Controlled Asymmetric Charge Distribution of Active Centers in Conjugated Polymers for Oxygen Reduction

High-Performance Room Temperature Ammonia Sensors Based on Pure Organic Molecules Featuring B-N Covalent Bond

Exploring organic semiconductor gas sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity is crucial for the development of sensor technology. Herein, for the first time, a promising chemiresistive organic polymer P-BNT based on a novel π-conjugated triarylboron building block is reported, showcasing an excellent responsivity over 30 000 (Ra/Rg) against 40 ppm of NH3, which is ≈3300 times higher than that of its B-N organic small molecule BN-H. More importantly, a molecular induction strategy to weaken the bond dissociation energy between polymer and NH3 caused by strong acid-base interaction is further executed to optimize the response and recovery time. As a result, the BN-H/P-BNT system with rapid response and recovery times can still exhibit a high responsivity of 718, which is among the highest reported NH3 chemiresistive sensors. Supported by in situ FTIR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, it is revealed that the N-H fractions in BN-H small molecule promoted the charge distribution on phenyl groups, which increases charge delocalization and is more conducive to gas adsorption in such molecular systems. Notably, these distinctive small molecules also promoted charge transfer and enhanced electron concentration of the P-BNT sensing polymer, thus achieving superior B-N-containing organic molecules with excellent sensing performance.

Positional Thiophene Isomerization: A Geometric Strategy for Precisely Regulating the Electronic State of Covalent Organic Frameworks to Boost Oxygen Reduction

With the oxygen conversion efficiency of metal-free carbon-based fuel cells dramatically improved, the building blocks of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) raised principal concerns on the catalytic active sites with indistinct electronic states. Herein, to address this issue, we demonstrate COFs for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by regulating the edge-hanging thiophene units, and the molecular geometries are further modulated via positional thiophene isomerization strategy, affording isomeric COF-α with 2-substitution and COF-β with 3-substitution on the frameworks. The electronic states and intermediate adsorption ability are well-regulated through geometric modification, resulting in controllable chemical activity and local density of π-electrons. Notably, the introduction of thiophene units with different substitution positions into a pristine pure carbon-based COF model COF-Ph achieves excellent activity with a half-wave potential of 0.76 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, which is higher than most of those metal-free or metal-based electrocatalysts. Utilizing the combination of theoretical prediction and in situ Raman spectra, we show that the isomeric thiophene skeleton (COF-α and COF-β) can induce the dangling unit activation, accurately identifying the pentacyclic-carbon (thiophene α-position) adjacent to sulfur atom as active sites. The results suggest that the isomeric dangling groups in COFs are suitable for the ORR with promising geometry construction.

Confined Synthesis of Dual-Atoms Within Pores of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Dual-atom catalysts exhibit higher reactivity and selectivity than the single-atom catalysts. The pyrolysis of bimetal salt precursors is the most typical method for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts; however, the finiteness of bimetal salts limits the variety of dual-atomic catalysts. In this study, a confined synthesis strategy for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts is developed. Owing to the in situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in the pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the migration and aggregation of metal atoms are suppressed adequately during the pyrolysis process. The resultant catalyst contains abundant Zn─Co dual atomic sites with 2.8 wt.% Zn and 0.5 wt.% Co. The catalyst exhibits high reactivity toward oxygen reduction reaction with a half-wave potential of 0.86 V, which is superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Zn atoms in the Zn─Co dual atomic sites promote the formation of intermediate OOH*, and thus contribute to high catalytic performance. This study provides new insights into the design of dual-atom catalysts using COFs.

Charging modulation of the pyridine nitrogen of covalent organic frameworks for promoting oxygen reduction reaction

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are ideal templates for constructing metal-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction due to their highly tuneable skeletons and controllable porous channels. However, the development of highly active sites within COFs remains challenging due to their limited electron-transfer capabilities and weak binding affinities for reaction intermediates. Herein, we constructed highly active catalytic centres by modulating the electronic states of the pyridine nitrogen atoms incorporated into the frameworks of COFs. By incorporating different pyridine units (such as pyridine, ionic pyridine, and ionic imidazole units), we tuned various properties including dipole moments, reductive ability, hydrophilicity, and binding affinities towards reaction intermediates. Notably, the ionic imidazole COF (im-PY-BPY-COF) exhibited greater activity than the neutral COF (PY-BPY-COF) and ionic pyridine COF (ion-PY-BPY-COF). Specifically, im-PY-BPY-COF demonstrated a half-wave potential of 0.80 V in 0.1 M KOH, outperforming other metal-free COFs. Theoretical calculations and in situ synchrotron radiation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the carbon atoms in the ionic imidazole rings improved the activity by facilitating binding of the intermediate OOH* and promoting the desorption of OH*. This study provides new insights into the design of highly active metal-like COF catalysts.

Recent Advances in Mechanistic Understanding of Metal-Free Carbon Thermocatalysis and Electrocatalysis with Model Molecules

Metal-free carbon, as the most representative heterogeneous metal-free catalysts, have received considerable interests in electro- and thermo-catalytic reactions due to their impressive performance and sustainability. Over the past decade, well-designed carbon catalysts with tunable structures and heteroatom groups coupled with various characterization techniques have proposed numerous reaction mechanisms. However, active sites, key intermediate species, precise structure-activity relationships and dynamic evolution processes of carbon catalysts are still rife with controversies due to the monotony and limitation of used experimental methods. In this Review, we summarize the extensive efforts on model catalysts since the 2000s, particularly in the past decade, to overcome the influences of material and structure limitations in metal-free carbon catalysis. Using both nanomolecule model and bulk model, the real contribution of each alien species, defect and edge configuration to a series of fundamentally important reactions, such as thermocatalytic reactions, electrocatalytic reactions, were systematically studied. Combined with in situ techniques, isotope labeling and size control, the detailed reaction mechanisms, the precise 2D structure-activity relationships and the rate-determining steps were revealed at a molecular level. Furthermore, the outlook of model carbon catalysis has also been proposed in this work.

Atomic-level polarization in electric fields of defects for electrocatalysis

The thriving field of atomic defect engineering towards advanced electrocatalysis relies on the critical role of electric field polarization at the atomic scale. While this is proposed theoretically, the spatial configuration, orientation, and correlation with specific catalytic properties of materials are yet to be understood. Here, by targeting monolayer MoS2 rich in atomic defects, we pioneer the direct visualization of electric field polarization of such atomic defects by combining advanced electron microscopy with differential phase contrast technology. It is revealed that the asymmetric charge distribution caused by the polarization facilitates the adsorption of H*, which originally activates the atomic defect sites for catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Then, it has been experimentally proven that atomic-level polarization in electric fields can enhance catalytic HER activity. This work bridges the long-existing gap between the atomic defects and advanced electrocatalysis by directly revealing the angstrom-scale electric field polarization and correlating it with the as-tuned catalytic properties of materials; the methodology proposed here could also inspire future studies focusing on catalytic mechanism understanding and structure-property-performance relationship.

Adapting Synthetic Models of Heme/Cu Sites to Energy-Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction

In nature, cytochrome c oxidases catalyze the 4e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the heme/Cu site, in which CuI is used to assist O2 activation. Because of the thermodynamic barrier to generate CuI , synthetic Fe-porphyrin/Cu complexes usually show moderate electrocatalytic ORR activity. We herein report on a Co-corrole/Co complex 1-Co for energy-efficient electrocatalytic ORR. By hanging a CoII ion over Co corrole, 1-Co realizes electrocatalytic 4e- ORR with a half-wave potential of 0.89 V versus RHE, which is outstanding among corrole-based electrocatalysts. Notably, 1-Co outperforms Co corrole hanged with CuII or ZnII . We revealed that the hanging CoII ion can provide an electron to improve O2 binding thermodynamically and dynamically, a function represented by the biological CuI ion of the heme/Cu site. This work is significant to present a remarkable ORR electrocatalyst and to show the vital role of a second-sphere redox-active metal ion in promoting O2 binding and activation.

Phosphorus-Mediated Local Charge Distribution of N-Configuration Adsorption Sites with Enhanced Zincophilicity and Hydrophilicity for High-Energy-Density Zn-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Tailor-made carbonaceous-based cathodes with zincophilicity and hydrophilicity are highly desirable for Zn-ion storage applications, but it remains a great challenge to achieve both advantages in the synthesis. In this work, a template electrospinning strategy is developed to synthesize nitrogen and phosphorous co-doped hollow porous carbon nanofibers (N, P-HPCNFs), which deliver a high capacity of 230.7 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 , superior rate capability of 131.0 mAh g-1 at 20 A g-1 , and a maximum energy density of 196.10 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 155.53 W kg-1 . Density functional theory calculations (DFT) reveal that the introduced P dopants regulate the distribution of local charge density of carbon materials and therefore facilitate the adsorption of Zn ions due to the increased electronegativity of pyridinic-N. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations indicate that the doped P species induce a series of polar sites and create a hydrophilic microenvironment, which decreases the impedance between the electrode and the electrolyte and therefore accelerates the reaction kinetics. The marriage of ex situ/in situ experimental analyses and theoretical simulations uncovers the origin of the enhanced zincophilicity and hydrophilicity of N, P-HPCNFs for energy storage, which accounts for the faster ion migration and electrochemical processes.

A carbon quantum layer modified BiVO4 photoelectrochemical aptamer biosensor for ultra-sensitive cTnI biomarker detection based on the interface nephelauxetic effect and heterojunction assistance

The sensitivity and specificity of a semiconductor photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptamer biosensor are determined by the separation and transport of the photoinduced carriers as well as aptamer probe immobilization. In this study, an in situ thermal transformation organic polymer strategy was employed to produce an ∼2.5 nm carbon quantum layer on the surface of the BiVO4(BVO) photoanode. Experimental tests and theoretical calculations have revealed that this carbon quantum layer-coated BVO(C@BVO) heterostructure could generate surface charge depletion regions through an interface nephelauxetic effect. These charge depletion regions facilitated the efficient immobilization of DNA aptamer probes of the acute myocardial infarction biomarker cardiac troponin I (cTnI), while showing almost no immobilization capability on a pure-phase C quantum layer or BVO crystals. Simultaneously, the formation of the C@BVO heterostructure also enhanced the directional transport of photo-generated holes from BVO to the C quantum layer. Due to the above reasons, the C@BVO PEC aptamer biosensor achieved a linear detection range for cTnI from 10-14 g L-1 to 10-10 g L-1, with a record detection limit (LOD) of ∼0.33 × 10-14 g L-1 (N > 3). Meanwhile, the biosensor also demonstrated well the detection reproducibility and specificity for cTnI detection. Therefore, the strategy of using a carbon quantum layer-coated PEC electrode shows good potential to develop PEC biosensors with high sensitivity, specificity, and robustness.

DFT-assisted low-dimensional carbon-based electrocatalysts design and mechanism study: a review

Low-dimensional carbon-based (LDC) materials have attracted extensive research attention in electrocatalysis because of their unique advantages such as structural diversity, low cost, and chemical tolerance. They have been widely used in a broad range of electrochemical reactions to relieve environmental pollution and energy crisis. Typical examples include hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Traditional "trial and error" strategies greatly slowed down the rational design of electrocatalysts for these important applications. Recent studies show that the combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental research is capable of accurately predicting the structures of electrocatalysts, thus revealing the catalytic mechanisms. Herein, current well-recognized collaboration methods of theory and practice are reviewed. The commonly used calculation methods and the basic functionals are briefly summarized. Special attention is paid to descriptors that are widely accepted as a bridge linking the structure and activity and the breakthroughs for high-volume accurate prediction of electrocatalysts. Importantly, correlated multiple descriptors are used to systematically describe the complicated interfacial electrocatalytic processes of LDC catalysts. Furthermore, machine learning and high-throughput simulations are crucial in assisting the discovery of new multiple descriptors and reaction mechanisms. This review will guide the further development of LDC electrocatalysts for extended applications from the aspect of DFT computations.

Tuning Electronic State and Charge Transport in B←N-Containing 2D Polymer Heterostructures with Efficient Photocatalytic Performance

Linear-conjugated polymers (LCPs) are excellent semiconductor photocatalysts. However, its inherent amorphous structures and simple electron transport channels restrict efficient photoexcited charge separation and transfer. Herein, "2D conjugated engineering" is employed to design high-crystalline polymer photocatalysts with multichannel charge transport by introducing alkoxyphenyl sidechains. The electronic state structure and electron transport pathways of the LCPs are investigated using experimental and theoretical calculations. Consequently, the 2D B←N-containing polymers (2DPBN) exhibit excellent photoelectric characteristics, which enable the efficient separation of electron-hole and rapidly transfer photogenerated carriers to the catalyst surface for efficient catalytic reactions. Significantly, the further hydrogen evolution of 2DPBN-4F heterostructures can be achieved by increasing the fluorine content of the backbones. This study highlights that the rational design of LCP photocatalysts is an effective strategy to spur further interest in photofunctional polymer material applications.

Intrinsic spin shielding effect in platinum-rare-earth alloy boosts oxygen reduction activity

Oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) involve a multistep proton-coupled electron process accompanied by the conversion of the apodictic spin configuration. Understanding the role of spin configurations of metals in the adsorption and desorption of oxygen intermediates during ORRs is critical for the design of efficient ORR catalysts. Herein, a platinum-rare-earth-metal-based alloy catalyst, Pt2Gd, is introduced to reveal the role of spin configurations in the catalytic activity of materials. The catalyst exhibits a unique intrinsic spin reconfiguration because of interactions between the Gd-4f and Pt-5d orbitals. The adsorption and desorption of the oxygen species are optimized by modifying the spin symmetry and electronic structures of the material for increased ORR efficiency. The Pt2Gd alloy exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.95 V and a superior mass activity of 1.5 A·mgPt-1 in a 0.1 M HClO4 electrolyte, as well as higher durability than conventional Pt/C catalysts. Theoretical calculations have proven that the spin shielding effect of Gd pairs increases the spin symmetry of Pt-5d orbitals and adsorption preferences toward spin-polarized intermediates to facilitate ORR. This work clarifies the impact of modulating the intrinsic spin state of Pt through the interaction with the local high spin 4f orbital electrons in rare-earth metals, with the aim of boosting the spin-related oxygen reduction reaction, thus fundamentally contributing to the understanding of new descriptors that control ORR activity.

Recent advances of bifunctional catalysts for zinc air batteries with stability considerations: from selecting materials to reconstruction

With the growing depletion of traditional fossil energy resources and ongoing enhanced awareness of environmental protection, research on electrochemical energy storage techniques like zinc-air batteries is receiving close attention. A significant amount of work on bifunctional catalysts is devoted to improving OER and ORR reaction performance to pave the way for the commercialization of new batteries. Although most traditional energy storage systems perform very well, their durability in practical applications is receiving less attention, with issues such as carbon corrosion, reconstruction during the OER process, and degradation, which can seriously impact long-term use. To be able to design bifunctional materials in a bottom-up approach, a summary of different kinds of carbon materials and transition metal-based materials will be of assistance in selecting a suitable and highly active catalyst from the extensive existing non-precious materials database. Also, the modulation of current carbon materials, aimed at increasing defects and vacancies in carbon and electron distribution in metal-N-C is introduced to attain improved ORR performance of porous materials with fast mass and air transfer. Finally, the reconstruction of catalysts is introduced. The review concludes with comprehensive recommendations for obtaining high-performance and highly-durable catalysts.

Precisely Orientating Atomic Array in One-Dimension Tellurium Microneedles Enhances Intrinsic Piezoelectricity for an Efficient Piezo-Catalytic Sterilization

Comprehensively understanding the interdependency between the orientated atomic array and intrinsic piezoelectricity in one-dimension (1D) tellurium (Te) crystals will greatly benefit their practical piezo-catalytic applications. Herein, we successfully synthesized the various 1D Te microneedles by precisely orientating the atomic growth orientation by tuning (100)/(110) planes ratios (Te-0.6, Te-0.3, Te-0.4) to reveal the secrets of piezoelectricity. Explicitly, the theoretical simulations and experimental results have solidly validated that the Te-0.6 microneedle grown along the [110] orientation possesses a stronger asymmetric distribution of Te atoms array causing the enhanced dipole moment and in-plane polarization, which boosts a higher transfer and separation efficiency of the electron and hole pairs and a higher piezoelectric potential under the same stress. Additionally, the orientated atomic array along the [110] has p antibonding states with a higher energy level, resulting in a higher CB potential and a broadened band gap. Meanwhile, it also has a much lower barrier toward the valid adsorption of H₂O and O₂ molecules over other orientations, effectively conducive to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for the efficient piezo-catalytic sterilization. Therefore, this study not only broadens the fundamental perspectives in understanding the intrinsic mechanism of piezoelectricity in 1D Te crystals but also provides a candidate 1D Te microneedle for practical piezo-catalytic applications.

Near- and Long-Range Electronic Modulation of Single Metal Sites to Boost CO2 Electrocatalytic Reduction

Tuning the electronic structure of the active center is effective to improve the intrinsic activity of single-atom catalysts but the realization of precise regulation remains challenging. Herein, a strategy of "synergistically near- and long-range regulation" is reported to effectively modulate the electronic structure of single-atom sites. ZnN₄ sites decorated with axial sulfur ligand in the first coordination and surrounded phosphorus atoms in the carbon matrix are successfully constructed in the hollow carbon supports (ZnN₄ S₁ /P-HC). ZnN₄ S₁ /P-HC exhibits excellent performance for CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) with a Faraday efficiency of CO close to 100%. The coupling of the CO₂ RR with thermodynamically favorable hydrazine oxidation reaction to replace oxygen evolution reaction in a two-electrode electrolyzer can greatly lower the cell voltage by 0.92 V at a current density of 5 mA cm^-2 , theoretically saving 46% of energy consumption. Theoretical calculation reveals that the near-range regulation with axial thiophene-S ligand and long-range regulation with neighboring P atoms can synergistically lead to the increase of electron localization around the Zn sites, which strengthens the adsorption of *COOH intermediate and therefore boosts the CO₂ RR.

Defects in Carbon-Based Materials for Electrocatalysis: Synthesis, Recognition, and Advances

ConspectusOwing to climate change and over-reliance on fossil fuels, the study and development of sustainable energy is of essential importance in the next few decades. In recent years, rapid advances have been witnessed in various power to gas electrocatalysis technologies including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for realizing the target of blue planet with carbon neutrality. Nevertheless, practical applications with superior performance and affordable cost are largely limited by the electrode materials because the reactions are regularly driven by precious metals such as platinum (Pt) or iridium (Ir) based catalysts. Therefore, it is of significance to develop novel electrocatalysts with high electroactivity and limited cost for boosting the commercialization of green hydrogen technology.Since nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes were first reported for enhanced ORR performance in 2009, the exploitation of carbon-based metal-free catalysts (CMFCs) as potential replacements for the precious metal electrocatalysts has become an attractive research field. To date, great progress has been made in developing new dopant strategies for CMFCs; however, the details of the catalytic mechanism and identification of active sites remain unclear, owing to the complexity in controlling the dopants and their homogeneity in carbon-based materials. To tackle this issue, our group has presented a series of works on defects catalyzing electrochemical reactions and proposed a defect catalysis mechanism since 2015. This theory is now widely accepted by the research community and has become a very important area in electrocatalysis worldwide.In this Account, we first present the defect theory for the reasonable design of defective carbon-based materials (DCMs) and subsequently summarize our previous works on the state-of-the-art defect engineering strategies to design DCMs possessing high activity, with the particular emphasis on the conjunction between defect structures and electrochemical performances. We also categorize recent defect modulation approaches on active sites in DCMs as well as showcase the advanced characterization techniques to confirm the types and densities of defects in DCMs. Finally, several perspectives on the challenges and future research opportunities of this exciting field are proposed. Remarkably, rapid advances of DCMs possessing both high electrochemical activities and low cost as a new generation of electrode materials may greatly facilitate the deployment of sustainable energy infrastructures.

Step by Step Induced Growth of Zinc-Metal Interface on Graphdiyne for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) promise high energy density, low redox potential, low cost and safety; however, their cycle performances are seriously insufficient to restrict the progress in this field. We propose a new concept of atomic electrode formed on the graphdiyne (GDY). This new idea electrode was synthesized by selectively, uniformly, and stably anchoring Zn atoms on GDY at the beginning of plating. The Zn atoms are induced to grow into larger size Zn clusters, which continue to grow into nanoflat. Finally, a new heterojunction interface is formed on GDY without any Zn dendrites and side reactions, even at high current densities. Such stepwise induction of growth greatly suppresses the formation of Zn dendrites, resulting in high electroplating/stripping reversibility and lifespan of AZIBs.

Crystalline-Amorphous Ni3S2-NiMoO4 Heterostructure for Durable Urea Electrolysis-Assisted Hydrogen Production at High Current Density

Developing bifunctional catalysts with good performance at a high current density for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can effectively relieve the severe environmental and energy pressures. Herein, amorphous NiMoO₄ decorated Ni₃S₂ grown on nickel foam (Ni₃S₂-NiMoO₄/NF) is prepared to accelerate UOR and HER. The crystalline-amorphous heterostructure could regulate the interfacial electron structure to reduce the electron density near Ni₃S₂ for optimizing UOR and HER. The decoration of NiMoO₄ enhances its anti-poisoning ability for CO-intermediate species to show good stability at high current densities. Meanwhile, the nano-/microstructure with high hydrophilicity improves mass transfer and the accessibility of electrolyte. Driving high current densities of ±1000 mA cm^-2, it merely needs 1.38 V (UOR) and -263 mV (HER). For urea electrolysis, it can deliver 1000 mA cm^-2 at 1.73 V and stably operate at 500 mA cm^-2 for 120 h. Therefore, this study provides new ideas for durable urea electrolysis-assisted H₂ production.

Plasmon-Enhanced Electrocatalysis of Conductive Polymer-Based Nano-Heterojunction for Small Molecule Metabolites Diagnostics

Conductive polymers are promising electrode candidates in the nonenzymatic catalytic detection of small molecule metabolites, due to the tunable electronic conductivity and versatile modifiability. However, the complex catalytic reaction pathway of conductive polymers results in lower detection sensitivity and a narrower linear range compared with clinical metal-based and carbon-based electrodes. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), characterized by deep strong light-matter coupling, has great potential in driving surface catalytic reactions at an ultrafast rate. Here, we constructed a salix argyracea-like polypyrrole nanowires/silver nanoparticles (PPy/AgNPs) heterojunction electrode using polydopamine as a dopant and chelator. Through cyclic voltammetry, the Mott-Schottky curve, and COMSOL simulation, we demonstrated that the LSPR-excited photocarriers enhanced PPy/AgNPs electrode electrocatalysis. Thus, the detection current response and linear range were significantly improved under the LSPR excitation when taking glucose and hydrogen peroxide as models of small molecule metabolites. Furthermore, we discussed the LSPR-enhanced detection mechanism of PPy/AgNPs electrode from the aspects of the Tafel slope, the apparent electron diffusion coefficient, and the charge transfer resistance. This strategy opens a new avenue toward the design of LSPR-enhanced conductive polymer electrodes.

Natural Compounds as DPP-4 Inhibitors: 3D-Similarity Search, ADME Toxicity, and Molecular Docking Approaches

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the most common diseases of the 21st century, caused by a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, high blood pressure, family history, and obesity. To date, there are no known complete cures for type 2 diabetes. To identify bioactive natural products (NPs) to manage type 2 diabetes, the NPs from the ZINC15 database (ZINC-NPs DB) were screened using a 3D shape similarity search, molecular docking approaches, and ADMETox approaches. Frequently, in silico studies result in asymmetric structures as “hit” molecules. Therefore, the asymmetrical FDA-approved diabetes drugs linagliptin (8-[(3R)-3-aminopiperidin-1-yl]-7-but-2-ynyl-3-methyl-1-[(4-methylquinazolin-2-yl)methyl]purine-2,6-dione), sitagliptin ((3R)-3-amino-1-[3-(trifluoromethyl)-6,8-dihydro-5H-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyrazin-7-yl]-4-(2,4,5-trifluorophenyl)butan-1-one), and alogliptin (2-[[6-[(3R)-3-aminopiperidin-1-yl]-3-methyl-2,4-dioxopyrimidin-1-yl]methyl]benzonitrile) were used as queries to virtually screen the ZINC-NPs DB and detect novel potential dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. The most promising NPs, characterized by the best sets of similarity and ADMETox features, were used during the molecular docking stage. The results highlight that 11 asymmetrical NPs out of 224,205 NPs are potential DPP-4 candidates from natural sources and deserve consideration for further in vitro/in vivo tests.

An Initial Covalent Organic Polymer with Closed-F Edges Directly for Proton-Exchange-Membrane Fuel Cells

Covalent organic polymers (COPs) are a class of rising electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to the atomically metrical control of the organic molecular components along with highly architectural robustness and thermodynamic stability even in acid or alkaline media. However, the direct application of pristine COPs as acidic ORR electrocatalysts, especially in device manner, e.g., in proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), remains a big challenge. Currently, the decoration toward electronic structures of active sites is considered a vital pathway to enhancing the acidic ORR activity of carbon-based electrocatalysts. Here, an initial F-decorated fully closed π-conjugated quasi-phthalocyanine COP (denoted as COP_BTC -F) is reported. The introduction of the closed-F edges stepwise drags more electrons from FeN₄ sites in COP_BTC -F into the catalyst margin, which weakens the occupied numbers of bonding orbitals between COP_BTC -F and OH* intermediates at the rate-determining step, exhibiting over five times intrinsic performance beyond the counterpart without F functionalities (termed as COP_BTC ). Significantly, the maximum power density utilizing COP_BTC -F as a cathode catalyst in PEMFCs is remarkably increased by an order of magnitude compared with COP_BTC , which is a stride forward among catalysts based on a pyrolysis-free conjugated-polymer network in device manner to date.

A distinctive semiconductor-metalloid heterojunction: unique electronic structure and enhanced CO2 photoreduction activity

Increasing the concentration and separation ability of charge carriers in photocatalysts has still been a crucial issue and challenge to achieve high CO₂ photoreduction performance. Here, we construct a distinctive heterojunction between semiconductor (CeO₂) and metalloid (CuS). It has been discovered that, different from conventional semiconductor and Schottky heterojunctions, in this system, electrons (e_sc^-) located at the conduction band (CB) of CeO₂ will transfer to the Fermi level in partially occupied band (CB) of CuS and accumulate there. Then, together with transition electrons (e_tr^-) excited from the CB below Fermi level or fully filled band (B_-1) of CuS, these e_sc^- will further transfer to the lowest unoccupied band (B₁) of CuS, finally participate in CO₂ reduction reaction. Because the concentration and separation efficiency of charge carriers has been obviously increased, this heterojunction exhibits remarkably enhanced CO₂ photoreduction performance. In-situ FTIR was conducted to explore the reaction process and the changes of intermediates on the surface of this catalyst during CO₂ photoreduction. Given that this type of heterojunction can only be established between a semiconductor and a metalloid and exhibits special electron transfer behavior, this work really provides an unconventional strategy for the design of photocatalysts with superior CO₂ photoreduction activity.
