Ultrathin Piezoelectric Resonators Based on Graphene and Free-Standing Single-Crystal BaTiO3

Photostrictive Actuators Based on Freestanding Ferroelectric Membranes

Complex oxides offer a wide range of functional properties, and recent advances in the fabrication of freestanding membranes of these oxides are adding new mechanical degrees of freedom to this already rich functional ecosystem. Here, photoactuation is demonstrated in freestanding thin film resonators of ferroelectric Barium Titanate (BaTiO3) and paraelectric Strontium Titanate (SrTiO3). The free-standing films, transferred onto perforated supports, act as nano-drums, oscillating at their natural resonance frequency when illuminated by a frequency-modulated laser. The light-induced deflections in the ferroelectric BaTiO3 membranes are two orders of magnitude larger than in the paraelectric SrTiO3 ones. Time-resolved X-ray micro-diffraction under illumination and temperature-dependent holographic interferometry provide combined evidence for the photostrictive strain in BaTiO3 originating from a partial screening of ferroelectric polarization by photo-excited carriers, which decreases the tetragonality of the unit cell. These findings showcase the potential of photostrictive freestanding ferroelectric films as wireless actuators operated by light.

Advancing piezoelectric 2D nanomaterials for applications in drug delivery systems and therapeutic approaches

Precision drug delivery and multimodal synergistic therapy are crucial in treating diverse ailments, such as cancer, tissue damage, and degenerative diseases. Electrodes that emit electric pulses have proven effective in enhancing molecule release and permeability in drug delivery systems. Moreover, the physiological electrical microenvironment plays a vital role in regulating biological functions and triggering action potentials in neural and muscular tissues. Due to their unique noncentrosymmetric structures, many 2D materials exhibit outstanding piezoelectric performance, generating positive and negative charges under mechanical forces. This ability facilitates precise drug targeting and ensures high stimulus responsiveness, thereby controlling cellular destinies. Additionally, the abundant active sites within piezoelectric 2D materials facilitate efficient catalysis through piezochemical coupling, offering multimodal synergistic therapeutic strategies. However, the full potential of piezoelectric 2D nanomaterials in drug delivery system design remains underexplored due to research gaps. In this context, the current applications of piezoelectric 2D materials in disease management are summarized in this review, and the development of drug delivery systems influenced by these materials is forecast.

Two-Dimensional Layered Materials Meet Perovskite Oxides: A Combination for High-Performance Electronic Devices

As the Si-based transistors scale down to atomic dimensions, the basic principle of current electronics, which heavily relies on the tunable charge degree of freedom, faces increasing challenges to meet the future requirements of speed, switching energy, heat dissipation, and packing density as well as functionalities. Heterogeneous integration, where dissimilar layers of materials and functionalities are unrestrictedly stacked at an atomic scale, is appealing for next-generation electronics, such as multifunctional, neuromorphic, spintronic, and ultralow-power devices, because it unlocks technologically useful interfaces of distinct functionalities. Recently, the combination of functional perovskite oxides and two-dimensional layered materials (2DLMs) led to unexpected functionalities and enhanced device performance. In this paper, we review the recent progress of the heterogeneous integration of perovskite oxides and 2DLMs from the perspectives of fabrication and interfacial properties, electronic applications, and challenges as well as outlooks. In particular, we focus on three types of attractive applications, namely field-effect transistors, memory, and neuromorphic electronics. The van der Waals integration approach is extendible to other oxides and 2DLMs, leading to almost unlimited combinations of oxides and 2DLMs and contributing to future high-performance electronic and spintronic devices.

Tuning Piezoelectricity via Thermal Annealing at a Freestanding Ferroelectric Membrane

Tuning the ferroelectric domain structure by a combination of elastic and electrostatic engineering provides an effective route for enhanced piezoelectricity. However, for epitaxial thin films, the clamping effect imposed by the substrate does not allow aftergrowth tuning and also limits the electromechanical response. In contrast, freestanding membranes, which are free of substrate constraints, enable the tuning of a subtle balance between elastic and electrostatic energies, giving new platforms for enhanced and tunable functionalities. Here, highly tunable piezoelectricity is demonstrated in freestanding PbTiO₃ membranes, by varying the ferroelectric domain structures from c-dominated to c/a and a domains via aftergrowth thermal treatment. Significantly, the piezoelectric coefficient of the c/a domain structure is enhanced by a factor of 2.5 compared with typical c domain PbTiO₃. This work presents a new strategy to manipulate the piezoelectricity in ferroelectric membranes, highlighting their great potential for nano actuators, transducers, sensors and other NEMS device applications.
