Accumulation of weathered p,p'-DDTs in hybridized Cucurbita pepo cultivars

An environmental risk assessment for a DDX-contaminated agricultural area in Turkey: soil vs. plant or human vs. animal

This study is the first research attempt to assess the environmental risks of an agricultural area contaminated with the p,p'-DDT and its metabolites (DDX) on human and terrestrial species through exposure to soil and agricultural products, simultaneously. The study was carried out for a DDX-contaminated agricultural area in Turkey. Soil samples obtained in two different harvest applications were analyzed in terms of DDX levels. Similarly, stem, leaf, and fruit samples of an agricultural product grown on the same soils were analyzed. Using the results of these analyses, DDX intake values were calculated for 5 different human receptor groups, 4 different bird species, and 4 different mammal species, and the risk values were calculated by using a stochastic approach based on a Monte Carlo simulation. Findings indicated a substantial level of carcinogenic risk in the human receptor groups. Furthermore, a significant risk of reproductive toxicity was determined for the birds and mammals. The findings prominently showed that these risks can develop not only through exposure to DDX-contaminated soils but also through the consumption of plants grown on these soils.

How Do Modern Pesticide Treatments Influence the Mobility of Old Incurred DDT Contaminations in Agricultural Soils?

Even more than 50 years after the ban of DDT in Germany, farmers are still affected by its persistence in contaminated soils. Depending on the crop cultivated on such soils, this often leads to low-level residues of DDT and its metabolites DDE and DDD ("DDX"), which are perceived as a risk by the food value chain. Pesticide formulations used in modern agriculture commonly contain high levels of surfactants, but so far no open-field studies have evaluated the effects of these treatments on the mobility of lipophilic contaminants, such as DDX. In this field trial, a 1.03 ha section was cultivated with Cucurbita maxima under realistic conditions to monitor the mobility of DDX in low-level contaminated agricultural soils in dependence of common pesticide applications. A typical organic treatment was compared to a conventional protocol. Soil samples were taken before and after each application. Samples from the organic section featured significantly higher extractable DDX contents in soil and water compared to the conventional section. The results show that modern pesticide treatments can have an unforeseen, yet significant influence on the mobilization and, subsequently, on the plant bioavailability of incurred DDX residues depending on the formulation composition.

Cucurbita spp. and Cucumis sativus enhance the dissipation of polychlorinated biphenyl congeners by stimulating soil microbial community development

A number of Cucurbita species have the potential to extract polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from soil, but their impact on the soil microbial communities responsible for PCB degradation remains unclear. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of three Cucurbita and one Cucumis species on PCB dissipation and soil microbial community structure. Compared to the unplanted control, enhanced losses of PCBs (19.5%-42.7%) were observed in all planted soils. Cucurbita pepo and Cucurbita moschata treatments were more efficient in PCB dissipation, and have similar patterns of soil phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) and PCB congener profiles. Cucurbita treatments tend to have higher soil microbial biomass than Cucumis. Gram-negative (G(-)) bacteria were significantly correlated with PCB degradation rates (R(2) = 0.719, p < 0.001), while fungi and G(-) bacteria were correlated with dissipation of the penta homologue group (R(2) = 0.590, p < 0.01). Therefore, Cucurbita related soil microorganisms could play an important role in remediation of PCB contaminated soils.

Phytotechnologies--preventing exposures, improving public health

Phytotechnologies have potential to reduce the amount or toxicity of deleterious chemicals and agents, and thereby, can reduce human exposures to hazardous substances. As such, phytotechnologies are tools for primary prevention in public health. Recent research demonstrates phytotechnologies can be uniquely tailored for effective exposure prevention in a variety of applications. In addition to exposure prevention, plants can be used as sensors to identify environmental contamination and potential exposures. In this paper, we have presented applications and research developments in a framework to illustrate how phytotechnologies can meet basic public health needs for access to clean water, air, and food. Because communities can often integrate plant-based technologies at minimal cost and with low infrastructure needs, the use of these technologies can be applied broadly to minimize potential contaminant exposure and improve environmental quality. These natural treatment systems also provide valuable ecosystem services to communities and society. In the future, integrating and coordinating phytotechnology activities with public health research will allow technology development focused on prevention of environmental exposures to toxic compounds. Hence, phytotechnologies may provide sustainable solutions to environmental exposure challenges, improving public health and potentially reducing the burden of disease.
