar disc herniation (p-LDH). Generalized joint laxity might be a causative factor of p-LDH, but this relationship is poorly understood. In addition, the impact of GJL on outcomes after the treatment for p-LDH has not been reported.

PURPOSE

To explore relationship between GJL and p-LDH and to compare clinical and radiological outcomes post-therapy in p-LDH patients with or without GJL.

STUDY DESIGN

A retrospective comparative study.

PATIENT SAMPLE

The study group included 203 males, and the control group included 362 males who were matched for age, race, and body mass index with the study group.

OUTCOME MEASURES

The primary outcome was the presence or absence of GJL according to the Beighton scale. The secondary outcome measures included the clinical outcome according to a visual analog scale and the Oswestry disability index and the radiological outcome.

METHODS

We compared baseline data between groups, and we evaluated the impact of GJL on outcomes after different types of several treatment for LDH.

RESULTS

The prevalence of GJL was significantly higher in the study group (10.8%) than in the matched control group (4.4%) (p=.003). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, GJL was the only significant predictor (p=.012). For all treatment methods, patients with GJL had worse clinical outcomes than did patients without GJL. In the patients treated with lumbar discectomy surgery, the differential Cobb value at the last follow-up was higher in the GJL patients than in the non-GJL patients (p=.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Generalized joint laxity was closely related to p-LDH and may be a causative factor. In addition, patients with GJL had worse clinical and radiological outcomes than patients without GJL. Consequently, GJL should be evaluated preoperatively, and this information should be communicated to p-LDH patients with GJL.

Evaluating the validity of the Braden scale using longitudinal electronic medical records

In this study, we evaluated the validity of the Braden scale in assessing the risk of pressure ulcers. Longitudinal clinical data including weekly Braden scale scores for 1,138 patients admitted to a university hospital who developed pressure ulcers during the hospital stay and 4,794 who did not develop pressure ulcers were extracted from the hospital's electronic medical record system. Braden scale scores at three points during hospitalization were analyzed: the initial score at admission, the last score recorded before diagnosis (for pressure ulcer patients) or before discharge (for those without pressure ulcers), and the minimum (highest-risk) score recorded. Using these data, the predictive validity of the scale was evaluated using a cut-off score of 18, followed by an evaluation of the relative advantages and disadvantages of cut-off scores from 12 to 19. Among patients in the general units, the minimum score had the greatest sensitivity (0.85), negative predictive value (NPV; 0.98), and Youden index (0.73). Among patients in the intensive care units, the last score had the best NPV (0.65), Youden index (0.53), and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.78), while the minimum score had the highest sensitivity (0.88). The optimal cut-off score for patients in the general units was 19 and for those in the intensive care units was 18. These results support a higher cut-off score than previously recommended, particularly for severely ill patients who are more prone to developing pressure ulcers.

Effectiveness of nursing management information systems: a systematic review

Objectives

The purpose of this study was to review evaluation studies of nursing management information systems (NMISs) and their outcome measures to examine system effectiveness.

Methods

For the systematic review, a literature search of the PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted to retrieve original articles published between 1970 and 2014. Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms included informatics, medical informatics, nursing informatics, medical informatics application, and management information systems for information systems and evaluation studies and nursing evaluation research for evaluation research. Additionally, manag^* and admin^*, and nurs^* were combined. Title, abstract, and full-text reviews were completed by two reviewers. And then, year, author, type of management system, study purpose, study design, data source, system users, study subjects, and outcomes were extracted from the selected articles. The quality and risk of bias of the studies that were finally selected were assessed with the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomized Studies (RoBANS) criteria.

Results

Out of the 2,257 retrieved articles, a total of six articles were selected. These included two scheduling programs, two nursing cost-related programs, and two patient care management programs. For the outcome measurements, usefulness, time saving, satisfaction, cost, attitude, usability, data quality/completeness/accuracy, and personnel work patterns were included. User satisfaction, time saving, and usefulness mostly showed positive findings.

Conclusions

The study results suggest that NMISs were effective in time saving and useful in nursing care. Because there was a lack of quality in the reviewed studies, well-designed research, such as randomized controlled trials, should be conducted to more objectively evaluate the effectiveness of NMISs.

Effects of Cordyceps militaris on the growth of rumen microorganisms and in vitro rumen fermentation with respect to methane emissions

This experiment was designed to investigate the effects of different concentrations (0.00, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, and 0.30 g/L) of dried Cordyceps militaris mushroom on in vitro anaerobic ruminal microbe fermentation and methane production using soluble starch as a substrate. Ruminal fluids were collected from Korean native cattle, mixed with phosphate buffer (1:2), and incubated anaerobically at 38 °C for 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h. The addition of C. militaris significantly increased total volatile fatty acid and total gas production. The molar proportion of acetate was decreased and that of propionate was increased, with a corresponding decrease in the acetate:propionate ratio. As the concentration of C. militaris increased from 0.10 to 0.30 g/L, methane and hydrogen production decreased. The decrease in methane accumulation relative to the control was 14.1, 22.0, 24.9, 39.7, and 40.9% for the 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, and 0.30 g/L treatments, respectively. Ammonia-N concentration and numbers of live protozoa decreased linearly with increasing concentrations of C. militaris. The pH of the medium significantly decreased at the highest level of C. militaris compared with the control. In conclusion, C. militaris stimulated mixed ruminal microorganism fermentation and inhibited methane production in vitro. Therefore, C. militaris could be developed as a novel compound for antimethanogenesis.
