Abstract
A series of batch experiments on free swell, hydraulic conductivity, and contaminant removal efficiency was performed for the combination of bentonite and zero valent iron (ZVI), in order to identify the optimal mixing ratio between bentonite and ZVI. The swell volume of the bentonite-ZVI mixtures did not change with increasing ZVI, and the hydraulic conductivity decreased as the ZVI increased. The reduction rates and removal efficiencies of trichloroethylene (TCE), Chromium(VI), and nitrate increased as ZVI content increased, while there was no practical difference in removal efficiencies between 30% and 100% of ZVI weight contents. Therefore, 30% of the ZVI content was used as the optimal amount in this research since the physical properties, such as swell volume and hydraulic conductivity, as well as the contaminant sorption and reduction were the most efficient. From Raman spectrophotometer analysis, peaks of magnetite, maghemite, and hematite were observed on the surfaces of the bentonites that had been used for the mixtures. Since iron oxides are strong adsorbers of contaminants and magnetites can facilitate the electron transfer of irons, these formations are beneficial for the long-term performance of the iron metals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persons with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) who use drugs appear to be at increased risk for colonization and infection with Staphylococcus aureus. Little is known about the nature of and risk factors responsible for this association. This study is among the first to prospectively follow carriage and infection in this uniquely high-risk population. METHODS We prospectively followed the cases of 75 patients with AIDS in a residential drug treatment facility and screened for S. aureus nasal colonization and infection. RESULTS Thirty-seven baseline cultures (49%) were positive for S. aureus, and 81% of subjects were colonized at least once during the study. Thirteen subjects experienced 17 infections. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and sequence-based typing methods revealed that 244 (92%) of the isolates belonged to either clonal type A or B. Clonal type A was methicillin-susceptible. Clonal type B consisted of 3 main subtypes (B1, B2, and B3), all with the same allelic profile (ST8) and staphylococcal protein A gene (spa) type (7). Of note, subtype B1 was methicillin-susceptible (ST8 and spa type 7), lacking mecA, whereas the other B clones were methicillin-resistant. Both clones were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Clonal type B isolates were relatively resistant, suggesting prior exposure to the health care setting. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates a sustained high rate of S. aureus carriage and infection. It demonstrates the capacity of unique methicillin-resistant S. aureus clones with an established linkage to earlier outbreaks of methicillin-resistant S. aureus, as well as to human immunodeficiency virus--infected subjects, to persist in this residential setting. It also illustrates the apparent genetic instability or transmissibility of the staphylococcal chromosomal cassette mec type IV element.

Abstract
A total of 202 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) single-patient isolates recovered between January and June 1998 in two hospitals in Miami, Florida, were characterized by a combination of several molecular typing techniques: multilocus sequence typing, spaA typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and determination of the structure of the SCCmec element. The overwhelming majority of the isolates-187 of 202, or 93%-belonged to one of three internationally spread epidemic clones which were identified on the basis of their multilocus sequence type (ST) as E-MRSA-16 (ST36), the New York clone V (ST8), and the New York/Japan clone (ST5; SCCmec II) and its single- and double-locus variants. The rest of the isolates (15 of 202, or 7%) were more genetically diverse and were each recovered from a few patients only. Of the 23 MRSA strains isolated from confirmed human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients, as many as 17 (or 70%) belonged to a single ST8 clone carrying SCCmec type IV. The data provide further evidence for the conclusion of earlier studies that most MRSA disease in hospitals is caused by relatively few pandemic clones.

Abstract
Indoor air quality can be affected by indoor sources, ventilation, decay and outdoor levels. Although technologies exist to measure these factors, direct measurements are often difficult. The purpose of this study was to develop an alternative method to characterize indoor environmental factors by multiple indoor and outdoor measurements. Daily indoor and outdoor NO2 concentrations were measured for 30 consecutive days in 28 houses in Brisbane, Australia, and for 21 consecutive days in 37 houses in Seoul, Korea. Using a mass balance model and regression analysis, penetration factor (ventilation rate divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) and source strength factor (source strength divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) were calculated using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements. Subsequently, the ventilation rate and NO2 source strength were estimated. Geometric means of ventilation rate were 1.44 air change per hour (ACH) in Brisbane, assuming a residential NO2 deposition constant of 1.05/h, and 1.36 ACH in Seoul, with the measured residential NO2 deposition constant of 0.94/h. Source strengths of NO2 were 15.8 +/- 18.2 and 44.7 +/- 38.1 microg/m3/h in Brisbane and Seoul, respectively. In conclusion, indoor environmental factors were effectively characterized by this method using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements.

Abstract
Recently, for the first time in the history of this bacterial species, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carrying the enterococcal vanA gene complex and expressing high level resistance to vancomycin was identified in clinical specimens (CDC (2002) MMWR 51, 565-567). The purpose of our studies was to understand how vanA is expressed in the heterologous background of S. aureus and how it interacts with the mecA-based resistance mechanism, which is also present in these strains and is targeted on cell wall biosynthesis. The vanA-containing staphylococcal plasmid was transferred from the clinical vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) strain HIP11714 (CDC (2002) MMWR 51, 565-567) to the methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strain COL for which extensive genetic and biochemical information is available on staphylococcal cell wall biochemistry and drug resistance mechanisms. The transconjugant named COLVA showed high and homogeneous resistance to both oxacillin and vancomycin. COLVA grown in vancomycin-containing medium produced an abnormal peptidoglycan: all pentapeptides were replaced by tetrapeptides, and the peptidoglycan contained at least 22 novel muropeptide species that frequently showed a deficit or complete absence of pentaglycine branches. The UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide, the major component of the cell wall precursor pool in vancomycin-sensitive cells was replaced by UDP-MurNAc-depsipeptide and UDP-MurNAc-tetrapeptide. Transposon inactivation of the beta-lactam resistance gene mecA caused complete loss of beta-lactam resistance but had no effect on the expression of vancomycin resistance. The two major antibiotic resistance mechanisms encoded by mecA and vanA residing in the same S. aureus appear to use different sets of enzymes for the assembly of cell walls.
