Children's Resilience to Ongoing Border Attacks: The Role of Father, Mother, and Child Resources

Turkish validity and reliability study of the parental cognitive perception inventory on the effects of disasters on children's well-being (PCP-DCWB)

BACKGROUND

Natural disasters have a devastating impact on children. Parents' perception and awareness of the symptoms of mental disorders in children following a disaster event is an important element for early diagnosis and treatment. The study focused on developing the Turkish version of the Parents' Cognitive Perception Inventory on the Effects of Disasters on Children's Well-Being (PCP-DCWB-TR), ensuring cultural and linguistic adaptation and maintaining its reliability and validity.

METHOD

A methodological approach was adopted, and 213 parents were included in the study. Data collection was conducted online between March and June 2023 using the Socio-Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire and the PCP-DCWB-TR. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, and reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, test-retest, and item-total score analysis.

RESULTS

Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted and revealed 16 items in two subscales, explaining 55.43 % of the total variance. The scale showed high reliability with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.89, while confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the model with a mean error of approximation of 0.080. Test-retest results showed a strong correlation (Pearson correlation 0.78, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The adapted PCP-DCWB-TR is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing parents' cognitive perceptions of the impact of disasters on children's well-being in the context of Turkish society.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

All healthcare professionals can use this scale in interventional studies aiming at assessing parents' cognitive perceptions of the impact of disasters on children's well-being.

Maternal Psychological Aggression, Problem Behaviors, and the Mediating Roles of Psychological Resilience and Self-Control in Preschoolers

Objective

This study examines the relationship between maternal psychological aggression (PA) and preschoolers' problem behaviors (PB), focusing on the mediating roles of psychological resilience (PR) and self-control (SC), and gender differences.

Methods

Mothers of 1141 preschoolers (52.9% boys, 47.1% girls; Mage = 4.26, SD = 0.85) participated in three waves of a longitudinal survey, each two months apart. Mothers participating in this study reported basic demographic information and PA at T1. PR and SC were reported at T2. PB of preschoolers was reported at T3. Path analysis models were employed to ascertain the relationship between PA and PB, as well as the mediating roles of PR and SC. Multiple group analyses were employed to ascertain the moderating role of gender.

Results

Maternal PA (T1) was positively associated with preschoolers' PB (T3) (β=0.220, p<0.001). PR (T2) and SC (T2) independently and sequentially mediated the relationship between maternal PA (T1) and preschoolers' PB (T3). Maternal PA (T1) was negatively associated with preschoolers' PR (T2) only in boys (β =-0.155, p<0.001), not in girls (β =-0.030, p>0.05).

Conclusion

This study reveals the impact and underlying mechanisms of maternal PA on preschoolers' PB and highlights gender differences. These findings underscore the importance of protective factors in fostering positive adaptive behaviors in children subjected to maternal PA. Interventions should focus on preventing maternal PA and enhancing children's PR and SC, particularly in boys, to promote healthy and positive behaviors.

Seeking central hopelessness symptoms which direct link to resilience among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder in China-A network perspective

The intervention process for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is inextricably associated with their parents' mental health problems, such as hopelessness, which may adversely affect resilience and indirectly impact the effectiveness of interventions for their children. Hence, the motivation to help parents of children with ASD reduce hopelessness prompted us to conduct the present study and explore the interrelationship between hopelessness symptoms and resilience. This study evaluated hopelessness and resilience using the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Participants met the criteria for their children's ASD diagnosis by a psychiatrist (N = 448; 54.69% mothers; Meanage  = 34.59 years, SDage  = 4.94 years). Moreover, we used symptom network analysis to examine the variability in network structure between fathers and mothers. The flow function was applied to examine which hopelessness symptoms were directly or indirectly associated with resilience. The results showed that #BHS11 (i.e., unpleasantness-ahead) was the central symptom found in the network structure for all parents and fathers, while #BHS17 (i.e., no-future-satisfaction) was the central symptom in the network structure for mothers. Additionally, #BHS6 ([NOT] expect-to-succeed) was directly and positively associated with resilience in all three network structures (i.e., all parents, fathers, and mothers). The results of the present study provide evidence that influential symptoms should be addressed and offer guidance for further interventions to reduce hopelessness and enhance resilience among parents of children with ASD.

Development and validation of the parents' cognitive perception inventory of disaster effects on children's well-being (PCP-DCWB)

BACKGROUND

Parents' cognition about the type and nature of consequences a disaster may pose on the children's psychosocial health, could be a major protective factor against the long-term overwhelming complications. Given the lack of a reliable instrument to measure parents' cognition about disasters' effects on children's well-being, this study was conducted to develop and validate the parents' cognitive perception inventory of disaster effects on children's well-being (PCP-DCWB).

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study 300 parents of the survived primary school aged children from the Iran's northwest earthquake on August 2012 were recruited in the city of Varzegan. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was applied to identify the subcomponents and Cronbach's alpha and Guttmann Split-half coefficients were calculated to assess the internal consistency reliability of the scale.

RESULTS

Structural indicators of the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure (0.69) and Bartlett's test of Sphericity (P < 0.001, df = 153, X² = 618.35) verified interpretability of the EFA output. Applying principal component analysis and direct oblimin rotation in the EFA four latent factors were identified (i.e., perception about child overall mental health, coping with trauma's long-term effects, children or parents' continuing memory of past disaster and perception about behavioral and educational problems) which explained 49.32% of the total variance. The estimated Cronbach's alpha and split-half reliability coefficients (0.71 and 0.52 respectively) supported good internal consistency of the instrument.

CONCLUSION

The study findings revealed sound psychometric attributes of the PCP-DCWB to be applied in assessment of parents' cognition about psychological impacts of a traumatic event on the survived children. The instrument application can shed light on level of pre-disaster preparations in local, national and international scales and help effectiveness assessment of interventions that target maintenance of psycho-social well-being among disaster-affected survivors over time.
