Abstract
The ambiphilic Ge(II) and Sn(II) cationic species have been reported to be isolated through kinetic or thermodynamic stabilizations. Nonetheless, steric congestion or excessive coordination of donor atoms to the cationic center concurrently disfavors its prompt reactivity. Our research in this field revolves around the utilization of structurally non-rigid bis(imine) based tetradentate supporting ligands for the stabilization of Ge(II) and Sn(II) cationic species. Such E(II) cationic systems have been advantaged due to inherent flexibility present at the ligand backbone allowing disposal of E(II) orbitals through geometric rearrangements for further reactivity. The bifunctionality present in the ligand enables the first examples of Ge(II) bis-monocations. Furthermore, the redox-active nature of the ligand encourages participation in chemical transformations. In this personal account we have provided a detailed discussion of our published work in this direction in the last five years.

Abstract
Dinuclear low-valent compounds of the heavy main group elements are rare species owing to their intrinsic reactivity. However, they represent desirable target molecules due to their unusual bonding situations as well as applications in bond activations and materials synthesis. The isolation of such compounds usually requires the use of substituents that provide sufficient stability and synthetic access. Herein, we report on the use of strongly donating ylide-substituents to access low-valent dinuclear group 14 compounds. The ylides not only impart steric and electronic stabilization, but also allow facile synthesis via transfer of an ylide from tetrylene precursors of type R Y2 E to ECl2 (E=Ge, Sn; R Y=TolSO2 (PR3 )C with R=Ph, Cy). This method allowed the isolation of dinuclear complexes amongst a germanium analogue of a vinyl cation, [(Ph Y)2 GeGe(Ph Y)]+ with an electronic structure best described as a germylene-stabilized GeII cation and a ylide(chloro)digermene [Cy Y(Cl)GeGe(Cl)Cy Y] with an unusually unsymmetrical structure.

Abstract
The reaction of 1,2-dipiperidinoacetylene (1) with 0.5 equivalents of SnCl2 or GeCl2 ⋅dioxane afforded the 1,2,3,4-tetrapiperidino-1,3-cyclobutadiene tin and germanium dichloride complexes 2 a and 2 b, respectively. A competing redox reaction was observed with excess amounts of SnCl2 , which produced a tetrapiperidinocyclobutadiene dication with two trichlorostannate(II) counterions. Heating neat 1 to 110 °C for 16 h cleanly produced the dimer 1,3,4,4-tetrapiperidino-3-buten-1-yne (3); its reaction with stoichiometric amounts of SnCl2 or GeCl2 ⋅dioxane furnished the 1,3,4,4-tetrapiperidino-1,2-cyclobutadiene tin and germanium dichloride complexes 4 a and 4 b, respectively. Transition-metal complexes containing this novel four-membered cyclic bent allene (CBA) ligand were prepared by reaction of 3 with [(tht)AuCl], [RhCl(CO)2 ]2 , and [(Me3 N)W(CO)5 ] to form [(CBA)AuCl] (5), [(CBA)RhCl(CO)2 ] (6), and [(CBA)W(CO)5 ] (7). The molecular structures of all compounds 2-7 were determined by X-ray diffraction analyses, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to rationalise the formation of 3 and 4 a.

Abstract
The synthesis of a boryl-substituted germanium(II) cation, [Ge{B(NDippCH)2 }(IPrMe)]+ , (Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) featuring a supporting N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donor, has been explored through chloride abstraction from the corresponding (boryl)(NHC)GeCl precursor. Crystallographic studies in the solid state and UV/Vis spectra in fluorobenzene solution show that this species dimerizes under such conditions to give [(IPrMe){(HCNDipp)2 B}Ge=Ge{B(NDippCH)2 }(IPrMe)]2+ (IPrMe = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene), which can be viewed as an imidazolium-functionalized digermene. The dimer is cleaved in the presence of donor solvents such as [D8 ]thf or [D5 ]pyridine, to give monomeric adducts of the type [Ge{B(NDippCH)2 }(IPrMe)(L)]+ . In the case of the thf adduct, the additional donor is shown to be sufficiently labile that it can act as a convenient in situ source of the monomeric complex [Ge{B(NDippCH)2 }(IPrMe)]+ for oxidative bond-activation chemistry. Thus, [Ge{B(NDippCH)2 }(IPrMe)(thf)]+ reacts with silanes and dihydrogen, leading to the formation of GeIV products, whereas the cleavage of the N-H bond in ammonia ultimately yields products containing C-H and B-N bonds. The facile reactivity observed in E-H bond activation is in line with the very small calculated HOMO-LUMO gap (132 kJ mol-1 ).

Abstract
The isolation and structural characterization of the cyanido-substituted metalated ylides [Ph3 P-C-CN]M (1-M; M=Li, Na, K) are reported with lithium, sodium, and potassium as metal cations. In the solid-state, most different aggregates could be determined depending on the metal and additional Lewis bases. The crown-ether complexes of sodium (1-Na) and potassium (1-K) exhibited different structures, with sodium preferring coordination to the nitrogen end, whereas potassium binds in an unusual η2 -coordination mode to the two central carbon atoms. The formation of the yldiide was accompanied by structural changes leading to shorter C-C and longer C-N bonds. This could be attributed to the delocalization of the free electron pairs at the carbon atom into the antibonding orbitals of the CN moiety, which was confirmed by IR spectroscopy and computational studies. Detailed density functional theory calculations show that the changes in the structure and the bonding situation were most pronounced in the lithium compounds due to the higher covalency.

Abstract
The extremely bulky N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), ITr (ITr=[(HCNCPh3 )2 C:]) featuring sterically shielding umbrella-shaped trityl (CPh3 ) substituents was prepared. This NHC features the highest percent buried volume (%Vbur ) to date, and was used to form a thermally stable quasi one-coordinate thallium(I) cation [ITr-Tl]+ . This TlI adduct and the corresponding lithium complex [ITr⋅Li(OEt2 )]+ are versatile "all-in-one" transmetalation/ligation reagents for preparing low-coordinate inorganic species inaccessible by pre-existing routes.

Abstract
Bis(sulfane)carbon(0) (BSC; Ph2 S→C←SPh2 (1)) is successfully synthesized by deprotonation of the corresponding protonated salt 1⋅HTfO. The diprotonated salt 1⋅(HTfO)2 as the starting material can be also easily accessed by the deimination of iminosulfane(sulfane)carbon(0) (iSSC)⋅HBF4 . Density functional theory calculations revealed the peculiar electronic structure of 1, which has two lone pairs of electrons at the central carbon atom. The largest proton affinities (PA(1): 297.5 kcal mol-1 ; PA(2): 183.7 kcal mol-1 ) and the highest energy levels of the HOMOs (HOMO: -4.89 eV; HOMO-1: -5.02 eV) for 1 among the two-sulfur-stabilized carbones clearly indicate the strong donor ability of carbon center stabilized by two SII ligands. The donating ability of these lone pairs of electrons is demonstrated by the C-diaurated and C-proton-aurated complexes, which provide the first experimental evidence for two-sulfurstabilized carbones behaving as four-electron donors. Furthermore, the syntheses and application of AgI carbone complexes as carbone transfer agents are also reported.

Abstract
Quantum chemical calculations have been carried out to study the electronic structure of metalated ylides particularly in comparison to their neutral analogues, the bisylides. A series of compounds of the general composition Ph3 P-C-L with L being either a neutral or an anionic ligand were analyzed and the impact of the nature of the substituent L and the total charge on the electronics and bonding situation was studied. The charge at the carbon atom as well as the dissociation energies, bond lengths, and Wiberg bond indices strongly depend on the nature of L. Here, not only the charge of the ligand but also the position of the charge within the ligand backbone plays an important role. Independent of the substitution pattern, the NBO analysis reveals the preference of unsymmetrical bonding situations (P=C-L or P-C=L) for almost all compounds. However, Lewis structures with two lone-pair orbitals at the central carbon atom are equally valid for the description of the bonding situation. This is confirmed by the pronounced lone-pair character of the frontier orbitals. Energy decomposition analysis mostly reveals the preference of several bonding situations, mostly with dative and ylidic electron-sharing bonds (e.g., P→C- -L). In general, the anionic systems show a higher preference of the ylidic bonding situations compared to the neutral analogues. However, in most of the cases different resonance structures have to be considered for the description of the "real" bonding situation.

Abstract
The novel phosphonyl-substituted ferrocene derivatives [Fe(η(5) -Cp)(η(5) -C5 H3 {P(O)(O-iPr)2 }2 -1,2)] (Fc(1,2) ) and [Fe{η(5) -C5 H4 P(O)(O-iPr)2 }2 ] (Fc(1,1') ) react with SnCl2 , SnCl4 , and SnPh2 Cl2 , giving the corresponding complexes [(Fc(1,2) )2 SnCl][SnCl3 ] (1), [{(Fc(1,1') )SnCl2 }n ] (2), [(Fc(1,1') )SnCl4 ] (3), [{(Fc(1,1') )SnPh2 Cl2 }n ] (4), and [(Fc(1,2) )SnCl4 ] (5), respectively. The compounds are characterized by elemental analyses, (1) H, (13) C, (31) P, (119) Sn NMR and IR spectroscopy, (31) P and (119) Sn CP-MAS NMR spectroscopy, cyclovoltammetry, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single-crystal as well as powder X-ray diffraction analyses. The experimental work is accompanied by DFT calculations, which help to shed light on the origin for the different reaction behavior of Fc(1,1') and Fc(1,2) towards tin(II) chloride.
