Performances improvement of traditional polybenzoxazines by copolymerizing with cyclotriphosphazene-based benzoxazine monomers

Tribological properties of bismaleimide reinforced with Si-containing benzoxazine monomer

To improve the mechanical and tribological properties of bismaleimide (BMI) resin, a novel Si-containing benzoxazine (Si-BOZ) monomer was synthesized using a solvent process and N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as a silane coupling agent. The novel Si-BOZ monomer was subsequently blended with BMI to prepare Si-BOZ/BMI polymer alloys. Furthermore, the effect of Si-BOZ content on the mechanical, tribological, and thermal properties of Si-BOZ/BMI alloys was investigated. The results revealed that the addition of Si-BOZ to BMI improved the mechanical properties and wear resistance of Si-BOZ/BMI; moreover, the glass transition temperature of cured Si-BOZ/BMI alloys was lower than that of pure BMI resin. These results confirmed that the increase in wear resistance of Si-BOZ/BMI alloys can be attributed to the increase in thermal resistance and improvement in mechanical performance owing to the addition of Si-BOZ.

Isothermal Kinetics of Epoxyphosphazene Cure

The influence of epoxycyclophosphazene modifier on the process of epoxy-amine curing was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The study revealed that the curing process of epoxyphosphazene binders with 4′4′diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) provides more complete curing of the formulations in comparison with ones applying low molecular-weight polyamide curing agent (L-20). The isothermal kinetics of curing was described by means of model fitting and the isoconversional approach (Friedman method). Accurate n-order approximation was obtained for all systems under study. In particular, the 2-order equation fits well with the main part of curing excluding high degrees of conversion. The process of curing could be distinguished into three zones. The transition from zone 2 to zone 3 correlates with gelation. According to the isoconversional analysis by Friedman method, the diffusion-controlled mechanism is found at final stage of curing.

Synthesis and Application of Arylaminophosphazene as a Flame Retardant and Catalyst for the Polymerization of Benzoxazines

A novel type of phosphazene containing an additive that acts both as a catalyst and as a flame retardant for benzoxazine binders is presented in this study. The synthesis of a derivative of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCP) and meta-toluidine was carried out in the medium of the latter, which made it possible to achieve the complete substitution of chlorine atoms in the initial HCP. Thermal and flammability characteristics of modified compositions were investigated. The modifier catalyzes the process of curing and shifts the beginning of reaction from 222.0 °C for pure benzoxazine to 205.9 °C for composition with 10 phr of modifier. The additive decreases the glass transition temperature of compositions. Achievement of the highest category of flame resistance (V-0 in accordance with UL-94) is ensured both by increasing the content of phenyl residues in the composition and by the synergistic effect of phosphorus and nitrogen. A brief study of the curing kinetics disclosed the complex nature of the reaction. An accurate two-step model is obtained using the extended Prout–Tompkins equation for both steps.

Synthesis of Phosphazene-Containing, Bisphenol A-Based Benzoxazines and Properties of Corresponding Polybenzoxazines

With the aim of obtaining halogen-free polybenzoxazazines with reduced flammability, phosphazene-containing benzoxazines (PhBZ) were synthesized in a two-stage method. In the first stage of the reaction of hexachlorocycotriphosphazene with bisphenol A at molar ratios of 1:12, 1:16, and 1:24, respectively, mixtures of bisphenol and hydroxyaryloxycyclotriphosphazenes were obtained, which mainly contained P₃N₃[OC₆H₄C(CH₃)₃C₆H₄OH]₆. In the second stage, when these mixtures interacted with aniline and an excess of paraformaldehyde in toluene at 80–90 °C, PhBZ containing 20–50% of the phosphazene component with M_w 1200–5800 were formed. According to ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, PhBZ contain a small amount of oligomeric compounds with Mannich aminomethylene bridges. With an increase of the content of the phosphazene component, the curing temperature of PhBZ decreases from 242 °C to 215 °C. Cured PhBZ samples with a phosphorus content of more than 1.5% have increased flammability resistance according to UL-94.

Development of Prosopis juliflora carbon-reinforced PET bottle waste-based epoxy-blended bio-phenolic benzoxazine composites for advanced applications

An attempt has been made in the present work to develop hybrid blended composites using epoxy resin (PETEP) derived from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and bio-phenolic (cardanol)-based benzoxazine (CBz) reinforced with functionalized bio-carbon (f-PJC) obtained from Prosopis juliflora (PJ) for high performance applications. The molecular structure, thermal properties, thermo-mechanical behaviour, morphology, surface properties, and corrosion resistance of the composites were studied by different analytical methods, and the obtained results are reported. Dynamic mechanical properties such as the storage modulus (2.591 GPa), loss modulus (1.299 GPa) and cross-linking density (5.1 × 10⁷ J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹) were improved in the case of the 5 wt% f-PJC/PETEP–CBz composite compared to those of the PETEP–CBz blended matrix and the f-PJC/PETEP–CBz composites with other weight percentages. Among the studied bio-carbon-reinforced hybrid composites with different weight percentages, the 5 wt% f-PJC/PETEP–CBz composite shows a higher value of char yield (38.37%), with an enhanced glass transition temperature of 285 °C and an improved water contact angle of 111.3°. Results obtained from corrosion studies infer that these hybrid composites exhibit improved corrosion resistance behaviour and effectively protect the surface of mild steel specimens from corrosion. It is concluded that the present work can be considered as an effective method for utilizing waste products and sustainable bio-materials for the development of high performance value-added hybrid composites for thermal and corrosion protection applications.

Synthesis of a benzoxazine monomer contained hyperbranched polysiloxane and the characteristics of its polymer alloys blend with bismaleimides

A novel benzoxazine monomer contained hyperbranched polysiloxane structure (HBPSi-BOZ) was synthesized via a solvent process based on the polyformaldehyde, aniline, and a new hyperbranched polysiloxane with terminal amino groups (HBPSi-NH2). The HBPSi-BOZ was then used as modified phase to blend with bismaleimides (BMIs) resin, and a polymer alloy HBPSi-BOZ/BMI was successfully prepared. The thermal resistant properties, mechanical properties, and tribological properties of HBPSi-BOZ/BMI resins with different contents of HBPSi-BOZ prepared were researched to get an optimal ratio. The thermogravimetric analysis was also carried out to study the polymerization process and stability of HBPSi-BOZ/BMI resins. The results showed that as the thermal resistance increased, the wear resistance and mechanical properties of HBPSi-BOZ/BMI resins were also enhanced.
