Abstract
Blood coagulation is a complex physiological process critical for maintaining hemostasis, and disruptions in this system can lead to various health complications. Since the effects of specific food groups on a series of circulating coagulation parameters in the population are not well established, this study examines such associations in the population-based KORA-Fit study. A total of 595 subjects (263 men and 332 women) born between 1945 and 1964 and living in the study region of Augsburg were included in the study. Habitual food intake was estimated based on a combination of repeated 24-h food lists (24HFLs) and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Antithrombin III, D-dimers, factor VIII, fibrinogen, protein C, protein S, aPTT, Quick value and INR were measured in citrate plasma. Multivariable linear regression models were applied to investigate associations between the consumption of specific foods of plant or animal origin and hemostatic factors. We found that the consumption of plant-based food groups, including green leafy vegetables (rich in vitamin K1), were hardly associated with coagulation parameters. Surprisingly, a high consumption of dairy products and especially butter were associated with higher D-dimer concentrations. These findings need further evaluation in prospective studies.

Abstract
Previous studies reported an inverse association between healthy dietary patterns (such as Mediterranean diet) and the incidence of cardiovascular events. As the mechanism accounting for cardiovascular disease is prevalently due to the atherothrombosis, where a pivotal role is played by platelet activation, it would be arguable that diets with protective effects against cardiovascular disease exert an anti-atherothrombotic effect via inhibition of platelet activation. There are several and sparse typologies of studies, which investigated if single nutrients by diets recognized as having cardiovascular protection may exert an antithrombotic effect. The most investigated nutrients are key components of the Mediterranean diets such as fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, and wine; other diets with protective effects include nuts and cocoa. Here we summarize experimental and human interventional studies which investigated the antithrombotic effects of such nutrients in experimental models of thrombosis or analyzed biomarkers of clotting, platelet, and fibrinolysis activation in human; furthermore in vitro studies explored the underlying mechanism at level of several cell lines such as platelets or endothelial cells. In this context, we analyzed if nutrients affect simultaneously or separately clotting, platelet, and fibrinolysis pathways giving special attention to the relationship between oxidative stress and thrombosis as most nutrients are believed to possess antioxidant properties.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to collect and compare fish intervention studies. Prospective studies have outlined the beneficial effect of frequent fish consumption on cardiovascular incidents that is attributed to n-3 fatty acids incorporated in fish, mainly eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids. This outcome triggered clinical trials to examine the effect of either fish intake or consumption of n-3 fatty acids via capsules on biomarkers related to cardiovascular disease (CVD). The absence of a recent review focusing on clinical trials regarding fish intake and not n-3 fatty acids supplements rendered necessary the composition of this article. In total, 28 studies on healthy volunteers were found to meet the inclusion criteria. With EPA and DHA intake varying between 0.03 to 5 g per day, biomarkers, such as triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein and platelet aggregation, tended to ameliorate when daily intake exceeded 1 g per day, while the most common inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein, was not affected. In all, fish consumption gives promising results; yet fish micronutrients, total diet fat, as well as other dietary habits may also affect biomarkers. Therefore, all these factors should be considered in future clinical trials in order for one to draw more reliable conclusions.

Abstract
Background The beneficial effect of Δ-17 FAD is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective mechanism of fatty acids against atherosclerotic (AS) damage induced by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and to identify the molecular mechanisms involved. Material/Methods The ox-LDL was used to induce lipotoxicity in HUVECs to establish a model of oxidative injury. HUVECs were transfected with Δ-17FAD lentivirus to induce cytoprotective effects. We evaluated the alterations in cell proliferation and apoptosis, and oxidative stress index, including levels of nitric oxide (NO), malonyldialdehyde (MDA), SOD enzyme, LDH, GSH-PX, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. Results The ox-LDL-induced excessive cellular apoptosis of HUVECs was abrogated by upregulation of Δ-17 FAD. Importantly, Δ-17 FAD converted ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid ARA into ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid EPA. Further, Δ-17 FAD overexpression promoted the proliferation of HUVECS, and inhibited ox-LDL-induced lipid peroxidation of HUVECs. The levels of nitric oxide, GSH-PX, and SOD enzyme were increased, and the activity of MDA and LDH was suppressed by the upregulation of Δ-17 FAD. In addition, upregulation of Δ-17 FAD significantly increased VEGF expression. In vitro tube formation assay showed that Δ-17 FAD significantly promoted angiogenesis. Conclusions These results suggest that Δ-17 fatty acid desaturase plays a beneficial role in the prevention of ox-LDL-induced cellular damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated whether supplementation of enteral nutrition (EN) with omega-3 polyunsaturated acids (PUFAs) affected platelet aggregation, coagulation activity, and inflammatory response in the early stages after esophageal cancer surgery. METHODS Twenty-eight patients with esophageal cancer who underwent the same surgical procedure were selected for this study. All patients received EN, which was started immediately after the operation and was increased to a maximum volume of 1500 ml/day by the third postoperative day (POD). Eleven patients received a conventional EN formula (Ensure Liquid), while the remaining 17 patients received a different formula rich in omega-3 PUFAs (Racol [RAC]). Several markers of coagulation and fibrinolysis were determined in POD 2, while the concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, 6-keto-PGF1alpha and thromboxane B2 were determined on PODs 1, 3, and 5. RESULTS A total of 27 patients completed the study, 11 in the Ensure Liquid group and 16 in the RAC group. Administration of RAC significantly inhibited the postoperative decrease in platelet count. The level of D-dimer was attenuated significantly in the RAC group. Plasma IL-8 levels were decreased significantly in the RAC group on PODs 1 and 3. The anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 PUFAs were confirmed by the clinical findings of lower body temperature. The plasma concentration of 6-keto-PFG1alpha also tended to decrease in the RAC group with a significant difference on POD 5. CONCLUSIONS Early EN with a large amount of omega-3 PUFAs in reduced platelet aggregation, coagulation activity, and cytokine production. All these effects would be expected to be beneficial in patients following esophageal cancer surgery. The clinical significance of the changes in eicosanoid production remains to be established.

Abstract
Background This experimental study examined the effect of the antioxidant drug "U-74389G", on a rat model and particularly in a hypoxia - reoxygenation protocol. The effects of that molecule were studied hematologically using blood mean platelets volume (MPV) levels. Methods 40 rats of mean weight 231.875 g were used in the study. MPV levels were measured at 60 min of reoxygenation (groups A and C) and at 120 min of reoxygenation (groups B and D). The drug U-74389G was administered only in groups C and D. Results U-74389G administration kept significantly increased the predicted MPV levels by 12.77 ± 3.07% (p = 0.0001). Reoxygenation time non-significantly decreased the predicted MPV levels by 2.55 ± 3.71% (p = 0.4103). However, U-74389G administration and reoxygenation time together kept significantly increased the predicted MPV levels by 7.09 ± 1.91% (p = 0.0005). Conclusions U-74389G administration whether it interacted or not with reoxygenation time kept significantly increased the predicted MPV levels. This finding has great clinical interest in blood clotting and coagulation pathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fish currently supplies only 40% of the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) required to allow all individuals globally to meet the minimum intake recommendation of 500 mg/d. Therefore, alternative sustainable sources are needed. OBJECTIVE The main objective was to investigate the ability of genetically engineered Camelina sativa (20% EPA) oil (CO) to enrich tissue EPA and DHA relative to an EPA-rich fish oil (FO) in mammals. METHODS Six-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed for 10 wk either a palm oil-containing control (C) diet or diets supplemented with EPA-CO or FO, with the C, low-EPA CO (COL), high-EPA CO (COH), low-EPA FO (FOL), and high-EPA FO (FOH) diets providing 0, 0.4, 3.4, 0.3, and 2.9 g EPA/kg diet, respectively. Liver, muscle, and brain were collected for fatty acid analysis, and blood glucose and serum lipids were quantified. The expression of selected hepatic genes involved in EPA and DHA biosynthesis and in modulating their cellular impact was determined. RESULTS The oils were well tolerated, with significantly greater weight gain in the COH and FOH groups relative to the C group (P < 0.001). Significantly lower (36-38%) blood glucose concentrations were evident in the FOH and COH mice relative to C mice (P < 0.01). Hepatic EPA concentrations were higher in all EPA groups relative to the C group (P < 0.001), with concentrations of 0.0, 0.4, 2.9, 0.2, and 3.6 g/100 g liver total lipids in the C, COL, COH, FOL, and FOH groups, respectively. Comparable dose-independent enrichments of liver DHA were observed in mice fed CO and FO diets (P < 0.001). Relative to the C group, lower fatty acid desaturase 1 (Fads1) expression (P < 0.005) was observed in the COH and FOH groups. Higher fatty acid desaturase 2 (Fads2), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (Ppara), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (Pparg) (P < 0.005) expressions were induced by CO. No impact of treatment on liver X receptor α (Lxra) or sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (Srebp1c) was evident. CONCLUSIONS Oil from transgenic Camelina is a bioavailable source of EPA in mice. These data provide support for the future assessment of this oil in a human feeding trial.

Abstract
The anti-inflammatory effects of fish oil may partly be due to the inhibition of platelet activation induced by platelet-activating factor (PAF) and other agonists. To investigate this hypothesis, the diets of 12 healthy volunteers were supplemented with 12 fish oil capsules or 12 olive oil capsules daily for 4 weeks in a double blind crossover study. Aggregation induced by PAF (18 and 12.5 nM) and collagen (20 μg/ml)tended to be reduced after fish oil but the effect was statistically significant only in subjects receiving fish oil in the 6rst 4 weeks of the study (P 0.05, n=6). The effect of fish oil supplementation on platelet ATP release was more marked with significant inhibition of ATP release induced by PAF (1200 and 36 nM, P 0.01, n = 12), collagen (20 μg/ml, P 0.005, n = 12) and ADP (15,10 and 5 μM, P 0.05, n = 12). Olive oil supplementation appeared to inhibit ATP release induced by collagen (45 and 30 μg/ml, P> 0.025, n = 12), while aggregation and ATP release induced by arachidonic acid and adrenaline were unaffected by the supplements. Plasma fibrinogen was significantly reduced after olive oil (P 0.01, n = 12) while prothrombin time was reduced after fish oil (P 0.001, n = 12) and olive oil (P 0.0025). Reduced platelet aggregation and more importantly, inhibition of platelet release induced by PAF and other agonists may contribute to the anti-inflammatory effects of fish oil supplementation in a number of disease states but olive oil may also independently affect platelet function and influence the effect offish oil.

Abstract
Experimental salmon thrombin/fibrinogen dressings have been shown to provide effective hemostasis in severe hemorrhage situations. The hypothesis for this study was that swine would still remain healthy without coagulopathy six months after exposure to salmon thrombin/fibrinogen dressings. Initial exposure was by insertion of the salmon dressing into the peritoneal cavity. Three months after the initial exposure, the same animals were subjected to two full thickness dermal wounds on the dorsal surface. One wound was bandaged with the salmon thrombin/fibrinogen bandage and the other wound was dressed with a standard bandage. The animals were monitored for an additional three months. Blood was drawn every 14 days over the six months for immunological and coagulation function analysis. All of the animals (8 pigs) remained healthy during the six month period and the dermal wounds healed without incidence. Lymph nodes and spleen showed signs of normal immune response and Western blots showed development of antibodies against salmon fibrinogen, but none of the animals made antibodies that recognized any species of thrombin. Coagulation parameters (fibrinogen concentration, thrombin time, PT and aPTT) and hematological parameters remained normal over the course of the study when compared to initial values of the subject swine.

Abstract
Previous studies suggested that women synthesise docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) more efficiently from their precursors than men. This study investigated the relationship between diet, platelet phospholipids fatty acids and gender. Dietary intake and platelet phosphatidyl-choline (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) fatty acids were determined in Caucasian 40 men and 34 women. Absolute and %energy intakes of arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and DHA, and the ratios of total n-6/n-3 PUFA and linoleic/alpha-linolenic acids did not differ between the sexes. However, women had higher DHA in PC (1.19 vs 1.05 wt%, p<0.05) and PE (3.62 vs 3.21 wt%, p<0.05) than men. Also EPA (1.10 vs 0.93 wt%, p<0.05) was higher in women's PE. Conversely, men had elevated AA and total n-6 fatty acids in PC. The higher platelet DHA levels and lower platelet AA/EPA and AA/DHA ratios in women of child-bearing age compared with men, may lead to less platelet aggregation and vaso-occlusion.

Abstract
The changes in fatty acid composition of serum and in platelet aggregation induced by supplementation of arachidonate-enriched TAG were investigated in twenty-four healthy Japanese men in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The arachidonate-enriched TAG ingested was an edible oil, extracted and purified from a biomass of submerged fermentedMortierella alpina. Mean daily intake of fish and shellfish by subjects was 87·2 (se5·3) g/d, while dietary intakes of arachidonic acid (ARA) by the ARA group and placebo group were 175 (se12) and 179 (se13) mg/d, respectively. In the ARA group, after 2-week supplementation of 838 mg ARA/d, ARA concentration in serum phospholipids was increased from 9·6 (se0·4) to 13·7 (se0·4) g/100 g total fatty acids, and was significantly different from that in the placebo group (P < 0·001). This level was maintained for 4 weeks but returned to baseline level after a 4-week washout period. Linoleic acid concentration in serum phospholipids decreased from 19·2 (se0·8) to 16·3 (se0·6) g/100 g total fatty acids in the ARA group. Similarly, ARA content of serum TAG increased after ARA supplementation. Neither the EPA nor DHA content of serum phospholipids or TAG was altered by ARA supplementation. The platelet aggregation induced in platelet-rich plasma by adding adenosine diphosphate, collagen and ARA, physical characteristics of subjects, and biochemical parameters were unchanged throughout the test period. These findings suggest that ARA concentration in serum phospholipids and TAG can be safely increased by supplementation of arachidonate-enriched TAG oil.

Abstract
Limited data are available on the fatty acid (FA) composition of circulating lipids and the associations with diet, physiological and pathological conditions, due to the complexity and costs of the analytical process. The aim of our study was to evaluate the FA composition in 108 healthy subjects and to correlate the data with gender, pregnancy, dietary habits, lifestyle, and short-term controlled intake of n-3 FA, using an innovative analytical approach for the collection and processing of blood samples. Ten subjects were also supplemented with n-3 polyunsaturated FA as smoked salmon or capsules for 3 weeks. The resulting blood FA composition was affected by gender, pregnancy, diet and smoking. The data indicate that this new analytical methodology is suitable for assessing associations between circulating FA and various parameters in large population groups, and is applicable to epidemiological studies and in the assessment of the effects of controlled FA supplementation in clinical studies.

Abstract
The first indication of platelet activation is an increase in mean platelet volume (MPV). n-3 FA are known to inhibit platelet function and to reduce the risk for coronary heart disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of EPA and DHA on MPV. Healthy subjects received olive oil placebo for 4 wk and then were randomly assigned to receive 4 g of ethyl esters of either safflower oil (n = 11), EPA (n = 10), or DHA (n = 12) for 4 wk. At the end of placebo run-in and treatment periods, MPV (fL; mean +/- SEM) and platelet count (PLT-CT; 10(3)/microL blood) were measured in the basal state and after ex vivo stimulation with collagen (10 microg/mL), cold (4 degrees C), and heat (37 degrees C). Unlike DHA, EPA lowered MPV as compared with safflower oil (7.2 +/- 0.1 vs. 7.5 +/- 0.1 fL; P < 0.05) and raised PLT-CT (211 +/- 18 vs.192 +/- 18 10(3)/microL; P < 0.05) in the fasting state. Collagen and cold significantly increased MPV whereas heat lowered MPV regardless of treatment. All stimuli decreased PLT-CT. EPA significantly increased platelet EPA (0.2 +/- 0.1 vs. 3.3 +/- 0.4%) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA; 2.2 +/- 0.3 vs. 2.9 +/- 0.3%) concentrations, but not DHA. DHA treatment significantly increased DHA (1.4 +/- 0.2 vs. 4.1 +/- 0.5%) and DPA (2.0 +/- 0.4 vs. 3.0 +/- 0.4%) concentrations, but not EPA. In conclusion, EPA, but not DHA, reduces platelet activation, an early step in platelet aggregation.

Abstract
Increased mean platelet volume (MPV) has been suggested as an independent risk factor for acute myocardial infarction and the increased reactivity of large platelets. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between platelet phospholipid (PL) PUFA composition and MPV in 139 free-living healthy men ages 20-55 yr (vegans, n = 18; ovolacto vegetarians, n = 43; moderate meat-eaters, n = 60; and high meateaters, n = 18). Each subject completed a semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire and gave a blood sample. Platelet PL FA composition and MPV were determined by standard methods. MPV was significantly greater in the vegans than in the ovolacto vegetarian, moderate, or high meat-eater groups (P < 0.01). Both vegan and ovolacto vegetarian groups had significantly higher platelet PL 18:2n-6 and 22:4n-6, and lower 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 compared with the moderate and high meat-eater groups. The vegans demonstrated a significant reduction in 20:4n-6 and 22:5n-3 compared with the ovolacto vegetarian, high meat-eater, and moderate meat-eater groups. Bivariate analysis results showed that MPV was significantly positively correlated with platelet PL 18:2n-6 (P = 0.048) and negatively correlated with 20:3n-6 (P = 0.02), 20:5n-3 (P = 0.005), and 22:5n-3 (P< 0.0001), respectively. In a multiple linear regression analysis, after controlling for potential confounding factors such as dietary group, age, exercise, body mass index, and dietary polyunsaturated and saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, and fiber intake, the MPV was still strongly negatively correlated with platelet PL 20:3n-6 (P = 0.003) and 22:5n-3 (P = 0.001). The present data suggest that 22:5n-3 and 20:3n-6 may play a role in the structural function of the platelet membrane.

Abstract
The effect of dietary fats with varying degrees of unsaturation in the presence of different concentrations of vitamin E on tissue lipid levels was studied in rats. Rats were fed either menhaden oil, olive oil or coconut oil at 15% levels with either 0.1, 0.3 or 0.6 mg/g of vitamin E as alpha-tocopherol for four weeks. Rat serum and liver were analyzed for total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triacylglycerol and phospholipids. In addition, fatty acid composition of serum lipids was also analyzed. Serum total cholesterol and triacylglycerol were significantly lower in rats fed menhaden oil than in those fed olive or coconut oil, while the HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in serum of rats fed menhaden and olive oil than in those fed coconut oil. Levels of vitamin E in the diet had only a significant effect on serum cholesterol and liver phospholipids. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant positive relationship between serum triacylglycerol and total cholesterol, and a negative correlation between triacylglycerol and HDL-cholesterol, and between total and HDL-cholesterol.In the liver, total cholesterol was significantly higher in rats fed coconut oil than in rats fed menhaden oil. Total liver phospholipids were lower in rats fed either coconut oil or olive oil compared to those fed menhaden oil, especially with higher levels of vitamin E intake. Higher levels of vitamin E in the diet appear to increase triacylglycerol and phospholipids in livers of rats fed menhaden oil. In the liver a significant negative correlation was observed between phospholipids and cholesterol. The type and degree of unsaturation (polyunsaturated fatty acids in menhaden oil, monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil and saturated fatty acids in coconut oil) significantly affected plasma and tissue lipids.

Abstract
Despite extensive research on conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) showing multiple beneficial effects in animal models, little is known about the role of dietary CLA in human health. To investigate if the beneficial effects of CLA seen in animal models are relevant to humans, we conducted a study with 17 healthy female volunteers who lived in the Metabolic Research Unit of the Western Human Nutrition Research Center for 93 d. This paper reports only the results from this study that are related to the effects of CLA supplementation on blood coagulation, platelet function, and platelet fatty acid composition. Throughout the study, the subjects were fed a low-fat diet (30 en% fat, 19 en% protein, and 51 en% carbohydrate) consisting of natural foods with the recommended dietary allowances for all known nutrients. After a 30-d stabilization period, subjects were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (n = 10) whose diet was supplemented with 3.9 g/d of CLA or a control group (n = 7) who received an equivalent amount of sunflower oil consisting of 72.6% linoleic acid with no detectable CLA. Platelet aggregation was measured in platelet-rich plasma using adenosine diphosphate, collagen, and arachidonic acid agonists. No statistical difference was detected between the amount of agonist required to produce 50% aggregation of platelet-rich plasma before and after the subjects consumed the CLA, with the exception of a decrease in response to collagen. This decrease was found in both control and intervention groups with no significant difference between the groups, suggesting that both linoleic acid (sunflower oil) and CLA might have similar effects on platelet function. The prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and the antithrombin III levels in the subjects were determined. Again, there was no statistically significant difference in these three parameters when pre- and post-CLA consumption values were compared. The in vivo bleeding times were also unaffected by CLA supplementation (10.4 + 2.8 min pre- and 10.2 + 1.6 min postconsumption). Platelet fatty acid composition was not markedly influenced by the consumption of dietary CLA, although there was a small increase in the amount of the 9 cis,11 trans-18:2 isomer normally present in platelets after feeding CLA for 63 days. In addition, small amounts of the 8 trans,10 cis-18:2 and the 10 trans,12 cis-18:2 isomers were detected in the platelets along with traces of some of the other isomers. Thus, when compared to sunflower oil, the blood-clotting parameters and in vitro platelet aggregation showed that adding 3.9 g/d of dietary CLA to a typical Western diet for 63 d produces no observable physiological change in blood coagulation and platelet function in healthy adult females. Short-term consumption of CLA does not seem to exhibit antithrombotic properties in humans.

Abstract
In the past several years, evidence has accumulated that factors other than conventional risk factors may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Conventional risk factors predict less than one half of future cardiovascular events. Furthermore, conventional risk factors may not have the same causal effect in different ethnic groups in whom novel risk factors may have a role. These newer risk factors for atherosclerosis include homocysteine, fibrinogen, impaired fibrinolysis, increased platelet reactivity, hypercoagulability, lipoprotein(a), small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and inflammatory-infectious markers. Identification of other markers associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease may allow better insight into the pathobiology of atherosclerosis and facilitate the development of preventive and therapeutic measures. In this review, we discuss the evidence associating these factors in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, the mechanism of risk, and the clinical implications of this knowledge.

Abstract
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a 22-carbon long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid of the omega-3 family, is a major structural component of neural membranes and is a particularly important nutrient during infant development. New safe and well-defined sources of DHA are required for infant formula fortification and dietary supplementation. DHASCO oil is an algal-derived triglyceride containing 40-50% DHA. Previous studies have shown that DHASCO oil is neither mutagenic nor toxic in acute or 28-day subchronic tests. To further establish the safety of this oil, a 90-day subchronic toxicity study in rats which included haematology, clinical chemistry, pathology and ophthalmologic, neurobehavioural and neuropathological assessments, using doses of 0.5 and 1.25g/kg body weight/day was performed. There were no treatment-related adverse effects in any of the parameters measured at either dose. Based on these results, the no-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) for DHASCO oil under the conditions of this study corresponds to the highest dose level. The DHA in the DHASCO oil was bioavailable, resulting in significant elevations in the levels of this fatty acid in liver, heart and brain after 90 days of administration. In conclusion, this 90-day subchronic toxicity study provides additional evidence that DHASCO oil is a safe and bioavailable source of dietary DHA.

Abstract
The coagulation, fibrinolytic, and platelet activating systems are complex and interact extensively, and with other systems such as inflammation. Key reactions often require biomembranes, suggesting that dietary lipids, to the extent that they influence membrane composition, may have important regulatory roles. Also, recent evidence suggests that both postprandial and fasting lipoproteins may be associated with either factor levels or activation state or both. This issue has added importance because several hemostatic and fibrinolytic factors are known CVD risk factors. Although there are associations between fasting lipid levels and several coagulation and fibrinolytic factors, the mechanisms are unclear, as are the implications for intervention. In general, postprandial lipids are at least somewhat procoagulant because they activate factor VII. It remains to be demonstrated, however, that this postprandial activation has important clinical correlates. Dietary supplementation with marine omega-3 fatty acids does prolong the bleeding time and may decrease thrombotic potential; however, other than this, little is known about the direct effects of dietary fatty acids on hemostatic and fibrinolytic activities. Much work is needed in carefully controlled studies to expand our knowledge in this important area.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the effects of canola oil on platelet characteristics, blood lipids and growth in exclusively formula-fed piglets. Piglets were fed from birth to 10 or 18 d with formula containing 51% energy from fat, with 100% fat as canola or soybean oil; 26% soybean, 59% high oleic acid sunflower and 12% flax oil (canola mimic); or 26% canola (canola blend) or soybean (soybean blend) with high oleic acid sunflower, palm and coconut oil. The canola mimic provided similar carbon chain 16 and 18 fatty acids without the sterol or 20:1 and erucic acid (22:1) of canola oil. The oil blends provided formula resembling infant formulas but with higher 16:0 and lower unsaturated fatty acid levels than in canola or soybean oil. Body weight, weight gain and heart and liver weight were not different after 10 or 18 d feeding canola when compared to soybean oil alone or blended oil formulas. Piglets fed formulas with 100% canola oil had lower platelet counts than piglets fed formula soybean oil or the canola oil mimic. Platelet counts were lower, and platelet distribution width and volume were higher, when formulas with 100% canola or soybean rather than the blended oil formulas were fed. The results show that formula fat composition influences the developing hematological system and that canola oil suppresses the normal developmental increase in platelet count in piglets by a mechanism apparently unrelated to the formula 16:0, 18:1, 18:2(n-6) or 18:3(n-3), or plasma phospholipid 20:4(n-6) or 20:5(n-3).

Abstract
Nonhuman primates are of interest as models of human physiology to study the effect of multiple pregnancies on birth weight. Reference plasma and red blood cell (RBC) total phospholipids fatty acids were established in nonpregnant breeding female Vervet monkeys. Twenty-three clinically healthy nonpregnant Vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), contained in a controlled closed environment and consuming a high carbohydrate diet (68 E%) that contained 20 E% fat and 12 E% protein were sampled for blood during a cross-sectional study. A low intake of omega3 fatty acids was reflected by a high omega6/omega3 ratio (66:1) of the diet. Inverse relations were seen between plasma and RBC total phospholipid fatty acids, 18:2omega6, 20:3omega6, and 20:4omega6, which suggested selective incorporation in membranes. Low levels of 20:5omega3 and 22:6omega3 of plasma and RBC total phospholipids render Vervet monkeys as ideal subjects to study the effect of omega3 fatty acid supplementation on pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
The effect of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the absence of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been studied infrequently in humans under controlled conditions. This 120-d study followed healthy, adult male volunteers who lived in the metabolic research unit (MRU) of the Western Human Nutrition Research Center for the entire study. The basal (low-DHA) diet consisted of natural foods (30 en% fat, 15 en% protein, and 55 en% carbohydrate), containing < 50 mg/d of DHA, and met the recommended daily intake for all essential nutrients. The high-DHA (intervention) diet was similar except that 6 g/d of DHA in the form of a triglyceride containing 40% DHA replaced an equal amount of safflower oil in the basal diet. The subjects (ages 20 to 39) were within -10 to +20% of ideal body weight, nonsmoking, and not allowed alcohol in the MRU. Their exercise level was constant, and their body weights were maintained within 2% of entry level. They were initially fed the low-DHA diet for 30 d. On day 31, six subjects (intervention, group A) were placed on the high-DHA diet; the other four subjects (controls, group B) remained on the low-DHA diet. Platelet aggregation in platelet-rich plasma was determined using ADP, collagen, and arachidonic acid. No statistical differences could be detected between the amount of agonist required to produce 50% aggregation of platelet-rich plasma before and after the subjects consumed the high-DHA diet. The prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and the antithrombin-III levels in the subjects were determined, and, again, there were no statistically significant differences in these three parameters when their values were compared before and after the subjects consumed the high-DHA diet. In addition, the in vivo bleeding times did not show any significant difference before and after the subjects consumed the high-DHA diet (9.4 +/- 3.1 min before and 8.0 +/- 3.4 min after). Platelets from the volunteers exhibited more than a threefold increase in their DHA content from 1.54 +/- 0.16 to 5.48 +/- 1.21 (wt%) during the DHA feeding period. The EPA content of the subjects' platelets increased from 0.34 +/- 0.12 to 2.67 +/- 0.91 (wt%) during the high-DHA diet despite the absence of EPA in the subjects' diets. The results from this study on blood clotting parameters and in vitro platelet aggregation suggest that adding 6 g/d of dietary DHA for 90 d to a typical Western diet containing less than 50 mg/d of DHA produces no observable physiological changes in blood coagulation, platelet function, or thrombotic tendencies in healthy, adult males.

Abstract
Normal, healthy male volunteers (n = 6) were fed diets [high docosahexaenoic acid-DHA] containing 6 g/d of DHA for 90 d. The stabilization (low-DHA) diet contained less than 50 mg/d of DHA. A control group (n = 4) remained on the low-DHA diet for the duration of the study (120 d). Blood samples were drawn on study days 30 (end of the stabilization period), 75 (midpoint of the intervention period), and 120 (end of the intervention period). Adipose tissue (AT) samples were taken on days 30 and 120. The plasma cholesterol (C), low density lipoprotein (LDL)-C and apolipoproteins (apo) [Al, B, and lipoprotein (a)] were unchanged after 90 d, but the triglycerides (TAG) were reduced from a mean value of 76.67 +/- 24.32 to 63.83 +/- 16.99 mg/dL (n = 6, P < 0.007 using a paired t-test) and the high density lipoprotein (HDL)-C increased from 34.83 +/- 4.38 mg/dL to 37.83 +/- 3.32 mg/dL (n = 6, P < 0.017 using a paired t-test). The control group showed no significant reduction in plasma TAG levels. Apo-E, however, showed a marked increase in the volunteers' plasma after 90 d on the high-DHA diet, from 7.06 +/- 4.47 mg/dL on study day 30 to 12.01 +/- 4.96 mg/dL on study day 120 (P < 0.002 using a paired t-test). The control subjects showed no significant change in the apo-E in their plasma (8.46 +/- 2.90 on day 30 vs. 8.59 +/- 2.97 on day 120). The weight percentage of plasma DHA rose from 1.83 +/- 0.22 to 8.12 +/- 0.76 after 90 d on the high-DHA diet. Although these volunteers were eating a diet free of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), plasma EPA levels rose from 0.38 +/- 0.05 to 3.39 +/- 0.52 (wt%) after consuming the high-DHA diet. The fatty acid composition of plasma lipid fractions--cholesterol esters, TAG, and phospholipid--showed marked similarity in the enrichment of DHA, about 10%, after the subjects consumed the high-DHA diet. The DHA content of these plasma lipid fractions varied from less than 1% (TAG) to 3.5% (phospholipids) at baseline, study day 30. EPA also increased in all plasma lipid fractions after the subjects consumed the high-DHA diet. There were no changes in the plasma DHA or EPA levels in the control group. Consumption of DHA also caused an increase in AT levels of DHA, from 0.10 +/- 0.02 to 0.31 +/- 0.07 (wt%) (n = 6, P < 0.001 using a paired t-test), but the amount of EPA in their AT did not change. Thus, dietary DHA will lower plasma TAG without EPA, and DHA is retroconverted to EPA in significant amounts. Dietary DHA appears to enhance apo-E synthesis in the liver. It appears that DHA can be a safe and perhaps beneficial supplement to human diets.

Abstract
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) are secreted in human milk and consumed by the nursing neonate but are not present in infant formulas currently available in the US. Supplementation of formulas with DHA and ARA may be particularly important for premature infants, who have less accretion of these fatty acids in utero than term infants. Some experts suggest that DHA and ARA should be added to infant formulas. Common sources of these fatty acids (e.g. fish oils, egg yolk lipids) are not optimal for infants in that they contain disproportionate amounts of other fatty acids. This 4-wk study examined the safety of a high-DHA algal oil and a high-ARA fungal oil, blended so that the DHA:ARA ratio approximates that in human milk. Rats were fed the blend at levels representing three, 11 and 22 times the anticipated infant exposure. Control animals were fed either a high-fat diet (13.1%, w/w; equivalent to the fat content of the treated groups) or a low-fat diet (5%, w/w). There were no treatment-related differences in body weight, food intake, organ weights, haematology or clinical chemistry. Thus, this study indicates that a blend of algal and fungal oils is a safe source of DHA and ARA as it produced no adverse effects in rats when administered for 4 wk at levels up to 22 times the expected infant exposure.

Abstract
While there are many reports of studies that fed arachidonic acid (AA) to animals, there are very few reports of AA feeding to humans under controlled conditions. This 130-d study was conceived as a controlled, symmetrical crossover design with healthy, adult male volunteers. They lived in the metabolic research unit (MRU) of the Western Human Nutrition Research (WHNRC) for the entire study. All food was prepared by the WHNRC kitchen. The basal (low-AA) diet consisted of natural foods (30 en% fat, 15 en% protein, and 55 en% carbohydrate), containing 210 mg/d of AA, and met the recommended daily allowance for all nutrients. The high-AA (intervention) diet was similar except that 1.5 g/d of AA in the form of a triglyceride containing 50% AA replaced an equal amount of high-oleic safflower oil in the basal diet. The subjects (ages 20 to 39) were within -10 to +20% of ideal body weight, nonsmoking, and not allowed alcohol in the MRU. Their exercise level was constant, and their body weights were maintained within 2% of entry level. Subjects were initially fed the low-AA diet for 15 d. On day 16, half of the subjects (group A) wee placed on the high-AA diet, and the other group (B) remained on the low-AA diets. On day 65, the two groups switched diets. On day 115, group B returned to the low-AA diet. This design, assuming no carryover effect, allowed us to merge the data from the two groups, with the data comparison days being 65 (low-AA) and 115 (high-AA) for group B and 130 (low-AA) and 65 (high-AA) for group A. The main indices studied were the fatty acid composition of the plasma, red blood cells, platelets, and adipose tissue; in vitro platelet aggregation, bleeding times, clotting factors; immune response as measured by delayed hypersensitivity skin tests, cellular proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in response to various mitogens and antigens, natural killer cell activity, and response to measles/mumps/rubella and influenza vaccines; the metabolic conversion of deuterated linoleic acid to AA and the metabolic fate of deuterated AA in the subjects on and off the high-AA diet; and the production of eicosanoids as measured by excretion of 11-DTXB2 and PGI2-M in urine. The results of these studies will be presented in the next five papers from this symposium.

Arachidonic acid (AA) is the precursor of thromboxane and prostacyclin, two of the most active compounds related to platelet function. The effect of dietary AA on platelet function in humans is not understood although a previous study suggested dietary AA might have adverse physiological consequences on platelet function. Here normal healthy male volunteers (n = 10) were fed diets containing 1.7 g/d of AA for 50 d. The control diet contained 210 mg/d of AA. Platelet aggregation in the platelet-rich plasma was determined using ADP, collagen, and AA. No statistical differences could be detected between the aggregation before and after consuming the high-AA diet. The prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, and the antithrombin III levels in the subjects were determined also. There were no statistically significant differences in these three parameters when the values were compared before and after they consumed the high-AA diet. The in vivo bleeding times also did not show a significant difference before and after the subjects consumed the high-AA diet. Platelets exhibited only small changes in their AA content during the AA feeding period. The results from this study on blood clotting parameters and in vitro platelet aggregation suggest that adding 1.5 g/d of dietary AA for 50 d to a typical Western diet containing about 200 mg of AA produces no observable physiological changes in blood coagulation and thrombotic tendencies in healthy, adult males compared to the unsupplemented diet. Thus, moderate intakes of foods high in AA have few effects on blood coagulation, platelet function, or platelet fatty acid composition.

Abstract
In most studies reporting the effects of high-fat (HF) and low-fat (LF) diets on human plasma fatty acids (FA) and lipoprotein levels, the design involved adding to the diet an oil that had an FA composition (FAC) very different from the FAC of the control diet. Thus, it is difficult to determine if simply reducing the fat content of the diet without changing the dietary FAC changes the tissue FAC or alters plasma lipid levels. In this study, we fed diets that contained either 22 or 39% of calories from fat, but had no differences in their FAC, for 50 d to a group (n = 11) of healthy men (20-35 y). Thus, the polyunsaturated/saturated ratios (1.0) of the diets were identical as were the n-3/n-6 ratio and the monounsaturated-to-total fat ratios. The diets contained (wt% of total fat) approximately 28% saturated FA, 33% monounsaturated cis-FA, 6% monounsaturated trans-FA, 22% n-6 polyunsaturated FA, and 7% n-3 polyunsaturated FA, and 4% other minor FA. The diets consisted of natural foods and were formulated to contain 16 en% protein, either 45 or 62 en% carbohydrate (CHO) and at least the recommended daily allowance for all micronutrients. Both diets contained 360 mg of cholesterol per day. All subjects were given the HF diet for 20 d, and then six were placed on the LF and the other five remained on the HF diet for 50 d. The two groups were crossed-over for the remaining 50 d of the study. The subjects' baseline total cholesterol level was 173 mg/dl, after 50 d on the HF diet it was 177 mg/dl and after 50 d on the LF diet, 173 mg/dl. The differences were not significant, and there were no significant changes in either the LDL or HDL cholesterol levels with either diet. Triglyceride levels, and consequently very low density lipoprotein levels, rose significantly on the LF, higher CHO diet compared to the levels found in the subjects on the HF diet (91.5 and 66.4 mg/dl respectively, P < 0.002). The linoleic acid content of the plasma, platelets, and red blood cells was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in the LF diet compared to HF diet, without any obvious physiological effects. Hence, many earlier observations indicating reductions in plasma lipid levels when people are on LF diets may be due to changes in the FAC of the diet, not the reduction in fat calories.

Abstract
Abnormalities in lipid metabolism have been reported in numerous patients with retinitis pigmentosa. As an initial step in evaluating these anomalies, two trials of fatty acid intervention were conducted with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP) patients and controls. The first trial addressed absorption and incorporation of omega 3 long-chain fatty acids from a fish-oil concentrate into red blood cell (RBC) lipids. The utilization of omega 3 long-chain fatty acids by adRP patients was found to be equivalent to that of controls. The second trial addressed the conversion of precursor, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 omega 3), to end-product, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 omega 3), following oral supplementation of EPA ethyl ester. Although the levels of EPA and the intermediate, docosapentaenoic acid (22:5 omega 3), were both elevated by EPA supplementation in RBCs of adRP patients with rhodopsin gene mutations and controls, DHA production was elevated only in controls. Based on these results, we suggest the presence of a metabolic defect in the final stages of DHA biosynthesis.

Abstract
To test if linolenic acid (18:3n-3) from vegetable oils would affect bleeding times and platelet counts in newborns, piglets were used as a model fed milk replacer diets containing 25% (by wt) vegetable oils or oil mixtures for 28 d and compared to sow-reared piglets. The oils tested included soybean, canola, olive, high oleic sunflower (HOAS), a canola/coconut mixture and a mixture of oils mimicking canola in fatty acid composition. All piglets fed the milk replacer diets showed normal growth. Bleeding times increased after birth from 4-6 min to 7-10 min by week 4 (P < 0.001), and were higher in pigs fed diets containing 18:3n-3, as well as in sow-reared piglets receiving n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the milk, as compared to diets low in 18:3n-3. Platelet numbers increased within the first week in newborn piglets from 300 to 550 x 10(9)/L, and remained high thereafter. Milk replacer diets, containing vegetable oils, generally showed a transient delay in the rise of platelet numbers, which was partially associated with an increased platelet volume. The oils showed differences in the length of delay, but by the third week of age, all platelet counts were > 500 x 10(9)/L. The delay in rise in platelet counts appeared to be related to the fatty acid composition of the oil, as the effect was reproduced by a mixture of oils with a certain fatty acid profile, and disappeared upon the addition of saturated fatty acids to the vegetable oil. There were no alterations in the coagulation factors due to the dietary oils. Blood plasma, platelets and red blood cell membranes showed increased levels of 18:3n-3 and long-chain n-3 PUFA in response to dietary 18:3n-3. The level of saturated fatty acids in blood lipids was generally lower in canola and HOAS oil-fed piglets as compared to piglets fed soybean oil or reared with the sow. The results suggest that consumption of milk replacer diets containing vegetable oils rich in 18:3n-3 does not represent a bleeding risk, and that the transient lower platelet count can be counterbalanced by the addition of saturated fatty acids to the vegetable oils.

Abstract
Wild howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) get most of their calories from carbohydrates (65%) and fats (18%) of native tropical plants, but little is known about their intake of individual fatty acids. The fatty acid composition of several natural food sources of howler monkeys collected in Panama was determined by gas-liquid chromatography. The predominant fatty acids were palmitic (30%), linoleic (23%), alpha-linolenic (16%) and oleic (15%). Fatty acids with less than 16, and more than 18, carbon chains were uncommon (0-7%). Although total saturated fatty acids were high in some specific food sources (22-54% of total fatty acids and 8 energy %), most of the calories from fat in the animals' diets are derived from mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids (9.75 energy %). All food sources had significant amounts of the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (2.9 energy %). In terms of human diets, the howler monkey's fat consumption would not be considered atherogenic. Unless these animals show a particular adverse susceptibility to dietary fat, it is unlikely that their fat intake is the primary cause of the low, but significant, incidence of atherosclerosis that develops in these animals in the wild state.

Abstract
In this study we investigated the output of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and malondialdehyde (MDA), as thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-MDA adduct, in the urine from subjects eating a diet in which the only source of n-3 long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids was fresh salmon. Nine healthy men, ages 30-65, were confined in the United States Department of Agriculture Western Human Nutrition Research Center, San Francisco, CA, for 100 d; food intake and exercise levels were controlled. All subjects were placed on a stabilization diet (StD) for 20 d, then six were fed the salmon diet for 40 d. The others remained on the StD. The groups switched diets for the last 40 d. Both diets were isocaloric (16% protein, 54% CHO and 30% fat by energy %). The salmon diet contained 7.5% of calories from n-6 fatty acids (FAs) and 2% from n-3 FAs, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in a 50:60 ratio, while the StD contained 7.5% from n-6 FAs and < 0.3% n-3 FAs (with presumably no significant amounts of C20 or C22 n-3 FAs). Twenty-four hour urinary output was collected, and 2% 3-d pool samples prepared for analysis of urinary TBARS and the TBA-MDA adduct. The total urinary output of each individual varied considerably, and on a daily basis the concentration of autoxidation products in an individual's urine varied also.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Platelet lipid composition is important to normal platelet morphology and function, and is influenced by dietary fatty acids and cholesterol. The fatty acid composition and cholesterol content of infant formulas differs from those of human milk, but the possible effects on platelet lipids in young infants is not known. This was studied in piglets fed from birth to 18 d of age with one of eight formulas differing in saturated fatty acid chain length, or content of 18:1, 20:5n-3 plus 22:6n-3, or cholesterol. A reference group of piglets fed sow milk was also studied. Sow milk has a fatty acid composition and cholesterol content similar to that of human milk. Piglets fed formulas high in 18:1 (34.9-40.8% wt fatty acids) and low in 16.0 (< or = 6.5% wt fatty acids) had lower platelet counts and greater platelet size than piglets fed sow milk (40.4% 18:1, 30.7% 16:0). Piglets fed formulas high in 16:0 (27-29.6%) and 18:1 (40-40.6%), or low in both 16:0 (5.9-6.1%) and 18:1 (10.8-11.2%), had similar platelet counts and size to piglets fed sow milk. Platelet phospholipid % 20:4n-6 was lower in all the groups of piglets fed formula than in the group fed sow milk. Addition of fish oil with 20:5n-3 plus 22:6n-3 to the formula further decreased platelet phospholipid 20:4n-6. Addition of cholesterol to the formula increased the platelet phospholipid % 20:4n-6 and platelet volume.

Abstract
We examined the effect of dietary alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) on the indices of lipid and coagulation status and on the fatty acid composition of serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMNC) lipids in ten healthy men (age 21-37 yr) who consumed all their meals at the Western Human Nutrition Research Center for 126 d. There was a stabilization period of 14 d at the start when all 10 subjects consumed the basal diet (BD) containing 23.4 energy percent (en%) fat and two intervention periods of 56 d each. During the first intervention period, 5 subjects consumed the BD containing 23.4 en% fat, and 5 subjects consumed a diet providing 6.3% calories from alpha-linolenic acid [flaxseed oil (FSO) diet containing 28.8 en% fat]. Diets were crossed over between the two groups during the second intervention period. Feeding the FSO diet did not significantly alter serum triglycerides, cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins, apoprotein A-I and apoprotein B when compared to the corresponding values in the subjects fed the BD, nor was there any effect of the FSO diet on the bleeding time, prothrombin time and partial prothrombin time for these subjects. Feeding the ALA-containing diet did cause a significant increase in ALA concentration in serum (P < 0.001) and PBMNC lipids (P < 0.05). It also caused a significant increase (P < 0.05) in the eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acid contents of PBMNC lipids, and a decrease (P < 0.01) in linoleic and eicosatrienoic acid contents of serum lipids.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Both preventive and curative therapies have created a considerable demand for eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids. The most common sources for omega 3 fatty acids are fish oil. The concentrations of EPA and DHA in commercial oils, after modest enrichment, reach about 300 mg/g; alternative technologies can produce reasonably priced fish oils containing 400 or even 500 mg/g of omega 3 acids. When the acids are liberated from the glycerides, concentrates of ethyl esters or free acids with 65 to 70% total omega 3 fatty acids (at least 50% EPA + DHA) are readily prepared. Difficulties have arisen because most clinical trials have used fish oils of unspecified composition, and some trials are now based on either ethyl esters or free acids. There are at least three different, but not mutually exclusive, absorption routes in humans, namely the preduodenal route, the lymphatic route via chylomicrons, and the route via the portal vein to the liver. This makes it difficult to compare results. The difficulty in obtaining dose-related clinical data may in part be due to the form in which the omega 3 acids are offered and due in part to the natural presence of these fatty acids in the body. The nontriglyceride forms, especially the free acids, have been advocated for standardization of trials to facilitate interlaboratory comparisons.

Abstract
The effects of n-3 fatty acids on plasma lipids, lipoproteins and apoproteins have usually been studied in humans after feeding of purified fish oil. This study describes the effect of a natural diet, containing salmon as the source of n-3 fatty acids, on these parameters as compared to a diet very low in n-3 fatty acids. The subjects were nine normolipidemic, healthy males who were confined to a nutrition suite for 100 days. During the first 20 days of the study the participants were given a stabilization diet consisting of 55% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 30% fat. The n-3 content of this diet was less than 1%, and it contained no 20- or 22-carbon n-3 fatty acids. After the stabilization period the men were split into two groups, one group continued on the stabilization diet while the other received the salmon diet that contained approximately 2.1 energy percent (En%) of calories from 20- and 22-carbon n-3 fatty acids. Both diets contained equal amounts of n-6 fatty acids. This regime continued for 40 days, then the two groups switched diets for the remainder of the study. Plasma triglycerides were lowered significantly (p less than 0.01) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was significantly elevated (p less than 0.01) after the men consumed the salmon diet for 40 days. The very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) were lowered, but the trend did not reach statistical significance during the intervention period.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
