Abstract
A high-salt diet (HSD) can result in numerous health issues, including exacerbation of intestinal inflammation. Therefore, there is an immediate necessity of developing dietary supplements that can mitigate colitis exacerbated by a HSD. This study examined the impact of Lactobacillus plantarum HGD228 on colitis exacerbated by a HSD and the mechanisms underlying its alleviation. HGD228 treatment significantly enhanced colonic goblet cells and MUC2, upregulated ZO-1 and occludin, inhibited epithelial cell apoptosis, and mitigated colitis exacerbated by a HSD. Moreover, HGD228 significantly regulated oxidative stress-related enzymes, including SOD, GSH-PX, and CAT. HGD228 treatment significantly suppressed the NF-κB pathway induced by a HSD and regulated the levels of cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-10, and IL-1β. Furthermore, HGD228 reestablished the gut microbiota altered by HSDDSS, increasing Bifidobacterium while decreasing Escherichia-Shigella and Clostridium sensu stricto 1. HGD228 treatment also enhanced the production of butyric acid and acetic acid, suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines, and strengthened the intestinal mucosal barrier. Therefore, HGD228 enhanced the production of beneficial metabolites by regulating inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress, preserving the mucosal barrier, and enhancing gut microbiota, and mitigated colitis aggravated by a HSD. These results will aid in clinical trials of probiotics and the development of dietary supplements for colitis, with promising application value.

Abstract
Vinegar, frequently distilled by solid fermentation or liquid processes, was generated through the synergistic effect of a microbial community in open or semi-open environments. Based on the studied raw materials, researchers distributed the vinegar into three classes: grain, fruit and animal, with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) playing a pivotal role in their fermentation and contributing significantly to their functional and sensory qualities. Typically, the natural maturation of fresh vinegar necessitates a long period and vast space, engendering a reduced efficiency. To accelerate the vinegar aging process, some physical methods, viz. micro-oxygenation, ozone, ultrasound, microwave, gamma rays, infrared, electric fields and high pressure, have been developed. Produced or enriched by LAB, key bioactive vinegar components are organic acids, phenolic compounds, melanoidins, and tetramethylpyrazine. These active compounds have antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory functions; aid in the regulation of liver protection metabolism and glucose control; and have blood pressure, anti-tumor, anti-fatigue and metabolic regulatory effects. The review explores advancements in vinegar production, including modernized fermentation processes and optimized aging techniques, which enhance these beneficial compounds and ensure product consistency and safety. By examining the LAB variety strains and the bioactive profiles of different vinegar types, this study highlights vinegar's value beyond a culinary product, as a potential therapeutic agent in human nutrition and health. The findings underscore vinegar's relevance not only in dietary and preventive healthcare but also as a potential functional food ingredient. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms of action through which LAB contribute to the development of several new healthy vinegars.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postweaning intestinal damage in piglets is a challenging issue in the livestock industry. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are important metabolic products of the gut microbiota and are widely recognized for their role in maintaining normal colonic function and regulating the intestinal immune system. However, the effects of branched short-chain fatty acid (BSCFA) isobutyrate on intestinal health remain largely unknown. This study aims to explore the potential of isobutyrate for alleviating postweaning intestinal damage. RESULTS This study indicates that isobutyrate can alleviate diarrhea in weaned piglets, enhance their growth performance, and optimize the gut microbiota. This is mainly achieved through increasing the relative abundance of probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Megasphaera, and Prevotellaceae_UCG-003, while concurrently reducing the relative abundance of potentially harmful bacteria such as Clostridium_sensu_stricto-1 and Escherichia-Shigella. It promotes the production of SCFAs, including acetate, isobutyrate, and butyrate. Furthermore, it activates G-protein-coupled receptors (GPR43/109A), inhibits the TLR4/MyD88 signaling pathway, strengthens the intestinal barrier function, and regulates the expression of related cytokines. CONCLUSION In summary, exogenous isobutyrate can be considered a promising feed additive for improving the intestinal microbiota and regulating intestinal health in piglets. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Mounting evidence suggests that the gut-heart axis is critical in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. The gut serves as the primary pathway through which Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infects its host, leading to acute viral myocarditis (AVMC). However, little is known about the role of gut microflora and its metabolites in the development of AVMC. The AVMC model was established by intraperitoneal injection of CVB3 in mice. Then, 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequencing and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) untargeted metabolomics profiling were performed to analyze the microflora composition and metabolic profile of colonic contents. Compared to the Control mice, the AVMC mice displayed a significant reduction in gut microflora richness and diversity, as revealed by an increased abundance of Proteobacteria and a decreased abundance of Cyanobacteria and Desulfobacterota. LEfSe analysis indicated that the main genera differing between the two groups were Escherichia-Shigella, Lactobacillus, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Prevotellaceae_UCG-001, and Odoribacter. Based on the criterion of OPLS-DA VIP ≥ 1.0 and p-value < 0.05, a total of 198 differential metabolites (DMs) were identified in the gut, including 79 upregulated and 119 downregulated metabolites, of which lipids and lipid-like molecules accounted for the largest proportion. Notably, both altered gut bacterial taxa and metabolites were significantly enriched in the Lipid metabolism pathway, with Traumatic acid (TA), Alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) being the key DMs in the pathway. Additionally, significant positive correlations (|r| > 0.80 and p < 0.05) were found between TA levels and Anaerotruncus and Bilophila abundance, between EPA levels and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 abundance, and between DHA levels and Escherichia-Shigella abundance, respectively. CVB3 infection leads to notable alterations in gut microflora composition and its metabolic profile, which may participate in AVMC development. Our findings provide important clues for future in-depth studies on AVMC etiology.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a recurrent chronic colitis disease with increasing incidence and prevalence year by year. The single efficacy and significant side effects of traditional IBD treatment drugs have promoted the flourishing development of new drugs. Inspired by many health benefits of carbon dots (CDs) based nanomedicine in biomedical applications, a metal-free carbon dots (CP-CDs) was synthesized from citric acid and polyethylene polyamine to treat colitis. Oxidative stress tests at the cellular and nematode levels demonstrated CP-CDs have good antioxidant effects, while the toxicity of CP-CDs to cells and nematodes is low. CP-CDs were further applied to dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice models, and it was found that CP-CDs can reduce the disease activity index (DAI) score of colon tissue and restore the intestinal barrier. Further, the anti-colitis mechanisms of CP-CDs were explored, one of which is to regulate intestinal oxidative stress in inflammatory mice, further reducing the expression of inflammatory cytokines, and thus alleviating colitis. Notably, 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Ligilactobacillus and Enterorhabdus) in the intestinal tract increased, while that of harmful bacteria (unclassified_Clostridia_UCG_014) decreased after CP-CDs treatment, indicating that CP-CDs rebalancing the gut microbiota destroyed by DSS is another important mechanism. In short, these non-toxic carbon dots not only have the potential for multi-factor combined relief of colitis but also offer an alternative therapy medicine for patients suffering from IBD.

Abstract
Given the limited efficacy and adverse effects associated with conventional drugs, probiotics are emerging as a promising therapeutic strategy for mitigating the chronic nature of ulcerative colitis (UC) and its consequential secondary liver injury (SLI). Limosilactobacillus fermentum HF06 and Lactiplatibacillus plantarum HF05 are strains we screened with excellent anti-inflammatory and probiotic properties in vitro. In this study, the intervention of HF06 and HF05 in combination (MIXL) was found to be more effective in alleviating intestinal inflammation and secondary liver injury in UC mice compared to supplementing with the two strains individually. Results demonstrated that MIXL effectively attenuated colon shortening and weight loss, downregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 mRNA in the intestines, mitigated SLI, and augmented the enzymatic activities of SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px in the liver. MIXL enhances the intestinal barrier in UC mice, regulates the structure and composition of the gut microbiota, promotes the abundance of Lactobacillus, and suppresses the abundance of bacteria associated with inflammation and liver injury, including Clostridium_Sensu_Stricto_1, Escherichia, Shigella, Enterococcus, Corynebacterium, Desulfovibrio, and norank_f__Oscillospiraceae. This study demonstrated the synergistic effect of HF06 and HF05, providing a reliable foundation for the alleviation of UC.

Abstract
Desulfovibrio (DSV) are sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that are ubiquitously present in the environment and as resident commensal bacteria within the human gastrointestinal tract. Though they are minor residents of the healthy gut, DSV are opportunistic pathobionts that may overgrow in the setting of various intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases. An increasing number of studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between DSV overgrowth (bloom) and various human diseases. While the relationship between DSV bloom and disease pathology has not been clearly established, mounting evidence suggests a causal role for these bacteria in disease development. As DSV are the most predominant genera of SRB in the gut, this review summarizes current knowledge regarding the relationship between DSV and a variety of diseases. Abstract
The previous documentation has shown the role of resistant starch in promoting intestinal health, while the effect of starch-lipid complex (RS5) on colitis remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect and potential mechanism of RS5 in colitis. We prepared RS5 complexes by combining pea starch with lauric acid. Mice with dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis were treated with either RS5 (3.25 g/kg) or normal saline (10 mL/kg) for seven days, and the effects of pea starch-lauric acid complex on mice were observed. The RS5 treatment significantly attenuated weight loss, splenomegaly, colon shortening, and pathological damage in mice with colitis. Compare with the DSS group, cytokines levels, such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in both serum and colon tissue was significantly decreased in RS5 treatment group, while the gene expression of interleukin-10 and the expression of mucin 2, zonula occludens-1, Occludin, and claudin-1 in the colon was significantly upregulated in RS5 treatment group. In addition, RS5 treatment altered the gut microbiota structure of colitis mice by increasing the abundance of Bacteroides and decreasing Turicibacter, Oscillospira, Odoribacter, and Akkermansia. The dietary composition could be exploited to manage colitis by attenuating inflammation, restoring the intestinal barrier, and regulating gut microbiota.

Abstract
Alginate oligosaccharides are degradation products of alginate and have attracted increasing attention due to their versatile biological functions. In the present study, C57BL/6 mice were used to assess the ameliorative effects and mechanisms of guluronate oligosaccharides (GAOS), mannuronic oligosaccharides (MAOS), and heterozygous alginate oligosaccharides (HAOS), which are the three alginate oligosaccharides of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis. The study showed that alginate oligosaccharides alleviated pathological histological damage by slowing down weight loss, inhibiting colonic length shortening, and reducing disease activity index (DAI) and histopathological scores. Alginate oligosaccharides modulated the colonic inflammatory response by reducing colonic MPO levels and downregulating the expression of IL-6 and IL-1β. Alginate oligosaccharides reduced intestinal permeability and reversed intestinal barrier damage by increasing the number of goblet cells, decreasing LPS levels, downregulating Bax protein levels, upregulating Bcl-2 protein levels, and enhancing the expression of the E-cadherin. Furthermore, alginate oligosaccharides modulated the composition of the gut microbiota and restored the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially acetate and butyrate. In conclusion, our study provides a scientific basis for the role of alginate oligosaccharides in relieving ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
Geniposide has been proven to have a therapeutic effect on ulcerative colitis (UC) in animals, but its potential mechanism in UC remains to be clarified. The purpose of this study was to confirm the efficacy of geniposide in UC and to investigate the possible mechanism of geniposide in UC treatment. In vivo, geniposide relieved weight loss and reduced intestinal tissue damage in UC mice. Geniposide decreased the levels of IL-1β and TNF-α and increased IL-10 levels in the colon and serum of UC mice. Geniposide increased FOXP3 expression in the colon and the number of CD4+ FOXP3+ cells in the spleen of UC mice. BD750 abolished the above regulatory effect of GE on UC mice. In vitro, geniposide increased the number of CD4+ FOXP3+ cells in spleen cells from normal mice, decreased the levels of IL-1β, CCL2 and TNF-α in the supernatant of LPS-treated Caco-2 cells, and decreased the protein expression of Beclin-1 and Occludin in cacO-2 cells. Epirubicin inhibited the effect of geniposide on increasing the number of CD4+ FOXP3+ cells in spleen cells, attenuated the inhibitory effect of geniposide on proinflammatory factors and attenuated the upregulation of geniposide on tight junction proteins in LPS-treated Caco-2 cells in the coculture system. In conclusion, geniposide has an effective therapeutic effect on UC. Increasing Treg differentiation of spleen cells is the mechanism by which geniposide alleviates intestinal inflammation and barrier injury in UC.

Abstract
Cereal vinegar sediment (CVS) is a natural precipitate formed during the aging process of traditional grain vinegar. It has been used as Chinese traditional medicine, while its composition and function are reported minimally. In this study, we measured CVS in terms of saccharide, protein, fat and water content, and polyphenol and flavonoid content. Furthermore, we determined the amino acids, organic acids, and other soluble metabolites in CVS using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), HPLC, and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) platforms. The hepatoprotective effect of CVS was evaluated in acute CCl4-induced liver injury mice. Administration of CVS for 7 days prior to the CCl4 treatment can significantly decrease liver alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, compared with those in the hepatic injury model group. The gut microbiota was changed by CCl4 administration and was partly shifted by the pretreatment of CVS, particularly the Muribaculaceae family, which was increased in CVS-treated groups compared with that in the CCl4 administration group. Moreover, the abundances of Alistipes genus and Muribaculaceae family were correlated with the liver ALT, AST, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Our results illustrated the composition of CVS and its hepatoprotective effect in mice, suggested that CVS could be developed as functional food to prevent acute liver injury.
