Abstract
Background The knowledge of dental age estimation is essential to assess growth and development which aids in designing a treatment plan. Willems and Cameriere methods are the two most widely used approaches of dental age estimation. Aim The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability and applicability of the two methods, among 6-14 year old children of Bengal populace. The secondary objective was to compare the efficacy of Sante DICOM Viewer and CorelDRAW Graphic Suite in assessing dental age by Cameriere method. Materials and methods The study sample encompassed 411 digital panoramic radiographs. Dental age was estimated using Willems and Cameriere methods. CorelDRAW Graphic Suite and Sante DICOM Viewer software were used for dental age estimation by Cameriere method. Paired t-test was applied for the inter group comparison. Pearson correlation coefficient was also used to measure the regression among all the groups. Results Dental age was overestimated by 0.286 years using Willems method (p = 0.001). However, there was no significant difference between dental ages estimated by Cameriere method using both software (p = 0.130). Conclusion Both the methods were equally applicable for age estimation in the targeted population. Cameriere method can be performed with equivalent accuracy using both software.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate age estimation is vital in forensic medicine and clinical dentistry. The Demirjian method is commonly used for this purpose, but its applicability to Asian individuals is understudied. The present study evaluated the accuracy of dental age (DA) estimation for Taiwanese children by using the Demirjian, Willems, and modified Demirjian methods, comparing these estimates to those of chronological age (CA) based on panoramic X-ray images. METHODS A total of 232 Taiwanese children aged between 5 and 12 years underwent panoramic X-ray scans. Their permanent teeth were assessed using the Demirjian, Willems, and modified Demirjian methods to estimate DA. Regression analysis was used to determine the correlation between CA and DA, with linear regression equations established using SPSS statistics software to identify differences. RESULTS The Willems method had the lowest mean absolute error and the smallest mean difference between DA and CA among the 3 age estimation methods analyzed ( p < 0.001). The R2 value for the difference between DA and CA was 0.831 for the Willems method, 0.813 for the Demirjian method, and 0.782 for the modified Demirjian method ( p < 0.001). The Willems method had the highest correlation with CA, with the linear equation for Taiwanese children being CA = 0.822 × DA + 1.093. For comparison, for the Demirjian method, the equation was CA = 0.894 × DA + 0.165. CONCLUSION The effectiveness of predictive methods varies across ethnicities, and therefore, region-specific formulas are required. For Taiwanese children, the Willems method predicts CA most accurately. This study contributes to the fields of legal medicine and clinical dentistry by demonstrating the accuracy of DA in predicting CA.

Abstract
Despite the increased global mobility owing to the development of the international community, there remains a need for population-specific methods to estimate children's ages. Therefore, this study aimed to substantiate the necessity for a Japanese-specific age estimation method by contrasting the formerly reported age estimation accuracy and bias using Demirjian's method for Chinese, Taiwanese, South Korean, and Japanese children. We analyzed 1,558 panoramic radiographs from Japanese children (777 boys and 781 girls), assessed the maturity of seven left permanent teeth using Demirjian's criteria, and calculated the estimated age using Demirjian's method. The accuracy of the estimated ages was compared with previous reports of children from other East Asian countries which used the same age estimation method. Chinese, Taiwanese, and South Korean boys and girls were all reported to be older than their chronological ages, with the Eastern and Northern Chinese regions being the only exceptions. The same was true for Japanese children: the estimated ages of both sexes tended to be higher than their chronological age. However, there were significant variations in the values, indicating the differences in tooth growth and development between East Asian countries and sexes. Therefore, new regression equations specific to the Japanese population were formulated, and their accuracy was evaluated as the final result of this study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The dentition is one of the most accurate features for age estimation in children. However, there is some evidence that timing of dental development varies across populations. Recent research suggests that dental development may also be susceptible to influence by environmental factors, such as obesity. Given that there are also population differences in average body mass, it is possible that this may be a confounding variable that was not accounted for in prior work. We aim to compare the relative association between body mass index (BMI) and ancestry with timing of dental development. METHODS A retrospective cross-sectional chart review was undertaken using panoramic radiographs of 6- to 12-year-olds (n = 281). Age, ancestry, sex, height, and weight were obtained. Dental development was assessed using the Demirjian method, and chronological age was subtracted from estimated dental age to determine relative timing of dental development (ΔAge). BMI was calculated based upon recorded height/weight within 6 months of time of radiograph. RESULTS We found no difference in timing of dental development (accelerated/delayed) across ancestry groups (African-American, Euro-American, Hispanic, Asian; P = .15). Overweight/obese subjects had statistically significantly advanced (precocious) dental development (P < .001). Compared to normal-weight subjects, children who were overweight's age were overestimated by 5.76 months (0.48 years) and children with obesity by 5.97 months (0.49 years) on average. CONCLUSIONS BMI appears to have a greater impact on relative timing of dental development than ancestry in this population. Our results support other findings that obesity results in accelerated growth and development.

Abstract
Purpose This study was performed to develop a linear regression model using the pulp-to-tooth volume ratio (PTVR) ratio of the maxillary canine, assessed through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, to predict chronological age (CA) in Indonesian adults. Materials and Methods A sample of 99 maxillary canines was collected from patients between 20 and 49.99 years old. These samples were obtained from CBCT scans taken at the Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital in Indonesia between 2018 and 2022. Pulp volume (PV) and tooth volume (TV) were measured using ITK-SNAP, while PTVR was calculated from the PV/TV ratio. Using RStudio, a linear regression was performed to predict CA using PTVR. Additionally, correlation and observer agreement were assessed. Results The PTVR method demonstrated excellent reproducibility, and a significant correlation was found between the PTVR of the maxillary canine and CA (r=-0.74, P<0.01). The linear regression analysis showed an R2 of 0.58, a root mean square error of 5.85, and a mean absolute error of 4.31. Conclusion Linear regression using the PTVR can be effectively applied to predict CA in Indonesian adults between 20 and 49.99 years of age. As models of this type can be population-specific, recalibration for each population is encouraged. Additionally, future research should explore the use of other teeth, such as molars.

Abstract
Background The comparison of the two Willems dental age estimation methods (gender-specific (Willems I) and non-gender-specific (Willems II)) has not been fully investigated. Here we aimed to explore the applicability of the Willems dental age estimation in an Eastern Chinese population, which may cast light on the field of dental age estimation. Methods A total of 1211 oral panoramic radiographs (582 boys and 629 girls) of the Chinese Han population aged 11–16 years old were collected. Dental ages (DAs) were calculated using the Willems method. Statistical significance was set at a p-value < 0.05. Age differences between chronological age (CA) and dental age were analyzed by paired t-tests and mean absolute error (MAE). Results The differences between CA and DA determined by the Willems I method were + 0.44 and + 0.09 years for boys and girls, respectively. When using the Willems II method, these differences were + 0.57 and − 0.09. The MAEs of the Willems I method between DA and CA were 0.95 and 1.00 years in boys and girls, respectively. For Willems II, MAEs were 1.02 and 1.00 years in boys and girls. Conclusions This study showed that the Willems I method was more accurate than the Willems II method in the boys’ group for predicting age from a whole scale. In comparison, Willems II is more competitive in the girls' group. Neither method may be satisfactory for 11-to-16-year-old teenagers in Eastern China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES One or more missing teeth, such as hypodontia, make it difficult to obtain accurate results in age estimation methods. This paper aims to test the accuracy of the models developed by Bedek et al. that can estimate age with fewer than seven teeth for Turkish children. MATERIALS AND METHODS Panoramic radiographs of 1118 children (540 girls and 578 boys) aged between 6 and 16 years were evaluated using the Willems method and Bedek models for the entire sample and for different ages and sexes. Differences between dental age (DA) and chronological age (CA) calculated for all methods for each sex and all age groups were analyzed the paired sample t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. The accuracy of the DA estimation methods was determined by the proximity of DA to CA by calculating mean absolute error (MAE). RESULTS While all Bedek models underestimated CA by 0.2 to 0.1 years, the Willems method overestimated CA by 0.3 years. DA-CA difference in the total sample and girls was statistically significant in all methods. In the total sample, the seven- and four-teeth models had the lowest MAE, while the one-tooth model had the highest MAE. CONCLUSIONS Seven- and four-teeth models were the most suitable for age estimation, and all models except the one-tooth model were found to be more accurate than the Willems method in northwestern Turkish children. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Especially in children with hypodontia, it may be possible to estimate DA with the use of Bedek models.

Abstract
Tibetan ethnic group is one of the oldest ethnic groups in China and South Asia. This study set out to analyze the dental development and validate Demirjian method and Willems method in estimating dental age of Tibetan children and adolescents, and to modify Demirjian method based on Tibetan population to provide ethnic-specific reference data and a more reliable method for forensic age assessment in Tibetan ethnic group. In this study, 1951 samples aged between 4 and 15 years were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Multiple linear regression was used to establish relationship between chronological age (CA) and developmental stages of left mandibular permanent teeth. The accuracy of the modified method was tested and compared with that of Demirjian and Willems method. Results showed that dental maturity score (DMS) was significantly greater in girls than in boys in all age groups except for the 4-year age group (p < 0.05). Mean absolute error (MAE) was 0.96 years for both boys and girls by Demirjian method, and 1.06 and 1.16 years for boys and girls respectively by Willems method. Adjusted scores table was established and tested. The age of boys was overestimated by 0.13 years and the age of girls was underestimated by 0.06 years by the adjusted scores table. MAE was lower than that of the other two methods. In conclusion, Demirjian method and Willems method was not sufficiently accurate in estimating dental age of Tibetan population. The modified method was more suitable for dental age estimation of Tibetan population than Demirjian and Willems method.

Abstract
Age estimation is a mandatory procedure when the chronological age is unknown or uncertain. Dental development is the preferred characteristic for estimating a child's age. There are many methods for dental age estimation, but their reliability can differ between populations. This study compared the accuracy of three of these methods-the London Atlas (LA), Haavikko's method (HM), and Cameriere's European formula (CF)-in Turkish children living in northwestern Turkey. Panoramic radiographs of 980 children from northwestern Turkey aged between 6.00 and 14.99 years were examined for the whole study group and separately for different ages and sexes by all three methods. Statistical differences between chronological age and dental age were tested using the paired sample t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The LA, HM, and CF accuracies were determined based on the mean absolute error. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient showed that the correlation between chronological age and dental age for both sexes was linear for all methods. The LA overestimated the chronological age by 0.09 years, while HM and CF underestimated it by 0.49 and 0.11 years, respectively. The difference between dental age and chronological age was significant in all samples, for all methods, except for the LA in boys. When boys, girls, and the total sample were evaluated, values with the lowest mean absolute error were obtained by HM and were statistically significant in all three groups. Therefore, HM is more accurate than the LA and CF for dental age estimation in Turkish children living in northwestern Turkey.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental calcification information is relevant for clinical, archaeological, and forensic applications. However, dental maturity measurements in current cohorts of Chinese children are insufficient. AIM This study aimed to establish the mandibular dental maturity table and determine the accuracy of dental age estimation using the Demirjian method in a Chinese sample. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Permanent mandibular teeth, excluding the third molar, in 2091 panoramic radiographs of 1008 males and 1083 females aged 3-15 were graded, and dental age was estimated according to Demirjian's criteria. Age-of-attainment was calculated with probit regression for each stage by sex, and sex differences were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Dental age was compared with chronological age using paired t-tests. RESULTS Although females showed earlier age-of-attainment than males, significant sex differences were only found in stages D-G (p < 0.05). The Demirjian method overestimated the dental age in both males (0.68 ± 1.05 years) and females (0.59 ± 0.97 years). CONCLUSIONS The relationship between mineralisation stage and chronological age in this study can be applied as a reference for mandibular dental maturity of Chinese children and adolescents. The Demirjian method overestimated the chronological ages of this sample.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aims of this study were to create a method for estimation of dental age in Saudi children and adolescents based on the Willems model developed using the Belgian Caucasian (BC) reference data and to compare the ability of the two models to predict age in Saudi children. METHODS Development of the seven lower left permanent mandibular teeth was staged in 1146 panoramic radiographs from healthy Saudi children (605 male, 541 female) without missing permanent teeth and without all permanent teeth fully developed (except third molars). The data were used to validate the Willems BC model and to construct a Saudi Arabian-specific (Willems SA) model. The mean error, mean absolute error, and root mean square error obtained from both validations were compared to quantify the variance in errors in the sample. RESULTS The overall mean error for the Willems SA method was 0.023 years (standard deviation, ± 0.55), indicating no systematic underestimation or overestimation of age. For girls, the error using the Willems SA method was significantly lower but still negligible at 0.06 years. A small but statistically significant difference in total mean absolute error (11 days) was found between the Willems BC and Willems SA models when the data were compared independent of sex. The overall mean absolute error for girls was slightly lower for the Willems BC method than for the Willems SA method (1.33 years vs. 1.37 years). CONCLUSIONS The difference in ability to predict dental age between the Willems BC and Willems SA methods is very small, indicating that the data from the BC population can be used as a reference in the Saudi population.

Abstract
Objectives Age estimation is widely applied in the field of orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and forensic science. Dental age estimation by the radiological method is frequently used because of its convenience and noninvasiveness. However, there are not enough suitable methods for eastern Chinese children. This study aimed to establish a modified formula for eastern Chinese children according to the Demirjian method and then compared the accuracy of the modified method with the Demirjian method and Willems method. Materials and methods A total of 2367 dental panoramic radiographs from individuals aged 5–16 years of eastern China were collected as samples. Age estimation was conducted using the Demirjian and Willems methods. The polynomial curve fitting method was used to modify the Demirjian method to improve its application to the eastern Chinese children. The paired t test and accuracy ratio were used to compare the applicability of the modified methods with two commonly used methods. Results The mean chronological age (CA) of the subjects was 11.20 ± 3.29 years for boys and 10.99 ± 3.12 years for girls. The mean difference values between the CA and dental age (DA) (CA–DA) using the Demirjian and Willems methods were 0.73 and 0.7 for boys, respectively, and both 0.79 for girls. The modified method using the polynomial curve fitting presented a smaller underestimation compared with CA for both boys (0.04 years) and girls (0.09 years), which showed a high suitability to Chinese children to some extent. Conclusions The Willems method was more accurate in estimating DA compared with the Demirjian method. However, the modified method was more accurate than the two methods; therefore, it can be used in eastern Chinese children. Clinical relevance It was thought to be a non-invasive, convenient, and efficient method to connect DA and CA. By estimating dental age, pediatrist, and orthodontists can better understand the development of permanent teeth and provide a more accurate orthodontic treatment time and treatment plan to children patients.

Abstract
CONTEXT Dental age, one of the indicators of biological age, is inferred by radiological methods. Two of the most commonly used methods are using Demirjian's radiographic stages of permanent teeth excluding the third molar (Demirjian's and Willems' method). The major drawbacks of these methods are that they are based on population-specific conversion tables and may tend to over- or underestimate dental age in other populations. Machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to create complex data schemas more simply while keeping the same annotation system. The objectives of this study are to compare (1) the capacity of ten machine learning algorithms to predict dental age in children using the seven left permanent mandibular teeth compared to reference methods and (2) the capacity of ten machine learning algorithms to predict dental age from childhood to young adulthood using the seven left permanent mandibular teeth and the four third molars. METHODS Using a large radiological database of 3605 orthopantomograms (1734 females and 1871 males) of healthy French patients aged between 2 and 24 years, seven left permanent mandibular teeth and the 4 third molars were assessed using Demirjian's stages. Dental age estimation was then performed using Demirjian's reference method and various ML regression methods. Two analyses were performed: with the 7 left mandibular teeth without third molars for the under 16 age group and with the third molars for the entire study population. The different methods were compared using mean error, mean absolute error, root mean square error as metrics, and the Bland-Altman graph. RESULTS All ML methods had a mean absolute error (MAE) under 0.811 years. With Demirjian's and Willems' methods, the MAE was 1.107 and 0.927 years, respectively. Except for the Bayesian ridge regression that gives poorer accuracy, there was no statistical difference between all ML tested. CONCLUSION Compared to the two reference methods, all the ML methods based on the maturation stages defined by Demirjian were more accurate in estimating dental age. These results support the use of ML algorithms instead of using standard population tables.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of Cameriere’s European formula for age estimation in children in South China and to adapt the formula to establish a more suitable formula for these children. Moreover, the performance of dental age estimation based on Cameriere’s method combining the developmental information of permanent teeth (PT) and third molar (TM) was also analysed. Orthopantomographs of 720 healthy children in Group A, and orthopantomographs of 320 children and 280 subadults in Group B were assessed. The samples of Group A were divided into training dataset 1 and test dataset 1, and the samples of Group B were also divided into training dataset 2 and test dataset 2. A South China-specific formula was established based on the training dataset 1, and the comparison of accuracy between the Cameriere’s European formula and the South China-specific formula was conducted with the test dataset 1. Additionally, a PT regression model, a TM regression model, and a combined regression model (PT + TM) were established based on the training dataset 2, and the performance of these three models were validated on the test dataset 2. The Cameriere’s European formula underestimated chronological age with a mean difference (ME) of −0.47 ± 1.11 years in males and −0.69 ± 1.19 years in females. However, the South China-specific formula underestimated chronological age, with a mean difference (ME) of −0.02 ± 0.71 years in males and −0.14 ± 0.73 years in females. Compared with PT model and TM model, the PT and TM combined model obtained the smallest root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.29 years in males and 0.93 years in females. In conclusion, the South China-specific formula was more suitable for assessing the dental age of children in South China, and the PT and TM combined model can improve the accuracy of dental age estimation in children.Key points Orthopantomographs of 720 healthy children in Group A, and orthopantomographs of 320 children and 280 subadults in Group B were assessed. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study evaluated the validity of the nonlinear equations (Qingdao model) for dental age assessment in an eastern Chinese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS We studied 1073 digital panoramic radiographs of children aged 11-16 years from a Chinese Han population. Dental ages (DAs) were calculated using the Demirjian and the new model methods. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. For each method, differences between the chronological age (CA) and dental age were analyzed by paired t-tests and mean absolute error (MAE). RESULTS The discrepancies between CA and DA determined by Qingdao model were 0.18 and 0.30 years for males and females, respectively. While using Demirjian method, these differences were and 0.46 and 0.30. The Qingdao model's MAEs between DA and CA were 1.23 and 0.90 years in males and females, respectively. As for the Demirjian method, MAEs were 1.43 and 0.86 years in males and females. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that the new nonlinear equations were more accurate than the traditional Demirjian method. Especially, the new nonlinear Qingdao model is more competitive in 11-14-year male groups and 15-16-year female groups. We recommend a combined Qingdao model and Demirjian method may reasonably reflect the CAs among children in the eastern Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of the Demirjian, Willems, and Nolla methods for dental age estimation on a sample of the northern Chinese population. DESIGN The study consisted of 2000 panoramic radiographs (1000 boys and 1000 girls) with an age range between 5 and 14 years. The mean error and absolute mean error were calculated according to each method, and the accuracy was statistically analysed. RESULTS The three methods used for Chinese subjects overestimated the dental age by 1.16, 0.50, and 0.07 years. The absolute mean error was largest in most age groups for the Demirjian method, which was considered inaccurate in age estimation for teenagers, and it was more than 1.00 years for only several age groups for the Willems method and only girls aged 14 years for the Nolla method. The mean error and absolute mean error were lowest for the Nolla method and highest for the Demirjian method. CONCLUSIONS Although the Demirjian method is frequently used in Chinese subjects for legal and medical purposes, the Willems and Nolla methods were more reliable than the Demirjian method. Among the three methods, the accuracy in the northern Chinese subjects was highest for the Nolla method. Therefore, it is recommended to evaluate the accuracy of different methods before assessing the age in specific populations.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of Demirjian and Willems dental age estimation methods on a population of 8- to 15-year-old Taiwanese children. A total of 799 digital panoramic radiographs (404 boys, 395 girls) of children aged from 8.00 to 15.99 years are evaluated. All panoramic films are assessed by 2 examiners using Demirjian and Willems methods. We randomly select 48 panoramic films to evaluate the reproducibility of dental age measurements. The intraobserver and interobserver Cohen's kappa values are 0.733 and 0.762, respectively.The difference between chronological age and dental age is calculated for each individual using both methods. The result shows that Demirjian method slightly overestimates the chronological age of children. The mean age difference is 0.12 years for boys (standard deviation [SD], 0.80) and 0.21 years for girls (SD, 0.95). Willems method slightly underestimates the chronological age of children. The mean age difference is -0.22 years for boys (SD, 0.80) and -0.12 years for girls (SD, 0.92).In conclusion, Demirjian and Willems methods are both accurate for assessing dental age in the Taiwan region of China. The mean age differences of both methods are within ±1 year, which is acceptable at forensic odontology level. However, although the discrepancy between chronological age and dental age is frequently observed between -0.5 and 0.5 years in both methods, there is no guarantee it will be accurate for any particular individual, further modifications to both methods are suggested.

Abstract
Due to the secondary dentin formation, the dental pulp undergoes changes in shape throughout life. Based on this phenomenon, the Kvaal method has been applied to various populations for age estimation, and its usefulness has been verified. When applying the Kvaal method to Chinese subjects, we observed a relatively strong correlation between mandibular canines and age. This study notes the correlation between canines and chronological age and is the first to identify which canine is most closely related to chronological age. In addition, a new, simpler formula is determined based on canines according to Kvaal's methodology. The radiographs of 360 individuals from northern China were selected, from which the widths and lengths of the pulp from four canines were measured according to the Kvaal method. Next, inter- and intra-observer reliabilities were analyzed in order to assess the repeatability of these measurements. The correlation between measurements and age was examined, and Chinese-specific age estimation formulae were derived. The results revealed that the ratios from the left maxillary canine exhibited the strongest correlation with age compared to the other canines, whereas the left mandibular canine showed the weakest correlation, which may contribute to the overall poor correlation of mandibular canines with age. What's more, the formula derived from the left maxillary canine in this study displayed the highest coefficients of determination, and the formula derived from all canines showed the lowest residuals. Both of these formulae performed better than the Chinese-specific formula derived from six different types of teeth in our previous study, which had formerly possessed the highest coefficients of determination and the lowest residuals. Thus, we concluded that canines do play an important role in age estimation in the Chinese population, and the correlation between maxillary canines and chronological age is stronger than that of mandibular canines, although no distinct trend as to which side is better correlated with age was established. Going forward, we recommend the analysis of additional samples from different geographical regions and populations to further verify the importance of canines in age estimation.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to test whether a new stage classification based on radiographic visibility of the periodontal ligament in lower third molars in a Chinese population can be used for the 18- and 21-year thresholds. A total of 1300 orthopantomograms, including equal numbers of northern Chinese males and females evenly distributed between the ages of 15 and 40 years, were analyzed. The stages were defined according to the visibility of periodontal ligament for the outer parts of lower third molar roots because the visibility status of the periodontal ligament between the roots of lower third molars is none valuable in many Chinese individuals. Stage 0 was first achieved at the age of 17.05 years in males and 17.46 years in females. The earliest appearance of stage 1 was 17.47 years in males and 17.86 years in females. Stage 2 was first observed in males at the age of 21.43 years and in females at the age of 21.96 years. The onset of stage 3 was first observed at the age of 25.83 years in males and 23.14 years in females. Compared with the stage classification of Olze et al., which also considers the mesial parts of the roots, the number of assessable cases could be significantly increased. Therefore, our novel approach is effective for age estimation in the Chinese population.
