Abstract
Objective: To synthesize and analyze the prevalence, composition, longitudinal stability, and predictors of cancer symptom clusters in children and adolescents undergoing chemotherapy. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Evidence was sourced from MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science, as well as clinical trial registries (Clinical Trials WHO-ICTRP) and gray literature. The search was performed in February 2025, with no restrictions on publication date or language. Two independent reviewers screened and selected the studies. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using design-specific tools, and the findings were synthesized narratively. Results: A total of 6221 records were identified, with 12 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. These studies were published between 2010 and 2024 in the United States, Brazil, China, and Turkey. Cancer symptom clusters in children and adolescents followed well-defined patterns, with the gastrointestinal, emotional, fatigue-related, somatic, and self-image clusters being the most prevalent. Conclusions: Early identification of these cancer symptom clusters is essential for guiding interprofessional teams in delivering personalized, evidence-based care to children and adolescents with cancer and their families.

Abstract
We present a novel comprehensive literature review of studies of the psychosocial functioning (PF) and quality of life (QoL) of patients with childhood glaucoma and their caregivers. Our findings demonstrate variable study quality and approach, as well as inconsistent results relating to the association of glaucoma-specific factors and sociodemographic variables with measured PF and QoL. Future studies should focus on the development of culturally cognizant and standardized assessment tools, execution of multi-center longitudinal studies with global representation, evaluation of PF and QoL among siblings and childhood glaucoma providers, and implementation of interventions to improve patient and caregiver PF and QoL.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nausea is a symptom that is often experienced but misunderstood. Its impact is amplified in pediatric oncology patients. Nausea assessments in pediatric oncology are few and not yet widely used. The Baxter Retching Faces (BARF) scale holds promise and is used in some pediatric oncology units. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to evaluate the impact of the BARF scale on nursing assessments in inpatient pediatric hematology/oncology and stem cell transplant settings. CONCLUSIONS Project work took place on one hematology/oncology unit and one stem cell transplant unit. Thirty nurses completed the acceptability of intervention measure (AIM), intervention appropriateness measure (IAM), and feasibility of intervention measure (FIM) to provide initial feedback on the BARF scale. Nurses used the BARF scale over an 8-week period. Patient demographics and BARF scores were collected during nausea assessments. Twenty nurses completed AIM/IAM/FIM scores postintervention. There were no significant changes in scores, though nurses stated that the tool was easy to use and provided valuable symptom feedback. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Symptom management will continue to be a challenge in the pediatric setting given developmental and disease-specific considerations inherent to the specialty. While this small-scale project did not achieve statistical significance, the evidence and feedback from nursing staff present a compelling case that efforts to investigate and integrate improved methods of assessing nausea and other problematic symptoms are needed to enhance nursing practice and impact patient-centered outcomes.

Abstract
Background Symptom Screening in Pediatrics Tool (SSPedi) was developed for symptom screening by children 8-18 years. Objectives were to evaluate the reliability and validity of proxy-SSPedi and self-report mini-SSPedi for younger children. Methods This multi-center study enrolled guardians of children 2-7 years receiving cancer treatments (proxy-SSPedi) and their children 4-7 years (mini-SSPedi). The two populations were: (1) More symptomatic group where children were receiving active cancer treatment and were in hospital or clinic for four consecutive days; and (2) Less symptomatic group where children were receiving maintenance therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia or had completed cancer therapy. Proxy-SSPedi or mini-SSPedi were completed with measures of mucositis, nausea, pain, quality of life and overall symptoms. Respondents in the more symptomatic group repeated proxy-SSPedi/mini-SSPedi and a global symptom change scale 3 days later. Results There were 402 guardians and 326 children included in the analysis. Test re-test reliability of proxy-SSPedi showed intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.83 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.72-0.90). Mean difference in proxy-SSPedi between more and less symptomatic groups was 9.7 (95% CI 8.3-11.1). Proxy-SSPedi was responsive to change and hypothesized relationships between measures were observed. With a priori threshold ≥0.6, inter-rater ICC among all dyads and those 6-7 years were 0.54 (95% CI 0.45-0.62) and 0.62 (95% CI 0.50-0.71) respectively. Among participating children, other hypothesized reliability and validity thresholds were generally met. Conclusions Proxy-SSPedi is reliable, valid and responsive in children 2-7 years old receiving cancer treatments. Mini-SSPedi can be used for children 6-7 years of age. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW We aimed to review the recent research on the childhood cancer symptom experience pertaining to socioeconomic factors, biology and genetics, growth and development, family psychosocial dynamics, and social and treating environments to begin to formulate recommendations for a personalized approach to symptom management. RECENT FINDINGS Cancer symptoms are common and distressing in children and negatively impact child and family quality of life. Many interacting factors influence children's cancer symptoms experiences, including the assessment and management of such symptoms. This paper highlights several gaps in the research related to the cancer symptom experience including routine symptom assessment, the impact of socioeconomic, biological, and genetic factors on symptoms, and the establishment of effective symptom management partnerships with families. Based on our findings, we provide recommendations related to that research which is ready to be implemented into clinical practice and areas for needed future efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer diseases in children and adolescents are considered to be one of the most serious health problems in the world. It is estimated that about 151,435 cases are diagnosed in children annually. Children with cancer experience many comorbid symptoms related to diagnosis and treatment that can profoundly affect their lives. They experience physical and emotional suffering, which affects their well-being and physical fitness, influencing the prognosis and deteriorating their physical, mental and social functioning. Given the limited data, an attempt was made to assess the problems of the biopsychosocial sphere of need and stressors among children and adolescents treated for cancer. Accurate symptom assessment is essential to ensure high-quality care and effective treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS The qualitative study was conducted in pediatric oncology of hospitals in Poland. Children diagnosed with cancer were invited to participate in the study to assess their problems, stressors and needs. RESULTS The study included 520 people, where female sex constituted 48% and male 52%. The mean age of the children is 13.2 SD = 2.5. Negative experiences related to the disease are experienced by 82% of children. Among the surveyed children, the most experienced were anxiety (61%). The conducted research shows that as many as 69% of all respondents experienced states that indicate severe depression. The most common somatic problems reported by children were pain (58%). The most dominant areas of life that had a negative impact was body image (85%). CONCLUSIONS Children and adolescents diagnosed with neoplastic disease experience many problems and stressors in every sphere of life, which undoubtedly affects a high level of unmet needs. The main category of needs concerning the challenges faced by children with cancer was psychological and care problems. In the youth group, the needs were mainly related to education and social support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain tumor survivors are at risk for significant late effects following treatment completion that may adversely impact health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The current study examines the relationship between executive functioning (EF) and HRQOL in pediatric brain tumor survivors within a longitudinal framework. We hypothesized that early deficits in EF would be related to less optimal HRQOL in this population. PROCEDURE The current study utilized retrospective medical chart review to identify neurocognitive correlates of HRQOL in 137 youth previously treated for a pediatric brain tumor. Participants completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) and neuropsychological assessment, including a well-validated measure of executive functioning (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function; BRIEF). General linear regression and multivariate models were utilized to examine the relationship between child executive functioning and HRQOL. RESULTS Multiple domains of child executive functioning, as reported by parents on the BRIEF, significantly predicted parent-proxy reported HRQOL after controlling for demographic and medical covariates, including child intellectual functioning (IF). Similarly, after controlling for covariates, the BRIEF Cognitive Regulation Index was a significant predictor of self-reported physical and school functioning domains of HRQOL. CONCLUSION Current data demonstrate EF is a significant predictor of HRQOL during survivorship for youth previously diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor. Results suggest that opportunities may exist to intervene and improve HRQOL of pediatric brain tumor survivors by targeting EF.

Abstract
PURPOSE This report represents a subanalysis of data from a primary study and addresses a gap in understanding the similarities and differences of symptom reporting between children with advanced cancer and their parents. The objectives of this subanalysis were to (1) compare reports of symptom prevalence, symptom burden, and symptom frequency, severity, and distress between groups of children and adolescents and their parents, and (2) describe concordance of symptom reports within individual child-parent dyads. DESIGN AND METHODS Forty-six children with relapsed, refractory, or progressive cancer and their parents from five pediatric cancer centers prospectively reported symptoms every 2 weeks for up to 61 weeks. The abbreviated Pediatric Quality of Life and Evaluation of Symptoms Technology-Memorial Symptom Assessment Scales were used to measure symptom prevalence, frequency, severity, and distress. RESULTS Children and parents reported pain, fatigue, nausea, and sleeping difficulties as the most frequently occurring symptoms. With the exception of shortness of breath, parents reported symptom prevalence more often than children. The differences in parent reports were statistically significant for fatigue, nausea, lack of appetite, feeling nervous, and sadness. Parents reported higher symptom burden scores compared to children for all individual symptoms except shortness of breath. Children reported higher scores for 19 of 32 possible symptom frequency, severity, and distress ratings. Children's scores were higher for frequency and severity, while parents' scores were higher for distress. Sleeping difficulties, pain, nausea, and diarrhea demonstrated the highest concordance, while feeling nervous, sadness, irritability, and fatigue yielded the lowest concordance between children's and parents' symptom reports. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Eliciting the symptom experience from the child, when appropriate, rather than a parent proxy is best practice given evidence supporting the overestimation of symptom prevalence by parents and underestimation of symptom frequency and severity for some symptoms. When proxy raters must be used, pediatric nurses should educate proxy raters regarding symptom assessment, and assess and tend to symptoms that may not exhibit visual cues. Pediatric nurses should conduct a comprehensive symptom assessment and evaluate beyond the presence of symptoms and include an assessment of frequency, severity, and distress for physical and psychological symptoms to optimize symptom management strategies.

Abstract
CONTEXT Children with cancer endure multiple symptoms during treatment. However, there remains a lack of systematic approaches to capture the whole picture of the symptom experience of children with cancer younger than eight years of age. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to conduct an integrative review to explore symptom experience of children with cancer younger than eight years of age. METHODS A literature search of PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Cochrane databases, and four Chinese databases was performed to identify empirical studies, followed by an evaluation of empirical quality and data extraction and synthesis. RESULTS Twelve articles covering 11 symptoms met the inclusion criteria. Children with cancer under the age of eight years experienced multiple intense symptoms, especially pain, worry, and anxiety. PedsQL™ Cancer Module (for age five to seven years) was the most commonly used instruments. There were limited data on these children's symptom quality, timing, and distress. Discordance between a child's age and symptom intensity was noted. Inconsistent concordance existed between children and their proxy symptom reports. CONCLUSION Children with cancer younger than eight years of age experience multiple symptoms. There is a need to investigate the full symptom profiles of these young children in consideration of their developmental nuances; to examine the concordance among different symptom reporters; and to conduct more qualitative studies to explore their symptom experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Symptom Screening in Pediatrics Tool (SSPedi) is valid for assessing symptoms in children aged 8-18 years receiving cancer treatments. The objective was to develop a new self-report symptom screening tool for children receiving cancer treatments who are 4-7 years of age (mini-SSPedi), based on SSPedi. METHODS Respondents were children with cancer or pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients who were 4-7 years of age. We included the same 15 symptoms contained in SSPedi. Using cognitive interviewing, we developed mini-SSPedi in three phases and made decisions based upon respondent understanding. First, we developed questionnaire structure regarding recall period, concept of bother and response option format. Second, we determined wording of each symptom. Third, we evaluated the entire mini-SSPedi instrument for understanding and ease of completion. RESULTS We enrolled 100 participants in total and included 30, 40 and 30 in each of the three phases. Questionnaire structure was satisfactory with a recall period of "today" and a faces-based 3-point Likert scale. Bother was well-understood. Five symptoms required modification to achieve satisfactory understanding while the remaining 10 SSPedi symptoms did not require modification. Among the last 10 children enrolled, all understood each mini-SSPedi item and none thought mini-SSPedi was hard to complete. CONCLUSION We developed a symptom screening tool for children with cancer and pediatric HSCT recipients between 4 and 7 years of age that is understandable and easy to complete. Future work will evaluate the psychometric properties of mini-SSPedi and develop an electronic version of the instrument.

Abstract
PURPOSE Children with brain tumors (BTs) experience fatigue and decreased quality of life (QOL). Physical activity (PA) is recommended during and after cancer treatment. We explored whether a fitness tracker intervention combined with tailored coaching by a physical therapist (PT) increased PA and QOL and decreased fatigue in children with BTs. METHODS Participants were 7 to 18 years' old, within 2 years of diagnosis, and received a 12-week PA intervention using a fitness tracker combined with 5 PT coaching sessions. Steps/day measured by Fitbit and self-reports of QOL, fatigue, and PA were evaluated at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. RESULTS Participants had nonsignificant increase in steps/day. Total fatigue, general, and sleep/rest subscales improved while cognitive fatigue and QOL remained unchanged. Higher steps/day were associated with lower fatigue. CONCLUSION This is a feasible intervention that may contribute to an increase in PA and improve fatigue in children with BTs.
