Molecular Dynamics, Phase Transition and Frequency-Tuned Dielectric Switch of an Ionic Co-Crystal

Oriented Linear Self-Assembly of Colloidal Nanocrystals through Regioselective Formation of Hydrogen-Bonded Supramolecular Bridges

The linear assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) with orientational order presents a significant challenge in the field of colloidal assembly. This study presents an efficient strategy for assembling oleic acid (OAH)-capped, faceted rare earth NCs─such as nanorods, nanoplates, and nanodumbbells─into flexible chain-like superstructures. Remarkably, these NC chains exhibit a high degree of particle orientation even with an interparticle distance reaching up to 15 nm. Central to this oriented assembly method is the facet-selective adsorption of low-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol (PEG), such as PEG-400 (Mn = 400), onto specific facets of NCs. This regioselectivity is achieved by exploiting the lower binding affinity of OAH ligands on the (100) facets of rare earth NCs, enabling facet-specific ligand displacement and subsequent PEG attachment. By adjusting the solvent polarity, the linear assembly of NCs is induced by the solvophobic effect, which simultaneously promotes the formation of hydrogen-bonded PEG supramolecular bridges. These supramolecular bridges effectively connect NCs and exhibit sufficient robustness to maintain the structural integrity of the chains, despite the large interparticle spacing. Notably, even when coassembling different types of NCs, the resulting multicomponent chains still feature highly selective facet-to-facet connections. This work not only introduces a versatile method for fabricating well-aligned linear superstructures but also provides valuable insights into the fundamental principles governing the facet-selective assembly of NCs in solution.

Plastic phase transitions in tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane perchlorate

Organic crystal materials with metal-free feature and intrinsically low molecular mass are highly desirable for applications in flexible smart devices. Here, we reported a plastic crystal, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane perchlorate (Tris-HClO4), which crystallizes in the R3̄ space group at room temperature and undergoes plastic phase transition at 369 K, showing a large entropy gain of 70.5 J mol-1 K-1, much higher than its fusion entropy gain (12.9 J mol-1 K-1). PXRD measurement indicates that it has cubic lattice symmetry in the high-temperature phase. Moreover, it exhibits excellent dielectric permittivity switching properties and robust cyclic stability. This work could be the pathway for chemical designing multifunctional switchable materials with the motive of combining the idea of symmetry breaking and plastic phase transition.

Three-Step Ferroelastic Transitions from Hexagonal to Triclinic Phases in a Hybrid Perovskite: (1-Fluoromethyl-1-methylpyrrolidine)[CdCl3]

Hybrid ferroelastic crystals have emerged as a hot research topic in recent years owing to their prospective applications in piezoelectric sensors, mechanical switches, and optoelectronic devices. Nevertheless, most of the documented materials exhibit one-step or two-step ferroelastic phase transition(s), and those with multistep ferroelastic transitions are extremely scarce. We present a new hexagonal molecular perovskite based on a fluoro-substituted flexible cyclic ammonium cation, (1-fluoromethyl-1-methylpyrrolidine)[CdCl3] (1), undergoing unusual three-step ferroelastic phase transitions from hexagonal paraelastic phase to orthorhombic, monoclinic, and triclinic ferroelastic phases at 388, 376, and 311 K, respectively, with Aizu notation of 6/mmmFmmm, mmmF2/m, and 2/mF-1, featuring spontaneous strain of 0.002, 0.023, and 0.110, respectively. Furthermore, variable-temperature single-crystal diffraction reveals that the phase-transition mechanism in 1 principally originates from intriguing dynamic change of organic cations and synchronous displacement of inorganic chains. This scarce instance of multistep hybrid ferroelastic provides important clues for finding advanced ferroelastic materials.

Temperature-Dependent Separation of CO2 from Light Hydrocarbons in a Porous Self-Assembly of Vertexes Sharing Octahedra

Design of flexible porous materials where the diffusion of guest molecules is regulated by the dynamics of contracted pore aperture is challenging. Here, a flexible porous self-assembly consisting of 1D channels with dynamic bottleneck gates is reported. The dynamic pendant naphthimidazolylmethyl moieties at the channel necks provide kinetic gate function, that enables unusual adsorption for light hydrocarbons. The adsorption for CO2 is mainly dominated by thermodynamics with the uptakes decreasing with increasing temperature, whereas the adsorptions for larger hydrocarbons are controlled by both thermodynamics and kinetics resulting in an uptake maximum at a temperature threshold. Such an unusual adsorption enables temperature-dependent separation of CO2 from the corresponding hydrocarbons.

A High Working Temperature Multiferroic Induced by Inverse Temperature Symmetry Breaking

Molecular-based multiferroic materials that possess ferroelectric and ferroelastic orders simultaneously have attracted tremendous attention for their potential applications in multiple-state memory devices, molecular switches, and information storage systems. However, it is still a great challenge to effectively construct novel molecular-based multiferroic materials with multifunctionalities. Generally, the structure of these materials possess high symmetry at high temperatures, while processing an obvious order-disorder or displacement-type ferroelastic or ferroelectric phase transition triggered by symmetry breaking during the cooling processes. Therefore, these materials can only function below the Curie temperature (Tc), the low of which is a severe impediment to their practical application. Despite great efforts to elevate Tc, designing single-phase crystalline materials that exhibit multiferroic orders above room temperature remains a challenge. Here, an inverse temperature symmetry-breaking phenomenon was achieved in [FPM][Fe3(μ3-O)(μ-O2CH)8] (FPM stands for 3-(3-formylamino-propyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-1-ium, which acts as the counterions and the rotor component in the network), enabling a ferroelastoelectric phase at a temperature higher than Tc (365 K). Upon heating from room temperature, two-step distinct symmetry breaking with the mm2Fm species leads to the coexistence of ferroelasticity and ferroelectricity in the temperature interval of 365-426 K. In the first step, the FPM cations undergo a conformational flip-induced inverse temperature symmetry breaking; in the second step, a typical ordered-disordered motion-induced symmetry breaking phase transition can be observed, and the abnormal inverse temperature symmetry breaking is unprecedented. Except for the multistep ferroelectric and ferroelastic switching, this complex also exhibits fascinating nonlinear optical switching properties. These discoveries not only signify an important step in designing novel molecular-based multiferroic materials with high working temperatures, but also inspire their multifunctional applications such as multistep switches.

Halogen Substitution Regulates High Temperature Dielectric Switch in Lead-Free Chiral Hybrid Perovskites

Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) based phase transition materials have received widespread attention due to their excellent performance and potential applications in energy harvesting, optoelectronics, ferroics, and actuators. Nevertheless, effectively regulating the properties of phase transitions is still a thorny problem. In this work, two chiral lead-free HMHs (R-3FP)2 SbCl5 (1; 3FP=3-fluoropyrrolidinium) and (R-3FP)2 SbBr5 (2) were synthesized. By replacing the halide ions in the inorganic skeleton, the phase transition temperature of 2 changes with an increase of about 20 K, compared with 1. Meanwhile, both compounds display reversible dielectric switching properties. Through crystal structure analysis and Hirshfeld surface analysis, their phase transitions are ascribed to the disorder of the cations and deformation of the inorganic chains.

Temperature-Tuned Variable Confined Space for Modulating Dipolar Polarization of a Disc-Shaped Ammonium Ion

Free accessible confined space and loose interaction are crucial for most solid-state ionic motions. Here, by using a near-spherical anion and a disc-shaped ammonium as two distinct but rigid building blocks, we report a new ionic crystal, (HMIm)3[La(NO3)6] (HMIm = 1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium), in which the different confined spaces of three (HMIm)+ ions are fine-tuned over a broad temperature range. This effect can be utilized to modulate the dipolar polarization across a wide temperature/frequency range. Additionally, small-scale substitution of (HMIm)+ by its isomer of almost identical shape/size affords molecular solid solutions, which can further tune the dipolar polarization by varying the doping ratio. It is revealed that the differences in dipole moment and hydrogen bond rather than that of shape/size lead to a distorted crystalline environment for these solid solutions. Overall, we provide an exceptional model for understanding and regulating the dipole motion of polar aromatic molecules/ions in a crystalline environment.

Structural Diversity, XAS and Magnetism of Copper(II)-Nickel(II) Heterometallic Complexes Based on the [Ni(NCS)6]4- Unit

The new heterometallic compounds, [{Cu(pn)₂}₂Ni(NCS)₆]_n·2nH₂O (1), [{Cu^II(trien)}₂Ni(NCS)₆Cu^I(NCS)]_n (2) and [Cu(tren)(NCS)]₄[Ni(NCS)₆] (3) (pn = 1,2-diaminopropane, trien = triethylenetetramine and tren = tris(2-aminoethylo)amine), were obtained and characterized by X-ray analysis, IR spectra, XAS and magnetic measurements. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 show the structural diversity of 2D, 1D and 0D compounds, respectively. Depending on the polyamine used, different coordination polyhedron for Cu(II) was found, i.e., distorted octahedral (1), square pyramidal (2) and trigonal bipyramidal (3), whereas coordination polyhedron for nickel(II) was always octahedral. It provides an approach for tailoring magnetic properties by proper selection of auxiliary ligands determining the topology. In 1, thiocyanate ligands form bridges between the copper and nickel ions, creating 2D layers of sql topology with weak ferromagnetic interactions. Compound 2 is a mixed-valence copper coordination polymer and shows the rare ladder topology of 1D chains decorated with [Cu^II(tren)]²⁺ antennas as the side chains attached to nickel(II). The ladder rails are formed by alternately arranged Ni(II) and Cu(I) ions connected by N2 thiocyanate anions and rungs made by N3 thiocyanate. For the Cu(I) ions, the tetrahedral thiocyanate environment mixed N/S donor atoms was found, confirming significant coordination spheres rearrangement occurring at the copper precursor together with the reduction in some Cu(II) to Cu(I). Such topology enables significant simplification of the magnetic properties modeling by assuming magnetic coupling inside {Ni^IICu^II₂} trinuclear units separated by diamagnetic [Cu(NCS)(SCN)₃]^3- linkers. Compound 3 shows three discrete mononuclear units connected by N-H…N and N-H…S hydrogen bonds. Analysis of XAS proves that the average ligand character and the covalency of the unoccupied metal d-based orbitals for copper(II) and nickel(II) increase in the following order: 1 → 2 → 3. In 1 and 2, a weak ferromagnetic coupling between copper(II) and nickel(II) was found, but in 2, additional and stronger antiferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions prevailed. Compound 3, as an ionic pair, shows, as expected, a spin-only magnetic moment.

Dielectric Relaxation and Dielectric Switching Behaviors in (N,N-Diisopropylethylamine) Tetrachloroantimonate(III)

Dielectric switches have drawn renewed attention to the study of their many potential applications with the adjustable switch temperatures (T_s ). Herein, a novel antimony-based halide semiconductor, (N,N-diisopropylethylamine) tetrachloroantimonate ((DIPEA)SbCl₄ , DIPEA⁺ =N,N-diisopropylethylamine), with dielectric relaxation behavior and dielectric switches has been successfully synthesized. This compound, consisting of coordinated anion S b C l 4 ∞ - ${{\left[{{\rm S}{\rm b}{\rm C}{\rm l}}_{4}\right]}_{\infty }^{-}}$ chains and isolated DIPEA⁺ cations, undergoes an isostructural order-disorder phase transition and shows a step-like dielectric anomaly, which can function as a frequency-tuned dielectric switch with highly adjustable switch temperature (T_s ). Variable-temperature single-crystal structure analyses and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations give information about the general mechanisms of molecular dynamics. This work enriches the dielectric switch family and proves that hybrid metal halides are promising candidates for switchable physical or chemical properties.

Two Manganese(II)-Based Hybrid Multifunctional Phase Transition Materials with Strong Photoluminescence, High Quantum Yield, and Switchable Dielectric Properties: (C6NH16)2MnBr4 and (C7NH18)2MnBr4

Multifunctional materials have always been an attractive research area, but how to combine multiple excellent properties in one compound remains a considerable challenge. Organic-inorganic hybrid compounds are widely used in the design of such materials due to their rich properties and flexible assembly. Herein, two new manganese(II)-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, (C₆NH₁₆)₂MnBr₄ (1) and (C₇NH₁₈)₂MnBr₄ (2), are prepared by the solution method. Compounds 1 and 2 both emit extremely strong green light under UV excitation, with high quantum yields of 45.93 and 50.98%, respectively. In addition, reversible solid-state phase transitions and obvious switchable dielectric properties are shown at 378/366 and 361/352 K, respectively. The coexistence of the dual stimulus-response characteristics of temperature and light in compounds 1 and 2 opens a new path for exploring more multifunctional phase transition materials.

Insights into the Molecular Dynamics of Quasi-Spherical (Chloromethyl)triethylammonium Confined in a Weakly Bound Ionic Cocrystal

Here, we report a weakly bound ionic cocrystal, (Et₃NCH₂Cl)₂[ZnCl₄], which undergoes a reversible structural phase transition owing to the switched molecular dynamics of the quasi-spherical (Et₃NCH₂Cl)⁺ cation from static to dynamic. Interestingly, a unique rolling and moving mechanism is uncovered for such a cation in the high-temperature phase, where its two methylene groups exhibit different kinetic energy barriers. This study provides a meaningful insight into the solid-state molecular dynamics of large-size quasi-spherical molecules that contain both a rigid core and flexible shell.

A series of dynamic single crystals of [MII(en)3]SO4 (M = Ni, Mn, and Cd) shows tunable dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion

A series of dynamic single crystals with a chemical formula of [M^II(en)₃]SO₄ (en = ethylene and M^II = Ni^II, Mn^II, and Cd^II) was synthesized. As the temperature decreases, these materials exhibit dielectric switching in the vicinity of the phase transition point accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansion in the cell parameters as a consequence of the order-disorder structural change of SO2-4 in a cavity surrounded by five [M^II(en)₃]²⁺ complex cations. Because the variation of metal centers with different ionic radii changes the shape of the complex cation, which affects the distribution of hydrogen-bond interactions around the SO2-4, the dynamic motion of SO2-4 is substantially tuned. Correspondingly, the dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion of materials were largely shifted, especially in the single crystals of [Mn^II(en)₃]SO₄, whose structural change is distinctly different from the crystals of Ni(II) and Cd(II). The detailed structural mechanism accounting for the different physical properties of these materials was discussed.

Growth direction dependent separate-channel charge transport in the organic weak charge-transfer co-crystal of anthracene-DTTCNQ

Co-crystallization is an efficient way of molecular crystal engineering to tune the electronic properties of organic semiconductors. In this work, we synthesized anthracene-4,8-bis(dicyanomethylene)4,8-dihydrobenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']-dithiophene (DTTCNQ) single crystals as a template to study the crystal growth direction dependent charge transport properties and attempted to elucidate the mechanism by proposing a separate-channel charge transport model. Single-crystal anthracene-DTTCNQ field-effect transistors showed that ambipolar transport properties could be observed in all crystal growth directions. Furthermore, upon changing the measured crystal directions, the electronic properties experienced a weak change from n-type dominated ambipolar, balanced ambipolar, to p-type dominated ambipolar properties. The theoretical calculations at density functional theory (DFT) and higher theory levels suggested that the anthracene-DTTCNQ co-crystal motif was a weak charge-transfer complex, in line with the experiment. Furthermore, the detailed theoretical analysis also indicated that electron or hole transport properties originated from separated channels formed by DTTCNQ or anthracene molecules. We thus proposed a novel separate-channel transport mechanism to support additional theoretical analysis and calculations. The joint experimental and theoretical efforts in this work suggest that the engineering of co-crystallization of weak charge-transfer complexes can be a practical approach for achieving tuneable ambipolar charge transport properties by the rational choice of co-crystal formers.

Anisotropic fluid with phototunable dielectric permittivity

Dielectric permittivity, a measure of polarisability, is a fundamental parameter that dominates various physical phenomena and properties of materials. However, it remains a challenge to control the dielectric permittivity of materials reversibly over a large range. Herein, we report an anisotropic fluid with photoresponsive dielectric permittivity (200 < ε < 18,000) consisting of a fluorinated liquid-crystalline molecule (96 wt%) and an azobenzene-tethered phototrigger (4 wt%). The reversible trans-cis isomerisation of the phototrigger under blue and green light irradiation causes a switch between two liquid-crystalline phases that exhibit different dielectric permittivities, with a rapid response time (<30 s) and excellent reversibility (~100 cycles). This anisotropic fluid can be used as a flexible photovariable capacitor that, for example, allows the reversible modulation of the sound frequency over a wide range (100 < f < 8500 Hz) in a remote manner using blue and green wavelengths.

Light stimuli are widely used to control material properties, yet it remains challenging to reversibly photocontrol the dielectric permittivity. Nishikawa et al. achieve this goal in an anisotropic fluid via its liquid crystal phase transition induced by isomerization of an azobenzene-tethered phototrigger.

Metal ion modulation triggers dielectric double switching and green fluorescence in A2MX4-type compounds

Multifunctional switching materials show great potential for applications in sensors, smart switches, and other fields due to their ability to integrate different physical channels in one single device. However, multifunctional responsive materials with multiple switching and luminescence properties have rarely been reported. Here, we report three organic-inorganic hybrids: [TMAA]₂[CoCl₄] (compound 1), [TMAA]₂[CdBr₄] (compound 2) and [TMAA]₂[MnCl₄] (compound 3). Compound 1 and compound 2 undergo two reversible phase transitions at high temperature (328.95/359.25 K and 350.45/393.15 K, respectively). Since the inorganic skeleton has a strong influence on the luminescence properties of such structured substances, Cd and Co were replaced with Mn, after which compound 3 was obtained as expected. The above strategy triggered bright green luminescence with a quantum yield of 35.19%, and significantly increased the phase transition temperature of compound 3 to above 400 K. The above results show that the regulation of the inorganic skeleton provides a new strategy for researchers to develop dual phase change/luminous materials.

An Exceptional Thermally Induced Four-State Nonlinear Optical Switch Arising from Stepwise Molecular Dynamic Changes in a New Hybrid Salt

Switching materials in channels of nonlinear optics (NLOs) are of particular interest in NLO material science. Numerous crystalline NLO switches based on structural phase transition have emerged, but most of them reveal a single-step switch between two different second-harmonic-generation (SHG) states, and only very rare cases involve three or more SHG states. Herein, we report a new organic-inorganic hybrid salt, (Me₃ NNH₂ )₂ [CdI₄ ], which is an unprecedented case of a reversible three-step NLO switch between SHG-silent, -medium, -low, and -high states, with high contrasts of 25.5/4.3/9.2 in a temperature range of 213-303 K. By using the combined techniques of variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal structural analyses, dielectric constants, solid-state ¹³ C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Hirshfeld surface analyses, we disclose that this four-state switchable SHG behavior is highly associated with the stepwise-changed molecular dynamics of the polar organic cations. This finding demonstrates well the complexity of molecular dynamics in simple hybrid salts and their potential in designing new advanced multistep switching materials.

Trojan Horse Thiocyanate: Induction and Control of High Proton Conductivity in CPO-27/MOF-74 Metal-Organic Frameworks by Metal Selection and Solvent-Free Mechanochemical Dosing

Proton-conducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been gaining attention for their role as solid-state electrolytes in various devices for energy conversion and storage. Here, we present a convenient strategy for inducing and tuning of superprotonic conductivity in MOFs with open metal sites via postsynthetic incorporation of charge carriers enabled by solvent-free mechanochemistry and anion coordination. This scalable approach is demonstrated using a series of CPO-27/MOF-74 [M₂(dobdc); M = Mg²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺; dobdc = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate] materials loaded with various stoichiometric amounts of NH₄SCN. The modified materials are not achievable by conventional immersion in solutions. Periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, supported by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction, provide structures of the modified MOFs including positions of inserted ions inside the [001] channels. Despite the same type and concentration of proton carriers, the MOFs can be arranged in the increasing order of conductivity (Ni < Zn < Mg), which strongly correlates with amounts of water vapor adsorbed. We conclude that the proton conductivity of CPO-27 materials can be controlled over a few orders of magnitude by metal selection and mechanochemical dosing of ammonium thiocyanate. The dosing of a solid is shown for the first time as a useful, simple, and ecological method for the control of material conductivity.

Unprecedented Improvement of Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion Efficiency to 87.2% by Ultrafast Non-radiative Decay of Excited States of Self-Assembly Cocrystal

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion is of great interest in many fields. Here, a self-assembly organic cocrystal (N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)) with strong absorption in NIR range is constructed, with widespread absorption (200-1500 nm) and very high NIR photothermal conversion efficiency (87.2%). Essentially, in this cocrystal, a small HOMO-LUMO gap of donor-acceptor pair boosts the absorption ability of this cocrystal in the NIR range. The mixed stacking structure significantly enhances the intermolecular interactions as well as the electron-hole delocalization, suppressing the emission processes, leading to nonradiative decay processes from excited states. Strong intermolecular interactions enable the cocrystal to have dense electronic energy levels, leading to a high proportion (94.4%) vibrational cooling and internal conversion processes with ultrafast excited-state relaxation (0.12 ps), which contributes to high NIR photothermal conversion efficiency. Furthermore, the cocrystal has exhibited capable ability for being an excellent candidate for a NIR photothermal therapy agent.

Multifunctional rare earth molecular ferroelectrics with a piezoelectric response: ((nBu)4N)3[Ce(NO3)4(SCN)2]((CH3CH2CH2CH2)4N = tetrabutylammonium)

A new type of multipolar rare earth molecular ferroelectric: ((nBu)4N)3[Ce(NO3)4(SCN)2] (BuCH3CH2CH2CH2)4N), undergoes a high-temperature ferroelectric phase transition, possesses flexible switchable SHG effect, moderate spontaneous polarization and a narrow band gap.

A polar oxyhalogen-vanadate compound (C5NH13Cl)2VOCl4 with optical and two-staged dielectric switch behavior

Polar organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been applied in ferroelectricity, as well as in devices based on nonlinear optical and piezoelectricity properties. Here, we used a rectangular pyramid structure of [VOCl4]2- to construct a polar compound (C5NH13Cl)2VOCl4 (1). Compound 1 crystallized in the monoclinic P21 space group. Coexistence of nonlinear optical switching behavior (space-group change from P21 to P21/n) and two-staged thermosensitive dielectric switching properties could be achieved under the stimulus of temperature. Our findings provide an effective approach for construction of polar materials.

Two new compounds were obtained by assembling the [(2-methoxy-5-nitro-anilinium)(18-crown-6)]+ cation with non-polar PF6- and polar SO3CF3- anions, respectively. Benefiting from its polar anion, the SO3CF3- compound reveals a more significant dielectric switching behaviour during phase transition, demonstrating an effective strategy to enhance the dielectric property by adding polar components.

Designing and Constructing a High-Temperature Molecular Ferroelectric by Anion and Cation Replacement in a Simple Crown Ether Clathrate

Molecular ferroelectrics have displayed a promising future since they are light-weight, flexible, environmentally friendly and easily synthesized, compared to traditional inorganic ferroelectrics. However, how to precisely design a molecular ferroelectric from a non-ferroelectric phase transition molecular system is still a great challenge. Here we designed and constructed a molecular ferroelectric by double regulation of the anion and cation in a simple crown ether clathrate, 4, [K(18-crown-6)]⁺ [PF₆ ]^- . By replacing K⁺ and PF₆ ^- with H₃ O⁺ and [FeCl₄ ]^- respectively, we obtained a new molecular ferroelectric [H₃ O(18-crown-6)]⁺ [FeCl₄ ]^- , 1. Compound 1 undergoes a para-ferroelectric phase transition near 350 K with symmetry change from P21/n to the Pmc21 space group. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis suggests that the phase transition was mainly triggered by the displacement motion of H₃ O⁺ and [FeCl₄ ]^- ions and twist motion of 18-crown-6 molecule. Strikingly, compound 1 shows high a Curie temperature (350 K), ultra-strong second harmonic generation signals (nearly 8 times of KDP), remarkable dielectric switching effect and large spontaneous polarization. We believe that this research will pave the way to design and build high-quality molecular ferroelectrics as well as their application in smart materials.

Covalently Bonded Pillared Layered Bromoplumbate with High Thermal Stability: High Capacitance Gain after Photoinduced Electron Transfer

Improving the stability and photoelectric properties are current aims in the field of inorganic-organic hybrid lead halides. In this work, a new covalently bonded pillared layered bromoplumbate, [Pb₃Br₆(CV)]_n, was prepared using a photoactive zwitterion viologen, N,N'-4,4'-bipyridiniodipropionate (CV), as a ligand. It has a high thermal stability in air and shows a remarkable increase of capacitance after photoinduced electron transfer (PIET). The observed dielectric switch ratio of ∼689% at 3 kHz exceeded all reported values at room temperature for switchable dielectric materials. The capacitance gain was derived from the redistribution of electrons after PIET from the lead-halide layer to organic π-aggregates, so that the activation energy of hopping polarizability was significantly reduced.

Ultralarge Dielectric Relaxation and Self-Recovery Triggered by Hydrogen-Bonded Polar Components

Subtle integration of rotatable polar components into dielectric crystals can contribute significantly to adjustable switching temperatures ( T_s) and dielectric relaxation behaviors. Currently, one of the biggest challenges lies in the design of optimal polar components with moderate motion resistance in a crystalline system. In this work, we demonstrate that under refrigerator conditions, rotatable hydrogen-bonded one-dimensional (1D) cationic chains, {[C₂H₆N₅]⁺} _n (C₂H₆N₅ = 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazolinium), and two-dimensional (2D) anionic layers, {[(H₂O)₂·SO₄]^2-} _n, can be generated in an organic salt, 3 ([C₂H₆N₅]₂·[(H₂O)₂·SO₄]). Compared with the nonhydrated precursor, 2 ([C₂H₇N₅]·[SO₄]), the rotation of these 1D and 2D ionic species triggers a reversible phase transition and dielectric switching in 3. In addition, the significantly sluggish rotation of the 1D cationic chains from parallel to unparallel stacking and the counter-clockwise rotation of the 2D anionic layers, compared with their reverse processes, induce a frequency-dependent dielectric response with a more highly adjustable heating T_s↑ than the cooling T_s↓. More importantly, 3 possesses excellent self-recovery ability attributed to the highly dynamic character of the hydrogen-bonded ionic species. The strategy here can provide a fairly good model for designing dielectric crystals with desired rotatable polar components.

Switchable Dielectric Phase Transition Triggered by Pendulum-Like Motion in an Ionic Co-crystal

Molecular-based ionic co-crystals, which have the merits of low-cost/easy fabrication processes and flexible structure and functionality, have already exhibited tremendous potential in molecular memory switches and other electric devices. However, dipole (ON/OFF switching) triggering is a huge challenge. Here, we introduce a pendulum-like dynamic strategy to induce the order-disorder transition of a co-crystal [C₅ H₇ N₃ Cl]₃ [Sb₂ Br₉ ] (compound 1). Here, the anion and cation act as a stator and a pendulum-like rotor (the source of the dielectric switch), respectively. The temperature-dependent dielectric and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses reveal that 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition, which stems from the order-disorder transition of the cations. The thermal ON/OFF switchable motions make 1 a promising candidate to promote the development of bulk crystals as artificial intelligent dielectric materials. In addition, the pendulum-like molecular dynamics and distinct arrangements of two coexisting ions with a notable offset effect promotes/hinders dipolar reorientation after dielectric transition and provides a rarely observed but fairly useful and feasible strategy for understanding and modulating the dipole motion in crystalline electrically polarizable materials.
