Abstract
This study aimed to assess and compare the immediate stress and psychological impact experienced by people with and without psychiatric illnesses during the peak of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic with strict lockdown measures. Seventy-six psychiatric patients and 109 healthy control subjects were recruited from Chongqing, China and completed a survey on demographic data, physical symptoms during the past 14 days and a range of psychiatric symptoms using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). IES-R measures PTSD symptoms in survivorship after an event. DASS-21 is based on tripartite model of psychopathology that comprise a general distress construct with distinct characteristics. The mean IES-R, DASS-21 anxiety, depression and stress subscale and ISI scores were higher in psychiatric patients than healthy controls (p < 0.001). Serious worries about their physical health, anger and impulsivity and intense suicidal ideation were significantly higher in psychiatric patients than healthy controls (p < 0.05). More than one-third of psychiatric patients might fulfil the diagnostic criteria post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). More than one-quarter of psychiatric patients suffered from moderately severe to severe insomnia. Respondents who reported no change, poor or worse physical health status and had a psychiatric illness were significantly more likely to have higher mean IES-R, DASS depression, anxiety and stress subscale scores and ISI scores (p < 0.05). This study confirms the severity of negative psychological impact on psychiatric patients during the COVID-19 epidemic with strict lockdown measures. Understanding the psychological impact on psychiatric patients during the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to provide insight into how to develop a new immunopsychiatry service. Further research is required to compare pro-inflammatory cytokines between psychiatric patients and healthy controls during the pandemic.

Abstract
Objectives: A great amount of interest has been invested in the understanding of public stigma toward persons with depression. However, published studies were mostly restricted to the study of stigma toward a young person with depression. This study was aimed to compare public stigma towards a younger and an older person with depression among a sample of the Jewish adult population in Israel.Method: Computerized phone interviews were conducted with 393 participants (aged 18+) who were randomly presented with one of two vignettes describing a younger or an older person with depression.Results: Overall, the participants reported low levels of stigma towards a person with depression. With the exception of pity, the younger person elicited higher levels of stigmatic attributions in all dimensions (cognitive, emotional, and behavioral) in comparison to the older person. Regardless of the age of the person with depression, only emotional reactions - but not cognitive attributions-were associated with discriminatory attributions.Conclusion: Our findings stress the importance of paying attention to the age of the person with depression in anti-stigma campaigns and studies to better understand the meaning and consequences of depression-stigma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND New insights have recently been gained into ketamine's potential anti-depressive effects. However, the mechanisms that underlie ketamine's rapid antidepressant activity still remain a mystery. METHODS We used a rat prenatal stress (PS) model of depression to explore the functional role of mGluR5 in ketamine's rapidly induced antidepressant activity. Effects of the antidepressants imipramine, escitalopram, ketamine, and fluoxetine were compared. AAV-mGluR5 and AAV-shRNA-mGluR5 were constructed to overexpress and knockdown hippocampal mGluR5 respectively. RESULTS This study shows that mGluR5, which is associated with depression-like behaviors, is increased in susceptible rats exposed to prenatal stress, and that ketamine could significantly alleviate these stress-induced effects. RU-38486 down-regulated expression of mGluR5 and up-regulated NR1. MPEP and CHPG also altered expression of both mGluR5 and NR1. Notably, hippocampal overexpression of mGluR5 in wild type rats changed NR1 and PSD-95 expression and induced depression-like behavior that could be blocked by ketamine activity. Further, knockdown of hippocampal mGluR5 in PS-S rats restored normal levels of mGluR5, NR1, and PSD-95, and alleviated depression-like behavior. LIMITATIONS The entire rat hippocampus was used for this study, but the role of mGluR5 may vary by sub-region. CONCLUSION These results suggest that hippocampal mGluR5 may play a key role in mediating the rapid antidepressant effects of ketamine in a prenatal stress model of depression. This provides a novel therapeutic target in clinical treatment of depression.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE The magnitude and variability of cytokine alterations in depression are not clear. OBJECTIVE To perform an up to date meta-analysis of mean differences of immune markers in depression, and to quantify and test for evidence of heterogeneity in immune markers in depression by conducting a meta-analysis of variability to ascertain whether only a sub-group of patients with depression show evidence of inflammation. DATA SOURCES Studies that reported immune marker levels in peripheral blood in patients with depression and matched healthy controls in the MEDLINE database from inception to August 29th 2018 were examined. STUDY SELECTION Case-control studies that reported immune marker levels in peripheral blood in patients with depression and healthy controls were selected. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Means and variances (SDs) were extracted for each measure to calculate effect sizes, which were combined using multivariate meta-analysis. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Hedges g was used to quantify mean differences. Relative variability of immune marker measurements in patients compared with control groups as indexed by the coefficient of variation ratio (CVR). RESULTS A total of 107 studies that reported measurements from 5,166 patients with depression and 5,083 controls were included in the analyses. Levels of CRP (g = 0.71; 95%CI: 0.50-0.92; p < 0.0001); IL-3 (g = 0.60; 95%CI: 0.31-0.89; p < 0.0001); IL-6 (g = 0.61; 95%CI: 0.39-0.82; p < 0.0001); IL-12 (g = 1.18; 95%CI: 0.74-1.62; p < 0.0001); IL-18 (g = 1.97; 95%CI: 1.00-2.95; p < 0.0001); sIL-2R (g = 0.71; 95%CI: 0.44-0.98; p < 0.0001); and TNFα (g = 0.54; 95%CI: 0.32-0.76; p < 0.0001) were significantly higher in patients with depression. These findings were robust to a range of potential confounds and moderators. Mean-scaled variability, measured as CVR, was significantly lower in patients with depression for CRP (CVR = 0.85; 95%CI: 0.75-0.98; p = 0.02); IL-12 (CVR = 0.61; 95%CI: 0.46-0.80; p < 0.01); and sIL-2R (CVR = 0.85; 95%CI: 0.73-0.99; p = 0.04), while it was unchanged for IL-3, IL-6, IL-18, and TNF α. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Depression is confirmed as a pro-inflammatory state. Some of the inflammatory markers elevated in depression, including CRP and IL-12, show reduced variability in patients with depression, therefore supporting greater homogeneity in terms of an inflammatory phenotype in depression. Some inflammatory marker elevations in depression do not appear due to an inflamed sub-group, but rather to a right shift of the immune marker distribution.

Abstract
Background Depression is a mental health disorder present in medical students that foster cumulative disadvantages throughout life and that may compromise patient care. Yet, in Mexico there is a dearth of research concerning prediction models for depression in this population. Methods The aim of this cross-sectional study was to develop and test a path model analysis of depression in 103 freshmen Mexican medical students ages 18–23 years old selected non-randomly. Anxiety, emotion dysregulation, and coping skills were used as factors influencing depression. Mexican self-report scales were used as assessment measures. Results Main results showed that anxiety and emotion dysregulation had a significant direct influence on depression. Emotion dysregulation had a significant direct effect on coping skills and anxiety, while anxiety had a significant direct effect on problem drinking and alcohol problems. Fit indexes obtained indicate an excellent adjustment to data. R square indicates that 53.7% of the variance in depression can be explained by this model. Limitations The results are exploratory rather than confirmatory. The sample size was not large enough and the research focused on only Mexican freshmen medical students. Other factors associated to depression in medical students were not considered. Conclusions The current research provides unique findings in terms of a model of depression in Mexican medical students through which it is possible to design and implement interventions that decrease depression, thus positively affecting their well-being, their future careers as medical doctors and their abilities to serve the society adequately, especially in the context of Latin American cities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the literature on the possible immunologic pathophysiology of psychiatric manifestations of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). METHODS A systematic search on PubMed was conducted. English studies with full text availability that investigated the correlation between blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction, intrathecal synthesis of antibodies, antibodies, cytokines, chemokines, metalloproteinases, complement and psychiatric NPSLE manifestations in adults were included. RESULTS Both transient BBB-dysfunction with consequent access of antibodies to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and intrathecal synthesis of antibodies could occur in psychiatric NPSLE. Anti-phospholipid antibodies, anti-NMDA antibodies and anti-ribosomal protein p antibodies seem to mediate concentration dependent neuronal dysfunction. Interferon-α may induce microglial engulfment of neurons, direct neuronal damage and production of cytokines and chemokines in psychiatric NPSLE. Several cytokines, chemokines and matrix metalloproteinase-9 may contribute to the pathophysiology of psychiatric NPSLE by attracting and activating Th1-cells and B-cells. DISCUSSION This potential pathophysiology may help understand NPSLE and may have implications for the diagnostic management and therapy of psychiatric NPSLE. However, the presented pathophysiological model is based on correlations between potential immunologic etiologies and psychiatric NPSLE that remain questionable. More research on this topic is necessary to further elucidate the pathophysiology of NPSLE.

Abstract
Depression represents the number one cause of disability worldwide and is often fatal. Inflammatory processes have been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression. It is now well established that dysregulation of both the innate and adaptive immune systems occur in depressed patients and hinder favorable prognosis, including antidepressant responses. In this review, we describe how the immune system regulates mood and the potential causes of the dysregulated inflammatory responses in depressed patients. However, the proportion of never-treated major depressive disorder (MDD) patients who exhibit inflammation remains to be clarified, as the heterogeneity in inflammation findings may stem in part from examining MDD patients with varied interventions. Inflammation is likely a critical disease modifier, promoting susceptibility to depression. Controlling inflammation might provide an overall therapeutic benefit, regardless of whether it is secondary to early life trauma, a more acute stress response, microbiome alterations, a genetic diathesis, or a combination of these and other factors.

Abstract
Reduced haemodynamic response in the frontotemporal cortices of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) has been demonstrated using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Most notably, changes in cortical oxy-haemoglobin during a Japanese phonetic fluency task can differentiate psychiatric patients from healthy controls (HC). However, this paradigm has not been validated in the English language. Therefore, the present work aimed to distinguish patients with MDD from HCs, using haemodynamic response measured during an English letter fluency task. One hundred and five HCs and 105 patients with MDD took part in this study. NIRS signals during the verbal fluency task (VFT) was acquired using a 52-channel system, and changes in oxy-haemoglobin in the frontal and temporal regions were quantified. Depression severity, psychosocial functioning, pharmacotherapy and psychiatric history were noted. Patients with MDD had smaller changes in oxy-haemoglobin in the frontal and temporal cortices than HCs. In both regions of interest, oxy-haemoglobin was not associated with any of the clinical variables studied. 75.2% and 76.5% of patients with MDD were correctly classified using frontal and temporal region oxy-haemoglobin, respectively. Haemodynamic response measured by fNIRS during an English letter fluency task is a promising biomarker for MDD.

Abstract
Despite studies investigating the effect of yoga on cognitive and motor functioning in older adults, the effect on dual-task performance and motor learning and the specific mechanisms underlying the positive effect of yoga remain unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of yoga on cognition, balance under single- and dual-task conditions, and motor learning. The potential role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in induced improvement was also explored. Participants aged 60-79 years were randomized to either a control group (n = 15) or a yoga group (n = 18) for a 10-week period. The yoga group received 90-min duration yoga classes two times per week. Changes in cognition, balance under single- and dual-task conditions, and learning fast and accurate reaching movements were assessed. Yoga practice decreased (P < 0.05) the velocity vector of the center of pressure under single- and dual-task conditions, whereas no changes in cognitive performance were observed. Although reaction and movement times during learning were decreased in both groups (P < 0.05), a faster reaction time (P < 0.05) and shorter movement time (P < 0.05) were observed in the yoga group than in the control group. Significant moderate relationships (P < 0.05) between changes in BDNF levels and functional improvements were observed. Thus, 10 weeks of yoga practice resulted in improved balance and learning in the speed-accuracy motor task that were mediated by increased BDNF levels, but had no impact on cognition in older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of insomnia symptoms among Chinese adolescents and young adults affected by the outbreak of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). METHODS This cross-sectional study included Chinese adolescents and young adults 12-29 years of age during part of the COVID-19 epidemic period. An online survey was used to collect demographic data, and to assess recognition of COVID-19, insomnia, depression, and anxiety symptoms using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) questionnaires, respectively. The Social Support Rate Scale was used to assess social support. RESULTS Among 11,835 adolescents and young adults included in the study, the prevalence of insomnia symptoms during part of the COVID-19 epidemic period was 23.2%. Binomial logistic regression analysis revealed that female sex and residing in the city were greater risk factors for insomnia symptoms. Depression or anxiety were risk factors for insomnia symptoms; however, social support, both subjective and objective, was protective factors against insomnia symptoms. Furthermore, anxiety and depression symptoms were mediators of social support and insomnia symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Results of this study revealed a high prevalence of sleep problems among adolescents and young adults during the COVID-19 epidemic, especially senior high school and college students, which were negatively associated with students' projections of trends in COVID-19. The adverse impact of COVID-19 was a risk factor for insomnia symptoms; as such, the government must devote more attention to sleep disorders in this patient population while combating COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Over half of the world's refugee population are under the age of 18 years. This systematic review aims to summarize the current body of evidence for the prevalence of mental illness in child and adolescent refugee populations. METHOD Eight electronic databases, gray literature, and Google Scholar were searched for articles from 1 January 2003 to 5 February 2018. Strict inclusion criteria regarding the diagnosis of mental illness were imposed. Study quality was assessed using a template according to study design, and study heterogeneity using the I2 statistic. Random effects meta-analyses results were presented given heterogeneity among studies. The protocol for this systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42016046349). RESULTS Eight studies were eligible, involving 779 child and adolescent refugees and asylum seekers, with studies conducted in 5 countries. The overall prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was 22.71% (95% CI 12.79-32.64), depression 13.81% (95% CI 5.96-21.67), and anxiety disorders 15.77% (95% CI 8.04-23.50). Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was 8.6% (1.08-16.12) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) was 1.69% (95% CI -0.78 to 4.16). Because of the high heterogeneity, further subgroup analyses were conducted. CONCLUSION Refugee and asylum seeker children have high rates of PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Without the serious commitment by health and resettlement services to provide early support to promote mental health, these findings suggest that a high proportion of refugee children are at risk for educational disadvantage and poor social integration in host communities, potentially affecting their life course.

Abstract
The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression-10 (CES-D-10) scale is known for its good psychometric properties in measuring depressive symptoms, however, some researchers question its applicability across various settings. This study explored the factor structure of the CES-D-10 in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This cross-sectional survey consisted of 16,723 university students across 27 LMICs that completed self-report instruments assessing socio-demographic information and depressive symptoms using the CES-D-10. Data analysis included: exploratory factor analysis, item response theory and differential item functioning. Results indicate that a two-factor model (depressive affect and positive affect) had the best fit for this population and accounted for 52% of the total observed variance with an internal consistency, α = .77 for the depressive affect items and α = .57 for the positive affect items. The graded response model (GRM), however, indicated that the depressive affect factor had a good fit, unlike the positive affect factor. The depressive affect factor was found to consistently model depression for females better than males. Relative to their Asian counterparts, African, Caribbean and South American participants of similar depressive affect responded differently on all items of the depressive affect factor. The depressive affect factor seems most ideal for LMICs and shows gender and cross-cultural variability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter gene promoter region (5-HTTLPR) gene polymorphism and post-stroke depression (PSD). METHODS We searched the CNKI, China Science and Technology Journal, China WanFang, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for studies of the relationship between 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and PSD. Data were evaluated using Stata software. RESULTS The L allele was significantly related to the S allele (OR = 0.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.49-0.65). The dominant genotype LL + LS was related to SS (OR = 0.48, 95%CI 0.39-0.59), the recessive genotype LL was related to LS + SS (OR = 0.39, 95%CI: 0.30-0.51), the homozygous genotype LL was related to SS (OR = 0.24, 95%CI 0.18-0.33), and the heterozygous genotype LS was related to SS (OR = 0.55, 95 CI 0.44-0.68). All the differences were significant. Ethnicity subgroup analysis showed significant differences among the five genotypes in both Asians and Caucasians. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) subgroup analysis showed that, after removal of a non-HWE-conforming control group, all five genotypes were significant and genotypes LL, LS + LL, and LS and L allele had beneficial effects on recovery from PSD. CONCLUSION 5-HTTLPR gene polymorphism is strongly associated with PSD, and the LL, LS + LL, and LS genotypes and L allele may protect against this condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In Western populations, patients with depression die 10-25 years prematurely compared to controls, mainly due to lifestyle-related diseases. Tobacco smoking, excessive alcohol intake, poor diets and physical inactivity are among the major contributors to disease comorbidities. The objective of this research is to assess the dietary and lifestyle behaviours for Bahraini patients with depression and to determine their associations with different medical comorbidities. METHODS A case-control study was conducted from March to December 2019. A sample of 96 diagnosed patients with depression was recruited from the Psychiatric Hospital/Bahrain, and 96 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited from primary health centres. Assessment of anthropometrics, dietary and alcohol intakes, tobacco smoking and physical activity levels were undertaken for both cases and controls. National electronic medical records were reviewed retrospectively for medical comorbidities for the recruited cases. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify associations between lifestyle behaviours and medical comorbidities after controlling for confounding factors. RESULTS Patients with depression reported higher intakes of energy and energy-yielding macronutrients (e.g., carbohydrates, protein, and fat); three-fold higher rates of tobacco smoking; and significantly lower levels of physical activity. Cases appeared to be at a doubled risk for developing obesity, diabetes type 2, hypertension, and musculoskeletal disorders. The risk for cardiovascular problems was similar for cases and controls. CONCLUSIONS Poor dietary intakes, increased prevalence of smoking, and low levels of physical activity were evident in patients with depression in Bahrain; these factors were associated with some medical comorbidities.

Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that the Corona Virus (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the psychological symptoms of ordinary Chinese citizens during the Level I Emergency Response throughout China. From January 31 to February 2 2020, an online questionnaire, Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) was designed, and differences in GSI T-scores among subgroups were examined by ANOVA. Based on a cut-off point of the GSI T-scores of 63, the overall sample was divided into high and low-risk groups. of the 1,060 participants investigated in China, more than 70% of them have moderate and higher level of psychological symptoms specifically elevated scores for obsessive compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, phobic anxiety, and psychoticism. There were no significant differences between males and females. Those who were of over 50 years old, had an undergraduate education and below, were divorced or widowed, and agricultural workers had significantly more symptoms. However, significantly more minors and medical staff were in the high-risk group. These results show that COVID-19 has a significant adverse socio-psychological influence on ordinary citizens. Therefore, governments should equip psychological health departments and pay attention to the people who are in high-risk groups, providing psychological interventions and assistance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a silent health problem that can lead to severe and sometimes fatal outcomes if individuals are not diagnosed and treated properly; this is particularly true in populations with limited education, low economic status and several barriers to accessing health services, such as the hill tribe people in Thailand. METHODS This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the prevalence of and factors associated with depression among hill tribe individuals aged 30 years and over. A validated questionnaire and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used for data collection in an interview format in a private and confidential room. Logistic regression was used to detect the associations of variables with depression at a significance level of α = 0.05. RESULTS A total of 2,552 participants were recruited for the analysis; 65.9% were females, 79.9% were married, 35.8% were aged 50 years and over, and 54.2% were Buddhist. The majority were uneducated (76.7%), were agriculturalists (48.4%), and had a low family income (71.2%). The overall prevalence of depression was 12.0%. In the multivariate analysis, eight variables were found to be significantly associated with depression among hill tribe adults aged 30 years and over in Thailand. Being female, 50 years or older, married, and Christian; living with a relative; smoking; using opium; and having moderate and high stress levels were associated with depression. CONCLUSION Effective public health interventions should be considered to reduce the burden of depression in the hill tribe population by focusing on individuals who are female, 50 years or older, married, Christian, and stressed and those who abuse substances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pandemic of Corona Virus (COVID-19) hit India recently; and the associated uncertainty is increasingly testing psychological resilience of the masses. When the global focus has mostly been on testing, finding a cure and preventing transmission; people are going through a myriad of psychological problems in adjusting to the current lifestyles and fear of the disease. Since there is a severe dearth of researches on this issue, we decided to conduct an online survey to evaluate its psychological impact. METHODS From 26th to 29th March an online survey (FEEL-COVID) was conducted using principles of snowballing, and by invitation through text messages to participate. The survey collected data on socio-demographic and clinical variables related to COVID-19 (based on the current knowledge); along with measuring psychological impact with the help of Impact of Event-revised (IES-R) scale. RESULTS There were a total of 1106 responses from around 64 cities in the country. Out of these 453 responses had at least one item missing; and were excluded from the analysis. The mean age of the respondents was around 41 years with a male female ratio of 3:1 and around 22% respondents were health care professionals. Overall approximately one third of respondents had significant psychological impact (IES-R score > 24). Higher psychological impact was predicted with younger age, female gender and comorbid physical illness. Presence of physical symptoms and contact history predicted higher psychological impact, but did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION During the initial stages of COVID-19 in India, almost one-third respondents had a significant psychological impact. This indicates a need for more systematic and longitudinal assessment of psychological needs of the population, which can help the government in formulating holistic interventions for affected individuals.

Abstract
The current study aimed to determine the level of fear of COVID-19 among Indian residents using the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) and compare it with demographic variables. This cross-sectional online survey conducted among the Indian population employed a convenient snowball sampling technique. Age, gender, marital status, educational qualifications, health care worker status and state of residence were the demographic details (six items) collected. The seven-item FCV-19S was used to assess fear regarding COVID−19 on a five-point Likert scale. The mean score for the responses was calculated and compared based on demographic variables. A comparison of low and high levels of fear and a multiple logistic regression analysis of levels of fear with demographic variables were conducted. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The study population comprised 45.6% (683) males and 54.4% (816) females, with approximately 68% belonging to the age group of 20–40 years. The overall mean score for the questionnaire was 18.00 + 5.68. A significantly higher number of the study population reported low fear (54.8%). Only gender (p = 0.08) and health care worker status (p = 0.02) revealed a significant difference based on the level of fear. Females, married status, lower educational status and being a health care worker displayed significantly higher odds for high level of fear compared to their respective counterparts in this study population. The findings of this study may help to identify the groups most at risk and formulate tailor-made intervention strategies to ensure their optimal health in this time of global crisis.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of intolerance of uncertainty, depression, anxiety, and stress in the relationship between the fear of COVID-19 and positivity. The participants consisted of 960 individuals, including 663 females (69.1%) and 297 males (30.9%). The age of the participants ranged between 18 and 76 (29.74 ± 9.64). As a result of the correlation analysis, a positive relationship was found between fear of COVID-19 and intolerance of uncertainty, depression, anxiety, and stress, and a negative relationship was determined between the fear of COVID-19 and positivity. The result of the analysis for the study model indicated that there was a mediating role of intolerance of uncertainty, depression, anxiety, and stress in the relationship between the fear of COVID-19 and positivity. Eliminating uncertainty from the fear of COVID-19 will contribute to reducing depression, anxiety and stress, and increasing positivity.

Abstract
It has been three months since the first confirmed case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Hong Kong, and people now have a more complete picture of the extent of the pandemic. Therefore, it is time to evaluate the impacts of COVID-19 on mental health. The current population-based study aimed to evaluate the depression and anxiety of people in Hong Kong during the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents were randomly recruited and asked to complete a structured questionnaire, including the patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7), the global rating of change scale and items related to COVID-19. Of the 500 respondents included in the study, 19% had depression (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10) and 14% had anxiety (GAD score ≥ 10). In addition, 25.4% reported that their mental health had deteriorated since the pandemic. Multiple logistic regression analysis found that not experiencing the SARS outbreak in 2003, being worried about being infected by COVID-19, being bothered by having not enough surgical masks and being bothered by not being able to work from home were associated with a poorer mental health status. Psychological support, such as brief, home-based psychological interventions, should be provided to citizens during the pandemic.

Abstract
(1) Background: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global public health emergency that has caused worldwide concern. Vast resources have been allocated to control the pandemic and treat patients. However, little attention has been paid to the adverse impact on mental health or effective mitigation strategies to improve mental health. (2) Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the adverse impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on Chinese college students’ mental health, understand the underlying mechanisms, and explore feasible mitigation strategies. (3) Methods: During the peak time of the COVID-19 outbreak in China, we conducted longitudinal surveys of sixty-six college students. Structured questionnaires collected information on demographics, physical activity, negative emotions, sleep quality, and aggressiveness level. A mixed-effect model was used to evaluate associations between variables, and the mediating effect of sleep quality was further explored. A generalized additive model was used to determine the dose-response relationships between the COVID-19 death count, physical activity, and negative emotions. (4) Results: The COVID-19 death count showed a direct negative impact on general sleep quality (β = 1.37, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.55, 2.19) and reduced aggressiveness (β = −6.57, 95% CI: −12.78, −0.36). In contrast, the COVID-19 death count imposed not a direct but an indirect impact on general negative emotions (indirect effect (IE) = 0.81, p = 0.012), stress (IE = 0.40, p < 0.001), and anxiety (IE = 0.27, p = 0.004) with sleep quality as a mediator. Moreover, physical activity directly alleviated general negative emotions (β = −0.12, 95% CI: −0.22, −0.01), and the maximal mitigation effect occurred when weekly physical activity was about 2500 METs. (5) Conclusions: (a) The severity of the COVID-19 outbreak has an indirect effect on negative emotions by affecting sleep quality. (b) A possible mitigation strategy for improving mental health includes taking suitable amounts of daily physical activity and sleeping well. (c) The COVID-19 outbreak has reduced people’s aggressiveness, probably by making people realize the fragility and preciousness of life.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder imposes a substantial disease burden worldwide, ranking as the third leading contributor to global disability. In spite of its ubiquity, classifying and treating depression has proven troublesome. One argument put forward to explain this predicament is the heterogeneity of patients diagnosed with the disorder. Recently, many areas of daily life have witnessed the surge of machine learning techniques, computational approaches to elucidate complex patterns in large datasets, which can be employed to make predictions and detect relevant clusters. Due to the multidimensionality at play in the pathogenesis of depression, it is suggested that machine learning could contribute to improving classification and treatment. In this paper, we investigated literature focusing on the use of machine learning models on datasets with clinical variables of patients diagnosed with depression to predict treatment outcomes or find more homogeneous subgroups. Identified studies based on best practices in the field are evaluated. We found 16 studies predicting outcomes (such as remission) and identifying clusters in patients with depression. The identified studies are mostly still in proof-of-concept phase, with small datasets, lack of external validation, and providing single performance metrics. Larger datasets, and models with similar variables present across these datasets, are needed to develop accurate and generalizable models. We hypothesize that harnessing natural language processing to obtain data 'hidden' in clinical texts might prove useful in improving prediction models. Besides, researchers will need to focus on the conditions to feasibly implement these models to support psychiatrists and patients in their decision-making in practice. Only then we can enter the realm of precision psychiatry.

Abstract
Background: Probiotics have been associated with the treatment of depression and anxiety. However, the results reported in the literature have been inconsistent, and no meta-analysis specifically reported probiotics used on participants with varying levels of emotional state. Methods: This meta-analysis aimed to study the effectiveness of probiotics on anxious or depressive symptomatology for participants under stress conditions or with a depressive or anxiety disorder diagnosis. Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched through December 2019 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The primary outcomes were depression and anxiety scores. Main inclusion criteria: RCTs of probiotics for participants with a mood or emotional disorder diagnosis or under stress situations; and all participants were adults (age ≥16 years); Assessed by the modified Jadad assessment scale found seven high-quality studies and three low-quality studies. Results: Ten clinical trials (n = 685 total participants) were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. All studies were assessed as low or moderate risk of bias. The meta-analysis showed that probiotics could significantly reduce the depression scale for patients with anxiety and depression, and healthy participants under stress. However, there was no significant difference between the probiotics and placebo groups in the reduction of patient anxiety scores, even if they are depressive or anxious patients or healthy participants under stress. Subgroup analysis revealed that probiotics had significant effect on depressive symptoms just in patients with depression, and no significant change in anxiety in patients, and no improvement in participant performance under stress. Conclusions: Probiotics could alleviate depressive symptoms in patients with a depression diagnosis or depression scores also in anxiety disorder diagnosis, and suggesting that probiotics may be adjunct therapies for mood or emotional disorders. Therefore, it is essential that probiotics could be more involved in the treatment of patients with depression in the future. The evidence of probiotics successfully treating depression is still insufficient, and more high-quality studies on patients with depression are still needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Substantial uncertainty exists about the prevalence of depression in patients with gastric cancer. We aimed to summarise the global and regional pooled prevalence of depression among patients with gastric cancer. METHOD Up to February 2020, we searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of science (ISI) and PsychINFO to identify published studies on the prevalence of depression among patients with gastric cancer. The study selection procedure was in accordance to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We estimated the prevalence of depression in gastric cancer patients using a random-effect pooled estimate analysis approach with subgroup analysis based on WHO regions, and methods of depression measurement. RESULTS Totally, we retrieved 3781 studies from the previously mentioned databases, of which 18 (12 cross-sectional and 6 cohort studies in design) met the eligibility criteria, which were published from 2001 to 2017 in different regions. The total sample size of the included studied contained 4709 patients with gastric cancer, of which 1885 cases were diagnosed with depression. The pooled prevalence of depression among gastric cancer patients was 37%(95% CI: 26% to 48%). Subgroup analysis showed that the highest prevalence of depression was in Eastern Mediterranean (pooled prevalence=42%; 95% CI: 18% to 65%) followed by the Western Pacific region (pooled prevalence=40%;95% CI: 26% to 54%). The results indicated a significant heterogeneity (I 2=98.8%,P<0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings indicated that depression is high among gastric cancer patients. The findings suggest health authorities to provide specially designed social and psychological supportive care services, including screening for depression, among such patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND Co-existence of depression and anxiety can be associated with severe detrimental consequences to the physical, mental and social wellbeing of the affected populations. This study was conducted to determine prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms among Palestinian medical students and to investigate associations between sociodemographic factors of the students with depressive and anxiety symptoms. METHODS This study was conducted in a cross-sectional observational design using a questionnaire in the period between September 2018 and April 2019 in a major university in the West Bank of Palestine. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The questionnaire also collected the sociodemographic characteristics of the students. Reliability of the questionnaire was tested using the test re-test method. A total of 425 medical students were invited to participate in the study. RESULTS Of those invited, 286 students completed the questionnaire, giving a response rate of 67.3%. More than half (56.6%) of the students had minimal depression, 20.3% had mild depression, 14.0% had moderate depression, 9.1% had severe depression, 23.4% had no anxiety, 29.7% had mild to moderate anxiety, 25.5% had moderate to severe anxiety, and 21.3% had severe anxiety. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that academic stage (p-value < 0.01), Grade Point Average (p-value < 0.01), mental health status (p-value < 0.001), ever attempted suicide (p-value < 0.05), and religious commitment (p-value < 0.01) were predictors of BDI-II scores. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that academic stage (p-value < 0.05) and mental health status (p-value < 0.001) were predictors of BAI scores. CONCLUSIONS Depressive and anxiety symptoms were prevalent among Palestinian medical students in a major university in the West Bank of Palestine. Interventions might be designed to improve self-rated mental health of medical students in their academic years, ameliorate study conditions, and provision of counseling services to improve spirituality might be effective in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety among medical students in Palestine. Future studies are still needed to investigate if these interventions could be useful in reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms among Palestinian medical students.

The Main Determinants for Suicidal Ideation in a Romanian Cohort of Multiple Sclerosis Patients. Behav Neurol 2020; 2020:2594702. Abstract
Objective To determine the prevalence of suicidal concerns (SC) in a large multiple sclerosis (MS) patient group and to assess the major determinants that are implicated in their occurrence. Methods A total of 349 patients were included in the study. They completed a survey about their demographic characteristics, psycho-socio-economic data, and disease-related information. Their disability level was assessed using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) based on the neurological examination performed by the same doctor for every patient and the SC were documented with the Beck Depression Inventory-II questionnaire. Results The study included 112 men and 237 women, with a mean age around 42 years old. Suicidal thoughts were more frequent in men, while suicidal intentions in women. Positive correlations were found between SC and depression, EDSS, total number of relapses, disease duration, and level of education. From the EDSS functional scores, only the pyramidal score and the cerebellar score presented a significant correlation with SC. None of the patients with clinically isolated syndrome had SC. The type of disease-modifying therapy, marital and occupational status, and the presence of children did not influence the presence of SC. Conclusions The prevalence of SC is higher in patients with MS compared to the general population. Their occurrence is mostly influenced by the disease itself (duration, relapses, acquired disability) and also by depression and lack of education.

Abstract
Background Nailfold capillaroscopy is a noninvasive technique to recognize peripheral microangiopathy, which is an important feature in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The aims of the present study were to investigate the prevalence of nailfold capillaroscopy (NFC) changes in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE), find out patterns of these changes, and correlate findings with clinical and laboratory parameters. Methods Forty-nine patients with SLE, all meeting the 1997 revised ACR criteria for SLE classification, and 30 healthy controls were included. A digital video camera was used to capture nailfold capillary images. Computerized image processing was used for analysis. Results Different abnormal NFC changes were observed with abnormal morphology, the increased diameter and abnormal loop densities in 55.1%, 93.9%, and 26.5% of the patients, respectively. No statistically significant differences were depicted between capillaroscopy with age, gender, autoantibodies (APLs, anti-ds DNA), antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, thrombotic angiopathy, renal function tests (Bun, Cr), and abnormal urine analysis. However, a significant correlation was found between the branched pattern and the CNS involvement group (P value <0.03). Conclusions Different abnormal NFC changes are quite common among patients with SLE, and nailfold capillaroscopy is an effective method to monitor such changes. Treatment strategies may change in the branched pattern of nailfold capillaroscopy due to CNS involvement.

Depression and Uptake of Oral Anticoagulation Therapy in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Danish Nationwide Cohort Study. Med Care 2020; 58:216-224. Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is a highly important preventive intervention, perhaps especially in those with comorbid depression, who have a worse prognosis. However, OAT may pose particular challenges in depressed patients. OBJECTIVES To assess whether AF patients with depression have lower OAT uptake. METHODS This nationwide register-based 2005-2016 cohort study of all Danes with AF and OAT indication (CHA2DS2VASc stroke risk score ≥2) assessed OAT initiation within 90 days in those with incident AF (N=147,162) and OAT prevalence in those with prevalent AF (N=192,656). The associations of depression with both outcomes were estimated in regression analyses with successive adjustment for socioeconomic characteristics and somatic and psychiatric comorbidity. RESULTS Comorbid depression was significantly associated with lower frequency of OAT initiation in incident AF patients {adjusted proportion differences (aPDs): -6.6% [95% confidence interval (CI), -7.4 to -5.9]} and lower prevalence of OAT [aPD: -4.2% (95% CI, -4.7 to -3.8)] in prevalent AF patients. Yet, the OAT uptake increased substantially during the period, particularly in depressed patients [aPD for OAT prevalence in 2016: -0.8% (95% CI, -1.6 to -0.0)]. CONCLUSIONS Comorbid depression was associated with a significantly lower OAT uptake in patients with AF, which questions whether depressed patients receive sufficient support to manage this consequential cardiac condition. However, a substantial increase in the overall OAT uptake and a decrease of the depression-associated deficit in OAT were seen over the period during which OAT was developed through the introduction of new oral anticoagulation therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression is a common mental disorder in the elderly population, which significantly impacts their quality of life. However, correct estimates of its magnitude are not available in the elderly in India. The present systematic review and meta-analysis would attempt to estimate the prevalence of depression using diagnostic instruments among elderly persons aged 60 years and above. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Searches will be performed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL and PsycINFO. Community-based cross-sectional and cohort studies (2001 to September 2019) reporting the prevalence of depression in the elderly, using diagnostic instruments will be included. Studies conducted among chronic disease patients, in-hospital patients and special groups such as with disaster-stricken populations, and studies reporting the only one or two subcategories of depression, will be excluded. Disagreements in study selection and data abstraction will be resolved by consensus and arbitration by a third reviewer. AXIS critical appraisal tool will be used for quality assessment of individual studies. Findings of eligible studies will be pooled using fixed-effects or random-effects meta-analysis whichever is appropriate. Heterogeneity between studies will be examined by Cochran's Q test and quantified by I² statistic. A cumulative meta-analysis will be used to detect temporal trends in the prevalence of depression and the effect of poor-quality studies on the pooled estimate. Publication bias will be assessed by visual inspection of funnel plots and the Egger test. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical approval will be needed because it will be a systematic review. Data from previously published studies will be retrieved and analysed. Findings will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed publication in a scientific journal and conferences. Antidepressants of different classes cause distinct behavioral and brain pro- and anti-inflammatory changes in mice submitted to an inflammatory model of depression. Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressed patients present increased plasma levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and neuroinflammatory alterations. Here, we determined the neuroimmune effects of different classes of ADs by using the LPS inflammatory model of depression. METHODS Male rats received amitriptyline (AMI) a tricyclic, S-citalopram (ESC) a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, tranylcypromine (TCP) a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, vortioxetine (VORT) a multimodal AD or saline for ten days. One-hour after the last AD administration, rats were exposed to LPS 0.83 mg/kg or saline and 24 h later were tested for depressive-like behavior. Plasma corticosterone, brain levels of nitrite, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, phospho-cAMP Response Element-Binding Protein (CREB) and nuclear factor (NF)-kB p 65 were determined. RESULTS LPS induced despair-like, impaired motivation/self-care behavior and caused anhedonia. All ADs prevented LPS-induced despair-like behavior, but only VORT rescued impaired self-care behavior. All ADs prevented LPS-induced increase in brain pro-inflammatory cytokines [interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6] and T-helper 1 cytokines [tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interferon-γ]. VORT increased striatal and hypothalamic IL-4 levels. All ADs prevented LPS-induced neuroendocrine alterations represented by increased levels of hypothalamic nitrite and plasma corticosterone response. VORT and ESC prevented LPS-induced increase in NF-kBp65 hippocampal expression, while ESC, TCP and VORT, but not IMI, prevented the alterations in phospho-CREB expression. LIMITATIONS LPS model helps to understand depression in a subset of depressed patients with immune activation. The levels of neurotransmitters were not determined. CONCLUSION This study provides new evidence for the immunomodulatory effects of ADs, and shows a possible superior anti-inflammatory profile of TCP and VORT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Early detection and proper management of mental illness can help to prevent severe deterioration. However, with limited financial and human resources of community mental health services, it is not practical to carry out all conventional screening tools simultaneously. In this study, we aimed to develop and validate a brief but comprehensive screening questionnaire for four common mental illnesses of the elderly. METHODS The brief screening for four mental illnesses of elderly (BS4MI-elderly) is a 14-item binary response questionnaire that covers dementia, depressive disorder, sleep disorder, and hwa-byung. To test validity, we compared conventional scale scores for three groups of participants classified using the BS4MI-elderly. The sensitivity, specificity, predictive value of positive test, likelihood ratio of positive test and internal consistency of the BS4MI-elderly were assessed. Finally, a correlation analysis between the BS4MI-elderly and general mental health scales was conducted. RESULTS A total of 254 participants aged over 65 years were recruited. The BS4MI-elderly showed moderate to high sensitivity for the test that distinguishes the normal group from the risk and disorder groups (dementia: 0.61, depressive disorder: 0.88, sleep disorder: 0.85, hwa-byung: 0.94) and high specificity for the test that distinguishes the disorder group from the normal and risk groups (dementia: 0.91, depressive disorder: 0.93, hwa-byung: 0.84, sleep disorder: 0.84). The BS4MI-elderly also exhibited good internal consistency and significant correlations with general mental health scales. CONCLUSION The BS4MI-elderly, a brief but comprehensive screening tool, could be a useful instrument for screening the elderly in community mental health services.

Abstract
RATIONALE The rapid-onset and long-lasting antidepressant properties of ketamine have prompted investigations into a variety of agents that target N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). According to the literature, ifenprodil (a GluN2B-containing NMDAR antagonist) can potentiate the antidepressant-like effects of certain antidepressant drugs in mice. Here, we report that a single injection of ifenprodil (3 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (i.p.)) was sufficient to provoke rapid antidepressant-like effects in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rats. Moreover, ifenprodil activated mTOR signaling and reversed the CUMS-induced elevation of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the hippocampus after acute administration. Unfortunately, in our study, ifenprodil had no influence on corticosterone levels in the plasma. Our data indicate that ifenprodil per se might exert antidepressant-like effects by modulating neuroplasticity and inflammatory processes rather than the typical hormonal factors affected by stressors. OBJECTIVES To explore the potential rapid antidepressant-like effects and mechanisms of ifenprodil, a GluN2B subunit-selective NMDAR antagonist. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in 3 separate experiments. In experiment 1, we used the forced swim test (FST) and sucrose preference test (SPT) to identify the rapid antidepressant-like effects of ifenprodil in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rats after acute administration. In experiment 2, we assessed neurochemical changes involved in synaptic plasticity within the hippocampus of CUMS rats. In experiment 3, we assessed the levels of corticosterone in the plasma and proinflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus in CUMS rats after ifenprodil treatment. RESULTS Ifenprodil rapidly ameliorated depressive-like behaviors in the FST and SPT, activated mTOR signaling, dephosphorylated eukaryotic elongation factor 2, enhanced BDNF expression, and promoted the synthesis of the synaptic protein GluA1 synthesis after acute administration. Moreover, ifenprodil reversed the CUMS-induced elevation of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the hippocampus after acute administration. Unfortunately, ifenprodil had no influence on corticosterone levels in the plasma in our study. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that ifenprodil per se might exert antidepressant-like effects through its effects on neuroplasticity and inflammatory processes rather than the typical hormonal factors affected by stressors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies evaluating the effects of depressive disorders in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are sparse. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether patients who have depressive disorders undergoing primary TKA have higher rates of (1) in-hospital lengths of stay (LOS), (2) readmission rates, (3) medical complications, (4) implant-related complications, and (5) costs of care. METHODS Patients with depressive disorders undergoing primary TKA were identified and matched to controls in a 1:5 ratio by age, sex, and comorbidities. The query yielded 138,076 patients who had (n = 23,061) or did not have (n = 115,015) depressive disorders. Primary outcomes analyzed included in-hospital LOS, 90-day readmission rates, 90-day medical complications, 2-year implant-related complications, and costs of care. A P value less than .003 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Patients who have depressive disorders had significantly longer in-hospital LOS (6.2 days vs 3.1 days; P < .0001). Additionally, study group patients had a higher incidence and odds of readmissions (15.5% vs 12.1%; odds ratio [OR], 1.33; P < 001), medical complications (5.0% vs 1.6%; OR, 3.34; P < .0001), and implant-related complications (3.3% vs 1.7%; OR; 1.97; P < .0001) Study group patients also incurred significantly higher day of surgery ($12,356.59 vs $10,487.71; P < .0001) and 90-day costs ($23,386.17 vs $22,201.43; P < .0001). CONCLUSION After adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities, this study demonstrated that patients who have depressive disorders have increased rates of in-hospital LOS, readmissions, complications, and cost. The study is useful in allowing orthopedists to adequately educate patients of potential complications which may occur.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although neuroimaging studies have shown volumetric reductions, such as the anterior cingulate, prefrontal cortices, and hippocampus in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), few studies have investigated the volume of or shape alterations in the subcortical regions and the brainstem. We hypothesized that medication-naïve female adult patients with MDD might present with shape and volume alterations in the subcortical regions, including the brainstem, compared to healthy controls (HCs). METHODS A total of 20 medication-naïve female patients with MDD and 21 age-matched female HCs, underwent 3D T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance scanning. We analyzed the volumes of each subcortical region and each brainstem region, including the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. We also performed surface-based vertex analyses on the subcortical areas and brainstem. RESULTS Female patients with MDD showed non-significant volumetric differences in the subcortical regions, whole brainstem, and each brainstem region compared to the HCs. However, in the surface-based vertex analyses, significant shape contractions were observed in both cerebellar peduncles located on the lateral wall of the posterior brainstem [threshold-free cluster enhancement, corrected for family-wise error (FWE) at p<0.05] in patients with MDD. CONCLUSION We revealed shape alterations in the posterior brainstem in female patients with MDD.

Abstract
Oxidative damage has been associated with the pathophysiology of depression. Macroalgae are equipped with antioxidant defense system to counteract the effects of free radicals. We explored the use of Malaysian Padina australis to attenuate high dose corticosterone-mediated oxidative damage in a cellular model mimicking depression. Fresh specimen of P. australis was freeze-dried and extracted sequentially with hexanes, ethyl acetate and ethanol. The extracts were screened for their phytochemical contents and antioxidant activities. Ethanol extract demonstrated the most potent antioxidant capacity and was selected for subsequent assays against high dose corticosterone of 600 µM-mediated oxidative damage in the rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. The corticosterone reduced the cell viability, glutathione (GSH) level, aconitase activity, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP); and increased the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and apoptosis. However, the extent of oxidative damage was reversed by 0.25–0.5 mg/mL ethanol extract suggesting a possible role of P. australis-based antioxidants in the mitochondrial defense against constant ROS generation and regulation of antioxidant pathway. The effects were similar to that of desipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant. Our findings indicate that P. australis can be developed as a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant to mitigate antidepressant-like effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE The number of patients with depressive disordered globally increased and affects people of all ages and countries and has a significant and negative impact on the quality of life (QoL). Depression if left untreated may lead to severe consequences. However, there are several types of effective treatments, but often patients need support from health staff to find suitable treatments. This study aims to examine the global trend of the publications as well as the development of interventions for depressing treatment. METHODS We download and analyzed 15,976 scientific research from the Web of Science from 1990 to 2018. A text mining based on Latent Dirichlet and terms' co-occurrence in titles and abstracts to identify hidden research topics and research landscapes. RESULTS We found that the number of papers related to non-pharmacological treatment (such as cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, or family and social support) to improve the QoL of patients with depression has increased. The number of papers on this serious health issue in low-middle income countries (LMICs) was not as high as in high-income countries (HICs). CONCLUSION It is necessary to increase support of the treatment of depression in LMICs as well as applied non-pharmacological interventions to patients with depression.

Abstract
Availability of reliable prognostic biomarkers that are also able to monitor preventive/therapeutic interventions in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is crucial. Cerebral brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) alterations were evidenced in Alzheimer's disease, but the value of blood BDNF in MCI is unclear, especially because of the incomplete/incorrect management of the numerous confounding factors unrelated to the disease. This study, applying a multidisciplinary methodological approach, aimed at clarifying whether blood BDNF can really mirror the cognitive symptoms of MCI, thus supporting the evaluation of clinical protocols' effectiveness as well as the definition of the conversion rate to dementia. Healthy elderly subjects (HE) and MCI patients were assessed for sociodemographic, neuropsychological, pharmacological, and lifestyle data, and plasma BDNF was measured (baseline); then, in the MCI cohort, the biomarker was tested in a comprehensive cognitive stimulation intervention (CS) as well as in a 2-year follow-up period. Plasma BDNF, cleansed from all the interfering factors, (1) did not discriminate HE and MCI patients; (2) in MCI patients reflected mood, social engagement, and subjective memory complaints but not cognition; (3) changed due to CS, although with no correlations to cognitive performances; and (4) predicted no functional deterioration. Our data indicate that the possible biased use of plasma BDNF in MCI is critically risky.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that there is a relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD), also simply known as "depression", and inflammatory processes. Selective serotonin inhibitors, such as fluoxetine, are used as a first-line treatment for depression, and it is hypothesized that its use can reduce levels of proinflammatory cytokines. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to enable a better understanding of how treatment with the antidepressant fluoxetine modulates inflammation, and the roles of the main cytokines in this process. Risk of bias (RoB) in the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment tool for Non-randomized studies (RoBANS). In the meta-analysis, standardized mean difference (SMD) was used as a summary statistic and grouped statistics using the generic inverse variation method in RevMan 5 with random effects model. Heterogeneous changes in cytokine levels were also evaluated from the SMD forest plot of individual studies. After analysis, we observed that fluoxetine was able to decrease TNF-α levels (SMD ± 0.90, 95% CI = 0.16, 1.165, Z ± 2.40, p = 0.02), but not change IL-6 levels (SMD ± 0.37, 95% CI = 0.21, 0.95, Z ± 1.25, p = 0.21).Fluoxetine acts by modulating neuroimmunology, and not only by acting only on the independent restoration of neurotransmission and neuroinflammation pathways.

Abstract
Background Disruption of biological rhythms has been linked to the pathophysiology of mental disorders. However, little is known regarding the rhythmicity of mood symptoms due to the lack of validated clinical questionnaires. A better understanding of the rhythmicity of mood symptoms can help identifying individuals whose severity of mood symptoms follows an altered circadian rhythm. The objective of this study was to validate the English version of the Mood Rhythm Instrument (MRhI), a self-reported measure of self-perceived rhythmicity of mood symptoms and behaviours, in a sample of the general population from Canada. Methods After the translation process, the final English version of the Mood Rhythm Instrument (MRhI-English) was applied on participants recruited at McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton campuses. Individuals were also asked to answer the Reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ). Results Four hundred one individuals completed the English version of the MRhI and the rMEQ. The MRhI-English presented a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.75. The factorial analysis grouped the MRhI-15 items in 3 factors (cognitive, affective and somatic), with affective items having a lower frequency of self-reported 24-h peaks. Comparison between sexes showed that women reported a higher frequency of daily peaks in irritability, anxiety, sadness and talking to friends, while men exhibited peaks more frequently in problem-solving, sexual arousal and motivation to exercise. Conclusions Our findings suggest that the English version of the MRhI displayed good internal consistency. Future directions will include the use of the MRhI instrument in individuals with mood disorders, aiming to provide a better understanding of the relationship between daily patterns of mood variability and mental health outcomes.

Abstract
Suicide is the most severe consequence of depression which has become a leading cause of disability and a global disease burden. Recent evidence indicates a central role of small molecules in the pathogenesis of depression and associated suicidal behaviors. However, there lacks a systemic exploration of small molecules in the development of depression-associated suicide, and it remains unclear how they affect an individual's behavior. In order to compare the metabonomic profiles between drug-naïve patients with depression-associated suicidal behaviors and healthy individuals, we conducted a systemic database search for studies of metabolic characteristics in depression-associated suicidal behavior. Manual data curation and statistical analysis and integration were performed in Excel. We further performed an enrichment analysis of signaling pathway prediction using the Reactome Pathway Analysis tool. We have identified 17 metabolites that expressed differently between drug-naïve patients with depression-associated suicidal behaviors and healthy controls. We have integrated these metabolites into biological signaling pathways and provided a visualized signaling network in depressed suicidal patients. We have revealed that "transport of small molecules", "disease", "metabolism" and "metabolism of proteins" were the most relevant signaling sections, among which "transport of inorganic cations/anions and amino acids/oligopeptides", "SLC-mediated transmembrane transport", and "metabolism of amino acids and derivatives" should be further studied to elucidate their potential pathogenic mechanism in the development of depression and associated suicidal behavior. In conclusion, our findings of these 17 metabolites and associated signaling pathways could provide an insight into the molecular pathogenesis of depression-associated suicidal behavior and potential targets for new drug inventions.

Abstract
The regulation of insulin on depression and depression-like behaviour has been widely reported. Insulin and activation of its receptor can promote learning and memory, affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) balance, regulate the secretion of neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitters, interact with gastrointestinal microbiome, exert neuroprotective effects and have an impact on depression. However, the role of insulin on depression remains largely unclear. Therefore, in this review, we summarized the potential role of insulin on depression. It may provide new insight for clarifying role of insulin on the pathogenesis of depression.

Abstract
Antidepressant drugs are globally used to treat several psychiatric disorders in pediatric patients and their prescription has continued to increase in recent years, especially among girls. In addition to its well-known metabolic and gastrointestinal side effects, antidepressants can cause sexual dysfunction in adults. However, the effects of the antidepressants on puberty onset and reproductive system remain unclear in children and adolescents. Therefore, the goal of this study is to examine the effects of chronic postnatal antidepressant drugs, paroxetine or bupropion, treatments on puberty onset and reproductive system components in female rats weaned at postnatal day (PND) 21. Female rats (n = 10 for each group) were exposed to vehicle (0.2 mL of saline), paroxetine (3.6 mg/kg in 0.2 mL of saline) or bupropion (17 mg/kg in 0.2 mL of saline) daily by oral gavage from the PND 21 to PND 90-93. Chronic paroxetine or bupropion treatments advanced the puberty onset, but the difference was statistically significant in only the paroxetine group. The exposure to bupropion significantly decreased the serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels. There were increases in serum estradiol levels by both antidepressant treatments and the significance was found in only the paroxetine group. Consistent with these results, histopathologic changes were observed in the ovary and uterus tissues taken from both antidepressant-treated rats. The obtained results of chronic postnatal exposure to paroxetine or bupropion may change the timing of puberty onset and lead to disruption of reproductive functions in females.

Abstract
Acute and chronic stressors are common triggers of human mental illnesses. Experimental animal models and their cross-species translation to humans are critical for understanding of the pathogenesis of stress-related psychiatric disorders. Mounting evidence suggests that both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches can be efficient in treating these disorders. Here, we analyze human, rodent and zebrafish (Danio rerio) data to compare the impact of non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies of stress-related psychopathologies. Emphasizing the likely synergism and interplay between pharmacological and environmental factors in mitigating daily stress both clinically and in experimental models, we argue that environmental enrichment emerges as a promising complementary therapy for stress-induced disorders across taxa. We also call for a broader use of novel model organisms, such as zebrafish, to study such treatments and their potential interplay.

Abstract
Background: Feedback is considered as an effective means of motivating, guiding, and reinforcing desired behaviours. However, the ways to interpret external feedback may be different among individuals with different personality traits; therefore, this would influence the effects of feedback on performance. Accordingly, the influencing effects of personality towards different styles of feedback on cognitive task performance were examined. Methods: Participants (N = 71) were given three Stroop tasks as a dependent variable, whereas the Trail Making Task was an independent variable; additionally, a personality test was used to record the personality traits of each participant. The relationship between personality and feedback-induced changes in Stroop performance was computed by means of Pearson correlation, followed by a mixed-effect model to demonstrate the effect of personality on the overall performance with feedback. Results: The statistical analysis indicated that performance from those with higher levels of extraversion generally profitted from feedback, irrespective of whether it was negative feedback (r = 0.201) or positive feedback (r = 0.205). Additionally, the moderating effect of personality on feedback and performance was demonstrated. Conclusions: The limitations of the sample size and other external influences may have reduced the representativeness of the research. Nonetheless, more potential influencing factors need to be included and explored in future research.

Abstract
Refugees experience high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression due to exposure to civilian war trauma and forced migration. Inflammatory products may offer viable biological indicators of trauma-related psychopathology in this cohort, promoting rapid and objective assessment of psychopathology. Incoming Syrian and Iraqi refugees (n = 36) ages 18-65 completed self-report measures of PTSD, anxiety, and depression and provided saliva samples during an assessment at a primary care clinic within the first month of resettlement in the United States. Interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and C-reactive protein (CRP) differentially correlated with symptom severity by domain, and there was a non-significant trend for sex moderating the relation between inflammation and PTSD symptoms. Our findings show unique relations between trauma-related psychopathology and inflammation. There is a need for further research in diverse ethnic cohorts with differential trauma exposures for inflammation to be considered a biological indicator of psychopathology.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a statistical model of anhedonia of depression. The study included 748 healthy controls (350 women, 46.79%, age 21.27 ± 4.72) and 80 patients (32 women, 40%, age 38.36 ± 16.42). The Physical Anhedonia Scale (PhAS), the Social Anhedonia Scale (CSAS), the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) and the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) were administered. Classical Measurement Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT) were applied to the collected data. We observed that the general factor of depression status was significantly related with positive emotion (r = -0.37, P < 0.05), negative emotion (r = 0.62, P < 0.05) and BDI (r = 0.48, P < 0.01). A significant difference also was observed between controls and patients. The bifactor model of anhedonia of depression provided a better fit to the data than a unidimensional model. The bifactor model appears to be useful to describe anhedonia in depression.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances, such as short sleep duration and insomnia, are core features of depression. However, it is unclear if sleep duration and insomnia have an interactive effect on depression severity or individual symptoms. Data were drawn from a community sample (N = 1007) containing responses on the Insomnia Severity Index, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and average sleep duration. Regression analyses determined the prevalence risks (PR) of symptoms of depression based on insomnia severity and sleep duration. Depression severity was related to insomnia severity (PR 1.09, p < 0.001) and short sleep duration (PR 1.52, p < 0.001), but the interaction between the two was negative (PR 0.97, p < 0.001). Insomnia severity increased the prevalence risk of all individual depression symptoms between 8 and 15%, while sleep duration increased the prevalence risk of appetite dysregulation (PR 1.86, p < 0.001), fatigue (PR 1.51, p < 0.001), difficulty concentrating (PR 1.61, p = 0.003), feelings of failure (PR 1.58, p = 0.002), and suicidal behavior (PR 2.54, p = 0.01). The interaction of sleep duration and insomnia was negative and ranged between 3 and 6%. In clinically significant depression (PHQ >=10), only insomnia severity increased the prevalence risk of depression severity (PR 1.02, p = 0.001). Insomnia and short sleep predict prevalent depression, but their interactive effect was negative. Thus, while insomnia had a greater association with depression severity and symptoms, this association was dependent on habitual sleep duration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was carried out to delineate differences between major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls in dynorphin and kappa opioid receptor (KOR) levels in association with changes in the β-endorphin - mu opioid receptor (MOR) and immune-inflammatory system. METHODS The present study examines dynorphin, KOR, β-endorphin, MOR, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10 in 60 drug-free male participants with MDD and 30 age-matched healthy males. RESULTS Serum dynorphin, KOR, β-endorphin and MOR are significantly higher in MDD as compared to controls. The increases in the dynorphin/KOR system and β-endorphin/MOR system are significantly intercorrelated and are both strongly associated with increased IL-6 and IL-10 levels. Dynorphin, β-endorphin, KOR and both cytokines showed a good diagnostic performance for MDD versus controls with a bootstrapped (n = 2000) area under the receiver operating curve of 0.972. The dynorphin/KOR system is significantly decreased in depression with comorbid nicotine dependence. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that, in MDD, immune activation is associated with a simultaneous activation of dynorphin/KOR and β-endorphin/MOR signaling and that these opioid systems may participate in the pathophysiology of depression by (a) exerting immune-regulatory activities attenuating the primary immune response and (b) modulating reward responses and mood as well as emotional and behavioural responses to stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Using a large nationwide cohort, this study aimed to determine the risk of suicide after the use of a 5α-reductase inhibitor, an antiandrogenic medication commonly used in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms. METHODS A retrospective population-based cohort study was performed using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. The study consisted of 51,466 men 60 years or older who underwent health examinations between 2005 and 2006. Individuals using a 5α-reductase inhibitor were compared with nonusers based on drug exposure between 2003 and 2006. Individuals using a 5α-reductase inhibitor were additionally divided into tertiles based on cumulative 5α-reductase inhibitor exposure. The incidence of completed suicide was documented during 7 years of follow-up, starting January 1, 2007. RESULTS No significant risk of suicide was observed among 5α-reductase inhibitor users compared with 5α-reductase inhibitor nonusers (hazard ratio = 1.02, 95% confidence interval = 0.70-1.48). Cumulative 5α-reductase inhibitor exposure was also not associated with increased risk of suicide (p for trend = .543). CONCLUSIONS 5α-Reductase inhibitor use was not associated with an elevated risk of suicide during a long-term follow-up period. A limitation of this study is that possible drug exposure after the index date was not accounted for. Although 5α-reductase inhibitor may increase the risk of depressive symptoms, the present data indicate that the drug is safe in terms of long-term suicide risk.
