Abstract
Reproduction is a fundamental trait in the life history of a species; therefore, it is of great interest at all levels within a species, including the individual, ecological and conservational scope. Hormonal studies in reproduction have become relevant because of their implications on the regulation of reproductive physiology. Herein we examined hormonal profiles of progesterone (P4), estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) of adult female Mountain Horned Lizards, Phrynosoma orbiculare, from the Parque de la Ciencia Sierra Morelos, State of Mexico, Mexico. Hormonal concentrations were measured in the plasma of adult females monthly throughout a year and linked to the reproductive cycle of the species and environmental factors [mean monthly temperature (T°), total monthly rainfall, and daylight hours representing photoperiod]. We used direct ELISA technique to assess hormonal concentrations. We report that P4 is linked to pregnancy period, as maximum values of P4 are observed during the early gestational period and decrease to minimum levels during the late pregnancy phase and near the time of birth. An increase in E2 concentration occurs after pregnancy and parallels vitellogenesis in this species. Testosterone concentrations are at maximum levels during breeding and abruptly decrease to a minimum during late pregnancy. The correlation between P4 and T is positive while the relationship between P4 and E2 is negative, but no significant correlation between E2 and T is observed. Temperature and photoperiod have a negative correlation with P4 and a positive correlation with E2, while rainfall is not supported as an important environmental factor in the regulation of these hormones. Also, T does not seem to be affected by environmental factors revised in this study. A seasonal annual steroidogenic pattern is observable in female P. orbiculare that parallels its reproductive cycle characteristics and suggests an endogenous control of reproduction. However, it appears that certain environmental conditions, such as temperature and photoperiod, may influence the reproductive rhythmicity observed in female P. orbiculare.

Abstract
Stress during laboratory experiments can affect the outcomes of ecophysiological studies. The serum corticosterone concentration (CORT), the leukocyte profile, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (H/L), and the presence of blood endoparasites were analyzed as a proxy of stress and immunological state in adult males of the lizard Liolaemus attenboroughi, endemic to Patagonia, Argentina. The results of the ecophysiological variables (preferred temperature, running speed, locomotor endurance, and body condition index, BCI) were analyzed in relation to stress indicators obtained from blood samples taken at three different times: at capture, and on the third and seventh days in the laboratory. Males at capture showed a high percentage of lymphocytes and heterophils and a low of basophils, monocytes, and eosinophils. Haemogregorina-type endoparasites have been recorded in the genus Liolaemus for the first time. The proportion of infected males remained stable during captivity; however, these males showed higher CORT levels, increased percentages of basophils, and decreased percentages of lymphocytes. There was a significant increment in CORT and H/L, and a decrease in BCI during laboratory experiments, compared with baseline values at capture. The performance was not related to the CORT or the repeated blood sampling. The BCI decreased, possibly due to energy reserve mobilization caused by acute stress. This study shows that blood extraction and ecophysiological experiments over 7 days have a minor effect on the stress indicators used.

Abstract
Follicular atresia (FA) has been assumed to serve different functions in reptiles, e.g. helping to develop hierarchies, limiting clutch size, and regression of ovarian structures. Reproductive output is dependent on a balance between ovulations and FA. Excessive rates of FA may not only be detrimental for the survival of a population, but have also been associated with pathological conditions. In order to gain insights into the physiological and potentially pathological processes of FA, we performed a decriptive study on the morphological features of the ovaries in sexually mature female veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus, VC). Of 60 clinically healthy female VC with continuous ovarian cycling and at least one confirmed cycle with FA over at least 1.5 years, 30 were selected for macroscopic evaluation of ovarian appearance and 7 were subjected to histology and immunohistology. While FA of previtellogenic follicles happened at a low rate, expected for a species with two germinal beds per ovary and polyautochronic reproductive pattern, atresia in the late vitellogenic stage affected entire generations of follicles, consequential to ovulatory failure. Histologically, no pathological processes were identified in any of the animals. Rather, three stages of FA (early, middle, late) were defined and vitellogenic follicles showed two distinct morphological types of FA: yolky and cystic. Yolky FA was found in 21/30 (70%) animals, while cystic FA co-occurred in 9/30 (30%) of the animals.

Abstract
Eighteen 5 months old veiled chameleon females (Chamaeleo calyptratus) were used in the study. Seven females received subcutaneous implants with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH) deslorelin acetate whereas eleven females were used as control animals without any implants. Females were kept in five terraria, in groups of four females (in 3 terraria) and groups of three females (in 2 terraria), respectively. A minimum of one female with GnRH implants was present in each terrarium. They were kept under standard husbandry conditions. Females of both groups (females with GnRH and controls, respectively) were monitored for three years. No differences between females with GnRH implants and females without GnRH implants were observed with respect to the presence of large ovarian follicles, number of eggs/female, or number of clutches/female. GnRH implants did not prevent spontaneous reproductive activity in any of the 7 females with implants. Ovariectomy was performed in 8 females (4 females with GnRH implants and 4 control females). Ten females (3 females with GnRH implants and 7 control females) had to be euthanised. In 17 of 18 female veiled chameleons of this study histologic examination revealed heterophilic granulomatous oophoritis. The use of GnRH agonist implants did not prove to be an appropriate method for the control of reproductive function in captive female veiled chameleons.

Abstract
During meiotic prophase I, tightly regulated processes take place, from pairing and synapsis of homologous chromosomes to recombination, which are essential for the generation of genetically variable haploid gametes. These processes have canonical meiotic features conserved across different phylogenetic groups. However, the dynamics of meiotic prophase I in non-mammalian vertebrates are poorly known. Here, we compare four species from Sauropsida to understand the regulation of meiotic prophase I in reptiles: the Australian central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), two geckos (Paroedura picta and Coleonyx variegatus) and the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta). We first performed a histological characterization of the spermatogenesis process in both the bearded dragon and the painted turtle. We then analyzed prophase I dynamics, including chromosome pairing, synapsis and the formation of double strand breaks (DSBs). We show that meiosis progression is highly conserved in reptiles with telomeres clustering forming the bouquet, which we propose promotes homologous pairing and synapsis, along with facilitating the early pairing of micro-chromosomes during prophase I (i.e., early zygotene). Moreover, we detected low levels of meiotic DSB formation in all taxa. Our results provide new insights into reptile meiosis.

Abstract
Reproduction is regulated by multiple factors that influence physiology and behavior to ensure the continuity of species. However, more work is needed to examine the complex relationships between environmental factors and endocrine transducers that modulate reproductive cycles, particularly in lizards. Here, we aimed to characterize the variation in plasma sex steroid levels in different stages of the reproductive cycle in the lizard Sceloporus torquatus and assess whether sex steroid levels were related to environmental factors (temperature, photoperiod, precipitation, and relative humidity) and body condition. Plasma concentrations of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) from blood samples were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and radioimmunoanalysis (RIA), respectively. Our results indicate that sex steroid concentrations were positively related to follicular development but negatively related to temperature and precipitation. E2 increased as the follicles grew, and its concentrations were highest in the preovulatory phase. P4 showed a similar pattern and persisted during pregnancy. Changes in body condition were non-significant and mainly unrelated to the reproductive stage and plasma sex steroids. Our findings indicate that sex steroids change depending on the season and reproductive stage. We observed high concentrations of E2 and P4 in the late vitellogenic and preovulatory stages, probably because of their role in promoting vitellogenesis and ovulation. Additionally, we observed that follicular development is correlated with temperature and photoperiod. To better understand the mechanisms underlying reproduction, future studies of captive populations where environmental factors can be manipulated are needed.

Abstract
Vitellogenesis in oviparous vertebrates is a critical marker of the restart of seasonal reproductive activity. During this process of multihormonal regulation, females allocate a considerable amount of organic and mineral reserves to the synthesis of yolk, with changes in their plasma values. In this work, we determined plasma levels of various metabolites and steroid hormones throughout the reproductive cycle in females of Salvator merianae who developed vitellogenic and non-vitellogenic follicular cycles. We worked for two consecutive years with 20 adult females from the Experimental Hatchery of the Facultad de Agronomía y Zootecnia of the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. Values of metabolites: glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, albumin, total proteins, and hormones: estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone, were determined during the following stages of the annual cycle: hibernation, hibernation emergence, courtship-mating, oviposition, and incubation. Vitellogenic females showed significantly higher plasma levels of triglycerides, calcium, phosphorus, and albumin than non-vitellogenic females, mainly in the courtship-mating stage (advanced vitellogenesis). In contrast, annual cholesterol averages were lower in vitellogenic females. Glucose showed changes throughout the annual cycle regardless of the vitellogenic condition. Total proteins plasma levels had very few fluctuations during the cycle. Among the hormones studied, only testosterone showed differences related to vitellogenic condition, with higher levels in non-vitellogenic females during the entire reproductive cycle. The knowledge of these changes associated with vitellogenesis will improve zootechnical management and will allow optimizing the reproductive efficiency of Salvator lizards in captivity.

Abstract
The relationship between the reproductive (hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal; HPG) and adrenal (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal; HPA) hormone axes is complex and can vary depending on the species and environmental factors affecting an individual. In an effort to understand this relationship in female veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus), the patterns of fecal metabolites of corticosterone (C), estradiol (E), testosterone (T), and progesterone (P) were analyzed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) during ovulatory (OC; eggs laid) and non-ovulatory cycles (NOC; no eggs laid). Glucocorticoid (GC) metabolites in the fecal extracts were characterized by HPLC and corticosterone EIA performance was assessed by parallelism, accuracy and precision tests. The results indicated that the assay chosen reliably measured the hormone metabolites present in the fecal extracts. Regular, cyclical hormone metabolite patterns consisting of an E peak followed by peaks of T, P and C in close succession were observed during both ovulatory and non-ovulatory cycles; relative levels of P and C, however, were higher during ovulatory cycles. Corticosterone metabolite levels, in particular, increased throughout vitellogenesis and peaked in late vitellogenesis (in non-ovulatory cycles) or around the time of ovulation, and remained elevated throughout the gravid period, falling just prior to oviposition. The results provide evidence of variation in glucocorticoid production throughout different stages of the reproductive cycle, including a role in the ovulatory process; the physiology, however, remains unclear.

Abstract
The neotropical genus Mabuya are obligate placentotrophic viviparous lizards, which have a short vitellogenesis that produces microlecithal oocytes and a prolonged time of gestation (9 to 10 months). The hormonal control of female reproductive activity during follicular growth and pregnancy has not been studied, although it is known that the corpus luteum can produce progesterone, but regresses early in pregnancy, being replaced in this function by the placenta. Through enzyme immunoassay (EIA) we measured the plasma concentrations of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in females of a population of Mabuya sp at different stages of their reproductive cycle. Previously, we confirmed the presence of P4 in plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography methods with diode-array detector ultraviolet (HPLC-DAD-UV). The average concentration values of E2 and P4 were compared among reproductive stages and their dynamics were related to what is known in other oviparous and viviparous amniotes. The plasma E2 concentrations of Mabuya sp. are below the levels found in other viviparous reptiles, probably related to the substantial reduction of its follicular growth phase. Its highest concentration was detected during vitellogenesis, related to its function in the growth and maturation of the ovarian follicles and oviduct preparation for pregnancy; lower levels were observed during pregnancy, but they increase at the end when a new vitellogenesis event begins and massive placental maternal-fetal nutrient transfer occurs. High concentrations of P4 were found during pregnancy, related to its function in the maintenance of the developing embryos within the oviduct. The highest levels of P4 were found at early gestation, then they descend from mid-gestation to the end of gestation. Although some characteristics of hormonal control related to the high level of placentotrophy were observed in this species, the changes in plasma sex steroid concentrations during the reproductive cycle in females of Mabuya sp. follow patterns seen in other viviparous amniotes.

Abstract
Conservation strategies for crocodilians often include captive breeding to create stable assurance populations. Evaluating adrenal and gonadal hormone patterns can provide animal managers with data to more effectively monitor animal welfare and reproductive status. This study evaluated the effects of season (breeding, nesting, or off), sex (male and female), and reproductive status of females (egg-laying/housed with a male or non-laying/housed solo) on concentrations of fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM), fecal androgen metabolite (FAM), and fecal progestogen metabolite (FPM) in seven Cuban crocodiles, Crocodylus rhombifer, at the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park. Overall, seasonal changes in FGM and FPM concentrations were only observed in egg-laying females; FGM and FPM concentrations were both higher during the nesting season compared to the breeding and off seasons. Seasonal changes in FAM concentrations were only observed in males; males had higher FAM concentrations during the breeding and nesting seasons compared to the off season. Future studies investigating the use of fecal hormone metabolites in crocodilians are necessary to understand differences between individuals and species, to further elucidate the interactions between hormones and environmental factors, such as social housing, and to develop long-term datasets for the management of this species.

Abstract
The royal python (Python regius) is commonly bred in captivity. To have a successful breeding season, accurate monitoring of the reproductive activity is necessary. The use of non-invasive monitoring methods in exotics is important in order to minimize stress. For this purpose ultrasound has been anecdotally used to monitor royal python reproductive activity. However, there is limited information regarding the reproductive cycle of this species. The aim of the present study is to monitor the female reproductive cycle of the royal python using ultrasonography and gonadal steroid metabolite measurements in the faeces. The reproductive activity of one hundred twenty-nine adult female P. regius was examined during two consecutive years. We performed brief scans on non-anaesthetized snakes using a portable ultrasound system and a 10–12 MHz linear array transducer (MyLab™ 30 Gold, Esaote). Ultrasound features, dimension and echogenicity of the reproductive structures were determined. During the second reproductive cycle, the hormonal profiles of 30 animals were also evaluated, with a monthly collection of faecal samples. These samples were classified according to reproductive stage, as identified by ultrasonographic examination, and the mean faecal progesterone and 17β-estradiol levels were calculated using the results from an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Progesterone levels increased during the reproductive cycle. Estradiol levels showed greater variability, although they appeared to increase before coupling when compared to the levels between coupling and egg laying. The present study suggests that it is possible to identify different phases in the female royal python reproductive cycle: anovulatory phase, transition, folliculogenesis and embryogenesis. Ultrasound is also useful for identifying follicular regression or slugs. Gonadal steroid metabolite measurements from the faeces could help integrate reproductive information. The use of ultrasonography in addition to the steroid metabolite measurement in the faeces gives an accurate picture of ovarian activity in captive adult female royal pythons.

Abstract
Australian lizards exhibit a broad array of different reproductive strategies and provide an extraordinary diversity and range of models with which to address fundamental problems in reproductive biology. Studies on lizards have frequently led to new insights into hormonal regulatory pathways or mechanisms of control, but we have detailed knowledge of the reproductive cycle in only a small percentage of known species. This review provides an overview and synthesis of current knowledge of the hormonal control of reproductive cycles in Australian lizards. Agamid lizards have provided useful models with which to test hypotheses about the hormonal regulation of the expression of reproductive behaviors, while research on viviparous skinks is providing insights into the evolution of the endocrine control of gestation. However, in order to better understand the potential risks that environmental factors such as climate change and endocrine disrupting chemicals pose to our fauna, better knowledge is required of the fundamental characteristics of the reproductive cycle in a broader range of lizard species.

Abstract
In a combined approach, endocrine and ultrasonic analyses were performed to assess reproduction of two syntopic populations of terrestrial Galápagos iguanas the Conolophus marthae (the Galápagos Pink Land Iguana) and C. subcristatus on the Volcán Wolf (Isabela Island). The ELISA methods (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) were used to measure plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4) and 17β-estradiol (E2) from samples collected over the course of three different seasons: July 2010, June 2012-2014. As for C. subcristatus, the large number of females with eggs in 2012 and 2014 were associated with increased plasma P4 concentrations and the corresponding absence of females with eggs in July 2010 when concentrations of both hormones levels were basal indicating reproduction was still ongoing in June and had ended in July. In C. marthae, even though there was a positive relationship between egg-development stages and hormone concentrations, P4 concentrations were basal through the three years that samples were collected, with some females having a lesser number of eggs compared with C. subcristatus. In C. marthae P4 and E2 patterns did not allow for defining a specific breeding season.

Abstract
Comparatively, little data are available detailing the geographic variation that exists in the reproductive endocrinology of adult alligators, especially those living in barrier islands. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (MI) is a unique barrier island environment and home to the Kennedy Space Center (FL, USA). Seasonal patterns of sex steroids were assessed in adult female American alligators from MI monthly from 2008 to 2009, with additional samples collected at more random intervals in 2006, 2007, and 2010. Plasma 17β-estradiol and vitellogenin concentrations peaked in April, coincident with courtship and mating, and showed patterns similar to those observed in adult female alligators in other regions. Plasma concentrations of progesterone, however, showed patterns distinctly different than those reported for alligator populations in other regions and remained relatively constant throughout the year. Plasma DHEA peaked in July around the time of oviposition, decreased in August, and then remained constant for the remaining months, except for a moderate increase in October. Circulating concentrations of DHEA have not been previously assessed in a female crocodilian, and plasma concentrations coincident with reproductive activity suggest a reproductive and/or behavioral role. Interestingly, plasma testosterone concentrations peaked in May of 2008, as has been shown in female alligator populations in other regions, but showed no peak in 2009, demonstrating dramatic variability from year to year. Surveys showed 2009 to be particularly depauperate of alligator nests in MI, and it is possible that testosterone could serve as a strong indicator of breeding success.

Abstract
The annual testicular cycle of the house gecko Hemidactylus flaviviridis in Oman was studied. Plasma testosterone (T), estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) concentrations were measured using a sensitive HPLC-MS/MS detection technique. The ultrastructural steroidogenic features in Sertoli and Leydig cells, which were the major source of steriodogenesis, were examined, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, progesterone receptors (PR) were examined throughout the testicular cycle, using an immunohistochemical technique. The steroidogenic ultrastructural features were characterized by the presence of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) in the form of cisternal whorls and tubular cisternae, presence of swollen vesiculated mitochondria, and association between SER, mitochondria and lipid droplets. The rise in plasma steroid concentrations was closely associated with the development of the ultrastructural features and PR expression in Leydig and Sertoli cells. During the active phase (November-May), there was a significant rise in plasma steroid concentrations (P<0.05) related to well developed steroidogenic features and strongly expressed PR. During the quiescent phase (June-August) there was a significant decline in plasma steroid concentrations, undeveloped steroiodogenic features and weakly expressed PR. The Renal Sexual Segment (RSS) was fully developed during the active phase. The data provides strong evidence that these ultrastructural steroidogenic features were related to the plasma sex steroid concentrations during the testicular cycle.

Abstract
Gonadal activity and plasma steroid hormone (testosterone and 17β-estradiol) levels in males and females of a viviparous skink (Eutropis multifasciata) were investigated. Changes in the hormone profiles were then correlated to changes in environmental factors such as temperature and rainfall and were found to vary seasonally in both sexes. Gonadal activity, calculated using testicular mass and volume, seminiferous tubule diameter and epithelial height in males and, in females, ovary mass and largest follicular volume also varied seasonally. Peak spermiogenesis was in synchrony with maximal vitellogenic activity, but reproductive synchronicity among females was low. Ovary mass and largest follicular volumes were negatively related to air temperature and rainfall. Testicular mass and volume were not related to air temperature, but both were negatively related to rainfall. Rainfall explained a greater proportion of variation in vitellogenic activity than temperature. As for the climatic correlates of seasonal variation in plasma steroid hormones, we found only in males that the plasma level of testosterone was negatively related to rainfall. Taken together, our data show that male and female reproductive activities are more tightly correlated with rainfall than temperature in E. multifasciata.

Abstract
A comprehensive study of the annual ovarian cycle in the house gecko, Hemidactylus flaviviridis, was conducted in Oman. Circulating estradiol (E(2)), progesterone (P), and testosterone (T) were measured during the active and inactive phases of the cycle. The steroid levels were related to the steroidogenic ultrastructural features such as the abundance of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER), the presence of cisternal whorls, and close association of lipid droplets with swollen vesiculated mitochondria and SER. The steroids were measured using a sensitive detection technique HPLC-MS/MS. E(2) levels began to rise in January at the onset of vitellogenesis and continued to rise between February and May relative to ovulation, postovulation, gravidity and oviposition. Afterwards, E(2) remained low during the inactive phase (June-December). P levels increased significantly in March and peaked in April, which coincided with luteinization. P levels began to decline relative to luteolysis (May-June). Afterwards, it remained low throughout the inactive phase. T levels rose significantly in March-April coinciding with vitellogenesis, but decreased rapidly and significantly in May and remained low during the inactive phase. Progesterone receptors (PR), identified using immunohistochemistry, were strongly expressed during the breeding period, but were absent during the non-breeding period. The appearance of the steroidogenic ultrastructural features in the preovulatory and lutein granulosa cells was correlated with the significant rise in the three steroid levels and the PR. As the steroid levels declined, the granulosa cells underwent a general degeneration and disruption of the associated steroidogenic features.

Abstract
The seasonal patterns of two primary plasma androgens, testosterone (T) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), were assessed in adult male alligators from the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a unique barrier island environment and home to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Samples were collected monthly from 2008 to 2009, with additional samples collected at more random intervals in 2007 and 2010. Plasma T concentrations peaked in April, coincident with breeding and courtship, and declined rapidly throughout the summer. Seasonal plasma T patterns in smaller though reproductively active adult males differed from those in their larger counterparts during the breeding season. Both size classes showed significant increases in plasma T concentration from February to March, at the beginning of the breeding season. However, smaller adults did not experience the peak in plasma T concentrations in April that were observed in larger adults, and their concentrations were significantly lower than those of larger males for the remainder of the breeding season. Plasma DHEA concentrations peaked in May and were significantly reduced by June. This is the first study to demonstrate the presence of DHEA in a crocodilian, and the high plasma DHEA concentrations that paralleled the animals' reproductive activity suggest a reproductive and/or behavioral role in adult male alligators. Similar to androgen variations in some birds, plasma DHEA concentrations in the alligators were considerably higher than T concentrations during the nonbreeding season, suggesting a potential role in maintaining nonbreeding seasonal aggression.

Abstract
Most animals show seasonal cycles of reproduction (including cycling of sex steroids). Environmental cues (e.g., temperature) likely play important roles in these seasonal variations but their exact contributions remain unclear. We conducted a two-factor experiment to elucidate the effects of thermal environments and food availability on growth in body mass, testosterone (T) levels and testes morphology in male Chinese skinks [Plestiodon (Eumeces) chinensis]. Skinks in the thermal environment mimicking spring (April) conditions grew slowly but had higher plasma T levels and larger testes with more viable sperms than those in the thermal environment mimicking summer (July) conditions. Skinks exposed to high food treatment grew faster and had higher plasma T levels and more viable sperms than those exposed to low food treatment. Male growth was negatively correlated with reproductive activity as indicated by T levels and testes size. Therefore, both temperature and food availability are important environmental factors that can affect the reproductive cycle of male lizards, and the mechanisms underlying the trade-off between growth and reproduction could involve the regulation of T levels.

Abstract
Reptiles have gained popularity in the North American and European pet trade. Large numbers of captive-born veiled chameleons, Chamaeleo calyptratus, are produced annually but knowledge of their reproductive cycle has been limited to anecdotal observations. This study describes the hormonal changes associated with reproductive cycling in female veiled chameleons using non-invasive fecal evaluation of metabolites of the three principal ovarian steroids, estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), progesterone (P), and their metabolites, by enzyme immunoassays. The hormone patterns were compared with follicular development and ovulation as determined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Three main cycle stages were identified on MRI: the previtellogenic stage (PV) with the absence of visible follicular structures, vitellogenic stage (V) with the presence of round follicular structures >2mm diameter, and the gravid stage with the presence of oval egg structures. Although the absolute values of the baselines and peaks for each hormone varied among animals, approximately 24-fold increases over mean P baseline values and 7.5-fold increases over mean E2 and T baseline values were associated with biological events. E2 rose during vitellogenesis, peaked in late vitellogenesis and fell shortly thereafter. P rose during the late vitellogenic stage, peaked in mid-gravidity and fell to baseline values at oviposition. Ovulation occurred with the decreasing E2:P ratio. T levels varied during the pre- and vitellogenic stages then mirrored P with a distinct peak during the time of ovulation and gravidity. These data provides us with the necessary background for future studies on the reproductive biology of this species.

Abstract
Most of New Zealand’s herpetofauna species are threatened and in decline. Yet, little is known about their basic physiology and endocrinology. This study examined plasma corticosterone (CORT) concentrations in a threatened endemic New Zealand reptile, the Duvaucel’s gecko, in relation to season, sex, body temperature, body condition and female reproductive condition (pregnant versus non-pregnant). In addition, seasonal plasma CORT concentrations were compared between captive geckos from a breeding facility and a wild population to determine whether concentrations of CORT were chronically elevated in captive lizards. Plasma CORT concentrations showed significant seasonal variation, but were not related to sex, body temperature, body condition or female reproductive condition. Geckos, which successfully bred in captivity each year, did not exhibit chronically elevated plasma CORT levels but showed an elevation of plasma CORT concentrations in summer compared with wild geckos. Information on basal CORT concentrations in species of conservation concern can be beneficial for improving their management and can aid in identifying and evaluating stress-related changes in hormone patterns of individuals and chronic stress, which is particularly relevant for threatened species breeding programs.

Abstract
We studied steroid hormone patterns and aggression during breeding in female Galápagos marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus). Females display vigorously towards courting males after copulating (female-male aggression), as well as fight for and defend nest sites against other females (female-female aggression). To understand the neuroendocrine basis of this aggressive behavior, we examined changes in testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), corticosterone (CORT), and progesterone (P4) during the mating and nesting periods, and then measured levels in nesting females captured during aggressive interactions. Testosterone reached maximal levels during the mating stage when female-male aggression was most common, and increased slightly, but significantly, during the nesting stage when female-female aggression was most common. However, fighting females had significantly lower T, but higher E2 and P4, than non-fighting females. It remains unclear whether these changes in hormone levels during aggressive interactions are a cause or a consequence of a change in behavior. Our results support the "challenge hypothesis", but suggest that E2 and/or P4 may increase in response to aggressive challenges in females just as T does in males. Females may be rapidly aromatizing T to elevate circulating levels of E2 during aggressive interactions. This hypothesis could explain why non-fighting females had slightly elevated baseline T, but extremely low E2, during stages when aggressive interactions were most common. Although P4 increased rapidly during aggressive encounters, it is unclear whether it acts directly to affect behavior, or indirectly via conversion to E2. The rapid production and conversion of E2 and P4 may be an important mechanism underlying female aggression in vertebrates.

Abstract
Comparative studies of species differences and similarities in the regulation of courtship behavior afford an understanding of evolutionary pressures and constraints shaping reproductive processes and the relative contributions of hormonal, genetic, and ecological factors. Here, we review species differences and similarities in the control of courtship and copulatory behaviors in male amphibians and reptiles, focusing on the role of sex steroid hormones, the neurohormone arginine vasotocin (AVT), and catecholamines. We discuss species differences in the sensory modalities used during courtship and in the neural correlates of these differences, as well as the value of particular model systems for neural evolution studies with regard to reproductive processes. For example, in some genera of amphibians (e.g., Ambystoma) and reptiles (e.g., Cnemidophorus), interspecific hybridizations occur, making it possible to compare the ancestral with the descendant species, and these systems provide a window into the process of behavioral and neural evolution as well as the effect of genome size. Though our understanding of the hormonal and neural correlates of mating behavior in a variety of amphibian and reptilian species has advanced substantially, more studies that manipulate hormone or neurotransmitter systems are required to assess the functions of these systems.

Abstract
Male jacky dragons, Amphibolurus muricatus, indicate territoriality to rivals during the mating season through the use of stereotyped motor displays. The relationship between corticosterone (B) and testosterone (T) and its effects on territorial display expression were investigated in captive lizards. Results demonstrated that territorial display production was most effectively predicted by elevated baseline T levels. This parallels the heightened T concentrations exhibited by males in the field during the spring mating period. The effect of social interaction on B and T levels was also examined by presenting territory-holding males with a size-matched male intruder. Resident males exhibited clear differences in the level of territorial response evoked by a male intruder, which were correlated with differences in physiological activity. Males that gave no territorial response had moderate B levels that did not change with social interaction, and significantly lower T levels than males that responded to the intruder with territorial displays. Among displaying males, those exhibiting low levels of territorial responses showed no change in B or T. In contrast, high-level territorial responders exhibited acute B increases when faced with an intruder, which might assist in supporting sustained metabolic activity and could possibly reflect differences in the perception of social stress. These same males also exhibited a reduction in T levels at such times, probably due to the acute rise in B. Combined, these results suggest that high circulating T is acting in a preparatory manner to increase the likelihood of producing a territorial response upon engaging in a social encounter. However, once this response has been initiated T may not need to remain elevated to allow continued expression of territorial behavior.

Abstract
While the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) response to stress appears to be conserved in vertebrates, the manner in which it is activated and its actions vary. We examine two trends in the stress biology literature that have been addressed in amphibian and reptilian species: (1). variable interactions among stress, corticosterone, and reproduction and (2). adrenocortical modulation. In the first topic we examine context-dependent interactions among stress, corticosterone, and reproduction. An increasing number of studies report positive associations between reproduction and corticosterone that contradict the generalization that stress inhibits reproduction. Moderately elevated levels of stress hormones appear to facilitate reproduction by mobilizing energy stores. In contrast, pronounced activation of the HPA axis and extremely elevated levels of stress hormones appear to inhibit reproduction. Much of these contrasting effects of stress and reproduction can be explained by expanding the Energetics-Hormone Vocalization Model, proposed for anuran calling behavior, to other taxa. In the second topic, a number of amphibians and reptiles modulate their HPA stress response. Adrenocortical modulation can occur at multiple levels and due to a variety of factors. However, we have little information as to the physiological basis for the variability. We suggest that several ecologically based ideas, such as variability in the length of the breeding season and lifetime reproductive opportunities, can be used to explain the utility of adrenocortical modulation in these taxa.

Abstract
We have detected an unusual polar steroid as a major end product of gonadal steroid biosynthesis in male and female blotched blue-tongued lizards, Tiliqua nigrolutea. In an investigation of the steroidogenic pathways in blue-tongued lizards, we incubated gonads of both male and female lizards with tritiated pregnenolone and identified the products of steroid biosynthesis using thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography with radiometric detection: gonads from both reproductively active and quiescent lizards were examined. The proportion of total radioactive substrate converted to the unknown polar steroid was greater in individuals with hypertrophied gonads (males (N=4) 28.1%; females (N=4) 45.3%) than in those with regressed gonads (males (N=4) 5.9%; females (N=4) 33.3%). Properties of the unknown steroid were identical across all incubations. Incubation time-course information, thin layer and high performance liquid chromatography properties of the polar steroid are presented. The steroid is more polar than 17beta-estradiol, which was not detected, but less polar than all tri-hydroxylated estrogens to which it was compared. The possibility of an alternative estrogen to 17beta-estradiol in some reptiles is discussed.

Abstract
The vertebrate stress response helps animals respond to environmental dangers such as predators or storms. An important component of the stress response is glucocorticoid (GC) release, resulting from activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. After release, GCs induce a variety of behavioral and physiological changes that presumably help the animal respond appropriately to the situation. Consequently, GC secretion is often considered an obligatory response to stressful situations. Evidence now indicates, however, that free-living species from many taxa can seasonally modulate GC release. In other words, the magnitudes of both unstressed and stressed GC concentrations change depending upon the time of year. This review examines the growing evidence that GC concentrations in free-living reptiles, amphibians, and birds, but not mammals, are commonly elevated during the breeding season. This evidence is then used to test three hypotheses with different focuses on GC's energetic or behavioral effects, as well as on GC's role in preparing the animal for subsequent stressors. These hypotheses attempt to place annual GC rhythms into a physiological or behavioral context. Integrating seasonal differences in GC concentrations with either different physiological states or different life history stages provides clues to a new understanding of how GCs actually help in survival during stress. Consequently, understanding seasonal modulation of GC release has far-reaching importance for both the physiology of the stress response and the short-term survival of individual animals.

Abstract
Annual changes in gonadal activity and plasma sex steroid hormone levels in male and female Calotes versicolor [plasma testosterone (T) levels in males and 17 beta-estradiol (E(2)) and progesterone (P) levels in females] are described. In females both plasma E(2) (32.80 +/- 12.91 pg/ml) and P (1.72 +/- 0.79 ng/ml) levels are at their low levels during the postbreeding season when the gonads are regressed. With the onset of recruitment of vitellogenic follicles, E(2) levels begin to rise, reaching peak values (1306.00 +/- 407.01 pg/ml) when the follicles are preovulatory. During this time, plasma levels of P are low. Plasma E(2) levels decline (285.60 +/- 143.0 pg/ml) soon after ovulation, and circulating concentrations of P begin to rise, reaching peak value (19.24 +/- 10.03 ng/ml), during eggshell formation. In gravid females, at mid-gestation, the same pattern of E(2) secretion is found when a second set of follicles undergoes vitellogenesis. However, P levels remain low from mid-gestation (4.06 +/- 2.17 ng/ml) until oviposition. These findings suggest that high P levels are not needed for oviductal egg retention during late gestation and that low levels of P may facilitate growth of a new batch of vitellogenic follicles. In males, plasma levels of T are correlated with the spermatogenetic activity that accompanies breeding.

Abstract
Plasma progesterone (P) levels and luteal and adrenal activities were studied during normal gestation and unusual prolonged period of oviductal egg retention in a polyautochronic, multiclutched lizard, Calotes versicolor. The normal gestation period (approximately 15 days) was categorized into four stages: stage I--a few hours following ovulation, stage II--eggs with shell and embryo at primitive streak, stage III--embryonic stages 16-20, and stage IV--prior to ovipostion (stages 26-27). The gravid lizards maintained in captivity retained eggs in their oviducts for 45 days. Plasma P levels were low in stage I, increased significantly during stage II, declined in stage III, and reached their lowest in stage IV of gestation. 3Beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSDH) activity was greater in lutein cells at stage II and was present in traces in stage IV gestation. Interestingly, plasma P titers that were high in lizards with eggs retained longer though the corpora lutea (CL) showed a trace 3beta-HSDH activity. However, 3beta-HSDH activity was greater in the adrenocortical cells in these lizards than that in lizards during a normal gestation period. The present study on C. versicolor shows that the CL remains active and secretes P only during the early part of the gestation. The drop in P level during the later part of gestation might facilitate growth of a second set of vitellogenic follicles. During unfavorable conditions when the lizards are forced to retain eggs in the oviduct, the adrenal glands seem to secrete progesterone to help in egg retention and in inhibition of oviposition.

Abstract
The bearded dragon (Pogona barbata: Agamidae) is a diurnal, oviparous, multi-clutching lizard from Australia. We examined plasma hormonal responses to capture in males and females during the spring breeding season. Corticosterone concentrations at capture (0 h; < or =3 min after capture) were low (males: 1.81+/-0.63 ng/ml; females 2. 23+/-0.47 ng/ml) and within sexes were unrelated to the time of the day, snout-vent length or, in females, reproductive condition (vitellogenic, gravid, assumed spent). Corticosterone concentrations at capture were significantly and inversely correlated with body condition in males, but not in females. Unexpectedly, neither sex showed significant changes in mean concentrations of corticosterone at 3.5 or 24 h after capture compared with 0 h values. Corticosterone concentrations at 3.5 h after capture did not differ between dragons bled at capture or not. Concentrations of progesterone in both the sexes did not change between 0 h and 3.5 or 24 h after capture. Testosterone concentrations in males at capture were moderate (10.1+/-2.2 ng/ml), and unchanged at 3.5 h after capture. The adrenocortical axis of adult bearded dragons in the breeding season seems remarkably unresponsive to capture compared with many other reptiles. Low adrenocortical responses to capture may be a feature of reptiles known to adjust well to captivity.
