Abstract
The Making Sense of Brain Tumour programme delivered via videoconferencing (Tele-MAST) demonstrated efficacy for improving mental health and quality of life in people with primary brain tumour (PBT). This study explored the perceived need for and benefits of the Tele-MAST programme, from the perspectives of individuals with PBT and family members. Individuals with PBT completed semi-structured interviews prior to Tele-MAST, after Tele-MAST, and at 3-months follow-up. Twenty-four participants (M age = 46.26, SD = 11.45; 63% high-grade glioma) commenced Tele-MAST (including 6 couples) and 16 completed the programme (67% retention). Reflexive thematic analysis identified PBT as a unique and complex illness with multiple unknowns and emotional impacts. Individuals often felt lost and cast aside in the healthcare system as they searched for understanding and hope regarding the illness. Unmet psychological support needs were typically addressed by experiencing Tele-MAST, a person-centred intervention in which the complexities of PBT were understood from the outset and individuals felt supported to cope with and find meaning in their illness. Providing early and ongoing access with longer-term support options was considered key to improving Tele-MAST. These findings underscore the value of early access to tailored psychological support delivered flexibly according to individuals' ongoing support needs and preferences.

Abstract
PURPOSE Brain tumours are associated with significant disease burden with needs fluctuating throughout the disease trajectory. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the effect of non-pharmacological supportive care interventions on patients with a primary brain tumour by means of patient-reported outcome measures. METHODS The following electronic databases were systematically searched: Academic Search Complete, APA PsycInfo, APA PsycArticles, CINAHL Plus, Cochrane, PubMed, and Web of Science. Additional records were located from Google Scholar, reference tracking, and hand searching. Title, abstract, and full-text screenings were completed by two independent reviewers. Data were extracted using a standardised extraction table. Quality appraisal was conducted using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool. Results were described via narrative synthesis or meta-analyses of standardised scores for randomised controlled trials. RESULTS From 1261 records, nine studies were included. Various interventions were utilised including five exercise-based interventions (aerobics, Pilates, yoga, in-patient rehabilitation and out-patient rehabilitation), two cognitive rehabilitation programs, and two psychosocial interventions. Eight of the nine interventions benefitted patients with statistically significant improvement to at least one aspect of their wellbeing. Meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials for all interventions found standardised mean improvements to the outcomes of quality of life (0.34, p-value = 0.037), psychological wellbeing (0.35, p-value = 0.001), cognitive symptoms (0.41, p-value = 0.016), and fatigue (0.31, p-value <0.001). CONCLUSION Non-pharmacological supportive care interventions showed positive effects in reducing symptom burden among patients with primary brain tumours. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited evidence depicting ways that behavioral theory and techniques have been incorporated into cancer rehabilitation interventions. Examining their use within cancer rehabilitation interventions may provide insight into the active ingredients that can maximize patient engagement and intervention effectiveness. AIM This secondary analysis aimed to describe the use of behavior change theory and behavior change techniques (BCTs) in two previously conducted systematic reviews of cancer rehabilitation interventions. DESIGN Secondary analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) drawn from two systematic reviews examining the effect of cancer rehabilitation interventions on function and disability. SETTING In-person and remotely delivered rehabilitation interventions. POPULATION Adult cancer survivors. METHODS Data extraction included: behavior change theory use, functional outcome data, and BCTs using the Behavior Change Technique Taxonomy (BCTTv1). Based on their effects on function, interventions were categorized as "very", "quite" or "non-promising". To assess the relative effectiveness of coded BCTs, a BCT promise ratio was calculated (the ratio of promising to non-promising interventions that included the BCT). RESULTS Of 180 eligible RCTs, 25 (14%) reported using a behavior change theory. Fifty-four (58%) of the 93 BCTs were used in least one intervention (range 0-29). Interventions reporting theory use utilized more BCTs (median=7) compared to those with no theory (median=3.5; U=2827.00, P=0.001). The number of BCTs did not differ between the very, quite, and non-promising intervention groups (H(2)=0.24, P=0.85). 20 BCTs were considered promising (promise ratio >2) with goal setting, graded tasks, and social support (unspecified) having the highest promise ratios. CONCLUSIONS While there was a wide range of BCTs utilized, they were rarely based on theoretically-proposed pathways and the number of BCTs reported was not related to intervention effectiveness. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT Clinicians should consider basing new interventions upon a relevant behavior change theory. Intentionally incorporating the BCTs of goal setting, graded tasks, and social support may improve intervention efficacy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patient reported outcomes (PROs) in the context of Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery (GKSRS) for benign brain tumor have been under-researched. This study examined changes in PROs and adjustment trajectories post-GKSRS. METHOD 50 adults (54% female) aged on average 53.18 (SD = 14.76) years with benign brain tumor were assessed 1 week before GKSRS, 1-2 weeks post-GKSRS, and at 3-month follow-up. Telephone-based questionnaires of anxiety and depressive symptoms, cognitive function, symptom burden, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were completed. RESULTS Significant improvements in HRQoL, perceived cognitive ability, anxiety, and total brain tumor symptoms were evident between pre-GKSRS and 3-month follow-up. Conversely, there was a significant short-term increase in depressive symptoms at post-GKSRS; however, levels did not differ from pre-GKSRS at follow-up. No significant changes were evident on PROs of headaches or fatigue. About half of the participants (46-51%) experienced reliable improvement in global HRQoL, and one-third (31-34%) reported improved anxiety symptoms. Increased depressive symptoms was seen in 34% of participants post-GKSRS and 18% at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS At 3 months post-GKSRS, improvements in HRQoL, anxiety, perceived cognitive ability, and total brain tumor symptoms were evident. Routine monitoring and support for pre-GKSRS anxiety and depressive symptoms post-GKSRS is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Family caregivers of people with high-grade glioma often report high rates of psychological distress, which has been attributed to the unique aspects of the disease and onerous care demands. Clinical practice guidelines advocate for caregiver support from diagnosis through to end-of-life and bereavement. Yet, research has identified that caregivers' support needs are often overlooked. AIM To explore caregivers' experiences of psychological support and perceptions of what constitutes optimal psychological support for caregivers in the context of high-grade glioma. DESIGN Qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with data analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS Eighteen current (n = 11) and bereaved (n = 7) family caregivers (73% female, aged 33-69 years) of adults with high-grade glioma participated. Interviews explored caregivers' perceptions of psychological support. RESULTS Two major themes were generated. The first theme, 'It was never about me', reflected caregivers prioritise for people with high-grade glioma to be well supported despite experiencing their own unmet psychological support needs. The second theme, 'Continuous, coordinated and personalised support', highlighted the importance of timely and tailored interventions addressing caregivers' practical, educational and emotional support needs throughout the illness journey. CONCLUSIONS Caregivers commonly prioritise the support needs of people with high-grade gliomas; yet, have their own distinct needs that vary throughout the illness. Primary care providers have a potential role in facilitating timely access to palliative care, practical support and brain tumour-specific psychological support to meet caregivers' diverse needs across the care continuum in the context of high-grade glioma.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine interrater reliability and construct validity of the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) semi-structured interview for assessing depression in adults with a primary brain tumour. Fifty adults with a primary brain tumour (mean age = 45.86, SD = 12.48) reporting at least mild distress (Distress Thermometer [DT] ≥ 4) were recruited from a multidisciplinary brain tumour clinic and administered a telephone-based cognitive screener, MADRS, Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) depression subscale and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Audiotaped interviews were transcribed and then scored by two independent raters. Interrater reliability for the MADRS total score was excellent (ICC = 0.98) and ranged from good to excellent (ICC = 0.83-0.96) for MADRS items. The MADRS total score was significantly associated with the DT, DASS depression, and GAD-7 (r = 0.50-0.76, p < 0.001), thus providing evidence of construct validity. Individuals with poorer cognitive function reported higher levels of depression. The findings provide psychometric support for the MADRS as a semi-structured interview for assessing depression after brain tumour. Further research investigating the sensitivity and specificity of the MADRS is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Treatment-related outcomes after Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery (GKSRS) for benign brain tumour are well-established; yet patient reported outcomes have been largely overlooked. This study explored individuals' perspectives of their health and well-being prior to and following GKSRS. METHOD Twenty adults (65% female) aged 24-71 years with benign brain tumour were recruited from a major metropolitan hospital and assessed approximately one week prior to, two weeks after, and at three months following GKSRS. They completed telephone-based interviews focusing on general health, symptoms, and well-being. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Three major themes characterized individuals' perceptions of their health and well-being. "Understanding my Illness and Treatment" reflected individuals' efforts to make sense of their illness and symptoms to reduce ambiguity and increase sense of control. "Experiencing Gamma Knife" related to expectations of the procedure, outcomes, daily impacts, and emotional reactions. "Adjusting one's Mindset and Coping" characterised how peoples' approaches to coping with their illness were altered over time. CONCLUSIONS Coping and adjustment is highly individualistic in the context of GKSRS. Over time, most individuals were able to make sense of their illness, adjust their mindset and utilize behavioural strategies and support systems to cope with the long-term effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To ensure equitable and effective rehabilitation for neuro-oncological patients the development of an effective treatment strategy is necessary. OBJECTIVE To identify evidence for interventions used in acute rehabilitation for patients with neuro-oncological conditions and to systematize them according to the International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI) classification Methods: A scoping review was conducted, comprising 3 parts: identification of interventions in publications; linking the interventions to ICHI classification; and identifying problems targeted by these interventions and linking them to International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) categories. RESULTS The search strategy selected a total of 6,128 articles. Of these, 58 publications were included in the review. A total of 150 interventions were identified, 47 of which were unique interventions. Forty-three of the interventions were linked to the ICHI classification; 4 of these interventions were evidence level I, 18 evidence level II, 23 evidence level III, and 2 evidence level IV. Five interventions were linked to the ICF One-Level Classification, and the remaining 42 interventions were linked to the ICF Two-Level Classification. All interventions regarding the Body Systems and Functions were linked to the ICF Two-Level Classification. Only 5 interventions in the Activities and Participation domain, 3 interventions in the Health-related Behaviors domain, and 1 intervention in the Environment domain were linked to the ICF Two-Level Classification. Two identified problems (inpatient nursing and comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation) were not classified according to the ICF. DISCUSSION A total of 47 unique interventions were identified, revealing a significant focus on addressing issues related to bodily functions and structures. The study also highlighted the challenge of linking specific interventions to ICHI codes, particularly when the source documentation lacked adequate detail. While this review offers valuable insights into rehabilitation for neuro-oncological patients and lays the groundwork for standardized coding and data exchange, it also emphasizes the need for further refinement and validation of the ICHI classification to better align with the multifaceted interventions used in rehabilitation. CONCLUSION There is evidence in the literature of 47 interventions used by various rehabilitation professionals in the acute rehabilitation of neuro-oncological patients. However, most of these interventions are evidence level II and III. Four interventions (virtual reality, mirror therapy, robotic upper extremity training to improve function, and cognitive group therapy) are not included in the ICHI. The problems analysed in the literature that are targeted by interventions often do not coincide with the purpose of the specific intervention or are too broadly defined and not specific. These findings emphasize the need for greater precision in describing and documenting interventions, as well as the importance of aligning interventions more closely with ICF categories, particularly in the domains of Activities and Participation. This work highlights the heterogeneity in the reporting of rehabilitation interventions, and the challenges in mapping them to standardized classifications, emphasizing the ongoing need for refining and updating these classification systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To undertake an economic evaluation of a telehealth psychological support intervention for patients with primary brain tumor (PBT). METHODS A within-trial cost-utility analysis over 6 months was performed comparing a tailored telehealth-psychological support intervention with standard care (SC) in a randomized control trial. Data were sourced from the Telehealth Making Sense of Brain Tumor (Tele-MAST) trial survey data, project records, and administrative healthcare claims. Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were calculated based on the EuroQol-5D-5L. Non-parametric bootstrapping with 2000 iterations was used to determine sampling uncertainty. Multiple imputation was used for handling missing data. RESULTS The Tele-MAST trial included 82 participants and was conducted in Queensland, Australia during 2018-2021. When all healthcare claims were included, the incremental cost savings from Tele-MAST were -AU$4,327 (95% CI: -$8637, -$18) while incremental QALY gains were small at 0.03 (95% CI: -0.02, 0.08). The likelihood of Tele-MAST being cost-effective versus SC was 87% at a willingness-to-pay threshold of AU$50,000 per QALY gain. When psychological-related healthcare costs were included only, the incremental cost per QALY gain was AU$10,685 (95% CI: dominant, $24,566) and net monetary benefits were AU$534 (95% CI: $466, $602) with a 65% likelihood of the intervention being cost-effective. CONCLUSIONS Based on this small randomized controlled trial, the Tele-MAST intervention is a cost-effective intervention for improving the quality of life of people with PBT in Australia. Patients receiving the intervention incurred significantly lower overall healthcare costs than patients in SC. There was no significant difference in costs incurred for psychological health services.

Abstract
Background The objective of this scoping review was to describe the intervention characteristics and effectiveness of psychosocial interventions aimed at managing personality and behavior changes in people with brain tumors. A secondary objective was to explore if these interventions had an impact on outcomes for carers. Personality and behavior changes considered included aggression, apathy, paranoia, disinhibition, and emotional lability. Methods This review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews. Searches were conducted in PsycINFO, CINAHL, Medline (Ovid), and Scopus. We synthesized studies published from 1996 to 2022 that evaluated interventions to manage brain tumor related personality and behavioral changes in adults. A data extraction tool were used based on the Joanna Briggs Institute template. Results are presented in a summary table and a narrative synthesis was conducted. Results Three thousand and five hundred and ninety-four records were screened. Title and abstract screening resulted in 29 potentially eligible studies. Full screening excluded 24 articles and 5 interventions met the inclusion criteria. The interventions were diverse in duration, delivery modality, setting, and participation (eg, the patient individually or patient and carer). The interventions reported improvements in the targeted personality and behavior change symptoms for patients with primary brain tumors. Four studies included a measure of personality and behavior change symptoms and two studies included a measure of outcomes for carers and reported improvements in carer knowledge and a reduction in carer distress. All studies sampled fewer than 100 participants. Studies had limited follow-up data and different tools were used to assess the presence and nature of personality and behavior changes. Conclusions There is a dearth of psychosocial interventions to support patients and their carers to manage brain tumor related personality and behavior changes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This pragmatic randomized control trial aimed to evaluate clinical efficacy of the Making Sense of Brain Tumour program delivered via videoconferencing (Tele-MAST) for improving mental health and quality of life (QoL) relative to standard care in individuals with primary brain tumor (PBT). METHOD Adults with PBT experiencing at least mild distress (Distress Thermometer ≥4) and caregivers were randomly allocated to the 10-session Tele-MAST program or standard care. Mental health and QoL were assessed pre-intervention, post-intervention (primary endpoint), and 6-weeks and 6-months follow-up. The primary outcome was clinician-rated depressive symptoms on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale. RESULTS 82 participants with PBT (34% benign, 20% lower-grade glioma, 46% high-grade glioma) and 36 caregivers were recruited (2018-2021). Controlling for baseline functioning, Tele-MAST participants with PBT had lower depressive symptoms at post-intervention (95% CI: 10.2-14.6, vs. 15.2-19.6, p = 0.002) and 6-weeks post-intervention (95% CI: 11.5-15.8 vs. 15.6-19.9, p = 0.010) than standard care, and were almost 4 times more likely to experience clinically reduced depression (OR, 3.89; 95% CI: 1.5-9.9). Tele-MAST participants with PBT also reported significantly better global QoL, emotional QoL and lower anxiety at post-intervention and 6-weeks post-intervention than standard care. There were no significant intervention effects for caregivers. At 6-months follow-up participants with PBT who received Tele-MAST reported significantly better mental health and QoL relative to pre-intervention. CONCLUSIONS Tele-MAST was found to be more effective for reducing depressive symptoms at post-intervention than standard care for people with PBT but not caregivers. Tailored and extended psychological support may be beneficial for people with PBT.

Abstract
AbstractGlioma patients carry the burden of having both a progressive neurological disease and cancer, and may face a variety of symptoms, including depression and anxiety. These symptoms are highly prevalent in glioma patients (median point prevalence ranging from 16-41% for depression and 24-48% for anxiety when assessed by self-report questionnaires) and have a major impact on health-related quality of life and even overall survival time. A worse overall survival time for glioma patients with depressive symptoms might be due to tumor progression and/or its supportive treatment causing depressive symptoms, an increased risk of suicide or other (unknown) factors. Much is still unclear about the etiology of depressive and anxiety symptoms in glioma. These psychiatric symptoms often find their cause in a combination of neurophysiological and psychological factors, such as the tumor and/or its treatment. Although these patients have a particular idiosyncrasy, standard treatment guidelines for depressive and anxiety disorders apply, generally recommending psychological and pharmacological treatment. Only a few nonpharmacological trials have been conducted evaluating the efficacy of psychological treatments (eg, a reminiscence therapy-based care program) in this population, which significantly reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms. No pharmacological trials have been conducted in glioma patients specifically. More well-designed trials evaluating the efficacy of nonpharmacological treatments for depressive and anxiety disorders in glioma are urgently needed to successfully treat psychiatric symptoms in brain tumor patients and to improve (health-related) quality of life.

Abstract
A cancer diagnosis is life altering and frequently associated with both acute and long-lasting psychosocial and behavioral distress for patients. The impact of a diffuse glioma diagnosis on mental health is an important aspect of the patient experience with their disease. This needs to be understood by neurosurgeons so these concerns can be appropriately addressed in a timely fashion and integrated into the multidisciplinary care of neuro-oncology patients. The relatively grave prognosis associated with diffuse gliomas, the morbidity associated with treatment, and the constant threat of developing a new neurological deficit all can negatively affect a patient's mental ability to cope and ultimately manifest in mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. The objective of this systematic review was to describe the variety of behavioral health disorders patients may experience following a glioma diagnosis and discuss possible treatment options. The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and PsycINFO databases were searched through July 1, 2022, using broad search terms, which resulted in 5028 studies that were uploaded to Covidence systematic review software. Duplicates, non-English-language studies, and studies with irrelevant outcomes or incorrect design were removed (n = 3167). A total of 92 articles reporting behavioral health outcomes in brain tumor patients were categorized and extracted for associations with overall mental health, anxiety, depression, distress, stress, pharmacology, interventions, and mental health in caregivers. The authors identified numerous studies reporting the prevalence of mental health disorders and their negative influence in this population. However, there is a paucity of literature on therapeutic options for patients. Given the strong correlation between patient quality of life and mental well-being, there is a considerable need for early recognition and treatment of these behavioral health disorders to optimize everyday functioning for patients.

Abstract
AIM To review the literature related to symptom management, clinical significance and related theoretical framework systems in adult patients with brain tumours. BACKGROUND As understanding of symptoms or symptom clusters and underlying biologic mechanisms has grown, it is apparent that symptom science is moving forward. Although some progress has been made in the symptom science of solid tumours such as breast and lung neoplasms, insufficient attention has been paid to symptom management for patients suffering from brain tumours. Further research is needed to achieve effective symptom management for these patients. DESIGN A literature review with a systematic search of symptom management in adult brain tumours. METHODS Electronic data bases were searched to obtain relevant published literature on symptom management in adults with brain tumours. This was then analysed and a synthesis of relevant findings is presented. FINDINGS Four significant general themes relating to symptom management of brain tumours in adults were identified: (1) The potential theoretical foundation related to symptom management was revealed. (2) Widely accepted validated scales or questionnaires for the assessment of single symptoms or symptom clusters were recommended. (3) Several symptom clusters and the underlying biologic mechanisms have been reported. (4) Specific symptom interventions for adults with brain tumours were collected and classified as evidence-based or insufficient evidence. CONCLUSION There are still many challenges in the effective management of symptoms in adults with brain tumours. The guiding role of theoretical frameworks or models related to symptom management should be utilized in future research. Using the concept of symptom clustering for research into symptoms found in patients with brain tumours, exploring common biological mechanisms for specific symptom clusters and making full use of modern big data resources to build a strong evidence base for an effective intervention or management program may inform the management of symptoms among these patients leading to better results. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This is a literature review. IMPLICATIONS FOR SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT The ultimate goal is obviously not only improving the survival rate of patients with brain tumours, but also enhancing their quality of life. Several important findings from our review include the theoretical foundations, validated assessment tools, the assessment of symptom clusters and the underlying biologic mechanism, and the identification of the evidence base for symptom interventions. These are of relevance for managers, researchers and practitioners and may function as a reference to help the effective symptom management for adults with brain tumours.

Abstract
Background To achieve patient-centric quality care in neuro-oncology, all aspects of the disease and its impact on quality survival need to be considered. This includes the psychological consequences of a brain tumor diagnosis and subsequent life-altering experiences. Far too often the voice of our patients is unheard. Empowering patients to advocate for their own psychological needs is essential. Methods Data were derived from four focus groups with adult patients with brain tumors (N = 15; M age = 46 years, 53% female). A trained moderator led each 90-min group and posed semi-structured questions regarding patients' care needs throughout their neuro-oncological disease trajectory. Emphasis was placed on the quality of life and distress reduction. Common themes were identified via thematic content analysis using NVivo software. A high inter-rater reliability (M kappa = 0.92, range = 0.85-0.93) was achieved. Two themes are presented here: Emotional Response to Stressors and Existential Considerations. Results Of the two themes presented, 14 codes emerged. Codes were classified into three broad categories: Fear, Despair, and Resilience. The frequency of each category ranged from 31.4% to 34.7%. Example quotes and a discussion of each category follows. Conclusions It is imperative that we include the patient perspective in the development of neuro-oncology programs, thereby considering the quality of survival in addition to quantity. Neuro-oncology quality care must be driven by our patients' experiences and should integrate support for emotional distress while promoting resilience throughout this life-threatening illness.

Frequency and burden of potentially treatable symptoms in glioma patients with stable disease. Heliyon 2023; 9:e13278. Abstract
Background & aims Glioma patients experience a multitude of symptoms that negatively affect their health-related quality of life. Symptoms vary greatly across disease phases, and the patients' stable phase might be particularly suitable for assessing and treating symptoms. Identifying symptoms and patients' needs is a first step toward improving patient care. In glioma patients with stable disease, we assessed the frequency and burden of patient-reported symptoms, examined how these symptoms co-occur, and also determined whether patients would consider treatment to ameliorate specific symptoms. Methods In this retrospective study, patients rated the frequency and burden of seventeen symptoms on a seven-point Likert scale and stated whether they would consider treatment for these symptoms. Correlations between frequency, burden, and considering treatment were evaluated with Kendall's Tau correlation coefficients. Based on partial correlations between symptom frequencies we visualized the symptoms as a network. Results Fifty-two glioma patients with stable disease were included (31 WHO grade II/III, 21 WHO grade IV). The top five symptoms were fatigue, memory problems, reduced physical fitness, concentration problems, and drowsiness. Fatigue had the highest median frequency (4.5, interquartile range 2.5). Over half of the patients experienced three or more symptoms simultaneously and associations between all symptoms were depicted as a network. Overall, 35% of patients would consider treatment for at least one symptom. The wish to undergo symptom treatment correlated only moderately with symptom frequency and burden (range of correlations 0.24-0.57 and 0.28-0.61, respectively). Conclusion Glioma patients with stable disease experience multiple symptoms with a consequently high symptom burden. Despite the high prevalence of symptoms, the inclination for symptom management interventions was relatively low. The most frequent and burdensome symptoms and the way they are interrelated could serve as a roadmap for future research on symptom management in these patients.

Abstract
The aim of this project was to determine research priorities, barriers, and enablers for adult primary brain tumour research in Australia and New Zealand. Consumers, health professionals, and researchers were invited to participate in a two-phase modified Delphi study. Phase 1 comprised an initial online survey (n = 91) and then focus groups (n = 29) which identified 60 key research topics, 26 barriers, and 32 enablers. Phase 2 comprised two online surveys to (1) reduce the list to 37 research priorities which achieved consensus (>75% 2-point agreement) and had high mean importance ratings (n = 116 participants) and (2) determine the most important priorities, barriers, and enablers (n = 90 participants). The top ten ranked research priorities for the overall sample and sub-groups (consumers, health professionals, and researchers) were identified. Priorities focused on: tumour biology, pre-clinical research, clinical and translational research, and supportive care. Variations were seen between sub-groups. The top ten barriers to conducting brain tumour research related to funding and resources, accessibility and awareness of research, collaboration, and process. The top ten research enablers were funding and resources, collaboration, and workforce. The broad list of research priorities identified by this Delphi study, together with how consumers, health professionals, and researchers prioritised items differently, and provides an evidence-based research agenda for brain tumour research that is needed across a wide range of areas.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to describe patient self-reported distress over time and how this was associated with wellbeing, and supportive care needs over a 6-month period from commencing chemoradiotherapy for high grade glioma (HGG). METHODS In this prospective cohort study, participants completed surveys at three time points: before chemoradiotherapy, at 3 and 6 months. These included Distress Thermometer, Functional Assessment of Cancer/Brain Cancer Treatment-general (Fact-G/FACT-BR), Supportive Care Needs Scale (SF-34) and Brain Tumour Specific subscale. Patient survival time was also collected. Group-based trajectory modelling was performed. Multinominal logistic regression assessed variables associated with different distress trajectory groups. RESULTS One hundred and sixteen participants completed assessments at baseline, 89 participants at 3 and 64 at 6 months. Four distress trajectory groups were identified; consistent low distress (18%), low to high distress (38%), high-to low distress (24%) and consistent high distress (19%). Younger participants tended to report decreased distress over time, whereas older participants reported consistently high distress. High distress trajectory participants had less education, lower physical wellbeing, more unmet needs, but higher functional wellbeing compared to the low to high distress trajectory. The number of unmet needs paralleled the patterns of distress over time. The highest unmet needs in people with HGG and high distress were disease specific changes in mental ability and physical side effects. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates people with HGG experience ongoing distress and highlights a need for continuous distress and unmet needs screening and referrals.

Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety in Adults with High-Grade Glioma: A Literature Review and Findings in a Group of Patients before Chemoradiotherapy and One Year Later. Abstract
Simple Summary High-grade glioma (HGG) is the most severe type of brain cancer. At different stages of the disease, affected persons are at high risk of symptoms of depression and anxiety. If undiagnosed and untreated, these symptoms might become severe and compromise the patient’s quality of life. Improved knowledge on the prevalence, mechanisms and clinical risk factors underlying the etiology of depression and anxiety in this population is required. This may help to increase awareness on the importance of integrating consistent assessment of mood symptoms with the clinical follow-up and provide insights for developing personalized psychosocial interventions. Abstract High-grade glioma (HGG) is associated with several external and internal stressors that may induce mood alterations at all stages of the disease. Symptoms of depression and anxiety in persons with glioma have multifactorial etiology and require active follow-up. We reviewed the literature data on the prevalence, mechanisms likely involved in the etiology of mood alterations in persons with HGG and psychosocial interventions found beneficial in treating these symptoms. We also investigated the prevalence and clinical variables that could increase the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms in a group of patients with HGG at two disease time-points: after surgery, before and 1 year after chemoradiotherapy. Literature findings revealed complex mechanisms underlying these symptoms and highlighted the importance of providing early access to palliative care. Our results show a high rate of anxiety and depression symptoms in the first stage of the disease and increased concomitance of these symptoms at the 1-year follow-up. Depression and anxiety symptoms at 1 year after the end of chemoradiotherapy were associated with the presence of symptoms at the first stage of the disease and tumor progression. Antiepileptic drugs and corticosteroid intake did not increase the risk of depressive and anxious symptoms among patients. Active management of mood alterations is an essential part of the care and contributes to patients’ well-being and quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Comprehensive review of existing types and effectiveness of community-based interventions delivered to adults (mean age 18-65 years) with long-lasting (≥6 months) difficulties following acquired brain injury (ABI). DESIGN Systematic review of controlled intervention studies published until February 2021. MAIN MEASURES Systematic searches in databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects [Cochrane Library], and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials [Cochrane Library]) and inclusion of English peer-reviewed full-text articles; randomized or controlled community-based intervention studies; sample size of 20 or more participants; and 3 or more intervention sessions. Two reviewers independently extracted data for the synthesis and assessed the methodological quality. Data extraction included study characteristics, demographics of participants, content and dose of intervention, outcome measures, and findings. RESULT The search returned 7386 publications, of which 49 eligible studies were included, revealing a diverse range of community-based interventions and a myriad of outcome measures applied for assessing functional capacities, participation, and quality of life in the chronic phase of ABI. Intervention types encompassed 14 holistic, 23 physical, and 12 specific interventions. A large heterogeneity regarding intervention frequency and intensity was found. Meta-analyses performed on the holistic, physical, and specific interventions did not indicate any significant pooled effects but showed highly variable effects between individuals, both in persons with traumatic and nontraumatic brain injuries. CONCLUSIONS Because of lack of pooled effects within types of community-based interventions, specific evidence-based recommendations within holistic, physical, and specific interventions designed to mitigate long-lasting ABI problems cannot be made. This review highlights the need for future studies to address methodological issues concerning larger sample size, lack of clear description interventions and comparator, missing reports of effects in change scores, need for consistent use of recommended outcome measures, and investigating the wide variety in intervention responsiveness among participants with ABI. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review the evidence regarding rehabilitation interventions targeting optimal physical or cognitive function in adults with a history of cancer and describe the breadth of evidence as well as strengths and limitations across a range of functional domains. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Plus, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. The time scope was January 2008 to April 2019. STUDY SELECTION Prospective, controlled trials including single- and multiarm cohorts investigating rehabilitative interventions for cancer survivors at any point in the continuum of care were included, if studies included a primary functional outcome measure. Secondary data analyses and pilot/feasibility studies were excluded. Full-text review identified 362 studies for inclusion. DATA EXTRACTION Extraction was performed by coauthor teams and quality and bias assessed using the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Classification of Evidence Scheme (class I-IV). DATA SYNTHESIS Studies for which the functional primary endpoint achieved significance were categorized into 9 functional areas foundational to cancer rehabilitation: (1) quality of life (109 studies), (2) activities of daily living (61 studies), (3) fatigue (59 studies), (4) functional mobility (55 studies), (5) exercise behavior (37 studies), (6) cognition (20 studies), (7) communication (10 studies), (8) sexual function (6 studies), and (9) return to work (5 studies). Most studies were categorized as class III in quality/bias. Averaging results found within each of the functional domains, 71% of studies reported statistically significant results after cancer rehabilitation intervention(s) for at least 1 functional outcome. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide evidence supporting the efficacy of rehabilitative interventions for individuals with a cancer history. The findings should be balanced with the understanding that many studies had moderate risk of bias and/or limitations in study quality by AAN criteria. These results may provide a foundation for future work to establish clinical practice guidelines for rehabilitative interventions across cancer disease types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Managing Cancer and Living Meaningfully (CALM) is an evidence-based, brief, semi-structured psychotherapy designed to help patients with advanced cancer cope with the practical and profound challenges of their illness. However, no study to date has investigated its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness in adults with malignant glioma, despite the well-documented incidence of psychological distress in this vulnerable and underserved population. METHODS Fourteen patients with glioma and elevated symptoms of depression and/or death anxiety enrolled in the trial: 83% glioblastoma, 75% female, Mage = 56 years (SD = 15.1; range = 27-81). Feasibility was assessed based on established metrics. Acceptability was measured by post-session surveys and post-intervention interviews. Preliminary intervention effects were explored using paired t-tests, comparing psychological distress at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS Of the 14 enrolled patients, 12 were evaluable. Nine completed the study (75% retention rate). Three patients withdrew due to substantial disease progression which affected their ability to participate. Participants reported high perceived benefit, and all recommended the program to others. Baseline to post-intervention assessments indicated reductions in death anxiety, generalized anxiety, and depression, and increases in spirituality. Quality of life and fear of cancer recurrence remained stable throughout the study period. CONCLUSIONS CALM appears feasible for use with adults with malignant glioma. Enrollment and retention rates were high and comparable to psychotherapy trials for patients with advanced cancer. High perceived benefit and reductions in symptoms of death anxiety, generalized anxiety, and depression were reported by participants. These findings are extremely encouraging and support further study of CALM in neuro-oncology. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT04646213 registered on 11/27/2020.

The burden of a brain tumor: guiding patient centric care in neuro-oncology. J Neurooncol 2022; 157:487-498. Abstract
PURPOSE Brain tumor patients report an overwhelming sense of uncertainty when navigating the course of their terminal disease. Historically, organizational experts and/or treating physicians have established neuro-oncology programs. However, given the disease burden and incurable nature of current medical treatments, patient-centric care should be prioritized alongside institutional and academic objectives. Integrating patient perspectives into interdisciplinary programmatic development can improve comprehensive care and empower patients to advocate for their own quality healthcare needs. METHODS Data was derived from four focus groups with adult brain tumor patients (N = 15; Mage = 46 years, 53% female). A trained moderator led each 90-min group and posed semi-structured questions regarding patients' care needs throughout their neuro-oncological disease trajectory. Emphasis was placed on quality of life and psychological distress reduction for both patients and their loved ones. Common themes were identified via thematic content analysis using NVivo software. A high inter-rater reliability (Mkappa = 0.92, range= 0.85-0.93) was achieved. RESULTS Six distinct themes emerged, where the frequency of each theme ranged from 12.5 to 23.3%. Specifically, patients discussed relational concerns, navigation of interdisciplinary care, neurobehavioral impacts, emotional responses to stressors, existential concerns, and caregiver support. A discussion of themes follows. CONCLUSIONS It is imperative that we include the patient perspective in the development of neuro-oncology programs; considering the quality of survival in addition to quantity. Neuro-oncology quality care themes identified were relational concerns, navigating interdisciplinary care, neurobehavioral impact, emotional response to stressors, existential concerns, and caregiver support. A paramount concentration for comprehensive neuro-oncology programs must include patients' quality needs.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to scope the psychological support practices of Australian health professionals providing supportive care to adults with primary brain tumor. Method Health professionals from multidisciplinary organizations and cancer support services completed an online survey focused on psychological support for people with brain tumor (PwBT) and family members, and perceived barriers or gaps in support provision. Results 107 professionals, mainly from psychology (45%), nursing (20%), and social work (10%) backgrounds, completed the survey. Scope of practice differed according to discipline, with psychologists and nurses most likely to screen for psychological distress (71%–76%), and psychologists more typically providing at least one psychological support session (78%). Psychologists were more likely to screen for cognitive impairment (31%), whereas nurses and social workers more commonly provided family‐based support (62%–73%). Psychological support was more frequently provided in the long‐term management phase (78%) than early post‐diagnosis/treatment (45%). System‐level barriers to accessing psychological support were most frequently identified, which included limited resources and funding, insufficient staff time, lengthy waitlists and costs, poor service coordination, and lack of staff with brain tumor‐specific training. Conclusions The provision of psychological support for PwBT varies according to discipline, setting and management phase. Further research on different models of psychosocial care is needed to inform strategies to address organizational and policy factors impacting professionals' scope of practice.

Abstract
Simple Summary Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) comprise 13–16% of glial tumors. As survival for LGG patients has been improving, it is important to consider the effects of diagnosis and treatment on mental health. The aims of this retrospective cohort study were to determine the incidence, prevalence, and risk factors of mental health disorders (MHD) in LGG patients. In our analysis including 20,432 LGG patients, we identified an MHD prevalence of 60.9%. Of those with no history of prior MHD, 16.9% of LGG patients developed a new onset of MHD within 12 months of LGG diagnosis. Risk factors included female gender, ages 35–54, presence of seizures, and first-line surgical treatment. Therefore, proactive surveillance and counseling surrounding MHDs are recommended among LGG patients. Impact of surgery on brain networks affecting mood should also be considered. Abstract Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) comprise 13–16% of glial tumors. As survival for LGG patients has been gradually improving, it is essential that the effects of diagnosis and disease progression on mental health be considered. This retrospective cohort study queried the IBM Watson Health MarketScan® Database to describe the incidence and prevalence of mental health disorders (MHDs) among LGG patients and identify associated risk factors. Among the 20,432 LGG patients identified, 12,436 (60.9%) had at least one MHD. Of those who never had a prior MHD, as documented in the claims record, 1915 (16.7%) had their first, newly diagnosed MHD within 12 months after LGG diagnosis. Patients who were female (odds ratio (OR), 1.14, 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.03–1.26), aged 35–44 (OR, 1.20, 95% CI, 1.03–1.39), and experienced glioma-related seizures (OR, 2.19, 95% CI, 1.95–2.47) were significantly associated with MHD incidence. Patients who underwent resection (OR, 2.58, 95% CI, 2.19–3.04) or biopsy (OR, 2.17, 95% CI, 1.68–2.79) were also more likely to develop a MHD compared to patients who did not undergo a first-line surgical treatment. These data support the need for active surveillance, proactive counseling, and management of MHDs in patients with LGG. Impact of surgery on brain networks affecting mood should also be considered.

Abstract
Simple Summary After years of gauging the efficacy of tumor-directed therapies primarily by means of survival, a broader perspective on therapeutic outcome also focusses on patients’ everyday functional abilities. Besides neurocognition, a matter of high clinical relevance, “social cognition” may also affect well-being and quality of life (QoL) in brain tumor patients. Abilities that enable individuals to establish and maintain social relationships are summarized under the umbrella term “sociocognitive functioning”. These abilities encompass the understanding and sharing of emotional and mental states of other individuals as well as skills to detect and resolve interpersonal problems. These sociocognitive abilities may be challenged in highly demanding life situations such as brain tumor diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, we summarize the literature on psychosocial burden and sociocognitive functioning in adult brain tumor patients. Abstract Brain tumors may represent devastating diseases and neuro-oncological research in the past solely focused on development of better treatments to achieve disease control. The efficacy of tumor-directed treatment was evaluated by progression-free and overall survival. However, as neuro-oncological treatment became more effective, preservation and improvement of quality of life (QoL) was noticed to represent an important additional outcome measure. The need to balance between aggressive tumor-directed treatment and preservation of QoL was increasingly acknowledged in brain tumor patients. QoL is comprised by many determinants; one of those may have been rather neglected so far: social cognition. Since diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors represent demanding life situations, patients may experience increased psychosocial burden and the negative consequences of illness on well-being may be buffered by intact social relationships. These skills to build and maintain supportive social relationships essentially depend on the ability to empathize with others and to recognize and appropriately address social conflicts, i.e., “sociocognitive functioning”. Therefore, sociocognitive functions may influence QoL and treatment outcome. In this article, we review the literature on psychosocial burden and sociocognitive functioning in adult brain tumor patients.

Abstract
Background Screening glioma patients regularly for possible mood disorders may facilitate early identification and referral of patients at risk. This study evaluated if the EORTC QLQ‐C30 Emotional Functioning (EF) scale could be used as an initial screening measure to identify patients possibly having a mood disorder. Methods EORTC QLQ‐C30 EF and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores were collected as part of a study assessing the impact of timing of patient‐reported outcome assessments on actual health‐related quality of life outcomes (N = 99). Spearman correlations and Mann‐Whitney U tests were used to determine the association between the EF and HADS (sub)scales. Receiver Operating Characteristic analyses were performed to determine optimal cut‐off EF scores to identify patients possibly having a mood disorder (i.e. HADS subscale score ≥8 points). Results EF and HADS (sub)scales correlated moderately (HADS‐A: r = −0.65; HADS‐D: r = −0.52). Significant EF score differences were found between patients with HADS ≥8 versus <8 points (HADS‐A: mean difference (MD) = 32 and HADS‐D: MD = 23). The EF scale had excellent (HADS‐A; AUC = 0.88) and borderline excellent (HADS‐D; AUC = 0.78) distinguishing capabilities. A statistically optimal (EF score <80) and a most inclusive (sensitivity of 100%, corresponding to an EF score <97) EF cut‐off score correctly identified 88.0% and 96.0% of patients with a possible mood disorder, respectively. Conclusion EORTC QLQ‐C30 EF scale seems to be an appropriate screening measure to identify glioma patients possibly having a mood disorder in need of further assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary malignant brain tumours can have an unpredictable course, but high-grade gliomas typically have a relentlessly progressive disease trajectory. They can cause profound symptom burden, affecting physical, neurocognitive, and social functioning from an early stage in the illness. This can significantly impact on role function and on the experiences and needs of informal caregivers. Access to specialist palliative and supportive care early in the disease trajectory, for those with high-grade tumours in particular, has the potential to improve patients' and caregivers' quality of life. However, provision of palliative and supportive care for people with primary brain tumours - and their informal caregivers - is historically ill-defined and ad hoc, and the benefits of early palliative interventions have not been confirmed. It is therefore important to define the role and effectiveness of early referral to specialist palliative care services and/or the effectiveness of other interventions focused on palliating disease impact on people and their informal caregivers. This would help guide improvement to service provision, by defining those interventions which are effective across a range of domains, and developing an evidence-based model of integrated supportive and palliative care for this population. OBJECTIVES To assess the evidence base for early palliative care interventions, including referral to specialist palliative care services compared to usual care, for improving outcomes in adults diagnosed with a primary brain tumour and their carers. SEARCH METHODS We conducted searches of electronic databases, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO (last searched 16 November 2021). We conducted searches to incorporate both qualitative and quantitative search terms. In addition to this, we searched for any currently recruiting trials in ClinicalTrials.gov and in the World Health Organization (WHO) International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) search portal, and undertook citation tracking via Scopus. We also handsearched reference lists of potentially eligible systematic review articles to identify any other relevant studies, contacted experts in the field and searched key authors via Web of Science and searched SIGLE (System of Information on Grey Literature in Europe). SELECTION CRITERIA We included studies looking at early referral to specialist palliative care services - or early targeted palliative interventions by other healthcare professionals - for improving quality of life, symptom control, psychological outcomes, or overall survival as a primary or secondary outcome measure. Studies included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomised studies (NRS), as well as qualitative and mixed-methods studies where both qualitative and quantitative data were included. Participants were adults with a confirmed radiological and/or histological diagnosis of a primary malignant brain tumour, and/or informal adult carers (either at individual or family level) of people with a primary malignant brain tumour. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We followed standard Cochrane methodological procedures for data extraction, management, and analysis. We used GRADE to assess the certainty of the evidence for symptom control, i.e. cognitive function. MAIN RESULTS We identified 9748 references from the searches, with 8337 remaining after duplicates were removed. After full-text review, we included one trial. There were no studies of early specialist palliative care interventions or of early, co-ordinated generalist palliative care approaches. The included randomised trial addressed a single symptom area, focusing on early cognitive rehabilitation, administered within two weeks of surgery in a mixed brain tumour population, of whom approximately half had a high-grade glioma. The intervention was administered individually as therapist-led computerised exercises over 16 one-hour sessions, four times/week for four weeks. Sessions addressed several cognitive domains including time orientation, spatial orientation, visual attention, logical reasoning, memory, and executive function. There were no between-group differences in outcome for tests of logical-executive function, but differences were observed in the domains of visual attention and verbal memory. Risk of bias was assessed and stated as high for performance bias and attrition bias but for selective reporting it was unclear whether all outcomes were reported. We considered the certainty of the evidence, as assessed by GRADE, to be very low. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Currently there is a lack of research focusing on the introduction of early palliative interventions specifically for people with primary brain tumours, either as co-ordinated specialist palliative care approaches or interventions focusing on a specific aspect of palliation. Future research should address the methodological shortcomings described in early palliative intervention studies in other cancers and chronic conditions. In particular, the specific population under investigation, the timing and the setting of the intervention should be clearly described and the standardised palliative care-specific components of the intervention should be defined in detail.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients diagnosed with high-grade glioma and their family caregivers often experience intense disease and treatment trajectories. Fluctuations in patient's symptoms lead to enormous burdens for caregivers and the risk of developing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. AIM The study aim is to explore patient and caregiver experiences and evaluate the relevance of and satisfaction with a multimodal rehabilitative palliative care programme for patients diagnosed with a high-grade glioma and their family caregivers. METHODS In a longitudinal multi-methods study, adult patients with high-grade glioma (n = 17) and their family caregivers (n = 16) completed a 4-day residential programme and a 2-day follow-up programme 3 months later. Participants completed questionnaires after each programme, scoring relevance and satisfaction on a 5-point Likert scale. Qualitative data were collected during four evaluation group interviews with patients and caregivers. RESULTS The mean overall satisfaction score was 4.80 (standard deviation [SD], 0.55) for the initial 4-day programme and 4.28 (SD, 0.83) for the follow-up programme. Three themes emerged in the evaluation group interviews: (1) meeting peers strengthens social well-being, (2) the value of information and focusing on individual needs, and (3) accepting life as an unpredictable passage. CONCLUSION Participants found completing the REHPA-HGG programme feasible and rated all sessions highly for relevance and satisfaction. Qualitative findings confirm the value of individualised information, acceptance, and peer interactions. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE A multimodal rehabilitative palliative care programme addressed unmet patient and caregiver needs. Peer-to-peer interventions for family caregivers may address individual support needs. Similar programmes may maximise benefit by avoiding planned behaviour changes and enhancing palliative approaches.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sexual dysfunctions (SDs) have been frequently reported among male partners of infertile couples due to psychogenic, relational and/or organic issues related with the inability to conceive. Likewise, male infertility (MI) could be a consequence of sexual dysfunctions. AIM To review the evidence on the prevalence and treatment of male SDs in men of infertile couples and provide clinical recommendations on behalf of the European Society of Sexual Medicine (ESSM). METHODS The MEDLINE database was searched in September 2019 for randomized clinical trials (RCTs), meta-analyses and open-label prospective or retrospective studies investigating the presence of erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or ejaculatory dysfunctions (EjDs) and/or low sexual desire (LSD) in conjunction with infertility. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE The panel provided statements on: (i) Prevalence and association between SDs and MI; (ii) Treatment of male SDs in men of infertile couples. RESULTS ED has been reported in 9% to 62% of male partners of infertile couples, with severe impairment observed in only 1% to 3% of ED cases. Moreover, worse semen parameters have been associated with greater ED severity. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5is) can be safely used to treat ED among patients seeking fatherhood. Male partners of infertile couples are at higher risk of premature ejaculation (PE). Retrograde ejaculation (RE) and anejaculation are a cause of MI and can be managed with electroejaculation (EEJ) or penile vibratory stimulation (PVS) or, alternatively, with oral treatments, however the latter with limited documented success. Low sexual desire has been reported by one third of men of infertile couples. CONCLUSION ED could significantly affect male partners of infertile couple; PDE5is should be suggested to ensure an effective and satisfactory sexual relationship of the couple. Anejaculation and RE should be considered as a possible cause of MI and treated accordingly. Abstract
INTRODUCTION This review examined the: (1) number of publications exploring psychosocial outcomes of adults with brain cancer and/or support persons between 1999 and 2019 and whether there has been a change in the type of research over time; and (2) proportion of intervention studies meeting Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care (EPOC) research design criteria. METHODS Embase, The Cochrane Library, Medline and PsycINFO databases were electronically searched January 1999 to December 2019. Articles were examined against inclusion/exclusion criteria and coded into measurement, descriptive or intervention categories. Intervention studies were assessed against the EPOC design criteria. RESULTS 220 eligible publications were identified. The number of total publications significantly increased by an average of 1 each year (95%CI = 0.7-1.3; p < 0.001). There was no significant change in the proportion of publications by study type across three time periods. Descriptive research represented the majority within each time period. Of the 17 intervention studies, only 7(41%) met EPOC design criteria. CONCLUSIONS Published literature on brain cancer psychosocial outcomes has increased significantly. However, descriptive research dominates research output. To increase high-level knowledge that can guide psychosocial care of people with brain cancer, there is a need to undertake methodologically rigorous intervention trials.

Abstract
ABSTRACTGlioma is a common type of brain tumour that is associated with neurocognitive and psychosocial impairments. This study primarily aimed to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of a videoconferencing format of the Making Sense of Brain Tumour (Tele-MAST) programme. Recruited from a multidisciplinary brain tumour clinic, participants were randomly allocated to the 10-session Tele-MAST programme or standard care, with the latter group offered Tele-MAST after re-assessment. Semi-structured interviews explored participants' experiences of receiving psychological support via the videoconferencing platform. Measures of mental health and quality of life were administered at pre-intervention and post-intervention assessments. Of the 35 patients deemed eligible for the study, 14 (40% accrual) with high grade (71%) or low grade (29%) glioma participated. They were randomized to the Tele-MAST condition (n = 8) or standard care/waitlist (n = 6). Ten individuals commenced the Tele-MAST programme, of whom eight completed ≥8 sessions. The major themes that depicted their experience of the Tele-MAST programme were ease of access and benefits of remote delivery, tailored support and immediacy, and sense of connection versus disconnection. Most participants (63%) demonstrated clinically reliable improvement at post-intervention. These preliminary findings support the feasibility and acceptability of remote delivery of psychological support and highlight the need for a larger-scale evaluation of the Tele-MAST programme.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Telehealth platforms have potential utility for providing remote access to supportive care to people with brain tumour. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of delivering supportive care via telehealth platforms to adults with primary brain tumour and family caregivers. METHODS A systematic search of PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane Library was conducted from 1980 to 1st June 2020 to identify eligible studies. Methodological quality was assessed by two independent reviewers. RESULTS Seventeen articles, reporting on 16 studies, evaluated telephone-based support (5 studies), videoconferencing (3 studies), web-based programs and resources (7 studies) or combined use of videoconferencing and web-based modules (1 study) to deliver supportive care remotely. Caregivers were involved in 31% of interventions. Mean rates of accrual (68%) and adherence (74%) were moderate, whereas acceptability or satisfaction for those completing the interventions was typically high (M satisfied or very satisfied = 81%). Adherence rates were generally higher and clinical gains were more evident for interventions involving real-time interaction as opposed to self-guided interventions. CONCLUSIONS Telehealth delivery of supportive care is feasible and acceptable to a high proportion of individuals with primary brain tumour and their caregivers. It is recommended that future research focuses on implementation outcomes, including factors influencing the uptake and sustainability of telehealth platforms in practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The concept of palliative care is becoming increasingly important in the management of glioma patients. However, the right time for implementation, as well as the individual degree of integration of palliative care aspects, are still a matter of debate. This review updates recent evidence of palliative care in glioma and raises questions for future developments. RECENT FINDINGS According to the disease-specific aspects of palliative care in glioma management, there is an increasing need for a specialized 'neurooncological' palliative care approach.The implementation of palliative care for glioma patients and caregivers avoids unnecessary hospitalization and reduces health-related costs. Moreover, palliative care may be offered in different settings (inpatient/outpatient) according to local health structures, but definitely improves the QOL of glioma patients and their caregivers. SUMMARY There are considerable differences between countries with respect to palliative care in glioma. Major aspects of good-quality care throughout the countries are optimized symptom control, support for patients and proxies by an interdisciplinary team and to provide realistic information to patients and caregivers. The availability of neurooncological palliative teams and multidisciplinary support programs increases well being of glioma patients and caregivers as well as releases pressure on healthcare systems.

Abstract
Background Unaddressed high distress leads to noncompliance with treatment, negatively affects quality of life, and may also have a negative impact on the prognosis of cancer patients. Patients with brain tumors have higher levels of distress than the general population and hence we hypothesize that even routine visits during adjuvant treatment or follow-up are likely to be stressful. This analysis was performed to identify the incidence of distress and factors affecting it. Methods This was an audit of 84 consecutive patients seen in an adult neuro-medical oncology outpatient department who were either receiving adjuvant chemotherapy or were on follow-up. Distress screening with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) distress thermometer was performed. Patients in whom distress was scored as 4 or above were considered as having high distress. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were performed to identify factors affecting distress. Results The median age of the cohort was 40 years (interquartile range, 28.3 to 50 years). Actionable distress defined as a distress score of 4 or more was seen in 52 patients (61.9%, 95% CI 51.2% to 71.5%). Presence of physical deficit (odds ratio [OR] = 3.412, P = .020) and treatment under the private category (OR = 5.273, P = .003) had higher odds of having high distress. Conclusion A high proportion of brain tumor patients either on adjuvant chemotherapy or on follow-up have high distress levels that need to be addressed even during follow-up.

Subjective cognitive functioning and associations with psychological distress in adult brain tumour survivors. J Cancer Surviv 2019; 13:653-662. Abstract
PURPOSE The impact of brain tumour on subjective cognitive function (SCF) has received little attention despite the implications of these perceptions for quality of life. SCF consists of two related yet distinct components, perceived cognitive impairment (PCI) and perceived cognitive abilities (PCA). This study compared the SCF of adult brain tumour survivors and healthy controls and examined demographic, illness-related, and psychological factors associated with SCF. METHOD Sixty-five adult survivors with primary brain tumour (age, 22-75 years), and 65 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited. Participants with brain tumour completed the Brief Test of Adult Cognition by Telephone, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function (FACT-Cog), ratings of physical symptoms, Depression Scale of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-Depression), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale. Controls completed the FACT-Cog, DASS-Depression, and GAD-7. RESULTS Adult brain tumour survivors reported significantly greater PCI and lower PCA than controls, after accounting for anxiety. Higher PCI was significantly related to fatigue, pain, treatment-related side-effects, anxiety, and depression. Lower PCA was significantly associated with fatigue, pain, poorer objective cognitive function, lower education, anxiety, and depression. Anxiety uniquely accounted for 9-14% of variance in SCF. CONCLUSIONS Adult brain tumour survivors were found to experience poorer SCF than healthy controls after accounting for anxiety. SCF was related to multiple factors after brain tumour; however, an independent association with anxiety was identified. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS These findings highlight the potential value of psychological interventions targeting anxiety and cognitive effects to improve quality of survivorship after brain tumour.

Abstract
Meaning and purpose in life are associated with the mental and physical health of patients with cancer and survivors and also constitute highly valued outcomes in themselves. Because meaning and purpose are often threatened by a cancer diagnosis and treatment, interventions have been developed to promote meaning and purpose. The present meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluated effects of psychosocial interventions on meaning/purpose in adults with cancer and tested potential moderators of intervention effects. Six literature databases were systematically searched to identify RCTs of psychosocial interventions in which meaning or purpose was an outcome. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, rater pairs extracted and evaluated data for quality. Findings were synthesized across studies with standard meta-analytic methods, including meta-regression with robust variance estimation and risk-of-bias sensitivity analysis. Twenty-nine RCTs were identified, and they encompassed 82 treatment effects among 2305 patients/survivors. Psychosocial interventions were associated with significant improvements in meaning/purpose (g = 0.37; 95% CI, 0.22-0.52; P < .0001). Interventions designed to enhance meaning/purpose (g = 0.42; 95% CI, 0.24-0.60) demonstrated significantly higher effect sizes than those targeting other primary outcomes (g = 0.18; 95% CI, 0.09-0.27; P = .009). Few other intervention, clinical, or demographic characteristics tested were significant moderators. In conclusion, the results suggest that psychosocial interventions are associated with small to medium effects in enhancing meaning/purpose among patients with cancer, and the benefits are comparable to those of interventions designed to reduce depression, pain, and fatigue in patients with cancer. Methodological concerns include small samples and ambiguity regarding allocation concealment. Future research should focus on explicitly meaning-centered interventions and identify optimal treatment or survivorship phases for implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnosis and treatment of a brain or spinal cord tumour can have a huge impact on the lives of patients and their families with family caregiving often resulting in considerable burden and distress. Meeting the support needs of family caregivers is critical to maintain their emotional and physical health. Although support for caregivers is becoming more widely available, large-scale implementation is hindered by a lack of high-quality evidence for its effectiveness in the neuro-oncology caregiver population. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness of supportive interventions at improving the well-being of caregivers of people with a brain or spinal cord tumour. To assess the effects of supportive interventions for caregivers in improving the physical and emotional well-being of people with a brain or spinal cord tumour and to evaluate the health economic benefits of supportive interventions for caregivers. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; 2018, Issue 7), MEDLINE via Ovid, and Embase via Ovid. We also handsearched relevant published conference abstracts (previous five years), publications in the two main journals in the field (previous year), searched for ongoing trials via ClinicalTrials.gov, and contacted research groups in the field. The initial search was in March 2017 with an update in August 2018 (handsearches completed in January 2019). SELECTION CRITERIA We included all randomised controlled trials (RCTs) where caregivers of neuro-oncology patients constituted more than 20% of the sample and which evaluated changes in caregiver well-being following any supportive intervention. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently selected studies and carried out risk of bias assessments. We aimed to extract data on the outcomes of psychological distress, burden, mastery, quality of patient-caregiver relationship, quality of life, and physical functioning. MAIN RESULTS In total, the search identified 2102 records, of which we reviewed 144 in full text. We included eight studies. Four interventions focused on patient-caregiver dyads and four were aimed specifically at the caregiver. Heterogeneity of populations and methodologies precluded meta-analysis. Risk of bias varied, and all studies included only small numbers of neuro-oncology caregivers (13 to 56 participants). There was some evidence for positive effects of caregiver support on psychological distress, mastery, and quality of life (low to very low certainty of evidence). No studies reported significant effects on caregiver burden or quality of patient-caregiver relationship (low to very low certainty of evidence). None of the studies assessed caregiver physical functioning. For secondary outcomes (patient emotional or physical well-being; health economic effects), we found very little to no evidence for the effectiveness of caregiver support. We identified five ongoing trials. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The eight small-scale studies included employed different methodologies across different populations, with low certainty of evidence overall. It is not currently possible to draw reliable conclusions regarding the effectiveness of supportive interventions aimed at improving neuro-oncology caregiver well-being. More high-quality research is needed on support for family caregivers of people diagnosed, and living, with a brain or spinal cord tumour.

Abstract
A malignant brain tumor diagnosis is often accompanied with intense feelings and can be associated with psychosocial conditions including depression, anxiety, and/or increased distress levels. Previous work has highlighted the impact of uncontrolled psychological distress among brain tumor patients. Given the negative impact of maladaptive psychosocial and biobehavioral factors on normal immune system functions, the question remains as to how psychological conditions potentially affect the brain tumor patient anti-tumor immune response. Since immunotherapy has yet to show efficacy at increasing malignant glioma patient survival in all randomized, phase III clinical trials to-date, this review provides new insights into the potential negative effects of chronic distress on brain tumor patient immune functions and outcomes.

Abstract
Survival alone is no longer an adequate outcome for persons with brain tumors; the quality of the survivorship experience should be viewed with equal importance. Symptom management is a significant component of quality survivorship care. Regardless of their histology, brain tumors and therapies used to treat them produce symptoms that affect an individual's ability to function in everyday life. Common symptoms include fatigue, cognitive impairment, distress, and sleep disturbance. Symptom-based interventions for persons with brain tumors focus on prevention, self-management, and prescriptive interventions targeted to these problems. Unfortunately, little evidence exists to support many interventions, making it challenging for clinicians to provide concrete recommendations. Research is needed to provide evidence in support of symptom-based interventions while novel approaches to these challenging problems are developed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Brain tumor has been found to have a major impact on children's quality of life (QOL); yet, the subjective impact of the illness is still not well understood. This review aimed to investigate factors related to children's subjective well-being (SWB), or self-reported QOL and mental health after brain tumor. A further aim was to determine the consistency between child and parent-proxy ratings of children's SWB and common factors associated with both child and parent-proxy ratings. METHODS A systematic search of PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, and Scopus was conducted from 1980 to May 2018 to identify eligible studies. Methodological quality of these studies was assessed by 2 independent reviewers. RESULTS Twenty studies investigated factors related to children's self-reported mental health or QOL. Fourteen studies examined these factors from the perspectives of both children and their parents. Overall, risk factors for poor QOL included infratentorial tumors, radiation, hydrocephalus, lower IQ, and behavioral problems. Only 5 studies examined mental health outcomes, the findings of which were mixed. Relatively few studies examined psychosocial variables related to children's SWB. CONCLUSIONS Although several risk factors for poor QOL were identified, further research investigating mental health outcomes and the influence of psychosocial factors on children's SWB is needed to guide support interventions for pediatric brain tumor.

Abstract
PURPOSE Research indicates that strong social ties can buffer the adverse effects of chronic illness on psychological well-being. Brain tumor typically leads to serious functional impairments that affect relationships and reduce social participation. This metasynthesis aimed to identify, appraise and integrate the findings of qualitative studies that reveal the impact of brain tumor on social networks. METHODS Four major databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO) were systematically searched from inception to September 2016 for qualitative studies that reported findings on the impact of primary brain tumor on social networks during adulthood. Twenty-one eligible studies were identified and appraised according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. Key findings of these studies were integrated to form superordinate themes. RESULTS The metasynthesis revealed the core themes of: 1) Life disrupted; 2) Navigating the new reality of life; and 3) Social survivorship versus separation. CONCLUSIONS Multiple changes typically occur across the social trajectory of brain tumor, including a loss of pre-illness networks and the emergence of new ones. Understanding the barriers and facilitators for maintaining social connection may guide interventions for strengthening social networks and enhancing well-being in the context of brain tumor. Implications for rehabilitation Social networks and roles are disrupted throughout the entire trajectory of living with brain tumor Physical, cognitive and psychological factors represent barriers to social integration Barriers to social integration may be addressed by supportive care interventions Compensatory strategies, adjusting goals and expectations, educating friends and family and accepting support from others facilitate social reintegration throughout the trajectory of living with brain tumor.

Abstract
Brain cancer is a complex and distressing illness with a typically poor prospect for survival. Worldwide, approximately 256,000 people (1800 in Australia) are diagnosed each year (Ferlay, Soerjomataram & Ervik, 2013). Cancer of the brain poses a double threat – to one's survival and sense of self. Most people with primary brain tumour develop serious neuro-cognitive symptoms (e.g., seizures, memory loss) and experience poor mental health and quality of life, which places enormous burden on family care givers. Not surprisingly, high rates of psychological distress have been reported by people with brain tumour and their family care givers. Psychological distress can persist beyond primary treatment, and often increases in the long-term phase of illness due to the perceived threat and experience of recurrence and functional decline. Over the last decade, there have been many advances in the psychosocial management of people with brain tumour. This paper provides an overview of the functional, psychological and social consequences of brain tumour, summarises some leading developments in psychological assessment and management, and outlines future directions in intervention research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adult brain tumor (BT) patients and longer-term survivors are susceptible to experiencing emotional problems, including anxiety and/or depression disorders, which may further compromise their quality-of-life (QOL) and general well-being. The objective of this paper is to review psychological approaches for managing anxiety and depressive symptoms in adult BT patients. A review of psychological interventions comprising mixed samples of oncology patients, and which included BT patients is also evaluated. The review concludes with an overview of a recently developed transdiagnostic psychotherapy program, which was specifically designed to treat anxiety and/or depressive symptoms in adult BT patients. METHODS Electronic databases (PsycINFO, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane) were searched to identify published studies investigating psychological interventions for managing anxiety and depressive symptoms in adult BT patients. Only four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified. RESULTS Only one of the RCTs tested a psychosocial intervention, which was specifically developed for primary BT patients, and which was found to improve QOL including existential well-being as well as reducing depressive symptoms. A second study tested a combined cognitive rehabilitation and problem-solving intervention, although was not found to significantly improve mood or QOL. The remaining two studies tested multidisciplinary psychosocial interventions in heterogeneous samples of cancer patients (included BT patients) with advanced stage disease. Maintenance of QOL was found in both studies, although no secondary gains were found for improvements in mood. CONCLUSION There is a notable paucity of psychological interventions for adult BT patients across the illness trajectory. Further research is required to strengthen the evidence base for psychological interventions in managing anxiety and depressive symptoms, and enhancing the QOL of distressed adults diagnosed with a BT.

Abstract
When faced with a significant threat to life, people tend to reflect more intensely upon existential issues, such as the meaning and purpose of one's life. Brain tumor poses a serious threat to a person's life, functioning, and personhood. Although recognized as an important dimension of quality of life, existential well-being is not well understood and reflects an overlooked area of support for people with brain tumor. This perspective article reviews the historical underpinnings of the concept of existential well-being and integrates this discussion with theoretical perspectives and research on meaning making and psychological adjustment to primary brain tumor. We then provide an overview of psychosocial support interventions for people with brain tumor and describe the findings of a recently published psychotherapy trial targeting existential well-being. Overall, this article highlights the importance of assessing the existential support needs of people with primary brain tumor and their family members, and providing different avenues of support to facilitate the meaning-making process across the illness trajectory.
