Abstract
Natural biomass magnetic porous carbon was successfully prepared via a cost-effective and green route using mangosteen shell as raw material. The prepared magnetic porous carbon was used as a magnetic solid phase extraction adsorbent for bisphenols enrichment from beverages followed by high-performance liquid chromatographyquadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry. Parameters affecting extraction efficiency including sample solutionpH, adsorbent amount, extraction time, eluent type and volume were optimized. Results showed that biomass magnetic porous carbon had excellent adsorption properties for bisphenols due to its large specific surface area and abundant functional groups, which could form hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking with bisphenols. The enrichment factor of 3 bisphenolswere in the range of15∼19. Under optimum conditions, favorable linearity for all analytes was obtained with correlation coefficients higher than 0.998. Recoveries of spiked samples were in the range of 88.5%∼105.1% with relative standard deviation of 3.4%∼5.5%. Abstract
In the present study, a rapid and sensitive determination method of seven mycotoxins was developed using immunomagnetic solid-phase extraction (IMPSE) coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS. Monoclonal antibodies were conjugated with CNBr superparamagnetic beads, and the major parameters affecting the IMPSE efficiency were systematically investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the mycotoxins were purified with the IMSPE procedure within 15 min and simultaneously quantified by UHPLC-MS/MS. Good linearities of the analytic method were established with the determination coefficients (R2) ranging from 0.9952 to 0.9997. The limit of quantifications were 0.04 µg kg-1 ∼ 0.16 µg kg-1, which fully satisfied the regulatory maximum levels. The recoveries were 84.5-112.7% with intra-day and inter-day precision less than 15.2%. Finally, the proposed IMSPE-UHPLC-MS/MS was successfully utilized to analyze seven mycotoxins in peanut, maize, and wheat, providing a simple and robust extraction and enrichment procedure of hydrophilic and zwitterionic analytes from complex matrix.

Abstract
Microfluidic chip analysis has great potential advantages such as high integration, fast speed analysis, and automatic operation and is widely used not only in biological fields but also in many other analytical areas such as agriculture and food safety. Herein, a fully automatic multi-class multi-residue analysis of veterinary drugs simultaneously in an integrated chip-mass spectrometry (chip-MS) platform was developed. The developed microfluidic chip platform integrated three modules including the extraction and filtration module, "pass-through" clean-up module, and online evaporation module. The resulting chip has been coupled to a MS detector successfully, in which 23 kinds of residues in five classes were simultaneously qualitatively and quantitatively detected without chromatographic separation, obtaining the limits of detection of the spiked milk sample in the range of 0.23-4.13 ng/mL and the recovery rate in the range from 71.7 to 118.0% under optimized conditions. The microfluidic chip system developed in this study provided a new idea for the development of detection chips and exhibited considerable potential in the point-of-care testing in milk.

Abstract
A robust and sensitive isotope dilution UPLC-MS/MS method was established for the simultaneous analysis of acrylamide (AA), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]-pyridine (PhIP). A fairly good separation of three analytes was achieved within 4.5 min. High correlation coefficients (R2 > 0.9998) of the three compounds were obtained in their respective linear ranges. This method demonstrated low limits of detection (1.57 μg/L for AA, 0.61 μg/L for HMF, and 0.02 μg/L for PhIP) and limits of quantification (5.22 μg/L for AA, 2.03 μg/L for HMF, and 0.05 μg/L for PhIP). This method also demonstrated excellent quantification accuracy (99.02%-101.12%), precision (RSD < 6%), and recovery (82.83-119.92%) in the Maillard model systems and deep-fried meatballs. This work develops a fundamental method for the rapid simultaneous determination of AA, HMF, and PhIP in thermally processed foods that are both carbohydrates-rich and protein-rich, meanwhile providing technical support for the generation mechanism of various hazards.

Abstract
The presence of Alternaria toxins (ATs) in fruit purees may cause potential harm to the life and health of consumers. As time passes, ATs have become the key detection objects in this kind of food. Based on this, a novel and rapid method was established in this paper for the simultaneous detection of seven ATS (tenuazonic acid, alternariol, alternariol monomethyl ether, altenuene, tentoxin, altenusin, and altertoxin I) in mixed fruit purees using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The sample was prepared using the modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) method to complete the extraction and clean-up steps in one procedure. In this QuEChERS method, sample was extracted with water and acetonitrile (1.5% formic acid), then salted out with NaCl, separated on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 with gradient elution by using acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid aqueous as eluent, and detected by UPLC-MS/MS under positive (ESI+) and negative (ESI−) electrospray ionization and MRM models. Results showed that the seven ATs exhibited a good linearity in the concentration range of 0.5–200 ng/mL with R2 > 0.9925, and the limits of detection (LODs) of the instrument were in the range of 0.18–0.53 μg/kg. The average recoveries ranged from 79.5% to 106.7%, with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) no more than 9.78% at spiked levels of 5, 10, and 20 μg/kg for seven ATs. The established method was applied to the determination and analysis of the seven ATs in 80 mixed fruit puree samples. The results showed that ATs were detected in 31 of the 80 samples, and the content of ATs ranged from 1.32 μg/kg to 54.89 μg/kg. Moreover, the content of TeA was the highest in the detected samples (23.32–54.89 μg/kg), while the detection rate of Ten (24/31 samples) was higher than the other ATs. Furthermore, the other five ATs had similar and lower levels of contamination. The method established in this paper is accurate, rapid, simple, sensitive, repeatable, and stable, and can be used for the practical determination of seven ATs in fruit puree or other similar samples. Moreover, this method could provide theory foundation for the establishment of limit standard of ATs and provide a reference for the development of similar detection standard methods in the future.

Abstract
A specialized method for ochratoxin A (OTA) determination on fermented teas was developed and validated using ultraperformance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Methodology results showed that recovery, relative standard deviation, accuracy, and precision were qualified. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.32 and 0.96 μg/kg, respectively. Two of 158 collected samples were screened for OTA contamination. Comprehensive risk assessment based on OTA contaminations of this study and other peer-reviewed publications was performed. The highest hazard quotient (HQ) value (8.86 × 10-2) and the highest 1/MoE value (8.61 × 10-5) in probabilistic assessment were equally below the recommended non-neoplastic and neoplastic thresholds, indicating no health risks. However, the HQ and 1/MoE values of the 95th percentiles in 20-39 and ≥50 years of age were close to thresholds of 1.0 and 1.0 × 10-4, respectively. Under the extreme case, there were only a few scenarios (e.g., 40-49 years of age) of HQ values below the non-neoplastic threshold, but the 1/MoE value of each group exceeded the neoplastic threshold. This is the first extensive risk assessment on OTA from fermented teas worldwide, but the sample size is still limited, and a large number of samples is encouraged in a future study for a more accurate assessment.

Abstract
The forensic and medical fields are seeing growing interest in the amino acid and damage biomarker composition of hair, in order to identify adulteration of drug hair testing and for diagnostic purposes. Therefore, there is an increased demand for quick and accurate analytical methods. This study presents the first liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assay for the simultaneous quantification of hair amino acids and four damage biomarkers, which also implements an isotopic dilution strategy to improve recovery and precision of the acid hydrolysis-sensitive analytes. The applied strategy enabled a recovery of the hydrolysis-sensitive amino acids between 83 and 120% (vs. 33-77%, without isotopic dilution) for two different protein standards, and a precision with a relative standard deviation (RSD) between 1.3 and 7.5% (vs. 9.0-29.4%, without isotopic dilution). All 21 analytes could be measured without interferences by matrix and sample components, thus demonstrating satisfactory selectivity of the method. For spiked samples of hair hydrolyzate, recovery was between 88 and 120%, whereas precision and intermediate precision were below 10.1%. The high sensitivity of the method made it possible to reduce sample preparation to a 10000-fold dilution of the raw hydrolyzate. The wide linear range displayed by the method allowed the simultaneous quantification of minor (0.3 μmol/g of hair) and major (up to 1000 μmol/g of hair) components of the biological fiber. This method was successfully applied to the analysis of real hair samples submitted to six different treatments. Statistical data analysis by means of t-test and principal component analysis (PCA) showed a clear discrimination of the treated from the untreated hair samples and of the different treatments. Since these hair treatments can interfere with hair drug testing, the method possesses the ability of identifying hair samples with potential for attempted drug test evasion. In addition, lanthionine emerged as a new biomarker for heat damaged hair.

Abstract
The natural mycotoxin tenuazonic acid (TeA) in foods is identified as the most toxic mycotoxin among the over 70 kinds of secondary toxic metabolites produced by Alternaria alternata. Some hapten-antibody-mediated immunoassays have been developed for TeA detection in food samples, but these methods show unsatisfactory sensitivity and specificity. In this study, a rationally designed hapten for TeA mycotoxin generated with computer-assisted modeling was prepared to produce a highly specific camel polyclonal antibody, and an indirect competitive chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay (icCLEIA) was established with a limit of detection of 0.2 ng mL-1 under optimized conditions. The cross-reactivity results showed that several analogs and some common mycotoxins had negligible recognition by the anti-TeA polyclonal antibody. The average recoveries spiked in fruit juices were determined to be 92.7% with an acceptable coefficient of variation, and good correlations between icCLEIA and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) results were obtained in spiked samples. This developed icCLEIA for TeA detection with significantly improved sensitivity and satisfactory specificity is a promising alternative for environmental monitoring and food safety.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 is the potential chemical contaminant of most concern during the production and storage of fermented tea. In this work, a simple, fast, sensitive, accurate, and inexpensive method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous detection of four aflatoxins in fermented tea based on a modified sample pretreatment method and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Aflatoxins were extracted using acetonitrile and purified using mixed fillers (carboxyl multiwalled carbon nanotubes, hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, silica gel). Under optimum LC-MS conditions, the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.02-0.5 µg·kg-1. Recoveries from aflatoxins-fortified tea samples (1-12 µg·kg-1) were in the range of 78.94-105.23% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 18.20%. The proposed method was applied successfully to determine aflatoxin levels in fermented tea samples.

Abstract
AbstractFusarium basal rot (FBR) of onion is a serious disease problem worldwide. The Fusarium species causing FBR can also produce mycotoxins that are potentially harmful to humans and animals. In this study, a multiple reaction monitoring technique with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (MRM UHPLC-MS/MS) was developed and validated for onion matrix to study Fusarium mycotoxins in the harvested onions. This study was focused on fumonisins B1, B2, and B3 (FB1, FB2, and FB3), beauvericin (BEA), and moniliformin (MON), which are the main mycotoxins produced by Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium proliferatum. In the in-house validated protocol, the onion samples were extracted with methanol:water (3:1) using magnetic stirring for 15 min. FBs and BEA were determined directly from the filtered extracts, whereas MON required sample concentration prior to analysis. No cleanup of extracts was needed prior to analysis. The target mycotoxins were separated on an Acquity UPLC system BEH C18 column with gradient elution. Mycotoxins were identified and quantified using 13C-FB1 as internal standard. Minor matrix effect was compensated using multi-point matrix-matched calibration curves with uninfected onion sample. For the mycotoxins studied, a good linearity was obtained (R2 ≥ 0.99) and the recoveries were in the range of 67–122%, with the highest standard deviation for MON, 22%. The limits of quantification were from 2.5 to 10 ng g−1 in onion matrix. The method was successfully employed for the analysis of mycotoxins in harvested onions showing FBR symptoms and found to be infected with F. oxysporum and F. proliferatum.

Abstract
Alternaria toxins are emerging mycotoxins whose regulation and standardization are in progress by the European Commission and the European Committee for Standardization. This paper describes a dilute and shoot approach to determine five Alternaria toxins in selected food samples using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The strategy involves sample extraction with acidified aqueous methanol, followed by a solvent change accomplished via sample evaporation and reconstitution. The quantification is based on isotope dilution, applying all corresponding isotopically labeled internal standards to compensate possible matrix effects of the analysis. The main advantages of the present method over other existing methods includes simple and effective sample preparation, as well as detection with high sensitivity. The five-fold sample dilution can decrease matrix effects, which were evaluated with both external and internal standard methods. The results demonstrated a limit of quantification lower than 1.0 µg/kg for all five analytes for the first time. The newly presented method showed acceptable accuracy (52.7-111%) when analyzing naturally contaminated and spiked standard samples at the described levels. The method was validated for tomato-based and flour samples (wheat, rye, and maize). The absolute recovery ranged from 66.7% to 91.6% (RSD < 10%). The developed method could be an alternative approach for those laboratories that exclude sample cleanup and pre-concentration of state-of-the-art instruments with enhanced sensitivity.

Abstract
The presence of pesticide residues in apples raises serious health concerns. In this study, a novel, sensitive, high-performance method was developed to simultaneously analyze the residues of 14 pesticides in apples using modified QuEChERS sample pretreatment coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The optimized purification procedure demonstrated satisfactory recovery and precision for all the tested pesticides. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) values of 14 pesticides in the apple matrix ranged from 0.03 μg/kg to 0.3 μg/kg and 0.1 μg/kg to 1.0 μg/kg, respectively. The proposed method detected six pesticides in the apple samples collected from 20 counties in China's major apple-producing regions. Furthermore, the risk quotient (RQ, %) of the detected pesticides was evaluated by the national estimated acceptable daily intake. The RQs of six pesticides in Chinese people of different age groups were less than 100%.

Abstract
Herein, an electrospun polyacrylonitrile/nickel-based metal-organic framework nanocomposite (PAN/Ni-MOF) coating on a stainless steel wire was synthesized and employed as a novel nanosorbent for headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), diazinon (DIZ), and chlorpyrifos (CPS) from the diverse aqueous media followed by corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry (CD-IMS). Under the optimum experimental conditions, the calibration plots were linear in the range of 1.0-250.0 ng mL-1 for DIZ and 0.5-300.0 ng mL-1 for CPS with r2 > 0.999. The detection limits (S/N = 3) were 0.3 and 0.2 ng mL-1 for DIZ and CPS, respectively. The intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs%) (n = 5) at the concentration levels of 20.0, 40.0, and 100.0 ng mL-1 were ≤ 5.2%. To investigate the extraction efficiency, PAN/Ni-MOF was employed to analyze various juice samples, including orange, apple, and grape juices, and in three water samples where it led to good recoveries ranged between 87% and 98%.

Abstract
Polyethyleneimine-modified magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes were developed to extract 10 mycotoxins. Simple modification of polyethyleneimine was achieved on the magnetic substrate by using an epoxy-containing silane agent as a linker. The resultant magnetic adsorbent was integrated with reverse phase and anion exchange interaction sites. Under optimal extraction conditions, only 20.0 mg adsorbent was used to extract the mycotoxins from 50.0 mL loading solution. The maximum adsorption capacities of the adsorbent toward the mycotoxins ranged from 4.9 to 10.2 mg/g. Adsorption and desorption were completed within 3.0 and 2.0 min, respectively. The adsorbent could be used for six repeated runs without evident change in extraction performance. The adsorbent combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was applied further to analyze the mycotoxins in milk. The absolute recoveries of the 10 mycotoxins ranged from 88.3 to 103.5% with relative standard deviations that ranged from 2.4 to 6.5%, and their limits of detection were 0.003 to 0.442 μg/kg. The proposed adsorbent has great potential in the routine analysis of mycotoxins in ordinary analytical chemistry laboratory.

Abstract
The development of a multi-mycotoxins method using LC-MS/MS is necessary and it is clear that the development of such method involves many compromises in the choice of the different parameters. This review summarizes applications using conventional experimental designs and some recent studies using response surface methodology (RSM) as a mathematical modeling tool for the optimization of extraction procedures. The authors also discuss pros and cons of the different procedures. To our knowledge, it is the first review on experimental design for the development of multi-mycotoxin methods. This review could be useful in the development and optimization of LC-MS/MS methods with the aim of describing experimental design and variables (factors) that are likely to affect sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are fungal metabolites that occur in human foods and animal feeds, potentially threatening human and animal health. The intestine is considered as the first barrier against these external contaminants, and it consists of interconnected physical, chemical, immunological, and microbial barriers. In this context, based on in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models, we summarize the literature for compromised intestinal barrier issues caused by various mycotoxins, and we reviewed events related to disrupted intestinal integrity (physical barrier), thinned mucus layer (chemical barrier), imbalanced inflammatory factors (immunological barrier), and dysfunctional bacterial homeostasis (microbial barrier). We also provide important information on deoxynivalenol, a leading mycotoxin implicated in intestinal dysfunction, and other adverse intestinal effects induced by other mycotoxins, including aflatoxins and ochratoxin A. In addition, intestinal perturbations caused by mycotoxins may also contribute to the development of mycotoxicosis, including human chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases. Therefore, we provide a clear understanding of compromised intestinal barrier induced by mycotoxins, with a view to potentially develop innovative strategies to prevent and treat mycotoxicosis. Abstract
The humankind is pretty dependent on food to control several biological processes into the organism. As the world population increases, the demand for foodstuffs follows the same trend claiming for a high food production situation. For this reason, a substantial amount of chemicals is used in agriculture and livestock husbandries every year, enhancing the likelihood of contaminated foodstuffs being commercialized. This outlook becomes a public health concern; thus, the governmental regulatory agencies impose laws to control the residues and contaminants in food matrices. Currently, one of the most important analytical techniques to perform it is LC. Despite its already recognized effectiveness, it is often time consuming and requires significant volumes of reagents, which are transformed into toxic waste. In this context, miniaturized LC modes emerge as a greener and more effective analytical technique. They have remarkable advantages, including higher sensitivity, lower sample amount, solvent and stationary phase requirements, and more natural coupling to MS. In this review, most of the critical characteristics of them are discussed, focusing on the benchtop instruments and their related analytical columns. Additionally, a discussion regarding the last 10 years of publications reporting miniaturized LC application for the analysis of natural and industrial food samples is categorized. The main chemical classes as applied in the crops are highlighted, including pesticides, veterinary drugs, and mycotoxins.

Abstract
In order to alleviate toxic effects of aflatoxins B1 (AFB1) and zearalenone (ZEA) on broiler production performance and gut microbiota, three kinds of compound probiotics (CP) were selected. The optimal ratios of Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus casei and Candida utilis in broiler diets were 7, 5 and 6 log CFU/g for ZEA biodegradation (CP1); 6, 7 and 7 log CFU/g for AFB1 biodegradation (CP2); 7, 6 and 7 log CFU/g for ZEA + AFB1 biodegradation (CP3). A total of 350 1-day-old Ross broilers were randomly divided into 7 groups. Group A was the basal diet, group B-G contained ZEA, AFB1, ZEA + AFB1, ZEA + CP1, AFB1+CP2, ZEA + AFB1+CP3, respectively. The experiment showed that AFB1 or AFB1+ZEA significantly decreased broiler production performance, damaged liver and jejunum, increased mycotoxin residues in broiler body; however, three kinds of compound probiotics additions could alleviate mycotoxin negative effects on the above parameters (p < 0.05). The gut microbiota analysis indicated that AFB1+ZEA increased jejunal microbial richness, but which were decreased to almost the same level as the control group by CP3 addition. CP3 addition significantly increased jejunal Firmicutes and Lactobacillus aviarius abundances. The correlative analysis showed that gut Lactobacillus aviarius abundance was positively correlated with average daily gain (ADG) of broilers (p < 0.05), while AFB1+ZEA addition decreased its relative abundance, indicating that CP3 addition increased broiler growth by increasing Lactobacillus aviarius abundance. AFB1 and ZEA residues in broiler body were negatively correlated with the gut beneficial bacterial abundances (p < 0.01), but positively correlated with the potentially harmful bacterial abundances (p < 0.05), which inferred that CP3 addition could decrease mycotoxin residues through positively regulating gut relative bacterial abundances. In conclusion, compound probiotics could keep gut microbiota stable, degrade mycotoxins, alleviate histological lesions, increase production performance and reduce mycotoxin toxicity for broilers.

Abstract
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a class of mycotoxin that are mainly produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium and widely found in plant origin food. OTA-contaminated foods can cause serious harm to animals and humans, while high stability of OTA makes it difficult to remove in conventional food processing. Thus, sensitive and rapid detection of OTA undoubtedly plays an important role in OTA prevention and control. In this paper, the conventional and novel methods of OTA at home and abroad are summarized and compared. The latest research progress and related applications of novel OTA electrochemical biosensors are mainly described with a new perspective. We innovatively divided the recognition element into single and combined recognition elements. Specifically, signal amplification technologies applied to the OTA electrochemical aptasensor are proposed. Furthermore, summary of the current limitations and future challenges in OTA analysis is included, which provide reference for the further research and applications.

Abstract
Here, a reliable and sensitive method for the determination of 38 (modified) mycotoxins was developed. Using a QuEChERS-based extraction method [acetonitrile/water/formic acid (75:20:5, v/v/v)], followed by two runs of high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry with different conditions, relevant mycotoxins in cereals were analyzed. The method was validated according to the performance criteria defined by the European Commission (EC) in Commission Decision no. 657/2002. Limits of quantification ranged from 0.05 to 150 μg/kg. Good linearity (R2 > 0.99), recovery (61-120%), repeatability (RSDr < 15%), and reproducibility (RSDR < 20%) were obtained for most mycotoxins. However, validation results for Alternaria toxins and fumonisins were unsatisfying. Matrix effects (-69 to +59%) were compensated for using standard addition. Application on reference materials gave correct results while analysis of samples from local retailers revealed contamination, especially with deoxynivalenol, deoxynivalenol-3-glucoside, fumonisins, and zearalenone, in concentrations up to 369, 58, 1002, and 21 μg/kg, respectively.

Abstract
Alternaria toxins have gained attention as a potential health risk and can be classified as emerging mycotoxins. As a result, they are candidates to be regulated by the European Commission. This paper describes a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) method for analyzing five Alternaria toxins in sunflower oil, which is a rather different type of sample to those matrices investigated in earlier published papers. An optimal sample preparation condition was achieved when samples were dissolved in n-hexane and extracted with methanol/water mixture, followed by sample pre-concentration with solvent evaporation. This study is the first focusing only on this lipophilic matrix and in using all corresponding isotopically labeled internal standards (ISTD) to compensate the matrix effect that strongly influences the LC-MS/MS analysis of toxins. Target compounds were separated on Zorbax Extend C-18 column enabling the analysis at alkaline pH of 8.8 that was necessary to obtain appropriate peak shape of tenuazonic acid and to separate the analytes at baseline. The method was validated according to the EU 2002/657/EC Decision and all the analytical performance characteristics met the requirements. The recovery was between 74% and 122% in fortified sunflower oil samples and the precision varied from 9% to 22%. The method was successfully demonstrated for sunflower seed quality check (QC) samples. Finally, 16 different sunflower oil samples were measured; and tenuazonic acid and tentoxin toxins were detected at levels close to LOQ concentrations.

Abstract
A β-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetic zinc-metal organic framework (M-MOF/β-CD) was synthesized via a facile one-pot reaction. M-MOF/β-CD was used as a magnetic porous absorbent for the extraction and determination of prochloraz and three triazole fungicides in vegetable samples. M-MOF/β-CD was prepared by creating MOF layers on the surface of a Fe3O4-graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite and bonding them with β-CD molecules. Characterization suggested that a 3D porous structure was formed, with M-MOF/β-CD exhibiting high superparamagnetism and a large surface area. As a new strategy, integrating MOFs with Fe3O4-GO could improve their water-resistance and mechanical strength by providing a rigid nanosupport interface. Combining M-MOF and β-CD resulted in excellent selective adsorption capacities for prochloraz and three triazole fungicides. The static adsorption process was evaluated and the results were in good agreement with the Freundlich model. Subsequently, M-MOF/β-CD was applied to extracting prochloraz and triazole fungicides from tomato and lettuce vegetables, followed by HPLC-MS/MS determination. The limits of detection for the above fungicides were found to be 0.25-1.0 μg/L at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, with spiked recoveries of 74.13%-119.83%, indicating that M-MOF/β-CD was promising for application to the extraction and determination of fungicides in complex matrices.

Abstract
Doenjang, a Korean fermented soybean paste, is vulnerable to contamination by mycotoxins because it is directly exposed to environmental microbiota during fermentation. A method that simultaneously determines 20 mycotoxins in doenjang, including aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEN), and fumonisins (FBs) with an immunoaffinity column cleanup was optimized and validated in doenjang using LC-MS/MS. The method showed good performance in the analysis of 20 mycotoxins in doenjang with good linearity (R2 > 0.999), intra- and inter-day precision (<16%), recovery (72-112%), matrix effect (87-104%), and measurement uncertainty (<42%). The validated method was applied to investigate mycotoxin contamination levels in commercial and homemade doenjang. The mycotoxins that frequently contaminated doenjang were AFs, OTA, ZEN, and FBs and the average contamination level and number of co-occurring mycotoxins in homemade doenjang were higher than those in commercially produced doenjang.

BACKGROUND Short-chain volatile amines (SCVA) are an interesting compound class playing crucial roles in physiological and toxicological human settings. Dimethylamine (DMA), trimethylamine (TMA), diethylamine (DEA), and triethylamine (TEA) were investigated in detail. METHODS Headspace gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) was used for the simultaneous qualitative and quantitative determination of four SCVA in different human body fluids. Four hundred microliters of Li-heparin plasma and urine were analyzed after liberation of volatile amines under heated conditions in an aqueous alkaline and saline environment. Target analytes were separated on a volatile amine column and detected on a Thermo DSQ II mass spectrometer scheduled in single ion monitoring mode. RESULTS Chromatographic separation of selected SCVA was done within 7.5 minutes. The method was developed and validated with respect to accuracy, precision, recovery and stability. Accuracy and precision criteria were below 12% for all target analytes at low and high levels. The selected extraction procedure provided recoveries of more than 92% from both matrices for TMA, DEA and TEA. The recovery of DMA from Li-heparin plasma was lower but still in the acceptable range (>75%). The newly validated method was successfully applied to plasma and urine samples from healthy volunteers. Detected concentrations of endogenous metabolites DMA and TMA are comparable to already known reference ranges. CONCLUSION Herein, we describe the successful development and validation of a reliable and broadly applicable HS-GC-MS procedure for the simultaneous and quantitative determination of SCVA in human plasma and urine without relying on derivatization chemistry.

Abstract
The present paper deals with the multivariate optimization of an extraction-purification strategy for the determination of phytoestrogens (daidzein, genistein, coumestrol, formononetin, and biochanin A) in soy-based meat substitutes by high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. For a reliable quantitation of these new concerning compounds in such a complex matrix, recovery and matrix effect must be carefully evaluated. Therefore, two sequential experimental designs were used to optimize the sample-pretreatment of soy-based burgers: the chosen technique was the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe methodology, which does not require any particular facility or instrumentation. Thanks to the first screening design (Plackett-Burman), the significant factors influencing the studied responses were identified and further investigated through a response surface design (Box-Behnken). The optimal values of the variables (volume of extraction solvent mix/sample mass ratio and two clean-up sorbents) led to quantitative recoveries (97-104%) and low ion suppression (matrix effect 60-93%) for all analytes. This optimized method was characterized by low detection limits (0.2-1.5 ng/g) and excellent intraday precision (RSD 2-4%). It was applied to the determination of the considered compounds in several soy-burgers from the Italian market, detecting low ng/g levels (up to 40 ng/g) of coumestrol, formononetin, and biochanin A, and high concentrations (7.9-78 µg/g) of genistein and daidzein.

Abstract
Effective management of mycotoxins rely on stringent regulation and routine surveillance of food/feed commodities via efficient analysis, hence the continuous need for improved methods. The present study developed, optimized and validated a modified pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) method for the simultaneous extraction of multi-mycotoxins from maize and subsequent quantification on LC-MS/MS. The PHWE system was modified using ethanol (EtOH) as a cosolvent, while a numerical modelling approach, the central composite design (CCD), was adopted for the optimization of the extraction conditions. Using the optimized method, it was possible to effectively extract and quantify 15 different mycotoxins from maize in a single step with satisfactory linearities (0.986-0.999), recoveries (14-124%) and other associated method validation parameters. Further efficacious application of the method to real samples re-affirmed the prospects of PHWE as a suitable, cost-effective and greener alternative to traditional methods of mycotoxin extraction.

Abstract
Gut microbiota play an important role in metabolism of intake saponins, and parallelly, the polysaccharides deriving from herbal products possess effects on gut microbiota. Ophiopogonis Radix is a common Chinese herb that is popularly used as functional food in China. Polysaccharide and steroidal saponin, e.g., ophiopogonin, mainly ophiopogonin D (Oph-D) and ophiopogonin D' (Oph-D'), are the major constituents in this herb. In order to reveal the role of gut microbiota in metabolizing ophiopogonin, an in vitro metabolism of Oph-D and Oph-D' by human gut microbiota, in combination with or without Ophiopogon polysaccharide, was conducted. A sensitive and reliable UPLC-MS/MS method was developed to simultaneously quantify Oph-D, Oph-D' and their final metabolites, i.e., ruscogenin and diosgenin in the broth of microbiota. An elimination of Oph-D and Oph-D' was revealed in a time-dependent manner, as well as the recognition of a parallel increase of ruscogenin and diosgenin. Ophiopogon polysaccharide was shown to stimulate the gut microbiota-induced metabolism of ophiopogonins. This promoting effect was further verified by increased activities of β-D-glucosidase, β-D-xylosidase, α-L-rhamnosidase and β-D-fucosidase in the broth. This study can be extended to investigate the metabolism of steroidal saponins by gut microbiota when combined with other herbal products, especially those herbs enriched with polysaccharides.
