Abstract
Active and intelligent food packaging is an innovative technology to prevent food contamination and ensure food quality and safety. Active packaging protects the food from microbial contamination, while smart or intelligent packaging enables monitoring the freshness of the food or quality change in real-time. Curcumin, one of the most well-known natural colorants, has received a lot of attention for its excellent functional properties and ability to change color with changes in pH. Curcumin, the golden component of turmeric, a spice widely used in food since ancient times, is a cost-effective and abundant biomaterial with various biological properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory. Recently, active packaging or intelligent packaging systems have been actively developed using the functional properties of curcumin. In this review, we briefly reviewed curcumin's basic biological functions and discussed comprehensive and recent progress in using curcumin in various polymer-based active and smart food packaging applications.

Abstract
Hydrophobic cellulose laurate (CL) with high degree of substitution has been successfully synthesized. The mechanical property, water-resistance, antimicrobial activity, barrier properties and food decontamination of cellulose-laurate-curcumin films (CL-Cux, x = 0.1, 0.5, and 1) were investigated. The results showed that the mechanical properties of CL-Cux hardly change after soaking in water for 24 h, probably due to the strong hydrophobicity of cellulose laurate. CL-Cu1 represented a good photoinduced antibacterial effect against S. aureus. After irradiation of white light at 60 mW·cm-2 for 20 min, the inhibition efficiency reached to 95 ± 2.02%, probably owing to the generated active 1O2. In comparison with CL-Cu1 stored in natural light, the bacteriostatic effect of CL-Cu1 in dark storage was better, and the inhibition rate of CL-Cu1 remained 80 ± 1.22 at 60th day. The stabler excited state of curcumin in hydrophobic cellulose laurate was probably assigned to inhibition of tautomerism or conformational transition, which was beneficial to the generation of singlet oxygen. CL-Cu1 can significantly inhibit the growth of TVBN and TVC values of chilled meat upon white light irradiation, indicating the potential application of cellulose-laurate-curcumin films in food decontamination.

Abstract
A novel active food packaging film was developed by casting a corn starch/tea polyphenol (TP)-loaded porous starch (PS, obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis) film forming solution, with the latter helping to regulate the slow release of TP. Results showed that PS had a favorable TP adsorption capacity, and the casted films had a homogeneous distribution of the formulation components. Likewise, the active films had good mechanical properties, UV barrier properties, thermal stability, and excellent antioxidant properties. The slow release of TP from the films was sustained, which is a desired characteristic for extending the protection afforded by the active film to the food under consideration.

Abstract
Polymeric nanocomposites have received significant attention in both scientific and industrial research in recent years. The demand for new methods of food preservation to ensure high-quality, healthy foods with an extended shelf life has increased. Packaging, a crucial feature of the food industry, plays a vital role in satisfying this demand. Polymeric nanocomposites exhibit remarkably improved packaging properties, including barrier properties, oxygen impermeability, solvent resistance, moisture permeability, thermal stability, and antimicrobial characteristics. Bio-based polymers have drawn considerable interest to mitigate the influence and application of petroleum-derived polymeric materials and related environmental concerns. The integration of nanotechnology in food packaging systems has shown promise for enhancing the quality and shelf life of food. This article provides a general overview of bio-based polymeric nanocomposites comprising polymer matrices and inorganic nanoparticles, and describes their classification, fabrication, properties, and applications for active food packaging systems with future perspectives.

Abstract
The methods to obtain cellulose-chitosan composite films exhibiting excellent water-resisting and antibacterial abilities have been widely explored. Cellulose-chitosan-citric films (C-Chx-F) were successfully obtained by a facile coating of chitosan-citric complex on the surface of cellulose. The occurrence of nonenzymatic browning at 80 °C improved the thermal stability, water-resistance, mechanical property and oxygen-barrier ability of C-Chx-F membranes. C-Ch3-F hydrogel showed excellent breaking stress of 6.03 ± 0.25 MPa, and elastic module of 27.09 ± 1.21 MPa, probably assigned to nonenzymatic browning. Under different test temperatures, the nonenzymatic browning and the content of chitosan-citric complex will significantly improve the oxygen barrier property of membranes (P < 0.05), and C-Ch3-F membrane represented the value of oxygen permeation below the detection level. Excellent antibacterial capability of C-Chx-F hydrogels demonstrated that polycationic chitosan-citric complex immobilized in films still retained excellent antibacterial ability. The excellent decontamination in meat preservation endowed C-Chx-F films with potential application in food packaging.

Abstract
In this study, silica (SiO2) and β-acids were added to the chitosan films in order to improve the film's properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were used to explore the structure of film. The results of mechanical test indicated that the film containing SiO2 (0.3%) and β-acids (0.3%) could obtain a significant tensile strength (10.04 MPa). The complex films possessed a good inhibitory effect on three types of bacteria, and good antioxidant activity (>56%, DPPH). The release mechanism of β-acids from the films exhibited Fickian diffusion (n < 0.45). During the storage of soybean oil, the films could well control the changes of the peroxide value, acid value and thiobarbituric acid reactant content. Overall, the biofilms not only possess good physical and chemical properties, but also prolongs the time of food storage.

Abstract
Chitosan is a biopolymer that is natural, biodegradable, and relatively low price. Chitosan has been attracting interest as a matrix of nanocomposites due to new properties for various applications. This study presents a comprehensive overview of common and recent advances using chitosan as a nanocomposite matrix. The focus is to present alternative processes to produce embedded or coated nanoparticles, and the shaping techniques that have been employed (3D printing, electrospinning), as well as the nanocomposites emerging applications in medicine, tissue engineering, wastewater treatment, corrosion inhibition, among others. There are several reviews about single chitosan material and derivatives for diverse applications. However, there is not a study that focuses on chitosan as a nanocomposite matrix, explaining the possibility of nanomaterial additions, the interaction of the attached species, and the applications possibility following the techniques to combine chitosan with nanostructures. Finally, future directions are presented for expanding the applications of chitosan nanocomposites.

Abstract
In order to enforce the mechanical strength and antibacterial ability of biofilm and explore the underlying mechanism, sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and ε-polylysine (ε-PL) were introduced to fabricate the composite film of konjac glucomannan (KGM)/SL/ε-PL in the present study. According to our previous method, 1% (w/v) of KGM was the optimal concentration for the film preparation method, on the basis of which the amount of SL and ε-PL were screened by mechanical properties enforcement of film. The structure, mechanical performance and thermal stability of the film were characterized by SEM, FTIR, TGA and tensile strength tests. The optimized composite film was comprised of KGM 1% (w/v), SL 0.2% (w/v), and ε-PL 0.375% (w/v). The tensile strength (105.97 ± 4.58 MPa, p < 0.05) and elongation at break (95.71 ± 5.02%, p < 0.05) of the KGM/SL/ε-PL composite film was greatly improved compared with that of KGM. Meanwhile, the thermal stability and antibacterial property of film were also enhanced by the presence of SL and ε-PL. In co-culturation mode, the KGM/SL/ε-PL composite film showed good inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli (22.50 ± 0.31 mm, p < 0.05) and Staphylococcus aureus (19.69 ± 0.36 mm, p < 0.05) by determining the inhibition zone diameter. It was revealed that KGM/SL/ε-PL composite film shows enhanced mechanical strength and reliable antibacterial activities and it could be a potential candidate in the field of food packaging.

Abstract
The exploration of novel functional packaging films is of great scientific and technological interest. Herein, a novel chitosan/hollow g-C3N4/curcumin (CS-HCNS-Cur) biocomposite films was successful fabricated with integrated functions of slow release, antimicrobial activity and food freshness preservation. CS-HCNS-Cur films take the advantages of the excellent thermal stability and slow-release ability of HCNS to curcumin. Among the characterizations including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, atomic force microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanical properties and the rheological properties measurements confirmed the successful fabrication of CS-HCNS-Cur films. The averaged water contact angle and water vapor permeability of this film were 105.83° and 105.03 × 10-5 g·mm (m2·h·kPa)-1, respectively. This film showed pH-responsive and slow-release ability. Moreover, this film can effectively store bananas for 10 days. Therefore, CS-HCNS-Cur films have promising potential for applications in functional food packaging.

Abstract
Curcumin (CUR) is a natural substance extracted from turmeric that has antimicrobial properties. Due to its ability to absorb light in the blue spectrum, CUR is also used as a photosensitizer (PS) in antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT). However, CUR is hydrophobic, unstable in solutions, and has low bioavailability, which hinders its clinical use. To circumvent these drawbacks, drug delivery systems (DDSs) have been used. In this review, we summarize the DDSs used to carry CUR and their antimicrobial effect against viruses, bacteria, and fungi, including drug-resistant strains and emergent pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2. The reviewed DDSs include colloidal (micelles, liposomes, nanoemulsions, cyclodextrins, chitosan, and other polymeric nanoparticles), metallic, and mesoporous particles, as well as graphene, quantum dots, and hybrid nanosystems such as films and hydrogels. Free (non-encapsulated) CUR and CUR loaded in DDSs have a broad-spectrum antimicrobial action when used alone or as a PS in aPDT. They also show low cytotoxicity, in vivo biocompatibility, and improved wound healing. Although there are several in vitro and some in vivo investigations describing the nanotechnological aspects and the potential antimicrobial application of CUR-loaded DDSs, clinical trials are not reported and further studies should translate this evidence to the clinical scenarios of infections.

Abstract
Plants constitute a rich source of diverse classes of valuable phytochemicals (e.g., phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, alkaloids) with proven biological activity (e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, etc.). However, factors such as low stability, poor solubility and bioavailability limit their food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications. In this regard, a wide range of delivery systems have been developed to increase the stability of plant-derived bioactive compounds upon processing, storage or under gastrointestinal digestion conditions, to enhance their solubility, to mask undesirable flavors as well as to efficiently deliver them to the target tissues where they can exert their biological activity and promote human health. In the present review, the latest advances regarding the design of innovative delivery systems for pure plant bioactive compounds, extracts or essential oils, in order to overcome the above-mentioned challenges, are presented. Moreover, a broad spectrum of applications along with future trends are critically discussed.

Abstract
Construction of nanoscale delivery systems from natural food biopolymer complexes have attracted increasing interests in the fields of food industries. In this study, novel carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan/ chitosan (CMKGM/CS) nanogels with and without 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) /N-hydroxysuccinimide) (EDC/NHS)-initiated crosslinking were prepared. The physicochemical and structural properties of the CMKGM/CS nanogels and their potential to be a delivery vehicle for curcumin were investigated. Compared to original uncrosslinked nanogels, crosslinking did not alter particle size and morphology but decreased zeta potential of nanogels. Fourier transform infrared spectrum confirmed that the amide linkage was formed between CMKGM and CS, which obviously enhanced the stability of crosslinked nanogels under gastrointestinal conditions. Furthermore, the crosslinked nanogels not only had higher encapsulation efficiency of curcumin but also better sustained release behavior under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. These findings suggested that the crosslinked CMKGM/CS nanogels might be a promising delivery system for nutrients.

Abstract
Recently, the improvement of gelatin-based films for usage in food packaging has attracted more attention owing to their non-toxicity, biodegradability, availability, and renewability. In the current study, the improved gelatin-based films were produced using covalent interaction through dialdehyde kappa-carrageenan (DAK-car) and thymol-loaded zein nanoparticle content. The influences of DAK-car into the matrix of gelatin films (GEL) on the structural, total soluble matter (TSM), moisture content (MC), and water vapor permeability (WVP), and mechanical properties were investigated. After the formation of covalent crosslinking amongst the amino groups of GEL and the dialdehyde groups of DAK-car with the blending ratio of 1:2 (GEL 4% w/v): (DAK-car 1% w/v), a remarkably (p < 0.05) reduction was saw in TSM, MC, and WVP of film. The tensile strength of this film (72.26 ± 0.3 MPa) was ~20-fold higher compared with pure GEL film. It should also be noted that the presence of zein nanoparticles (ZNPs) did not have a notably effect on improving the attributes of gelatin-based film. However, the presence of thymol in concentrations of 0.25 and 0.5 mg/mL showed acceptable antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. As a result, GEL/DAK-car with blending ratio of 1:2 containing thymol-loaded ZNPs films demonstrated the valuable potential for application in active food packaging.

Abstract
Tea tree oil, a natural antibacterial compound, cannot be used effectively because of its volatile nature. In this work, a biocompatible carrier was prepared and loaded with tea tree essential oil. The carrier was prepared via the electrostatic or chemical action of aminated mesoporous silica and sodium rosin for achieving a low volatilization rate of tea tree essential oil. A synergistic antibacterial effect was observed between sodium rosin and tea tree essential oil. This method utilized the positive charge of the amino group and the condensation reaction with the carboxyl group to achieve physical and chemical interactions with sodium rosin. Fourier Transform Infrared, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller, Zeta potential, SEM, TEM, and TG were performed to characterize the structure and properties of the samples. Compared to the electrostatic effect, the chemically modified system exhibited a longer sustained release, and the sustained release curve followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas release model. Also, the antibacterial properties of the chemically modified system exhibited better minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) respectively, the MIC and MBC forE. coliwere 0.3 mg ml-1and 0.6 mg ml-1respectively, forS. aureuswere 0.15 mg ml-1and 0.3 mg ml-1respectively. More strikingly, the sample also demonstrated long-term antibacterial performance. Therefore, this work provides a new way for the delivery of volatile antibacterial drugs to achieve sustained-release and long-lasting antibacterial effects.

Abstract
In the present work, the effect of various concentrations of SiO2 nanoparticles (5, 10, and 15%) on physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS)-based film was investigated. Then, the migration of SiO2 nanoparticles to ethanol as a food simulant was evaluated. Subsequently, curcumin was added to the nanocomposite formulation to sense the pH changes. Finally, the cytotoxicity of the developed packaging system was investigated. With increasing nanoparticle concentration, the film thickness, water solubility, and water vapor permeability decreased and mechanical performance of the films improved. SSPS/SiO2 nanocomposite did not show antibacterial activity. SEM analysis showed that SiO2 nanoparticles are uniformly distributed in the SSPS matrix; however, some outstanding spots can be observed in the matrix. A very homogeneous surface was observed for neat SSPS film with R a and R q values of 3.48 and 4.26, respectively. With the incorporation of SiO2 (15%) into SSPS film, R a and R q values increased to 5.67 and 5.98, respectively. Small amount of SiO2 nanoparticles was released in food simulant. The nanocomposite incorporated with curcumin showed good physical properties and antibacterial activity. A strong positive correlation was observed between TVBN content of shrimp and a* values of the films during storage time (Pearson's correlation = 0.985).

Abstract
Chitosan, a low-cost and multipurpose polymer with numerous desired physicochemical and biological properties has been tested for various applications in agriculture, pharmacy, and biomedicine industries. The availability of functional groups along the backbone makes chitosan readily available for other polymers and metal ions to form bio-nanocomposites. Different types of chitosan-based nanocomposites have been designed and tested for the enhancement of chitosan efficiency and ultimately widening the application areas of chitosan in plants. These nanocomposites serve different purposes such as eliciting plant's defence systems against different threats (pathogen attack), antimicrobial agent against bacteria, fungi and viruses, enhancement of nutrient uptake by plants, control release of micro/macronutrients, fungicides and herbicides. In this review, an extensive outlook has been provided (mainly in the last five years) to recent trends and advances in the fabrication and application of chitosan-based composites. Finally, current challenges and future development opportunities of chitosan-based nanocomposites for plants are discussed.

Abstract
There is a strong drive in industry for packaging solutions that contribute to sustainable development by targeting a circular economy, which pivots around the recyclability of the packaging materials. The aim is to reduce traditional plastic consumption and achieve high recycling efficiency while maintaining the desired barrier and mechanical properties. In this domain, packaging materials in the form of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) can offer the desired functionalities and can be a potential replacement for complex multilayered polymer structures. There has been an increasing interest in nanocomposites for food packaging applications, with a five-fold rise in the number of published articles during the period 2010–2019. The barrier, mechanical, and thermal properties of the polymers can be significantly improved by incorporating low concentrations of nanofillers. Furthermore, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties can be introduced, which are very relevant for food packaging applications. In this review, we will present an overview of the nanocomposite materials for food packaging applications. We will briefly discuss different nanofillers, methods to incorporate them in the polymer matrix, and surface treatments, with a special focus on the barrier, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. On the practical side migration issues, consumer acceptability, recyclability, and toxicity aspects will also be discussed.

Abstract
Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and curcumin (Cu) were utilized for preparing new protecting PVAc-Cu x (x = 1, 5 and 10) coatings exerting antimicrobial photodynamic activity upon white light irradiation. Toward Salmonella typhimurium or Staphylococcus aureus, the killing efficiency represented the dependence on the Cu concentration and irradiation intensity. Toward S. aureus, the killing efficiency of PVAc-Cu 10 coating reached 93% at an energy density of 72 J/cm2. With the change in storage time of coating, the results implied significant stability of photosterilization efficiency within 60 days. Compared with the control experiment, lower total viable counts (TVCs) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values in fresh meat packaged by PVDC films with PVAc-Cu 10 coatings during storage at 4 °C demonstrated the practicability of the PVAc-Cu x coatings in decontaminating fresh pork. PVAc packed curcumin tightly within polymer chains, thus preventing tautomerization or, more probably, conformational transition, which is advantageous for improving photostability and emission lifetime.

Abstract
Fish-derived gelatin (FG), a raw material for edible films, has recently been spotlighted as an alternative source of mammalian gelatin. However, its low stability under moisture conditions and weak mechanical properties limit its application. In this study, a water-stable and mechanically robust FG film was prepared using alginate dialdehyde (ADA) as an eco-friendly crosslinking agent. The crosslinking process of FG with ADA was easily recognized by the change in the color of the FG/ADA composite film, and the browning index of the FG/ADA film could be correlated well with the actual crosslinking degree. The mechanical strength and Young's modulus of the FG/ADA composite film increased significantly with an increase in the content of the ADA crosslinker. In the case of FG/ADA10, the tensile strength and Young's modulus increased by 400 and 600 %, respectively, compared to those of FG. Remarkably, the FG-ADA crosslinking process greatly decreased the vulnerability of FG in moisture environments. Consequently, the FG/ADA10 film remained stable for 30 days under wet environment. In addition, the FG-ADA crosslinking process could enhance the antioxidative capacity of the FG/ADA edible film. According to this study, FG/ADA composite films fabricated in an effective manner using polymers derived from aquatic species like gelatin from fish and ADA from algae could have practical applications in the edible film-based packaging industry.

Abstract
Pulmonary drug delivery has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, it is still a major challenge to deliver poorly water-soluble drugs to lungs with good solubility and fine aerodynamic performance. In this study, curcumin was loaded into cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) for pulmonary delivery. Compared with micronized curcumin prepared by jet milling, curcumin-loaded CD-MOFs (Cur-CD-MOFs) exhibited excellent aerodynamic performance, which was attributed to the unique porous structure and lower density of CD-MOFs. The dissolution test showed that the drug release rate of Cur-CD-MOFs was much faster than that of micronized curcumin. The all-atom molecular dynamic simulation showed that curcumin molecules were loaded into the hydrophobic cavities of CD-MOFs or entered into the large hydrophilic cavities to form nanoclusters. The elevated wettability of Cur-CD-MOFs and the unique spatial distribution feature of curcumin in porous interior of CD-MOFs might be favorable for the improved dissolution rate. The DPPH radical scavenging test showed that Cur-CD-MOFs had prominent antioxidant activities. Therefore, CD-MOFs were expected to be promising carriers for pulmonary delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs.

Abstract
The mesoporous silica wall materials can achieve controlled load and sustained-release of active agents. An antimicrobial nanoscale silica microcapsule containing cinnamaldehyde (CA) was prepared by the sol-gel method and applied in poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) film. The surface morphology, physical and chemical properties, and antibacterial properties of microcapsules and films were studied. The effects of different temperatures and humidities on the release behavior of microcapsules were also evaluated. Results showed that CA was successfully encapsulated in silica microcapsule which had a diameter of 450–700 nm. The antibacterial CA agent had a long-lasting release time under lower temperature and relative humidity (RH) environment. At low temperature (4 °C), the microcapsules released CA 32.35% in the first 18 h, and then slowly released to 56.08% in 216 h; however, the microcapsules released more than 70% in 18 h at 40 °C. At low humidity (50%RH), the release rates of microcapsules at the 18th h and 9th d were 43.04% and 78.01%, respectively, while it reached to equilibrium state at 72 h under 90% RH. The sustained release process of CA in SiO2-CA microcapsules follows a first-order kinetic model. Physicochemical properties of PBAT films loaded with different amounts of microcapsules were also characterized. Results showed that the tensile strength and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the composite film containing 2.5% microcapsules were increased by 26.98% and 14.61%, respectively, compared to the raw film, while the light transmittance was slightly reduced. The crystallinity of the film was improved and can be kept stable up to 384.1 °C. Furthermore, microcapsules and composite film both exhibited distinctive antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. Therefore, SiO2-CA microcapsules and composite films could be a promising material for the active packaging.

Abstract
Biodegradable films poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) incorporated with nano-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS(epoxy)8) as a reactive compatibilizer were developed by melt processing. Structural, morphological, mechanical, and gas permeability properties of the films were determined. 1H NMR and GPC demonstrated that the POSS(epoxy)8 was chemically bound at the PBAT/PLA boundary phase via an epoxide ring opening reaction. SEM micrographs of impact fracture surfaces demonstrated the POSS(epoxy)8 improved interfacial adhesion between PBAT and PLA matrix. The mechanical properties of the PBAT/PLA films containing POSS(epoxy)8 were enhanced relative to pristine PBAT/PLA films. The water vapor, CO2 and O2 permeability of the PBAT/PLA films were improved by POSS(epoxy)8 addition. PBAT/PLA films containing POSS(epoxy)8 were shown to be superior to pristine PBAT/PLA films and polyethylene films in food storage tests. Results suggest that POSS(epoxy)8 addition during PBAT/PLA film production offers a simple strategy for the production of high performance biodegradable plastic packaging films.

Abstract
Background The growing use of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) in many fields raises human toxicity concerns. We studied the toxicity of SiNP-20 (particle diameter 20 nm) and SiNP-100 (100 nm) and the underlying mechanisms with a focus on the endothelium both in vitro and in vivo. Methods The study was conducted in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and adult female Balb/c mice using several techniques. Results In vitro, both SiNP-20 and SiNP-100 decreased the viability and damaged the plasma membrane of cultured HUVECs. The nanoparticles also inhibited HUVECs migration and tube formation in a concentration-dependent manner. Both SiNPs induced significant calcium mobilization and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), increased the phosphorylation of vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin at the site of tyrosine 731 residue (pY731-VEC), decreased the expression of VE-cadherin expression, disrupted the junctional VE-cadherin continuity and induced F-actin re-assembly in HUVECs. The injuries were reversed by blocking Ca2+ release activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channels with YM58483 or by eliminating ROS with N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). In vivo, both SiNP-20 and SiNP-100 (i.v.) induced multiple organ injuries of Balb/c mice in a dose (range 7–35 mg/kg), particle size, and exposure time (4–72 h)-dependent manner. Heart injuries included coronary endothelial damage, erythrocyte adhesion to coronary intima and coronary coagulation. Abdominal aorta injury exhibited intimal neoplasm formation. Lung injuries were smaller pulmonary vein coagulation, bronchiolar epithelial edema and lumen oozing and narrowing. Liver injuries included multifocal necrosis and smaller hepatic vein congestion and coagulation. Kidney injuries involved glomerular congestion and swelling. Macrophage infiltration occurred in all of the observed organ tissues after SiNPs exposure. SiNPs also decreased VE-cadherin expression and altered VE-cadherin spatial distribution in multiple organ tissues in vivo. The largest SiNP (SiNP-100) and longest exposure time exerted the greatest toxicity both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions SiNPs, administrated in vivo, induced multiple organ injuries, including endothelial damage, intravascular coagulation, and secondary inflammation. The injuries are likely caused by upstream Ca2+-ROS signaling and downstream VE-cadherin phosphorylation and destruction and F-actin remodeling. These changes led to endothelial barrier disruption and triggering of the contact coagulation pathway.

Abstract
Curcumin has been used in numerous anti-microbial research because of its low side effects and extensive traditional applications. Despite having a wide range of effects, the intrinsic physicochemical characteristics such as low bioavailability, poor water solubility, photodegradation, chemical instability, short half-life and fast metabolism of curcumin derivatives limit their pharmaceutical importance. To overcome these drawbacks and improve the therapeutic ability of curcuminoids, novel approaches have been attempted recently. Nanoparticulate drug delivery systems can increase the efficiency of curcumin in several diseases, especially infectious diseases. These innovative strategies include polymeric nanoparticles, hydrogels, nanoemulsion, nanocomposite, nanofibers, liposome, nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), polymeric micelles, quantum dots, polymeric blend films and nanomaterial-based combination of curcumin with other anti-bacterial agents. Integration of curcumin in these delivery systems has displayed to improve their solubility, bioavailability, transmembrane permeability, prolong plasma half-life, long-term stability, target-specific delivery and upgraded the therapeutic effects. In this review paper, a range of in vitro and in vivo studies have been critically discussed to explore the therapeutic viability and pharmaceutical significance of the nano-formulated delivery systems to elevate the anti-bacterial activities of curcumin and its derivatives.

Abstract
Antimicrobially active packaging has emerged as an effective technology to reduce microbial growth in food products increasing both their shelf-life and microbial safety for the consumer while maintaining their quality and sensorial properties. In the last years, a great effort has been made to develop more efficient, long-lasting and eco-friendly antimicrobial materials by improving the performance of the incorporated antimicrobial substances. With this purpose, more effective antimicrobial compounds of natural origin such as bacteriocins, bacteriophages and essential oils have been preferred over synthetic ones and new encapsulation strategies such as emulsions, core-shell nanofibres, cyclodextrins and liposomes among others, have been applied in order to protect these antimicrobials from degradation or volatilization while trying to enable a more controlled release and sustained antimicrobial action. On that account, this article provides an overview of the types of antimicrobials agents used and the most recent trends on the strategies used to encapsulate the antimicrobial agents for their stable inclusion in the packaging materials. Moreover, a thorough discussion regarding the benefits of each encapsulation technology as well as their application in food products is presented.

Abstract
The effects of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) (12, 24, and 36% w/w) on the microstructure and mechanical and thermal properties of canola protein isolate films were evaluated. The incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals led to homogeneous films, and new Fourier transform infrared peaks appeared at 1055 cm-1, indicating the presence and the interaction of CNCs with proteins and glycerol. The addition of CNCs also improved the thermal stability of the films, since higher temperatures were required for their thermal decomposition. In addition, CNC addition resulted in an increase in tensile strength and a decrease in elongation at break values due to strong interactions between the OH groups in proteins, glycerol, and CNCs.

Abstract
In this work, some multilayer coatings (two-layer, four-layer or six-layer) based on pullulan and chitosan for protecting papayas were prepared by the layer-by-layer technique. The papayas were coated by immersion and stored at 25 °C, 50% relative humidity or up to 14 days. Uncoated and monolayer-coated papayas were used as controls. The pullulan/chitosan coatings decreased the papaya weight loss, softening, color change (b*, ΔE), and pH, retarded the fall of titratable acidity and vitamin C, and maintained respiratory rate and soluble solid contents. Sensory quality evaluation demonstrated that pullulan/chitosan coatings effectively preserved papaya flavor and overall acceptance. In general, the four-layer coatings provided the best fruit preservation. In conclusion, multilayer pullulan/chitosan coatings are efficient in maintaining the post-harvest quality and prolonging the shelf life of fresh papaya.

Abstract
Pesticides and fertilizers are widely used to enhance agriculture yields, although the fraction of the pesticides applied in the field that reaches the targets is less than 0.1%. Such indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides is disadvantageous due to the cost implications and increasing human health and environmental concerns. In recent years, the utilization of nanotechnology to create novel formulations has shown great potential for diminishing the indiscriminate use of pesticides and providing environmentally safer alternatives. Smart nano-based pesticides are designed to efficiently delivery sufficient amounts of active ingredients in response to biotic and/or abiotic stressors that act as triggers, employing targeted and controlled release mechanisms. This review discusses the current status of stimuli-responsive release systems with potential to be used in agriculture, highlighting the challenges and drawbacks that need to be overcome in order to accelerate the global commercialization of smart nanopesticides.
