Abstract
Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide in women. Many anticancer drugs are currently used clinically have been isolated from plant species or are based on such substances. Thymol (5-methyl-2-isopropylphenol) and carvacrol are oxygenated aromatic compounds from the monoterpene group. They are the main constituents of thyme essential oil and show antiproliferative, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties. The aim of this study is to compare the antiproliferative and apoptotic effects of thymol and carvacrol on SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cell line. The cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of thymol and carvacrol (100, 200, 400, 600 µM) at 24 h and 48 h durations. The cell viability was investigated by MTT assay and analysis of apoptosis with annexin V assay was determined. The study show that thymol and carvacrol significantly induced apoptosis in all groups as dose and time-dependent (p < .05). The data in the present study demonstrated that thymol and carvacrol have apoptotic and antiproliferative properties in a concentration-dependent manner toward ovarian cancer cells. SKOV-3 cancer cell line was much more sensitive to the toxic effect of thymol than carvacrol.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ovarian and endometrial carcinomas are the two most common malignancies of the female reproductive system. Endocan is a proteoglycan that is specific to vascular endothelial cells. Increased serum levels have been reported in some tumors. The aim of this study was to investigate serum endocan levels in cases of endometrial and ovarian cancer. METHODS Levels of serum endocan were assessed in 27 patients with endometrial cancer and 20 with ovarian cancer, and in 38 control subjects with benign ovarian or endometrial disorders. Thirty-five healthy subjects were also included. Serum endocan levels were measured using a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum CA-125 levels were also measured in the patient and control groups. RESULTS All patients had detectable serum endocan levels among endometrial and ovarian cancer groups except six cases. However, in the benign and healthy control groups, all endocan levels were undetectable except for two cases in the benign group and three in the healthy control group. Serum endocan levels were significantly higher in the entire patient group than in the controls (P<.0001 for both). Serum endocan levels in cases of endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer were higher than in both the control groups (P<.0001 for both). Evaluation of all groups revealed a positive correlation between serum CA-125 and endocan levels (r=.43, P<.0001). CONCLUSION Although benign ovarian or endometrial disorders do not lead to expression of endocan, malignant cases can result in measurable endocan levels. This may be useful in differentiating benign and malign diseases of the endometrium or ovary.

Abstract
PURPOSE To discover novel prognostic biomarkers in ovarian serous carcinomas. METHODS A meta-analysis of all single genes probes in the TCGA and HAS ovarian cohorts was performed to identify possible biomarkers using Cox regression as a continuous variable for overall survival. Genes were ranked by p-value using Stouffer's method and selected for statistical significance with a false discovery rate (FDR) <.05 using the Benjamini-Hochberg method. RESULTS Twelve genes with high mRNA expression were prognostic of poor outcome with an FDR <.05 (AXL, APC, RAB11FIP5, C19orf2, CYBRD1, PINK1, LRRN3, AQP1, DES, XRCC4, BCHE, and ASAP3). Twenty genes with low mRNA expression were prognostic of poor outcome with an FDR <.05 (LRIG1, SLC33A1, NUCB2, POLD3, ESR2, GOLPH3, XBP1, PAXIP1, CYB561, POLA2, CDH1, GMNN, SLC37A4, FAM174B, AGR2, SDR39U1, MAGT1, GJB1, SDF2L1, and C9orf82). CONCLUSION A meta-analysis of all single genes identified thirty-two candidate biomarkers for their possible role in ovarian serous carcinoma. These genes can provide insight into the drivers or regulators of ovarian cancer and should be evaluated in future studies. Genes with high expression indicating poor outcome are possible therapeutic targets with known antagonists or inhibitors. Additionally, the genes could be combined into a prognostic multi-gene signature and tested in future ovarian cohorts.

Abstract
The improved detection of ovarian cancer at the earliest stages of development would confer a significant benefit in the therapeutic efficacy and overall survival associated with this devastating disease. The inadequate performance of currently used imaging modalities and the CA 125 biomarker test have precluded the establishment of screening programs and hindered the development of diagnostic tests for ovarian cancer. Two recently completed large clinical trials of ovarian cancer screening have reported findings of mixed impact, further clouding the issue. Considerable effort has been applied to the development of multiplexed biomarker-based tests and the most recent advances are discussed here. Within the clinical setting of pelvic mass differential diagnosis and triage, several significant advancements have been achieved recently, including the US Food and Drug Administration-approved Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm and OVA1 tests. The development and evaluation of those tests are described in this review. Thus while effective routine screening for ovarian cancer remains a lofty goal, advancement within the clinical management of pelvic mass diagnoses appears to be near at hand.

Abstract
The goal of effective population-based screening for ovarian cancer remains elusive despite intense efforts aimed at improving upon biomarker and imaging modalities. While dozens of potential serum biomarkers for ovarian cancer have been identified in recent years, none have yet overcome the limitations that have hindered the clinical use of CA-125. Avenues of opportunity in biomarker development are emerging as investigators are beginning to appreciate the significance of remote, as well as local or regional, sources of biomarkers in the construction of diagnostic panels, as well as the importance of evaluating biomarkers in prediagnostic settings. As the list of candidate biomarkers of ovarian cancer continues to grow, refinements in the methods through which specific proteins are selected for further development as components of diagnostic panels are desperately sought. Such refinements must take into account both the bioinformatic and biological significance of each candidate. Approaches incorporating these considerations may potentially overcome the challenges to early detection posed by the histological heterogeneity of ovarian cancer. Here, we review the recent progress achieved in efforts to develop diagnostic biomarker panels for ovarian cancer and discuss the challenges that remain.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States and it has the highest mortality rate of all gynecologic cancers. Internationally, there is a five-fold variation in incidence and mortality of ovarian cancer, which suggests a role for environmental factors, including diet. Nitrate and nitrite are found in various food items and they are precursors of N-nitroso compounds, which are known carcinogens in animal models. We evaluated dietary nitrate and nitrite intake and epithelial ovarian cancer in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-AARP Diet and Health Study, including 151 316 women aged 50-71 years at the time of the baseline questionnaire in 1995-1996. The nitrate and nitrite intake was assessed using a 124-item validated food frequency questionnaire. Through 31 December 2006, 709 incident epithelial ovarian cancer cases with complete dietary information were identified. Using Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), women in the highest intake quintile of dietary nitrate had a 31% increased risk (95% CI: 1.01-1.68) of epithelial ovarian cancer, compared with those in the lowest intake quintile. Although there was no association for total dietary nitrite, those in the highest intake category of animal sources of nitrite had a 34% increased risk (95% CI: 1.05-1.69) of ovarian cancer. There were no clear differences in risk by histologic subtype of ovarian cancer. Our findings suggest that a role of dietary nitrate and nitrite in ovarian cancer risk should be followed in other large cohort studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Early detection of ovarian cancer has great promise to improve clinical outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS Ninety-six serum biomarkers were analyzed in sera from healthy women and from patients with ovarian cancer, benign pelvic tumors, and breast, colorectal, and lung cancers, using multiplex xMAP bead-based immunoassays. A Metropolis algorithm with Monte Carlo simulation (MMC) was used for analysis of the data. RESULTS A training set, including sera from 139 patients with early-stage ovarian cancer, 149 patients with late-stage ovarian cancer, and 1,102 healthy women, was analyzed with MMC algorithm and cross validation to identify an optimal biomarker panel discriminating early-stage cancer from healthy controls. The four-biomarker panel providing the highest diagnostic power of 86% sensitivity (SN) for early-stage and 93% SN for late-stage ovarian cancer at 98% specificity (SP) was comprised of CA-125, HE4, CEA, and VCAM-1. This model was applied to an independent blinded validation set consisting of sera from 44 patients with early-stage ovarian cancer, 124 patients with late-stage ovarian cancer, and 929 healthy women, providing unbiased estimates of 86% SN for stage I and II and 95% SN for stage III and IV disease at 98% SP. This panel was selective for ovarian cancer showing SN of 33% for benign pelvic disease, SN of 6% for breast cancer, SN of 0% for colorectal cancer, and SN of 36% for lung cancer. CONCLUSION A panel of CA-125, HE4, CEA, and VCAM-1, after additional validation, could serve as an initial stage in a screening strategy for epithelial ovarian cancer.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD The chemokine network, comprised of mediators of inflammation, has been implicated in the development of a number of human cancers. The eosinophil chemoattractant CCL11 was recently shown to play a role in the development of ovarian cancer. Here we review findings regarding CCL11 and discuss its use as a target in the treatment of ovarian cancer. AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW We review published findings related to the physiological actions of CCL11, its tumourigenic effects, the chemokine network and inflammatory response present in ovarian cancer, and the current state of therapeutics targeting CCL11 and its receptors. Findings published within the last 10 years receive particular attention. WHAT THE READER WILL GAIN An overview of the emerging role of the chemokine network in malignancy and a review of the role of CCL11 in ovarian tumourigenesis. The reader will be presented with a description of the unique aspects of CCL11 action and the inflammatory environment in the setting of ovarian malignancy that make this chemokine an attractive target for intervention. TAKE HOME MESSAGE Targeting CCL11 and its receptors through the use of monoclonal antibodies and small-molecule inhibitors may represent a beneficial new avenue of ovarian cancer treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Tumor cell growth and migration can be directly regulated by chemokines. In the present study, the association of CCL11 with ovarian cancer has been investigated. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND RESULTS Circulating levels of CCL11 in sera of patients with ovarian cancer were significantly lower than those in healthy women or women with breast, lung, liver, pancreatic, or colon cancer. Cultured ovarian carcinoma cells absorbed soluble CCL11, indicating that absorption by tumor cells could be responsible for the observed reduction of serum level of CCL11 in ovarian cancer. Postoperative CCL11 levels in women with ovarian cancer negatively correlated with relapse-free survival. Ovarian tumors overexpressed three known cognate receptors of CCL11, CC chemokine receptors (CCR) 2, 3, and 5. Strong positive correlation was observed between expression of individual receptors and tumor grade. CCL11 potently stimulated proliferation and migration/invasion of ovarian carcinoma cell lines, and these effects were inhibited by neutralizing antibodies against CCR2, CCR3, and CCR5. The growth-stimulatory effects of CCL11 were likely associated with activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, MEK1, and STAT3 phosphoproteins and with increased production of multiple cytokines, growth factors, and angiogenic factors. Inhibition of CCL11 signaling by the combination of neutralizing antibodies against the ligand and its receptors significantly increased sensitivity to cisplatin in ovarian carcinoma cells. CONCLUSION We conclude that CCL11 signaling plays an important role in proliferation and invasion of ovarian carcinoma cells and CCL11 pathway could be targeted for therapy in ovarian cancer. Furthermore, CCL11 could be used as a biomarker and a prognostic factor of relapse-free survival in ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Cancer impacts each patient and family differently. Our current understanding of the disease is primarily limited to clinical hallmarks of cancer, but many specific molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Genetic markers can be used to determine predisposition to tumor development, but molecularly targeted treatment strategies that improve patient prognosis are not widely available for most cancers. Individualized care plans, also described as personalized medicine, still must be developed by understanding and implementing basic science research into clinical treatment. Proteomics holds great promise in contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer because it provides unique tools for discovery of biomarkers and therapeutic targets. As such, proteomics can help translate basic science discoveries into the clinical practice of personalized medicine. Here we describe how biological mass spectrometry and proteome analysis interact with other major patient care and research initiatives and present vignettes illustrating efforts in discovery of diagnostic biomarkers for ovarian cancer, development of treatment strategies in lung cancer, and monitoring prognosis and relapse in multiple myeloma patients.

Abstract
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is often a lethal disease because in many cases early symptoms go undetected. Although research proceeds apace, as yet there are few reliable and specific biomarkers for the early stages of the disease. EOC is an umbrella label for a highly heterogeneous collection of cancers, which includes tumours of low malignant potential, serous cystadenomas, mucinous and clear cell carcinomas, all of which are likely to arise from a number of epithelial cell types and a variety of progenitor lesions. Many, but not all types of EOC are thought to arise from the cells lining ovarian inclusion cysts. In this review, we discuss the hypotheses that have driven our ideas on epithelial ovarian carcinogenesis and examine the morphological and genetic evidence for pathways to EOC. The emergence of laser-capture microdissection and expression profiling by microarray technologies offers the promise of defining these pathways more accurately, as well as providing us with the tools for earlier diagnosis.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have suggested that some dietary factors may play a role in the etiology of ovarian cancer, but the findings have been inconsistent. We assessed the association of ovarian cancer with dietary factors in a population-based case-control study in Canada. Diet information was collected on 442 incident cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed in 1994 to 1997 and 2,135 population controls via a self-administered questionnaire. Compared with women in the lowest quartile of cholesterol intake, those in the second, third, and fourth quartiles had a multivariate adjusted odds ratio [OR; 95% confidence interval (95% CI)] of 1.12 (0.81–1.56), 1.20 (0.85–1.68), and 1.42 (1.03–1.97), respectively (P for trend = 0.031). Higher egg consumption was also associated with a nonsignificant increase in ovarian cancer risk. The ORs (95% CIs) for ovarian cancer were 0.77 (0.60–1.04) and 0.76 (0.56–0.99) among women in the highest quartile of total vegetable and cruciferous vegetable intake as compared with women in the lowest quartile. Women who took supplements of vitamin E, β-carotene, and B-complex vitamins for ≥10 years had ORs (95% CIs) of 0.49 (0.30–0.81), 0.31 (0.11–0.91), and 0.61 (0.36–1.05), respectively. However, we did not observe an association of ovarian cancer risk with dietary fat intake, including saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, protein, carbohydrate, dietary fiber, fruit, dairy products, meat products, fish, chicken, grain products, nut products, baked desserts, margarine, butter, mayonnaise, and supplement of multiple vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, zinc, and selenium. Our findings suggested that ovarian cancer risk was positively associated with higher consumption of dietary cholesterol and eggs and inversely associated with higher intake of total vegetables and cruciferous vegetables and supplementation of vitamin E, β-carotene, and B-complex vitamins.

Abstract
Everytime an oocyte is released at ovulation, the ovarian surface epithelium (OSE) is ruptured and must be restored by epithelial cell proliferation. Ovulation site closure was studied in mice of various ages along with total lifetime ovulation number to investigate the known association of these factors with the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer. Ovaries from Swiss Webster mice were collected at various time points postovulation from 3-mo virgin animals (estimated median total lifetime ovulation number, 92; n = 40 mice), 8-mo virgin animals subject to incessant ovulation (estimated median total lifetime ovulation number, 652; n = 15 mice), and 12-mo breeders (estimated median total lifetime ovulation number, 208; n = 35 mice). Diameters of ovulation sites were estimated by scanning electron microscopy. No differences were found in the rate of ovulation site closure between the groups. Sections of ovaries were analyzed using immunohistochemistry for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). The highest density of immunoreactive cells was observed in all animal groups in the cuboidal cells around the rupture site the day after ovulation. Despite the similarity in ovulation site closure rates between groups, the total number of OSE cells that were positive for PCNA in both the 8- and 12-mo animals was significantly reduced, so the number of stained cells appeared to be insufficient to cover the ovulation site. These data suggest that other mechanisms, such as proliferation of the extraovarian mesothelium, may play a role in the re-epithelialization of the ovary.

OBJECTIVE The enzyme cyclooxygenase catalyzes the first step of the synthesis of prostanoids Cyclooxygenase has been shown to exist in two distinct isoforms: cyclooxygenase-1 is constitutively expressed as a housekeeping enzyme in most tissues whereas the inducible cyclooxygenase-2 has been reported to be involved in inflammatory processes and in the carcinogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution patterns of cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 in peritumoral lymphocytic infiltrates and tumor cells of head and neck carcinoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS Immunohistochemical analysis was performed using paraffin-embedded tumor specimens from 24 patients suffering from oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal and oral squamous cell carcinomas. RESULTS We observed that cyclooxygenase-2 immunoreactivity, compared to that of cyclooxygenase-1, was significantly increased in peritumoral lymphocytic infiltrates as well as in tumor cells. CONCLUSION The expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in both tumor specimens and the surrounding peritumoral lymphocytic infiltrates supports the hypothesis that cyclooxygenase may be one of several important links between chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare survival of ovarian cancer patients with and without a family history of breast or ovarian cancer who are known to be without mutations in BRCA1. METHODS Patients with ovarian cancer were tested for germline mutations in BRCA1 by polymerase chain reaction amplification of DNA for single-strand conformation polymorphism and direct sequencing analysis to examine the 22 coding exons of BRCA1 in fresh and archived tumor specimens. Demographic and survival data were collected for statistical analysis. Survival data were calculated by the method of Kaplan and Meier and compared by the log-rank test. RESULTS Of the 110 patients tested at our institution, 100 were noted to be negative for BRCA1 mutations. After exclusion of nonepithelial histologies, benign tumors, primary peritoneal carcinoma, and incomplete staging, 87 patients remained for analysis, of which 37 demonstrated a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. The two groups showed similar age at diagnosis, stage, grade, residual disease, and type of chemotherapy. Median actuarial survival was 75 months for those patients with a family history versus 70 months for those without (P = 0.73). Evaluation of patients with two or more relatives with breast or ovarian cancer also revealed no differences in survival. CONCLUSIONS Family history of breast or ovarian cancer does not affect survival of patients with ovarian cancer in the absence of mutations in BRCA1. Previously described differences in survival among patients with BRCA1 mutations may be more related to genetic factors than to biases introduced by the presence of family history.

Abstract
To fulfill their role in host-defense, granulocytes secrete chemically reactive oxidants, radicals, and electrophilic mediators. While this is an effective way to eradicate pathogenic microbes or parasites, it inevitably exposes epithelium and connective tissue to certain endogenous genotoxic agents. In ordinary circumstances, cells have adequate mechanisms to reduce the genotoxic burden imposed by these agents to a negligible level. However, inflammation persisting for a decade eventually elevates the risk of cancer sufficiently that it is discernible in case control epidemiological studies. Advances in our understanding of tumor suppressors and inflammatory mediators offer an opportunity to assess the molecular and cellular models used to guide laboratory investigations of this phenomenon. Disappointing results from recent clinical trials with anti-oxidant interventions raise questions about the risks from specific endogenous agents such as hydrogen peroxide and oxy radicals. Simultaneously, the results from the anti-oxidant trials draw attention to an alternate hypothesis, favoring epigenetic inactivation of key tumor suppressors, such as p53, and the consequent liability this places on genomic integrity.

Abstract
Numerous investigations have shown that COX-2 is a participant in the pathway of colon carcinogenesis, especially when mutation of the APC tumor suppressor is the initiating event. Moreover, it seems that the amount of COX-2 is important, since there is a correlation between its level of expression and the size of the tumors and their propensity to invade underlying tissue [40]. Inhibiting COX-2 at an early stage blocks the development of malignant tumors, causes pre-malignant tumors to regress and may improve the outcome once the cancer is completely established. This set of findings seems to link very strongly with the traditional observation that chronic inflammation is a precursor to a variety of types of cancer. By this formulation, inflammatory stimuli increase COX-2 and the downstream events that it induces promote tumor formation. All of these finding suggest that existing NSAIDs will be useful for the prophylaxis of colon cancer and polyps and we eagerly await clinical investigations that will generate guidelines that suggest those individuals that are the most appropriate recipients for such therapy. Although this field has progressed rapidly in the last few years, many important questions remain.

Abstract
Epithelial ovarian cancer is fairly common with high rates in Scandinavia, intermediate rates in western Europe and North America and low rates in the developing countries and in Japan. The 5-year survival rate is less than 40%. Increasing parity consistently gives a strong protection against epithelial ovarian cancer. A lesser degree of protection is probably derived from incomplete pregnancies and lactation. Ages at menarche and menopause are most probably weak predictors of epithelial ovarian cancer risk. Ever users of oral contraceptives (OC) have 30% lower risk compared to never users. The protection increases with duration of OC use, being about 50% after 5 years. The reduced risk among past OC users persists for at least 10 years after cessation of use. Results concerning hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and epithelial ovarian cancer risk are conflicting, but most data point to a weak or no association, but as an increasing number of women use HRT it still seems important to resolve any potential effect. Infertility adds to epithelial ovarian cancer risk in nulliparous women, while temporary fertility problems in parous women do not appear to increase risk. A possible independent risk effect of fertility drug use has not been easy to assess and remains unresolved. It has been particularly difficult to separate the effects of fertility drugs from those of infertility. Tubal ligation and hysterectomy convey protection against epithelial ovarian cancer, possibly through a suppressed ovarian hormone production. The causes of epithelial ovarian cancer are poorly understood, but reproductive hormones are thought to be involved in the aetiology. For a long time the 'incessant' and 'gonadotrophin' hypotheses have been promoted in relation to carcinogenesis. Both hypotheses find support in ovarian cancer epidemiology, and recent progress in molecular biology adds to the understanding of possible aetiological mechanisms. Another hypothesis focuses on the retrograde transport of contaminants or carcinogens through the Fallopian tubes. It is important to establish if the same risk factors apply to the various histological types of ovarian cancer, as particularly the mucinous ovarian tumours seem to present with different risk factors. Another question to resolve is if sporadic vs. inherited cases carry distinct risk profiles. As the hypotheses above do not explain all of the results derived from ovarian cancer epidemiology, there is a need to test additional hypotheses to possibly define preventive programmes and to come closer to the cause of ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Cationic liposomes have been used in many gene therapy approaches. The advantages of low toxicity, lack of immunological response, and easy preparation using cationic liposomes make multiple administrations possible, which may overcome the disadvantage of low transfection efficiency. Cationic liposomes, therefore, provide a promising procedure for delivering a therapeutic gene into cancer patients. Amplification or overexpression of the HER-2/neu oncogene is frequently found in breast and ovarian cancers and correlates with poor clinical prognosis. We have found that the adenovirus 5 E1A and the nontransforming simian virus 40 (SV40) large-T antigen mutant can inhibit HER-2/neu overexpression and reverse the HER-2/neu-mediated malignant phenotypes. By using the cationic liposome 3beta[N-(N',N'dimethylamino)ethanecarbamoyl]-cholesterol (DC-Chol), we successfully transferred E1A and/or large-T mutant into established orthotopic breast and ovarian cancer models. The survival of a treated group of mice was significantly prolonged and the expression of HER-2/neu oncogene was down-regulated in vivo. A subsequent toxicity assay indicated that no significant toxicity was associated with the liposome-DNA complex administration even when we used ten times the dose needed to achieve a therapeutic effect. Based on these data, a phase I clinical trial of DC-Chol-mediated E1A gene therapy for ovarian and breast cancers that overexpress HER-2/neu has been initiated in our institute. In this article, we will review the development of HER-2/neu-targeting gene therapy using cationic liposomes.

Abstract
It appears that ovarian surface epithelial cells activated by contact with gonadotropin-stimulated preovulatory follicles can release bioactive substances that weaken the tunica albuginea and apical follicular wall (e.g. collagenolytic enzymes) and induce cell death (e.g. apoptotic agents). However, a definitive obligatory role of the ovarian surface epithelium in ovulation remains equivocal. Epithelium exfoliated from the dome of ovulatory follicles is replenished by generative stem cell replication and migration from the wound edges. Mutagenesis has been related to successive bouts of ovulation and mitosis. Common epithelial ovarian cancer is a deadly insidious disease, mainly because it is asymptomatic until the malignancy has reached beyond the ovaries. The most important susceptibility factors are nulliparity and association to an affected first-degree relative. It will be critical to resolve whether parity and oral contraceptive use confer significant protection to women with a family history of ovarian carcinoma. Clearly, innovative approaches to non-invasive screening and treatment are needed. Early detection is the key to saving lives (90% cure by salpingo-ovariectomy alone if diagnosis is at Stage I). Active immunization with defined tumor epitopes or (passive) intraperitoneal administration of effector-functional humanized antibodies may be of special value in the regional management of common epithelial ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Because of the reduced risk of ovarian cancer related to prior full-term pregnancies, we sought to determine whether there was any association with a history of one or more incomplete pregnancies. White female residents of three counties in Washington State (United States) diagnosed with ovarian cancer during 1986-88 (n = 322), and a random sample of control women selected from these same counties (n = 426), were interviewed regarding their pregnancy and childbearing histories. Among women who had given birth to at least one child, an additional incomplete pregnancy was not associated with the risk of ovarian cancer (relative risk [RR] = 1.1, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] = 0.8-1.6, adjusting for age, oral contraceptive use, and number of births). For those who had never given birth, a somewhat smaller proportion of cases had a history of incomplete pregnancy than controls (RR = 0.8, CI = 0.4-1.7). In an analysis restricted to ever-pregnant women, a prior induced or spontaneous abortion was not found to be associated with the incidence of ovarian tumors (RR = 1.0, CI = 0.6-1.7, and RR = 1.3, CI = 0.8-1.9, respectively). Other studies of the possible relation between incomplete pregnancies and ovarian cancer generally have observed either a weak negative association or no association at all. It is possible that if incomplete pregnancies do affect the risk of ovarian cancer, their impact might be too small to be identified reliably through epidemiologic studies.
