Abstract
Background Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with metabolic syndrome and its related outcomes, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. However, studies in Indian populations have provided conflicting results. Methods This single-center cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in north India to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with metabolic syndrome and to study the correlations of individual components of metabolic syndrome with 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels. The study included 235 patients aged between 30 to 70 years who met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. Patients with diabetes, hypothyroidism, Cushing's, and other disorders affecting vitamin D status, on supplements of vitamin D or anti-dyslipidaemic drugs were excluded. Information regarding socio-demographic characteristics, medical history, and anthropometric measurements were collected. Blood samples were collected to assess vitamin D levels. Results The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/ml) was 76% among the study population. There was a significant negative correlation between vitamin D levels and diastolic blood pressure (Spearman's rho: -0.134, 95% CI: -0.82,-0.260, p=0.040), fasting blood glucose (Spearman's rho: -0.142, 95% CI: -0.101,-0.269, p=0.029), A weak correlation was also found between vitamin D3 levels and total cholesterol (Spearman's rho: -0.246, 95% CI: -0.119,-0.367, p<0.001), triglyceride levels (Spearman's rho: -0.246, 95% CI: -0.118,-0.370, p<0.001) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (Spearman's rho: -0.229, 95% CI: -0.102,-0.351, p<0.001). Conclusion The study findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among patients with metabolic syndrome in north India. There is a significant negative correlation between vitamin D levels and some components of metabolic syndrome. This highlights the need for further research to understand the underlying mechanisms and potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation in this population. Identification of high-risk individuals for hypovitaminosis D can aid in streamlining treatment guidelines and preventing unnecessary prescription of investigations in developing countries.

Abstract
Ectopic fat deposition is more strongly associated with obesity-related health problems including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), hypothyroidism, arthritis, etc. Our study aimed at identifying the cumulative role of several risk factors in developing obesity and the role of ectopic fat (visceral fat) in predicting cardiovascular disease risk in varied age groups among urban adult academic professionals in West Bengal. 650 adults (Male = 456; Female = 194) associated with the academic job (age 20-65 years) in urban West Bengal were randomly selected for anthropometric, blood biochemical, and questionnaire-based analyses. Body Mass Index and Visceral Fat% exhibited comparable association with all the other anthropometric parameters (e.g. Whole body Subcutaneous fat%: male-Linear Regression Comparison: F = 11.68; P < 0.001; female-F = 6.11; P < 0.01). Therefore, VF% acts as a risk factor alongside BMI in instances where BMI fails alone. The presence of T2DM, hypertension, and hypothyroidism in the case groups confirmed their obesity-associated longitudinal pattern of inheritance. Unhealthy diet pattern indicates improper liver function, vitamin D deficiency, and increased erythrocytic inflammation. An overall sedentary lifestyle with parental history of obesity was found to be significant in the longitudinal transmission of the disease.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence supports the potential protective effects of vitamin D against chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, autoimmune diseases, cancers, cardiovascular disease (ischaemic heart disease and stroke), type 2 diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, stroke, and infectious diseases such as acute respiratory tract diseases, COVID-19, influenza, and pneumonia, as well as adverse pregnancy outcomes. The respective evidence is based on ecological and observational studies, randomized controlled trials, mechanistic studies, and Mendelian randomization studies. However, randomized controlled trials on vitamin D supplementation have largely failed to show benefits, probably due to poor design and analysis. In this work, we aim to use the best available evidence on the potential beneficial effects of vitamin D to estimate the expected reduction in incidence and mortality rates of vitamin D-related diseases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates if minimum serum 25(OH)D concentrations were to be raised to 30 ng/mL. Estimated reductions by 25% for myocardial infarction incidence, 35% for stroke incidence, 20 to 35% for cardiovascular disease mortality, and 35% for cancer mortality rates depicted a promising potential for raising serum 25(OH)D. Methods to increase serum 25(OH)D concentrations at the population level could include food fortification with vitamin D3, vitamin D supplementation, improved dietary vitamin D intake, and sensible sun exposure.

Abstract
To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies assessing the association between serum vitamin D status and mortality in patients with COVID- 19. We searched PubMed and Embase for studies addressing the association of serum vitamin D levels and COVID-19 mortality published until April 24, 2022. Risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence interval (CIs) were pooled using fixed or random effects models. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The meta-analysis included 21 studies that measured serum vitamin D levels close to the date of admission, of which 2 were case-control and 19 were cohort studies. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with COVID-19 mortality in the overall analysis but not when the analysis was adjusted to vitamin D cutoff levels < 10 or < 12 ng/mL (RR 1.60, 95% CI 0.93-2.27, I2 60.2%). Similarly, analyses including only studies that adjusted measures of effect for confounders showed no association between vitamin D status and death. However, when the analysis included studies without adjustments for confounding factors, the RR was 1.51 (95% CI 1.28-1.74, I2 0.0%), suggesting that confounders may have led to many observational studies incorrectly estimating the association between vitamin D status and mortality in patients with COVID-19. Deficient vitamin D levels were not associated with increased mortality rate in patients with COVID-19 when the analysis included studies with adjustments for confounders. Randomized clinical trials are needed to assess this association.

Abstract
Background: Tinnitus is a highly prevalent and frequently disabling condition, such that the identification of possible causal mechanisms would yield significant clinical and social benefits. Since vitamin D (Vit D) is involved in the pathogenesis of several ear disturbances, we review here the current scientific literature addressing the relationship between Vit D status and tinnitus. Methods: An electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science with the keywords “tinnitus” and “Vitamin D” or “Vit D” or “25OH-D” or “cholecalciferol” or “ergocalciferol” or “hydroxycholecalciferol”, without date (i.e., up to 8 February 2023) or language restrictions, in accordance with a protocol based on the transparent reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) 2020 checklist, for identifying studies which assayed serum Vit D concentration in patients with or without tinnitus. Results: Three observational, case-control studies encompassing four cohorts and totaling 468 patients with (n = 268) or without tinnitus (n = 200) were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled analysis with quality effects models evidenced significantly reduced serum Vit D levels in patients with tinnitus compared to those without (weighted mean difference [WMD], −6.2 ng/mL; 95% CI, −10.3 to −2.1 ng/mL; I2, 56%). Serum Vit D was found to be 22% lower in patients with tinnitus compared to those without. Conclusions: Lower serum Vit D levels may be associated with tinnitus, thus paving the way to plan future trials aimed at exploring whether Vit D supplementation may aid in preventing and/or improving tinnitus.

Abstract
PURPOSE A growing body of literature has suggested that a history of bariatric surgery increases the risk of hypocalcemia after subsequent thyroidectomy, however little is known about the risk after parathyroidectomy. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of hypocalcemia after parathyroidectomy in patients with prior bariatric surgery. METHODS The TriNetX Research Network was queried using diagnosis and procedure codes to identify patients with a history of bariatric surgery who were subsequently diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) and underwent parathyroidectomy between 2012 and 2022. The rate of hypocalcemia after parathyroidectomy was compared between those with a history of bariatric surgery and controls who underwent parathyroidectomy alone, matched for demographics, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2, and history of calcium or vitamin D supplementation. RESULTS There were 34,483 included patients diagnosed with PHP who underwent parathyroidectomy. Of this cohort, 1.4% (n = 472) had prior bariatric surgery. There were 90% females and 10% males in this subset of patients, and the average age was 58 years. Compared to matched controls who underwent parathyroidectomy alone, these patients had a significantly increased risk of hypocalcemia within 0-1 month (RR, 95% CI, P) (17.2% vs. 9.3%; 1.8, 1.3-2.6, P < 0.001), 1-6 months (8.5% vs. 2.5%; 3.3, 1.8-6.3, P < 0.001) and 6-12 months (6.8% vs. 2.3%; 2.9, 1.5-5.7, P < 0.001) following surgery. CONCLUSION The current study is the first to indicate that patients with a history of bariatric surgery are at increased risk for short-term and permanent hypocalcemia after parathyroidectomy. Further research is required to determine optimal prevention and treatment strategies to decrease associated morbidity in this subset of patients.

Abstract
Background and Aim Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can disrupt sleep, leading to poor sleep quality. This may in part be due to the symptoms of IBD and the influence of pro-inflammatory cytokines on sleep. This study aimed to investigate the potential influence of IBD medications on sleep quality. Methods An online survey of adults with IBD was conducted, which included measures of sleep quality, IBD activity, anxiety, depression, and physical activity. Logistic regression was used to investigate possible associations between IBD medications (corticosteroids, immunomodulators, biologics, aminosalicyate) and outcome of poor sleep. A generalized linear model was built for outcome of sleep quality score. Results There were 544 participants included in the final analysis, median age of 42, and 61% with Crohn's disease. Increased odds of poor sleep were seen in those taking opioids, medications for anxiety or depression, corticosteroids, vitamin D, methotrexate, and infliximab. A multivariate model was built incorporating demographic and IBD variables with opioids present in the final model and associated with increased odds of poor sleep. This was in addition to medications for sleep, depression, anxiety, IBD activity, and body weight. In a multivariate generalized linear model, opioids and methotrexate were associated with worse sleep quality scores. Conclusions Opioids were associated with increased odds of poor sleep independent of other factors. This provides further support for avoiding these medications in people with IBD. Infliximab was associated with increased body weight and consequently increased odds of poor sleep.

Abstract
This study sought to assess the association between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and chest pain, anxiety, and fatigue in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect data from a sample of 90 participants with CAD. Serum 25OHD3 was measured using a radioimmunoassay procedure. Chest pain was assessed using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, anxiety using the Anxiety Subscale, and fatigue by the General Fatigue subscale. The majority of participants (80%) had VDD. Results showed that the level of vitamin D was significantly negatively associated with chest pain (r = -.43, p = .00); anxiety (r = -.466, p = .00); and fatigue (r = -.25, p = .018). Findings suggest the role of VDD in heightened central sensitivity in cardiac-related symptoms such as chest pain, anxiety, and fatigue. Patients with CAD should be monitored for VDD so that the condition can be corrected.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with the development of various complications, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, and an increased risk for infections, driven by dysfunctional innate immune responses. Recent insights have revealed that the availability of nutrients is a key determinant of innate immune cell function. Although the presence of obesity is associated with overnutrition of macronutrients, several micronutrient deficiencies, including Vitamin D and zinc, are often present. Micronutrients have been attributed important immunomodulatory roles. In this review, we summarize current knowledge of the immunomodulatory effects of Vitamin D and zinc. We also suggest future lines of research to further improve our understanding of these micronutrients; this may serve as a stepping-stone to explore micronutrient supplementation to improve innate immune cell function during obesity.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the vitamin D status after acute spinal cord injury (SCI) onset. SETTING Specialized SCI rehabilitation center in Switzerland. METHODS Patients admitted to the center after an acute SCI onset were included. The prevalence of a deficient (25(OH)D ≤ 50 nmol/l), insufficient (50 < 25(OH)D ≤ 75 nmol/l) and sufficient (25(OH)D > 75 nmol/l) vitamin D status were determined after admission. Vitamin D status was compared between different patient groups based on demographic and SCI characteristics. The occurrence of bed rest, falls and pressure injuries were also assessed. RESULTS In total, 87 patients (median (interquartile range); 53 (39-67) years, 25 females, 66 traumatic SCI, 54 paraplegia) were included. Assessed a median of 15 (9-22) days after SCI onset, median vitamin D status was 41 (26-57) (range 8-155) nmol/l. The majority of patients had a deficient (67%, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.56-0.76) or insufficient (25%, 95% CI 0.17-0.36) vitamin D status. A moderate negative correlation was found between vitamin D status and body mass index (p = 0.003). A moderate positive correlation was found between vitamin D and calcium status (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION A deficient or insufficient vitamin D status directly after SCI onset is highly prevalent. Vitamin D status should be carefully observed during acute SCI rehabilitation. We recommend that all patients with recent SCI onset should receive vitamin D supplementation with a dosage depending on their actual vitamin D status.

Abstract
Growth traits are economically important traits in sheep breeding. This study was conducted to evaluate the polymorphisms of ALB, AHSG and GC genes and their association with growth traits in Hu sheep. We measured and recorded the body weight (BW), body height (BH), body length (BL) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1418 male Hu sheep raised in the same environment from 80 to 180 days of age. The total of four SNPs in the ALB, AHSG and GC genes were identified by direct sequencing technology. The results of association analysis showed that two loci (g.8699 A>T and g.13458 T>C) of ALB gene significantly affect average daily gain (ADG; P < 0.05). The genotypes of SNP g.2454 T>C in AHSG gene were significantly associated with ADG and FCR (P < 0.05). There were significant associations between GC g.19484 A>C and BW, BH and BL (P < 0.05). The results of qRT-PCR showed that ALB, AHSG, and GC genes were extremely significantly higher in H_BW sheep compared with those in the L_BW sheep (P < 0.01). These results revealed that ALB-1 g.8699 A>T, ALB-2 g.13458 T>C, AHSG g.2454 T>C and GC g.19484 A>C loci are potential molecular markers for Hu sheep breeding.

Abstract
Obesity is a disease in which fat is abnormally or excessively accumulated in the body, and many studies have been conducted to overcome it with various techniques. In this study, we evaluated whether micro-current stimulation (MCS) can be applied to prevent obesity by regulating the adipogenesis through 3T3-L1 cells and ob/ob mice. To specify the intensity of MCS, Oil Red O staining was conducted with various intensities of MCS. Based on these, subsequent experiments used 200 and 400 μA for the intensity of MCS. The expressions of insulin signaling pathway-related proteins, including phosphorylation of IGF-1 and IR, were decreased in all MCS groups, and in turn, downstream signals such as Akt and ERK were decreased. In addition, MCS reduced the nucleus translocation of PPAR-γ and decreased the protein expression of C/EBP-α. In the ob/ob mouse model, MCS reduced body weight gain and abdominal adipose tissue volume. In particular, the concentration of triglycerides in serum was also decreased. Taken together, our findings showed that MCS inhibited lipid accumulation by regulating insulin signaling in 3T3-L1, and it was effective at reducing body weight and adipose tissue volume in ob/ob mice. These suggest that MCS may be a useful treatment approach for obesity.

Abstract
Celiac disease is a rising disorder and is becoming frequently diagnosed in recent years. To date, the only available treatment is the gluten-free diet (GFD). The role of gluten on components of metabolic syndrome and on related inflammatory response is still unclear due to controversial results. In recent years, scientific focus on this topic has been growing up, in particular regarding the role of the GFD on glycometabolic parameters and diabetes. In addition, studies on the remaining components showed discordant results, which was likely due to heterogeneous and large celiac disease populations and to the lack of prospective studies. Furthermore, knowledge about the role of the GFD on inflammatory cytokines and the relationship among vitamin D and celiac disease, metabolic syndrome (MS) and GFD is needed. In this narrative review, we provided evidence regarding the role of the GFD on glycometabolic parameters, cholesterol, triglycerides, waist circumference, blood pressure and inflammatory cascade, also evaluating the role of vitamin D, trying to summarize whether this nutritional pattern may be a value-added for subjects with dysmetabolic conditions. Finally, due to the limited findings and very low-certainty evidence, predominantly based on observational studies, the real effects of a GFD on different components of MS, however, are unclear; nevertheless, an improvement in HDL levels has been reported, although data on glycemic levels are discordant.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin with multiple functions. However, the metabolism of people with different vitamin D concentrations is still unclear. Herein, we collected clinical data and analysed the serum metabolome of people with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) ≥40 ng/mL (A), 30 ng/mL ≤25(OH)D <40 ng/mL (B) and 25(OH)D <30 ng/mL (C) by the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. We found that haemoglobin A1c, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and thioredoxin interaction protein were enhanced, while HOMA-β was reduced with the decrease of 25(OH)D concentration. In addition, people in the C group were diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes. Metabolomics analysis showed that seven, thirty-four and nine differential metabolites were identified in the groups B vs A, C vs A and C vs B, respectively. Metabolites associated with cholesterol metabolism and bile acid biosynthesis, such as 7-ketolithocholic acid, 12-ketolithocholic acid, apocholic acid, N-arachidene glycine and d-mannose 6-phosphate, were significantly upregulated in the C group compared with the A or B groups. In conclusion, the disorder of vitamin D metabolism may be related to cholesterol metabolism and bile acid biosynthesis. This study provided a basis for exploring the possible mechanism leading to abnormal vitamin D metabolism.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Genetic factors, some underlying medical conditions, and obesity are risk factors of T2DM. Unlike other risk factors which are non-modifiable, obesity is preventable and usually treatable, and is largely contributed by lifestyle factors. Management of these lifestyle factors may curb the development of T2DM and reduces T2DM prevalence. Dietary vitamins have been recommended as a lifestyle modification intervention to support obesity treatment. Vitamins correlate negatively with body weight, body mass index and body composition. Some of the vitamins may also have anti-adipogenic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, results from pre-clinical and clinical studies of the effects of vitamins on obesity are inconsistent. A clear understanding of the effects of vitamins on obesity will help determine dietary intervention that is truly effective in preventing and treating obesity as well as obesity-related complications including T2DM. This article reviews existing evidences of the effects of vitamin supplementation on obesity and obesity-related metabolic status.

Abstract
This study assessed the vitamin D status among women in South-East Oases of Morocco. Two hundred thirty-three healthy volunteer women were recruited at five urban and rural health centers. Hypovitaminosis D is very common in this region and correlated to age, monthly income, skin color, daily sun exposure, BMI, and body fat percentage. PURPOSE This study assessed the vitamin D status among women in the Draa-Tafilalet region and its relationship with clinical, anthropometric, and behavioral parameters. METHODS The study was carried out with 233 women in consultation at five urban and rural health centers in the South-East region of Morocco. The data collected relate to age, monthly income, educational level, BMI, body fat percentage, daily sun exposure, physical activity level, veil wear, and skin color. The plasma determination of vitamin D was measured by immunofluorescence. Statistical analyses were performed using Python and Jamovi. RESULTS The median 25(OH)D plasma concentration was 9.95 ng/mL (IQR: 8-13.18). A total of 50.64% of women had 25(OH)D levels below 10 ng/ml and 47.21% had levels between 10 and 30 ng/mL. Statistical tests showed an association between hydroxyvitamin D plasma levels and age (r = - 0.139; p = 0.034), monthly income (p = 0.001), BMI (r = - 0.200; p = 0.002), body fat percentage (r = - 0.131; p = 0.049), daily sun exposure (r = 0.165; p = 0.012), and skin color (p < 0.001). Binomial logistic regression showed that darker skin was associated with vitamin D deficiency (< 10 ng/mL). It also showed that high income and longer sun exposure could be protecting factors against vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSION The plasma concentrations of vitamin D in women in the Draa-Tafilalet region were low compared to expected results for a high sunshine time area.

Abstract
CONTEXT Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare complex genetic syndrome, characterized by delayed psychomotor development, hypotonia, and hyperphagia. Hormone deficiencies such as hypogonadism, hypothyroidism, and growth hormone deficiency are common. The combination of hypotonia, low physical activity, and hypogonadism might lead to a decrease in bone mass and increase in fracture risk. Moreover, one would expect an increased risk of scoliosis due to hypotonia and low physical activity. OBJECTIVE To study the prevalence and risk factors for skeletal problems (reduced bone mineral density, fractures, and scoliosis) in adults with PWS. METHODS We retrospectively collected patient characteristics, medical history, medication, biochemical measurements, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans, and spinal X-rays and reviewed the current literature. RESULTS We included 354 adults with PWS (median age 31 years; 43% males), of whom 51 (14%) had osteoporosis (T-score below -2.5) and 143 (54%) had osteopenia (T-score -1 to -2.5). The most prevalent modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis were hypogonadism, insufficient dairy intake, sedentary lifestyle, and corticosteroid use. Male sex was associated with osteoporosis (P = .005). Growth hormone treatment was not associated with osteoporosis. A history of vertebral fractures was present in 10 (3%) and nonvertebral fractures in 59 (17%). Scoliosis was present in 263 (80%), but no modifiable risk factors were identified. CONCLUSION Besides scoliosis, osteoporosis is common in adults with PWS. Based on the literature and the risk factors for osteoporosis found in our cohort, we provide practical clinical recommendations to avoid skeletal complications in these vulnerable patients.

Abstract
The ability of the body to maintain homeostasis requires constant communication between the brain and peripheral tissues. Different organs produce signals, often in the form of hormones, which are detected by the hypothalamus. In response, the hypothalamus alters its regulation of bodily processes, which is achieved through its own pathways of hormonal communication. The generation and transmission of the molecules involved in these bi-directional axes can be affected by redox balance. The essential trace element selenium is known to influence numerous physiological processes, including energy homeostasis, through its various redox functions. Selenium must be obtained through the diet and is used to synthesize selenoproteins, a family of proteins with mainly antioxidant functions. Alterations in selenium status have been correlated with homeostatic disturbances in humans and studies with animal models of selenoprotein dysfunction indicate a strong influence on energy balance. The relationship between selenium and energy metabolism is complicated, however, as selenium has been shown to participate in multiple levels of homeostatic communication. This review discusses the role of selenium in the various pathways of communication between the body and the brain that are essential for maintaining homeostasis.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Vitamin D metabolism is altered in obese individuals. Our findings indicated that in patients with severe obesity, a relatively low 25(OH)D concentration was required to suppress PTH. The PTH inflection point increased following surgery-induced weight loss, highlighting 25(OH)D different regulation mechanisms in patients with obesity. INTRODUCTION An optimal and sufficient concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) has been suggested as the level required to maximally suppress intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH). We evaluated the role of surgery-induced weight loss in determining the threshold(s) of 25(OH)D required to suppress iPTH. METHODS This study was conducted in the framework of the Tehran Obesity Treatment Study (TOTS). We prospectively analyzed 687 patients with severe obesity who participated in the TOTS and underwent bariatric surgery from March 2013 to March 2019. The patients were followed for 1 year after surgery. Anthropometric parameters and serum levels of iPTH, 25OHD, phosphorous, and calcium were measured. Nonlinear and piecewise linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship between 25(OH)D and iPTH and to determine the 25(OH)D-suppression point at which iPTH was maximally suppressed. RESULTS Body mass index was 44.6 kg/m2 at the baseline and decreased to 29.7 kg/m2 1 year after surgery (P < 0.05). Before the surgery, iPTH and 25(OH)D showed an exponential relationship; iPTH began to decrease rapidly at 25(OH)D concentration of 12 ng/mL, reaching maximal suppression at 30 ng/mL. However, the relationship between 25(OH)D and iPTH was non-exponential 1 year after surgery. The piecewise linear regression model revealed the 25(OH)D concentration of 21 ng/mL as the inflection point following surgery-induced weight loss. CONCLUSION In patients with severe obesity, PTH was suppressed at a relatively lower concentration of 25(OH)D; this threshold increased following surgery-induced weight loss. These findings suggest a role for bariatric surgery in regulating 25(OH)D metabolism in patients with obesity.

Abstract
Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that leads to demyelination and neurodegeneration has been associated with various environmental and lifestyle factors. Population-based studies have provided evidence showing the prevalence of MS is increasing worldwide. Because a similar trend has been observed for obesity and metabolic syndrome, interest has grown in possible underlying biological mechanisms shared by both conditions. Adipokines, a family of soluble factors produced by adipose tissue that participate in a wide range of biological functions, contribute to a low state of chronic inflammation observed in obesity, and influence immune function, metabolism, and nutritional state. In this review, we aim to describe epidemiological and biological factors common to MS and obesity, as well as provide an update on current knowledge of how different pro- and anti-inflammatory adipokines participate as immune response mediators in MS, as well as in the animal model for MS, namely, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) leading to demyelination, and neurodegeneration. Although its pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, there is considerable evidence to suggest MS arises from complex interactions between individual genetic susceptibility and external environmental factors. In recent decades, population-based studies have provided evidence indicating the prevalence of MS is increasing worldwide, in parallel with the rise in obesity and metabolic syndrome. This synchronous increment in the incidence of both MS and obesity has led to a search for potential biological mechanisms linking both conditions. Notably, a large number of studies have established significant correlation between obesity and higher prevalence, or worse prognosis, of several immune-mediated conditions. Fat tissue has been found to produce a variety of soluble factors named adipokines. These mediators, secreted by both adipocytes as well as diverse immune cells, participate in a wide range of biological functions, further strengthening the concept of a link between immune function, metabolism, and nutritional state. Because obesity causes overproduction of pro-inflammatory adipokines (namely leptin, resistin and visfatin) and reduction of anti-inflammatory adipokines (adiponectin and apelin), adipose tissue dysregulation would appear to contribute to a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation favoring the development of disease. In this review, we present a summary of current knowledge related to the pathological effects of different adipokines, prevalent in obese MS patients.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent condition that not only has the potential to impede conception but also represents the most common endocrine dysfunction in fertile women. It is considered a heterogeneous and multifaceted disorder, with multiple reproductive and metabolic phenotypes which differently affect the early- and long-term syndrome's risks. Undoubtedly, the impact of PCOS on infertility has attracted most of the attention of healthcare providers and investigators. However, there is growing evidence that even after conception is achieved, PCOS predisposes the parturient to several adverse pregnancy outcomes including a high risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension, spontaneous abortion, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm birth, which increase the risks of stillbirth and neonatal death. Fetal growth abnormalities may also be more common, but the relationship is less well defined. This narrative review aims to summarize current knowledge regarding these conditions as they interplay with PCOS and concludes that although there appears to be an increase in these complications during the pregnancy of women with PCOS, there is a need for further research to clarify the possible confounding impact of obesity. Implications for clinical practice and future research are outlined.

Abstract
Obesity and vitamin D deficiency are both considered risk factors for mortality, but the potential additive effects of vitamin D status and obesity on mortality has not been well-studied. We aimed to examine the possible additive effects of obesity and vitamin D status on all-cause and cause-specific mortality. The data from the NHANES III (1988–1994) and NHANES 2001–2014 surveys were used, and multivariate Cox regression models were performed to assess the additive effects of vitamin D status and overweight/obesity/abdominal obesity on the all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality, by stratifying Cox Hazard Ratios (HRs) across different categories of vitamin D status and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) categories. The models were adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, gender, educational level, family income to poverty ratio, leisure-time physical activity, smoking, and drinking. Across all BMI/WC categories, there was an additive effect of the vitamin D both insufficiency and deficiency on all mortality rates, with deficiency having much stronger effect than insufficiency. Interestingly, the effect of vitamin D deficiency overcame the effect of obesity on all mortality rates. The highest HRs for overall and cardiovascular mortality were observed among vitamin D deficient obese/abdominally obese subjects, while for cancer mortality among vitamin D deficient normal weight/non-abdominally obese subjects. In stratified analyses, regarding all-cause mortality, there was an additive effect of the vitamin D both insufficiency and deficiency in all BMI/WC categories. Regarding cardiovascular mortality, there was an additive effect of vitamin D deficiency in all BMI/WC categories, but the additive effect of vitamin D insufficiency reached significance only in normal weight subjects. Regarding cancer mortality, the effect did not reach significance among obese subjects for vitamin D deficiency, while for insufficiency, significance was reached only among non-abdominally obese subjects. Interestingly, vitamin D surplus was associated with increased risk for cancer mortality in obese subjects, but there was an inadequate number of subjects in this category to make proper judgment. In conclusion, vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency gradually increase risk for mortality across all BMI/WC categories. In our analyses, vitamin D deficiency overcame the effect of obesity on mortality rates.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by destruction of the myelin sheath structure. The loss of myelin leads to damage of a neuron’s axon and cell body, which is identified as brain lesions on magnetic resonance image (MRI). The pathogenesis of MS remains largely unknown. However, immune mechanisms, especially those linked to the aberrant lymphocyte activity, are mainly responsible for neuronal damage. Th1 and Th17 populations of lymphocytes were primarily associated with MS pathogenesis. These lymphocytes are essential for differentiation of encephalitogenic CD8+ T cell and Th17 lymphocyte crossing the blood brain barrier and targeting myelin sheath in the CNS. B-lymphocytes could also contribute to MS pathogenesis by producing anti-myelin basic protein antibodies. In later studies, aberrant function of Treg and Th9 cells was identified as contributing to MS. This review summarizes the aberrant function and count of lymphocyte, and the contributions of these cell to the mechanisms of MS. Additionally, we have outlined the novel MS therapeutics aimed to amend the aberrant function or counts of these lymphocytes.

Abstract
Despite the growing evidence from meta-analyses on vitamin D's anti-obesity properties, their results are controversial. The current umbrella review was performed to assess the available evidence and provide a conclusive explanation in this regard. The international databases PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar were systematically searched till March, 2022. A random-effects model was used to run the meta-analysis. All meta-analyses that examined the effect of vitamin D supplementation on BW, BMI, WC, and fat mass were included. Findings of 14 meta-analyses revealed that vitamin D supplementation reduced body mass index (BMI) (ES: -0.11 kg/m2; 95% CI: -0.18, -0.05, p?0.001; I 2 = 61.0%, p < 0.001), and waist circumference (WC) (ES = -0.79 cm; 95% CI: -1.20, -0.37; p < 0.001; I 2 = 46.5%, p = 0.096) in comparison to control group. However, the effects of vitamin D on body weight (ES = -0.16 kg, 95% CI: -0.36, 0.04; p = 0.125; I 2 = 57.0%, p = 0.017), and fat mass (ES: 0.02, 95% CI: -0.20, 0.24, p = 0.868; I 2 = 0.0%, p = 0.531) were not considerable. Vitamin D supplementation significantly improved levels of obesity indices such as BMI, and WC.

Abstract
This descriptive study aimed to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components among Chinese children and adolescents aged 7–17 from 2016–2017 according to the Cook’s criteria modified for age on the basis of the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) and to evaluate the associations between the factors of interest (especially vitamin A, vitamin D and hyperuricemia) of MetS and its components, using data from the China National Nutrition and Health Survey of Children and Lactating Mothers from 2016–2017. A total of 54,269 school-aged children and adolescents were ultimately included in this study. Anthropometric measurements and laboratory examinations of the subjects and their relevant information were also collected. A multivariate logistic regression analysis model was applied to analyze the relationships between relevant factors associated with MetS and its components. In the present study, the prevalence of MetS in children and adolescents was 5.98%. Among the five components of MetS, elevated blood pressure (BP) and abdominal obesity were the most prevalent (39.52% and 17.30%), and 58.36% of the subjects had at least one of these components. In the multivariate logistic regression, an overweight condition, obesity and hyperuricemia were positively correlated with the incidence of MetS and all five components. There was also a positive association observed between vitamin A and the risk of MetS and some components of MetS (abdominal obesity and high triglycerides (TG)) and vitamin A was negatively associated with the risk of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Subjects with vitamin D inadequacy had a higher risk of MetS (OR = 1.364, 95%CI: 1.240–1.500) and four of its components, excepting elevated FBG (fast blood glucose). Vitamin D deficiency was positively associated with MetS (OR = 1.646, 95%CI: 1.468–1.845) and all five of its components. Well-designed, large-scale prospective studies are also needed in the future.

Abstract
Obesity has been linked to vitamin D (VD) deficiency and low calcium (CAL) status. In the last decade, dietary supplementation of vitamin D and calcium (VD-CAL) have been extensively studied in animal experiments and human studies. However, the physiological mechanisms remain unknown as to whether the VD-CAL axis improves homeostasis and reduces biomarkers in regulating obesity and other metabolic diseases directly or indirectly. This review sought to investigate their connections. This topic was examined in scientific databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed from 2011 to 2021, and 87 articles were generated for interpretation. Mechanistically, VD-CAL regulates from the organs to the blood, influencing insulin, lipids, hormone, cell, and inflammatory functions in obesity and its comorbidities, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and type-2 diabetes mellitus. Nevertheless, previous research has not consistently shown that simultaneous VD-CAL supplementation affects weight loss or reduces fat content. This discrepancy may be influenced by population age and diversity, ethnicity, and geographical location, and also by degree of obesity and applied doses. Therefore, a larger prospective cohort and randomised trials are needed to determine the exact role of VD-CAL and their interrelationship.

Abstract
Background: The association between vitamin D and weight gain remains controversial due to important limitations in the studies. We investigated the relationship between vitamin D levels and 5 and 10 years of weight and waist circumference change in a population-based prospective cohort study. Methods: Prospective study including participants aged between 35 and 75 years living in the city of Lausanne, Switzerland. Weight and waist change at 5- and 10-year follow-up were assessed according to baseline vitamin D status (normal, insufficiency and deficiency). Results: A total of 3638 participants (47.9 % women, mean age 51.6 ± 10.4 years) were included for the 5-year follow-up. No association was found between vitamin D categories and weight change, multivariate-adjusted average ± standard error: 1.6 ± 0.3, 1.5 ± 0.2 and 1.2 ± 0.1 kg for normal, insufficiency and deficiency, respectively, p = 0.159. For waist change, the corresponding values were 3.3 ± 0.4, 3.3 ± 0.2 and 3.4 ± 0.2 cm, p = 0.792. For the 10-year follow-up, data from 2999 participants (45.8% women, mean age 50.8 ± 10.3 years) were used. No association was found for weight 2.3 ± 0.4, 2.3 ± 0.2 and 2.0 ± 0.2 kg, p = 0.588, or for waist 3.7 ± 0.4, 3.6 ± 0.3 and 4.2 ± 0.2 cm for normal, insufficiency and deficiency, respectively, p = 0.259. Conclusion: No association between vitamin D status and weight or waist gain at 5- and 10-year follow-up was found.

Abstract
PURPOSE Medical complications of eating disorders in males are understudied compared to females, as is the case of vitamin D deficiency. The aim of this study was to assess vitamin D levels among male and female adolescents and young adults hospitalized for medical complications of eating disorders. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records of patients aged 9-25 years (N = 565) admitted to the University of California, San Francisco Eating Disorders Program for medical instability, between May 2012 and August 2020. Serum vitamin D (25-hydroxy) level was assessed at admission as was history of prior calcium, vitamin D, or multivitamin supplementation. Linear regression was used to assess factors associated with vitamin D levels. RESULTS A total of 93 males and 472 females met eligibility criteria (age 15.5 ± 2.8, 58.8% anorexia nervosa; admission body mass index 17.6 ± 2.91). Among male participants, 44.1% had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels < 30 ng/mL, 18.3% had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels < 20 ng/mL, and 8.6% had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels < 12 ng/mL. There were no significant differences in 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in males compared to females, except that a lower proportion (1.9%) of female participants had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels < 12 ng/mL (p = 0.001). Only 3.2% of males reported calcium or vitamin D-specific supplementation prior to hospital admission, while 8.6% reported taking multivitamins. White race, prior calcium/vitamin D supplementation, and higher calcium levels were associated with higher vitamin D levels on admission. CONCLUSIONS Nearly half of patients admitted to the hospital for malnutrition secondary to eating disorders presented with low 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels; males were more likely than females to have severe vitamin D deficiency. These findings support vitamin D assessment as part of the routine medical/nutritional evaluation for hospitalized eating disorder patients, with particular attention on male populations.

Abstract
Little is known about potential protective factors for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), referred to as COVID-19. Suboptimal vitamin D status is a risk factor for immune dysfunction, respiratory tract infections (RTIs), and viral infections. Supplementation of vitamin D (2000-4000 IU) has decreased incidence and complications from RTIs, respiratory distress syndrome, and pneumonia and may be beneficial in high-risk populations. Given the possible link between low vitamin D status and RTIs, such as COVID-19, this review examined whether vitamin D supplementation can be supported as a nutritional strategy for reducing risk of infection, complications, and mortality from COVID-19 and found that the relationship between vitamin D and RTIs warrants further exploration.

Abstract
There is conflicting evidence of the roles vitamin D and iron have in isolation and combined in relation to muscle health. The purpose of this narrative review was to examine the current literature on the roles that vitamin D and iron have on skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function and how these nutrients are associated with skeletal muscle health in specific populations. Secondary purposes include exploring if low vitamin D and iron status are interrelated with skeletal muscle health and chronic inflammation and reviewing the influence of animal-source foods rich in these nutrients on health and performance. PubMed, Scopus, SPORT Discus, EMBAE, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases were searched to determine eligible studies. There was a positive effect of vitamin D on muscle mass, particularly in older adults. There was a positive effect of iron on aerobic and anaerobic performance. Studies reported mixed results for both vitamin D and iron on muscle strength and function. While vitamin D and iron deficiency commonly occur in combination, few studies examined effects on skeletal muscle health and inflammation. Isolated nutrients such as iron and vitamin D may have positive outcomes; however, nutrients within food sources may be most effective in improving skeletal muscle health.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between body composition and nutritional status with the level of vitamin D metabolites 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D in patients in the long term after kidney transplantation (KTx). Material/Methods During 2 routine outpatient visits in summer and winter, the anthropometric and body composition measurements and laboratory data from 105 stable KTx patients were taken and the annual averages were analyzed. Results Data of 64 patients (26 F, 38 M) at mean age 49.3±12.2 years and 5.6±2.7 years after KTx with mean BMI 26.9 kg/m2 were included for final analysis. Mean annual 25(OH)D concentration was 18.76±6.32 ng/dl and 1,25(OH)2D 86.65±18.0 pg/ml. A reverse relationship between 25(OH)D level and fat tissue index was observed (r=−0.26; P=0.039). 25(OH)D level increased together with body cell mass (r=0.30, P=0.017) and lean tissue mass values (r=0.30, P=0.015). The body weight and BMI were not associated with 25(OH)D or 1,25(OH)2D level. A reverse relationship was found between: 25(OH)D and total cholesterol (r=−0.31, P=0.012) and LDL level (r=−0.25, P=0.049), and between 1,25(OH)2D and HDL level (r=−0.25, P=0.046). No significant correlations between biochemical nutritional parameters, graft function and 25(OH)D or 1,25(OH)2D were noted. Conclusions Body composition is one of the factors affecting the vitamin D status in KTx patients. Fat tissue index is a negative predictor of 25(OH)D level in patients in the long term after KTx. A low level of 25(OH)D predisposes to lipids disturbances in KTx recipients.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with a higher risk of several types of cancer, grouped as obesity-related cancers (ORC). Vitamin D deficiency is more prevalent in obese subjects, and it has been suggested to play a role in the association between obesity and cancer risk. The aim of the study was to analyze the association between vitamin D intake and the subsequent risk of ORC in a prospective Spanish cohort of university graduates. The SUN Project, initiated in 1999, is a prospective dynamic multipurpose cohort. Participants answered a 556-item lifestyle baseline questionnaire that included a validated food-frequency questionnaire. We performed Cox regression models to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) of ORC according to quartiles of energy-adjusted vitamin D intake (diet and supplements). We included 18,017 participants (mean age = 38 years, SD = 12 years), with a median follow-up of 12 years. Among 206,783 person-years of follow-up, we identified 225 cases of ORC. We found no significant associations between vitamin D intake and ORC risk after adjusting for potential confounders: HRQ2vsQ1 = 1.19 (95% CI 0.81–1.75), HRQ3vsQ1 = 1.20 (95% CI 0.81–1.78), and HRQ4vsQ1 = 1.02 (95% CI 0.69–1.51). Dietary and supplemented vitamin D do not seem to be associated with ORC prevention in the middle-aged Spanish population.

Abstract
Hypovitaminosis D is prevalent worldwide, and especially in South-Asia. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), 25(OH)D levels below 30 nmol/L are defined as vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and levels between 30−50 nmol/L as insufficiency (VDI). Besides its role in calcium homeostasis, it has been postulated that vitamin D is involved in metabolic syndrome. Given the scarcity of data on vitamin D status in Nepal, we aimed to examine the prevalence of VDD and VDI, as well as the determinants and association with metabolic parameters (lipids, HbA1c), in a cohort of women in rural Nepal. Altogether, 733 women 48.5 ± 11.7 years of age were included. VDD and VDI were observed in 6.3 and 42.4% of the participants, respectively, and the prevalence increased by age. Women reporting intake of milk and eggs > 2 times weekly had higher 25(OH)D levels than those reporting intake < 2 times weekly. Women with vitamin D levels < 50 nmol/L displayed higher levels of cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and HbA1c. Additionally, a regression analysis showed a significant association between hypovitaminosis D, dyslipidemia, and HbA1c elevation. In conclusion, VDI was prevalent and increased with age. Milk and egg intake > 2 times weekly seemed to decrease the risk of VDI. Moreover, hypovitaminosis D was associated with an adverse metabolic profile.

Abstract
Obesity already causes non-communicable diseases during childhood, but the mechanisms of disease development are insufficiently understood. Myokines such as myostatin and irisin are muscle-derived factors possibly involved in obesity-associated diseases. This explorative study aims to investigate whether myostatin and irisin are associated with metabolic parameters, including the vitamin D status in pediatric patients with severe obesity. Clinical, anthropometric and laboratory data from 108 patients with severe obesity (>97th percentile) aged between 9 and 19 years were assessed. Myostatin, its antagonist follistatin, and irisin, were measured from plasma by ELISA. Myostatin concentrations, particularly in males, positively correlated with age and pubertal stage, as well as metabolic parameters such as insulin resistance. Irisin concentrations correlated positively with HDL and negatively with LDL cholesterol values. For follistatin, the associations with age and pubertal stage were inverse. Strikingly, a negative correlation of myostatin with serum vitamin D levels was observed that remained significant after adjusting for age and pubertal stage. In conclusion, there is an independent association of low vitamin D and elevated myostatin levels. Further research may focus on investigating means to prevent increased myostatin levels in interventional studies, which might open several venues to putative options to treat and prevent obesity-associated diseases.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to identify whether vitamin-D deficiency (VDD) can alter the geometry of the coronary-resistance-artery system. Male Wistar rats were divided into vitamin-D-deficient (VD−, n = 10) and vitamin-D-supplemented (VD+, n = 8) groups. After eight weeks, branches and segments of the left-anterior-descending-coronary-artery (LAD) network were analyzed by a video-microscopy technique. Segments were divided into 50 μm-long cylindrical ring units. VDD did not increase the number of morphological abnormalities. The number of segments did not differ between the groups (VD−: 210 and VD+: 224; pooled data of 8 networks). A larger lumen area of branches was found in VD+ group, while 1–4-order branches were lengthier in the VD− group. VD− rats had less rich coronary-resistance-artery networks in terms of 50 µm-long units. (VD−: 6365 vs. VD+: 6602; pooled data of 8 networks). VD+ animals were richer in the 100–350 µm outer diameter range, and VD− animals were richer in the 400–550 µm-diameter units. In VD− rats, 150–200 and 300 µm units were almost missing at higher flow distances from the orifice. Serum vitamin-D alterations caused by dietary changes can affect the geometry of the coronary-artery network, which may contribute to vitamin-D-dependent changes in cardiovascular mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have reported the relevance between serum vitamin D and allergic immunoglobulin E (IgE) responses and atopic diseases. However, a metabolomics-based approach to the impacts of vitamin D on allergic reactions remains unclear. METHODS A total of 111 children completed a 3-year follow-up were enrolled and classified based on longitudinal vitamin D status (≥ 30 ng/ml, n = 54; 20-29.9 ng/ml, n = 41; <20 ng/ml, n = 16). Urinary metabolomic profiling was performed using 1 H-Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at age 3. Integrative analyses of their associations related to vitamin D levels, atopic indices, and allergies were performed, and their roles in functional metabolic pathways were also assessed. RESULTS Six and five metabolites were identified to be significantly associated with vitamin D status and atopic diseases, respectively (FDR-adjusted p-value <.05). A further correlation analysis revealed that vitamin D-associated 3-hydroxyisobutyric acid and glutamine were positively correlated with atopic disease-associated succinic acid and alanine, respectively. Furthermore, hippuric acid was negatively correlated with atopic disease-associated formic acid, which was positively correlated with vitamin D level (p < .01). Absolute eosinophil count (AEC) was positively correlated with serum D. pteronyssinus- and D. farinae-specific IgE level (p < .01) but negatively correlated with vitamin D level (p < .05). Amino acid metabolisms were significantly associated with vitamin D related to childhood allergies. CONCLUSION Integrative metabolomic analysis provides the link of vitamin D-associated metabolites with the gut microbiome and immunoallergic reactions related to childhood allergies.

Abstract
Insulin resistance (IR) is insulin failure in normal plasma levels to adequately stimulate glucose uptake by the peripheral tissues. IR is becoming more common in children and adolescents than before. There is a strong association between obesity in children and adolescents, IR, and the metabolic syndrome components. IR shows marked variation among different races, crucial to understanding the possible cardiovascular risk, specifically in high-risk races or ethnic groups. Genetic causes of IR include insulin receptor mutations, mutations that stimulate autoantibody production against insulin receptors, or mutations that induce the formation of abnormal glucose transporter 4 molecules or plasma cell membrane glycoprotein-1 molecules; all induce abnormal energy pathways and end with the development of IR. The parallel increase of IR syndrome with the dramatic increase in the rate of obesity among children in the last few decades indicates the importance of environmental factors in increasing the rate of IR. Most patients with IR do not develop diabetes mellitus (DM) type-II. However, IR is a crucial risk factor to develop DM type-II in children. Diagnostic standards for IR in children are not yet established due to various causes. Direct measures of insulin sensitivity include the hyperinsulinemia euglycemic glucose clamp and the insulin-suppression test. Minimal model analysis of frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test and oral glucose tolerance test provide an indirect estimate of metabolic insulin sensitivity/resistance. The main aim of the treatment of IR in children is to prevent the progression of compensated IR to decompensated IR, enhance insulin sensitivity, and treat possible complications. There are three main lines for treatment: Lifestyle and behavior modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgery. This review will discuss the magnitude, implications, diagnosis, and treatment of IR in children.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is still an important subject due to its significant effects on various tissues and functions. We found a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and increase in adipose tissue thicknesses. This situation reveals the importance of vitamin D supplementation, the harms of weight gain and obesity, and the importance of a balanced diet. PURPOSE Although the relationship between vitamin D (VitD) levels with body composition and physical/cognitive functions have been investigated in various studies, however, there is no study evaluating all these parameters together. In accordance with, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between VitD deficiency with body composition (i.e., skin, subcutaneous fat, and muscle thicknesses) and physical/cognitive functions. METHODS A total of 203 adults (78 M, 125 F, aged 19-91 years) who had recent 25-OH-vitamin D measurements were included. Ultrasonographic (US) measurements (skin, subcutaneous fat, and muscle thicknesses) were made from the dorsum of the hand, and anterior sides of forearm, arm, and thigh. Handgrip strength, gait speed, Timed Up and Go Test, and Chair Stand Test were evaluated. Additionally, cognitive status was also evaluated with Mini-Mental State Exam. RESULTS Subjects were classified as VitD deficient group (< 20 ng/ml, N = 125) and control group (≥ 20 ng/ml, N = 78). The groups were not significantly different as regards age, gender, and anthropometric measurements (all p > 0.05). Subcutaneous fat tissues were thicker in the VitD deficient group (all p < 0.05). All the other US measurements and functional/cognitive tests were not significantly different between the groups (all p > 0.05). According to linear regression analyses, body mass index (BMI) was independently related with all subcutaneous fat thicknesses in both genders, and VitD deficiency was related with all subcutaneous fat thicknesses in females and anterior forearm subcutaneous fat thickness in males (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION We imply that together with BMI, VitD deficiency is independently related with increased regional subcutaneous fat tissue. We also underscore the role of US measurements for evaluation of body composition in related clinical scenarios.

Abstract
Vitamin D status is influenced by well-known determinants, but factors associated with low 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in the cutaneous melanoma population are not well defined. The aim of this study was to confirm the well-known determinants and to assess new determinants for 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in a cutaneous melanoma population. In a prospectively included cohort of 387 patients with cutaneous melanoma the association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels with sex, age, body mass index, time of blood withdrawal, Fitzpatrick phototype, vitamin D supplementation, score for intensity of lifetime sun exposure, smoking, education level, hair and skin colour, eye colour, total number of benign naevi, freckles and parameters of chronic sun damage was investigated. In addition, 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were correlated with pathological parameters of the primary tumour and melanoma stage (8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed using R software. The following factors had a significant effect on vitamin D status: body mass index, seasonal time of blood sampling, vitamin D supplementation, and a subtype of skin, and hair colour.

Abstract
Background This study aims to identify the prevalence of 25OHD deficiency in Syrian patients and investigate the relationship with obesity and lipid profile. Methods A retrospective cohort study consisted of 201 patients of age >10 years, who referred to Al Assad and Al Mouwasat University Hospitals, Damascus, Syria from Oct/2020 to Oct/2021. The data was analyzed by using linear regressions and produced a matrix of correlations with significant equations between study variables. Results Firstly, participants were divided depending on 25OHD levels, where 92.5% of patients had 25OHD <30 ng/mL. Inverse correlation between 25OHD and BMI (P ≤ 0.001) was observed, where severe 25OHD deficiency group had higher BMI (27.40 ± 7.22 kg/m2) and higher levels of Chol (211 ± 67.12 mg/dl) than in sufficiency group.Secondly, participants were divided depending on BMI. Higher BMI associated with lower levels of 25OHD. Moreover, we derived that every increase in 25OHD by 1 ng/mL results in decrease of BMI by 0.26 kg/m2 (P ≤ 0.001) and results in decrease of Chol by 1.54 mg/dl (P ≤ 0.004). Conclusion A high prevalence of 25OHD deficiency was observed in this sample of Syrian patients. There is an inverse correlation between 25OHD and BMI regardless of age and gender. Moreover, the equation, that derived between 25OHD and BMI, represents a beneficial and an inexpensive tool in clinical practice to minimize testing of 25OHD by predicting its deficiency based on BMI and supports the impact of 25OHD supplementation for reduce BMI.

Abstract
PURPOSE The results of previous studies on the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and hyperuricemia are controversial. We hypothesized that serum 25(OH)D concentrations of U.S. adults would negatively correlate with the risk of hyperuricemia. METHOD Data came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2014 were used, after excluding those who met at least one of the exclusion criteria, a total of 9096 male individuals and 9500 female individuals aged 18 years or older were included. Binary logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline with fully adjusted confounding factors were applied to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D and hyperuricemia. We further performed stratified analysis and sensitivity analysis to minimize the influence of gender, metabolic syndrome, obesity and renal dysfunction on the above association. RESULTS We found a negative correlation between serum 25(OH)D and hyperuricemia. In the binary logistic regression analysis, compared with the highest serum 25(OH)D quartile [Q4: 25(OH)D > 77.10 nmol/L] group, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) in the lowest quartile [Q1: 25(OH)D ≤ 43.20 nmol/L] was 1.46 (1.22-1.75) in the fully adjusted model. Restricted cubic spline analysis showed L-shaped and non-linear relationships between 25(OH)D and hyperuricemia. In sensitivity analysis, after restricting to participants without significant renal dysfunction and obesity, the above association remained significant. After restricting to participants who were diagnosed as metabolic syndrome, above association remained significant in the fully adjusted model. In stratified analysis by gender, the association remained significant among males and females. CONCLUSIONS Serum 25(OH)D might be inversely associated with hyperuricemia in general U.S. adults. From our study, for people with unexplained hyperuricemia, screening for serum Vitamin D concentration might be necessary.

Abstract
Background: Vitamin D deficiency affects the general population and is very common among elderly Europeans. This study compared different supervised learning algorithms in a cohort of Spanish individuals aged 35–75 years to predict which anthropometric parameter was most strongly associated with vitamin D deficiency. Methods: A total of 501 participants were recruited by simple random sampling with replacement (reference population: 43,946). The analyzed anthropometric parameters were waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body roundness index (BRI), visceral adiposity index (VAI), and the Clinical University of Navarra body adiposity estimator (CUN-BAE) for body fat percentage. Results: All the anthropometric indices were associated, in males, with vitamin D deficiency (p < 0.01 for the entire sample) after controlling for possible confounding factors, except for CUN-BAE, which was the only parameter that showed a correlation in females. Conclusions: The capacity of anthropometric parameters to predict vitamin D deficiency differed according to sex; thus, WC, BMI, WHtR, VAI, and BRI were most useful for prediction in males, while CUN-BAE was more useful in females. The naïve Bayes approach for machine learning showed the best area under the curve with WC, BMI, WHtR, and BRI, while the logistic regression model did so in VAI and CUN-BAE.

Abstract
On 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the current novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a public health emergency of international concern and later characterized it as a pandemic. New data show that excess body mass and vitamin D deficiency might be related to the disease severity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether latitude, as a proxy of sunlight exposure and Vitamin D synthesis, and prevalent obesity among European populations, is related to COVID-19 spread and severity. European COVID-19 data (incidence and fatality), including information on the prevalence of obesity, social distancing, and others were obtained by the "Our World in Data" website on 17 April 2021. Adjusted analysis showed that higher COVID-19 incidence and fatality were pictured in countries being in higher latitude, both during the whole period, as well as, during the time period 1 November 2020-31 March 2021. Higher incidence and fatality of COVID-19 were observed where the prevalence of overweight/obesity was higher during the whole time period, whereas during the time period 1 November 2020-31 March 2021, only COVID-19 incidence was higher but not a fatality. The present results provide insights for targeted interventions and preventive strategies against COVID-19.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of vitamin D binding protein (VDBP, DBP) and its polymorphism in the vitamin D pathway and human health. This narrative review shows the latest literature on the most popular diseases that have previously been linked to VDBP. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in human metabolism, controlling phosphorus and calcium homeostasis. Vitamin D binding protein bonds vitamin D and its metabolites and transports them to target tissues. The most common polymorphisms in the VDBP gene are rs4588 and rs7041, which are located in exon 11 in domain III of the VDBP gene. rs4588 and rs7041 may be correlated with differences not only in vitamin D status in serum but also with vitamin D metabolites. This review supports the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the VDBP gene and presents the latest data showing correlations between VDBP variants with important human diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and others. In this review, we aim to systematize the knowledge regarding the occurrence of diseases and their relationship with vitamin D deficiencies, which may be caused by polymorphisms in the VDBP gene. Further research is required on the possible influence of SNPs, modifications in the structure of the binding protein, and their influence on the organism. It is also important to mention that most studies do not have a specific time of year to measure accurate vitamin D metabolite levels, which can be misleading in conclusions due to the seasonal nature of vitamin D.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Studies suggest that vitamin D is involved in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and influences serum lipids levels, while lipid disorders are also closely related to T2DM. This study attempts to explore the complex relationship of serum 25(OH)D3, serum lipids, and T2DM among Chinese population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 2326 subjects. The chi-square (χ2) test was applied to compare the prevalence of T2DM or dyslipidemia between two serum 25(OH)D3 levels. Linear regression was applied to analyze the correlation between serum lipids and 25(OH)D3 contents. Univariate and logistic analysis were used to explore the relationship between two lipid levels and T2DM. Mediation analysis was used to explore whether serum lipids mediate the relationship between two serum 25(OH)D3 levels and T2DM. Results: Compared to subjects with 25(OH)D3 ≥ 30 ng/mL, subjects with 25(OH)D3 < 30 ng/mL were higher in the prevalence of T2DM. The occurrences of high TG and low HDL-C were significantly higher in vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency than those in vitamin D sufficiency. Serum 25(OH)D3 content showed a reverse correlation with TC, TG, and LDL-C, but positive correlation with HDL-C. The odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals, 95%CI) of T2DM by comparing TG ≥ 2.26 mmol/L vs. TG < 2.26 mmol/L and HDL-C < 1.04 mmol/L vs. HDL-C ≥ 1.04 mmol/L in all participants were 2.48 (1.94-3.18) and 1.37 (1.07-1.75), respectively. Serum TG or HDL-C level partially mediated the relationship between two 25(OH)D3 level and T2DM. Conclusions: Serum 25(OH)D3 < 30 ng/mL seems to be associated with T2DM or dyslipidemia (high TG and low HDL-C) in our study, but there is still no proof of a cause-effect relationship. Moreover, serum TG or HDL-C level partially mediated the relationship between 25(OH)D3 levels and T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous observational studies have revealed the association between serum uric acid and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. However, the causality and the direction of the associations remain unknown. Thus, we performed a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal association between uric acid and 25-hydroxyvitamin D and to determine the direction of the association. METHOD Based on the summary-level GWAS data from large genome-wide association studies, several steps were taken in our analysis to select eligible single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which were strongly related to exposure as the instrumental variables. We used different analytical methods, such as inverse-variance weighting (IVW) method, weighted median, MR-Egger regression, and weighted mode method, to make our result more robust and reliable. The IVW method was used as the primary analysis. The Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, MR-PRESSO method, and "leave-one-out" sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the heterogeneities, horizontal pleiotropy, and robustness of the results. MR analyses were also conducted using genetic risk scores (GRS) as instrumental variables in both directions by using the same summary-level GWAS data. RESULTS Our two-sample MR analysis suggested a causal association of genetically predicted uric acid on 25-hydroxyvitamin D [IVW method: β(SE), -0.0352(0.0149); p = 0.0178], which suggested that a per mg/dl increase in uric acid was associated with a decrease of 0.74 nmol/L of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and the above results remained stable in the sensitivity analysis. By contrast, four MR methods suggested no causal relationship of 25-hydroxyvitamin D on serum uric acid [IVW β(SE), 0.0139 (0.0635); p = 0.826; MR-Egger β(SE), 0.0671 (0.108); p = 0.537; weighted median β(SE), 0.0933 (0.0495); p = 0.0598; weighted mode β(SE), 0.0562 (0.0463); p = 0.228, respectively]. After excluding the SNPs, which were associated with confounding factors and outlier SNPs, the IVW method suggested that there was still no causal association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D on serum uric acid. The GRS approach showed similar results. CONCLUSIONS Serum uric acid may causally affect the 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, whereas the causal role of 25-hydroxyvitamin D on uric acid was not supported in our MR analysis. Our findings suggest that increased levels of uric acid should prompt investigation for vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
Introduction It has been proven that high body mass index (BMI) levels can cause vitamin D deficiency, but the mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, this study attempts to explain this phenomenon from the perspective of blood lipid by using mendelian randomization (MR). Methods Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary datasets for serum lipids were obtained from the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium (GLGC). Vitamin D deficiency outcome data were acquired from the UK Biobank samples. Single-variable MR (SVMR) and multi-variable MR (MVMR) analyses were conducted using the TwoSampleMR package based on R 4.0.3. The four main methods were the random-effect inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted-median method, and weighted mode. Results In the SVMR of serum lipid/apolipoprotein levels on serum vitamin D level, it was found that elevated serum triacylglycerol (IVW, OR = 0.85, 95%CI:0.81-0.89, P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (IVW, OR = 0.93, 95%CI:0.90-0.95, P < 0.001), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (IVW, OR = 0.95, 95%CI:0.91-0.98, P < 0.001) levels all had a causal relationship with vitamin D deficiency, but significant pleiotropy was detected in the triacylglycerol (P = 0.001) and HDL (P = 0.003) analysis. MVMR analysis results were consistent with SVMR. Conclusion By using single-variable mendelian randomization and multi-variable mendelian randomization methods, we identified that the elevated serum triacylglycerol, LDL, and HDL levels all had a causal relationship with vitamin D deficiency. Taking into account the significant pleiotropy demonstrated in this study, the conclusions of this study should be treated with caution.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Vitamin D and testosterone deficiency have been widely related to obesity. However, only a few studies have investigated the effect of vitamin D on testosterone in the context of obesity, in which controversial results have been raised. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and testosterone levels in young men with different grade of obesity. DESIGN AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 269 healthy young men with obesity (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2). Participants were divided into two groups based on their serum 25(OH)D levels (134 subjects with vitamin D sufficiency and 135 participants with vitamin D deficiency, according to the 50th percentile of 25(OH)D). Serum 25(OH)D and sex hormones have been measured. The relationships between 25(OH)D, sex hormones, and obesity grades were investigated with linear and binary logistic regression analyses, as well as mediation analysis. RESULTS Compared to the 25(OH)D sufficiency group, total and free testosterone levels were found to be decreased, whereas serum androstenedione levels were increased in the 25(OH)D deficiency group (p<0.05). Using multivariable lineal regression analyses, 25(OH)D was correlated with the majority of sex hormones (p<0.05). When mediation with BMI was performed, the direct effect between 25(OH)D and sex hormones disappeared, and only the indirect effect via BMI remained (demonstrating the importance of BMI). Furthermore, after controlling for age and smoking status, we discovered that total testosterone and SHBG were both significantly associated with 25(OH)D (p<0.05) in subjects with obesity type III. Using a mediation analysis, we discovered that BMI had a partial effect on the association between 25(OH)D and total testosterone levels in morbidly obese participants, indicating that a direct association between 25(OH)D and total testosterone levels, and that BMI partially mediated this association. CONCLUSIONS Serum 25(OH)D is associated with total testosterone levels in only those subjects with morbid obesity, suggesting a specific benefit in severe cases of obesity. Additional research is needed to elucidate possible common mechanisms.
