Unveiling the Unique Roles of Metal Coordination and Modulator in the Polymorphism Control of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Synthesis and Characterization of Cerium-Oxo Clusters Capped by Acetylacetonate

Cerium-oxo clusters have applications in fields ranging from catalysis to electronics and also hold the potential to inform on aspects of actinide chemistry. Toward this end, a cerium-acetylacetonate (acac1-) monomeric molecule, Ce(acac)4 (Ce-1), and two acac1--decorated cerium-oxo clusters, [Ce10O8(acac)14(CH3O)6(CH3OH)2]·10.5MeOH (Ce-10) and [Ce12O12(OH)4(acac)16(CH3COO)2]·6(CH3CN) (Ce-12), were prepared and structurally characterized. The Ce(acac)4 monomer contains CeIV. Crystallographic data and bond valence summation values for the Ce-10 and Ce-12 clusters are consistent with both clusters having a mixture of CeIII and CeIV cations. Ce L3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, performed on Ce-10, showed contributions from both CeIII and CeIV. The Ce-10 cluster is built from a hexameric cluster, with six CeIV sites, that is capped by two dimeric CeIII units. By comparison, Ce-12, which formed upon dissolution of Ce-10 in acetonitrile, consists of a central decamer built from edge sharing CeIV hexameric units, and two monomeric CeIII sites that are bound on the outer corners of the inner Ce10 core. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry data for solutions prepared by dissolving Ce-10 in acetonitrile showed that the major ions could be attributed to Ce10 clusters that differed primarily in the number of acac1-, OH1-, MeO1-, and O2- ligands. Small angle X-ray scattering measurements for Ce-10 dissolved in acetonitrile showed structural units slightly larger than either Ce10 or Ce12 in solution, likely due to aggregation. Taken together, these results suggest that the acetylacetonate supported clusters can support diverse solution-phase speciation in organic solutions that could lead to stabilization of higher order cerium containing clusters, such as cluster sizes that are greater than the Ce10 and Ce12 reported herein.

Friends or Foes: Fundamental Principles of Th-Organic Scaffold Chemistry Using Zr-Analogs as a Guide

The fundamental interest in actinide chemistry, particularly for the development of thorium-based materials, is experiencing a renaissance owing to the recent and rapidly growing attention to fuel cycle reactors, radiological daughters for nuclear medicine, and efficient nuclear stockpile development. Herein, we uncover fundamental principles of thorium chemistry on the example of Th-based extended structures such as metal-organic frameworks in comparison with the discrete systems and zirconium extended analogs, demonstrating remarkable over two-and-half-year chemical stability of Th-based frameworks as a function of metal node connectivity, amount of defects, and conformational linker rigidity through comprehensive spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis as well as theoretical modeling. Despite exceptional chemical stability, we report the first example of studies focusing on the reactivity of the most chemically stable Th-based frameworks in comparison with the discrete Th-based systems such as metal-organic complexes and a cage, contrasting multicycle recyclability and selectivity (>97%) of the extended structures in comparison with the molecular compounds. Overall, the presented work not only establishes the conceptual foundation for evaluating the capabilities of Th-based materials but also represents a milestone for their multifaceted future and foreshadows their potential to shape the next era of actinide chemistry.

How Reproducible is the Synthesis of Zr-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks? An Interlaboratory Study

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of materials that offer great promise in various applications. However, the synthesis remains challenging: for example, a range of crystal structures can often be accessed from the same building blocks, which complicates the phase selectivity. Likewise, the high sensitivity to slight changes in synthesis conditions may cause reproducibility issues. This is crucial, as it hampers the research and commercialization of affected MOFs. Here, it presents the first-ever interlaboratory study of the synthetic reproducibility of two Zr-porphyrin MOFs, PCN-222 and PCN-224, to investigate the scope of this problem. For PCN-222, only one sample out of ten was phase pure and of the correct symmetry, while for PCN-224, three are phase pure, although none of these show the spatial linker order characteristic of PCN-224. Instead, these samples resemble dPCN-224 (disordered PCN-224), which has recently been reported. The variability in thermal behavior, defect content, and surface area of the synthesised samples are also studied. The results have important ramifications for field of metal-organic frameworks and their crystallization, by highlighting the synthetic challenges associated with a multi-variable synthesis space and flat energy landscapes characteristic of MOFs.

When Polymorphism in Metal-Organic Frameworks Enables Water Sorption Profile Tunability for Enhancing Heat Allocation and Water Harvesting Performance

The development of thermally driven water-sorption-based technologies relies on high-performing water vapor adsorbents. Here, polymorphism in Al-metal-organic frameworks is disclosed as a new strategy to tune the hydrophilicity of MOFs. This involves the formation of MOFs built from chains of either trans- or cis- µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra. Specifically, [Al(OH)(muc)] or MIP-211, is made of trans, trans-muconate linkers, and cis-µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra giving a 3D network with sinusoidal channels. The polymorph MIL-53-muc has a tiny change in the chain structure that results in a shift of the step position of the water isotherm from P/P0 ≈ 0.5 in MIL-53-muc, to P/P0 ≈ 0.3 in MIP-211. Solid-state NMR and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo reveal that the adsorption occurs initially between two hydroxyl groups of the chains, favored by the cis-positioning in MIP-211, resulting in a more hydrophilic behavior. Finally, theoretical evaluations show that MIP-211 would allow achieving a coefficient of performance for cooling (COPc) of 0.63 with an ultralow driving temperature of 60 °C, outperforming benchmark sorbents for small temperature lifts. Combined with its high stability, easy regeneration, huge water uptake capacity, green synthesis, MIP-211 is among the best adsorbents for adsorption-driven air conditioning and water harvesting from the air.

Adsorption and Detection of Iodine Species by a Thorium-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Actinide-bearing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) encompass intriguing structures and properties, but the radioactivity of actinide cripples their applications. Herein, we have constructed a new thorium-based MOF (Th-BDAT) as a bifunctional platform for the adsorption and detection of radioiodine, a more radioactive fission product that can readily spread through the atmosphere in its molecular form or via solution as anionic species. The iodine capture within the framework of Th-BDAT from both the vapor phase and the cyclohexane solution has been verified, showing that Th-BDAT features maximum I₂ adsorption capacities (Q_max) of 959 and 1046 mg/g, respectively. Notably, the Q_max of Th-BDAT toward I₂ from cyclohexane solution ranks among the highest value for Th-MOFs reported to date. Furthermore, incorporating highly extended and π-electron-rich BDAT^4- ligands renders Th-BDAT as a luminescent chemosensor whose emission can be selectively quenched by iodate with a detection limit of 1.367 μM. Our findings thus foreshadow promising directions that might unlock the full potential of actinide-based MOFs from the point of view of practical application.

Progress in solid state and coordination chemistry of actinides in China

In the past decade, the area of solid state chemistry of actinides has witnessed a rapid development in China, based on the significantly increased proportion of the number of actinide containing crystal structures reported by Chinese researchers from only 2% in 2010 to 36% in 2021. In this review article, we comprehensively overview the synthesis, structure, and characterizations of representative actinide solid compounds including oxo-compounds, organometallic compounds, and endohedral metallofullerenes reported by Chinese researchers. In addition, Chinese researchers pioneered several potential applications of actinide solid compounds in terms of adsorption, separation, photoelectric materials, and photo-catalysis, which are also briefly discussed. It is our hope that this contribution not only calls for further development of this area in China, but also arouses new research directions and interests in actinide chemistry and material sciences.

Energetic Systematics of Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Case Study of Al(III)-Trimesate MOF Isomers

Thermal stability and thermodynamic properties of aluminum(III)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (Al-BTC) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including MIL-96, MIL-100, and MIL-110, have been investigated through a suite of calorimetric and X-ray techniques. In situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC) revealed that these MOFs undergo thermal amorphization prior to ligand combustion. Thermal stabilities of Al-BTC MOFs follow the increasing order MIL-110 < MIL-96 < MIL-100, based on estimated amorphization temperatures. Their thermodynamic stabilities were directly measured by high-temperature drop combustion calorimetry. Normalized (per mole of Al) enthalpies of formation (ΔH*_f) of MIL-96, MIL-100, and MIL-110 from Al₂O_3, H₃BTC, and H₂O (only Al₂O₃ and H₃BTC for MIL-100) were determined to be -56.9 ± 13.7, -36.2 ± 17.9, and 62.8 ± 11.6 kJ/mol·Al, respectively. Our results demonstrate that MIL-96 and MIL-100 are thermodynamically favorable, while MIL-110 is metastable, in agreement with thermal and hydrothermal stability trends. The enthalpic preferences of MIL-96 and MIL-100 may be attributed to their shared trinuclear μ³-oxo-bridged (Al₃(μ₃-O)) secondary building units (SBUs) promoting stabilization of Al polyhedra by the ligands within these frameworks, in comparison to the sterically strained Al₈ octamer cluster cores formed in MIL-110. Furthermore, similar ΔH*_f of MIL-96 and MIL-100 explain their concurrent formation as physical mixtures often encountered during synthesis, implying the importance of kinetic factors that may facilitate the formation of Al-BTC framework isomers. More importantly, the normalized formation enthalpies of Al-BTC MOF isomers follow a negative correlation with the ratio of charged coordinated substituents to linkers (normalized per mole of Al within the MOF formula unit), with enthalpic preference given to systems with smaller (O^2- + OH^-)/ligand ratios. This trend has been successfully extended to the previously measured ΔH*_f of several Zn₄O-based frameworks (e.g., MOF-5, MOF-5(DEF), MOF-177, UMCM-1), all of which have been found to be metastable with respect to their dense phases (ZnO, H₂O, and ligands). The result suggests that carboxylate MOFs with higher metal coordination environments attain more enthalpic stabilization from the coordinated ligands. Thus, the formation of some lanthanide/actinide, transition metal, and main group carboxylate frameworks may be energetically more favored, which, however, requires further studies.

Recent advances in the applications of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks and molecular clusters

This perspective highlights the recent advances in the structural and practical aspects of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks (Th-MOFs) and molecular clusters. Thorium, as an underexplored actinide, features surprisingly rich coordination geometries and accessibility of the 5f orbital. These features lead to a myriad of topologies and electronic structures, many of which are undocumented for other tetravalent metal-containing MOFs or clusters. Moreover, Th-MOFs inherit the modularity, structural tunability, porosity, and versatile functionality of the state-of-the-art MOFs. Recognizing the radioactive nature of these thorium-bearing materials that may limit their practical uses, Th-MOFs and Th-clusters still have great potential for various applications, including radionuclide sequestration, hydrocarbon storage/separation, radiation detection, photoswitch, CO₂ conversion, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. The objective of this updated perspective is to propose pathways for the renaissance of interest in thorium-based materials.

Identification of a metastable uranium metal–organic framework isomer through non-equilibrium synthesis

Since the structure of supramolecular isomers determines their performance, rational synthesis of a specific isomer hinges on understanding the energetic relationships between isomeric possibilities. To this end, we have systematically interrogated a pair of uranium-based metal–organic framework topological isomers both synthetically and through density functional theory (DFT) energetic calculations. Although synthetic and energetic data initially appeared to mismatch, we assigned this phenomenon to the appearance of a metastable isomer, driven by levers defined by Le Châtelier's principle. Identifying the relationship between structure and energetics in this study reveals how non-equilibrium synthetic conditions can be used as a strategy to target metastable MOFs. Additionally, this study demonstrates how defined MOF design rules may enable access to products within the energetic phase space which are more complex than conventional binary (e.g., kinetic vs. thermodynamic) products.

Structural transformation of metal oxo species within UiO-66 type metal–organic frameworks

A rare example of phase transitions within Th-based MOFs is reported, relevant for nuclear energy and waste management. Further investigations into phase transitions in isostructural frameworks (Zr, Hf, Ce) provide a comparison of different hexanuclear clusters' stabilities.
