Semiconducting and electroluminescent nanowires self-assembled from organoplatinum(II) complexes

Dicationic Diimine Pt(II) Bis(N-heterocyclic allenylidene) Complexes: Extended Pt···Pt Chains, NIR Phosphorescence, and Chromonics

Although square-planar Pt(II) complexes are well-known to self-assemble into supramolecules via noncovalent intermolecular Pt···Pt and/or π-π interactions, the self-assembly of dicationic Pt(II) complexes was scarce due to the electrostatic repulsive force. Herein, a series of dicationic diimine bis(N-heterocyclic allenylidene) Pt(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Close Pt···Pt and/or π-π contacts are observed in the crystals of these complexes. In particular, complexes 1·2PF₆ and 2·2PF₆ exhibit one-dimensional packing with extended Pt···Pt contacts of 3.302 and 3.240 Å, respectively. The photophysical properties of these complexes in the solution and solid state were investigated. NIR emission was recorded for complexes 1·2PF₆ (λ_max = 950 nm) and 2·2PF₆ (λ_max = 855 nm) in the solid state at 298 K. To explore the aggregate behaviors of these complexes, the counteranion PF₆^- was exchanged to the large lipophilic anion 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzene sulfonate (LA^-) and the hydrophilic anion Cl^-. Complexes 1·2LA and 2·2LA or 1·2Cl and 2·2Cl could self-assemble with Pt···Pt and/or π-π interactions in the nonpolar or aqueous solutions as well. Further increasing the concentration of 1·2Cl and 2·2Cl in aqueous solution, chromonic mesophases with NIR emission (λ_max = 988 nm) were obtained. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were performed to gain deep insight into the dication-dication packings and photophysical properties of the complexes. The σ-donating as well as π-accepting character of the N-heterocyclic allenylidene ligand endows complexes with rigid and electron-delocalized coplanar features, which are conducive to achieving the self-assembling processes associated with Pt···Pt and/or π-π interactions.

Optical Signal Modulation in Photonic Waveguiding Heteroarchitectures with Continuously Variable Visible-To-Near-Infrared Emission Color

Photonic circuit systems based on optical waveguiding heteroarchitectures have attracted considerable interest owing to their potential to overcome the speed limitation in electronic circuits by modulating the optical signal at the micro- or nanoscale. However, controlling the parameters, including the wavelength and polarization of the light outcoupling, as well as the sequence among different building blocks, remains a key issue. Herein, supramolecular heteroarchitectures made by phosphorescent organometallic complexes of Pt, Pd, Cu, and Au are applied as photonic logic gates that show continuously variable emission colors from 475 to 810 nm, low waveguide losses down to 0.0077 dB µm^-1 , and remarkable excitation-light polarization-dependent photoluminescence with anisotropy ratios up to 0.68. The sequences among Pt, Pd, Au, and Cu building blocks in the heteroarchitectures are controlled by living supramolecular polymerization or crystallization-driven self-assembly synthetic approaches. The results indicate the prospects for using organometallic complexes and supramolecular synthetic approaches to prepare photonic circuit systems with tunable emission color and controllable sequences among different blocks that achieve modulation of the optical signal in the visible-to-near-infrared spectral region.

Intracellular Dynamic Assembly of Deep-Red Emitting Supramolecular Nanostructures Based on the Pt…Pt Metallophilic Interaction

Many drug delivery systems end up in the lysosome because they are built from covalent or kinetically inert supramolecular bonds. To reach other organelles, nanoparticles hence need to either be made from a kinetically labile interaction that allows re-assembly of the nanoparticles inside the cell following endocytic uptake, or, be taken up by a mechanism that short-circuits the classical endocytosis pathway. In this work, the intracellular fate of nanorods that self-assemble via the Pt…Pt interaction of cyclometalated platinum(II) compounds, is studied. These deep-red emissive nanostructures (638 nm excitation, ≈700 nm emission) are stabilized by proteins in cell medium. Once in contact with cancer cells, they cross the cell membrane via dynamin- and clathrin-dependent endocytosis. However, time-dependent confocal colocalization and cellular electron microscopy demonstrate that they directly move to mitochondria without passing by the lysosomes. Altogether, this study suggests that Pt…Pt interaction is strong enough to generate emissive, aggregated nanoparticles inside cells, but labile enough to allow these nanostructures to reach the mitochondria without being trapped in the lysosomes. These findings open new venues to the development of bioimaging nanoplatforms based on the Pt…Pt interaction.

Self-assembly of neutral platinum complexes possessing chiral hydrophilic TEG chains

Neutral platinum complexes that possess chiral triethylene glycol (TEG) moieties were synthesized. The platinum complexes formed helically twisted stacked assemblies in chloroform and toluene, which were studied by ¹H NMR, UV/vis spectroscopy, and emission spectroscopy. On the other hand, emissive micellar aggregates were observed in a THF/water mixed solvent. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments revealed that micellar aggregates with a diameter (d) of ≈100 nm emitted strong light, whereas the monomeric form and large aggregates (d > 500 nm) did not show luminescence efficiently. Furthermore, the micellar aggregates were twisted chirally, where the twisted direction was determined by the chirality of the TEG moieties. The assemblies were observed to be solvent responsive, which allows for the modulation of the nanostructure by changing the solvent polarity.

Supramolecular Assembly of An Organoplatinum(II) Complex with Ratiometric Dual Emission for Two-Photon Bioimaging

The organoplatinum(II) complex [Pt(C^N^N)(Cl)] (C^N^N=5,6-diphenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, Pt1) can assemble into nanoaggregates via π-π stacking and complementary hydrogen bonds, rather than Pt-Pt interactions. Pt1 exhibits ratiometric dual emission, including rare blue emission (λ_em =445 nm) and assembly-induced yellow emission (λ_em =573 nm), under one- and two-photon excitation. Pt1 displays blue emission in cells with an intact membrane due to its low cellular uptake. In cells where the membrane is disrupted, uptake of the complex is increased and at higher concentrations yellow emission is observed. The ratio of yellow to blue emission shows a linear relationship to the loss of cell membrane integrity. Pt1 is, to our knowledge, the first example of an assembly-induced two-photon ratiometric dual emission organoplatinum complex. The excellent and unique characteristics of the complex enabled its use for the tracking of cell apoptosis, necrosis, and the inflammation process in zebrafish.

Multinuclear PtII Complexes: Why Three is Better Than Two to Enhance Photophysical Properties

The self-assembly of platinum complexes is a well-documented process that leads to interesting changes of the photophysical and electrochemical behavior as well as to a change in reactivity of the complexes. However, it is still not clear how many metal units must interact in order to achieve the desired properties of a large assembly. This work aimed to clarify the role of the number of interacting PtII units leading to an enhancement of the spectroscopic properties and how to address inter- versus intramolecular processes. Therefore, a series of neutral multinuclear PtII complexes were synthesized and characterized, and their photophysical properties at different concentration were studied. Going from the monomer to dimers, the growth of a new emission band and the enhancement of the emission properties were observed. Upon increasing the platinum units up to three, the monomeric blue emission could not be detected anymore and a concentration independent bright-yellow/orange emission, due to the establishment of intramolecular metallophilic interactions, was observed.

Effect of the Fluoro-Substituent Position on the Crystal Structure and Photoluminescence of Microcrystals of Platinum β-Diketonate Complexes

Molecular packing has an important effect on the photophysical properties of crystalline materials. We demonstrate in this work the modulation of molecular packing and emission properties of microcrystals by minor molecular structural variations. Four platinum β-diketonate complexes, with two fluoro substituents (1) or one fluoro atom substituted on different positions of the auxiliary phenylpyridine ligand (2-4) have been synthesized. These complexes were used to prepare one-dimensional microcrystals with well-defined shapes and uniform sizes. Although 1-4 display similar emission spectra in the solution state, the corresponding microcrystals display different emission colors from green to yellow and orange. In addition, different temperature-responsive (80-298 K) emission spectral changes have been observed from these microcrystals, including the intensity variation of the locally excited (LE) emission without obvious wavelength shifts, competition between the LE and metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer emissions, and the sole wavelength shift of the π-π excimer emissions. These differences in emission properties are rationalized by different molecular packings of these materials, as revealed by single-crystal X-ray analyses.

Platinum(ii) non-covalent crosslinkers for supramolecular DNA hydrogels

Manipulation of non-covalent metal–metal interactions allows the fabrication of functional metallosupramolecular structures with diverse supramolecular behaviors. The majority of reported studies are mostly designed and governed by thermodynamics, with very few examples of metallosupramolecular systems exhibiting intriguing kinetics. Here we report a serendipitous finding of platinum(ii) complexes serving as non-covalent crosslinkers for the fabrication of supramolecular DNA hydrogels. Upon mixing the alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complex with double-stranded DNA in aqueous solution, the platinum(ii) complex molecules are found to first stack into columnar phases by metal–metal and π–π interactions, and then the columnar phases that carry multiple positive charges crosslink the negatively charged DNA strands to form supramolecular hydrogels with luminescence properties and excellent processability. Subsequent platinum(ii) intercalation into DNA competes with the metal–metal and π–π interactions at the crosslinking points, switching on the spontaneous gel-to-sol transition. In the case of a chloro (2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2′-yl)pyridine)platinum(ii) complex, with [Pt(bzimpy)Cl]⁺ serving as a non-covalent crosslinker where the metal–metal and π–π interactions outcompete platinum(ii) intercalation, the intercalation-driven gel-to-sol transition pathway is blocked since the gel state is energetically more favorable than the sol state. Interestingly, the ligand exchange reaction of the chloro ligand in [Pt(bzimpy)Cl]⁺ with glutathione (GSH) has endowed the complexes with enhanced hydrophilicity, decreasing the planarity of the complexes, and turning off the metal–metal and π–π interactions at the crosslinking points, leading to GSH-triggered hydrogel dissociation.

Platinum(II) Probes for Sensing Polyelectrolyte Lengths and Architectures

Platinum(II) polypyridine complexes of a square-planar geometry have been used as spectroscopic reporters for quantification of various charged species through non-covalent metal-metal interactions. The characterization of molecular weights and architectures of polyelectrolytes represents a challenging task in polymer science. Here, we report the utilization of platinum(II) complex probes and non-covalent metal-metal interactions for sensing polyelectrolyte lengths and architectures. It is found that the platinum(II) probes can bind to linear polyelectrolytes via electrostatic attractions and give rise to significant spectroscopic changes associated with the formation of metal-metal interactions, and the extent of the spectroscopic changes is found to increase with the lengths of the linear polyelectrolytes. Besides, the platinum(II) probes have been found to co-assemble with the linear polyelectrolytes to form well-defined nanofibers, and the lengths of the linear polyelectrolytes can be directly estimated from the diameter of the nanofibers under transmission electron microscopy observation. Interestingly, upon mixing with the platinum(II) probes, polyelectrolytes with bottlebrush architectures have been found to exhibit larger spectroscopic changes than linear polyelectrolytes with the same chemical composition. Combined with the reported theoretical studies on counterion condensation of polyelectrolytes, the platinum(II) complexes are found to function as spectroscopic probes for sensing the charge densities of the polyelectrolytes with different lengths and diverse architectures. Moreover, platinum(II) probes pre-organized in nanostructured aggregates have been found to intercalate into double-stranded DNA, which are naturally occurring biological polyelectrolytes with helical architectures and intercalation sites, to give significant enhancement of spectroscopic changes when compared to the intercalation of monomeric platinum(II) probes into double-stranded DNA.

Supramolecular assembly of bent dinuclear amphiphilic alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complexes: diverse nanostructures through subtle tuning of the mode of molecular stacking

A new class of bent amphiphilic alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complexes was found to adopt different modes of molecular stacking to give diverse nanostructures. In chlorinated solvents, the complexes aggregate in the presence of water droplets and assist in the formation of porous networks, while in DMSO solutions, they self-assemble to give fibrous nanostructures. The complexes would adopt a head-to-tail tetragonal stacking arrangement, as revealed by X-ray crystallographic studies, computational studies and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies. Their self-assembly follows a cooperative growth mechanism in DMSO and an isodesmic growth mechanism in DMSO–H₂O mixture. The balance between hydrophobic and hydrophilic components of the complex system, in conjunction with the nuclearity and the positioning of the substituents, are found to govern the mode of molecular stacking and the fabrication of precise functional nanostructures. This class of complexes serve as versatile building blocks to construct orderly packed molecular materials and functional materials in a well-controlled manner.

Energy Landscape in Supramolecular Coassembly of Platinum(II) Complexes and Polymers: Morphological Diversity, Transformation, and Dilution Stability of Nanostructures

Establishment of energy landscape has emerged as an efficient pathway for improved understanding and manipulation of both thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of complicated supramolecular systems. Herein, we report the establishment of energy landscapes of supramolecular coassembly of platinum(II) complexes and polymers, as well as the fabrication of nanostructures with enhanced complexity and intriguing properties from the coassembly systems. In the energy landscape, coassembly at room temperature has been found to only allow the longitudinal growth of platinum(II) complexes and block copolymers into core-shell nanofibers that are the kinetically trapped products. Thermal annealing can switch on the transverse growth of platinum(II) complexes and block copolymers to produce core-shell nanobelts that are the thermodynamically stable nanostructures. The extents of the transverse growth are found to increase with thermal annealing temperatures, leading to nanobelts with larger widths. Besides, rapid quenching of a hot coassembly mixture to room temperature can capture intermediate nanobelt- block-nanofiber nanostructures that are metastable and capable of converting to nanobelts upon further incubation at room temperature. Moreover, sonication treatment has been found to couple with the energy landscape of the coassembly system and open a unique energy-driven pathway to activate the kinetically forbidden nanofiber-to-nanobelt morphological transformation. Furthermore, based on the established energy landscapes, nanosphere- block-nanobelt nanostructures with distinct segmented architectures have been fabricated by thermal annealing of the ternary mixture of platinum(II) complexes, block copolymers, and polymer brushes in a one-pot and single-step procedure. Finally, the nanobelts and nanosphere- block-nanobelt nanostructures are found to possess intriguing morphological stability against acid and dilution, exhibiting characteristics that are important for promising biomedical applications.

Supramolecular platinum(ii) complexes with highly efficient monomer luminescence

A new platinum(ii) complex containing a quaternary ammonium group was synthesized. The monomer and excimer emission of the complex could be tuned via the solvophobic effect, which was accompanied by transformation from a fiber to ribbon-like morphology.

Living supramolecular polymerization achieved by collaborative assembly of platinum(II) complexes and block copolymers

An important feature of biological systems to achieve complexity and precision is the involvement of multiple components where each component plays its own role and collaborates with other components. Mimicking this, we report living supramolecular polymerization achieved by collaborative assembly of two structurally dissimilar components, that is, platinum(II) complexes and poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PEG-b-PAA). The PAA blocks neutralize the charges of the platinum(II) complexes, with the noncovalent metal-metal and π-π interactions directing the longitudinal growth of the platinum(II) complexes into 1D crystalline nanostructures, and the PEG blocks inhibiting the transverse growth of the platinum(II) complexes and providing the whole system with excellent solubility. The ends of the 1D crystalline nanostructures have been found to be active during the assembly and remain active after the assembly. One-dimensional segmented nanostructures with heterojunctions have been produced by sequential growth of two types of platinum(II) complexes. The PAA blocks act as adapters at the heterojunctions for lattice matching between chemically and crystallographically different platinum(II) complexes, achieving heterojunctions with a lattice mismatch as large as 21%.

Aggregation-Induced Electrochemiluminescence of Platinum(II) Complexes

We report the electrochemiluminescence properties of square-planar Pt(II) complexes that result from the formation of supramolecular nanostructures. We define this new phenomenon as aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL). In this system, self-assembly changes the HOMO and LUMO energies, making their population accessible via ECL pathways and leading to the generation of the luminescent excited state. Significantly, the emission from the self-assembled system is the first example of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of Pt(II) complexes in aqueous solution having higher efficiency than the standard, Ru(bpy)₃²⁺.The finding can lead to a new generation of bright emitters that can be used as ECL labels.

Dimensional Control and Morphological Transformations of Supramolecular Polymeric Nanofibers Based on Cofacially-Stacked Planar Amphiphilic Platinum(II) Complexes

Square-planar platinum(II) complexes often stack cofacially to yield supramolecular fiber-like structures with interesting photophysical properties. However, control over fiber dimensions and the resulting colloidal stability is limited. We report the self-assembly of amphiphilic Pt(II) complexes with solubilizing ancillary ligands based on polyethylene glycol [PEG_n, where n = 16, 12, 7]. The complex with the longest solubilizing PEG ligand, Pt-PEG₁₆, self-assembled to form polydisperse one-dimensional (1D) nanofibers (diameters <5 nm). Sonication led to short seeds which, on addition of further molecularly dissolved Pt-PEG₁₆ complex, underwent elongation in a "living supramolecular polymerization" process to yield relatively uniform fibers of length up to ca. 400 nm. The fiber lengths were dependent on the Pt-PEG₁₆ complex to seed mass ratio in a manner analogous to a living covalent polymerization of molecular monomers. Moreover, the fiber lengths were unchanged in solution after 1 week and were therefore "static" with respect to interfiber exchange processes on this time scale. In contrast, similarly formed near-uniform fibers of Pt-PEG₁₂ exhibited dynamic behavior that led to broadening of the length distribution within 48 h. After aging for 4 weeks in solution, Pt-PEG₁₂ fibers partially evolved into 2D platelets. Furthermore, self-assembly of Pt-PEG₇ yielded only transient fibers which rapidly evolved into 2D platelets. On addition of further fiber-forming Pt complex (Pt-PEG₁₆), the platelets formed assemblies via the growth of fibers selectively from their short edges. Our studies demonstrate that when interfiber dynamic exchange is suppressed, dimensional control and hierarchical structure formation are possible for supramolecular polymers through the use of kinetically controlled seeded growth methods.

Supramolecular assembly of platinum-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes: an interplay of intermolecular interactions and a correlation between structural modifications and morphological transformations

A series of alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complexes functionalized with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) moieties has been demonstrated to exhibit drastic color changes and give various distinctive nanostructures with interesting multi-stage morphological transformations from spheres to nanoplates in response to solvent conditions through the interplay of various intermolecular interactions, including hydrophilic-hydrophilic, hydrophobic-hydrophobic, Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions. These supramolecular architectures can be systematically modified and controlled through the molecular design and the variation of solvent compositions. In particular, drastic changes in color in response to solvent polarity were observed through the incorporation of the charged moieties, representing a new class of potential candidates for functional materials with sensing or imaging capabilities. This class of complexes has been studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy.

Photophysical study on unsymmetrical binuclear cycloplatinated(ii) complexes

A general synthetic method has been designed to prepare a new series of unsymmetrical binuclear cyclometalated organoplatinum(ii) complexes and the effect of each part on their luminescence properties were investigated.
